TOURIST SAFETY TO IMPROVE
T
he government has agreed to concentrate on tourist safety and welfare after an international report concluded that Thailand still has too many problems. According to the World Economic Forum in a competitive safety report, Spain was ranked as the world’s most tourist-friendly country whilst Thailand was limited to 35th place. However, Thailand’s ranking has improved from the same report in 2013, coming 8th in Asia behind Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan. Spain’s top showing was attributed to its cultural resources, first-class airports, infrastructure strength, accessibility of tourist help services and top-class wireless internet services. The next best destinations were said to be France, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom. Specifically on tourist safety, the report states, “Thailand experienced a decline in tourists’ confidence beginning in December 2008

when international airports started closing and many foreign tour agents quit the country.” The report also mentions prolonged street disturbances in 2013 and 2014 which were brought to an end by the military putsch on May 22 last year and the imposition of martial law. Other factors which have acted detrimentally to Thailand are several well-publicized murders of tourists, especially on holiday islands, and highprofile street crimes including the recent case of a tourist being injured in Pattaya by the shoe of a transvestite whose offer of a sexual service had been rebuffed. There has also been negative international reaction to scams such as Jet Ski ripoffs which led to a diplomatic outcry in Phuket. According to John Venables from the Association of British Travel Agents, “Thailand is seen as a newsworthy destination, especially in Britain, and isolated incidents are likely to be picked up and broadcast more readily than in some other countries.”
The Thai government has acknowledged the country’s perceived weaknesses and has sought to address them. In particular, the Jet Ski menace has been addressed in Phuket and Pattaya in particular. A spokesman for the tourist court in Pattaya said that the number of reported instances of overcharging had shrunk to practically zero. The establishment of tourist courts, a surviving initiative of the defunct Yingluck
Shinawatra administration, has been a valuable asset in Pattaya as it has powers to arbitrate a dispute in some circumstances and can take witness statements from foreigners without their having to wait months until a court case is actually held. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has taken a personal interest in addressing the issue of the Continued on page 4

News Police arrest eight gamblers
Police raided a house in Eakmongkol Village, Jomtien, and found six women and two men earnestly gambling on a card game which was similar to the British version of Snap. The group was taken to Pattaya police station for processing and was released after payment of the mandatory fine. The main resident of the house, Saowalak, was arrested and police also collected evidence of wrongdoing including several packs of cards.
Underage prostitute Ladyboy and liberated date attacked
Learning that a 15-year-old girl was working as a prostitute in a Thepprasit Road karaoke venue, a plainclothes police officer paid the bar owner 1,500 baht for her services, then immediately arrested the woman for pimping. The underage girl said she turned to prostitution because she wanted to work at the karaoke bar but was unable to sing. The girl, who appeared to be homeless and without family, was sent to the social services for help with housing and learning a vocation.
A farang and his transvestite date complained to police that they were riding on a motorbike when a car cut in front of them. The car’s driver pulled over and reprimanded the couple the near accident, and invited bystanders to join the fray. Some blows were exchanged, then everyone fled. Police were not sure if there was anti-gay bias involved in the incident.
Crime statistics revealed Chonburi police authorities announced that 74 miscreants were arrested locally during the month of May. Thirtyseven people were apprehended for possessing or trafficking in illegal substances, seven for having unlawful weapons, and eight for gambling. Meanwhile seven people were charged with illegal entry, two for stealing a motorbike, and 13 for robbery. A large quantity of drugs, six guns and 11 stolen motorbikes were also taken into custody.
Illegal lottery crimes exposed Banglamung district chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta heard a worrying report that lottery tickets were being sold with the lure of the prize money in gold on the South Pattaya Road. He therefore informed police and a party of officials visited a gold shop near the Wat Chai Mongkol market. A man apparently selling tickets, Lert Pangam, was arrested. Officials confiscated the gold lottery as well as 13,500 baht in cash. The accused organizer said he had only acted on the instructions of a gold shop owner nearby.

Thailand strengthens MICE industry ties with Germany The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization), or TCEB, has unveiled the next step in its strategy to boost confidence among German and European Union business events stakeholders in Thailand’s MICE industry, positioning the country as a gateway to success in ASEAN. The bureau is spearheading both global initiatives including the Thailand CONNECT The World and Thailand’s MICE United II campaigns, and targeted initiatives for Germany, such as special financial subsidies of up to 25,000 euro for large corporate meeting groups and per head incentives for groups who engage in business matching activities, among others. The bureau reported that from October 2014 to March 2015, Thailand welcomed 70,316 high-quality visitors from Europe, generating 172.4 million euro for the Thai economy. Germany ranked second in Europe by number of business events visitors to Thailand with 7,860 visitors. To enhance Thailand’s MICE industry in 2015 among German and EU business events stakeholders, TCEB organized the Ambassador Meeting at the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin from 16-17 May to discuss the development of Thailand’s MICE promotion in Europe with ambassadors and representatives of the Kingdom of Thailand to the European Union from 20 countries.
Foreign tourist police assistants needed Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, TCEB’s president, said, “We are confident that through a combination of our global initiatives as well as targeted local initiatives, such as those we’re presenting to German stakeholders, the Thai business events sector will continue to grow strongly in 2015. Thailand expects to welcome 1,036,300 business events visitors in 2015, generating revenue of approximately 106.78 billion baht or 2.67 billion euro.

overcharging of foreigners in some private hospitals and has called for much clearer costing guidelines. He has also supported the idea of a nationally-run 24-hour tourist helpline with contact staff being able to offer languages beyond just English and Thai to cope with the recent influx of Russian and then Chinese vacationers. In fact, the tourist police already claim to run such a service, but critics say that the designated phone numbers often play music rather than offering assistance. They also point out that some tourist safety initiatives have very short shelf lives and disappear soon after the initial publicity has waned. On policing, Pattaya has sought to tackle the problem of street crime, especially jewelry grab attacks, by
frequent patrols of popular tourist districts and the arrest of likely criminals including ladyboys acting as prostitutes. But the penalties are very minor, usually a fine of 100 or 200 baht, which means very little in practice. However, a growing number of transvestites are found to be of foreign origin, usually from Laos or Cambodia, and they are usually deported back or sent over the border. Although Pattaya has installed a huge number of CCTV cameras in public areas, supplemented by privately owned ones in entertainment venues, research has shown that many of them are out of order. In a recent case, a night watchman had hung his coat over the CCTV whilst he enjoyed his meal. He was attacked during a robbery, but the CCTV was obviously blank.
City Hall has on several occasions promised to repair the public CCTV system and called for members of the public to bring inadequacies to its attention by phoning the 24-hour helpline 1337. A spokesman for Pattaya police station pointed out that the city has roughly the same number of policemen as 10 years ago even though international tourist numbers have swelled annually. He said that mobile patrols and security checkpoints at night on major roads had been successful in apprehending fleeing thieves as well as drug traffickers and alcohol abusers. He added that there were now many Thai volunteer police, assisted by some foreigners, but their role was obviously limited as they do not have powers of arrest without the approval of a supervising regular officer.
Ronakit Ekasingh, deputy mayor, presided over the Pattaya Charity Pool Tournament 2015 with profits to be donated to the Father Ray Foundation. Each team will pay a 2,000 baht fee for registration. Club for elderly expands The president of the Pattaya Cultural Council Mana Yaprakam organized a meeting to promote the Pattaya Photo Competition which encourages local people to look into the history of the Eastern Seaboard. All the contributions will form part of a proposed Pattaya historical chronicle.
Reporters find unusual lady Pranee Maneesarn, president of the Pattaya Elderly Club, has announced that membership locally has grown from 600 to 800 in the space of one year. The minimum age for joining is 55 but members have to attend at least
six meetings a year or they risk disqualification. Pattaya Elderly Club organizes leisure activities and holds seminars on how to keep healthy in mind and body in the retirement years.
Baht bus safety examined
Pattaya police and the baht bus cooperative completed a project called “Safety Taxi” to remind baht bus drivers about safety standards and protecting passengers’ belongings. One idea was to enclose the sides
of the baht bus with wire screens to prevent stealing and pilfering. More than 200 baht bus drivers attended the confab where other topics included poor driving and illegal parking.
Reporters representing several publications in Pattaya noticed a disabled, middle-aged woman in a wheelchair by Sukhumvit Road and asked her for her story. Samruay Sritakong, 54, said she had been hit by a car many years ago and had been unable to walk since. Police were unable to locate the hitand-run driver. Samruay remains cheerful and works as a cleaner at a local temple where worshippers sometimes give her small sums of cash to help pay for her room. Her married son rarely visits her, she said, adding that she did not wish to be a burden to others.

