Rebranding Pattaya Again T

he Thai tourism ministry has pinpointed five sites as quality tourism destinations in the latest exercise in holiday orientation. Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul explained that the aim was to boost the number of highspending or “value” tourists and to change the negative stereotypes which continue to haunt some Thai cities and beach resorts. The ministry believes that Pattaya still suffers from its reputation as a questionable nightlife destination and wants to rebrand the Eastern Seaboard city as a world-class sports and family center. Although City Hall has made giant steps in recent years to attract international sporting events, including yachting and golf, the government feels there is much more that can be done, especially in light of the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community which will establish a free trade area and encourage cross-border tourism among 10 countries in the area. On the family front, Pattaya now offers an impressive list of locations and facilities for parents and children, including the recentlylaunched Cartoon Network Amazone waterpark in Bang Saray. All five-star condominiums and hotels in the Pattaya area

News Fake credit card scammers caught Two Pakistanis and a South Korean national were arrested with a selection of fake electronic cards, tools for making fake currency and various expensive items such as women’s shoes. The arrests followed a tip-off from a Thai bank about the nefarious activities of the trio in shopping malls throughout the province of Chonburi. Kang Youngwon, 45, Ahmed Rice, 45, and Muhammed Anwar, 39, were caught red-handed at a Pattaya store, confessed their misdeeds and said they had mostly bought expensive phones and apps which they later sold for a handsome profit. A car used by the gang was confiscated by police.

Pickup truck Woman arrested with crashed into bus hallucinatory drugs

A white Chevrolet Colorado, licensed in Chonburi, crashed into the back of a baht bus entering Sattahip. Ten Russian passengers were injured, but the driver of the pickup, identified as Nattapol, fled the scene without bothering to care for the injured, which included two friends of his. It is believed that several of the passengers have insufficient funds to pay for their medical treatment and have appealed for assistance from public funds.

Stressed Swiss takes own life Suicide was provisionally ruled in the death of Pierre Georges Glauser, 69, who was found with his throat cut in his house in Tambon Pong. Police also discovered a half-consumed bottle of spirits and what appeared to be a suicide note. His wife, Watsana Glauser, 35, said the couple had been together for six years and had a young daughter. Recently, Glauser had been having breathing problems which were diagnosed as serious pulmonary edema and inflammation. She believed that the negative reports from the hospital concerning his condition were the reason why he had decided to take his own life.

Car accident Police were notified that someone had breathed his last following a car accident about 100 meters from Central Festival Pattaya Beach. The dead man was Pariwat Khemlit, 41, whose skull, arms and legs were broken. Nakorn Pookpan, 39, the dead man’s friend, reported that they were about to cross the road when a car, driven in high speed by a woman, hit them and drove away. The police searched for the car and found it parked in front of Tops Supermarket, Central Pattaya. There were traces that the car had recently been involved in an accident. The driver Itsara Thongprasart, 27, who admitted drinking alcohol with her friends in Sri Racha before driving, said she saw a big rubbish bag on the main road so she tried to avoid it, but the two men happened to cross the road at the same time and she accidentally hit them.

Police arrested a Sri Racha woman after reports that she had hundreds of tablets which could badly affect both the body and the brain. Investigators said they had been checking pharmacies and other locations after persistent reports that people were being robbed after being made unconscious. After learning that Sarisa Neeyaphudit, 44, was a pharmacy owner, they made their move. The accused woman admitted selling the drugs, mainly to women who worked at night and could not sleep properly in the daytime.

Rebranding Pattaya Again Continued from page 1

make a point of emphasizing their family orientation and the special activities on offer just for the kids. Visitors from some overseas countries, notably Russia, already see Pattaya as a family destination and frequently travel together as a group. Official views on the future of Pattaya’s nightlife are divided. Some officials believe that the city has already diversified and that raunchy entertainment is a declining part of the Pattaya market and its revenue generation. They point out that the city as a whole has expanded massively in the last 10 years while the number of clubs and bars has remained the same, or even fallen. It is also maintained that the unsavory side of the Pattaya tradition – for example child prostitution – has been dramatically reduced owing to ongoing police pressure. But other officials feel that raunchy nightlife should be restricted to certain

zoned areas. These always include the famed Walking Street and its environs and sometimes Sexy Soi 6, among others, as well as the main gay rendezvous in Boyztown and Sunee Plaza. Yet business operators in these areas frequently complain that income has substantially fallen in recent years. Sunee Plaza, for example, has many boarded-up shophouses. One view in local government circles is that Pattaya’s nightlife is already shrinking as traditional night-owl visitors from Europe, America and Australia are replaced by a new generation of Russian, Chinese and Indian visitors whose collective holiday aims may well be different. Other Thai cities pinpointed by the Thai tourism ministry include Bangkok which will be presented as a destination for heritage river cruises as well as a mecca for shopping, dining, and history and culture appreciation. Koh Phangan, famous for full moon parties, will be

transformed into a Thai-style fun resort which is safe for all. In Phuket, apart from sun-tanning and diving, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) businesses will be targeted. Finally, Nan province in the north is set to become an ecotourism magnet with an emphasis on healthy living. If officials can successfully rebrand their areas, the hope is that quality tourists will spend more and extend their stay. Last year the average length of stay in Thailand was 9.8 days, the longest in ASEAN, while spending per trip was also top at around 42,000 baht. Immigration figures suggest that the number of Asian nationals entering Thailand continues to grow, while the total from European countries is falling. This trend is likely to continue as Thailand lies at the heart of the ASEAN Economic Community, the main engine for future growth in the region, while much of Europe remains in the economic doldrums.

Beach patrols stepped up Chonburi police have announced that there will be more regular officers and volunteers on patrol over Christmas and New Year, especially on Pattaya Beach Road which is seen as pivotal for tourist safety. Plans have been made to make use of both foot and cycle patrols to act as a deterrent to bag snatchers, prostitutes, drug addicts and the like. Deputy mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said that a further dimension was the need to step up security ahead of the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community at the beginning of 2016.

Woman robbed Swede A Swedish tourist was fortunate that the Tourist Assistance Foundation handed over 10,000 baht to help him out of his difficulties. Cherif Hafsaoui, 68, was found sleeping in Pattaya police station after an evil woman he picked up stole 30,000 baht from his hotel room, leaving him well-nigh penniless. She had also stolen his credit card and he was unable to phone his son in Sweden for financial assistance. However, Kwanchanok Thana from Tourist Assistance Foundation came to the rescue and informed the Swedish embassy. The foundation also provided some help pending the arrival of new funds from the relative in Sweden. Hafsaoui said that he was absolutely desperate and was grateful for the assistance he had received.

Fine Dining Restaurant – 3-course at 375 Baht

Thailand’s main gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport, has launched the newly-installed automatic queue-card kiosks that aim to improve travelers’ access to taxi services, a move praised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) as helping to enhance the image of the Kingdom as a welcoming tourist destination. Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “The launch of these automatic queue-card taxi kiosks will facilitate passengers using the taxi services at the airport, to ensure that all taxis are acting in a welcoming manner to all tourists and travelers, and that their vehicles are safe and up to international standards.” The 10 new kiosks, to be found outside Gates 4 and 7 on the first floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s terminal building, are designed to cut waiting times to as little as five seconds by managing the queues and directing passengers to numbered taxi ranks, at the press of a button. Passengers in groups or with many bags will be

able to opt for one of the larger taxis to ensure they have enough space. These methods will reduce the processing time to allocate the taxi. Thawatchai said, “In the initial state, there are staff at these taxi kiosks to help obtain the queue cards for passengers. They help to expedite the queues, and in a country well-known for great hospitality as Thailand, these well-groomed and hospitable staff act as one of the first hosts that are ready to welcome all tourists and travelers arriving at our country’s first doorstep.” Under the new computerized system, taxi drivers will have to take passengers on a firstcome-first-served basis to any destination, either to Bangkok downtown or to other destinations; such as Pattaya. Passengers are required to pay the fee by the meter system, and are subject to a 50-baht airport taxi surcharge. In addition, the slip printed automatically by the new system will record all details of the taxi drivers and their vehicles, allowing officials to locate them instantly in case of a lost item.

