Pattaya’s Chinese Future T he current dependence on Chinese tourists, especially in Pattaya, has now started a hot debate about the future of Thai tourism.

About one foreign tourist in five in the country as a whole is Chinese, producing a total of 4.6 million travellers from the communist giant. Some research has suggested that, although only one percent of Chinese nationals have so far visited Thailand, about 50 percent would like to do so.

The Chinese growing arrivals are fuelled by expanding budget-air routes which make a vacation much cheaper.

The scheduled mega-expansion of U-Tapao airport, near Rayong, is expected within two years to lead to many more charter flights from Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese population centres. Although there are already many complaints in both Bangkok and Pattaya about oversized tour buses filled with Chinese tourists clogging up highways and streets, civic authorities are reluctant to do anything

about the problem because these tourists are bringing much-needed revenue into the country.

Or are they? The vast majority of Chinese visitors are “zero tourists�, that is they pay for the entire holiday in advance in China and are dragooned by the tour operators who design all their

activities on a virtual 24-hour basis, including where they sleep, eat and shop. Some travel commentators believe that the tourists are being ripped-off in all sorts of ways and that the inflated money they spend, for example on souvenirs and entrance fees, benefits only a small number of Thai operators.

There has been some evidence that the Chinese tourists with their children are even herded into sex shows, whether they want to or not, because such a visit is on their obligatory programme. Last year the Tourist Police received Continued on page 4

News Tour guides demand crackdown

A group of 100 Thai tour guides gathered on Pattaya Beach Road and marched to City Hall to end the unlawful activities of Chinese, Russian, Indian and Vietnamese tour guides who have been working without permits and threatening the livelihood of

the Thais. It was reported that a scuffle had broken out between the hostile group and a Chinese guide who happened to come back from Koh Larn. One of the problems is believed to be that not enough Thai guides can speak foreign languages fluently.

Chinese tourist robbed

Foreigners from the Middle East are believed responsible for stealing 3,700 yuan (20,000 baht) from a Chinese visitor in a convenience store on Naklua Road. Jiaqi Xu, 23, was approached by the group of four who offered her a very good exchange rate for US dollars. Checking her money later, Jiaqi discovered she had been the victim of a rip-off. Police said they would have a look at the appropriate CCTV cameras to see if they yielded anything of interest.

On the same night, two ladyboys, Thai and Cambodian, robbed a Japanese tourist on Pattaya Beach Road of 5,000 baht when his wallet was stolen. Koichi Ikari, 43, said he had been set up when one of the transvestites pretended to kiss him whilst the other was busy searching for the all-important wallet. Although the two ladyboys managed to escape on a motorbike, vigilant locals noted the number and the villains were apprehended later as they were counting their ill-gotten gains.

Violent teen quarrel in mall Police rushed to the Royal Garden Plaza after a fight involving about 10 teens of both sexes broke out. Apparently, the dispute broke out when Jai Kamsaen was accused of behaving dishonorably towards a nubile female. He was chased round the mall and was stabbed once (not seriously) by an unknown person.

Security staff at the mall said order was restored very quickly.

Man shot his male lover

British expat Colin Thomas Gardiner, 68, was shot dead through the neck in front of an apartment block in South Pattaya.

Police later apprehended the murderer, Teeradate Kakrong,

aged 33, who explained that the Brit was forever criticizing his lifestyle which included smoking and drinking. In any case, their relationship had broken down some months previously.

Casino spin again Every few years, a group of publicity-hungry politicians raises the hoary old question of establishing lawful casinos in Thailand. This time around there’s a new suggestion – that Pattaya, and only Pattaya, should be the centre for whoopee. Indeed, there are all sorts of rumours flying around town that certain hotels have already imported gaming tables and ancillaries and are ready to open shop at the drop of a hat. Commentators on social media are already proclaiming that the arrival of casinos is just the ticket to put Pattaya on its feet again, revive the sluggish property market and send the cash tills ringing all over the Eastern Seaboard. Ready when you are.

Cold water But steady on there. The current proposal, put forward by a group of non-elected members of the junta-installed parliament, is no different than many others over the years which have bitten the dust. Firstly, Buddhist teachings say that gambling is a sin and nothing is going to change that any time soon. It’s true that there is a national lottery and gambling is permitted on selected horse racing in Bangkok, but they are the exceptions which prove the rule so to speak. It is something of a paradox that the establishment of casinos is being touted by supporters and nominees of a right-wing coup rather than by left-wing liberals, but it doesn’t make any difference. The powers-that-be are never going to allow the fundamental change in thinking which would be required.

Who benefits?

Amongst the many problems to be straightened out before any casinos surface in Thailand, or even just in Pattaya, is who will run them and take the profits. It is always assumed that the huge profits – most casino visitors will lose – will go towards improving the lot of the urban and rural poor or building urgently-needed new roads or railway lines. But there is no evidence from other countries which have legalized gambling that this is necessarily so. The main beneficiaries may prove to be those running the gambling dens. Hun Sen, the prime minister of Cambodia, said recently that he hated casinos and all they stood for. The only reason he had allowed them on Cambodian soil at the land border with Thailand was to prove beyond all doubt that this land did belong to Cambodia and to prevent his larger neighbour moving around the marker pegs in an attempt to justify land grabbing. You can’t argue once a building is erected, he reasoned.

Thai conundrum It is an open secret that Thais love to gamble. The evidence is overwhelming. Senior policemen have lost their jobs after secret dens of iniquity were exposed in their jurisdiction. In Pattaya, a few years ago, skydiving police descended on a pleasure boat in Pattaya bay after hearing reports that blackjack was in full swing. Nothing was found, but the story is well-remembered by seasoned expats. But there are weekly reports of gambling groups being broken up by the police in Pattaya. The customers flee in every direction, but the organizers and a selection of punters pay a small fine in court before going back to their old haunts. Last year, a suspicious house in South Pattaya did indeed contain 20 gamblers playing roulette. But the bets must have been very small as a mere 25 baht was taken into custody by the enforcers of the law. One suspects that, in spite of a few sackings, many police are happy with the status quo on the gambling front.

International lessons It’s often claimed that other countries in Asia have made a fortune after legitimizing gaming. Maybe they have. But the casinos in the Philippines, or those run by the state, are mostly rather rundown establishments which attract Filipinos rather than foreigners. On a recent visit, a group of British tourists noted how many of the fruit machines were out of order.

In Cambodia, Phnom Penh has one large casino but it never seems to be particularly busy. In Sri Lanka, which recently introduced casinos, it is not possible to enter if you are a Sri Lankan citizen. On the other hand, the casinos of Singapore are booming in large measure because they are top-of-the-range and plush. If Thailand were ever to consider setting up lawful casinos, the best lessons are probably to be learned in Singapore.

Countries do not offer the identical product when it comes to casinos.

Not coming soon Whatever the ins and outs, legal casinos are not coming to Thailand any time soon. At least we should be grateful here in Pattaya. Imagine the state of the roads if those huge coaches already jamming the roads were out in force on a 24-hour basis, even during the night. Thailand now has a high dependence on group tours from China and casinos never close.

several complaints from the Chinese embassy in Bangkok about compulsory visits to entertainment palaces which could not be considered family-orientated by any stretch of the imagination. The Chinese embassy has also expressed concern about crime and cheating in Pattaya’s beachfront area.

A MasterCard annual survey on international holiday spending recently sent a warning to the Thai travel industry not to become too dependent on Chinese volume, finding that countries and destinations which have a diverse catchment have the most secure future. MasterCard points to the possibility that a sustained economic downturn in the Chinese economy could have a devastating effect on the Thai tourist industry.

But Thai travel gurus say that the Chinese have kept tourism afloat after the disappearance of so many Russians when the collapse of the

ruble doubled the cost of a foreign vacation.

Moreover, there has been negative coverage of the behaviour of some Chinese tourists whilst on holiday in Thailand. A temple in Chiang Rai temporarily shut its door to Chinese visitors after allegedly disrespectful acts by visitors. In the Pattaya area, social media has shown several examples of cultural “shock” including changing a baby’s nappy on a restaurant table and ignorance about restroom protocol. Equally, it can be pointed out that the conduct of some western visitors leaves much to be desired.

