What’s Inside:
Few changes in ASEAN Economic Community A
lthough the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is slated to begin in 11 months, it appears that the initial impact will be something of a damp squib. The AEC is essentially a free trade region of 10 Asian countries of which Thailand is a partner and due to commence on December 31, 2015. But many economists say that the real changes are far down the road because of protectionist policies still in force which will continue into the new era. The biggest myth about the AEC is that there will be a free flow of labor across the region. But the whole point is that only highly skilled labor will be able to move – engineers, nurses, doctors, dentists, architects, surveyors and accountants – and even they will have to pass the licensing test of any ASEAN country of which they are not a passport holder. Moreover, any professional intending to work in Thailand must collaborate with a local business and not be independent, yet another reason why the free flow of labor is a myth.
The Thailand Development Research Institute believes that there is no political will to change the regulations any time soon. “Most ASEAN countries, including Thailand, won’t want statutory changes at the beginning. Only Singapore is trying to promote the free flow of skilled labor. Many Thais are afraid they may lose their jobs to foreigners as the service sector opens up, but that won’t happen in the early years.” The Institute adds that there are sound economic reasons for opening up these markets, for example Thailand already has a shortage of nurses, but governments are very reluctant to disadvantage their own populations at this time. Thailand has far to go in preparing its own people for the medium-term impact of the AEC. Little has been done in improving the skills of the workforce or providing better products and services. The common language of the AEC is scheduled to be English, but Thailand has not been active in offering Continued on page 6

Russian duped by street scam
Indian robbed as he chatted
Russian tourist Rinat Safin reported to police that two Arablooking people and a child had stolen the equivalent of 55,000 baht from him after asking to see some Russian money. He said he met the group in Naklua and they said they would be visiting Moscow very soon. However, they had no idea what Russian money looked like and solicited the favor to see some of his. But when Safin later counted his cash, he discovered he was very short indeed. The distressed tourist said he would report the scam to his embassy in order that some action might possibly be taken.
Robber carried away room safe
Two ladyboys escaped on a motorbike after relieving an Indian tourist of 4,040 baht in front of the Grand Sole’ hotel. However, prompt police action led to their capture and arrest following the discovery of 4,040 baht in one of the katoey’s shoulder bags. They admitted they were cruising around looking for victims with a bulge in their pockets, indicating a thick wallet. They pretended to chat up the Indian tourists, Sandeep Dhawan and Rajnish Gupta, as they were talking to a group of friends. Quick as a flash, one of the scam artists had his hand in the victim’s trouser pocket.
A Kuwaiti couple returned from a bar to their apartment in Pratumnak Road, South Pattaya, only to discover that a criminal had visited the premises, broken the lock to their door and managed to drag away the metal safe to an unknown destination. The safe contained valuables and cash worth about 100,000 baht. Mohanna Anhajari, 39, said he and his wife had been in Pattaya for just two days. Police said they were checking the room in question for fingerprints and were also examining some CCTV footage.
Not a snatcher after all
Locals in the South Pattaya road rushed to intervene after they noticed a man and a woman arguing and the male apparently snatching the female’s necklace. The police were soon on the scene, but it was all a mistake. The couple knew each other and was simply having a lovers’ tiff in which the necklace accidentally broke. There was no intention to steal and the police, satisfied by the woman’s confirmation, went away empty-handed.
Factory damaged in Rayong fire A serious conflagration damaged a Rayong tire factory with losses of almost 1.5 million baht. A spokesman for the Hemaraj industrial estate said about half the warehouses were destroyed in one of China’s largest export companies for this type of commodity. Over 100 fire trucks attended the blaze and some workers suffered smoke inhalation prior to evacuation. Linglong International Tire opened in 2012 and the Rayong venture was the company’s first factory outside the Chinese mainland. Investigators said the cause of the fire might take some time to determine and smoke prevented early detective work. However, an electrical fault is initially suspected.
Stepfather raped 15-year-old daughter
A man with a gun stole 200,000 baht from the drawers of a money exchange facility on Third Road after waiting for the owner to turn up. Suwat Ratchatawattanakul told police he was about to enter the premises when a man dressed in black and wearing a helmet ordered him to cooperate or to lose his life. Suwat said he was absolutely sure the brazen thief was not of Thai nationality as he spoke with a foreign twang before escaping on a motorbike. Police later identified the armed man and arrested 27-yearold Ayder Bezaziyev from Ukraine. The suspect confessed his crime and told police he had a debt to pay off and needed to buy an air ticket back home.
Cambodian man murdered
Man found dead in shed
A member of staff of a condominium on Third Road was checking an outdoor shed when he discovered the corpse of a Thai man who had been dead for several hours. His name was reported as Eak, around 40, but nobody has yet been able to identify him. It is believed he collected garbage and sold some of it to make a meager living. Beside the dead body there was a bloodstained sheet and a brazier which police suspect was linked to the mysterious fatality. A friend of the dead man, Samruay, was being interviewed by police but without a definite result so far. A witness, Don, said he had seen Eak earlier in the day and noticed he had a head injury. However Don had been assured it was nothing serious and had departed. Police believe the murder may have been linked to alcohol.
Money exchange robbery suspect arrested
Banglamung police arrested Poobert Arrak, 52, for raping a child under 15. An investigation showed that he was a tennis teacher from Phang Nga as well as a part-time fortune teller, but he denied raping his stepdaughter and claimed he was studying Dharma. The mother of the female victim said Poobert had lived in the same house for two years. She added that she initially suspected nothing as he seemed to be a gentle man who talked about meditation and avoided bad practices. However, she changed her mind when her daughter complained about sexual violence over a three-month period. Poobert had apparently warned the child not to say anything or he would stop paying her school fees. This too was denied by the accused man who will eventually get his day in court.
Following the death of a Cambodian worker in a Naklua restaurant, killed by having his throat cut, police found a knife and a hammer as pertinent evidence. The restaurant manager Paitoon told police he had 10 Cambodian workers and that the dead man, John, was a table waiter. Following the discovery of the body, Paitoon said that two other Cambodian staff had disappeared, throwing considerable suspicion on themselves, especially as they slept in the same room. Although attempts had been made to immobilize the CCTV, there was relevant footage on one machine which seemed to show the two Cambodian suspects leaving the premises. Finding them won’t be easy as only their nicknames are known – Bud and Pao – but the best information has been circulated to Thai Immigration Police to apprehend them if they attempt to cross the border back to their country of origin.

News Money Expo attracts the crowds
Held at the Royal Cliff’s PEACH convention center, the February 2015 Money Expo Pattaya Meet was an opportunity for banks and financial-sector institutions to promote their products, including credit cards, life insurance, property loans, investment opportunities, etc. The timing was in accord with the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, a free trade
zone of 10 nations which formally begins at the beginning of next year. The minister of finance in the current government, Sommai Phasee, was the guest of honor for the fifth such exhibition to be held in the Eastern Seaboard resort. Over 50 institutions were represented and the total number of visitors was said to exceed 20,000 over a three-day period.

News Beggar crackdown underway More cash needed for promotions Pattaya city hall has announced a new campaign to reduce the number of begging transients in Chonburi province. Somdet Naenudorn, head of Chonburi Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, said the problem was not only the inconvenience caused to tourists by Thais and other Asian nationals demanding money for a meal but the allied issue of pestering visitors with offers to sell flowers and trinkets. There are even beggars who play loud music, often out-of-tune, in the hope of cash donations
to make them depart more quickly. The new campaign will concentrate on the areas near Tukcom Pattaya, Chaimongkol market and
Beach Road. Child beggars will be sent to an orphanage, but it is not altogether clear what will happen to adult offenders.
Another building collapses A hotel under construction partly collapsed behind Big C, North Pattaya, and three Cambodian laborers were injured, but not too seriously. Police and rescue services rushed to the scene as did Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh. The Vorrakit Construction Company explained that some scaffolding fell over as it could not bear the weight. Construction at the site will now cease for a while as checks are made on the edifice and revised plans are drawn up to complete the assignment.
The tourism and sports committee of the local authority has complained that some tourist-related events, such as sports and the recent Pattaya Colour Run, would have been better if Pattaya city had donated cash to assist.
Ornwara Kornpin, from the Pattaya tourism promotion office, said international events were expensive to organize and needed a cash injection. But Sinchai Wattanasatsaton, president of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association,
said he was always glad to seek funds, if approached in good time. There was also a discussion about the extent to which the traffic dislocation caused by the Sukhumvit underpass might affect visitor numbers of the next three years.
Dengue fever still a priority
An anti-dengue seminar was held at Banglamung School to inform people about the extent locally of this most dangerous mosquito-borne disease. In the first half of last month, there
were 25 patients at Banglamung Hospital and one died of the disease. The general advice is to destroy the breeding grounds of mosquitoes near domestic dwellings, including any
receptacles holding still water, and to use sprays and netting inside the house. Private sector hospitals have also reported that the incidence of dengue fever is again on the rise.

