Will U-Tapao Airport get a facelift?

Recently Pattaya City Mayor, Mr. Itthipol Khunpluem, Pattaya city officials, and city council members paid an official visit to Rear Admiral Sopon Boonchom, Director of U-Tapao International Airport and other officials to discuss the possibility of developing and upgrading the existing airport to become truly international. The reason behind this need to upgrade the existing airport facilities at U-Tapao is largely

due to the problems that faced Thailand and on a more personal note, Pattaya, when the opposition protestors took over control of the two Bangkok airports, Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi and Bangkok-Don Mueang in the latter part of last year. Thousands of stranded passengers were left high and dry, despite the excellent services carried out by Pattaya’s City Hall in order to help the situation. With the closure of

the two international airports, 1000s of tourists trying to visit Thailand for holidays had to make alternative arrangements. When the two airports were closed some flights were redirected to U-Tapao as it was the only remaining air gateway in the area. Although there are strict guidelines and law in place to prevent this type of demonstration ever being able to get so far out of hand again, Pattaya City Hall officials believe that the upgrading of U-Tapao facilities will ensure an extra safety net,

to protect the tourist industry of Pattaya and the surrounding area. The meeting concentrated on five main projects which were deemed to be the keys to streamlining U-Tapao Airport and bringing it up to international standards. 1. the improvement of the airport landscape, scenery, and surrounding area; 2. the improvement of road surfaces and the expansion of the road to the airport from 2 to 4 lanes; Continued on page 2