More English required Travelling priorities Free Wi-Fi remains the top amenity among global travelers when choosing a hotel, but Thai holidaymakers list a complimentary breakfast at the top, whilst Thai business travelers prefer easy access to mass transit. These are amongst the findings of a global survey of 5,000 respondents in nearly 30 countries booking at the website Hotels.com. The survey showed that 29 percent of Thai respondents chose breakfast as a must-have when selecting their holiday accommodation. A similar number picked ergonomic mattresses as the main factor. When asked the same question, business travelers mostly said that hotels should have good proximity to mass transit, restaurants and shops. Almost half of all Thai respondents said they expected Wi-Fi in hotels to become standard by the end of 2015. With the increased availability of free public Wi-Fi hotspots and enhanced mobile data plans, travelers appear to be becoming less dependent on Wi-Fi provided by hotels. On other fronts, pilfering items from hotel bedrooms has become a travel custom with 61 percent of respondents admitting stealing something from a hotel room and not returning it. About 60 percent of Thai respondents admitted pilfering, often toiletry products or stationary, compared with 67 percent of South Koreans and only 30 percent of Singaporeans. Many hotels worldwide have reacted by insisting on an additional charge which is only returned if the room is left in proper order at checkout time. The survey also revealed that the most desired breakfast items for Thais are meats, coffee, rice, noodles, eggs and bread. High-end coffee makers or espresso machines were travelers’ favourite modern in-room amenity. Many travelers said that minibars were not worth the hype, whilst fitness centres and the habit of some hotels to provide a bed turndown service were of no interest to them when choosing accommodation on holiday or business. Pattaya’s transgenders Earlier this month was International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia or IDAHOT for those in a hurry. It bills itself as a worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversities. So what about the situation here in Thailand and Pattaya in particular? The United Nations in Thailand has praised the country’s recent progress, citing a 2011 decision to accept a resolution against discrimination and violence on the basis of sexuality – the gender equality bill and the social welfare act in 2012 were key milestones even though many people have probably never heard of them. There has been talk of including a no-discrimination clause in the new constitution and the first draft does indeed underpin that reality. On the face of things, Pattaya is a tolerant place as regards the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) rainbow. There is certainly no shortage of gay bars, at any rate for men, although the entertainment districts of Boyztown, Sunee and Jomtien Complex are a great deal quieter than they were five years ago. This is likely explained by the downturn in gay tourism from Europe, America and Australia owing to rising prices here and the availability of other locations, such as Czechoslovakia, nearer to home for some. Pattaya, it’s no secret to say, has its fair share of transvestites. Some, such as those working in cabarets, are accepted as industrious persons, but a much larger number, positioned on the Walking Street and beach areas, are a very different case. They are there either as prostitutes or as potential bag and jewelry snatchers. The local newspapers and the TV on a daily basis have examples of these scams and some even reach the international press, especially UK based. The reaction of the police is to impose small fines on miscreants which leaves them free to resume their doubtful careers. It is perhaps not stated often enough that job discrimination in Thailand, formal or informal, is responsible for the large number of transgenders who turn to crime in bustling tourist cities such as Pattaya where, or so they believe, the pickings are easier. There is also huge discrimination in the Thai army where a katoey, even post surgery, must carry an ID card stating “nai”, mister. This means that transgender individuals must wear a male uniform. In Thailand, it is far easier to undergo sexual reassignment surgery than to change your gender on a government document. Nor is it possible for people to marry in Thailand except in a traditional heterosexual union. The law is slowly catching up with a society that is indeed tolerant and progressive on issues of gender identity and sexuality. But there is still a long way to go. Road deaths One death in five in Thailand happens as a result of a road accident. Every few minutes a motorbike driver or passenger is killed outright or seriously injured. Thailand’s record in these regards is worse than almost any other country in the world, save perhaps Namibia and India. Most Thai deaths occur at night so it does not need a genius to work out that many of the deaths are connected in some way with alcohol, although the drunk motorist is not necessarily the one who gets killed. Road accidents are the most common cause of death for foreigners in Thailand under the age of 40. You have only to look at the some of the very powerful vehicles they are renting and driving to wonder if they are truly aware of the dangers on Thailand’s chaotic roads. Nor is it uncommon to see Thai youngsters, no older than 12, driving motorbikes round the city. There is, of course, no easy solution. Passing laws has been tried and found wanting. There are certainly lots of police road blocks and checkpoints, but the main purpose seems to be the raising of revenue for the police pot. Until the country as a whole starts to take road safety seriously, it can safely be anticipated that thousands will continue to bleed to death on the nation’s roads.

In addition to discussing the evils of drugs, Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta told a seminar that nightclub staffs must ensure that no one under 20 years of age may enter a the premises, and no one may possess weapons or

Family protection highlighted
Pattaya City hosted a weekend conference on Family Protection at the Diana Garden Resort in North Pattaya to encourage good relationships amongst family members. Members of 45 families attended the meeting and discussed ways of strengthening family ties and relationships during our turbulent age. It was

Also, industrialization means that the wider kin, such as grandparents, are sometimes geographically separated from their nearest and dearest.

The UK election & expats Now that the dust has settled on the May 2015 British general election, what significance is there for Thailand’s 50,000 or so UK expats? Firstly, it is wise to remember that the Conservative party is back, this time with a majority in the House of Commons, with the same Chancellor of the Exchequer. George Osborne, you may remember, was the guy who said he might well abolish the 10,500 pounds personal allowance for expats who fill in an annual tax form. He never actually did it in his March 2015 budget but muddied the waters by saying the awesome proposal might come back by 2018. Osborne was apparently dissuaded by the complexity of the tax affairs of expats. Some are living abroad on limited income which has already been taxed post-personal allowance. Some benefits, such as the British old age state pension, as well as being taxed is also frozen in most countries, including Thailand. Thus it does seem bizarre to threaten to hammer this expat group once more. Other expats, however, enjoy huge amounts of cash by renting out their UK properties and doing very nicely thank you. There may be a better case for examining the personal allowance of these rich guys. But the point is that one can’t really lump all expats together. An expat living on a modest UK pension is quite unlike a working expat earning a six figure salary. It all matters because the personal allowance means that an individual does not start paying tax until the 10,500 pounds level has been reached. The allowance is set to rise in stages until it reaches 12,500 pounds in a few years. Depending whether the tax payer is single or married and whether or not he or she pays super-tax, the actual cash sum to be forfeited is between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds annually. The government has sought to justify the potential move by arguing that British tax laws are much more generous to expats than most other countries in the European Union,
a hypothesis open to question in the opinion of many tax accountants. But expats will have to wait around two years, according to the Chancellor, until he brings in the sweeping income cuts or prefers a diluted solution or even scraps the whole idea. It is also an interesting thought that if the British referendum proposed by Prime Minister Cameron by 2017—on whether Britain should remain in the European Union— actually resulted in the UK leaving, all sorts of consequences would follow. At the moment the UK is represented at the highest level on the EU panel in Thailand, a position that would presumably be lost. Moreover, if Brits abroad found themselves in serious difficulty without any British consular assistance being available, they would not be able to take advantage of the fallback position that other EU embassies might be able to help in particular circumstances. More broadly, there might be all sorts of implications for the price of imported goods in the shops; whether the pound would rise or fall following the referendum is another consideration. Meanwhile, it is possible that Scotland might exit the United Kingdom following a second referendum on this issue, as championed by some leading members of the Scottish National Party. If that were to happen, Scots would no longer be able to travel abroad on British passports and would not be able to utilize the services of British embassies abroad. An independent Scotland would be a very small country in global terms and nobody at the moment seems to have any idea how Scots abroad would obtain replacement passports, request visas for their foreign friends and relations or receive official visits if locked up in a foreign prison. Presumably an independent Scotland would not be able to afford an embassy in most countries, as currently provided by the UK. We can only wait and see.
Sort out farang poilice It’s surely time to review the many uniforms now being worn by 200 or so foreigner volunteers in Pattaya who are connected in some way to the local police and its various divisions. Just look at all the permutations. The Foreign Police Volunteers (FPV) are based at the main police stations with their black uniform. Not to be confused with the TPA (Tourist Police Assistants) who are attached to the quite separate Tourist Police division. Then there are a handful of foreigners who are actually allowed to wear official brown police uniforms, without firearms or rank insignia, and are attached to the traffic division at the central police station. Not to mention foreigners to be found helping out City Hall (Thappraya 2030), Highway Police, Immigration and even the Marine Police. On top of all this there are individuals sporting jackets or shirts which suggest they are part of a Chonburi crime-busting organization or even a bomb disposal unit.
There is nothing wrong in principle with the local police utilizing the services of foreign volunteers. Pattaya is an international hub these days and many of the volunteers bring foreign language skills which can be of great value when members of the public find themselves in some sort of trouble. Some volunteers have army or police experience in their own countries, others have legal or diplomatic backgrounds. But it is also true that there is no central monitoring of the various individuals or groups. Some police branches insist on criminal background checks and have organized training. Others don’t appear to be too vigilant on these matters. It might be a bright idea for the local police to establish a central organization covering recruitment, checking, training, insurance, expertise and ID cards. At the moment it is often unclear what these guys (occasionally gals) are actually doing at street level, what their powers are and how suitable they are.