News Few changes in ASEAN Economic Community language courses outside of the tourist industry. Although it is likely that the AEC will encourage more crossborder visits by tourists, the vast majority will still need a work permit, as in the past, if they wish to take up employment. Some believe that the May 2014 military coup in Thailand has caused AEC reforms to be placed
on the back burner as the government currently has other preoccupations. As regards Thai professionals who could work abroad, for example nurses and doctors, they do not necessarily want to take up employment in other ASEAN countries. They may prefer the United States for example or Canada or countries of
the European Union where salaries are very much higher than in most of Asia. Many observers are of the view that the shortage of professionals in ASEAN countries has much to do with the wish to practice their profession outside of the Southeast Asian region. Nor will the advent of ASEAN automatically boost
Continued from page 1 non-ASEAN tourism, at any rate in the early years. Thus all foreigners from the United States or Europe will still need visas for most ASEAN countries, for example Cambodia or Laos or Myanmar, and long stayers will also need them for Thailand as now. “In other words, the advent of the AEC does not in itself change
More pumps needed Loud party provokes complaint to avoid flooding
Although no final decision has been made by the local authority, Pattaya sanitation engineers are recommending that three more pumps should be purchased in preparation for the onset of the rainy season. They would supplement the three already bought to offset the threat in the 2013 rainy season. Engineers said the flooding problems were most apparent in Naklua where polluted and clogged canals were a separate problem. In Soi Khao Talo the proposed pump would work alongside a new drainage trench, while in Jomtien a pump will be required in the Rompho Complex area which is a notorious district for flooding during a downpour.
The Banglamung district chief was informed by locals that a beach club in Jomtien was holding very noisy parties indeed far into the night. One of the consequences was that people could not sleep properly or even at all. Police eventually visited the place and found a carnival atmosphere round the swimming pool. An illegal substance was found under a cushion but none of the guests who were urine-tested were found to have taken drugs. However, there was evidence of the use of alcohol which had not been registered for the proper tax and this led to the arrest of the club owner. Neighbors said they were very happy that the partying now seemed to have ceased.
immigration policies in any way,” comments the Institute, “although there has been some progress in offering joint visas for Thailand and Cambodia.” Additionally, the existence of ASEAN will not affect at all the policies worldwide affecting visa regulations for Thais and other ASEAN nationals travelling abroad. For example, Thais wishing to visit the US, the UK and Australia will still face the same visa bureaucracies as now.
The AEC is all about increased competition and liberalization in the 10-member countries. But that will take years to work out across the region and voluntary codes will need to become statutory ones in lengthy parliamentary processes in each individual country. For the moment, it appears that the expectation that matters will change immediately and dramatically from December 31, 2015 is overblown hype.
Man committed suicide after murder
Two people were found dead at the Kanyanat Apartment in Naklua after a violent incident. Surachai Umnuay, 38, was found with a gunshot wound in the head as was Waramporn Janthapan, aged 38. Friends told investigators that the man worked in a five-star hotel while the woman was a dental assistant. Wantana Sornsomnuek, a friend of the dead woman, said she had visited the apartment after receiving a phone call that a serious argument was in progress. She was unable to gain access to the room but clearly heard two shots ring out. The owner of the apartment broke open a window to gain entry and called the police. After interviewing neighbors, they believe that Surachai wanted to apologize to his lady friend for some behavioral lapse but then shot both of them when his apology was not accepted.

News Tunnel project moves forward Repairs everywhere The Pattaya beach refill and drainage pipe improvement, which will dig up part of Walking Street, is scheduled to start in March. Meanwhile the new Sukhumvit tunnel project is getting underway with major traffic changes and one-way systems now beyond the planning stage. For expats and others, getting through the next three years won’t be easy. Let’s hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel. No more bribes The new Pattaya police chief, Police Colonel Sukthat Pumpunmuang, has asked for a crackdown on the most common tourist-related crimes in the city, namely bag snatching and drugging in the furtherance of theft. He has also told officers, especially in the traffic division, to stop taking bribes. The odd thing is that many drivers would like to pay on-the-spot fines, without a receipt, but have been told to pay at the police station. All prim and proper. Baht mystery In recent months the Australian dollar has slumped from 29 baht to 25 and the pound from 52 baht to barely 48 on some days. Can anyone explain why? We are told that the Thai economy is in the doldrums and government spokesmen seem forever to be revising their predictions downwards. The American dollar is riding high at 32+ baht, but the Euro is sinking. At this rate, one dollar will equal one euro if the trend continues. Busy in Jomtien The Akvavit restaurant, near Soi 3 on Jomtien Beach Road, is doing well with its first-class Scandinavian and Thai menu. The food is good, service prompt and the staff pleasant and employed in sufficient numbers to cope with an influx of appetites. Prices are fair for a first-class eatery and there are a number of specials or discounts in the afternoon for beach tourists returning to their hotel.
Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome met with representatives of the Napha Construction Company to sign a memorandum of understanding about the upcoming Central Pattaya Road traffic project. The tunnel will have four lanes, back and forth, with a total length of 1.9 kilometers as well as CCTV, a ventilation facility, water drainage technology and a fire protection hi-tech system. The road on top of the tunnel will be a small park decorated with dolphin images and colored lights. The actual project began on January 5 and the expected timeframe for completion is 27 months at a total cost of 800 million baht. Traffic diversions in East Pattaya, including Siam Country Club and Soi Nern Plubwan, are already in operation.
Isan football is anti-drugs The Isan Association hosted the third Isan Football Competition at Pattaya City School Number 7 in order to illustrate to youngsters the dangers associated with drug taking. Part of the income raised at the match was used to improve the football ground perimeter.
Officials confer about crimes Ba n g l a m u n g d i s t r i c t c h i e f C h a k o r n Kanjanawatta presided over a conference of civil servants to witness the progress made in the suppression of crime. He explained that the local police were now very busy looking for illegal weapons, catching bag snatchers and controlling prostitution and human trafficking. It was also noted that the current government’s aim was to root out corruption wherever it raised its ugly head.
Convenience store robbed
Diversified Simon’s Many people believe that Simon’s fish and chips have no equal, the secret of the chips being in the potatoes while the fish is coated with that crispy beer batter. But now Simon’s has introduced a much wider range of Thai food too, which devotees say is certainly up to the mark. Simons is located not far from Jomtien beach, vaguely opposite the Hanuman statue. Good movie It’s in the cinemas right now, not to mention available on the street (ahem!), but The Imitation Game is well worth a viewing. It tells the story of gay computer wizard Alan Turing who helped crack the Nazi communication codes in World War II. Of course, it is oversimplified – the Germans produced a new version of Enigma after realizing the first one had been breached – but it’s a convincing on-screen drama. The sex side is played down by the way. Passport reminder When you apply for a British passport in Bangkok, don’t forget to keep the receipt number which staff at The Trendy Office give you. This is because you need to quote the receipt number if you have need to phone the international helpline number to see how your application is proceeding in UK. Incidentally, the waiting time for British passports now seems to be down to about one month compared with three or four months last year. Cremation query A reader asks for an estimate of how much a cremation costs here in Pattaya. How long is a piece of string? Depends which temple you choose and how much ceremony you (or your loved ones) want. The most expensive temple is Chaimongkol in the South Pattaya Road but that venue has more facilities than the others. The cheaper crematoriums are out of town. Costs thus vary from 20,000 baht to 60,000++. Most embassies keep a list of morticians who can help you decide. Opinions expressed in this column are the author’s alone and do not necessarily represent those of Pattaya Today’s management.
Two thieves carrying a gun visited a Family Mart in Soi Chaiyaporn Vidhi and escaped on a motorbike with 3,500 baht of stolen funds. Staff said that one of the culprits was wearing a black coat and hat and was not easily recognized. Police said the CCTV footage showed the faces of both the
unwelcome customers and promised to keep their eyes and ears open. Indeed, the two thieves were later arrested with the gun, getaway motorbike, and a radio communication which was found to be stolen from a security guard in a Pattaya condominium prior to the theft.
Nakedness shocks the locals
Following the appearance on the internet of a nude woman at a sushi restaurant in Pattaya, there was an explosion of interest and many comments made by both gawpers and prurient viewers. Some people believed that a nude woman appearing in this way caused shock about declining moral standards and gave excuses to
foreigners to look down on Thai values. But others posted on chatlines that this was all much ado about nothing. Reporters went to the restaurant in Soi Khopai, South Pattaya, to check what the owners thought, but the visit was in vain. The restaurant was closed. However, police later found out that the restaurant was run by an Australian guy
called Jason, but he apparently turned up to his business premises but rarely. Investigators said the restaurant was operating illegally, had no license to sell alcohol and was allowing an indecent display. It was also clarified that the nude woman with sushi distributed liberally on her naked body was not a member of staff.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
PATTAYA MARRIOT RESORT & SPA Launch their Saturday night Seafood Extravaganza Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa is a 5-star hotel located in the heart of the city centre but with its lush tropical gardens and panoramic views over the beach it offers both urban entertainment and idyllic tranquility in one of the most beautiful locations in the area. The Sala Rim Nam is the privileged area reserved for special private and promotion events held at the resort and it is here that their Saturday night seafood barbeque is held weekly. Designed to resemble a Thai rustic village with its cluster of Thai pavilions nested beside the lotus pond it is a most charming setting. Mick and I were invited recently to experience this new Saturday night seafood extravaganza (B. 1,499 ++) and were certainly impressed not only with the quantity of items on offer but the superb quality. Walk through the lobby and just follow the mouthwatering BBQ aromas pervading through the garden until you reach the picturesque Sala Rim Nam restaurant. The first live cooking station you will come across is the luxurious display of Canadian lobsters. These world-
class crustaceans are in fact Little Cranberry lobsters from the rugged coastline of Mount Desert Island in Down East Maine. They are wild caught and sustainably harvested and have the enviable reputation of being one of the sweetest and most desirable of all lobsters. Where else to start our pageant of dishes than here; the lobsters were cooked, flambéed with Cognac before being lightly doused with a velvety cream sauce. They were exquisite; sweet, succulent and moistly delicious making Little Cranberry top of our lists for this luxury shellfish item. The next station adjoining the lobsters is the seafood BBQ area. Here an astonishing array of glistening shellfish of every description rest on their icy bed awaiting your selection. Gleaming red salmon, sea bass and bright fresh tuna will also vie for your attention. We picked giant prawns, rock lobster, blue crabs, mussels and tuna for chef to throw on the barbie while we collected our assortment of spicy, BBQ and tartar sauces to accompany them. The smells were wonderful and the air heavy with
smoking seafood and intense aromas. Meat lovers are also well served with the first rate range of items: beef rib eye, beef strip loin, lamb rack, pork loin and lamb, chicken, pork and beef skewers available to be cooked to your exact specification. Side dishes of baked potatoes with sour cream, bacon and chopped spring onions were a hearty accompaniment while Mick particularly enjoyed the buttery corn on the cob. The salad bar would make for an interesting starter or adjunct to your main course. A rich creamy potato salad was particularly good as was the Greek salad and the spicy minced chicken salad. your own salad is another option choosing from the grated carrot and white cabbage, sliced red and green peppers, tomato, cucumber, diced pineapple, beetroot, red beans and salty rich anchovies. Moving on to the dessert table is a must. The Marriott’s in-house patisserie produces the most beautiful creative pastries and confections. They all looked truly stunning with the elegant shot glasses offering up more tempting confections. Carved seasonal fruits and the live station offering fruit flambé and crepes with homemade ice cream was also a very popular area.
We enjoyed a great evening here listening to the excellent duo whilst tucking into some of the best seafood available. Sala Rim Nam is a wonderful destination and not one that is open every day, so take advantage of the Saturday seafood BBQ and enjoy the tropical surroundings which can be enjoyed to the full while we enjoy our cool, dry season here in Pattaya.