Card cheats wore masks A 21-year-old man complained to police he had been the victim of a scam to steal cash, a gold necklace, and a mobile phone worth 70,000 baht. Nattapol Pawong said he accidentally met a group of people driving a Toyota car and agreed to play cards with them. But firstly they went to a restaurant where he was offered a suspicious-looking white powder which he refused to eat. Later they all played cards in a condo room but Nattapol began to feel dizzy as he was deprived of his belongings. News Public celebrates King’s birthday

Beach refill starts After many false starts, it appears that the long-delayed rebuilding of Pattaya beach will finally get underway early next year. This follows a cash injection of 430 million baht mainly in the next financial year. Erosion has already carried away so much sand that Pattaya beach has shrunk to as little as 3.5 meters in some places. New French restaurant Good reports about Bistrot de Paris on Third Road, close to the traffic lights on Soi 17, and promoted on a huge billboard as “Your 24-hour restaurant”. It really is open all day and night and offers some tasty French cuisine and Thai dishes at very reasonable prices. Interior decor reflects movie themes of the 1950s. Good selection of wines too. Chaos looming The huge construction work to build a bypass tunnel under parts of Sukhumvit to alleviate traffic congestion will undoubtedly create serious problems over the next year or two. One view says that more traffic must be diverted through east Pattaya by drastic changes to the flow on streets such as Siam Country Club, Noen Plubwan and Khao Talo. Sounds very confusing. And it is. An alternative solution Some observers believe that, rather than dislocating traffic on the Dark Side pending the construction of the aforesaid bypass tunnel, the best solution will be to enforce strict no parking regulations on Sukhumvit Road and some off-shoot sois. At the moment, illegal parking poses a major headache, especially when tour buses are around. Expect this debate to run for a while yet. Expensive fireworks As ever, the crowds were out in force for the two-night international fireworks display on Beach Road late last month. About 300 yards or so of the beach were cordoned off and you needed to have paid 300 baht for a ticket to obtain a ringside seat and a plastic chair. If that seems expensive, please note that the VIP area was a sell-out long before the fireworks started. Next year it could be 500 yards cordoned off. Indian weddings Pattaya is becoming most famous for the lavish Indian weddings staged by some of the five-star hotels here. Wealthy Indians not infrequently fly out 300-plus guests with their own chefs to ensure that a 24-hour Indian-style buffet is always available. Indian weddings are perhaps the resort’s most notable success in exploiting the MICE market (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions). Pattaya bridge club Meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Alto restaurant, more or less opposite Mr Mac’s apartments on Thrappaya Road. Be there by 12:45 p.m. for a prompt start at 1 p.m. It’s duplicate bridge and the standard is quite high. The organizers can always find you a partner for the afternoon if you are on your own and feeling the urge to play. High season kicks in It was a bit late in coming this year, but Pattaya hotels are now reporting much-increased occupancy as we head into Christmas and the New Year. Subjectively, the numbers of Brits and Scandinavians are holding up well, but it’s the Russians and the Chinese who are pouring into town. Expect to see many more restaurants catering for this market in the near future. Opinions expressed in this column are the author’s alone and do not necessarily represent those of Pattaya Today’s management.

Twilight Restaurant & Bar

at Centara Grand Modus Resort Pattaya by Mick and Di Barker

The latest addition to the Centara Group of Hotels and Resorts portfolio is their first design hotel in Pattaya, Centara Grand Modus Resort Pattaya, which is sited on Wong Amat beach directly beside the famous landmark, The Sanctuary of Truth. This is a 5-star property which features the new on-trend industrial chic interior design and is the third hotel under their branding in the city. The interior design is the creation of Thai architect Tossaporn Namthep, also known as Ajarn Joop, who has succeeded in created an astonishing eclectic design maintaining the industrial character of the building’s natural finishes while blending elements from Europe’s architectural past. Features include huge cast iron arches, Roman columns against raw cement walls, Gothic lamps, bespoke chandeliers plus velvet and leather sofas. Its location is stunning, sitting as it does on a small bay with no other hotel sharing the beach. There are two zones to this resort, beachside with low-rise buildings plus the tower. Mick and I were delighted to be invited to their signature restaurant, Twilight, to meet Executive Chef Goff (Alongkorn Seanganant) and to taste his newly created menu. Chef was classically trained at the famous Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok before moving on to some very prestigious resorts including the luxurious, Soneva Kiri by Six Senses on the island of Koh Kood. Twilight is situated on the roof of the beach wing and is surrounded by stunning wrap-around windows allowing the diners a 180-degree view of the beach and the sea. The menu is described as “bistro fare” but Chef Goff has put too much passion into his food for

such a modest label. This stylish restaurant segues into a lounge bar for al fresco eating, ocean views and the sipping of the bar’s handcrafted cocktails. The cuisine is firmly set in the Mediterranean with appetizers leaning towards Spanish tapas such as Manchego croquettes and grilled squid a la plancha with chorizo. We started our dinner with a dish of gambas al ajillo (B.280++). When it’s done perfectly this is a great dish; plump succulent prawns juicy and tender with a slight crunch from the garlic lying in extra virgin olive oil just waiting to be mopped up with crisp toast. Spanish crostinis were the next item to be tried; toasted bread arrived bearing its cargo of chopped tomatoes topped with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese. A simple dish to be sure but the flavors marry so well it was another resounding success. The Italian Fritto Misto winked at us (deepfried fish, calamari and prawns with an aioli sauce) but we finally settled on the not often spotted, Merguez sausages. Singing with flavors of spicy paprika lamb and accompanied by a house harissa sauce we enjoyed the sheer tang and kick from these Moroccan bangers. Pan-seared foie gras is high on the menu as is the Australian Wagyu carpaccio (B.260++) and all very reasonably priced.

Mick & Di MAYs URBAN THAI DINE The Food Lovers

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com

Thai to Remember

When Mick and I recently received a recommendation to visit a new Thai restaurant it was with considerable curiosity that we drove out onto Thepprasit Road, and more specifically, into the market in the shade of the remarkable Colosseum building. Masses of parking space, so no worries there, park to the left of the forecourt and about a hundred meters further down you’ll see the glinting sign of “MAYs” restaurant. It is truly set in the heart of Ratanakorn market but the charming Maypreeya “May” Cavin and her team have transformed the space into an on-trend contemporary eatery. It had only been open for two weeks when

we visited and more tables and chairs were waiting to be delivered but already it had a young, spirited vibe with enthusiastic waiting staff and a modish contemporary ambiance. A see everything kitchen sports a trio of industrial pendants to illuminate the pass where some food is prepared and others checked before service. The tables are set with pots of herbs, a long center table displays the bottles of spirits, liquors and wines that are available, and a wicker boat filled with natural ingredients welcomes at the entrance and the strains of up-beat world music fills the air. Chef/proprietor, May’s culinary pedigree spans the globe from

Complimentary tapas from Sips n' Bits

Dubai to Sri Lanka and back again to the Plaza Athénée in Bangkok. Her enthusiasm and passion is palpable and we have no doubt that this young, charming restaurateur will succeed in whatever mission she undertakes. Her aim at her eponymously named eatery is to serve grownup Thai street food but to put a spin of “Royal Cuisine”onto her dishes which are liberally doused with healthy herbs. Once seated and enjoying a cool glass of the house Chilean Chardonnay (B.750 by the bottle or B.150 for a 200 ml glass) we were able to browse May’s menu. Our meal began exceedingly well with our chosen appetizer of a pomelo salad (B.110), but before this we were served an amuse-bouche of the house deepfried shrimp cake. Copiously saturated in a sweet chili and lemongrass sauce it packed a big punch and we were well on our way to enjoying May’s

sweet spicy renditions. The pomelo salad was tart and citrusy with those big river prawns adding their buttery flavor. It was beautifully presented with a meadow of fresh mint, a sprinkling of fresh coriander and an orchid garnish. More items from the starter menu include papaya salad with grilled river prawn, spring rolls, a spicy calamari salad and a fresh crab meat salad (B.150). Next to arrive was May’s signature green chicken curry. Redolent with fresh coriander, kaffir lime leaves and basil the super tender chicken languished in its coconut bath. We loved this curry and would heartily recommend it to all you green curry lovers out there. Sea bass is the fish of preference on this menu and it comes steamed with lime chili or soy bean sauce (B.350), deep-fried with a mango, sweet chili sauce or sweet and sour sauce. May recommended another river prawn dish for us to taste, this time stir-fried with hot basil. Another star dish, freely tossed with lashings of red chili and basil it was indeed hot but not overly so and with the peppery, licorice flavors of the basil it proved to be another of our favorite dishes of the night. A platter of fresh Thai fruits brought our dinner to a refreshing conclusion. Just a few more details of this

interesting menu before we close. Crab is one of May’s top ingredients but on the Monday evening when we visited it was not available. When on hand it is served with black pepper sauce, stir-fried in a yellow curry or roasted with chili (B.350). That sea bass is also available in a yellow curry sauce and steamed mussels are fused with sweet basil. For meat eaters, grilled pork spare ribs are popular as is the beef curry, sautéed pork with roasted chili sauce and the ubiquitously loved, “gang garee gai”. Happy Hour is between 5 pm and 7:30 pm daily with all drinks at only B.99, while on Thursday and Friday the restaurant buzzes with jollity when complimentary modern Thai tapas are served during Sips n’ Bits promotion. In conclusion, there has to be a reason to traipse out to this market in the evening and Mays restaurant is that reason with bells and whistles. Do visit soon and see for yourself how this traditional Thai cuisine has been urban refined at this gem of a neighborhood restaurant.

