sex slaves and fighters,” said eight grader Seth Howard. However, there are some accusations and criticism of the campaign. Invisible Children had been said to donate only 31 percent of their profits to the cause; the rest of the money to their staff, the Ugandan Army, and other expenses, making people think of the campaign as a scam. The Ugandan Army along with the LRA has been accused of violating human rights, using child soldiers and looting civilian homes and businesses. The U.S. government has also been criticized for sending troops to support an army performing such atrocities. There has also been talk of Joseph Kony being dead for five years since there has been almost no LRA activity in Uganda for years. “[The video] seemed so real, and I didn't understand why they would use something like that as a scam. I did my research and stuff, and I'm still not sure which side to believe,” said Camarillo. Invisible Children uploaded a video addressing criticism on March 19. The video was titled “Thank You, KONY 2012 Supporters,” but was focused on critics. The Invisible Children CEO Ben Keesey addressed the many accusations. He explained how Invisible Children had gone around the U.S to share the story freely, and had been working very hard to raise awareness. He explained where Invisible Children’s expenses go to as well. 31 percent of the revenue does go to the actual cost, but they do not squander their money like others claimed. The remaining money was used for travel expenses, film production, fundraising, and awareness programs and products. “The U.S. should be over there,” Howard said. “We were always the bigger person. When Haiti was hit with that giant earthquake, we went there. When Japan’s nuclear plants were affected by the earthquake, we sent help.”

Ohio School Shooting Shocks Nation Chris Sader
RealLifeTravels.com A grandfather comforts a Chardon High School teen after shooting. Six hand-drawn angels grace a plastic-covered piece of cardboard with the wish, "May God Bless everybody in Chardon".
In the last month, a brutal Chadron, Ohio school shooting happened left three dead and two injured as of March 22 . Ohio was getting back into the swing of things and went back to school Thursday, March 15. But before that, the students and parents of Chardon High School came together to remember those that passed and set roses and other meaningful presents on the courthouse gazebo. Six hand-drawn angels graced a plastic-covered piece of cardboard with the wish "May God Bless everybody in Chardon." Two bunches of black and white balloons tied to the gazebo railing included red heart-shaped balloons bearing the names of two victims, and a heart cut from red felt read "ONE HEARTBEAT". "I'm just scared for everybody and I don't know how everybody is going to act going back into school," said Theodore Rosch, 16, a freshman at Chardon High School. A judge said prosecutors had until March 15 to file charges against the shooting suspect, T.J. Lane, a thin, quiet 17-year-old accused of opening fire on a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table at 1,100-student Chardon High School on March 12. Three students died, and two
were seriously wounded. A prosecutor has said Lane, who is in custody, will probably be charged with three counts of aggravated murder and other offenses. Lane had been in trouble before, accused of choking and punching another male in an assault case from 2009, according to court records released March 14 by Judge Timothy Grendell. Lane entered the juvenile court equivalent of a guilty plea to a reduced misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was given a suspended sentence of up to 30 days in jail. "[Lane] went from flunking out, from what I understand, to almost a straight-A student with honors, and he was going to graduate a year early," said Russ Miller, who has known Lane for more than a decade and lives near Jack Nolan, Lane's grandfather. Nolan has familial custody of the teenager. "He was a typical 17-year-old," Miller said. "He didn't really know what he wanted to do in his life." He said Lane didn't smoke, drink or do drugs and is "kind of a health nut."
Another neighbor said Lane played outside often with his sister, building snow hills and skateboarding. Prosecutor David Joyce has described the younger Lane as "someone who's not well" and said the teen didn't know the victims but chose them randomly. Killed were Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16. An 18-year-old girl who was hurt in the shootings was released from the hospital March 13 and was home with relatives, who declined to comment. The second injured teen remained in serious condition. A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said the .22-caliber gun used in the shooting was bought legally in August 2010 from a gun shop in Mentor, Ohio. The official said Lane told authorities he stole a gun from his uncle. Recently, three separate cases of gun violence and children have hit local news in the state of Washington, prompting law- makers to discuss gun safety laws.