Le St. Trop’ Foie gras, French snails, Beef Massaman & Red Crab Curry all Under One Roof Philippe Harlee veteran chef/ restaurateur has many notches on his culinary belt gained from his experience working in Paris and the Provencal town of St. Tropez much loved by the trendy glitterati. He has now relocated to Pattaya and has set up his latest enterprise in Ratanakorn Market next to the Colosseum on Thepprasit Road, already the site for a handful of interesting eateries. Mick and I were intrigued to discover what this new bistro had to offer. Situated towards the back of the market on the left-hand side, its rustic appearance welcomes with defused lighting and modern tableware. Front of house is the charming Khun A who choreographs the service effectively while Philippe is on

hand to chat and spread his Gallic charm. Entente cordiale is alive and well in this French-Thai restaurant offering classic dishes from both countries with some interesting culinary synthesis to give Le St. Trop’ its signature twists. House white wine by the glass is B.130 and with this in hand we quietly perused the menu. A 50 cl carafe is B.420 plus there is a decent selection of red, white and rose wines by the bottle. Starters from the Francais selection include quintessential plates of snails, foie gras served with a confiture of figs (B.420), chicken liver terrine (B.190) and our choices, carpaccio of smoked salmon and poached eggs with a sea urchin sauce at B.180. A generous plate of the finely sliced salmon
accompanied by a garden of salad was well received by Mick while I enjoyed the eggs, lightly poached and coated with its briny emulsion. Main courses, again, reflect the traditional plates of France covering bouillabaisse, endives with a ham gratin, beef tartar or served with a pepper or blue cheese sauce, sea food brochettes or blanquette de veau. We plumped for scallops in a tarragon cream and boeuf bourguignon (B280). The scallops were large and fleshy with coral still intact and came accompanied by a tarragon sauce (did I detect a touch of coconut cream?) and a serving of rice which worked very well indeed. Sautéed, boiled, and fried potatoes, broccoli and spaghetti are the other alternative accompaniments. The Thai menu presents over 50 dishes with prices from only B.100. Crab cakes, fresh spring rolls, mixed prawn and vegetable tempura and seafood satay stand out from the starters before segueing into hot and sour soup with prawn, clear soup with seaweed and soft tofu plus a house special, seafood galingale
in coconut milk soup. Moving on the house recipe mussel salad took our eye as did the spicy, crispy prawn and mango salad. Beef massaman is one of chef’s signature dishes and accompanied by mashed potatoes is another example of the fusion twist which Le St. Trop’ delivers. Other house specialities include grilled tiger prawn with black pepper, red curry of crab meat, beef curry served with paratha and deep-fried fish fillet with a three-flavoured sweet, sour, chili flavour. Desserts, including a cheese platter, conclude the menu with the likes of hot chocolate cake, poire belle Helene, banana flambé and lemon sherbet with vodka providing the finishing touches. This friendly bistro is a welcome new comer to the neighbourhood and we wish Le St. Trop’ every success for the coming year. NNC Sunscreen Translucent foundation for all skin types The sun is your skin’s best friend and worst enemy. Without proper protection, the sun’s ultraviolet A (longwave) and ultraviolet B (shortwave) rays can harm your skin. Why is it important to protect your skin from UVA and UVB? by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen UVA and UVB from the sun play an important role in conditions such as photoaging, skin darkening, and freckles. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply (up to dermis layer) compared to UVB (epidermis layer). Although UVA is less intense than UVB, most of us are exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime and it can cause premature skin aging. UVB is responsible for skin darkening and plays a key role in the development of skin cancer. That’s why you need sunscreen that protects you from these sunrays. NNC Sunscreen NNC Sunscreen is a daily skin care and sun protection effective against UV rays. The foundation is suitable for all skin types and is made up of ingredients that help protect the skin from UVA and UVB (60 times more effective than usual). The sunscreen cream is smooth, waterproof, and non-greasy. It also does not block skin pores and leaves no white trace on your face.
NNC Sunscreen should be applied on your face 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. NNC Sunscreen is available at Nicha Clinic.

The Witching Hour Physicians call morning time “the witching hour” for heart attacks because the mornings are when the majority of heart attacks are suffered. Stress hormones, such as cortisol, peak early in the day. Additionally, after sleeping for several hours, people are partially dehydrated, so blood generally is thicker and it is harder for the heart to pump.
For more information, please contact Devarana Spa at Dusit Thani Pattaya on 038 371 044 or pattaya@devaranaspa.com.
Got Eczema? If you suffer from red, scaly, dry patches of skin that are extremely itchy, you may have eczema. Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is an allergy-related skin condition common in young adults, children and infants. Simple measures can often help to minimize symptoms and provide relief. You might try eliminating milk and milk products from your diet, as well as foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (which you should eliminate in any case), commonly found in snack foods and baked goods, and trans-fatty acids (margarine, vegetable shortening). Give these changes some time and see if they help.