Delay on settlement Q: My Thai wife was recently turned down for a UK settlement visa on financial grounds but was told that no final decision could be taken as the whole matter of financial thresholds is under judicial review in the UK. How long is this likely to take? A: Nobody knows – whenever the authorized court delivers a final judgment on the secretary of state’s appeal. The embassy can still award this visa if all paperwork is in order and staff believe the application is genuine. The fact that you must now wait is not a promising sign as there is a question mark over the verification of your income which might pose a problem whatever the final judicial decision. But nothing anyone can do at this stage. You could, of course, withdraw the application, lose the fee and apply for a visit (temporary) visa. Whether you are well advised to do this would require an in-depth discussion of the circumstances of your wife and yourself. Extending under arrest Q: My friend was recently arrested for a sex attack although he claims he is not guilty. He obtained bail at the local court, but his passport was lodged there. His 60-day tourist visa expires soon and he needs to visit immigration to make an extension as the court case is still some weeks away. How can he do that without his passport? A: Your friend needs to take his paperwork – the arrest and the bail receipt – to the court as there is a provision for the authorities to loan him his passport to visit immigration. The process is a bit complicated, so he may need to take with him a Thai speaker who can overcome the obvious hurdles. But the essential thing when dealing with Thai bureaucracy is the right paperwork. Risky husband Q: I am the British common-law husband of a Thai woman who owns a shop in a Pattaya suburb. It is not a posh setup and sells only basic foods and some hardware items. The other day, when my partner was ill, I served a few customers in the shop and this is not the first time I have done that. But a neighbour told me that I was committing a crime and could risk prosecution and deportation. Surely this can’t be right? I have a one-year retirement visa. A: Technically it is correct. Thai labour laws are very strict and working is defined as performing such an activity whether remunerated or not. If a problem were to occur, it would likely be because a local Thai took an exception to your activity, perhaps because of jealousy in a rival business. Our advice has to be to keep a low profile if you don’t have a work permit. Too sick to attend Q: My brother is in the intensive care unit and his visa is about to run out. The hospital bursar says he should get a friend to obtain a medical extension. However, she was not sure how to do this. Have you the right information for me to undertake this task? A: The hospital needs to provide a letter for immigration which describes the illness, the suggested length of the extension and the fact that he is too sick to leave the country. You also need to make sure you have a passport size photo of your brother’s face even if he is in bed. You then go to immigration with the paperwork and fill in the usual TM7 form which you can sign on his behalf. A common misunderstanding is that immigration wants medical records in some detail. They don’t – they want a clear letter on hospital letterhead as outlined above.

Foodland Supermarket Dicey Reilly’s Wine Tasting International Food & Beverage by Mick and Di Barker
It is that time of the year again when Foodland Supermarket holds its annual International Food and Beverage party at Foodland Pattaya branch on Central Road. Foodland has brought food from many international cuisines to be available for customers to sample and taste including numerous varieties of wines from all over the world. Supamit Surongsain, assistant vice president – Marketing of Foodland Supermarket Co., Ltd., said, “We hold a party like this every year to give thanks to our customers and business partners who have supported us throughout the year. At this party we also have our own products made by Foodland Supermarket: Europeanstyled sausages under Butcher’s Choice brand, bakery products from Oven Fresh, and international cuisines prepared by chefs from Took Lae Dee. “We also hold additional International Food and Beverage parties throughout the year in rotation at our other branches. However, for Pattaya we will be definitely seeing each other every year.” Supamit closes with plans for the future: “By this year’s end we will be opening three new branches to add to our current 16 branches. Also, we will be investing in a new distribution center to better serve our customers.”
This popular Irish pub on Second Road recently hosted an Italian wine tasting. Set on the front terrace of the pub next to the splendid wood-fired pizza oven it was a fun, gregarious evening of slurping, sipping and supping on the Mediterranean wines, canapés and gourmet pizzas. A flute of sparking Peranima Glera Cuvee kicked off the evening and was much appreciated by the assembled wine fans for its dry yet creamy fizziness. Parma ham and melon made perfect friends for this debut wine. Sensi Collezione Pinot Grigio 2013 followed. A light wine for easy summer drinking it proved another popular choice. Collezione Pinot Noir 2013 with its mediumbodied elements established firm friends to the freshly made tasty pizzas and pigs in blankets. The final pouring of the evening, a Sensi Collezione Sangiovese 2012 came out tops for many red wine buffs. With its rich taste, full body and lingering finish of vanilla and tobacco it made a splendid finale wine to another of Dicey Reilly’s splendid wine tastings. Check out Dicey Reilly’s website (www. diceyspub.com) for more events and news about their special meals including the extremely popular Sunday Carvery at only B.399 from 12 noon to 4 pm with live music.

Mick & Di SILVER LINING The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
A Moveable Feast “So look for the Silver Lining and find the sunny side of life!” Having succeeded in making The Glass House the beachside restaurant of choice for locals, tourists and visiting Bangkokians, the charming entrepreneurial husband and wife team, Attapol and Sukumarn Itthirattanakomol, have given birth to its sibling restaurant, Silver Lining. Be prepared to be wowed – this sophisticated new sister is unique both in concept and state-of-the-art architectural design. Situated on Wongamat Beach on the site of the new Zire residences, the restaurant possesses some of the family traits as at The Glass House, big comfy sofas on a pristine shoreline, but Silver Lining has been blessed with more sophistication and more urban chutzpah. Firstly the cuisine is Japanese and Italian, serving an eclectic mix which, although initially seems strange after flicking through the menu, it all seems perfectly logical in its synthesis. Combining two Thai favourite cuisines on one menu has surely to please. The brainchild behind this kitchen is the celebrity chef Thanintorn “Noom” Chanthawan. A gastro star in his own right after his successful appearance on the Thai version of Iron Chef. He has collaborated with many accomplished chefs from Michelinstarred restaurants and together with his chefery at the legendary Fat Duck and Zuma in the UK – his culinary pedigree precedes him. We arrived at 8 pm and took advantage of the buggy to whiz us down to the beach. Jazz music wafted in the air as we made our way to our comfy sofa seating overlooking the pristine sand. An air-conditioned area also beckons with Japanese antiques bedecking
Chef Nat
the walls and an inviting cocktail bar stocked to the gills with wines, spirits and artisanal sake brands. We launched our Silver Lining experience with a flask of warm sake to pair with a selection of the restaurant’s finest imported sashimi. Polar fresh cuts of glistening premium fish were laid before us. The delicate marbling of the tender fatty salmon was delicious, the rich buttery flavour of the Hamachi (yellowtail), the firm sweet texture of the Hotate (scallop), and the outstanding Hokkigai (surf clam) all live in our memories as the best sashimi this side of Japan. If sashimi is not your bag then head for the nigirizushi (which means handpressed) and order the selection of nine house specials (B.980) including octopus, mackerel, sea urchin and prawn. Individual prices start at only B.100 so mixing and matching needn’t be a costly exercise. Next to hit the table was sake
steamed clams with chili and garlic. Subtly delicious with the sweetest clams and a white misu broth, we loved it. Our next chosen dishes were soft shell crab (B.420) and rock shrimp tempura (B.250). The crisp battered crabs were intriguingly served on a bed of crushed potato mixed with avocado salsa and chili mayo. A quiet foray into Chef Noom’s world of fusion resulted in some interesting taste sensations. The rock shrimp tempura was served with tobiko (flying fish roe) mayo and dusted with wasabi powder and a striking Japanese hot spiced seasoning known as Togarashi. Stuffed baby squid is popular as is the signature sake steamed chicken and the Kochujan lamb cutlets (24 hours marinated with mirin and sake and then charcoal grilled), plus we saw oodles of “don” (rice bowls with chosen toppings) and soba (noodles) bowls steaming their way to our neighbour’s tables.
Nine o’clock arrived, and the air was filled with a dramatic musical piece by Vincent Belorgey (known as Kavinsky).Waiters hurried to and from advising us all to turn to look at the rear of the restaurant as “the show” was about to commence. J-Pop, Manzai their traditional stand-up comedy or a puppet show perhaps? No it was something even more spectacular, a unique phenomenon never before seen in Thailand. The architectural spectacle that I mentioned earlier is a moving restaurant. Yes, the glass roof and walls are based on iron runners which allow the rear portion to sedately move enclosing the outdoor area. Backed by the dramatic overture it was indeed a “moving” moment. No need to worry if there’s a downpour whilst dining al fresco, the automaton of Attapol and Sukumarn’s design will save you from the elements. This is quite an extraordinary happening and the buzzing and excitement from the diners was palpable. Prices at this extraordinary lifestyle destination are as luxurious or as little as you wish. The surrounding
panoramic views are sensational and the comfort cosy and cocooning. Plans are afoot to introduce a jazz band to the air-conditioned bar area in the near future so late night revelers can party till 2 am. As with the moveable feast above nothing is as it seems. The spaghetti Bolognese is made from Wagyu beef with a myriad of intense flavours including the final flambé of Mirin and whisky for a fiery finish. The seared tuna salad (B.320) is black pepper crusted with a dressing of Mirin, ginger, sake and that wonderful Japanese seasoning, Togarashi. Chef’s unique creative ideas and touches are evident throughout this inspired menu, so do visit Silver Lining soon and experience for yourself the sunny side of life.