Pattaya City Hall told Pattaya Today that officials are aware of the problems. Extra parking facilities for large vehicles is under active consideration near Bali Hai and handbooks of protocol for Chinese visitors in their own language were now being distributed along with flight tickets. But it was stressed that Chinese tourists in Pattaya are currently spending more than any

other nationality. A suggestion that there should be a limit on the size of coaches allowed on Pattaya sois is said to be under review as a way of reducing traffic mayhem.

In the medium term, optimists say that the dependence on Chinese visitors will right itself. For example, serious attempts are now being made to improve Pattaya’s transport infrastructure overall, including ring roads and an underground tunnel for through traffic on Sukhumvit Highway. A Japanese proposal to help build a high-speed rail link from Bangkok to Rayong is also in the pipeline. It is believed that such developments, together with Pattaya’s increasingly upscale image as regards facilities and entertainment, will ensure a truly international clientele.

However, most of these initiatives are not scheduled to bear fruit until the next decade when, in the words of City Hall, Pattaya should become “the Thai Riviera”.

In the meantime, Pattaya will muddle through. It always has.

More blood to the Red Cross

Mityon Pattaya held a blood donating facility at Honda Wing Center on Thepprasit Road which attracted 142 customers and locals to contribute to the stocks of

the precious fluid maintained by the Thai Red Cross Society. Next blood donation will be held on August 14 and September 14.

Human trafficking spotlighted The labour ministry and harbor authorities hosted a conference to explain that the local fishing industry must be free of human trafficking and forced or slave workers, in accordance with Thai laws. At present there are 4,629 vessels conducting fishing operations along the Eastern Seaboard. Marine authorities are checking all of them for abuse in accordance with the instructions of the National Council for Peace and Order.

Grow your own food

Banglamung civic officials visited a self-sufficient learning centre to encourage local people to develop community agriculture and to grow vegetables. District chief Jakrapong Ratchaneekul said a budget of 500,000 baht had been given so that local people can live healthily and make a profit at the same time.

Asian disabled are spotlighted City Hall officials presided over a meeting in preparation for Workability Asia Conference 2015, which will be held at the Hilton Pattaya on July 8-10. The conference will review the workability of handicapped persons in Asia. The manager of The Redemptorist Foundation for People with Disabilities, Samrit Chapirom, said that organizations which favoured the employment of physicallychallenged persons would be given stickers with a special mark.

Academic prejudice The controversy at Thammasat University, where a transgender lecturer was appointed but then not confirmed, is a reminder that Thailand is a country of mixed messages as regards sexual minorities. On the one hand, Thailand is usually regarded as one of the most liberal countries in the world on matters concerning lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. One aspect is that Bangkok is far and away the most popular location on earth when it comes to transgender surgery. Polish member of parliament Anna Grodzka openly boasts of her operation and urges transgender-reassignment seekers not to hesitate to come to Thailand.

When it comes to gay bars, Thai cities such as Bangkok and Pattaya have more than enough although, like straight go-go bars, they are less popular than they were owing to the growth of the social media which has diversified the options for making contact. Additionally, prices have risen sharply in recent years whilst some European cities, such as Prague or Berlin, have developed their own gay scene to rival what was once a near-total Thai monopoly for vacationers.

But prejudice is still there just under the surface or even on top of it. For example, a transgender person is not allowed in Thailand to carry an ID card which reflects a changed gender preference. If you are a male at birth you remain a male all your life which explains why transgenders have to show up on military conscription day, made objects of ridicule and then sent away. Until a few years ago, they were rejected formally for being unfit for military service because of mental defects.

Another area which causes surprise internationally is that gay marriages or civil unions are not permitted in Thailand.

Even though Bangkok-based foreign embassies are often asked if they can perform a ceremony – as they can in some more tolerant Asian countries – they must decline. After all, if two Thai men cannot officially record a relationship, then the same rule obviously applies to a foreigner based in the country. The draft 2015 constitution does seem to guarantee civil rights to all minorities, but it is too early to say how such a generalization would be interpreted at the level of detail. Nobody knows and the current written draft may not be the final one.

As matters currently stand, the surviving partner in a gay relationship cannot pass on his or her property by virtue of that relationship, although he or she can make a will specifying personal legacies. Gay adoption is still a virtually taboo subject in Thailand, often caused by a strange view that it may encourage pedophilia. Nor do gays or transgenders have protection under law against unfair dismissal which the case of Kath Khangpiboon at Thammasat University has highlighted in its own way.

Pattaya has a large number of cross-dressers, not necessarily intending to have gender reassignment surgery, and the ones on Beach Road and Walking Street are subject to regular police raids and summary arrest. It is often argued that these arrests are conducted in the name of public safety, but cynics might say that the 100-200 baht fines are a form of tea money paid to the police. Meanwhile, a probably larger group of Thai transgender individuals are not involved in petty crime or prostitution and are found working in banks, factories, hospitals, restaurants and places of entertainment. Thailand presents two images to the world when the question of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) arises in the public arena. Certainly, things are seldom what they seem.

A North Pattaya massage parlour was visited by police investigators after allegations that the herbal balm being used there was substandard and unlicensed. Police also confiscated some shark’s fin and bird’s nest which were taken away for serious forensic examination.

Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) recently held a conference at The Bayview Pattaya to explore the issue of preventing corruption in the future by addressing integrity and transparency in operations of the organization. Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakai and other civic officials joined the meeting on propriety in public life.

Drunk driver arrested

A particularly nasty accident near the railway line in Siam Country Club area resulted in the death of a motorbike rider. Rungrot Kuedsoongnon, 22, had been squashed after an inebriated car driver crashed into the back of his two-wheeler. The dead man’s sister and brother-in-law were injured and rushed to hospital.

Pich Pinyapong, 19 and the car driver, was arrested on suspicion of causing a fatality whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs and taken to Nongprue police station for judicial processing. Onlookers said the car driver did not appear to understand he had crashed and tried to continue driving even after the accident.

Mid East cafés searched Banglamung district officials and excise inspectors visited several premises in South Pattaya in the never-ending campaign against illegal substances. They found Mid East tourists smoking baraku in two cafeterias and seized several kilos of illegal stuff on which duty had not in any case been paid. Nichet Pimput, 34, admitted he was the owner of the drugs in both premises and was taken away for a question and answer session at police headquarters.

Man dies after accident

A fatality occurred at the top end of Soi Post Office, Pattaya, when a man crossing the road was hit by an SUV. The driver Saowanee Finley, 49, said that the victim Panuwat Paochantuek, 24, stepped off the pavement without looking, making the unfortunate collision inevitable. He was badly injured and died later in hospital.

Police took several witness statements which appeared to support the driver’s contention.

American dies alone in condo

An American pensioner, 76, was found dead in his apartment after security staff were alerted that he had not been seen for several days. Thomas Stamps Darby III was found lying beside the bed and had breathed his last about 72 hours previously. The manager of the condo on South Pattaya Road said a friend of the deceased had come to the office to express his concern after banging on his door in vain. The body was sent for autopsy but police said there were many medicines in the room which suggested he had been far from well.

Charity marathon event

The Pattaya City sports chairman, Rattanachai Suttidechanai, presided over the opening of the Walk-Run charity competition in which over 2,000 persons took part. A claim is being made to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not as this is believed to be the first time in Thailand that so many individuals have taken part in a beach race.

Obituary Father Francis Victor Gautreaux C.Ss.R. 1925 – 2015

Former pastor of St. Nikolaus Church Pattaya, Father Francis Victor Gautreaux C.Ss.R., died on Friday, June 19, and was laid to rest in the cemetery of his former church.

Francis Gautreaux was born in America in 1925, the youngest of 12 children. He lived his early years on a sugar plantation where his father was foreman, located on the outskirts of the town of Houma in Louisiana.