La Route des Vins de Bordeaux

Another Distinguished Wine Dinner at The Royal Cliff’s deVine Wine Club

Wine lovers listen up! The deVine Wine Club has surpassed itself this time with its latest wine dinner featuring the wines of the historical Bordeaux wine merchant company, Borioe-Manoux which owns eight classified growth estates. Their export manager, Berenger Le Boursicot was on hand to host the evening, executive chef Walter Thenisch was at the helm to pair his exquisite food with the selected vintages and the evening was graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group. These gastro-oenophile events are naturally well attended and with the prospect of a degustation dinner paired with the wines of Bordeaux the anticipation was palpable. We gathered in the reception area for the first pouring of a Veuve Chantal Brut Blanc de Blanc accompanied by duck liver mousse macaroons, toast with a rich black and green

olive tapenade and polar fresh Brittany oysters doused in a luscious vichyssoise. Restraint was needed as we knew we had a 6-course gastronomic pageant of dishes to come. Once seated in the Royal Grill Room we were served a glass of Bordeaux Sauvignon A.B.C. Turpin Freres et Riout 2012 paired with a mackerel and Tasmanian salmon tartar with fruits de mer, and fava beans on a saffron sauce with a mussel foam. This lean and savory wine made a favorable impression at our table and chef Walter’s appetizer was a delight, clean, fresh flavors bounced from the plate complemented by the delicacy of the saffron sauce and cheeky mussel foam. An oven-roasted Barramundi steak followed served with a Bordeaux Blanc Chateau du Pin. This was one of our favorite courses the mild taste and delicate texture

of this fish accompanied by the sweetest sautéed endive on a beurre blanc sauce was exquisite. Coupled with the herbaceous aroma and crisp freshness of the chosen wine it was a memorable course. A cactus pear sorbet cleansed our palates before the powerhouse wines of the evening were due to be introduced. What else could accompany these grand cru wines but fillet of beef and indeed we were then served a grain-fed Charolais fillet with morels, bone marrow and baby vegetables. The wine escort for this course was a Chateau Mauvinon Saint-Emilion Vignobles Tribaudeau 2008. The beef with its rich red center was a brilliant piece of meat treated with care and finesse. Dressed with morels, a cube of scrumptious bone marrow and attended by baby vegetables and a deeply satisfying red wine reduction it was

Royal Cliff Hotels Group GM Antonello Passa, Berenger Le Boursicot, Panga Vathanakul, and Sri Siam Co., Ltd owner and chairman Anirut Posakrisna a culinary conquest. Served with the distinguished wine with its wellbalanced elegant tanins and long finish it was a triumph. A French cheese selection with dried fruits and fig bread was the pre-dessert offering. A round of burnished goat’s cheese sat on a piece of the specialty bread escorted by Brie de Meaux and a pressed or hard cheese which we identified as Comte. To accompany these dairy beauties was a Chateau Trotte Vieille Saint-Emilion 1er Grand-Cru Classe 2006, one of the oldest properties in St. Emilion and carries an eminent reputation. This particular vintage proved to be another favorite of the evening. Medium-bodied with an oak/red cherry/black raspberry nose, the pairing was incredible. After all this excitement the fresh raspberries with a vanilla

mousse with a white chocolate coated almond and violet raspberry ice cream was just heavenly and married with a Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 1er Cru Classe 2006; we had well and truly left and gone to heaven. The fragrant ice cream and subtle vanilla mousse made very good friends indeed with the classic Sauternes. With its golden color and aromas of blossom and stone fruit this archetypal label retained the prestige and reputation of this long standing dessert wine and sweetly brought down the curtain on another triumphant deVine Wine Club dinner. These superb deVine Wine Club dinners are held every few months and members and non-members are always welcome. Details on membership is on request from The Royal Cliff Hotels Group website on www.royalcliff.com.

fairness-fitness-finery After-sun facial program Vol. 02 No. 24 | Dec 16-31 2014

Being a tropical country, Thailand generally has hot and humid weather throughout the year. The sun can harm the skin and even cause damage, especially on the face, which is the most-commonly sunexposed area of the body. Sunscreen and after-sun by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen products are readily available and can help protect the skin, but there are instances where the effects of sun damage would need a more intensive treatment. Nicha Clinic offers an after-sun facial program--a luxurious spa treatment ideal for sun-exposed skin. This treatment is recommended particularly after outdoor activities or sunbathing. The process starts with a cold massage using after-sun massage oil to cool down and moisturize the skin. The gentle massage leaves the skin feeling silky and soft. Then a cool ozone-steaming machine with vacuum suction is used. The steam opens the facial pores and helps loosen clogged debris. At the same time, the facial steam can moisten, whiten and purify the affected skin and promote blood circulation. The suction draws out the dirt, oil and dry skin cells clogged in the pores on your face. Finally, a special ultrasonic facial device is used to stimulate collagen

production (increasing superficial toning and skin elasticity) and blood flow (bringing more oxygen and nutrients for healing). Avail of the special Christmas promotion for the after-sun program for only 999 baht until end of December (normal price is 1500 baht).

Twilight Restaurant & Bar >> from L1 Chef Goff chose our main courses and after a short interval Rack of lamb Provencal, Australian beef tenderloin with foie gras and pan-fried Norwegian salmon (we were three people) were served at our table. Salmon is a hit-andmiss business these days due to the huge amounts of the farmed fish being served, but here it was translucent in the center with just the right amount of “give” on the fleshy exterior. Chef had hot-smoked the fish and served it with a chive butter sauce and baby vegetables – ideal accompaniments which married perfectly. Ditto for the tenderloin, a superior piece of meat, brilliantly prepared and executed it was the ideal companion for the tranche of foie gras. The rack of lamb was perhaps a little too cooked for our tastes but we appreciated the flavoring in the pesto crust. Australian rib eye is also available. Desserts beckoned, fondant chocolate, raspberry crème brulee, tiramisu and for savory soles the French/Italian cheese plate (B.280 ++) or a deluxe Crottin de Chavignol on toast served with rocket crispy vegetable chips and nuts. Chavignol is the most famous goat cheese of the many varieties produced in the Loire Valley and is the claim to fame for the village of Chavignol, France. We three plumped for a tiramisu (luscious), a fondant chocolate (deliciously decadent) and a duo of panna cotta layed with fresh fruit purees which were proved to be a pair of creamy delights. Oh, My Gosh! The New BMW 420d Coupé Sport First-ever 4-Series Experience. UNFORGETTABLE A two-door dieselpowered rocket. A new Bee-Emm, now, longer, wider and lower. The brand new 4 Series... It’s the number 4. Added to the by John K. Lindgren BMW nomenclature Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com with the existing 1,2,3,5,6,7 and X and Z Series, the brand new 4 Series makes its debut as a two-door, fourseater coupé slotted between the sporty compact 3 Series and executive 5 Series saloon. Voila, the all-new “4” is a coupé. From the French verb to cut: couper. A saloon (sedan) that has been cut, horizontally and vertically. Only two doors – but four seats. Pattaya Today’s exclusive test drive. Initial impression: Alpine white

crisp paintwork, sharp nose, cat eye headlights, an elongated BMW kidney grille, black side gills and the long sleek hood (bonnet). The sculpted rear boasts the cool BWM taillight cluster and the badge: 420d. Side view: bulging, strong wheel arches. The 18-inch alloy wheels and a wide low, stance. The new 4 Series is slightly longer and wider than the 3 Series, but substantially lower, with a wider track which means low center of gravity providing excellent grip and handling; an invitation for serious, sporty driving. Step in. Take a seat in the individually adjustable, power multicontour leather seats. You’ll notice the frameless, wide doors. Interior: the layout will be familiar to anyone who’s been in a Bee-Emm 3 Series. Our demo unit comes with a red bold interior trim and leather

upholstery including that special BMW scent, luxury new car smell. The wide doors provide easy access to the rear seats. Ceiling a tad low but ample leg space, armrests and cupholders included. The rear boot (trunk) has a capacity of 455 liters of luggage. The cockpit is from the 3 Series, all BMW logical, smart design combined with high-quality feel. Easy-to-operate buttons for the audio and A/C. In the center of the dashboard the infotainment screen connected to BMW’s circular iDrive controller. The multifunction steering wheel is still one of best in the market with excellent grip for sporty driving. When the vehicle is stationary there’s a proper sturdy handbrake. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by Magna Carta Law Office

Buying an Existing Business in Thailand What are the pros and cons of buying an existing business in Thailand vs. starting a new business? Before you take over an existing business or start a new one, you should fully understand all the downsides related to both options. An existing business already has an established customer base, an established location, inventory and suppliers, trained employees and a reputation in the market; you only have to improve or keep up on what has already been achieved. Starting a business is certainly risky having to deal with many uncertainties, especially with regards to profitability and customers’ response to the company’s products and/or services. When purchasing a business, the financial statement of the business somehow helps to establish a value for the company. The company may show significant receivables on the balance sheet, but the question is whether these can actually be collected or will eventually be written off as bad debts. When you start a company, you will be in full control and will be able to develop the business according to your own specifications. You can gather your own management team as you can have the freedom to select the best people you can find and those who can work well with you and as a team. When you buy a business, you absorb the people already in place and it takes time to get rid of the poor performers. In an existing company, the new owner may struggle to implement changes because the policies and procedures are already in effect. What are the significant concerns to ask a business owner before acquiring their business? Addressing the current business owner, these significant concerns can help you assess the existing business. - It is important to ask for all the documentation that can help you confirm the revenue history of the business. This will give you a clear idea of how the business has been doing over the past years. You may also want to find out how much money has been flowing in and out of the business on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Proper accounting of the expenses and revenues will give you a good idea of the potential profitability of the business. - You need to be aware of any impending legal responsibilities associated with the business. Find out whether the existing owner is aware of any past, current or potential legal disputes related to the business operations. Find out if the business has any contract disputes, employment disagreements, leasing issues, or government regulation issues. - The business owner needs to provide a financial record of assets and liabilities of the business. Find out what the business owns, and what the business owes. Do the assets outweigh the liabilities? Is the owner aware of any financial assets or liabilities that do not appear in the company’s records?