THE BAY RESTAURANT at Dusit Thani Pattaya
The Dusit Thani Hotel is one of the doyennes of Pattaya’s hotels having graced its location in North Pattaya since 1987. The company now possesses a unique portfolio of luxury hotels across four main brands. It is always a pleasure to visit this elegant and most welcoming hotel and when we were asked to dine at their Bay Restaurant to review the new menu created by their newly appointed executive chef it was with great anticipation that we headed the nose of the car towards the Dolphin Roundabout. Located in an enviable position at the northern tip of the bay overlooking the sea and golden sands it is here that The Bay restaurant is sited adjacent to the swimming pools with panoramic views out over the ocean and mountains beyond. The restaurant itself was totally refurbished recently with modern on-trend muted colours and subtle lighting. The large wraparound terrace provides the perfect spot to enjoy the nighttime breezes but as the temperature was in the middle 30s on our visit we elected to sit in the cool interior.
The new executive chef, Jens Heier, hails from Germany and having honed his skills at several Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe he followed his passion for Asian cuisine and headed up brigades in South Korea, Vietnam, China and Thailand. His new position at the Dusit Thani Pattaya affords him the responsibility of overseeing all aspects of culinary operations at the hotel’s three restaurants, a gourmet bakery, two pool bars and two lounges plus the hotel’s successful outside catering business. Chef Jens unfortunately couldn’t be present on our visit but Sous-Chef Ekarat Boonsri charmingly hosted the evening between forays into the kitchen. We were to be served a tasting menu of the signature dishes newly created at The Bay. Before the serving began we tucked into the bread basket which we enjoyed with small servings of tomato salsa, tapenade and butter. The soup course was the opening dish and chef had chosen a “velvety” lobster bisque infused with Cognac (B.210++). Robust deep flavours of
MIXOLOG
the sea were offset by the distinctive flavour of Cognac making for a very satisfying spoonful. With this course we were drinking an excellent Robertson Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa. Next up was a classic Caesar salad (B.310++) but its presentation had been “deconstructed” contributing to its eye and palate appeal. Romaine lettuce had been artfully strewn across the plate with a rasher of crisp bacon, anchovy, two fronds of focaccia and a strong creamy dressing to pull the flavours together.
Truffle Prosecco risotto with Taleggio cheese (B.320++) followed. For lovers of this specialized rice dish this one is a dream. The Arborio rice had been cooked with a deft hand to a luxurious creamy texture but retaining the required “bite”. Grilled prawns with vegetables, toasted focaccia with garlic and lemon butter was another hit of the evening. Monstrous prawns, sweet and soft drenched in that garlicky citrus butter was just divine. The main course beckoned and we ordered a glass of Pinot Noir to accompany this Wagyu Osso Buco (B.690++). Osso buco means empty bones or hollow bones, which are not empty at all but filled with luscious bone marrow. The classic dish is of course with veal shank but here chef had used Wagyu beef for an extra overload of luxury. Slow cooked for three hours and served in a rich, robust gravy and accompanied by root vegetables it was sensational. The addition of the traditional gremolata, a heady mix of parsley, garlic and lemon zest added the final touch to this labour intensive dish. Main plates on the a la carte menu include the legendary Steak Fiorentina weighing in at 850 grams. This premier imported steak is served medium rare, brushed with rosemary sprigs and served with white beans. For fish lovers Snow fish Saltimbocca would fit the bill. Wrapped in Parma ham with sage and served with fresh green asparagus the fish benefits from the salty sweetness of the ham.

Dessert arrived in the form of a chilled glass globe containing sabayon flavoured with Amaretto, Grand Marnier and Peach with double churned vanilla ice cream (B.140++). Sabayon is the French name for zabaglione, a light mousselike Italian dessert that’s made by whisking eggs, sugar and white wine over gently boiling water until the eggs thicken. Doused with the added opulence of the liquors it was full of sweetness and as light as a cloud. Other desserts include tiramisu from Oreo cookies sprinkled with cacao dust, ricotta orange cheesecake with almond crisp, and panna cotta with mango, mint salad and chilli oil. The Bay is a most delightful restaurant set in a stunning location. The quality of the imported produce is superb and wherever possible local ingredients are sourced. Executive Sous-Chef Ekarat cooked us up a dream dinner; his cooking is clever, intricate and extremely tasty. The staff were professional and helpful and we left happy and replete.
In a cocktail shaker, muddle finely chopped lemongrass, lychees, lychee syrup and passion fruit until soft. Fill with crushed ice, vodka,
SangSom, lime juice and syrup. Shake well for 10 seconds or until all items are thoroughly mixed. Pour into glass then garnish.