Like his siblings he attended a local grade school for six years, but at the age of 13 he entered the Catholic Minor Seminary in Kirkwood, Missouri.

On Thursday, June 29, 1950, Francis Gautreaux was ordained a Redemptorist priest.

The young Father Gautreaux was one of six newly ordained priests who were selected to join overseas missions. He was hoping to be sent to Brazil, where ‘they used God’s alphabet, English’, but instead was informed he would be off to Thailand.

Departing from Oakland, California in 1952, the journey to Thailand took 26 days and he often recalled his earliest memories of his new home, where the heat was unbearable and cattle were still grazing on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road, now one of the busiest and most urbanized areas in Southeast Asia.

For the young priest his first six months in Thailand was spent in Chanthaburi, studying the Thai language with teachers for three hours each day, plus another five hours completing homework.

This was followed by his first assignment, taking care of several parishes in the northeastern province of Nong Khai and getting from one part of the province to another was not as easy as it is today, “One day travel by bus from our base in the village of Xang Ming, wait for a merchant’s boat and then travel by boat for two and a half days along the Mekong River – no travel at night and the last two hours by the river paddle boat. All was new and exciting.”

Father Gautreaux spent many years in the northeast of Thailand, but, as is normal in the life of a missionary, was sent to work in parishes throughout the country; four years in Loei province, Pastor at Holy Redeemer in Bangkok, teaching the seminarians in Sri Racha as well as several years in Pattaya working alongside Father Ray Brennan who set up the Father Ray Foundation.

Francis Gautreaux died a few weeks short of his 90th birthday. He had spent more than 63 years in Thailand. He was laid to rest near his good friends, Father Ray Brennan and Father Pat Morrissy, following a Mass which was attended by many, including more than 40 bishops and priests, as well as many nuns who had traveled from all over Thailand.

Francis Gautreaux’s final years were spent in poor health. He will be remembered by everyone who met him as a man of faith, devotion, short in height but big in character.

No home of my own Q: I am based in UK with a good job and want to invite my Thai girlfriend to come over for a two months holiday this summer. However, I have no home of my own and live with my parents in a house with a mortgage. Does this rule me out as the guarantor?

A: No it doesn’t. As part of the application process, you need to obtain a letter from your parents offering free accommodation for the duration of the stay. They also need to state how big the house is in terms of rooms and who ordinarily lives there. You will also need a couple of recently paid utility bills for that house and a recent statement from the mortgage company.

Non-imm “B” and Retirement Q: I want to cancel my work permit and immediately change my non-immigrant “B” visa to a one-year retirement. Is this possible?

A: It is. You would take your passport and work permit to the relevant labor department office (plus a passport size photo). After cancellation of the work permit, they will give you a Tor Tor 10 form as confirmation. Take this and your passport to your local immigration office, same day if possible as your visa collapses at the same time as cancellation of permit, and request transfer to one-year retirement visa. Usual rules apply – you need to show at least 800,000 baht in a Thai bank (held for several months) or a letter from your embassy confirming income from abroad.

Sharing the Road Over 1,500 cyclists participated in the “Nation Bike Share the Road 2015” which was held under the auspices of Pattaya City Hall and Nation Broadcasting Corporation.

The event, which is held annually, is designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle and to set a good example to couch potatoes. In a separate development, civic authorities are planning a special bikers-only lane at Mabprachan reservoir.

Tesco Lotus held a “good health good life” aerobics competition in Pattaya with selected teams going forward to the finals in Bangkok. As regards the under-15 teams, Kanchananukroh School and Ban Tha Madue School will represent the Eastern Seaboard.

Thai passports Q: My Thai girlfriend needs a new passport and I have heard there is now a quicker way to obtain one. What is it and how much does it cost?

A: Ordinarily a Thai passport costs 1,000 baht and takes three days to process. There is now a new system in operation at Thai passport offices whereby an applicant can pay 2,000 baht for a 24hour service and 3,000 baht for same-day service (provided you apply in the morning).

What kind of visa?

Q: I am a British guy who wants to leave Thailand and resume a career in UK. I want to take my Thai girlfriend with me to live permanently over there. What sort of visa do I need?

A: A settlement visa is your long-term aim, but it is awarded principally to foreigners who are joining a partner already “settled” in UK. Royal Cliff conducts Workplace Fire Safety Training and Emergency Response Program

Royal Cliff Hotels Group conducted its 26th Annual Workplace Fire Safety Training and Emergency Response Program together with the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Pattaya.

Over 200 employees from various departments were selected to join the informative program which comprised of sessions covering the fundamentals of fire, hazard recognition and prevention, along with an introduction to firefighting equipment such as smoke detectors, fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire hoses. In the afternoon, participants also had the great opportunity of learning basic first aid needs and were given a demonstration of how to professionally carry out a CPR and other lifesaving techniques by qualified nurses.

A California Wine Icon comes to Sheraton Pattaya

Beringer Wines and the Cuisine of Chef Pichit Make for a Memorable Evening The sunset terrace at Sheraton Pattaya was transformed into a Californian set (complete with Hollywood sign) to stage this latest vinous-gastro event featuring the wines of the Beringer Vineyards from the Napa Valley, California. Sheraton Pattaya wine dinners are always high flying affairs and this night was no exception. A selection of five vintages had been carefully chosen to pair with Executive Chef Pichit Plaibua’s special menu.

Said to be the epitome of modern, classic wines, Beringer has been the Napa Valley benchmark producer since its establishment in 1876.

Their winemaking legacy of more than 130 years is reflected in an acclaimed portfolio of wines which are collected worldwide. It is worth noting that if California were a nation, it would be the fourth leading wine-producing country in the world behind France, Italy and Spain.

the evening, a chilled Beringer Founder Estate Chardonnay 2012 accompanied by the most delicious canapés enjoyed with the backdrop of Sheraton’s privileged panoramic vista out over the bay.

Dinner was called and once settled we were served the prestarter of olive, Gruyere and tomato brioche, cheesy focaccia and pretzel twists accompanied by a sundried tomato pesto. An absolute scrumptious basket of artisan breads and zesty pesto but restraint was needed – we had five more courses to go. The first of which was promptly served: cured hamachi (yellowfin tuna) with avocado, harissa yoghurt, duck crackling, caviar and basil oil powder. Now we’ve eaten yellowfin tuna sashimistyle before but never cured and it was absolutely incredible, soft and tender with the freshness shining through plus the addition of the other embellishments, especially the harissa yoghurt and duck crackling

it was a beautiful, dramatic dish. The Chardonnay made for the perfect combo to pair with the tuna. Pear and apple on the palate with a hint of citrus, it was a marriage made in heaven.

The next course presented Swiss chard and duck served cannelloni fashion. Attended by earthy wild mushrooms and a rich foie gras pop, it was another inspirational dish.

The wine coupling was a Beringer Zinfandel 2012. Medium ruby red in colour with soft tannins and fruity aromas, it did indeed make good friends with this flavoursome dish.

The third course highlighted roasted lamb loin. Cooked to the perfect manner of pinkness, for our taste, and served with the thymeinfused aubergine the nutty lush fava beans together with the added sweetness of balsamic honey and crunch of sea salt, it proved another hit. The selected wine for this course was our favourite of the evening, a Beringer Founder Estate Merlot

Swiss chard and duck cannelloni

2012. A medium bodied, fruity wine with light oak notes and fine tannins married well with the sweetness of the lamb.

Beringer Founder Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 was the next pour of the evening to be served with the main course, slow-cooked Wagyu short rib escorted by parsnip puree, spring vegetables and rosemary.

This renowned beef benefited by being heavily marbled and cooked slow and steady to bring out its natural flavourings. Partnered by the ruby red Cabernet Sauvignon with its fullness and vanilla oak finish the room gained a much quieter ambiance as this point as we all appreciated the high quality beef and wines before us. Comfort food par excellence indeed!

Our fifth and final pouring of the evening comprised a Beringer White Zinfandel 2013. With a hue of pale rose and an aroma of strawberries and rhubarb, it was a delicate, slightly sweet wine with a soft finish.