BMW X3 AWD Off-Roading at Thai Polo & Equestrian Club xDrive Agility, Diesel Torque and All-Wheel Drive Traction
The life of a time-traveling temporal agent. On his final assignment, he must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.
Pattaya Today Automotive reports about a full day of dusty down and dirty off-roading putting the luxurious BMW Sports Activity Vehicle X3 xDrive20d to the test. I am in Chonburi at the über posh Thai Polo and Equestrian Club which sits on 250 hectares of fine, verdant breezy piece of land with a mountain backdrop. As we arrive I see palm trees, handsome thoroughbred horses, paddocks and stables. Next to the immaculate world-class polo pitch a thatched-roof clubhouse. So, this is where Thai and international high-net-worth individuals play their noble game: polo – a sort of croquet on horseback. Not my cup of tea. I am complete cricket and croquet idiot and a hopeless horseman, or equestrian. (One horse bit me. Another threw me off as I tried to gallop, cowboy style). Here I am together with selected Bangkok motoring hacks away from tarmacked roads, traffic jams to experience off-road driving in a BMW X3 xDrive All-Wheel Drive all day. By the way, AWD is not four-wheel drive! AWD has no high and low gear shifter but has all the benefits of four-wheel drive. All the new X3 models come with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive technology which utilizes a fulltime four-wheel drive system at a 40:60 split. The xDrive is regulated by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and uses information from the latter system’s sensors to monitor road conditions and optimize DSC traction. Before the test drive a tasty light snack, premium Illy coffee and a short audiovisual briefing by the skilled BMW xDrive off-road instructor team. All set to go: “Gentleman start your engines”... Outside ready for us four brand-new shining BMW X3’s and one BMW X5. On the field, BMW flags flying. First station: the skid plate. Brake and traction test followed by a tricky, fourwheel balancing act, traction control again. Next, a medium-steep hill climb. Up and down. Here the approach angle and departure angles are crucial in order to avoid undercarriage damage. No brakes when coming down the hill. BMW’s Hill Descent Control works wonders.
Now, the side slope. Traversing the hill. The vehicle tilts at about 18 degrees angle. Fear of tipping over. Sideways. Sure! The secret here is steady speed. Not more than 1,000 rpm. Keep the line. BMW X3’s advanced computer system takes care of the rest. Break time: Cold towels and refreshments. Change of vehicles and drivers. Station number three, a football-sized field. Dirt and sand. Red pylons mark the track laid out like a number “8”. First lap. Slow turns. Get to know the track. Second lap. Full throttle! No brakes. Power sliding, sideways. Adrenaline pumping. Dust and sand flying. Here the torque of the powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel AWD xDrive puts a big smile on all the drivers’ faces. After a delicious al fresco buffet luncheon, the off-road track is waiting. Authentic off-roading. A 2 km course near a small mountain with all possible obstacles; boulders; gravel; a modified log bridge; water wading and steep natural hills. First a real big hill steep ascent. Full throttle. The X3 climbs like a mountain goat. Stop and descend. Up on the hill my instructor tells me to take my foot off the brake as we move down the steep incline, circa 65 percent gradient. “Trust the xDrive technology and the vehicle will bring you down safely at a 7 km/h crawling speed,” says Khun Peerasak. “No brakes, please!” he adds. I answer, “Yes,” as I reluctantly move my foot off the brake pedal. The descent is roller-coaster-steep. But the going down is smooth and controlled. Hands on the
wheel and feet off the pedals. Bravo BMW X3 xDrive! Without Hill Descent Control, you could fry your brakes and end up – God knows where! Final station after the bumpy, slippery boulders and the river crossing wading. Wading in muddy water requires steady speed and sensitive use of the gas pedal. No brake. Then the last test. High-speed braking. Full acceleration on a long stretch of dirt road lined with trees. Slam on the brake pedal with full force! The AWD stopping power is immediate and impressive. Straight line, no skidding. This is bimmer’s dynamic brake control. Cool. Safely we return to the clubhouse. A post event talk and Q&A follows. Experiences and impressions exchanged. Photo opportunity and Khun Krisda Utamote, director of Corporate Communications of BMW Group Thailand, his team, the BMW offroad instructors and Carl Byoir PR – all receive a big hand. It’s been long day. An Xciting, Xtraordinary X3 Xdrive Xperience! PS. Going off-road remember: Steady speed, light on the throttle. Read the terrain. Keep the line. And downhill? Do not brake, provided your vehicle has Hill Descent Control. Greg’s is top of the range by Barry Kenyon
“You can’t do better than Greg’s Kitchen for excellent quality English and international dishes,” is the refrain of many a hungry eater on internet. But the new location on Naklua Road, diagonally opposite the Crystal Palace Hotel, has the slightly different name of Mr Greg’s Café Diner. Greg Sulis, who has more than 30 years in the catering business as well as the benefit of a hardworking Thai wife and teenage son, says that the name change, though brought about by a technical change in the company licence, hints at a new clientele.
“We are now aiming for a truly international customer base, including Thais and an expanded list of tasty Thai dishes, as there are lots of European and Russian expats living in the Naklua area,” explains Greg. He adds that although the menu has many choices for full meals, there is a demand for a place that offers excellent coffee with a snack or a cake. Opening hours are currently 8 am to 11 pm every day to look after the needs of the diverse catchment of locals and tourists. Greg first visited Thailand on vacation back in 1985 and began
working as a chef in Pattaya at The Sportsman’s Inn, Soi 6, in 1992. He opened the first Greg’s Kitchen on Second Road in 1997 and lasted there for nearly 16 years. Initially, he catered for the British expat and tourist market but soon found his appeal was much broader. In 2012 he moved Greg’s Kitchen to the entertainment zone known as the Drinking Street, opposite the Tiffany Show in North Pattaya, where new markets again appeared, notably in the form of popular take-out meals and snacks. Greg’s is top of the range But when the owner of the complex in which Greg’s Kitchen was based decided to raise very substantially the key money and the rent, Greg and his family decided it was time for a move. So the result is Mr Greg’s Café Diner, a compact single unit on Naklua Road where separate upstairs accommodation provides a comfortable home for the Sulis
family. Prices have been reduced to take account of the smaller running costs, but basically the original Greg’s Kitchen still shines through. Greg’s English-style, allday Big Breakfast at 185 baht still reigns supreme for the early riser, although now complemented by the whopper Breakfast Panini at 150 baht, filled with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and
mushrooms. You can still find too lots of old favourites such as steak and kidney pie, fish and chips and top-quality Sunday roasts. There are also door-stopper, fresh sandwiches with a variety of fillings, plus coleslaw and pickle, for a remarkably good value 120 baht. The delicious bread, by the way, is made by a local baker. To represent the wider clientele
now present in the greater Pattaya conurbation, the menu has a number of new items. There are jacket potatoes, lamb samosas, pea and ham soup, chicken schnitzel and more Indian curry choices. The dessert list has been expanded too with apple strudel with ice cream now a frontrunner along with dark chocolate and orange tart, blueberry cheesecake and a particularly succulent apple crumble. Incidentally, the most expensive item on the menu is peppered steak NZ with all the trimmings for a surprisingly fair 340 baht. There’s also a good choice of pizzas which,
Hotel sales in Asia-Pacific forecast to grow 15 percent in 2015 by
JLL’s hospitality experts project that global hotel transaction volumes will reach an eight-year high of between US$65 to US$68 billion in 2015, representing a 15 percent increase over 2014 volumes. JLL’s forecast is based on the firm’s 2015 Hotel Investment Outlook, a forwardlooking, global analysis that tracks key factors affecting the hotel investment market. The key drivers of hotel transaction activity globally in 2015 include: strong demand fundamentals, increased liquidity in the debt markets, record levels of single-asset trades, increased portfolio activity in secondary markets and a swell in off-shore capital. In Asia-Pacific JLL also anticipates a transaction volume increase of 15 percent, which would mean around US$8.5 billion of transactions. There is a growing interest in Japan, in particular for portfolio deals in the country, and a steady confidence in Australia. Indonesia will be a favoured market driven in part by currency plays, and liquidity in China is set to rise as well as policy
around outbound capital has been eased and focus increases on crossborder investment. 2015: China’s overseas ambition United States-based private equity funds and Middle East investors are expected to remain among the top exporters of outbound capital. It is the Chinese, however, who will lead the pack in terms of year-overyear increases in capital deployed. Chinese outbound capital experienced unprecedented growth in 2014 driven by the strength of China’s growing economy and appreciating currency. Towards the end of last year China’s Ministry of Commerce relaxed policy restrictions on big-ticket foreign investments and simultaneously loosened the approval process for overseas purchases. This adjustment allows Chinese investors to more easily access key global markets such as New York, San Francisco, London, Paris and Sydney. JLL expects Chinese outbound capital to account for US$5 billion in 2015, a five-fold
increase on 2014. This places Chinese investors among the ranks of top exporters such as the United States and the Middle East; just a few years ago China did not feature in the top ten list. Thailand: Hotel investment activity expected to remain strong in 2015 Mike Batchelor, managing director – Investment Sales, Hotels and Hospitality Group at JLL, said, “Despite a series of political unrests and upheavals, Thailand has remained attractive as a hotel investment destination. This is reflected by strong investment activity recorded in recent years with transactional volume reaching over US$330 million in 2013 and 2014. As the political situation across the country has stabilized, we expect investment activity in Thailand to remain robust in 2015. "In addition, while wellcapitalised domestic investors will continue to dominate the hotel investment market, regional investors are likely to be more actively involved this year.”
surprisingly perhaps, can’t be bought anywhere else on that particular stretch of Naklua Road. For those on a slimming regime, there’s a wide variety of salads and several of the Thai dishes are on the low side as regards calories. Nonetheless, one has a sneaking suspicion that many dieters take the day off when contemplating the tempting menu items at Greg’s. It is number one in its field. To quote another internet fan, “I went there on the first day of my holiday and ended up having lunch or dinner for the next fortnight”. Sounds about right.
Phuket and Koh Samui named best destinations for newlyweds and lovers
Patong Beach Thailand’s reputation as one of the world’s most romantic destinations was further enhanced recently when two top travel and lifestyle publications voted the islands of Phuket and Samui as among the world’s most romantic destinations and perfect honeymoon settings. Just short of Valentine’s Day, the highly-respected travel website, Fordors. com named Phuket as one of the world’s Best Honeymoon Destinations for 2015, while VeryFirstTo.com, a luxury retail site that caters for wealthy tourists, rated the Southern Thai island of Samui as one of the top ten romantic destinations in the world, alongside cities; such as Paris and Venice. Fordors.com praised Phuket as a honeymoon destination, citing its endless soft white sandy beaches, electric blue waters and the world’s best sunsets. Also singled out was the fine dining the island can boast as well as temples, fivestar resorts and nearby excursions. Other honeymoon destinations featured in the Fordor list included Milan, Las Vegas and St. Barts.
© Tourism Authority of Thailand In the Thai Gulf, the island of Samui was rated highly as a romantic destination by 581 members of VeryFirstTo.com. The survey asked “which is the most romantic destination in the world?” to establish which destinations should appear in the Valentine’s holiday organized in partnership with tour company Hurlingham Travel. Paris, Venice and St. Moritz were cited, with Samui being chosen for its friendly island atmosphere, unique culture and fine dining. TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “It’s wonderful that Thailand’s loveliest islands are being recognized as romantic hotspots just in time for Valentine’s Day. But Thailand is a romantic destination for couples and honeymooners all year round. Phuket and Samui are known for their lovely beaches, stunning scenery, warm sea, ever-friendly people and range of fun activities to enjoy, as well as being home to some of the finest hotels in Asia: everything a couple in love could ask for.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by Magna Carta Law Office
Last Will and Testament in Thailand What is a Thailand Last Will and Testament? A Last Will and Testament is a declaration of intent concerning dispositions of assets or other matters which shall take effect, according to law after the demise of the testator. The document will detail your assets in Thailand, such as property, bank accounts, vehicle, and personal valuable items, designating who shall inherit and control them according to your wish to prevent unnecessary complications and quarrels between family members. What happens to my assets in Thailand if I don’t have a Last Will and Testament? In Thailand, when a person dies without a Last Will and Testament, the intestate’s assets must be distributed in accordance with the law. As stipulated in The Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand. Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order: 1. descendants 2. parents 3. brothers and sisters of full blood 4. brothers and sisters of half blood 5. grandfathers and grandmothers 6. uncles and aunts The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights on a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (Sin Somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the rest will be distributed accordingly. What are the documents that I need to prepare for my Last Will and Testament? • Copy of identification cards (Passport/National ID Card) of the testator • Copy of identification cards (Passport/National ID Card), home address, telephone number and email address of the beneficiaries and executor • Copy of documents pertaining to your assets a) land, house or condominium – copy of Title Deed, Sale and Purchase Agreement, and House Book b) business/company – copy of Company Registration Papers
c) vehicle – copy of Motor Vehicle Registration Book d) bank account – copy of bank book account information page e) list, description and photos of other personal valuable items • Possible funeral requirements What should I consider when selecting an executor for my will? Overall, the executor will administer your estate and make sure that everything is done according to the terms of your will. Appointing a trusted executor is an important decision that needs thorough consideration. The responsibilities of an executor include making sure all assets are accounted for, all existing debts and tax obligations are paid, and that remaining assets are distributed to the correct beneficiaries in accordance to your will. Most individuals tend to choose family members or other close friends or relatives to act as an executor, it is important that he is someone you can completely trust. If you don’t have a friend or a family member with the necessary expertise, consider hiring a lawyer, accountant or similar type of professional to act as your executor.
I already have my Last Will and Testament in my home country; do I need a different will for my assets in Thailand? Different jurisdictions usually require different formalities for the wills. Having a will drafted in your home country to cover all your assets in Thailand may be troublesome to your family, especially in the event that the will might be invalid in Thailand courts should it not conform to the Thai law requirements. A Thai will should be prepared and signed on Thai territory to ensure that Thai rules regarding the form of your will apply. It is very important to observe the correct legal formalities when signing, amending, or revoking your will. If you fail to follow all of the specific formalities, then your Last Will won’t be legally valid.