Rotavirus Causes Flu-Like Symptoms Amina Abdalla
Imagine getting a fever, nausea, and vomiting all the time, often being followed by abdominal cramps and frequent diarrhea. If you’re a kid not only do you get those symptoms but you also start coughing continuously and getting runny noses, that’s what you get when you get the rotavirus. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, the rotavirus causes a local physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful of the stomach and intestines. The virus causes horrible watery diarrhea, accompanied with vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Cindy Schibig stated how she felt when she got the rotavirus, “It was so horrible; I felt like I couldn’t live through another day, because I was always thirsty. No matter how much water I drank, I still wanted more I felt as if all I wanted to do was drink water all day, and the worst part is you get really horrible diarrhea.” In babies and young children, it can lead to dehydration. The rotavirus is the leading of severe diarrhea in infants and young children all over the world. Before the rotavirus vaccine was introduced to the U.S. for infants in 2006 it infected almost all children in the United States. Children were infected with the rotavirus before their fifth birthday. In the past, the rotavirus was responsible for more than 400,000 doctor visits; more than 200,000 emergency room visits; 55,000 to 70,000
hospitalizations; and 20 to 60 deaths in children younger than their five years of age. According to the Health Care Professionals, you can get the rotavirus mostly through the fecal-oral route which is through close person-to-person contact and through vomit (ex: towels, tables, clothes, keys, money, dishes, toys and etc.). The virus might also be transmitted in other ways, such as through contaminated food AlphaMom.com and water. ‘The Hunger Games’ Mall Tour Stops in Seattle Payton Juan & Amanda Bunger
Aliens Found in Hallway… April Fool’s Day Max Callero
A. Bunger Seattle-area teens got to meet and get an autograph from Liam, Jennifer and Josh inside the Microsoft store.
On Saturday, March 10 in front of the Microsoft store at University Village, more than a thousand devoted teenagers attended The Hunger Games National Mall Tour. The tour started on March 3 at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles. Most of the fans had been camping out around the location since March 2. "This is bigger than me. These books and music are much bigger than me," Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) stated in a King 5 article. After kicking off the six-city U.S tour in Los Angeles, the trio went their separate ways to attend similar events. Liam Hemsworth (Gale) went to Atlanta on March 6, Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) went to Chicago on March 7 and Lawrence went to Miami on March 8. According to a King 5 article, Hutcherson said, “It can be overwhelming. It’s kind of a disconnect for me, I feel like I’m a part of it and then I’m not. It’s crazy.” Seattle was the last stop for the trio before they headed back to Hollywood, for the premiere of The Hunger Games. Only the first Hemsworth, Lawrence and Hutcherson. Some people were devastated when they
arrived early in the morning and were not the first 100. A small amount of teens expected to get to meet the stars of The Hunger Games. One eighth grader particularly, June Lee said, “I expected more people would get to meet [Hemsworth, Lawrence and Hutcherson].” As the cast of the film walked out onto the outdoor stage, teens screamed and pushed to get to the front just to catch a glimpse of the stars. “We waited for 12 hours, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m,” confirmed Lyzelle Maranan. While people waited in the pouring rain, Bender from KISS FM entertained the soaking and anxious adolescents. Eighth grader Allyson Villaflor said, “I left at 3a.m., and when I got there, tons of people were already in line. I waited 17 hours and it wasn’t worth going until I got to see [Hutcherson].” If this event happened again for Catching Fire or Mockingjay would you go? Lyzelle Maranan said that she would. According to June Lee, “I would because I get to see Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.” June also mentioned, “I would get free stuff too.”
The headline is a joke. What’s the point of April Fool’s Day? It’s part of a lot of good and bad memories for a lot of people. Why do we do it? Why April 1? And what are some of the best pranks you can pull on your friends and family? The holiday all started back in France around 1582 when King Charles IX moved New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. News of the change traveled slowly and some people who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and still celebrated New Year’s Day on April first. The day was known as April Fool’s Day and the people were labeled fools, sent on fool’s errands, and sent to nonexistent parties and had other jokes played on them. April Fool’s Day has since evolved into a worldwide holiday. So what are the best pranks you can pull on your friends and family? (See photo for an old standby.) You could go with a classic like drawing on someone while they’re sleeping or taping the spray trigger down on the sink, so it sprays in the face of the next person to use it, but that’s not very fun. Everyone has heard of those ones. Start by putting glue on the door knob of your victim’s room. Next make sure you eat before them and hide the milk when you’re done. If your victim doesn’t eat breakfast, don’t bother with that one. After that put Kool-Aid powder in the shower head, so when they turn the shower on, they get Kool-Aid everywhere. Also in the shower you can replace their shampoo with something nasty. After that put baby powder in their blow dryer. To put the finishing touches on, replace their deodorant with cream cheese and kindly tell them they just got owned.

