INDEPENDENT PRACTICE SEMESTER TWO 1101808 PETERHOPTON.GDNM.ORG

THE FIRST LAB

As part of the students in charge of the LAB week we intended to spread these around Uni to get all students to the 24hr lock in, I spent more time organise the LAB stuff than doing work.

This is a large hand drawn illustration which took the majority of the week to complete.

BEAUTIFUL BOKEH Bokeh is the name given to light when it becomes out of focus in photography, I wanted to create shapes out of the sphere of light, by creating a stencil shape over the end of the camera. It was interesting but very frustrating and worked, mostly!

Shots taken from the work in, including a couple from a time laps camera that I set up.

Experimentation with flash, long and multi exposure photography.

These are pinhole photographs, exposed directly onto photo sensitive paper and then inverted on the photo enlarger. On one of the cameras instead of a single pin hole, it had a double pin hole, which has created some interesting light effects. However it could of done with a longer exposer.

THE SECOND LAB

Selection of shots taken from the second LAB, during the 24hr work in I did a lot more process work than I have before. The previous pages are a contact sheet of the Photo shoot that I have done for another project. The girl is the basis for the work in my independent practice.

This was a very interesting and confusing piece to create, the idea being that each part of the girl is formed on each piece of wood, then when brought together creates the image of the girl. It hasn't quite worked as it was calculated for 3mm wood and 1mm was used instead, which means more layers are needed. It was cut out using the lazar cutter during the 24hr LAB.

SCREEN PRINTS

Screen prints of the girl, done during the 24hr LAB.

ILLUSTRATIONS

The main point of my independent practice was to investigate different forms of illustrating people as I find drawing people very hard and illustration is still a ferly new thing to me and its something I intend to pursue further. I was also looking at photorealism and distorting the original image with digital processes, the intention was to use the same girl to create some continuity.

The intention of the project became lost as the work went of at a bit of a tangent as exploration of key features of people came out in illustrations, furthermore the original ideas weren't really working.

The process of the new idea was image of a past lover projected onto paper, key features drawn out, scanned in and then simplified . The intention was to draw out key information and memory's of how I preserved the different girls. I find this illustration quite scary!

The style of current scouting design is to have a single person on a white background with some simple outline illustration in the background, the text being purple or green at a 6 degree angle. The experimentation with one person lead to two major issues, firstly there were very few good quality

This is the set of work that is referred to in in portfolio one, it is work for a scout and guide gang show. The brief was quite simple but very open ended, which allowed free rain over the design project, so long as it was better than the last one I did and followed scouting design guidelines.

CLIENT WORK

Please don’t let the trefoil and the Girlguiding wordmark appear without either UK, a Country, Region, County, Division, District or unit name.

Please don’t reproduce the Girlguiding logo in any colours other than our Corporate Blue or black. The strapline must be in Corporate Raspberry for four-colour and two- colour work and in Corporate Blue or black for one-colour work. The only exception to this rule is when the logo is reversed out, in which case the strapline will be either white or a 20 per cent tint of Corporate Raspberry. The Promise Badge for each section is in a different colour. Promise Badges are included in the Design guidelines folder, as both JPEG and EPS files, for your use. Each Promise Badge should only be used for its appropriate section.

Some ‘please don’ts…’

Please don’t use the trefoil on its own except on signage, banners and vehicles

Please don’t scale up JPEG files so that the pixels become visible and create rough edges.

images that could be used for a large scale poster, secondly it looked like we were singling out a single member of the cast to be the face of it. There fore as an alternative an outline illustration was created that would allowed others to imagine them selves as part of the show. This point was very hard to convince some of the clients on, but they have come round to this thinking, future work with them will involve doing the lay out for the show programme ready for the show in the winter.

Please don’t use the trefoil on its own except on signage, banners and vehicles when the complete logo (trefoil plus wordmark) appears close by.

Please don’t scale up JPEG files so that the pixels become visible and create rough edges.

ARC SAT - ASTRIUM

Astrium Reprogrammable Cube Satellites is a project for physics post-graduates to take part in, which allows them to get hand on experience with orbiting satellites. The brief was to design a logo for the project, set by my brother whom has managed to cause quite a headache for me and his manager. The initial idea was quite weak and was more of an illustration, however my brother 'loves it', not shore why. After a rethink and some proper research in to it all I came up with more simplified versions that could be read at a smaller size. Playing around with it to incorporate the swirl of movement the physical cube satellite a range of ideas were put forward

These are the final ideas and the decision has been made to use the bottom ones style and text.

This is potently how it could look as letter head and on business cards.

From doing the independent work this time round I've allowed my self to be a lot more open to the work and let it take its course as I work through it, which has lead to my main idea changing as I went trough the different styles of illustration. I do quite enjoy where my work has gone to whiles doing these illustrations, but I fear that I haven't been able to fully visualise my feelings for these different lovers and the influence that they have had on my life. What has astounded me however is, despite thinking that I was over them and can deal with making art about them is the vast range of emotions that have sprung up whiles staring at them, making art out of them. These range from loss and guilt to loneliness and longing. Working for clients is a harder in areas than I anticipated. The scout project was difficult in

convincing them that the bold colours and shapes are more appealing than using a photo's (or as they wanted a photomontage), specially as I did not wish to upset any of them, as we are all volunteers, by telling them that they had no understanding of what was modern and interesting for people to view. Working for a small engineering department of Astrium was potentially harder as I had no feel for the company and what its current style was as I was designing something that was joining a group of other visuals. I had difficulty getting the information that I needed out of my contact (my brother) and engineers have very little idea of what looks good. Meaning my first idea, which was dreadful, they thought was good! They are still deciding on what they want, in hindsight I should probable have made the choose easier and less complex for them!

The LAB's I spent a lot of time and effort organising the first LAB, which meant I didn't quite get as much enjoyment out of it as others have. But the other work which I have done in connection with the LABs have been very worthwhile and fun. I partially enjoy having contact with the other years and seeing what they are up to. On a personal level I enjoy doing the 24hr, but find that they completely knock me out for the next couple days, so aren't always practical. Visiting lectures I have been blown away by some of the visiting lectures we've had in the second semester in the new auditorium. In particular the calligrapher Paul Antonio, who in the space of two hours blew me away with his knowledge of letter forming and his amazing insights into good practice as inspired me in a way which I never thought was possible.