Orange and Grand Marnier soufflé

The significant other for this course was an orange and Grand Marnier soufflé with a vanilla citrus and lime mousse escorted by a green tea biscuit. An exquisite melodious offering which sweetly brought our pageant of dishes to a close.

This outstanding evening of feasting and imbibing not only demonstrated the degree of high chefery in this kitchen but the team effort that is needed to produce these affairs. The evening concluded with the entire room applauding Chef Pichit, his brigade and the serving staff for executing and delivering such a superb dinner. Innovative cuisine with a confluence of luxury overload and fine wines is always going to be a dinner to remember.

First up was a platter of fish and vegetable antipasti (B.800 for two people or single serving B.500). Salmon tartare rested on the sweetest diced avocado, a tube of grilled eggplant revealed sharp crumbly cheese, rolled Bresaola bursted with ricotta, two fat mussels were doused in a tomato and garlic sauce, and three plump, chubby scallops wrapped in pancetta comprised the presentation. Every item excelled in its own individual flavour, the salmon tasted freshly chopped and bright with lemon, the mussels were briny yet sweet with the tangy sauce, the Bresaola (air-dried, salted beef) sweet and musty, the scallops bursting with flavour from the cured pancetta and to top it all, three Hawaiian volcanic salts accompanied this outstanding opening dish adding yet another amazing element.

Next to appear was a Sicilian speciality from chef’s childhood called Schiacciata (B.600), a traditional Italian savoury pie. Filled with broccoli, anchovy, Fontina cheese, chilli and black olives, it was another star dish. A not to be missed item is the porcini and truffle risotto (B.480), soft, creamy and ambrosial, it had been cooked with a master’s hand and I wished I could have finished it down to the very last Arborio grain but our main courses were in store. We had now moved on to a glass of Vitiano Falesco 2011 from Umbria. Clever blending of three classic grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese) has produced a rich, savoury wine from this topnotch Umbrian wine producer.

Our main courses consisted of snow fish wrapped in Parma ham (B.650) and a parchment baked sea bass (B.490). For lovers of snow fish this one is superb, cooked to perfection with the succulent ham providing the umami kick, we loved it. The sea bass had benefited from its baking in paper with its intensified delicate nuances.

Dessert brought a chocolate cake of extreme, dark intensity enhanced with rock salt and olive oil (B.290) to deepen its exquisite cocoa essence – it was scrumptious. Partnered by a big sugary pillow of tiramisu soaked in cream and Amaretto.

What a treat – please don’t leave without delving into the delights of Rossini’s desserts. To round off a stunning meal we imbibed a glass of Limoncello.

Chef Massimo pushed all our foodie buttons, his cooking is exquisite and his ingredients lavish and authentic. The evening was a hit from the word go, each course produced a riot of richness and wonderful flavours. This is

ingredient-led food with emphasis on the traditional but pursued with an individual style.

Craft Beer lands in Silom

A dedicated beer bar concept for fans of boutique beers and cask ales Craft, a cool recreational space serving premium craft beers on-draught, launched its second Bangkok location in June with the opening of Craft Silom. Incorporating beers from all of the major craft beer suppliers in Thailand (Beervana, Hopsession, Mikkeller, Evil Twin, Brewdog) all under one roof, Craft offers over 20 draught taps of popular, niche and avant-garde beers and ales.

The original Craft location started life as a temporary “pop-up” F&B concept on Sukhumvit Soi 23.

Following strong demand and a consistent following of enthusiasts, the decision was made to make it a permanent fixture – and now, naturally, to open a second Craft outlet. Hathor Investment Group, the owner of Craft, has chosen to incorporate Craft Silom into the existing Whisgars/Belle’s Room/ Minus 13 Ice Lounge development, rounding out a superb entertainment complex in the heart of Silom (Soi Surasak, lower Silom Road).

Hathor Investment Group is focused on offering very select products that are rare and unique, expanding a hospitality portfolio and reach into new premium markets. The new Craft venue will provide both food and beverages,

Mick and I were invited to sample Remy’s exclusive cheese dinner under the stars. A glass of chilled Sangria kicked off the evening with an aperitif of grilled cheese and Serrano ham croutons. Cheese

croquettes followed with a glass of Australian Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon. Both starters were made from premium French cheese and worked well. Next up was a glass of Saint-Emilion 2009 with cheese and ham crepes accompanied by an oven-baked potato molten with cheese.

A “Trou Lorrain” followed with an exceptional lemon sorbet with Mirabel sanctified water to clean and stimulate the palate for the humungous cheese assortment to come. The boards included Reblochon, Muenster, Saint-Félicien, Tomme, Brie, Comté, Goat cheese, Blue, Brick, Merzer and more, much more. All these wonderful artisan cheeses were served with a quartet of handcrafted breads from the new French Bakery 89 (situated on Soi 89). Three cereals, rye, farmers and five-grain made for very good friends indeed with the sensational collection of the best cheeses which are all available on the a la carte menu at B.190 for a serving of three or B.390 for seven.

Plastic surgery explained: Breast enlargement

To continue our series of articles on surgical procedures, we will now talk about breast augmentation and lifting.

Quite often, with age and child breastfeeding, breasts are depleted of the fatty tissue that gives them their perkiness of youth. It can be a very stressful condition for women and can lead to lack of selfconfidence and depression in some cases.

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to enlarge or enhance the shape of a woman’s breasts through the use of artificial breast implants.

Women may choose to have breast enlargement surgery either as a reconstructive technique following mastectomy, to balance different sized breasts, or to accentuate the contours of the body. Whatever the specific purpose, women who undergo breast enhancement can expect larger, firmer, and more visually satisfying breasts.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It is performed for a number of reasons.

After a thorough consultation with the surgeon to evaluate the condition and the expectations of the patient, blood tests will be done to ensure the patient is healthy and able to undergo the procedure safely. Chest radiographs and heart screening will also be performed.

Breast augmentation surgery begins with an incision, made either in the crease of the breast, the armpit, or the perimeter of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The placement of the incision will vary according to body type and the specifics of each breast enhancement procedure. The plastic surgeon then creates a pocket for the breast implant; either underneath the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. Breast implants can be placed in either location, centered

directly behind the nipple. Finally, the original incision is sutured.

Breast lifting is more complicated but can be performed at the same time if needed.

After Breast Enlargement Once the surgical incisions have been closed and taped, the breasts are wrapped and supported by a gauze bandage. Breast augmentation patients are fitted with a surgical bra that provides support for several weeks. Fatigue, soreness, and discomfort are postoperative conditions that are greatly reduced through medication. The swelling that follows breast enhancement surgery gradually subsides and becomes undetectable in one month’s time. Stitches are removed within seven to 10 days following breast augmentation.

Breast Enhancement Risks and Complications As with any surgical procedure, complications following breast augmentation, although rare, do exist. Capsular contracture (a tightening of the scar or capsule surrounding the breast implants) can occur following a breast augmentation procedure. If this happens, the plastic surgeon either “scores” the scar tissue, or removes the breast implant and re-inserts another. Other breast enhancement complications include excessive bleeding and infection in the area surrounding the implants. Scars may be evident for several months, but they gradually fade. In some cases, the nipples may become hypersensitive or under-sensitive for a period after breast augmentation surgery. In rare instances, the breasts

may produce milk for several days after the surgical procedure. To maximize the success of breast enlargement and minimize the risk of complication, always follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care.

Just How Bad is the Economy?

There are all kinds of pricing indicators that have surfaced over the years to help us gauge the economy and determine how we are doing financially.

Normally, pricing trends are measured for modern wholesale markets, manufacturing industries and commodities markets by what is known as the Producer Price Index (PPI).

The PPI is the international industry standard for communicating pricing fluctuations and, more importantly, pricing and economic trends.

Then there is something called the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), which is an economic theory and a technique used to determine the relative value of currencies.

When one wishes to understand these pricing trends and/or changes in relative currency values as concerns modern wholesale markets, manufacturing industries and commodities markets, it’s the PPI and PPP that can answer the big questions.