Oreo Cookies Celebrates 100 Years Arreli Terrazas
We’ve all eaten Oreos and grown up with them, some of us might have embarrassing baby pictures of us with chocolaty remnants smeared all over our faces. But how much do we know about Oreos? In 1898 several baking companies merged to form the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco). On March 6, 1912, Nabisco had a new idea for a cookie—two chocolate disks with a cream filling. The people from Nabisco believed this cookie would be a big hit, but never did they guess that the cookie would still be big 100 years later and be the world’s #1 best-selling cookie and be sold in over 100 countries. In their first release, Nabisco offered two variations— original and lemon meringue. Nabisco discontinued Lemon Meringue Oreos in 1920. The original recipe called for lard. That’s right, pork fat was once the key ingredient in that delicious crème filling. Today, Nabisco uses vegetable oil instead. The first Oreo D. We all love Oreos, of course! and continued to introduce new variations. Oreos had
become a part of 20th century culture. There have been many disputes as to what is the best way to eat Oreos—dunking them in milk or twisting off one side and eating the “stuff” first. Besides eating them plain, people have concocted recipes for Oreo cakes, milkshakes, and a galore of other yummy desserts. In celebration of the Oreo’s centennial birthday, limitededition Birthday Cake Oreos have been released. The cookies feature cake-flavored filling and sprinkles. Have you ever thought about the name “Oreos”? It’s kind of strange to name a cookie like that. There’s different opinions on why Oreos are “Oreos”. The people at Nabisco aren’t sure why they’re “Oreos”. Some believe the name was taken from the French word for gold, “or” (the main color on early Oreo packages). Others claim the name stemmed from the hill-shaped test version (naming the cookie in Greek for mountain, ”oreo”). Maybe the cookie was named “Oreo” because it was short and easy to pronounce. It doesn’t matter what they’re called, how we eat them, or what the original recipe was, Oreos are an all-American icon.
Common in Middle Schools, Is Overeating a Problem in Teens? Diana Kamerzan
Whether it being for just a period of time or ‘forever’, we have all been guilty of overeating (a.k.a stuffing ourselves like the turkeys we eat on Thanksgiving). Although we unintentionally make a routine of this unhealthy habit, we fall into these traps, overwhelming ourselves with unnecessary amounts of food. This happens when socializing, (e.g. with friends ‘chilling’ at the mall food court) or just because the food is in front of you. But the reason that seems to be most popular is ‘boredom’. We humans are known to eat out of boredom. A habit that needs to be dropped, or at the least minimized. Hunger is a cue for your body signaling that you are hungry. This is different from the ‘cue’ that you send yourself that suddenly appears as you walk by a plate of brownies. Before biting the oh-so-tempting treat, have you ever asked yourself, “Am I even hungry?” Despite the fact that overcoming overeating may seem complicated, using simple tips are the way to go. The University of Florida has shown that it takes a minimum time of twelve minutes for food satisfaction signals to reach the brain of a thin person. The larger the person, the longer the wait. Meanwhile, you can read or do homework, and then you can return to your meal if you’re still hungry.
If you are distracted and hurry food into your system, your brain may not register when you should take a break from the ‘snack area.’ Eating and watching T.V., surfing the web, etc. are distractions. Eighth grader Diana Klapiychuk noticed that when she ate and watched cartoons with her little sister, she takes more helpings. Werden Places Second in Miss Auburn Stori Freelund
Courtesy of C. Werden Cami Werden placed second in the Miss Auburn Pageant.