Bonds – are they right for you? If you haven’t heard of portfolio bonds, chances are it’s only because you haven’t spoken to a financial adviser. Simply defined, they are structures within which multiple savings and investment solutions can be housed. They are also referred to as “wrappers”, because all your investment choices are basically “wrapped up” inside the one account. Portfolio bonds are available from leading, well-known financial institutions. Within these secure structures you can hold virtually any asset that’s not physical property. Pros and cons of portfolio bonds The potential benefits and disadvantages of these bonds depend on an individual’s circumstances, and anyone contemplating their options should certainly take expert advice. However, let’s start with the pros of portfolio bonds:

- It is necessary for you to obtain from the business owner a copy of any written contracts entered into by the business so you can be aware of all contractual obligations. - The business owner must be required to produce evidence that the business is properly registered with the government agencies in the district in which it operates. Ask the business owner for copies of all documents related to government taxes which include tax returns, tax ID numbers, and more. What can I do to safeguard my potential investment? Buying a business in Thailand involves a huge amount of money, so the legal and financial aspects of buying a business are extremely important. It is recommended to seek legal assistance and have a competent lawyer and accountant perform due diligence on the existing business you plan to take over. Due diligence is a procedure performed to review and verify all the relevant information about the business you are considering. A competent lawyer will be able to: - verify important details regarding the target company, such as its registration details, current directors, current shareholder list, recent financial statements, and any outstanding back taxes - assist in drafting and preparing the share transfer agreements and a contract detailing any other terms and conditions regarding the sale of the company - prepare the legal documents and government forms necessary to register the restructuring of the company Can I purchase only the business without purchasing the company running the business? Yes, the business alone can be purchased excluding the company running it. This option is beneficial to you as the buyer because the liabilities involving the first company will not be absorbed by the new business owner. But this option may need to consider such cases where there are business licenses that are difficult or no longer possible to obtain.

Pros: • Because anti-money laundering and “know your customer” due diligence only has to be done once when you establish the portfolio bond, from then on you can swap and change how you invest very easily. This avoids a great deal of red tape, which can have time- and stress-saving benefits. • As you can hold such a wide array of assets within a portfolio bond, you have maximum investment choice and maximum portfolio diversification benefits. • An individual’s portfolio bond should be personally tailored to suit your investment objectives, risk profile and financial goals. What’s more, you can maintain such a structure for as long as you like; they are not close-ended. • You can start, stop or alter income, as required. • Accordingly, portfolio bonds can be utilized by those seeking an income from their investments, or those concentrating on capital growth. • Administrative simplicity. Usually a fax or email dealing form is sufficient to move and change how and where your money is invested. • Wrappers can be as near as 100 percent secure as exists, with no tax deducted from capital or income withdrawals for those UK nationals who are non-resident for tax purposes and many other expatriates not resident in their home country. • Portfolio bonds have been heavily utilized by those expatriates adversely affected by the European Union Savings Taxation Directive (chiefly, they can help you avoid being signed up to either automatic exchange of information about your savings income between your country of residence and your home country, or withholding tax). • For Britons considering moving back to the UK one day, it is possible to take 5 percent income tax-free for 20 years from a portfolio bond – meaning that expats who repatriate aren’t necessarily caught out by their assets offshore. • Due to the scale of their operations, institutional discounts are available through some portfolio bond providers offering significant savings on management fees normally charged by major investment houses on individual investors. • Bonds can also form the investment vehicle inside an ‘offshore trust’. Because the above list identifies a great number of potential positives, it’s easy to see why so many of these solutions have been successfully sold to expatriates. However, there are downsides to portfolio bonds that should not be overlooked. Cons: • If you’re likely to need access to over 90 percent of your underlying assets in the short term, you should not opt for a portfolio bond. • There is an additional layer of charging with a portfolio bond that you wouldn’t be subjected to if you held the wrapped assets individually, i.e., you have to pay for the management and maintenance of the portfolio bond structure. • Depending on where the assets are invested within the wrapper (marketrelated holdings), the value of a portfolio bond and any income taken from it can go down as well as up and may not be guaranteed; meaning you may not get back all the money you invested. • There are minimum limits on the amount of money you need to have to invest within portfolio bonds. Generally that figure is 50,000 GBP or equivalent currency. Who can benefit from, and who should avoid, portfolio bonds? Because the above list of benefits is extensive, it’s easy to understand why so many expatriate financial advisers hold portfolio bonds in high regard. And yes, they may well be beneficial for you. However, there are circumstances that may make them inappropriate. Ensure you consider your tax status including residency, the charges associated with a portfolio bond and keep back any short-term requirement for capital, prior to opting for one of these solutions. Taking expert financial advice is key to ensuring the decision is right for you and your investments. Extracts from an article by Rhiannon Davies. The Thai Economy and the Pattaya Real Estate Sector Yes, the Thai economy and the Pattaya real estate sector have been through a lot over the past year and many are noticing the negative effects on tourism and business in general. The question on everyone’s mind now is, “Will this downward trend continue?” Economists and pundits seem to agree that recent economic indicators point to a positive outlook that bodes well for a much-needed recovery. In my 23 years here, Thailand has consistently been able to recover from all such downturns—and usually quite quickly. As the famous Thai expat handbook says, “Thais Do Mean Business,” and the Thai business sector is as robust and as driven as any in the world. Just when many of us are starting to scratch our heads and ask, “Is this going to get any better anytime soon?” I am noticing positive signs of recovery and growth for Thailand. For one, the rice industry- -an economic powerhouse that took a big hit during the previous regime--is not only a major source of the nation’s income from exports; it has long been the foundation of the vast farming community as well as a reflection of the Thai identity. Thai Jasmine rice is seen as the best in the world, and Thailand had long been the leading exporter of rice. These were a few ‘championship belts’ that the country lost in the past two years as Vietnam and India surpassed Thailand in rice exports, Hong Kong surpassed Thailand in Jasmine Rice exports, and Cambodia picked up the title for World’s Best Jasmine Rice. After such devastating punches over the

past 24 months, we had some absolutely great news last week from Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikalaya who reported that the Thai rice industry has finally managed to become the world’s largest rice exporter once again, exporting more than 10 million tons (34.5 percent of global rice exports) so far this year, with Vietnam and India in not even close second and third place with 4 million tons each exported in the same time period. He also indicated that Thailand is on a path to retake its place as the world’s largest jasmine rice exporter. Now that’s a comeback that Thais can be proud of. But it’s not the only sector that is looking up. Two economic experts recently made exciting GDP projections for next year. At the Thailand Economic Outlook 2015 seminar, Suppawut Saichuea, chairman of Phatra Capital Public Company Ltd., predicted that the export sector would perform better in 2015 thanks to the rapid global economic recovery. He said that the sector would become an essential element in the Kingdom’s potential to achieve economic growth of at least 3.7 percent. And last month, Ekniti Nitithanprapas, deputy director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said that the Finance Ministry is confident that the economy will grow by more than 4 percent. Thai exports in general are also showing great improvement as their value in October 2014 expanded by nearly 4 percent, the highest in 21 months. The Nation reported earlier this month that November inflation dipped to a five-year low

as the Consumer Price Index rose 1.26 percent, the smallest expansion inflation in five years, according to the Commerce Ministry. The Thai rice industry, exports, GDP and lower inflation all are showing signs of recovery. And that’s not all. It was recently announced by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Amnuay Patise that eight Chinese rubber processing entrepreneurs are interested in investing in Thailand’s rubber industry which could further boost Thai exports. Although having dropped 20 percent over

the past 12 months, Thailand’s automotive industry is now projected to make a good recovery next year as some major car manufacturers begin the next phase of the ecocar scheme with its new and lower excise tax making Thailand’s eco-cars less expensive. I must say there are an awful lot of great economic indicators for Thailand as a whole, but how will this affect the property market in the Pattaya area? Well no one is more surprised than I am at how the Pattaya area new condo construction just seems to go on and on with no end in sight. In print and personally in seminars I predicted the end of the Pattaya condo boom almost two years ago. But where’s the crash? The Eastern Seaboard’s new condo construction sector just seems to keep growing and growing, and although nothing like we saw a few years ago, local developers seem to have absolutely no fear as they continue launching one more condominium after another. I wrote recently about the fantastic growth being shown in the Jomtien area, particularly on Second Road. Now we are seeing some substantial growth in the Na Jomtien and Bangsaray areas with new condominium launches there as well. I hope to see the house and condo resale sector soon reap some of the benefits of Thailand’s renewed growth. After being flat for a good number of years, the resale sector saw some signs of growth during the last year or so, but the current economic situation hit that market hard once again in recent months while adjusting to the new Thai government. A better house and condo resale market would really make my day and brighter days for many local property owners as well. television presentations, having written regularly for many of the area’s leading newspapers and magazines (Bangkok Post, Thailand Property Report, Tropical Homes Magazine, Real Estate Magazine Thailand, The BigChilli, Tattler, Homes and Condos Magazine, and others). 2014 Year-end Special

O

ver the past year, the views of prominent general managers (GMs) and community leaders have been the focus of GM Outlook in Pattaya Today’s Property and Business section. The perspectives of GMs are particularly noteworthy inasmuch as it is these same captains of industry who have helped to transform the resort into the robust, world-class city. While maintaining its image as Thailand’s leading entertainment capital, Pattaya now also lays claim to five-star hotels and shopping malls, some of the grandest and most prestigious high-rise condominiums and luxury villas, a wide variety of sports venues, unparalleled dining, expanded recreational attractions for the entire family, and a surge in business and commercial investments and opportunities. MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) are now embedded into the area’s marketing strategies. What follows is a summary of GM Outlook portrayals featured in this newspaper in 2014.