But what about the guy on the street? You know, the average ‘Joe Consumer’ who might be your neighbor, friend or coworker. Just how does he or she really know how things are going in their economy and the financial condition of their geographic area?

Many in our society and throughout the world are unable to decipher or apply such concepts as the PPI or PPP. Most simply have such questions as: Are things getting

better? Are things getting worse? And just how bad is it?

So how can we simplify economics to a level that the average person can understand and appreciate?

Well nearly 30 years ago a clever American pricing standard known as the Big Mac Index (BMI) was introduced in The Economist magazine. The parody by Pam Woodall was a tongue-in-cheek illustration that was so well received that the prestigious magazine has reprinted an updated version every year since. According to Achara’s version of the Big Mac Index, the average price of a Big Mac in America in July 2013 was US $4.56, while in Thailand it was 89 baht—or $2.85 at the exchange rate of 31.27 per dollar at that time; the BMI suggested that the Thai baht was undervalued by 37.5 percent.

Achara realized that the BMI allows economists the world over to easily compare international currencies and their relative strengths, thus pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of purchasing powers from one country to the next by the price of a Big Mac hamburger in local currencies.

devised her own clever insight into pricing parity within the Kingdom, calling it the Isaan Som tam Index (ISI). Her new metric in determining the purchasing power parity of the Thai people is based on the price of som tam, known to most foreigners as papaya salad. Using the BMI or ‘Big Mac Index’ formula to compare the price of som tam in each province of Thailand, Achara determined that the cost of living in Phuket was the highest in the country.

Yes, economically things are getting tough almost everywhere with almost no country unaffected.

Having said that, according to the Associated Press (AP), we recently witnessed a shocking American newspaper headline, ‘The burger chain that put “supersize” into the American vernacular is slimming down: For the first time in more than 40 years, and perhaps ever, McDonald’s says the number of US restaurants it has is shrinking’.

Now that is a pricing reference that anyone can understand and relate to in America, but what about Thailand?

The popularity of a burger in America is about equivalent to a bowl of noodle soup in Thailand, and recently Thailand witnessed its own shocking newspaper headline: Mama brand instant noodles sales drop for the first time in 42 years.

The article went on to say that sales of Mama brand instant noodles dropped 0.3 percent in the first four months of this year, the first decline ever in the company’s 42 years.

Now that’s an economic indicator that everyone here— rich or poor—can understand and relate to.

Pam Woodall’s Big Mac Index and Achara Deboonme’s Isaan Som tam Index demonstrate that there are easier and less confusing methods to measure the state of local economies.

Well Clayton Wade has come up with his own economic indicator: the SBI—better known as the Sign Board Indicator. I have been researching this formula for many months now as I drive back and forth to Bangkok a couple of times every month and I have determined without a doubt that the Thai economy is not going in the right direction yet and has not yet hit bottom either.

On June 15, as I drove past the last 40 sign boards on the Motorway (Highway 7) before reaching Pattaya, I counted 19 that were blank. That represents an SBI Indicator of 47.5 percent. That’s right; nearly half the sign boards were completely empty!

If that is not a sure indication of our current economic situation I don’t know what is.

So, the next time you find yourself driving down the motorway to or from Bangkok and happen to ask yourself ‘Just How Bad is the Economy’… just start counting those empty sign boards and calculate Clayton Wade’s ‘Sign Board Index’ (SBI) and you will have a pretty good idea ‘Just How Bad the Economy is’!

Business News Bangkok Remains One of the World’s Cheapest Office Locations by

Bangkok was ranked among the cheapest office locations in the world whereas other Asian cities continued to dominate the world’s most expensive office locations, accounting for four of the top five markets, according to CBRE Research’s semi-annual Global Prime Office Occupancy Costs survey. London’s West End remains the world’s highest-priced office market.

Bangkok was ranked at 105th place out of 127 cities worldwide surveyed by CBRE Research in Q1 2015 for overall occupancy

costs for Grade A office space. Canberra in Australia was the only city in the Asia Pacific that is cheaper than Bangkok at 111th position.

London’s West End’s overall prime occupancy costs topped the ‘most expensive’ list at 8,058 baht per sqm per month. Hong Kong (Central) followed in second place at 7,669 baht per sqm per month. Beijing (Finance Street) (5,907 baht per sqm), Beijing (Central Business District (CBD)) (5,657 baht per sqm) and New Delhi (Connaught Place – CBD) (4,735 baht per sqm) rounded out the top five.

institutions are in expansionary mode, stimulating demand for office space. However, we are also seeing diverse occupier activity in the region with less expansionary markets—some occupiers are looking to optimize existing accommodations rather than expand.”

In Q1 2015, average Grade A CBD rents in Bangkok increased by 3.2 percent year-over-year to 859 baht per sqm per month. There is limited supply due for completion between 2015 and 2017. Less than 400,000 square meters of office space is under construction. About 20 percent of space under construction will be Grade A in the CBD. The total net take-up in Bangkok for Q1 2015 was around 65,000 sqm, increased by 17 percent year-over-year. “The space taken up at owner occupied buildings was a significant part of net take-up this quarter. A reasonable level of demand and limited supply has caused office rents to rise by 3 to 12 percent year-over-year in all grades and areas,” reported James Pitchon, executive director – Head of Research, CBRE Thailand.

CBRE tracks occupancy costs for Grade A or prime office space in 127 markets around the globe. Of the top 50 ‘most expensive’ markets, Asia Pacific had the most number of markets featured, with 20 markets ranked.

I have seen small business owners saying it so many times that social media is not their piece of cake. Well today, I would like to tell all those startups or new entrepreneurs that social media marketing can bring a hefty influence to their businesses. Just with a little effort, they can attract customers more than ever. After all social media is the most outspread marketing channel for all successful businesses.

A few major benefits of social media marketing is that it’s cost effective, productive and perfect for any newcomer.

So why wouldn’t a niche and funds-stricken clothing or a low-carb home-based baking business make use of it? This is how you can commence from the scratch: Focus on Quality not Quantity We all know why we resort to small businesses—Quality that comes out of human hands. If you are a baker then hand-scooped shakes and custom cupcakes with organic ingredients is what your potential customers would look out for. Set up a page for your business on Facebook, make it work around as if it is your personal profile. Consider your business your new identity. So rather than spending time on selfies, focus on some quality photos and video uploads of the special products that your business produces. Don’t overdo it, and remember, it’s all about the quality of your marketing campaign.

Post Regularly Well I prefer a consistent behavior in all my tasks. It can do wonders. Don’t procrastinate your decision of setting up a social media profile nor consider it a waste of time. Social media marketing may progress slowly in the beginning but it takes-off eventually with the right use of subsidiary tools.

Draw Traffic (with Little Advertising) So that now you have invested your time, invest a bit of money too. Advertising is like a catalyst to boost sales as it draws more traffic towards your website. If you can, put some funds to Google AdWords. This will bolster your website’s ranking to the top. To do this, you will require keywords that reflect your product and are found frequently on your website.

Social media profile on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can also serve a big audience with just a few clicks. Advertising on Facebook is extremely easy and anyone can do it. Just remember who your audience is and you are good to go.

Stay Unique Well I see too much information overload over business’s social media pages. They are only helpful, if managed properly. On the contrary, they can also defame your product. Product differentiation is vital to any startup or homebased business. You need that differentiation in your advertising too. Or you will lose that brand persona that you had always wished for your business.

On your social media journey, you will learn to deal with positive and negative feedback. Customer care experience needs to be phenomenal. Try to stay unique on delivery or after sales services. Let’s say your competitor offers a three-day delivery period. Potential buyers will prefer to buy from you if you have a ‘same-day delivery’ or less than a three-day

delivery period. You need to advertise your specialties if you want more customers.

Watch out for what other stakeholders, like your employees, posts on their social networking profiles. You seriously don’t want those hashtags that can put your business reputation to rubble. Employee monitoring is important as to keep a check on your staff. Try using a mobile monitoring software for that can let you access their social networking apps.