fairness-fitness-finery Plastic surgery explained: Nasal surgery Vol. 03 No. 11 | Jun 1-15, 2015
by Thonglor Clinic
After the eyes, the nose is an important feature of your facial anatomy. Huge or distorted noses are quite unsettling to a lot of people. It is a question of proportions mainly but it is an issue encountered by lots of patients. Caucasian noses are quite often the envy of our Asian patients. Most Caucasians would have reconstruction to remove unsightly deviations or reduce the size of their noses. The opposite applies to our
Asian patients who often have very little button noses or show no nasal bridge. For patients who suffer from a deviated septum: the bone and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity of the nose in half—is significantly off center, or crooked, making breathing difficult. Most people have some sort of imbalance in the size of their breathing passages. In fact, estimates indicate that 80 percent of people, most unknowingly, have some sort of misalignment to their nasal septum. Only the more severe imbalances require treatment. Some people are born with a deviated septum. Other people develop a deviated septum after injury or trauma to the nose, often resulting from a fall or a sudden blow to the nose. The most common symptom of a deviated septum is nasal congestion, with one side of the nose being more congested than the other, along with difficulty breathing. Recurrent or repeated sinus infections can also be a sign of a deviated septum. A deviated septum may also cause sleep apnea. Sometimes symptoms of a deviated septum can be relieved with medications. If medicine alone doesn’t offer
adequate relief, a surgical procedure called septoplasty may be needed to repair a crooked septum and improve breathing. Surgery During septoplasty, a surgeon, working through the inside of the nose, makes a small incision in the septum and then removes the excess bone or cartilage required to even out the breathing space of the nostrils. Sometimes a rhinoplasty or “nose job” is combined with septoplasty to improve the appearance of the nose. This procedure is called septorhinoplasty. Surgery to repair a deviated septum is usually performed in an outpatient setting under local or general anesthesia (then requiring a night in the hospital by law) and takes about one to one and a half hours, depending on the amount of work being done. You should be able to go home three to four hours after surgery. Internal splints or soft packing material may be put in the nose to stabilize the septum as it heals. If a septoplasty is the only procedure performed, there should be little to no swelling or bruising after surgery. However, if a septorhinoplasty is performed, a week or two of swelling and bruising is normal following the procedure. For Asian patients, quite often a small silicone wedge is inserted during the surgery to raise the nose bridge. Quite often nose style is dictated
by fashion. Currently Korean style nose is in favor. Nostrils or nasal tip can also require some modifications. Many small alterations are possible. A personalized consultation with the surgeon will determine what needs to be done to achieve the result expected by the patient. Temporary approaches quite often mean to inject a hyaluronic filler to increase the nasal ridge. This only lasts 12 to 18 months, but is a cheaper alternative. In our older Caucasian patients we find the presence of small reddish veins exposed on and around the nose, sometimes associated with
excessive drinking and hard living. A treatment with a laser machine helps to shrink away these small vessels and rejuvenate the look. This again can be performed in the clinic as an outpatient. We encourage our patients to come in for a free consultation without obligation to discuss the possibilities that aesthetic medicine offers to them. Thonglor Clinic – Pattaya is conveniently situated on Thappraya Road facing the large tower of Pattaya Park. For more information or to book for a free consultation contact 038 252 055.

Tips for beautiful skin Blueberries, dark chocolate and sunscreen are three things you need to help keep your skin beautiful, supple and smooth. Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, dark chocolate, cantaloupe, citrus fruits and leafy greens provide the vitamins you need to maintain your skin’s elasticity. More importantly, avoid cigarettes and sunshine. Smoking contributes greatly to the premature aging of skin and other body parts. But the number-one way to keep skin gorgeous is to stay out of the sun. The sun’s radiation causes skin damage, including wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer. When you do go outdoors during daylight hours, use a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays in an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply often.

IN LOVE WITH DEATH By SATISH MODI 9781780272146 Death is the inevitable fate of every single person on earth. How do we accept the inevitability of our own death? How do we live our lives with meaning? Will money lead us to happiness? Satish Modi examines these questions in a moving, powerful, thought-provoking work based on his own reflections as well as the experiences of people from all walks of life. The result is a fascinating book that teaches us that whoever we are and whatever our aspirations in this life, it is important for each and every one of us to accept our own passing. In doing so we can free ourselves to live as well and fully as possible, guided by the principles of goodness, love and compassion.
Age spots or liver spots Whether you are a farang or a Thai, woman or man, as the years mount so too do brown spots on your skin. These discolorations of up to an inch in diameter may be solar lentigos. But not to worry, they are merely “age spots” that result from years of sun exposure. Age spots, sometimes called “liver spots,” typically appear on the chest, face, or—more commonly—the back of the hands; areas of the skin that have been most exposed to the sun throughout your lifetime. The best ways to prevent age spots are to avoid sun exposure, especially sunbathing, and use sunscreen regularly (SPF 15 or higher). However, this won’t help get rid of age spots you may already have. To reduce the appearance of age spots over time, see your physician or dermatologist, or visit a skin care clinic for advice and perhaps a prescription or over-the-counter skin cream containing alpha-hydroxy or retinoic acid. If you use these, be diligent about applying sunscreen, since these creams can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun’s rays. Laser treatment is also an effective option offering immediate results, though it is more costly. Even if your age spots are not a concern, it is advisable to see a skin specialist about them. Occasionally, what appear to be age spots are identified as precancerous lesions that should be removed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.

The New NISSAN
Crossover Brings Back
the X-Trail Factor
by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com
Nissan X-Trail 3rd generation compact SUV shifts up. New styling, powertrain upgrade and tons of features. Some years ago. The writing was on the wall and a major change; makeover was needed for Nissan’s compact SUV because the old Nissan X-Trail lacked the looks. That old boxy, square and frumpy design did not fly. Jump forward to 2015. Pattaya Today Automotive tests the new Nissan X-Trail 2.0L 4WD. The third generation X-Trail is an all-new vehicle, right down to its chassis boasting a completely new design language with eye-catching curvaceous body, high bulging wheel arches and front grille makeover: the bold V-shaped front grille: “V-motion”, Nissan calls it. Also note the cool boomerang-shaped LED daytime running headlights. At the wheel the first impression, premium quality. The piano black finishes and the soft touch double-stitched leather, power front seats and a center armrest contrasts against the aluminum/carbon trim. For the passengers there’s plenty of legroom in the 5 + 2 theatre layout seating. In the ceiling a magnificent full-length panoramic sunroof. Or maybe we call it a moonroof. Then for the driver, a leather clad, multi-function, thick steering wheel. The dashboard center boasts a 7-inch screen loaded with GPS navigation system, integrated Bluetooth, the apps. Remember, years ago when only imported premium sedans came with a start/stop push button. For the rest of us it was the old turn-the-ignition-key routine. Every time. Boooring! These days if you buy a car look
for the start/stop engine button. It will make your life easier. The X-Trail has also a user-friendly auto lift (trunk) gate with sensors, so you can open it without using your hands. Inside there’s enough cargo space, circa 1,000 liters with third row seats folded down. Pop the hood and in the engine bay you’ll find a 144 hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol motor linked to an Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic with seven-speed manual override. On the steering column paddleshifters with (+) upshifting and (-) downshifting function designed for active driving. Just like them Alonso, Hamilton and Rosberg Formula One drivers. Let’s go! Reversing the X-Trail out from
a tight parking lot. Piece of cake with four cameras providing a 360-degree view or in Nissan parlance: Around View Monitor or helicopter view. On the drive to Kanchananburi mountainous hinterland the X-Trail accelerates, overtakes and brakes with gusto. Commanding view. Pure pleasure to drive. Plenty of power delivery to all four wheels through the 4WD system. When climbing up the steep serpentine to the Burmese border, at Three Pagodas Pass our Nissan X-Trail handles like a sedan thanks to front and rear stabilizers and the vehicle dynamic control (VDC). Safety comes with dual front airbags and side airbags. On the way back downhill a little off-roading. The X-Trail’s 210 mm ground clearance, hill-start assist, hill descent control and four-wheel drive makes this Nissan fully soft off-road capable. The new Nissan X-Trail is definitely a challenger in the rapidly growing crossover segment. Ready to take on the competition. Offering value packages with a starting price for base model 2.0L 2WD 1,172,000 baht to top spec 2.5L 4WD model at 1,551,000. Many a Nissan have I driven; NV station wagon, Teana saloon, Navara pickup truck and Nissan March (badged as Micro in Europe) eco-car. However, this new, handsome, premium kitted X-Trail family crossover impresses me. I tick all the boxes and think about Nissan’s tagline: “Innovation that excites”. Yes! Considering buying a new crossover? Head for one of Nissan’s showrooms throughout the Kingdom. Nissan X-Trail CTV 4WD Engine: 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol (E20 compatible) Horsepower: 144 horsepower Torque: 200 Nm Transmission: CTV Automatic Top speed: 180 kph Fuel consumption: Combined 14.2 kpl Price: 1,325,000 baht www.nissan.co.th

The high deposit policy and strong marketing to Thai and Chinese audiences has protected the company from a recent reduction in Russian visitors to Pattaya. A recent road show to Beijing saw sales higher than expected, with Chinese investors buying to take advantage of the central location for rental. Raimon Land continues to lead in the Thai luxury residential market evidenced by the sale of one of the penthouses at 185
Rajadamri at the highest recorded price per square meter in Thailand. With the upcoming integration between ASEAN and China, the company expects to see growing demand for high-end developments from both Thai and international buyers, particularly Chinese, due to Thailand’s attractive pricing within the region. Raimon Land has also been completing transfers for their Zire Wongamat development, recently
opening the Silver Lining Restaurant for both public and Zire owners to enjoy. The company has revealed plans for new developments in 2015, including Mews Yen Akat by Raimon Land, an exclusive landed housing estate in the Sathorn central business district, and The Lofts Asoke, a prime freehold site of almost 2 rai near MRT subway, BTS skytrain and airport link, beginning pre-sales late this year.