Greece – what’s next? I love Greece and her people. Some of my best holiday memories are of hopping around the islands there. Nonetheless, the fact is Greece, having received the biggest loan/bailout in history, is generally perceived as having been in financial disarray for a very long time. I remember in the ’80s and ’90s you could hardly go a few kilometres around the better known islands without seeing ‘European Project’ with the familiar blue and gold star flag of the EU. At that stage, Europe was trying to bring the less wealthy nations up to the levels already achieved in the better-off countries. Since then, Greece has become insolvent and the colossal bailout they have received has failed to stem the decline; in fact there has been a dramatic fall in GDP. It could well be argued that giving a huge loan to an economy in such a dire position is folly unless there is a plan, adhered to, that will put their finances back in the black. The fact is that nowhere near enough reform has been implemented to rectify the deep seated issues in Greece. The reality is that probably, in time, the EU and Greece would both be better off were Greece to leave the Euro and return to the Drachma. If this were to happen, Greece would, no doubt have, initially at least, a significantly downvalued currency making it far more competitive on the word stage, boosting tourism and its other major economic drivers. The Euro would be damaged in the short term but none of the other Eurozone countries are in as bad a predicament as Greece and contagion is unlikely to become a reality, in our view. The damage Greece’s situation, which accounts for less than 2 percent of the EU economy, has and is doing to the credibility of EU Financial Union is almost certainly worse than a so-called ‘Grexit’. In our view, there is no plausible way for Greece to continue on its current path and the EU cannot just give the Greeks a ‘haircut’, or wipe out the debt; the ramifications would likely be a disaster, with other member states knocking on the door for the same treatment. The remedy for the Greeks is in their own hands. A large percentage of the population works for the government, which means they are not involved in any enterprise and hence do not contribute to the wealth of the country. Consequently, those in the private sector have to carry the burden of vast numbers of civil servants. Like all of us in this world Greece must make more than it spends over time, however, the fact is that they have been living beyond their means for decades, with no substantive commitment to make the changes necessary to rectify the situation. Simply blaming the EU, ECB, IMF and Germany makes no sense; were it not for Germany and those other institutions Greece would have defaulted long ago, during the financial crisis. Their new senior politicians talk of ‘humiliation’ but don’t mention how things got into this state. I could see a time when Greece could regain its national pride and the EU could put the years of ruminating over this problem behind them. By biting the bullet now and allowing Greece to leave the Euro but remain in the Union, the Greeks would get a fresh start at managing their own affairs and would have the financial tools at their disposal to potentially revitalise the economy, which, in our opinion, is the most likely route for them to be able make meaningful inroads in the debt they owe. Coming to some compromise giving Greece more time to pay with them staying in the Euro is, to use a well-known phrase, just ‘kicking the can down the road’ and does not actually help Greece or the Eurozone.

Building Your Own Dream House (Part 3) Considering the costs involved in building your new ‘Dream Home’ In our last installment of this series, Building Your Own Dream House (Part 2), we discussed preparing oneself to meet a home design professional by drafting a well-thought-out ‘Home Design and Layout Checklist’. This issue, we would like to discuss the best ways to go about estimating the costs necessary to build your new dream home. A little research will give you the knowledge you need to cut material costs dramatically and save time and effort in the construction phase. Often, persons wanting to design their own dream home are anxious to get an idea of costs before presenting their home design blueprints to building contractors. Here are some tips on how to get a rough estimate as well as some insight into issues that might affect cost. You may take the total square meters of your home design and multiply that by the average square-meter construction costs for similar homes in your area; that will give you a fair idea of what you can expect the new home to cost. You also must consider the quality and features you plan to
use. If you are building an average home, factor in medium-range prices. If you plan to build a luxury home with the highest quality materials and/or more expensive features, obviously you will need to factor in higher priced building materials. Once you have estimated construction costs, add that to the cost of the plot of land on which the house will be built; the total of the two will give you a ballpark estimate of your overall costs. Remember, construction costs can vary widely depending on local market conditions, lot improvements, quality of materials, and many other factors. The above process is meant strictly to assist you in determining a very rough estimate. The very best way for you to determine (competitively and with the best possible pricing!) your new dream home’s building costs is to present copies of your home design blueprints to three of the better building contractors in your area. A good set of home plans prepared by a competent architectural design professional will surely save you money.

a suitable detailed set of blueprints that will eliminate unknowns when a contractor calculates estimates for you. The contractor can then be much more competitive on building and material costs. Lacking such detailed blueprints, however, the contractor can only provide you with a rough idea of costs (in which case, be prepared to pay more than the rough estimate. Much more.) Make sure that you supply the building contractor with detailed information about the materials and plans you have for your new home. We suggest that you actually draft an agreement that is signed by both the building contractor and you (the client) that describes and specifies each and all of the types, styles and qualities of materials you expect to see in your new home. Also, include very detailed information describing the quality of work promised. A signed agreement between both parties, containing very detailed information about the cost of materials and plans, will definitely make the building contractors more competitive in their pricing and will make it easier for you to compare several

estimates. Once again, this will certainly help reduce your homebuilding costs significantly. As you can see, there are many variables involved in the cost of building your dream home and it is quite difficult to accurately determine the ultimate price tag. Other cost factors you will want your building contractors to consider include the location, floor plans, accoutrements, and special finishing details. The grand total will very much be influenced by your choice of builder. I must emphasize that all of the above considerations are vital to help you and your contractor achieve the most accurate and most competitive price for your new home. You may decide to go with a lesser known yet competent building contractor to save money or—to avoid some of the stress that often comes with saving money—you may choose to go with a more expensive, proven professional. This is a most important consideration. As I have said for many years now, “Cheap is very expensive in Thailand”! Best of luck with your new Dream Home!

New Resident Manager at Amari Pattaya Although new to Pattaya, Richard Gamlin is delighted to have been appointed to his new position at Amari Pattaya. “The hotel has a lot of advantages", says Richard, “including the best location in North Pattaya, overlooking the spectacular bay and in a tranquil setting yet less than two kilometres away from the frenetic downtown area.”
o
ther major selling points include the two spectacularly appointed wings of the hotel. The Amari Garden, with 226 artfully designed rooms with an Asian flare, is complemented by the Amari Ocean with 297 stylishly furnished suites with flashes of red dark wood and polished stone. The hotel as a whole is set in lush
gardens with all the amenities associated with five-star luxury accommodation in this day and age. A New Zealander with a lifelong interest in food issues – he began baking at home in his pre-teen years – Richard joined the air force in 1985 before taking up a varied career in the hospitality business which lasted 25 years before taking up his current position as resident manager.

GM Outlook Amari Pattaya has been evolving since the 1970s and we are determined to maintain our lead position in the new Pattaya.
He has worked in the past with Hilton in China for eight years and most recently held the position of director of Operations at Hilton Wuhan Optics Valley located in the hi-tech development zone southeast of the city of Wuhan. He was appointed to Amari Pattaya in November 2014. His new post as resident manager involves deputizing for the general manager in his absence but concentrates on operational details to ensure the smooth running of
the enterprise on a daily basis. The success of Richard and his colleagues is best indicated by the rave reviews on the social media, especially TripAdvisor, with Amari Garden currently figuring in the best five hotels in the region. As regards dining, one of the secrets of the success of Amari is that two of its finest and popular outlets are widely seen as city restaurants rather than places where guests go to eat. The Tavern by the Sea is a lively, fun sports bar, perfect for enjoying football and relaxing near Pattaya’s colorful shoreline. There’s a first-class selection of beers and other drinks in addition to a fine assortment of international pub food including American and Tex-Mex favorites. And then there is the worldfamous Mantra located at the front of the hotel complex. Chic, stylish and unlike any other Pattaya restaurant, Mantra blends a range of global cuisine with an open-kitchen style of dining.
It consistently ranks among the best places to eat in the city with a comprehensive menu including Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Italian pizza oven and seafood specialties. Each cuisine has its own specialized staff and dedicated cooking island to ensure authenticity and freshness. Pattaya, as is well known, is a rapidly changing city which is increasingly similar to Bangkok in terms of its high-class facilities. “We have a truly international clientele,” says Richard, “but each year brings some differences. At the moment we are seeing a decline in the Russian market but an increase in the number of Chinese and ASEAN visitors.” He adds that the Thai domestic market is particularly strong in 2015 with government statistics showing that 41 percent of all visitors to Pattaya are Thai nationals. Another noticeable trend is the development of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) segment in which the hotel is playing a leading role. “We are seeing an increasing number of corporate

events as well as social celebrations such as weddings and family reunions,” says Richard. Amari Pattaya is also a member of the North Pattaya Alliance, a federation of seven hotels in the area, which is campaigning to market the unique attractions of North Pattaya compared with other areas of the city – for example ease of access to Suvarnabhumi airport and a much quieter and lush environment than the downtown districts. Amari Pattaya has been serving the city’s tourism industry since the 1970s. Indeed, there are apparently a small number of staff members
today who were employed in the same hotel all those years ago. Not only has the hotel adapted to all the changes since then – in terms of catchment and customer expectation – but is now tackling the “new” Pattaya with its family and business orientation. This is a much more upmarket version of the “old” Pattaya which was dominated by the sole attraction of nightlife. City Hall has indicated that Pattaya’s destiny is to become the French Riviera of Thailand within the next 10 years. Amari Pattaya is playing its part to help bring about that transformation.