Yigal Yonah Heli

Manmohan Singh Chawla

Yigal Yonah Heli knows what happiness is Global Top Group’s director, Israeli-born Yigal, knows that what people want is a comfortable home with the best quality and design. He says his own happiness is giving people the best. The construction company, one of the best known and trusted names in real estate, operates under its own capital and has a strategic selection of affiliates for its various projects. Yigal began investing in Pattaya nine years ago when it became clear that the price of quality units was going upwards and that the time was ripe for purchasing a home and providing rental income. “In my business,” says Yigal, “you must never stop being creative and planning for the future. Another Blue Sky treasure in Pattaya Blue Sky director Manmohan Singh Chawla, the key marketing man in this expanding company, knows that the enterprise has made huge commercial strides in recent years. A recent condominium project is the 10-rai The Venetian which has the original theme of capturing the classic highlights of Italy’s “city of love” with its endless river-style stream weaving its way through the property, gondolas to take a local sightseeing tour and other Italian landmarks. Asked what is the secret of Blue Sky’s success, Manmohan says the priority is to negotiate with each customer on an individual basis and to deliver what you promise.

community leaders Expecting the best at Tara Pattana Tara Pattana International School is impressive with its landscaped gardens, new purpose-built buildings and first-rate facilities. Head teacher Peter Hartnell actually began here as a teacher in 2010 when the school first opened its doors to students. He’s a graduate of several British universities and taught for many years in UK before beginning a new career in Thailand in 2000. “We want staff to notice if a child has a pair of new shoes or a new haircut and to remember their birthdays. With the right kind of teacher-pupil relationship, the sky is the limit for childhood achievement.” Peter is no remote administrator. He has a full teaching load and does most of his administration after three in the afternoon.

Let’s Dance with Arsen Kishishian The Let’s Dance studio on Thepprasit Road is a Latin dance school for all, irrespective of age and standard. The co-founder Arsen Kishishian has received acclaim from all over the world with championship titles from Australia, Japan and UK. He has spent decades learning, performing, teaching and mastering his craft, believing that dancing has the ability to provide joy and inspiration as well as the ability to change lives. Born in the Ukraine, he comes from a sporting family and a father who was a professional basketball player. Let’s Dance is yet another first for Pattaya as the number of tourist attractions continues to expand and to diversify.

Bringing Hope to the Needy Canadians Fred and Dianne Doell, founding pastors of Mercy Pattaya, know that poverty, hunger and exploitation are still to be found in our fair city. The expansive organization they lead runs a children’s home, visits slums with food and medical supplies and runs a scholarship project as well as other charitable ventures. Mercy Pattaya is becoming busier as Pattaya becomes increasingly a concrete jungle. Fred and Dianne are devoted to looking beyond the glitter and bright lights and offer means of support to vulnerable children as well as other disadvantaged groups in society.

Barry Kenyon’s many retirements Barry has had so many jobs in Pattaya that he’s practically lost count. He started off teaching English in the early 1990s, then started Pattaya bridge club and was for many years the British honorary consul. Not to mention being an assistant information officer at the Immigration Bureau and a deputy editor of Pattaya Today a few years back. This year he published his memoirs, a mixture of seriousness and humor, about his long period helping Brits sort out any serious problems. He says he couldn’t envisage living anywhere else and believes Pattaya is a great city “warts and all”.

Fred and Dianne Doell

Apichart Gulati Grande Caribbean not just a condominium The 1000-plus unit Grand Caribbean Condo Resort has become one of the city’s most famous edifices, situated strategically and magisterially on Thappraya Road between Pattaya and Jomtien. The brainchild of Blue Sky Group, this is a five-star development that looks and feels different. Project manager Apichart Gulati says there has been a determined attempt to get away from the box-type dwellings which had long dominated the condo market. Instead there’s a turnkey approach offering top quality accommodation and every luxurious facility. Apart from the foreign market, there has been sustained interest from Thais seeking a second home or working in the area. One of the child-orientated features of this development, two wooden interactive pirate ships with sun decks, has become particularly famous as a landmark feature.

Family recipe for business success Premier Homes Real Estate is the Eastern Seaboard’s longest-established corporate relocation company as well as acting as the region’s sales and leasing agent for exclusive properties. American-born Clayton Wade has been in the real estate business for nearly 30 years and has been running Premier Homes for two thirds of that time with his Thai wife Supap. They both have their eyes firmly fixed on the future. Having seen gigantic changes in the Pattaya skyline over the years, they firmly believe this is a city that never sleeps and will go on expanding apace. They like to quote the famous song by Randy Bachman, “You ain’t seen nothing yet”.

restaurateurs Wine Cellar Naklua is a gem Naklua Soi 12 has a treat in store for lovers of fine wine and cuisine: the Wine Cellar Naklua. Swiss entrepreneur Roger Leuzinger, the branch manager as well as the Eastern Seaboard manager, is a major player in the wine wholesale and retail business in Thailand. The restaurant itself also houses a quite remarkable cold delicatessen counter just inside the main entrance with its mouth-watering display of European cheeses, prosciuttos, salamis and cured meats. The dining menu includes pasta of various kinds, Australian steaks and lamb chops, Roger Leuzinger seafood and several of Roger’s own specialties, including the renowned fondue in four varieties. The most popular is the hot-melted Swiss Cheese Fondue which is the national dish and served at your table with bread. Alibaba Restaurant – 30 years on First opened in 1984, Alibaba Indian restaurant is in the same location and just as popular as ever. Now the key figure in the enterprise is Pavit Grover, son of pioneer Haprit, who is busily expanding the restaurant business into other cuisines including the Fire and Stone pizzeria occupying the premises of the former tailor shop next to the restaurant. Not to mention the new 30-35-room hotel at the side of the Alibaba which will open Pavit Grover during 2015. Yet the Alibaba itself remains the centerpiece of the activities. Even though the number of Indian restaurants in the greater Pattaya area is now reaching 80, this is the one still sitting astride them all.

GM Outlook empowered women The French Riviera in Pattaya After the Seven Seas Condo and Savanna Sands, developer Universal Group has now announced Seven Seas Cote d’Azur. The term Cote d’Azur was coined in 1887 for the beautifully-blue Mediterranean coastline of southeast France, including the sovereign state of Monaco. Sonia Punjabi, Universal chief executive officer, says, “We feel we are breaking new ground with this project which owes its entire ethos and appearance to the actual Cote d’Azur. French style architecture permeates the buildings, the alleys, the promenades and even the street lighting.” The many family-orientated attractions include the unique St Tropez clubhouse covering 2,000-square meters--the biggest facility of its kind in Chonburi province. Dental Smile is smiling at you One of the bestknown sites on Pattaya Third Road is the welcoming billboard promoting Dental Smile, one of the leading dental practices in a city which is not short of dentists. Dental Smile, however, is best described as a dental hospital rather than a clinic. Inside the spacious Natchawakorn Khantawat accommodation there’s a comfortable waiting area, a range of the latest technology including x-ray and top expertise in all areas of dentistry. Dental Smile offers durability and beauty and is famous for its “smile” transformations, bringing the same skill to simple fillings or cleaning and polishing or to the more complex tasks including the “all-in-4” technique, a revolutionary technology which gives a complete set of nonremovable replacement teeth in less than two weeks.

The family-friendly hotel on North Pattaya Beach Road now has the 367-room Kate Gerits Bay Tower complemented by the 200-room Executive Tower which will concentrate on the corporate business segment which is a rapidly expanding part of the local hotel industry. Kate, one of the few female general managers in the Chonburi area, predicts that she will be joined by many more female colleagues in the years to come.

hospitality management Matthew Fryar and “Wow” Occupying eight acres of tropical gardens, the 298-room Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa has been a flagship for quality hospitality since 1978. Director of Operations Matthew Fryar, an extrovert Australian with 20 years experience in the hospitality industry, points out that the “Wow” factor is vital in today’s competitive world. Whether it is the attraction of the breezy lobby of traditional wood, the oasis of lush gardens or the exceptional Thai cuisine, guests can enjoy the best of both worlds at Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa: an attractive hideaway and relaxing beach scene coupled with easy access to the vibrant Pattaya attractions a short distance away.

Business success with Allan Ottesen Allan’s father and stepmother were early pioneers of low-rise condominium projects and serviced apartments in Pattaya. Now largely retired, they have passed the overall responsibility to Allan who is head of the portfolio of business interests which include Jomtien Boathouse, The Residence Garden, Captain’s Corner Steakhouse and Jomtien Beach Residence. The family businesses are still based in the Jomtien area which clearly has the strongest growth prospects in the entire city. Multilingual Allen puts down his personal business success to the training given to him by his father and the fact of his Thai nationality which enables him to communicate effectively with both customers and networks.

As Pattaya already equals Bangkok when it comes to attractions and facilities, Rudolf stresses that customer expectations in the hospitality business must always be exceeded. His business philosophy is summed up by the phrase, “Happy Team Happy Guests”. A strong trend now is the rise of the corporate market, and the hotel benefits from two floors of facilities including a lavish business center and state-of-the-art technology. Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya With 555 luxurious and spacious rooms and suites all facing the ocean, Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort in Wong Amat is Asia’s only themed hotel on its own beachfront. Swiss-born Andre Brulhart, general manager, emphasizes the importance of the Lost World theme–owing much to Jules Verne and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle--in the success of the resort and its particular resonance with children. Brulhart says the secrets of success in hospitality are geographical location, high service standards, excellent food, luxurious surroundings, leadership skills and managing to predict the future. That’s where Andre scores the extra points.