Focus On Community Social media can widen your reach to your potential customers but this is not how small businesses should do it. They should focus on community. Advertising something to the world and expecting to receive a big response would be somehow naïve, unless you are targeting the right people, who can then become your virtual sales force.

Try taking some help from influential personalities like famous bloggers or people with robust followings. This way you can engage the online community, hitting right on the money.

Deliver Value for Money As aforementioned, niche businesses survive because they are unique. If you could deliver not only quality but also value for money in your social media campaign, that would be a double bull’s-eye. Just make sure that your product or its description doesn’t contradict.

Your terms and conditions that tell customers that ‘actual product may vary’ might save you the refund money but it can badly disrupt the reputation of your business. Always make sure that you have a sound refund policy.

Repeat the Success Part If you are able to grab the perfect mix of your social media campaign, repeat it! There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Do it all over again with the same factors. If you didn’t obtain the desired results, make changes.

For example, if your Facebook ad wasn’t very successful, don’t ditch the idea of social media marketing. Just try something else like retargeting your audience or increasing your advertising budget.

Marketing through social media is the biggest weapon of a small business’s arsenal.

Within the limitations and competition posed by big firms, it can get very hard to compete on their scale of operations. People tend to research before purchasing in today’s connected world.

It’s a great opportunity for small businesses to have a strong, vibrant and effective social media presence.

It’s the time to embrace social media. Get close to your customers and don’t be afraid.

Give them a big squeeze and communicate your marketing message. Just a few hours and few clicks every week can magnify your return, building a stronger relationship with existing and new customers. So if you think that posting pictures online of your business is a waste of time, you are wrong!

Usufruct in Thailand What is a usufruct?

A usufruct is a legal right accorded to a person or party called the usufructuary. It is an ownership right to use, enjoy and manage someone else’s immovable property with the advantage of deriving income or benefit from it as long as the property is not in any way damaged or altered.

All extraordinary expenses must be borne by the owner, but in order to meet these or expenses coming under the foregoing section he may realize part of the property unless the usufructuary is willing to advance the necessary funds without charging interest.

Can a usufructuary sell or lease the property?

A usufructuary cannot sell the property but he can transfer his rights on the property to a third party with up to 30year lease.

Can usufructs be inherited?

A usufruct cannot be inherited. Its right and benefit dies with the usufructuary.

Basically it is a right that allows the usufructuary to live on the land and his/her name is registered on the title deed or chanote acknowledging that right.

The right of usufruct is only valid and enforceable after the registration with the land department has been completed. The registration of the usufruct shall make the public aware of the recorded usufruct burden on the property and is therefore enforceable against any third party such as a successor of the property.

For how long can a usufruct be granted?

A usufruct is usually granted for a 30-year period or for the lifetime of the usufructuary. If no time has been fixed, it is presumed that the usufruct is for the life of the usufructuary.

Who shall be responsible for the maintenance and monetary obligations of the property?

The usufructuary shall, for the duration of the usufruct, bear expenses for the management of the property, for ordinary maintenance and petty repairs, pay taxes and duties, and be responsible for interests payable on debts charged upon it.

If major repairs are necessary for the preservation of the property, the usufructuary must immediately inform the owner thereof and ask permission for them to be carried out. In case of default by the owner, the usufructuary may have the work carried

What happens when the usufruct agreement comes to an end?

When usufruct comes to an end, the usufructuary must return the property to the owner, replacing anything which he has wrongfully consumed. The usufructuary is liable for the destruction or depreciation in value of the property, unless he proves that the damage was not caused by his fault. He is not bound to give compensation for depreciation in value caused by reasonable use.

What are the benefits of a usufruct?

For foreigners who cannot own land directly, the benefit of a usufruct is that the Thai land owner will find it more difficult to sell or register mortgage on the land with the usufruct. The usual buyer would ask the owner to terminate the usufruct before buying such land.

QROPS Just when you’d got a handle on QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme), it’s now become ROPS – losing the Qualifying tag. Also the QROPS, now ROPS list has been suspended until July 1, 2015, most likely, because when, in April, HMRC sent out what has been described as a “courtesy letter”, together with a questionnaire asking all schemes whether they still complied, two of the jurisdictions for QROPS did not comply, in the strict sense of the legislation, namely Australia and Ireland.

It would appear that when they applied for a QROPS reference number not all pension funds/schemes remembered their undertaking to HMRC that they were obliged to keep abreast of current regulations and if unable to do so, inform HMRC and apply to be delisted.

Some jurisdictions had complied already, and others changed their laws/rules to be compliant by April 5, 2015. A large number of schemes had already returned their questionnaires to HMRC signing off that they were compliant, having made what they thought were suitable retrospective amendments to their Trust Deed and Rules. Unfortunately there was a further problem lurking.

On June 16 the Superannuation Committee of the Legal Practice Section of the Law Council of Australia wrote to HMRC in which they acknowledge that – and I quote: “Australian law is broadly consistent with the ‘pension age test’. However, there are limited circumstances where a member’s benefit may be cashed on an earlier date. This means that, applied strictly, an Australian regulated superannuation fund will not satisfy the pension age test because of the law of the country in which the [fund] is established.”

It then goes on to ask HMRC for their views and an exemption.

We are of the opinion that HMRC cannot and will not respond in any detail to the letter. The reason behind this is quite simple. Since 2006, all pension funds have operated on a ‘self-assessment basis’ – that is, a pension scheme applies for an HMRC reference number by submitting an application stating that they conform with the necessary regulations.

If you check the HMRC website regarding ROPS – though it is currently suspended – it stated on June 9 that: “This list contains some of the overseas entities that have told HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) they are Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (ROPS) under section 169 (2) Finance Act 2004. HMRC can’t guarantee these are ROPS or that any transfers to them will be free of UK tax.”

If HMRC were to respond to the Australian letter, they would ‘de facto’ be giving “approval”, which they could not do to a single jurisdiction without an outcry from all others wanting to be treated in a similar vein. It would also signal a return to the pre-2006 regime of “approval”, something HMRC is not geared up for, in the short term at least. We’d like to credit Bethell Codrington for elements of this piece.

So where does this leave QROPS/ROPS transfers going forward?

Our understanding is that HMRC’s hands are tied by the UK domestic legislation, and that any pension transfer that was made to an Australian pension scheme between April 5, 2015 and the date the ‘list’ was suspended on June 18 will be deemed “unauthorised” and an “unauthorised payment charge and surcharge” totalling 55 percent will be issued. The same is likely true for Ireland.

For schemes that were compliant on April 5, 2015 there will be little change apart from an amended list and disclosure from HMRC. For those considering a transfer, it is essential to take specialist advice in this complex field.

Summer school The summer holidays are with us and for some in our international school community this means long journeys to visit family and friends in other countries. Of those who are not travelling so far afield, some will attend summer school. This can be a great opportunity for children to get out of the house, see their friends and keep their minds in ‘learning mode’ for part of the long summer holiday. For those who are starting school in August it can be an opportunity to make new friends, or to familiarise themselves with a new school setting.

It is important for children to spend some time away from school to enjoy free time with family or friends or to travel and broaden their knowledge of the wider world. With this in mind, the summer holiday at Mooltripakdee International School lasts six weeks so the children who choose to attend summer school get a break of a week

at either end of the four-week summer programme.

For the youngest members of the school community in Preschool A, summer school provides a taste of school life before the new term begins and they can begin to form relationships with their teachers and future classmates. For the slightly older Preschool B children, summer school provides a bridge between Preschool and Kindergarten/Reception and at this age children just love to be busy; ask any parent who

has tried to entertain their 4to 5-year-old for six or seven weeks! The children in the higher age ranges get a chance to brush up on their key skills in a relaxed yet vibrant learning environment, get outside with some ‘hands-on’ learning activities and perhaps revisit familiar subjects from a different angle.

International schools like ours often have a wide catchment area; with children traveling from all around a town or city to attend school.

For some of these children,

school time is their only opportunity to socialize with their peers and so summer school can be a way to keep in contact with their school friends over the long break.