QROPS – GIBRALTAR SHINES
by Magna Carta Law Office
Thailand Retirement Visa What is Thailand retirement visa? Thailand retirement visa is obtainable by anyone age 50 or older, regardless of nationality, who has the financial capacity to settle in Thailand. A retirement visa is actually an extension of an original non-immigrant single or multiple-entry O or B type visa.
Does this mean we, as foreign couples, are required to submit evidence of a total of at least 1.6M baht in our Thai bank accounts? Since you are required to have individual bank accounts, it is imperative that you have at least 800,000 baht in each account.
How do I qualify for a retirement visa? You can qualify to be granted a retirement visa if: 1. You are 50 years of age or older; and 2. You have obtained a temporary non-immigrant visa; and 3. You have a proof of ongoing source of income, such as pension, of not less than 65,000 baht per month; or 4. You have an account deposit with a bank in Thailand of not less than 800,000 baht as evidenced by bank account transactions over the previous two months (three months for subsequent extensions); or 5. You have an annual income plus bank account deposit totalling not less than 800,000 baht as of the application filing date
Can I apply for a retirement visa outside Thailand? You can start the retirement visa procedure outside Thailand, most preferably from your home country, by obtaining a non-immigrant visa which will be valid for 90 days from the date of entry. A non-immigrant visa can be extended or converted to a one-year retirement visa in Thailand during the last 30 days of your permitted stay. The 90-day validity of your nonimmigrant visa shall give you enough time to deposit in a Thai bank the required amount of money which must be reflected for two months in the bank transaction certificate upon your visa application.
What are the required documents in applying for a retirement visa? - Passport with validity of not less than 18 months - Completed visa application forms - Three passport-sized photos (4x6cm) of the applicant taken within the last six months - A copy of a bank statement or income letter (original) or a bank deposit plus a monthly income totalling not less than the minimum financial requirement per year. - Original letter of guarantee from the bank, if a bank statement is issued. Could the foreign husband and wife use a bank account with their combined name for this purpose? No, the bank account name must be only that of the particular applicant.
What are the restrictions that I have to consider while I am holding a retirement visa? You will be permitted to stay in Thailand for one year from the date your retirement visa is granted. You are strictly prohibited from having employment while on this type of visa. You must report to the Immigration officer in your area of residence every 90 days during your stay in Thailand. During this period, if you wish to leave and re-enter the country, you are required to apply for and obtain re-entry permit (single or multiple) at the Immigration Office before leaving the country. If you leave without a re-entry permit, the retirement visa will become invalid. Is a one-year retirement visa renewable? A retirement visa may be renewed annually at the Thai Immigration Office. If you wish to renew your retirement visa, you must do so approximately two weeks before the expiry date on your visa stamp and you have to show the same documents as required in your first application. Remember, however, that the Immigration Office, at their discretion, can ask for additional documentation. I am eligible to apply for a retirement visa but as my wife is under 50 years of age; what type of visa can she obtain? If your spouse is not eligible to apply for a retiree visa, she must obtain prior to entry into Thailand a non-immigrant O Visa which may also be extended for a period of one year by submitting an application to the Immigration Department, stating as her purpose “to stay with the family”. A notarized marriage certificate must be provided as evidence together with other documents and financial requirements.
The terms of the QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) offering from Gibraltar allow for retirement income to be drawn commencing at age 55 and there is no Gibraltar withholding tax on payment of PCLS (Pension Commencement Lump Sum). Also, the tax rate applied to all retirement income paid is only 2.5 percent. The pension fund can be used by the member for his lifetime and any remaining balance can be passed on to his heirs upon the member’s death without any deduction of tax at source in Gibraltar or, indeed, inheritance tax for expatriates. Investments can be invested and paid in any major currency. On 22 June 2012, the long-awaited introduction of a new Gibraltar tax legislation under Section 14 was passed in Parliament and came into operation on 28 June 2012. Highly regulated and transparent On 31 August 2012, the Gibraltar operators received clear HMRC acceptance of Gibraltar QROPS. The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (FSC) follows the same guidelines and principles as the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), formerly named the Financial Services Authority. All fiduciary entities including banks, trust companies and other regulated businesses are monitored and registered with the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (FSC). The Gibraltar Association of Pension Fund Administrators (GAPFA) was formed in 2009 to ensure that operators carried out the highest standards of professional compliance. Transfer to schemes in Gibraltar must, by law, carry equivalent or more stringent terms than other jurisdictions to be permitted. In addition, GAPFA is currently finalising its Code of Practice to ensure absolute clarity over QROPS business, which has been lacking in some of the other jurisdictions. Since 2004 the Finance Centre Department continues to compile Gibraltar’s portfolio investment position for submission to the IMF. Gibraltar was reviewed by the Financial Action Task Force and classified as a cooperative jurisdiction in June 2000. The Government of Gibraltar submitted a letter of commitment to transparency and effective exchange of information in 2002 and its approach has consistently been one of constructive dialogue with the OECD. There are a number of HMRC approved schemes and fees and terms vary from provider to provider so an independent review of individual circumstances should be undertaken. Autonomous government as European Union member Gibraltar is a self-governing parliamentary democracy. It joined the European Union in 1973 under Article 299 (4) of the treaty. Being under the dependency of the UK, all EU legislation is separately adopted into Gibraltar law. This therefore gives the advantage of providing a firm EU based business and legal infrastructure. Straight and clear tax treatment Gibraltar has no double tax treaties with any country but offers a low tax regime for both residents and non-residents. Pension drawdown for imported pensions is taxed at 2.5 percent and there is no inheritance or death tax. Thailand Property Awards 2015 Judges Scoring Soon! The Thailand Property Awards nominations for the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Condominium Development and Best Villa Development were submitted between January 1 and April 17 with the nominated developments submitting their entry forms up until May 29. No worries if you are a few days late as we will not begin our local site visits until after June 15, when our Central and Regional judges meet in Bangkok. Yes, once again we are quickly approaching the eagerly-awaited annual event that recognizes the residential sector’s leading real estate professionals, property developers, interior designers, and architects. Along with this year’s Best Villa and Best Condo Developments for the Eastern Seaboard we also have nominations and entries for Eastern Seaboard developments for the Best in Thailand category for Best Developer, Best Boutique Developer, Best Commercial Development (Retail), Best Commercial Development (Hotel), Best Residential Architectural Design, Best Hotel Architectural Design, Best Residential Interior Design, Best Green Development, and Special Recognition in CSR The last eight yearly events have established these awards as the highest symbol of achievement that a company or an individual can receive in Thailand’s residential, commercial and hospitality real estate industries. Having said that, you might ask how these awards are decided and what is the process that produces them. In the Development Awards category, a central and regional panel of 14 judges—each a respected industry professional— examines and scores each nominee and then makes the initial short-lists of five properties for each development category. Next, the regional panel heads and their appointed judging teams inspect all of the nominees in their region. Along with the Eastern Seaboard’s regional head panel judge and organizer Clayton Wade and honorary judge Pongstorn Sangruchi, the Eastern Seaboard judges include Mark Bowling of Colliers International (Pattaya) as well as some new faces. Four local real estate professionals are being groomed and will be submitted to Terry Blackburn of Ensign Media (organizers) and Paul Ashburn of BDO Advisory (judging supervisor) for approval.