Cami Werden stunned the judges at the Miss Auburn pageant at the Auburn PAC on Feb. 4, 2012. At age 13, Werden was one of the youngest contestants to be in the pageant, but she showed the judges
all she had, coming out with snazzy dance moves, amazing singing, and her good personality and humor. Werden said she had been in the Miss Auburn program since she was in third grade. She said, “I made so many friends and I had so much fun. I had already had friends in the pageant to!” Werden placed second in pageant and she did extremely well for her age. Allison Arthur, age 16 won Miss Auburn, and Werden said, “Alison is so pretty. She has long flowing blonde hair and is tall and slim.” Cami also said “Alison is so nice and I’m glad she won.” Werden just got up on that stage and gave it all she had, but she also stated, “No matter how many times
you are on stage you will always be nervous just a little, always.” There were four stages in the pageant that each contender had to go through. The first one is interview. Werden said, “They gave us the cutest little pink cocktail dresses to wear for the interview.” Once they had them on, people had to ask them questions all about their life and family and what they were about. All the girls had to answer honestly and with feeling. The next stage was evening gown. This is where all the girls had to dress in long flowing gowns and strut their stuff out on stage! Next was physical appearance. Every girl had to show the judges that there were in good condition. Then the last course was talent. You had to go out on the stage and give it your all and perform to the judges. For Werden, it was singing. She absolutely blew the judges out of the water. Cami got on stage and she moved her hips and sang her heart out. Cami said, “I’m still proud of myself even though I only placed second.” Cami Werden said she hoped to compete again in the future.
Senate Opens Doors For McBride Victoria Roberstson
Ashley McBride, an eighth grade student, had the amazing opportunity to assist the Senators in Olympia as a Senate Page. While at the Capitol the Senate Pages do many tasks. A few of those tasks were making deliveries and working in the legislative building. While at the Capitol, the Senate Pages attend page school, where they learn about the legislative process and have some fun, According to McBride, “You get to sign your own bill to try and get passed.” A Senate Page is a student between 14-17 years old. To apply for the opportunity you must have several recommendations, one from a principal and several from teachers. Once you have several recommendations, applicants contact a Senator with an application and recommendations, then they will compose a list of kids to consider. The process is quite competitive, so good recommendations are crucial. According to McBride, “My favorite part of being a Senate Page was working in the legislative building, there I delivered mail to the Senators and worked on the floor. On the floor you sit on the side and do tasks for the Senators.” This was a wonderful opportunity for everyone.
According to Ashley, “I recommend this to anybody, it’s really fun, and you get out of school for a week.” Being a Senate Page is fun! McBride’s history teacher, Mrs. Carnahan said, “I recommend this to students who enjoy history beyond the classroom.” Senate Pages learn a lot and get hands on experience. Mrs. Carnahan thought is a great opportunity. According to Mrs. Carnahan, “it’s great for kids to get firsthand experience; they can apply what they learn in history and see how it applies to the real world.” The Senate Pages have an amazing chance to observe the process of how laws are passed and bills are signed. McBride had an interesting experience while she was in Olympia, according to a paragraph she wrote, “During an average week there are about 600 people every day working at the capitol, but on Wednesday there were 4000-6000 people...” What Ashley was able to witness was citizens protest- Courtesy of A. La Chispa Motivates Growing Population at MBMS Jesica Silva & Rosa Macias
Kyle Sutrick & Jake Estby
What would you do to give back to people that are less fortunate? Mt. Baker students’ Canned Food Drive started Feb. 24 and ended March 9 to support people in the community. This year’s food drive may not look like it brought in a plentiful amount, but last year MBMS only had two bins, compared to this year’s three bins. Mrs. Lindgren’s class brought in a total of 140 cans and tying with Mrs. O’Rourke’s class with a student’s $50 check. According to Mrs. Lindgren, “Kids are unmotivated” and now most kids have to be motivated to do something nice or responsible. This year, according to Mrs. Carnahan, “Seventh grade worked the hardest…they were young enough to care.” Some staff members disagree on how hard the students tried to bring in canned food. Mrs. Carnahan said that her first period seventh grade class all worked together to bring food in, but her eighth graders in third period, only about five kids brought in cans for the food drive. “[Kids] did not care about the community,” said Mrs. Lindgren, when asked kids’ invlovement. She said “It was 50/50.” MBMS has also had more fundraisers this year because of Caps for Carter. Sabrina Khansila brought in the most cans for Mrs. Carnahan’s classes for seventh grade. Alonso Tirado brought in 80 cans for eighth grade. This year’s final tally for total money brought in at Canned Food Drive at Mt. Baker was a total of $553, which is $238 more than last years. Sixth grade students brought in $118, seventh with $354 and eighth graders brought in a mere $81. The winners of the Food Drive were eighth grade in first, with sixth grade in second and seventh grade in third. The eighth graders get the best incentive for donating the most food.