For non-native English speakers it can be a good way of keeping their language skills up to scratch and for those who live in busy metropolitan areas, summer school can be

an oasis where children can play and exercise in a friendly and safe environment.

In order to continue to spark children’s interest, motivate and inspire, it’s important that any additional school programme offers something slightly different from the day-to-day school life. Outdoor activities and field trips are the perfect way to

bring summer school topics to life and make the children feel like they are part of something special and fun. Invariably it is these departures from routine which provide some of the lasting memories which children may carry with them for years to come.

Bangkok Prep to open new secondary campus in 2017 Bangkok International Preparatory and Secondary School (Bangkok Prep) is opening a new secondary campus on Sukhumvit 77.

The land will be approximately 3 kilometres from the existing campus on Sukhumvit 53, and conveniently accessible from

BTS On Nut, Sukhumvit 71 and Ram Inthra – At Narong Expressway. The campus will be surrounded by a private residential neighborhood and is scheduled to open in August 2017.

Catering for students aged 12-18 years, Bangkok Prep’s secondary campus

will offer classes in Year 7-13. The school’s current campus on Sukhumvit 53 will be turned into a primary school, offering classes from Nursery to Year 6 for students aged 3-11 years.

GIS student named top in Thailand!

A student from Garden International School (GIS) has won the Amnesty International Young Journalist of the Year Thailand 2014-2015 competition.

The Thai branch of Amnesty International ran the competition in international schools across Thailand.

Nupur, aged 12, was the overall winner in the Under 18 category, an amazing achievement for such a young student.

Nupur wrote a moving story about women’s rights.

As well as Nupur’s triumph, other GIS students did well. Seren in Year 10 and Reha in Year 11 were both placed in the top 7 of the Under 18 category.

The competition is seen as important as it encourages students to know more about real life issues and also teaches them how to write engaging, interesting articles about important matters.

On World Oceans Day, Pullman Pattaya Hotel G team gathered to clean up Wongamart Beach to raise awareness of ocean deterioration.

Led by GM Sophon Vongchatchainont, Pullman Pattaya Hotel G team marched along with Sky Beach Condominium.

The G Team assembled with other beachfront entrepreneurs as well as tourists who had seen the activity and joined the

action to show their support of the ocean’s well-being promotion.

One Man and His Motorbike: A Mission for Children In Need The Goodwill Journey, a charitable mission, is raising awareness for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), a non-political and non-profit entity, by going on an epic one-anda-half-year-long motorbike journey.

in the Middle East. This journey is the longest and most ambitious that Wissam has ever undertaken.

Speaking about why he has chosen to embark on the daring trip, Wissam said, “The worst thing in life is to fall down and realize that there is no one to offer a helping hand to get you back up.

“Sometimes you can rise back up on your own; but that isn’t always the case. The sick and injured children of the Middle East have fallen down, and they have no strength to rise up on their own. We need to be that hand; we must be that hand.”

A day to pay respect On any particular Thursday in June, students attending kindergardens, schools, colleges and universities throughout the Kingdom take time off from their studies to perform the wai khru ceremony.

This is the day students present their teachers with elaborate, decorated floral arrangements to show their respect for what their teachers do for them.

At the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities, students were given Wednesday afternoon off from study to prepare for the ceremony and they certainly put the time to good use.

With more than 220 students, most sitting on the floor or in wheelchairs, the ceremony was opened

Father Michael, together with Sister Pavinee, manager of the school, then accepted the floral arrangements from a representative of each class on behalf of the teaching staff, and prizes were awarded for the most beautiful as well as the most imaginative gift.

Special guest at the ceremony was Dr. Yanyong Phataralaoha, president of

Thai Pipe Industry Co., Ltd., who presented a donation of 500,000 baht to the school, as well as presenting several students with personal

scholarships.

Since the school opened in 1984, more than 3,000 young adults living with a disability have successfully graduated

GIS lands top eco award Garden International School (GIS) has been given a top award for its successful environmental projects.

The school has received the Silver Award from the UK-based Eco-Schools organisation. Eco-Schools is a group that aims to promote environmental awareness in the UK and also in international schools like GIS, which is based in Ban Chang, near Pattaya.

Head of Humanities Tommy Elderkamp said, “We have worked hard in the past two years for this award.

“We now have a full recycling scheme, which has paid for a new garden area and other landscaping

around the school, creating lots of biodiversity. We removed fences and now we have hedges, which were all bought from the recycling scheme.

“The concept of sustainability and environmental awareness is thoroughly embedded in our curriculum. For example, all the Years 7 to 9 students have eco-awesomeness lessons in their timetable. During these lessons, students carry out their own mini projects; Year 7 have set up a battery recycling scheme, there was a ‘cycle to school’ week and others made bird houses, butterfly feeders and furniture from scrap wood.”

Higher up the school, students who study for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, also learn about sustainability in Geography, Design Technology (where they study green design), Biology

and are now living and working in society as equals.

Sukosol Pattaya Hotels join World Environment Day 2015

The management and staff of Siam Bayshore Pattaya, The Bayview Pattaya and Wave Hotel, Pattaya participated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Pattaya City to release marine lives on World Environment Day 2015.

More than 60,000 fish, squids and spotted babylons were released into the sea at Jomtien Beach, and a beach cleanup was conducted afterwards.

Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik climbs high at the Austrian Grand Prix

Round 2 of the GP3 Series on June 19-21 took place at the Red Bull Ring circuit in the mountains of Spielberg, Austria. The Thai driver was keen to improve upon his results from the previous round in Spain, and was seeking rewards for a top 10 finish.

Stuvik, as usual, is racing for Status GP with the support of Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik qualified in 7th place with a time of 1:19.970, just 0.620 from the pole position driver Luca Ghiotto who set a 1:19.350. Second and third grid spots were Esteban Ocon and Alex Palou, respectively. Stuvik said, “I feel that we’ve made a step up from the first round at Barcelona in terms of car balance but there is still more time to gain. Again we will be working closely with the engineers and teammates to set up the car for the race.”

Race 1 of the weekend on Saturday afternoon saw Stuvik finishing in 7th place after a tough fought battle. First place was Luca Ghiotto, followed by Antonio Fuoco and Esteban Ocon in second and third positions. Stuvik said, “This circuit lends itself much better to racing as there are areas to overtake and it suits my driving style. Also, now we’ve seen how much more we can use the tire throughout a race.

The key for the next race will be to maximise the tires for the slightly shorter race tomorrow. But overall I’m very happy to be in the top 10 and scoring good points.”

Race 2 on Sunday morning the Thai driver was crashed out in the second corner when another driver overestimated his brake point and took out five cars including himself. First place was Oscar Tunjo, with Marvin Kirchhofer and Esteban Ocon filling out the podium. Stuvik said, “It’s a shame to have my race ended by the mistake of another driver.

We were in for a strong points finish. Now we have shown our pace and know that in Silverstone we will be up there fighting for points once again.”

During the low season (July and August), the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club is offering free golf carts on Tuesdays for everyone.

After recently upgrading their Mountain and Ocean courses, the new owners at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya have also decided to completely redesign their Lakes course.

Top Thai designer Piraporn Nimatra is back again to create this exciting new 9 holes and is rerouting some of the holes and creating new water hazards, bunkers and greens.

The work is expected to be completed by November 2015, meanwhile the club is open for business and the members and visitors are enjoying the remaining 18 holes.

A completely new management team has also now taken over the day-to-day running of the club, headed up by Nathawat Aksornchat, who was previously the general manager at Palm Hills in Hua Hin, and more recently at Thana City Golf Resort in Bangkok. Poommarin “Kae” Sainoy also formerly from Thana City has taken over as Sales and Marketing director.

Nathawat said, “The potential here is fantastic and over the next couple of years we will be working hard to improve not only all 27 holes, but also updating the clubhouse and facilities too.”

Steve Truelove in Crystal form This US Open Friday, the Tropical Golf group was at Crystal Bay rather than Chambers Bay, which explained the lack of cameras and spectators. Still, for the members playing this day there was no golf tournament more important, and with grit, determination and a coffee buzz, we set off for the day’s venue.