Tips & Advice
this service to obtain your medical extension, so check with them first.
Visa extension Q: I am a UK citizen with a month on arrival stamp in my passport. I wish to stay in Thailand for a further three weeks, so is it necessary for me to leave the country to obtain a 21 days extension? A: No, under rules introduced in the summer, you can take your passport to the Immigration Bureau for a further 30 days. That will be a total of 60 days, but you must then leave the country before the end of the extension period. The regulation applies to some countries only.
Illness and overstay 2 Q: My friend went to the immigration to obtain a medical extension on my behalf, but I see that I was given only one month extension when I need two to recuperate from a serious operation. So what happens now? A: The length of time given by the immigration is really a matter of officer discretion. Before the end of the extension period you were given, your friend should return to the Immigration Bureau with all the necessary documentation plus a new and detailed letter from the hospital doctor explaining why you need more time. In our experience, these letters from doctors vary a great deal in the amount of medical detail they give. The more detail, the better.
Work permit woes Q: I have a double entry non-immigrant “B” visa and am currently applying for a work permit here in Thailand. I have been told that the application may take three or four months so I may need to leave on a visa run before the actual granting. But how do I stay in Thailand to perform my work after the granting? Do I have to leave the country to obtain yet another non-immigrant “B”? A: No you don’t. Once the work permit is granted, the Immigration Bureau can issue you with a one-year visa based on the non-immigrant “B” you already have. The fee is 1,900 baht. The bureau can provide you with a list of documents required when the time comes.

Illness and overstay 1 Q: I am having an emergency operation next week and my 30-day stamp on arrival will have expired by the time I am able to leave the country. I assume there is a special provision to deal with this problem. A: Not really. Overstay is overstay. You could get a friend to obtain a medical extension on your behalf. He or she should take to immigration a passport photo of you, the signed TM7 application form, your passport and a detailed letter from a hospital doctor describing your condition and how long you need. Cost 1,900 baht. Alternatively, go into overstay and pay the fine at the airport on leaving – 500 baht a day up to 20,000 baht. But take with you detailed medical records and a letter from the hospital to avoid any misunderstandings about why you are on overstay. The first option is best. Some hospitals offer

Your intimate counselor Unpleasant smell Dear Agony Ivy, My husband has a most embarrassing problem which it is very difficult for either of us to speak about in public. We did actually visit our family doctor but he thought we were making a silly joke and ordered us off the premises. Writing to you is our last chance to try and solve this highly indelicate situation. We can no longer invite friends round for a meal as they don’t want to eat anything. The problem is that my husband makes a lot of noise from down below whenever he sits down. It really is a trumpet roar rather than a strong wind. I do not need to elaborate on the awful aspects of his problem, notably the odor. We used to be keen bridge players but you have to move to a new table every 20 minutes or so. This means that we have given up playing bridge which is a great pity as we are quite good players. Both of us are praying you can help. Phyllis Trump Agony Ivy writes: Come to think of it, you won’t fancy playing musical chairs either I suppose. I don’t think medicine is
going to help here although recent technology on the home front just might. If you visit your local joke shop, you may well find that it sells cushions which let out a loud noise whenever anybody sits down. If you buy a sufficient number to place on all your seating accommodation, everyone will make the same sort of noise. This will certainly take the pressure off your husband as everybody will be in the same boat. Luxury eating Dear Agony Ivy, To say I am financially embarrassed would be a chronic understatement and, to make matters worse, I have a large appetite. I just love my food. But eating out has become very expensive as you are no doubt aware and I am fast running out of options. I have tried ordering a bowl of soup in a restaurant, usually the cheapest menu choice, and asking for more bread rolls until I am full which can take a long time. However, I have become too well known in my area of town and the café owners refuse to serve me at all as they believe I am trying to cheat them. So I am
wondering whether you have any bright ideas on where I can eat for nothing? Hard Up Harold Agony Ivy writes: A couple of suggestions do spring to mind. You need to take regular walks up and down the Pattaya sois and look for collections of balloons adorning the outside. This is the sign that a party is shortly to be held there and it won’t be difficult for you to mingle with the guests and nab a couple of heaped platefuls from the inevitable buffet. However, don’t make the mistake of staying too long or becoming too greedy or your reputation is going to get you barred sooner or later. The bar owners in Pattaya are a miserly bunch I hear. Another idea is to keep your eyes open for the formal opening of a condominium or property launch. Invariably there are sandwiches, snacks and finger food on which you will be able to gorge as long as you are reasonably discreet. These events tend to be high class, even elitist, so it would be a bad idea to turn up in shorts, T-shirt and a handkerchief in knots as your preferred headgear.
Snap Judgment Coup balance sheet It is almost nine months since the military putsch which displaced the elected government of Yingluck Shinawatra. So what are the pluses and minuses from the farang perspective? Here in Pattaya, the main effect of the coup arguably has been a beach-clean up which has left some tourists bewildered. On Wednesdays in particular, the beaches have been returned to the people but whether the latter actually want that is a debated issue. Some old hands and expats seem to prefer matters as they were before the business operators and hawkers were put under pressure and services were axed. There is also a hint of ambiguity about the rationalization of hired motorbike services. It is true that most motorbike taxi boys and girls now wear the correct uniform, but whether the supposed scams of queue jumping and overcharging have disappeared is a moot point. Again, many farang had few or no problems with the system as it used to be. In broader terms, anecdotal evidence suggests that most farang are comfortable with the post-coup situation. Prior to military intervention, we were told that any putsch would be resisted on the streets with civil war a possibility. But the anticoup movement has been extraordinarily low key with senior Redshirts saying they will not cause the junta any problems which could delay the next general election. Not even the impeachment proceedings against Yingluck could shake an admittedly uneasy truce. Most tourists and expats are probably just relieved that the streets of Bangkok are free of violence, except for relatively minor incidents such as the explosions on February 1 in a Bangkok shopping district. Some forms of tourism have certainly shrunk compared with previous years. Speak to the British bar owners in South Pattaya or the German ones in North Pattaya and they will leave you in no doubt. Russian tourism is also down for reasons which are obvious. But the numbers of visitors from China, India and ASEAN partner countries have been rising. Slowly but surely, the emphasis is moving east although Thailand will always remain international in ethos. On the economic front, the country is moving forward at a slow pace. Gone are the heady days of 9 percent growth in the 1980s and 1990s, fuelled in part by the discovery of natural gas. However, the latest figures do show a growth of around 2 percent annually and is a norm for many developing countries round the globe. In Thailand, particular problems are the relatively high cost of labor (compared with the Philippines, Cambodia, Burma etc) and the actual shortage of labor. The good news is that there’s a growing trend for some Thai industries to expand their production bases in newly-emerging economies across ASEAN, as well as China, in order to access local markets and to maintain competitiveness of their products and brands across the world. For example, Thailand’s plastic industry has an ambitious goal of becoming the global hub for the emerging bio-plastics industry. But the ultimate question is when the next general election will be and under what conditions. The original date given by the coup leaders, October 2015, has been gradually pushed forward until “sometime” in 2016. Even the calling of a referendum to ratify, or not, the new constitution could delay the polls by several months. Some commentators hope that the date will be even later to give the reform agenda time to be implanted properly. But as can be seen from experience in other countries, the longer a coup administration is in office the more the resentment will grow. General Prayut Chan-o-cha has achieved a lot in his nine months in office, but the next year or so will be the deciding timeframe. Some goals are unachievable – one of them being total reconciliation between opposing factions by holding invitations to hold talks on readjusting attitudes. Any political system automatically breeds controversy. In these days of universal social media, disagreements are bound to surface and sooner rather than later. How the military junta will handle that sensitive issue is probably its greatest challenge.