Marketing the Amari Pattaya Amari Pattaya is part of the Onyx Hospitality Group which is owned by the family behind the Italian-Thai Development Public Company. Executive assistant manager Sukanyapach Homchuen believes that when you market a first-class hotel, you also help to promote the city. She stresses that Pattaya is no longer a predominantly nightlife destination and that the choice of hotels, malls, restaurants and recreation facilities is as good as those offered in Bangkok. A major element in the Amari success story is that it has catered over the years for very different catchments including the foreign holidaymaker, the Thai domestic market, the corporate traveler, families, conventions and niche markets such as Indian weddings. “When most of your guests have been here before,” Sukanyapach says, “then you know you are on the right lines.”

Maria Gequillana Updating the legendary Royal Cliff The PR and marketing communications manager of the Royal Cliff, which occupies 64 acres of parkland, is Maria Gequillana, a welltravelled and multilingual marketing and psychology graduate with a passion for the hospitality industry. “Marketing these days,” she says, “is not just a strategy but rather a principal framework for management as a whole.” Her diverse role includes worldwide promotion of the facilities of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group and PEACH, also covering partnerships, special events, community relations and media liaison. Asked what is the secret of the Royal Cliff’s success over many years, she says “It has maintained the true hospitality and service values of the 1970s while always planning for the future.”

Steering the course at Cape Dara The majestic tower raises a full 26 storeys, a reminder that ‘dara’ in Thai means ‘stars’. Tanin Suphavittayakorn was appointed as executive assistant manager at Cape Dara Resort a year ago. “My key role,” he says, “is to keep happy the staff, the management, the owner and, above all, the guests.” He’s an enthusiastic supporter of the North Pattaya Alliance, a grouping of neighborhood hotels which are promoting the area as a destination in its own right under the caption “North Pattaya – More Than You Think.” A graduate of Rangsit University, Tanin always wanted to be a chef even as a young boy. He still maintains that interest even though his responsibilities are very much broader.

Style at Centara Grand Phratumnak Carl Duggan, a British veteran of the international hospitality industry, was appointed acting general manager of the Tulip Group’s Centara Grand Phratumnak. A fluent Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, he first came to Thailand in 2002 and instantly fell in love with the place. He sees the opportunity to work in Pattaya as a dream come true and sees his role as providing authentic hospitality and exceptional customer care, while helping to develop Pattaya as a high-end resort for both Thai nationals and the discerning international traveler. A star attraction of the hotel is the Ruffino Restaurant and Lounge which is a haven for Italian-inspired cuisine and comfort food.

The uniqueness of Siam@Siam There are many reasons why Siam@Siam Design Hotel Pattaya, one of the largest and best-known landmarks on Second Road, is so very different. It has the highest swimming pool in the city linked in turn to the latest hi-tech fitness center and a grandiose meetings-and-exhibitions facility. The new general manager is Azerbaijanborn Dmitry Chernyshev who has travelled the world building up an impressive CV. He’s proud of the hotel with its bold colors everywhere you look, industrial themes, vivid underwater scenes – all creating a unique mix which is the amazing signature style of Siam@Siam. Dmitry sums it up as “charismatic service blended with surprising artistry.”

Tips & Advice

What Our

Readers Say

UK Pensioner Outlook

(Barry Kenyon writes) British expat retirees in Pattaya, and indeed round the world, are waiting with considerable unease to next year’s British budget. The danger is that they will lose their UK personal allowance of 2,000 pounds a year. That is 20 percent of tax-free income of the first 10,000 pounds. Married expats, each with a personal allowance, or those with substantial income and thus paying the higher tax rate of 40 percent stand to lose even more of their hardearned cash to the Treasury. Earlier this year, the British Chancellor announced that he believed that UK expats were treated more leniently than those of most other EU countries as regards tax. Therefore, he set up a committee to look into the issue in detail and said that he was looking for an easy-to-understand formula for treating British retirees and other tax payers living overseas. The easiest-to-understand formula would indeed be to abolish the tax-free safety net on the first 10,000 pounds of income for anyone residing overseas. The term “residing” isn’t defined, but probably refers to anyone without substantial links with UK. One option would be to exclude from personal allowances anyone spending more than half the year abroad. Not everyone would be hit hard. Some retirees might be able to pay tax on their

Businessman’s status Q: Does a foreign businessman need a work permit to attend relevant meetings in Thailand? A: No, he doesn’t. But one who will be using authorization power while in the country would do. Business operatives who come to Thailand to visit an exhibition do not need a work permit, although he would require one to open a booth at a trade fair unless it was a state-run enterprise. Learning visas Q: I have heard that the government has recently introduced two-year education visas and I wondered if you have any information on this. A: No, student visas are still not available for longer than 12 months although renewal is possible – sometimes subject to the immigration policer being satisfied that learning and improvement have occurred as regards the Thai language. However, foreign teachers can now apply for a two-year work permit provided that their contract firmly guarantees a job during that period of time. Medical tourism Q: I have heard that a foreigner coming to Thailand

income in Thailand, where tax rates are lower, and Thailand and the UK do have a taxation treaty. Rich people, as ever, might be able to employ accountants to hide from taxation some or all of their income. However, there are hundreds of UK pensioners in Pattaya alone who would not be able to scamper. They are the former public officials and local government workers (eg teachers, social workers, police, firemen) whose occupational pensions are paid directly by the state. Even old age pensions, frozen in Thailand and many other countries, would come under the Chancellor’s hammer. Of course, nothing is yet set in concrete. It is possible that those former employees of the state who draw all their income from state occupational pensions and, or, the old age pension might be exempted. Or the Chancellor might exempt the old age pension from his calculations in countries, like Thailand, where it is frozen for life. He might even decide to scrap the whole idea or simply tax up to the hilt those who are earning income by renting out property in the UK and living on the income. Tax experts more or less agree that something is in the wind, but nothing will be sure until the next budget speech in March 2015. Contrary to some reports, the Chancellor can set tax rates without parliamentary approval or a vote.

to seek medical treatment can obtain a three-month visa. Is this so? A: Yes, the discretion was originally for Middle East nationals but has now been extended to others. It would be best to apply for the visa in advance in your home country and show a letter from the Thai hospital detailing the proposed treatment and dates. Such a visa could be extended in Thailand provided updated information was provided by the hospital before the expiry of the visa. Medical tourism is seen as a niche market and is encouraged by the Thai authorities. Online reporting Q: The foreign expat population has been promised online reporting of the 90 days stay for many years, so what is the current position? A: Yes it has been stated many times that this is possible. One can only say that it’s best to check with your local Immigration Bureau to see what the precise situation there is. Some bureaus are better organized to provide the service than others. You also need to be clear exactly what documents and copies you need to provide. UK length of stay Q: I believe I no longer need a visa in advance, as a British citizen, if I wish to stay in Thailand for 60 days (54 days actually). How is this possible? A: You would receive 30 days on arrival at the airport and the latest regulation – for some nationalities including yours – is that you can renew for a further 30 days at an Immigration Office for 1,900 baht. However, after this you must leave the country.

Snap Judgment Forward into 2015

It has certainly been a year to remember. As 2014 dawned, the country was facing the prospect of violent street demonstrations and bombings of civilians which ended abruptly when the military coup was effected last May. The reason why most people still support that drastic intervention, one of many in the past 60 years, is that public law and order still prevails on the streets. The upside of the junta rule must also include settling of the rice subsidy disaster of the previous government, or at any rate paying the farmers what was their due. There has also been some progress in sorting out taxi and motorbike scams and clearing up public beaches, even though it is too early to make a definitive judgment. Latterly, the subject of police corruption has been in the news with a number of surprising arrests which would have been unheard of in by-gone days. On the accountability front, it is good news that some politicians have to declare their assets, although it is far from clear why members of the National Reform Council, charged with writing a new constitution, have been exempted. The junta has now confirmed that the next general election won’t be until 2016 and not in 2015 as earlier hinted. This means for sure that the military government will lead Thailand into the ASEAN Economic Community, a free-trade zone of 10 countries, to be formally launched in a little over a year from now. On the negative front, martial law is still with us and is likely to remain well into next year. The government says it is necessary because of ongoing opposition to its rule. Martial law has barely affected most tourists and it is easy for farang to assume it’s not so important. But martial law gives the powers-that-be a lot of extra clout, especially when it comes to arresting people day or night and, in some cases, trying them in military courts which do not permit an appeal. It has been suggested that martial law should be lifted in tourist areas such as Pattaya, to which the government replies that organized opposition might well move to freed-up districts. Free speech has been a victim of the coup which is virtually inevitable. The question is whether banning websites and discouraging demonstrations can ever bring about reconciliation, or whether the ongoing crackdown will merely solidify opposition which will burst forth sooner or later. Increasingly, people are less impressed by official censorship since they take their views and cues from the social media. Facebook, Twitter and the rest may not rule the world, but their influence is pervasive especially among younger citizens. So what can we expect in 2015? There will be a new constitution and perhaps a lot of new regulations never seen before in Thailand. For example, it is possible (not certain) that there will be proposals to make the prime minister and the Cabinet directly elected by the people. We could also see a lifetime ban on politicians found guilty of corruption and even a reduction in the total number of MPs to tackle the issue of party-list members who have not been elected in any case. The biggest challenge for the government is likely to be the economy. Growth rates have been revised downwards which means that Thailand may not be an economic leader at the launch of ASEAN as had once been predicted. It is also no exaggeration to say that Thailand has a lot of preparatory work to do in the next year. To give one example, the international language of ASEAN will be English. Outside of tourist areas, a great deal of learning among officials has to occur on the language front. Here in Pattaya, 2015 will also be momentous. In January the reconstruction of Sukhumvit begins, underground tunnels and all, which is going to mean worse traffic jams than at present before the green light begins to shine in 2018, assuming we are lucky. There is also to be a new one-stop police shop at Bali Hai pier where more or less any tourist problem can be sorted out, as there will be a 24-hour service manned by all police departments. As always in Thailand, let’s wait and see.