Sheraton Pattaya Resort moving into a new decade Looking forward to the next 10 years! Open since 2005 and still the only elite Starwood-group hotel in Pattaya, the luxury Sheraton Pattaya Resort has always been a success with tourists, expats and locals. Built around the coast by Phra Tamnak Hill with stunning sunset views overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the location offers a perfect mix of convenience and seclusion with expansive grounds whilst connecting to the popular tourist sites locally in a matter of minutes.
D
esigned in a contemporary classic style, the resort has a touch of colonial ambience about it with large windows and balconies and warm wood interiors. The 156 rooms offer the latest facilities and technologies whilst the facilities are truly comprehensive with three separate outdoor swimming pools, onsite spa with signature
treatments, fitness centre and lavish international dining options which include romantic beachfront dining. “To celebrate our 10th birthday,” says Thansita Sirapastuwanon, the sales and marketing director better known as Cartoon, “we are in the midst of a major room refurbishment which includes the establishment of 20 family suites which illustrate the changing customer profile
in top Pattaya hotels. There are also various enhancements to the lavish restaurants.” She took up her current post last February and brings with her 18 years of experience within the hospitality industry. Naturally, the Sheraton Pattaya Resort has seen many changes in the local hospitality industry over the past 10 years. “There are so many more attractions out there these days,” says Cartoon, citing
Thansita Sirapastuwanon Director of Sales & Marketing the recently opened Cartoon Network Amazone water park amongst other innovations catering largely to families. She adds that Pattaya today is a far more sophisticated city than the old-fashioned stereotype of bars, clubs and nightlife. Pattaya, one of Asia’s largest beach destinations, now offers water sports, land sports including go-karting, bungee jumping,
Yaowapha Sankong Complex Director of Revenue Management parasailing and golf. “Here at Sheraton Pattaya Resort,” explains Cartoon, “we are catering for the five-star brand tourist and business market. Our clientele these days shows a growing emphasis on Asian nationalities, although the Europeans, the Australians and the Americans are still represented. GM Outlook ASEAN Economic Community, a 10-nation free-trade grouping which formally comes into being at the beginning of 2016. But our aim, as always, is to meet and exceed customer expectations wherever they are from.” The best evidence for this latter sentiment is to check the social media and the customer feedback on TripAdvisor and other sites. Of over 700 reviews on TripAdvisor, the overwhelming majority categorize the Sheraton Pattaya Resort as excellent or very good. Unsurprisingly, it figures in the top handful of hotels as measured by guests. In fact, all forms of customer feedback are monitored rigorously by the senior management team as an exercise in self-improvement. Another new arrival in the senior management at Sheraton Pattaya Resort is Yaowapha “Yao” Sankong who is complex director of revenue management here and at W Retreat Koh Samui. She has a passion for revenue management and has extensive experience and knowledge working for a series of international hotel groups maximizing the turnover in accordance with company strategies and customer needs. At the resort Yao is in charge of the revenue management’s function in order to optimize hotel revenue with a great tool of revenue optimization system (ROS) which is the application of disciplined analytics online that predict consumer behaviour at the micro-market level and optimize product availability and price to maximize revenue growth. The primary aim of ROS is selling the right product to the right customer at the right time for the right price and with the right pack. The essence of the discipline
Here at Sheraton Pattaya Resort, our aim, as always, is to meet and exceed customer expectations. is an understanding of customers’ perception of product value and accurately aligning product prices, placement and availability with each customer segment. A market segment of growing importance in the revenue of five-star hotels in Pattaya, and indeed Thailand as a whole, is MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions). The resort has first-class facilities including a main ballroom which can comfortably accommodate 200 people. In fact the hotel has a growing number of corporate clients, both Thai and international, and new initiatives such as catering for Indian weddings and hosting conferences for professionals are always being planned. The overall success of Sheraton Pattaya Resort in the past 10 years is also a reflection of the policies adopted by central government and Pattaya City Hall. The Eastern Seaboard has developed so spectacularly in recent years as regards the establishment of five-star hotels, malls, restaurants, entertainment and sports outlets that its facilities now rival those of Bangkok. Although many problems remain in the city, especially as regards transport infrastructure,
City Hall has set its goal on becoming the upscale Thai Riviera by the end of this decade.
Sheraton Pattaya Resort is in an ideal position to help achieve that aim.

Our Community Pattaya Cares for Nepal by Derek Franklin It is estimated that almost 9,000 people from Nepal and the neighbouring countries of China, India and Bangladesh lost their lives in the two earthquakes that hit the Himalayan country in April and May. Foreign nationals from the as far afield as the UK and New Zealand also succumbed to the disaster. Tens of thousands have been injured and the number of
been left with injuries and disabilities that may never heal. Countries around the world have sent food, medical supplies, tents, blankets, relief workers as well as search and rescue experts. Thailand has donated more than half a million US dollars to the aid effort. It has also sent medical and rescue workers and now the people of Pattaya have come
those left homeless is likely to be in the hundreds of thousands; whole villages have been wiped off the map. Children have become orphans and others have
to the support of the people of Nepal. A suggestion from one young resident at the Father Ray Children’s Home to help the children of Nepal
grew into an event which took place one Saturday evening on Walking Street. From that one idea grew ‘Pattaya Cares for Nepal’, an evening of musical entertainment. Teenagers from the Children’s Home, blind students and young adults with disabilities performed a selection of pop and rock songs which had many people dancing in the street. The evening started with a rendition of ‘We Are the World’, the 1985 charity single originally performed by the likes of Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Traditional Thai dancers, Muay Thai fighters and the choir from the School for the Blind
drew large crowds which caused Walking Street to come almost to a standstill. Earlier in the day the young adults studying at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities, many of whom are living on a pension of 500 baht per month, all made a donation and the residents of the Children’s Home gave a donation from their pocket money. Local Thais, expats and holidaymakers all dipped deep into their pockets to make a donation, and all money raised will go to help support the Nepalese children and people with disabilities affected by the recent disaster.

Youth Focus Foundation Playground Gets Massive Makeover by Mark Beales The youngest children at Garden International School (GIS) are enjoying a whole range of new play equipment. As part of the school’s first stage of its playground redevelopment, a new castle, bike path and rocket have arrived.
Head of Foundation, Jane Vincent, said: “When designing the playground we were interested not only in giving the children a broader range of gross motor play opportunities but also in giving them the chance to use their imaginations, inspired by the equipment in the playground. “At the moment in the
top playground we have two large pieces of equipment: a castle and a rocket. There is a 65-metre bike path which goes all the way around the playground, giving the children ample opportunity to enjoy and interact with their friends, stopping at the car parks to extend their play as they choose.
“We are still in the process of including other opportunities for play such as rowing boats and tunnels on the bike path in this top playground. There is also new astroturf inside the bike track and under the new equipment.” Mark Beales is IB Coordinator and English Teacher at Garden International School

Youth Focus Exciting Creatures All animals are fascinating creatures and bats are no exception! The Year 1-2 ‘Owl’
class has been reading and discussing bats in theme and literacy this half term and
by Sandra Haeberli
has been quite fascinated by these amazing animals! The children have learned many interesting facts and myths about bats, one of the facts being that bats are mammals and the only mammals that can fly! The children were very excited about the vampire bat, of course, since this bat is probably the one with the most associated myths! The children were given an assignment to research a particular bat to find out its habitat, its enemies, where in the world it lives, what it eats and how it locates its food. They also had to find out other interesting things about their bat that maybe we didn’t know! The children took great pride in their assignment and brought back beautifully written papers full of interesting information. Some children even drew their own colourful pictures to go along
with their report or attached photos of their bat. Our next exciting creature to learn about is the owl! This animal is our class mascot and we will see if Year 1-2 class has anything in common! Sandra Haeberli is a teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.
Reading Changes Lives by Peter Hartnell
Nobody underestimates the importance of reading. It enriches and empowers us. A book is a little piece of magic that allows us to travel through time and space. A book allows us to get inside the minds, to relive the experiences and to understand the motivation of diverse peoples in all sorts of imaginable and unimaginable situations. What would life be like without bedtime stories? Most of us remember our earliest encounters with books as a kind of unadulterated pleasure. Especially tucked up in a warm bed with a parent sitting beside you, gradually revealing the jealousy of wicked queens, the
cunning of numerous wolves, the just intervention of a benign fairy godmother and the final resolution, when the villain gets his just deserts. Who cannot remember how formative
those first experiences of evil, excitement and fear were. Later we learn to read for ourselves and read not only for pleasure but to satisfy the gnawing curiosity we have about the world. We are fascinated by the facts we learn about countries, history, plants and animals. When we are young and we read or hear inspiring stories we are changed. Our personalities as well as our general knowledge and understanding of the human condition begin to develop, and just as our character, our values and our hopes and aspirations grow, so do our hearts and our empathy for those suffering in the world. We develop a sense of justice, a love for equality. Last week Tara Pattana International School held its annual Book Week. Based on the theme “Connect to Reading” our intention was to try to forge links between the things that our students read and what they know, feel, and think. We tried to encourage them to identify connections between what they read and their own and others’ lives, and by reflecting on and analysing the authors themes and purposes to gain a deeper insight into the power that reading has to change lives.
Of course, much of the real meaning of reading is simply the pleasure that it gives us all, no matter how old or how young. We organized all sorts of engaging activities during the week includinga well-attended “Read-a-thon”, where parents of our younger children were invited in to participate in reading activities with their children and a competitive “Spelling Bee”. We had a handwriting competition, a “Battle of the Brains” where students competed to find out who had the best knowledge of famous children’s books. Our older students wrote and read to the school their own individual interpretations of well-known “Hairy Tales and Nursery Crimes” and we had a bookworm competition to see how many books children could read and write book reviews of in a week.
During morning assemblies the head teacher and many members of staff told the students about their own favourite books and why they liked them. We had a famous children’s writer Janice Santikarn, author of “The Brave Little Tuk-Tuk”, “Koko the Monkey: Lost in Bangkok”, “Nawin Saves the Elephants” and several other well-known books, spend a day at the school explaining her craft and helping the students write poems. We had a book sale and inevitably, the highlight of the week, a book character costume parade. Every morning, ever since I started teaching at Tara Pattana International School I have read a chapter of a classic children’s book to my class. My love of reading is still with me, and I hope I have managed to pass some of that pleasure onto others. Peter Hartnell is head teacher at Tara Pattana International School.
GIS Helps Nepal
Students from Garden International School (GIS) have raised thousands of baht for the Nepalese earthquake victims after holding a mufti day and hot dog lunch. A hot dog lunch held by the Student Council raised around 15,000 baht, a popcorn day brought in 5,000 baht, and a mufti day and other donations amassed more than 62,000 baht. Money raised will be sent to a Nepalese international school, which