Youth Focus Classroom Observation by Rob Cable In this article I will discuss multimodal semiotic analysis and its functions in the classroom. Semiotics is the discipline that concerns itself with the meaning of all kinds, in all forms, everywhere. Sign is the central concept of semiotics; it is an entity in which meaning and form have been brought together in a single unit – of signified and signifier…(Kress et al. 2005. English in Urban Classrooms: A Multimodal Perspective on Teaching and Learning) Multimodal semiotic analysis is a tool used to observe and evaluate a variety of
phenomena that directly affect how meaning is established. The classroom environment and the modalities a teacher uses – including classroom layout, teacher movement,
visual display, speech, gaze, gesture, embodiment, voice quality, students’ posture and movement – produce a highly complex and multilayered set of ‘signs’ to express and shape meaning. I observed a Year 3 Primary class of 24 students at the Mooltripakdee International School and I discovered just how much influence and control the teacher had over the class through a multitude of complex signs; some of which I had never even considered before. I quickly noted that by placing their desk centrally at the front of the classroom the teacher had established a discourse of surveillance and authority. I also noticed that the tables were assembled
in four pairs of two, with six children sitting at each table, all of which faced the teacher. This suggested a constructivist and participatory approach, but I also felt that it helped to maintain order and keep the children engaged. I was surprised to witness how little of the floor space the teacher used to move around the classroom, particularly during the introduction and instruction phase of the lesson. The teacher slowly patrolled an area at the front of the class, adopting a ‘didactic’ approach to teaching. This seemed to establish strict control and inculcate authority, while reinforcing the social
Benefits of Extracurricular Activities
by Jojo Jimenez Patubo
Extracurricular activities facilitate in the development of various domains of mind and personality such as intellectual, emotional, social, moral and aesthetic development. Creativity, enthusiasm and positive thinking are some of the facets of personality development and the outcomes of extracurricular activities. Anda Performing Arts School provides a plethora of extracurricular activities in Music, Dance, Theater and Visual Arts. Some occur after school, and mostly take place on weekends. While some parents are a bit dubious about their children participating in
extracurricular activities, these activities actually bring with them many benefits. Benefit #1 – Raises self-esteem Many times, being involved in extracurricular activities helps to raise the self-esteem of children. There are many children that feel worthless or that there is nothing they are good at. They struggle with self-esteem, and these activities are a way that they can build self-esteem. Everyone wants to find something that they are really good at, and extracurricular activities provide them with a way that they can get involved in something and really shine, giving their self-esteem a boost. Benefit #2 – Learning time management and prioritizing One great benefit of your children being involved in extracurricular activities is that they will learn about time management and prioritizing things in their life. As adults, we get very used to juggling a variety of different tasks and commitments. Our children need to learn how to do this as well, and getting involved in
these activities can give them some practice at it.
to discover their hidden talents and nurture their skills.
Benefit #3 – Making a contribution Extracurricular activities allow your child to make a contribution in some way. It shows that they are getting away from just thinking about themselves and contributing to something else. This is important in their growth as a person.
Benefit #5 – Building solid relationship skills Your children will have the benefit of building solid relationship skills as well when they get involved in extracurricular activities. Children need to get involved in social activities and learn appropriate acts in social situations and these activities give them a chance outside of school to do this, while they are still being supervised by adults.
Benefit #4 – Getting involved in diverse interests Getting involved in extracurricular activities also allows students to get involved in diverse interests. It is important for your children to be very diverse in their interests. It gives opportunity
Benefit #6 – Learning about long-term commitments Children learn about longterm commitments when they are involved in extracurricular
separation between the teacher and the students. The teacher used gaze, open palm and index finger gestures to prevent children from shouting out, which successfully encouraged them to raise their hands before speaking. I believe that the advantages of multimodal semiotic analysis are that it provides teachers with a broad understanding and realisation of the modes effectively transmitted in the classroom. It provides teachers with detailed feedback enabling them to reflect upon the needs of their students and develop any areas of weakness in their pedagogy. I also believe that it
helps to improve observation techniques by making teachers aware of all the signs that affect learning in the classroom. I would argue that the limitations of multimodal semiotic analysis are that it can be a little subjective, relying heavily on the perspective of the observer. Signs could be misinterpreted or culturally misconstrued and teachers may alter their pedagogy in order to satisfy the needs of the observer. This could create a biased and unnatural teaching environment. Rob Cable is a Primary Year 3/1 classroom teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.
activities as well, which is another excellent benefit. When they join one of the activities, they commit themselves to that activity for a period of time. Learning to take on commitments is important, and these activities can teach your child this important lesson.
you are doing it for their well-being and future success. Allowing your child to get involved in extracurricular activities is a wise choice. Youth Focus 2015: A GIS Space Odyssey by Ian Fraser One of humankind’s greatest accomplishments was to successfully land men on the moon and then return them safely to Earth. As part of its ongoing commitment to Education Outside the Classroom, Garden International School (GIS) took 55 students from
the Year 9 and IB cohorts, as well as five staff members, to the NASA – A Human Adventure exhibition in Bangkok. The reason for the trip was simple: not only is Gravity and Space a Year 9 science topic, and Astrophysics an option topic studied by IB Diploma Physics students, but this was a once in a lifetime
educational opportunity. The entrance to the exhibition was a simulation of the gantry elevator compartment used in a typical space rocket launch. A video showed the famous “10,9,8,7…” countdown of a NASA Apollo mission after which the elevator door rumbled open and students were pitched into their own mission to explore and interact with the many exhibits on display. After making their way past walls bedecked with the giants of international space travel, such as Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard, rocket science was the order of the day for the excited students – the “Pioneers” section was behind a large glass façade covered in complex Physics equations related to rocketry and Newton’s laws of motion.
All you need is love
With the scent of roses still fresh in the air from Valentine’s Day, it is timely that this week, Tara Pattana International School (TPIS) has been holding meetings with parents and students as part of its Sex and Relationships Education Policy. We believe that all children should experience a planned programme of sex and relationships education (SRE) that offers them the opportunity to explore attitudes and values, and develop personal and social skills, as well as learning the facts necessary for life. SRE is a continuing, developmental process, which includes the exploration of attitudes and values and the development of skills, as well as the presentation of factual knowledge. As with all other learning, it should be gradual and matched to the child’s maturity and stage of development. TPIS has worked closely with Dr. Napaporn, an experienced doctor from the Women’s Health Center at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and Mirjam Onderdelinden, the school’s Special Education Coordinator, to develop a programme that places sex
education firmly in a context of social and emotional development and addresses questions of how to deal with the stresses and strains of growing up. Both are parents with young children at the school. The statistics show that there is an urgent need for all schools to fully meet their responsibilities for SRE, and that this must be done in a relevant and accessible way that genuinely attempts to answer the questions that students want answered. A 2012 UNICEF report states that “Thailand is home to approximately 10.2 million adolescents, or about 15 percent of the total population. Thailand’s birth rate per 1,000 females aged 15-19 is 431 placing it at second highest among countries in East Asia and the Pacific after Lao PDR”. In 2010, according to an article in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, there were an estimated 80,000 adolescent pregnancies (approximately 200 adolescent deliveries daily) and reportedly 14.4 percent of these pregnancies resulted in illegal abortions.” Although sex education is part of the national school

curriculum in Thailand, current teaching is clearly insufficient. The Ministry of Education limits instruction on the subject to eight hours a year despite changing attitudes towards sex among the young. “Teachers are prudish and out of touch with Thai kids today and they approach the topic like a biology class rather than talking about the emotional issues involved,” said Visa Benjamano, a commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC). A survey of more than 2,500 school and university students by the National Union of Students in the U.K. published in the Guardian newspaper last week echoed these concerns reporting that the sex education at these students’ schools was not practical and rated it as no better than fair, poor, or terrible. On top of this, 50 percent say issues they need to know about were not covered in class. According to those surveyed, the main criticism of their SRE experience at school was that the topics were predominantly based on biology and that emotional issues, questions of consent and
A scaled-down replica of the famous Saturn V rocket which reached incredible velocities of up to 2,000 metres per second in the Apollo 11 mission was within touching distance. The lunar lander and moon rover were also on display along with the Russian lunar survey rover Lunokhod. The Endurance section of the NASA exhibition followed with examples of spacesuits worn by astronauts and cosmonauts, as well as the liquid food and even toothpaste consumed on the many missions into space. Innovation section displayed the stunning coneshaped Apollo command module with its amazing interior and exterior. dealing with relationships were neglected. While Valentine’s Day, with all its hype and commercialism, may be criticized as over sentimentalized and accused of projecting unrealistic images of the relationship between the sexes, on the other hand, the limited, dour, biology lectures that many of our schoolchildren are exposed to and which pass as sex education in many schools, may be criticized for being totally devoid of emotion and sentiment. It is up to us, as teachers, to educate our children in a manner that is responsible, realistic and informative. Set in an ongoing context which includes the exploration of feelings, hopes, disappointments, decision-making, health and happiness, and working in true partnership with parents, we can begin to empower our students so that they are able to make informed choices about their developing sexuality. In this sensitive and sometimes contentious area, it is so important to find a constructive middle path – to be able to present the birds and the bees, but with a human face! Peter Hartnell is head teacher at Tara Pattana International School.
Students could experience the punishing forces exerted on astronauts during their voyage to an orbit around the moon with a G-force simulator in the final section of the exhibition. Several GIS students and teachers eagerly stepped up to the capsule and were soon rotating at a speed which produced a centripetal acceleration equivalent to 1G.
Photos in the zero-gravity room and in replica spacesuits followed and it was soon time for a well-earned lunch break and then the long journey home. Our Brilliant Barge Trip! by Mary, Year 5 student at GIS
Year 5 students from Garden International School (GIS) had an amazing barge trip and learned all about the famous Chao Phraya River and its uses. Before we got on the boat in Bangkok we met the barge crew – Mr Craig, Ms Erica and Mr Tee who told us the safety rules. The next day, we woke up at 6:30 am and were treated to some hot chocolate. The boat was not moving yet, but I saw a wonderful temple with a big golden Buddha. We went swimming and canoeing; it was the best day of the trip. When we got in the water it was freezing! On our final day, we went shopping for breakfast at the market and it was fabulous. At 9 am we bought souvenirs and I got a badge and a key chain to remember the trip.
Over the three days, we learned lots about the river and how it is used; we even got to study the plants and animals that live on the river. We had a great time! GIS is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya.

Listen to Louis Armstrong’s most famous song, and when he gets to the verse where he hears baby’s cry and he watches them grow, ‘they’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know’ he could not have sung a truer word. Give a toddler, one who is too young even to read and write, a smart phone, an iPad or a PC, and they will use it with ease, surprising many with their ability to understand the workings of each particular piece of technology. Computers are now a part of everyday life. For those attending schools, colleges and universities the ability to use a computer is essential. Students are expected to have access to a computer to complete research and homework, and even for poor families owning a computer is a modern day necessity. The residents of the Father Ray Children’s Village and Children’s Home are no different, they want access to computers, but they do not come cheap. Thankfully there have been several donations from visitors around the world. Regular visitor to the Children’s Village, Robert Younger from Newcastle in the UK, donated, among other things, eight brand new Dell laptops. David Terrence Hall, from Kent in the UK, and Anneli Edvardsson from Denmark donated a Dell laptop and an iPad.
Members from the Daegu Wonjin Lions Club in South Korea asked for extra baggage allowance from their airline so they could transport five Samsung computers to Pattaya. All these newly donated computers will be put to good use, and while the children will be allowed time to play games, they will be of great benefit to their education.
Finnish charity bar run by A Juhana Keronen
On the 7th of March we will see again how a couple of hundred Finns wander about Pattaya from one bar to another drinking beer for charity. They are collecting money for streetkids’ shelter which is located at Thepprasit Road and operated by Father Ray Foundation. The first Kipin kapin kapakkaan
(Hurry up to the bar) charity bar run took place on the first Saturday of March 2008. Last year they donated 54,000 baht and this year they are aiming at 75,000 baht. Money comes from T-shirts In Kipin kapin kapakkaan everyone is a winner. People who buy this year’s Kipin