The weather this day was hot (naturally) but not so skin blistering as recent weeks.

We hope the worst is over for another year, but probably not.

Playing the C and A courses (why is it always in that order?) the consensus was the greens are in pretty good condition, and the

patchwork of different grasses is merging nicely. The fairways are a different matter; some areas were nice, while many others were hardpan or dead grass. Some spot watering would make a huge difference here. However when one figures in the price of just over 1000 baht to walk, including caddy, it ranks as excellent value.

Crystal Bay is a fair test, and there are usually good scores here. Such was the case today and anyone not playing to their handicap was an observer come awards time.

Taking first place with an impressive 40 points off his low handicap was Steve Truelove (8). Great golf by any measurement! Second place

However, the work is only just beginning for the Thai driver as the next race will take place in just two days at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix on July 3-5. “I’m looking forward to the next race, Silverstone is a very fast and flowing circuit, and I feel it will suit my driving style. With a few cancellations after the overnight rain, Thursday’s expectations were high as 16 diehards gathered for The Growling Swan’s outing to Pattaya Country Club. High expectations indeed, because, at our last visit, the facilities and services were outstanding and once again, they didn’t disappoint. The management team must be complimented and the level of service provided at Pattaya CC continues to rule in the region.

It’s right across from the Bangkok Bank so it’s easy to find.

Winner winner chicken dinner was TGC resident Darren Stanton!

He has been staying with us for four months, and this was Darren’s last round of golf in Pattaya for a while as he shifts back to Sydney to replenish the coffers. If you recall, Darren won our Monthly

We also now have a PVR so have recorded the final day to play over and over again. I think now it is plain to see why we play “ball in the hole” and no “gimmes” as we watched Dustin Johnson hand it on a silver platter to Jordan Speith by missing a 2-foot putt for the trophy.

We would also like to extend a warm welcome and congratulations to Maurice Roberts who is the new golf chairman at the Pattaya Sports Club.

Today was another winner at Green Valley as the course was in perfect condition. We saw John Hutt continue his purple patch and come in with 32 Stableford points to tie Stephen “Scooter” Dunn for second place. If you like ’60s and’ 70s music (and who doesn’t?), then

Parichat Links – White Tees This was an invitational tournament provided by the Parichat management, so four of us went out to play Pattaya’s newest track, Parichat International Golf Link. For a course that has just opened, it was in remarkably good condition and shows loads of potential. The temporary clubhouse was just fine and the new hotel/ clubhouse facility already has the foundation pilings down. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and the buffet dinner provided was top quality.

Our trusty minibus, the Toyota Commuter 9266, is in the shop for a much-needed facelift. With a new paint job, spoiler, wheels and front end, we now have her back to her former glory. A month back she got new Goodyear tyres and we installed glass safety hammers for the guys in the back seats. You can never be too careful! Don’t worry, our price is still just 300 baht.

Today Phil got a break from the driving and we hired two vans from Khun Sangket to take us up near Buddha Mountain. Phoenix is in such a beautiful setting and those stunning views always impress the new visitors, but unfortunately we take it all for granted. We are lucky to live in the best golf destination in all of Asia, are we not?

There are three guys on top of the leaderboard that surely think so. John Hutt once again comes through and continues to amaze. We don’t call it age, we call it experience! Well played, mate. Another Englishman, Peter Thomas, made a return to the podium to share that 2nd place with John. But it was the famous Kenny Aihara, now down to a 2 handicap, who stole the thunder with a nifty 35 on the card. Must be all of that broccoli, Ken! PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society by Peter Blackburn Big Steve’s Gross 74 Just Good Enough!

There was a huge downpour in the early hours of the morning but by the time we arrived at the Phantom Bar to await our departure it was all clear. Christian had flown to Denmark

had a gross 74 for 42 points and took out first place just 1 point ahead of Big Thomas Nyborg in second spot. Departee Dave Neal came third with 35 points and your writer, Peter Blackburn, scraped into fourth spot with a very modest 31 points.

for a couple of weeks the night before so we had big Thomas Nyborg as our bus driver and he navigated his way to Plutaluang without any dramas. It was sadly time to say farewell to good friend Dave Neal, who has been with us for six weeks, and his lady, Thientong – we will miss them both. However it was a hearty welcome back to Dick Braimbridge who is now back with us after several months in Australia. We had three groups on the starting sheet and requested the North and West nines which was granted and we headed off to the North 1 tee. The fairways were quite wet after heavy overnight rain so preferred lies on the fairway was the rule and our first group got away 10 minutes early at 9:50 am. Once again the golf course was in great shape with excellent greens and it was certainly terrific value for money and surprisingly the course was extremely quiet.

With no other groups immediately in front of us we maintained a very good pace and finished our round in three hours and 50 minutes.

Marco Signs Off with a Win! Numbers are down currently for golf in Pattaya but with the help of Lewiinski’s who supplied a few golfers we had four groups ready to play at Phoenix and for a change the weather was looking good. It was time to say farewell to dear friend Marco Beer who is returning to Switzerland in a couple of days and also Dave Fletcher who is going back to work in Western Australia after an extended stay here. Our first group teed off on Mountain 9 about five minutes before our scheduled 10:24 am tee time and the weather stayed fine throughout the round with the golf course in good shape and the greens still improving. With very few other golfers on the course the pace was quite good and most groups finished in a little over four hours.

For the first time this trip Marco Beer found himself on the podium and was one of two golfers with 38 points with the resultant countback

determining him the winner with his 21-point back nine; Thomas Nyborg (18-point back nine) finished in second place. Neil Skilton, who is finally playing some consistent golf, came third with 35 points, and the colourful Walter Baechli finished in fourth spot with 33 points.

Children are most at risk of dog bites Of the hundreds of thousands of people bitten by dogs in Thailand every year, more than half are children. And the majority of fatalities from dog bites are children, babies and newborns.

Dogs bite for many reasons, including improper care and/or a lack of socialization. All dogs are capable of biting when provoked, especially when eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. It’s vitally important to keep both children and dogs safe by preventing dog bites wherever possible.

Instill in your children that they must never approach an unknown dog, and before petting any animal they must first ask for permission. Equally important, they are never to approach an injured animal or a dog that is eating, sleeping or nursing puppies. And when petting or playing with a dog, they are not to poke, hit, pull, pinch or tease it.

If you’re a dog owner, do not leave a baby or small child alone with a dog—even if it is a family pet.

Teach your children to treat the dog with respect— no rough or aggressive play.

This lovely fellow is the last of three kittens rescued from Jomtien. His two sisters have already gone to their new home.

He is very friendly and full of fun; he loves all other cats and would make a lovely new friend for your lonely puss.

Socialize your dog when it’s a young puppy so it feels at ease around people and other animals. Ensure that your pet gets adequate exercise and is always leashed in public.

See a vet regularly, because a sick or injured dog is more likely to bite. And caution everyone to wait until the dog appears comfortable before petting your best friend.

These four tiny kittens were found abandoned in a cardboard box at a temple close to our home. They are still being fed milk every three hours at the moment but by the time you see this article they should soon be ready to go to a new home.

Cat Corner Tip Food Dishes

Cats are known to be finicky, but it's not always about their food.

Sometimes it's about their food and water bowls. Cats may choose not to eat or drink if their bowls aren't right.

What does that mean? Usually it's about keeping the bowls clean.

It's important to wash the utensils every day to prevent any buildup of residue that might interfere with the desirable scent of their meal. Unlike dogs, cats will not eat spoiled food.

Consequently, daily cleaning is a must, preferably in a way that disinfects them while removing any food remnants and eliminating foul odors.

Plastic bowls are especially susceptible to harboring bacteria and offensive smells because they are porous; stainless steel or glass dishes are more hygienic.

A cat also might shun a bowl if it's in the wrong location. They like privacy, or at least some assurance that they may eat without being harassed, interrupted or otherwise bothered.