Youth Focus Schools are about people not paper There is one thing that parents always like to talk to me about at the school gates. They recall so vividly and so fondly their memories of their schooldays. One thing occurs every time – they remember the personalities that shaped their lives and they can point to specific incidents which changed them in some way, inspired them, or without exaggeration, made them what they are today. I remember my first day at school as a five-year-old as if it were yesterday – even though it was actually almost 60 years ago! I remember being led with a feeling of awe, expectation and uncertainty through a maze of brightly-decorated corridors and then abandoned unceremoniously with Miss Miller, who was sitting at a piano in the midst of a group of bewildered toddlers, but who smiled sympathetically and reassuringly before the great classroom door... and my school

life began. A couple of hearty choruses of “Old MacDonald’s Farm” later I was at ease. A seemingly anarchic playtime later, prodded and quizzed by what appeared to me to be giant children, then some enthusiastic coloring with the fattest and brightest crayons I had ever seen, stored in an old Bird’s Custard tin, and a burgeoning friendship with a boy called Colin, whose gangling height and freckled face reminded me of a giraffe, and my first school day was over. It was the first of many, many days to be spent in school both as a pupil and then as a teacher. Strangely, the things that seem to preoccupy me now, accreditation application forms, lesson plans, policies and appraisal forms, play no part in my previous life as a pupil. I can hardly remember a single lesson in all those years, except for the day that Gus, our benign chemistry teacher’s

demonstration with phosphorus, went wrong and his spotless white lab coat suddenly burst into flames. What I remember from school are the people. It was the personalities, the quirks, the kindness and the cruelty of the teachers and the students who stand out in my memory as the heroes and the villains of my school life story. The lesson I learned and always still try to remember is that schools are about people. We enter the world of learning as strangers in a strange land. We have a whole new culture to explore and we look for allies among our friends and from the ranks of the teachers we meet for somebody to take an interest in our plight and to guide us on our way. As teachers we should never forget what school and the process of learning look and feel like from a child’s point of view. Every child is different and brings his or her own history, interests and talents

to school with them every day. Every child constructs their own image of what school means to them. A good teacher will be a willing accomplice in helping to form a positive picture of schooling by understanding how each child sees things. There is often pressure in a school to treat every child as the same and to feed them all the same diet of information and knowledge. Every child, on the other hand, wants to be seen as a unique and special individual and wants to have their own special qualities recognized. At Tara Pattana International School we want our students to wake up feeling as if every day was Christmas Day. We want them to have the same feelings of joy, expectation and discovery about coming to school as they do about Christmas.

by Peter Hartnell

If we can get half way to doing that, then we will have given our children a worthy, valuable and truly memorable present. Merry Christmas. Peter Hartnell is head teacher at Tara Pattana International School.

Real World Applications; an Incentive to Learn by Dan Nicholson

At any stage of education it is important that, whenever possible, the purpose of the learning in the classroom is clear to the students and that they can see that their knowledge has some relevance to life outside the classroom. This is particularly important in primary school, when children begin to ask questions such as ‘Why do I go to school? Why do I need to know this?’ In early primary education, reading, writing and mathematics are probably the most important skills the children must learn and are arguably among the most important skills they will ever learn. It is therefore crucial that the children are able to see what a huge benefit it is to be competent and fluent in these skills and how

they are used, literally every day, by nearly everybody. With this in mind, children are encouraged from the very beginning, by the example of their teachers, to see reading as a means to not only entertain, but also to find information and develop understanding. As their level of reading and comprehension improves, the children begin to see that it gives them access to a world of stories, information, communication and news that previously had to be interpreted for them by adults. It is particularly important that children see the applications for which writing can be used, as

writing is one of the more difficult skills to master. Therefore, from when children begin to write their first words, they are always asked to write for a purpose, whether it

be a list to remind; story or poem to entertain; a letter, email or note to communicate; a caption to explain; a diary to record; a poster, instructions or report to inform. And today writing on a computer is as important as doing it on paper. Some aspects of mathematics have obvious applications such as weighing and measuring, but it is still important to highlight situations in which they are used in everyday life. Other aspects of mathematics can seem somewhat abstract (such as calculating), so it is important that the children are shown how to apply their knowledge by presenting practical applications for it. The most obvious and often

GIS takes gold in FOBISIA Under 15 games Sports stars from Garden International School (GIS) returned home with gold medals after a hugely successful competition against other British schools in Southeast Asia. GIS, which is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya, sent a team to Traill International School in Bangkok for the FOBISIA Under 15 games. FOBISIA is the Federation of British International Schools in Asia. The boys’ and girls’ teams both came home as swimming champions, while the boys also took

gold for track and field. The girls came third in their track and field contest. After a toughly-fought football tournament, the GIS boys were runners-up and also came second in the basketball competition. The GIS girls’ team finished fourth in their football competition. The results again confirm GIS’s position as a school that produces outstanding young athletes who are capable of competing at the very top levels. used example is to use money and as this is probably the most common use of mathematics in everyday life; it is a good way to show the relevance in the ‘real world’ of the concepts and skills which they are acquiring in the primary classroom. So one of the fundamental questions which primary educators continually ask themselves is, ‘Why are we teaching this and how can we show the children why they need to learn it?’ By doing so, we hope to ensure that what we deliver in the classroom enriches the lives of the children, not only at some distant point in their academic future, but daily throughout their school career. Youth Focus

The Gender Agenda by Matthew Bolton

The data from the 2013 Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests (colloquially known as SATs) for 11-year-old students shows, once again, girls significantly outperforming boys in the reading test. This has been the case every year since the Key Stage 2 tests were introduced in 1995. This gender gap in reading has become a growing cause of concern and debate among parents, teachers and educational academics. However, this isn’t a uniquely British phenomenon. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development organizes a tri-annual analysis of educational standards called PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) which collects data from some 65 countries around the world. The last study, published in 2012, found that the reading results for girls were significantly better than those for boys in all 65 countries! Clearly, therefore, there is something more fundamen-

tal going on here than one country’s specific cultural values or educational methods. So, finding an answer to the question of why boys are less accomplished readers than girls is necessarily going to be a complex process that not only looks at educational and cultural issues but also factors in developmental differences between the genders. This is a field of study best left to academics but, as teachers and parents, we need to consider what we can do to encourage boys to value and enjoy reading. In my opinion the key element is how

Christmas Fun at GIS by Mark Beales Parents, students and staff from Garden International School (GIS) had fun at an actionpacked Christmas Fun Day. The day featured festive songs and dances from Primary students who performed in their houses (cobra, gecko, tiger and eagle) and also Christmas songs from our Secondary students, including a version of the new Band Aid 30 song.

Teachers arranged various activities and games, including a coconut shy, a chance to make your own Christmas card and the opportunity to throw wet sponges at teachers and students! Friends of Garden PTA arranged for some great food and drinks for the event. There was also a raffle, which offered a range of great prizes. Mark Beales is IB coordinator and English teacher at GIS.

young children experience literature and reading. All young children love stories. Even before they have begun to read themselves, if a child has experienced having books read to them in a dramatic and engaging way by adults, they will have already started to associate words and writing with an absorbing and entertaining medium. In this way children can start learning to read with a positive attitude towards books and the words that propel them. However, it is here, at the start of their formal education (in this context I am referring to the British and American systems where

children start compulsory education at the age of 5), that some children, especially boys, can be put off reading. In his book “Why Boys Fail: Saving Our Sons from an Educational System That’s leaving Them Behind,” Richard Whitmire asserts that the recent extra emphasis on literacy in the early years has put boys at a disadvantage. “School reform pushed literacy demands into earlier and earlier grades,” he explained, “and boys are at a developmental disadvantage when it comes to early literacy challenges.”