But more computers are needed. In 2010 the first three residents of the Father Ray Children’s Home graduated from university. Today there are 11 residents studying at campuses throughout the Kingdom. A further seven are enrolled at local vocational schools while 21 residents from the Home received scholarships to a
private school. There are 25 fifteen-yearolds, and most will want to go on to further education after leaving school, and they will all need access to a personal computer to ensure they are up-to-date with their studies. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org.
kapin kapakkaan T-shirt for 600 baht will get 11 free drinks, free buffet dinner and a T-shirt as a souvenir of the occasion, and participating bars and restaurants will get a lot of publicity and in some cases something like 200 new customers who have never before been to that establishment. On top of that the streetkids’ shelter gets a donation which has become bigger and bigger year after year.
Sponsors Sponsors play an important role in the event since they are the ones who make sure that the money collected goes to the streetkids and not to the expenses of the organization. The main sponsor of the event is Siam Oriental Trading, a big Finnish builder operating on Buddha Hill, and other sponsors are Finland Golf Thailand and the renovation company Finn-Deco. All participating restaurants are also important since the venue would not happen without them. This year’s path around the oasis of Pattaya is: Maikan Majatalo, River Bar, Black Horse II, Rahtarit Tunkki, Black Horse, Siam Oriental Plaza, New Nordic Beach Club, Spicies, Thai-Fin bar, Siambylla, Aruba Bar and Friend’s Bar. To do this a player must roll or bounce the ball down the length of the court, past the opposing defenders and into the opponents’ goal. Sounds easy, until you realize the only way to indicate the location of the ball is to listen to the sound of the small bell. The three athletes on the opposing defending team will do anything they can to stop it passing them and into the goal; they will dive and throw
themselves in the direction they think the ball will be rolling. Several students from the Pattaya campus, both male and female, have represented both Chonburi and Thailand at national and international competitions, and with the start of the goalball season soon upon us, the students in Pattaya are training several hours each day. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org.
Where is the ball? by Derek Franklin
Imagine kneeling in front of a large goal, wearing a blindfold and waiting for a very large and heavy rubber ball to come hurtling towards you. The only clue you have to the location
of the ball is by listening for the sound of a small bell that is inside the ball. Welcome to the world of goalball. Invented as a means of rehabilitation for World War II veterans, the game of goalball is now played by blind and visually impaired around the world and became a Paralympic sport in 1980. It is just one of the sports that the students at the Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind participate in, but it is the most popular by far. With three players on each team, the aim of the game is to score as many goals as possible.

Local Sports PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group by Derek Brook Khao Kheow, Stableford Well, here we are, first Tuesday of the month and we are off to one of our favorite courses, Khao Kheow. No one wonders about the condition of the course as it always seems to be a cut above the norm and the only question is, “Which nines will we be assigned to play this day?” Everyone seems to have a favorite pair or at least one nine they do not like very much. So after breakfast and last minute adjustments to the transport assignments and playing order due to a couple late noshows, we were off up the 7 and soon at the course. The trip doesn’t seem to take very long anymore even with the detours due to all the highway construction projects underway. Arriving at the course, there was a bit of a backup at the bag drop, but with many caddies ready to go we were soon out of the cars and into the office where the check-in was quick and efficient. Soon we were at B-1 being assigned to play the B and C nines this day and the starter had the first group off under sunny skies and a bit of a breeze. The pace of play was steady and with most of the walkers getting a lift between nines, the groups finished their round in 4-½ hours.

Landis and Brian Prevail at Pattana ‘Twas the first Friday of February and the Tropical Golf Group had a treat in store as the schedule called for a trip to Pattana. It was a full house at BJ’s Lodge this morning as 34 golfers gathered to partake in the breakfast and favorite brew – as in coffee or tea. What were you thinking? The organizer did a good job and all golfers were soon smoothly on their way with minimum fuss.
Pattana is a fine course, and is there any better clubhouse to come back to after a round? Conditions this day were good all around, even the weather cooperated, and we were assigned the A and C nines. It was great to have a reasonable starting hole other than the dreaded B-1. Fairways were pretty good and mostly weed free. The greens at Pattana are challenging (to be polite) but that goes with the territory when playing a higher end course. The only complaint was some greens were quite hard – as in solid, making many approach shots nearly impossible to hold. Some greens were also quite hard – as in contoured. Three putts were common. Playing off the yellow tees compensated somewhat for the course difficulty. Back at BJ’s it took a while to tabulate so many scores, but finally the results came out. A Flight (0-16): Landis Brooks (9) showed why it is a single digiter with the best score of the day racking up an impressive 40 points. Great playing and putting Landis! Next in line was Bob Edwards (11) with a close 39 points, followed by Andre Van Dyk (16) with 37, and then Ted Morris (14) and Richard Kubicki (10) each with 36. B Flight (17+): This was the day of 37 points with a 4-way countback! You & Your Pets Trimming Pet Care Costs [Part II] Instead of spending money on frivolous toys that eventually will be ignored or tasty treats that cost more than your desserts, eliminate or at least cut back on such expenses and put the savings into a special pet fund. Every week or so put aside a fixed amount to be used for possible emergencies. If there are no emergencies, convert that savings into an old age Pet Pension. Recognizing that household pets are living longer these days, thanks to better nutrition and veterinary care, it also means they may require more visits to the vet and perhaps more medication as they age. If you have that Pet Pension set aside, you can more readily meet those higher old-age costs. That fund may also help cover any costs related to your pet’s ultimate death (euthanasia, cremation, etc.). In the meantime, while your pet is young and healthy, make sure that he or she has a healthy diet of quality dog food or cat food served in moderate portions. Cheap food too often is laden with fillers. 1. Serve Healthy Food in Moderate Portions Buy premium-quality food “Buy a good, premium-quality dog or cat food,” advises one veterinarian. “Don’t go crazy,” he says, but remember that cheaper foods will set you back in the end. They are full of less digestible filler material and artificial colors that offer no nutrients and can contribute to allergies and digestive problems. A high-quality, age-appropriate food results in a healthy coat, more energy and fewer costly trips to the vet. Don’t overfeed This includes resisting the urge to spoil your pets with too many treats! “You don’t need to feed your pets as
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

much as people do,” he reminds us. “One of the things we’re confronting is a huge obesity problem. Serving moderate portions not only saves you money on food ―it also reduces the likelihood of obesity.”
products that you know nothing about could prove to be harmful or of poor quality. And if you rotate your pet’s toys, they’ll stay interested without you having to buy new ones every few months.
2. Shop Around Medications Call the local pharmacy or look online for lower prices. Just be sure to compare the same quantities and dosages when you’re looking at prices.
3. Groom Your Pets at Home Save the price of a visit to your groomer with regular brushings. While you’re at it, you’ll reduce the hair around your home and your cats will have fewer hairballs. Trim your pet’s nails on a regular basis. It’s not hard to do, and you’ll likely save yourself the cost of new furniture and curtains.
Veterinarians and Hospitals When looking for a reliable, costeffective veterinarian’s office, check out a few before you settle on one. Ask for recommendations from pet owners you know. Some vets’ offices also offer multi-pet or senior pet discounts. Compare fees and be sure to find out what is covered during a routine visit in each office. Pet Supplies Buy supplies online or in bulk. Just keep in mind that it’s wise to get product recommendations from your vet first. Online or store-bought
Still got visions of your dog gliding down the cat walk in a couture collar? Face it, your pet could probably care less whether she’s wearing Gucci. A good quality leash and collar with a nylon braid should run you no more than 500 baht and should last for years. You don’t need to buy all the fancy stuff. Yes, your pets love toys and an occasional treat, but the best gift you can give to your furry loved one is your attention!
You’re probably prepared in case a member of your family gets injured or has a medical problem. But do you know what to do if your pet chokes on a bone or is involved in an accident? This Pattaya Today feature will help answer some common first aid questions related to your pets. Such information could mean the difference between life and death.
Fight fleas but do it safely These little pests can cause big problems for your pets, including skin disease, anemia, scratching, allergies, and tapeworms. There are many products available to help you control the fleas on your pet and in your home, but it’s of utmost importance that whatever you use is approved for use on your pet’s species. In other words, don’t use products for dogs on your cat, and vice versa.
Cats especially are extremely sensitive to insecticides, and many pets die annually from improper use of flea control products. Ask your vet for a recommendation, and don’t forget – when fighting fleas, you’ll need to treat ALL the pets in the household, not just those who are obviously infested, their bedding, and any areas of your home where fleas may be hiding.
Going to the Dogs...
One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you’re feeling blue is that he doesn’t try to find out why. ~Author Unknown
This fun-loving cat has been with us for a while now, being known here as the oldest kitten in town. She just loves tearing about the place, climbing trees and getting into mischief.
Splash and Dexter
This friendly pair loves to play together as you can see in the photo. Splash came to us with two kittens which have already been re-homed and Dexter arrived last year after being found in a garden when he was just a tiny kitten. A new home together would be great.
Tansy
Tansy is our meet and greet cat, he is always the first at the gate when people come to visit. He has to have his eyes cleaned every day after some surgery that he received when he was just a tiny kitten. As you can see, his favorite hobby is eating.
Minstral
This lovely, fun-packed kitten is now just about 12 weeks old. He came from a local temple and has been quite poorly since he came to us in December. As you can see, he is fit and well now and bursting with energy. He is also a very loving boy who enjoys a cuddle.
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
It is natural for cats to stretch their toes and shed their claws as they grow – sort of like humans clipping their nails as they grow. People see this as “sharpening their claws.” The claws do become sharper, but only because it’s the new nail coming in when the old one is pulled away. Cats are not scheming to do damage with this; it’s instinct that drives them to groom their feet this way. After all, they can’t run down to the store and buy clippers or nail files. If you don’t want them scratching you or the furniture, you will have to develop some new routines or options for them to accomplish this personal task. Offer a scratching area, such as a post, or a board with a nifty scratching surface, for example. Ask your vet or groomer to show you how to safely clip their nails. You will have to experiment to see what works best in your home. As with humans, cats have different personalities, personal preferences and habits. Dr. Peters is author of three informative and entertaining books: Our Amazing Cats; Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2 and Our Amazing Dogs, available for about 200 baht each at Amazonbooks.com and www.ouramazingcats.com.