recently visited GIS as part of the FOBISIA Games (Federation of British International Schools in Asia), which will then help victims of the recent earthquakes that have claimed more than 8,000 lives. More fundraisers are planned by the kind-hearted and internationally-minded students. Mark Beales is IB Coordinator and English Teacher at Garden International School.

Poon and Queen played a total of 72 holes in three days (On day two, they played two rounds in the morning and the afternoon). Poon shot one under par (73-71-70-73) and Queen shot an amazing 18-under par (71-65-71-63). Queen even made a hole-inone on the 114-yard Par 3 during the final round! That means they both

Pattamapawn “Pem” Suchard is a little 9-year-old Thai girl and Pattaya Archery Club’s newest and youngest member. After just three lessons with Eric Hearn, the club’s coach, Pem shot her first ever ‘gold’ (archery’s equivalent of the ‘bull’ for guns) at 18 metres. She was over the moon, as well may be expected. A great achievement for so young a child, and one so petite as well. The club’s training bow was bigger than she is, and although the arrows were the shortest in the club’s extensive collection of arrows for learners, they were too long for her little arms. She looked a bit overwhelmed by the bow, but quickly understood the coach’s advice, and soon developed a good technique … as evidenced by her ‘gold.’ A quick learner. The club has two other 11-year-old archers (a Brit and a Russian) and a 14-year-old Australian as well. All three are boys, so Pem is the club’s only current girl archer. She had a teddy bear motive on her dress, but we don’t expect the same for the boys! There have been several young girl archers in the club in the past but all were taken by their parents to live either in the UK or New Zealand. Good archers those girls were, too. Maybe they will qualify for their country’s archery team in a few years. Conventional archery theory believes that very young children do not have the mental staying power and self-control to succeed in the sport. Most of the world’s top archers are in their 20s and 30s, and many have been shooting since their early teens. So Pem has a head start. Pem is very sensible for her age and is extremely keen to shoot ‘her’ club bow. So maybe she’ll shoot for Thailand’s archery team in the years to come. She certainly has all the right ingredients to succeed in the sport. In contrast, the club’s oldest member is the coach, who is 72 years of age and still shooting which illustrates the attraction of the sport to all ages. Most archery club members are retired

farangs in their 50s and 60s, although there are several younger members who are still working and have to fit their archery around their work commitments. Trying archery in Pattaya Pattaya Archery Club meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 10 am and finishing about noon. Anyone ─ Thai or farang, young or old, man or woman ─ is welcome to come along to the Pattaya Shooting and Adventure Park in Hua Yai and find out what it is all about. Beginners’ coaching is held on any of the club’s meeting days. The coach’s services and the use of the club’s bows, arrows and other equipment are free for beginners, and so it costs nothing to see if this challenging sport is for you. PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society Takeshi &Thientong Have A Pleasant Day! With five groups on the starting sheet we headed off to Pleasant Valley on this fine and hot Monday morning and welcomed back Tony Cook and Lorraine Percy from Australia along with local newcomers Ying and Pancake. Our first group got away just a few minutes before our scheduled 10:05 am tee time and with no one in sight ahead of us we proceeded at a good pace. The golf course was not in as good shape as it usually is with some very ordinary greens and your writer did struggle adapting to things after my recent laser eye surgery but had an enjoyable day anyway with good company. With no holdups we managed to complete our round in three hours and 50 minutes.
In the men’s flight it was Takeshi Hakozaki who stole the show and won with a fine 38 points while also winning all three novelty awards. That man Christian Boysen was once again on the podium and finished second with 34 points and Lionel Rowles took out third spot with 31 points. With several ladies in the field we had a separate ladies flight, which was well won by Thientong Charoenrung who scored an excellent 39 points. You & Your Pets You probably are aware of health measures related to you and your family, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions.
Human Topical Creams Household pets face a danger from human topical creams, it’s been reported by the US Food and Drug Administration. In light of this safety alert from the FDA, it’s important to make sure that you are armed with the latest information to keep your furry friends safe. Compounded topical creams (or ointments) may contain common and potent ingredients known as NSAIDs— nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac and flurbiprofen, among others. These ingredients are commonly found in creams used to relieve sore joints and muscles in humans and can be toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion of even the smallest amount of human topical cream can lead to serious issues, especially in cats. After applying such products, do not allow your
dog or cat to lick your skin; even slight exposure can be dangerous. Typical signs of exposure include: • Lethargy • Vomiting • Anemia • Acute Kidney Failure • Death Remember that topical products are still considered human medication, which is now the number one cause of poisoning among household pets. Keep all such medications away from your pets. In the event that a pet comes into contact with one of these products, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Bill and Ben
These two handsome and friendly brothers did go to a new home together last year, but sadly their owner had to go away and couldn't take them with him. So they are back here waiting to be chosen again.
Toby
This fine-looking young man sadly has no eyes but please don't think that that hinders him at all. He can run and play just like all the other cats here. His new home would have to have a secure garden for him to play in.
Visa
This handsome boy has been with us for a while now, he was rescued from the grounds of Pattaya Immigration, hence the name. He is very shy of strangers but is very loving as soon as he gets to know you; a patient new owner will be needed for him.
Diabetes has been reported in horses, ferrets, and ground squirrels. In environments where animals are liberally fed, diabetes has been reported in dolphins, foxes, and even a hippopotamus.
Ginger Nutz
The African Black Eagle typically will lay two eggs. After they hatch, the mother will just feed one of the chicks. The other chick is usually pecked to death by the other chick while the mother looks on.
This happy, healthy-looking, big ginger boy has been with us for what seems to be ages. Sadly he is such a big boy now he is not always on the normal "shopping list" of the average adopter who invariably chooses his younger friends before him.
Cat Corner Tip Ready to play? The animal that gives birth to the largest baby on Earth is a mother elephant. After enduring 22 months of pregnancy, she gives birth to a blind, 200-pound calf
Going to the Dogs... Our dogs will love and admire the meanest of us, and feed our colossal vanity with their uncritical homage.
~Agnes Repplier
Cats love to play, and play is an important component in socializing your kitten. You also want to do object play. The five games to teach young cats are mouse, bird, lizard, rabbit, and bug. Go out and buy some practical learning tools in each category. For example, find something that looks like a bird and pretend it’s a bird. That is, have the item fly around, land, take off, etc., in much the same way a bird would. Or get a laser pointer (readily available from sidewalk hawkers around Pattaya) and pretend it’s a bug; ape the bug’s common actions with the pointer. The mistake most people make is they buy these toys for play, but they don’t mimic the animal’s actions when playing. Important too: Allow the cat to win sometimes. Put a treat under the toy and let your cat pounce on the pretend mouse or gecko and eat the treat. It’s no fun to lose all the time.