Something similar has happened in the UK with the introduction of a rigorous synthetic phonics program in the Reception year. There is no doubt that synthetic phonics is an extremely effective method for learning to decode words. Problems can arise, however, when it is the only approach to reading children are introduced to and the skill of decoding words becomes divorced from any genuine experience of reading. This is the stage at which some boys, with their ‘developmental

disadvantage’, may start thinking of reading as a difficult chore and, even worse, begin to see themselves as people who ‘can’t read’ or ‘hate reading’. In my experience, the most productive way of keeping young boys engaged with reading is an approach that mixes phonics with the traditional ‘reading for meaning’ method and, critically, regularly exposes them to stimulating, ageand gender-appropriate literature. Thai racer Stuvik tests GP2 car Following the Formula 1 race at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, the Formula 1, GP2 and GP3 series arranged a multiple-day end-of-season test for up-and-coming drivers to test the larger machinery. Thailand’s Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik tested in the GP2 Series, the first day with Italian team Rapax and the last two days with the French ART team. The Thai driver, being one of the youngest in this field, learnt much from driving the 4-liter V8-powered 620-hp GP2 car, and harvested a large amount of information from the onboard telemetric systems, to allow him to work more on his personal preparation to handle these powerful cars. Stuvik also tested the slightly-less-powered World Series by Renault

3.5-liter cars for two days at Motorland Circuit in Spain with Pons Racing. The WSR and GP2 are the two main recruiting levels for drivers moving to Formula 1. Inherently difficult to drive competitively, the drivers usually need several years of preparation and testing to be able to fight for the top in these cars. Stuvik himself said after completing three grueling days of testing, “This was three very tough days of testing and although I have trained non-stop for this, I struggled a bit on the last day. The cars are extremely physical to drive, with loads up towards 4G in almost every corner and huge acceleration and deceleration capabilities. It is a lot of fun to drive, but our focus both for the WSR and this GP2 test has

been to learn where and how we must improve to be competitive in the series next season. The objective is to win, and to do this we need to learn. Considering that almost all the other drivers here are regular drivers from WSR and GP2, I do feel very much the rookie, but I will come back stronger. I want to thank my sponsors Singha, the Pizza Company and Dacon Inspection Services for giving a Thai kid

a chance to reach this level. It is their enormous support that makes it possible for us to fly the Thai flag high and hear the Thai national anthem at racing circuits around the world.” Having recently won the EuroFormula Open Formula 3 Championship, Stuvik is actively looking for his next step up the ladder towards becoming Thailand’s first Formula 1 driver in modern times.

Thailand hosts the first La Posta Cup The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club grounds in eastern Pattaya were the setting for the La Posta Cup competition, conducted from November 28-30, and held for the first time in Thailand. The La Posta Cup, a perpetual trophy, had its beginnings in Argentina, with the inaugural event taking place in 1973. The trophy was played up to 14-goal standard. Santiago Bachmann, the 36-year-old Thai Polo and Equestrian Club manager and senior resident veterinary surgeon, arranged the tournament, which featured players representing four

competing teams: Adamas, Hong Kong, Maple Leaf, and Paisano. In the first round, held on the 28th, Paisano downed Hong Kong while Maple Leaf defeated

Adamas. The semi-finals took place the next day, with Adamas roaring into the final by downing Paisano while Maple Leaf downed Hong Kong. The final, to be played

between Adamas and Maple Leaf, was delayed due to inclement weather and had been postponed until a date to be fixed, although Santiago said it will take place in December.

Our Community Graduation Ceremony by Derek Franklin At a ceremony which took place on the first Saturday of December, 60 students from the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities received their graduation certificates. On arrival at the school in 2012 the students were offered a variety of courses to study: Information Technology, Electronic Repair, Business English and Informal Education.

After two years of study the students have learned new skills and gained knowledge, but they have also gained confidence and their self-esteem has grown. Students at the school come from all over the Kingdom. One such student was 30-year-old Jim who arrived at the school in 2012 on what looked like a homemade go-kart. Disabled since the age of 2, he is unable to sit upright and although no primary or secondary school would accept him, he managed to attend classes at an informal education center. At the Vocational School he studied Information Technology, successfully graduated and is now employed at a local hospital in his home province

of Chumphon. Almost 3,000 students have graduated from the school since it first opened its doors in 1984. Not only have they gone on to find employment, they are being treated as equals, earning equal salaries and with equal rights.

Four children from the MERCY Pattaya Children’s Home were given a rare opportunity when David Goldsack, principal of Rayong English Programme School in Ban Chang, put them forward for the prestigious Cambridge English examination, after giving them tuition in his own time. If successful, this will give them a much wider choice of careers: academia, medicine, technology, the hospitality industry, etc. – all would benefit from an applicant’s knowledge of English and could give the children a distinct advantage in the future. MERCY Pattaya is grateful for the dedication and commitment shown by David – a fine example of equal educational opportunity.

Community Service and a Birthday Cake by Derek Franklin To honor the 87th birthday of His Majesty the King, 40 students from the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities took time off from their studies to perform community service in the local area behind Big C Extra. In the mid morning heat they swept the small sois which the regular street cleaners seem to forget about, and by the time they finished there was not a plastic bag, cigarette end, food container or dog dropping to be seen. While the students were sweeping the streets, members of the Chefs’ Association of Pattaya City and East Coast were arriving at the school to put together, as they do each year, Pattaya’s largest birthday cake.

Each member chef baked a small square cake at their respective hotels and restaurants, which were then transported with care to the Father Ray Foundation where they were all put together to create one large cake. The finish cake measured one meter across and five

meters in length, filled with cream and decorated with raisins, sprinkles and candied fruits. The waiting children and students were eager for a slice. Father Peter, president of the Father Ray Foundation, was on hand to welcome Poramit, former member

of parliament for Pattaya, who was given the honor of cutting the first slice. A large slice of cake was waiting for the street sweepers on their return to school, and there was one word that was repeated often, ‘aroy’, the local word for delicious.

You & Your Pets

Ringworm threatens dogs, cats and people

by Dr. RJ Peters

Ringworm is not a disease. In fact, it’s not even a worm. Rather, it’s a highly contagious fungus that can spread to other pets and humans alike. Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Check your pet’s skin regularly for signs of ringworm. The condition may be difficult to detect due to the animal’s fur coat, so look carefully for the following symptoms: • Dandruff-like scaling in the depths of the coat • Red lesions on the head, chest, forelegs and the ridge of the back • Scaling, crusting, thickening and reddening of the skin • Circular patches of hair loss (alopecia) on the head, tail or the ridge of the dog or cat’s back. Because this fungal infection can potentially spread over a pet’s body and infect other animals and people, it’s important that you see your vet at once for an accurate diagnosis if you see any skin problem. Your vet may use an ultraviolet light, look at suspect hairs under a microscope, or take

a culture of the affected area. Treatment depends on the severity of the infection. A veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo or ointment and/or oral medications. Once treatment begins, lesions should begin to heal in a matter of weeks. Meanwhile, because ringworm lives on both skin and hair, it can be easily transmitted by loose hair on carpet or furniture. So while your pet is being treated, it’s a good idea to do a thorough cleaning of your home environment to remove any contaminants. • Vacuum any carpet or furniture that your pet has contact with (including underneath beds and couches)

• Wash down surfaces with a good cleaning agent • Restrict your pet to areas of the house that are easy to clean, such as rooms with tile floors. • Avoid contact with the animal until all symptoms have cleared. As with many conditions and diseases, the healthier the animal, the less susceptible it is to infection. Ringworm infestation is much more common and more easily contracted if the animal has a weakness, such as being very young (immune systems may not be fully developed yet), previous or existing problems with fleas or mites (which bite and cause breaks in the skin), long hair (which protects the spores from sunlight which may repel them from attaching), or contact with infected grooming tools used on other animals. This situation is one that requires a good relationship with your veterinarian, because you may be seeing each other often for a while!

Cats for You in Pattaya

Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

Oreo

This small kitten has had a tough start to her little life and has some spinal damage. She can get around well on her own by scooting about on her bottom. Oreo also has to wear nappies so any prospective new owner would have to be prepared to change them on a regular basis, just like any other baby!

Jelly

This fun-loving playful puss has been with us for a while now. She did go to a new home but was picked on by the other resident cat and was brought back. She has now grown into a very loving cat that just loves to get under your feet. She enjoys gardening and in fact likes to help you with whatever you are doing.

Madge

Although she looks a little stern in this photo Madge is one of the loveliest and liveliest cats that we have here. She just loves a good cuddle and would definitely need a home with a garden to play in as one of her favorite pastimes is tearing about on the grass and climbing up the trees.

Yana

You’re probably prepared in case a member of your family gets injured or has a medical problem. But do you know what to do if your pet chokes on a bone or is involved in an accident? This Pattaya Today feature will help answer some common first aid questions related to your pets. Such information could mean the difference between life and death.

Dog Bites

Yana is named after the Russian lady who found her with a broken leg about a year or so ago. Her leg is fully healed now and has a steel pin permanently and very successfully implanted. This friendly cat likes lots of love and will sit on your lap all day, if you have the time that is!

Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers

If another dog bites your pet, get it to a vet or the clinic as soon as possible. Dog bites can pull a lot of hair, debris and bacteria into the wound. If it’s not cleaned out and treated quickly, the wound can become infected.

Going to the Dogs... I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. They fight for honor at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvelous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying. ~George Bird Evans, Troubles with Bird Dogs

If you have to move, there are things to consider. The cat can’t help pack, but his or her needs must be met, too. It’s usually best, if you have the luxury, to wait until you are completely moved into the new place before releasing Fluffy there. And then, it’s helpful to introduce her to one room at a time. That is, keep Fluffy in one room until she is comfortable there, and then let her explore another room, increasing her “territory” one room at a time. Some cats fit in more quickly, and if you are in tune with your kitty, you will know. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets. They include Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com. Her newest book is Our Amazing Dogs.