V. McCann The Latinos leadership getting to know about what La Chispa is all about in their first conference with the speakers.
La Chispa, Spanish for “the spark”, is an after school program for Hispanic students. This club is held every Thursday after school from 2:15 to 3:15 in Mt. Baker Middle School. La Chispa is the spark, trying to help the Hispanics become better leaders. What do they do in La Chispa? The Hispanic population in Auburn School district has grown over the last years. According to an Auburn district report in 2001, the Auburn School District was 7.1 percent Hispanic students, and it grew over the past ten years. In 2011, the Hispanic population had tripled to 21.8 percent. La Chispa has taught students many things Lesly Ortega a seventh grade student said, “[The club] teaches me life skills and how to become a more successful person.” “La Chispa brings in positive Latino role models. The speakers can connect to Latinos to their personal experience in a way other people can’t,” said Ms. McCann. The speakers told the students about their life, career, and how they became what they are now. They tell the students how important it is to have an education, so in the future, they can get a good paid job that they like. Our Mt. Baker teacher, Ms. McCann said, “Mt. Baker is a safe global family. [La Chispa] is to celebrate our
diverse cultures to the club. It also offers our Latino students an opportunity to develop team building skills and explore issues and concerns that are specific to them.” La Chispa encourages students to behave well and to follow the rules. This program teaches students not to do drugs. They want the future students to be responsible adults when they get older and to have a good education, (not just for them) but for other people. Guadalupe Castillo an eighth grade student said, “It a fun and great place to hang out after school with my friends.” La Chispa is trying to help the Hispanics students become better leaders by giving them advice about how to be more successful in life. Hispanics have the highest high school dropout rate in U.S and this program attempts to help Latinos get a better education and to finish school. La Chispa teaches Hispanics to become better leaders. To not follow what some people may think, all Hispanics do not like drugs, have kids at an early age, don’t go to college. La Chispa teaches the Hispanic students to have higher standards for themselves and to prove those people wrong.

‘The Hunger Games’ Movie Breaks Box Office Records Opening Weekend Brook Johnson
PhotoFunia.com
The long-anticipated The Hunger Games debuted March 23, 2012, breaking box office records with over $155 million of ticket sales the opening weekend, placing third all-time.
Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games is one most-anticipated movie to see this year. This action, drama, and sci-fi movie was released March 23. Also it was rated PG-13 for intense violent material and disturbing images—all involving teens. The Hunger Games is about a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games is broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' (Jennifer Lawrence) young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), will be pitted against bigger, stronger representa-
tives who have trained for this their whole lives. Many teenage girls were screaming for Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth (Gale). But male of the demographic are screaming for Jennifer Lawrence. Girl fans from The Hunger Games said that they like Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth because they’re a good actor, they’re attractive, fans grew up watching their movies, they are great in front of crowds, and they love all their fans. And guys like Jennifer Lawrence because she is cute, has a nice figure and perfect eyes, and is a good actor. They really fit their characters really well. Many critics have questioned the amount of violence ion the film for a teen audience. Ms. Hammond said, “It’s not about the violence; it’s about the provision of the violence. And how you can keep your personality and not have it go to your head.” While Lyzelle Maranan said, “Without [the violence], the book and movie would be plain and boring. Also it fits the [theme of the] book and movie.”
The Hunger Games was rated PG-13, because sexual content, violence, gore, profanity, alcohol, and frightening and intense scenes. Many scenes involve 24 teenagers fighting to death until one remains. It has profanity that wasn’t in the book, but is in the movie. A man is drunk throughout the whole movie. The movie is entirely emotional and intense. Death and murder is a big part of this movie, very emotionally intense. Even before the film was even released, it was already a big hit. The Hunger Games was predicted that this movie would beat Eclipse’s $138.1 million debut of last year’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1. Last month, when advance tickets went on sale, it broke Fandango.com’s single-day record. In 2013, Gary Ross is directing. Catching Fire, the second book to The Hunger Games series. People are already getting excited for the second film even though they haven’t even seen the first yet. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire is sure to be a big hit.

‘Bully’ Documentary is Overrated Alison Bantigue
The upcoming documentary movie, Bully shows the crisis of bullying, but the MPAA decided to give Bully an R rating do to foul language. But others think it should be PG-13. Over 13 million kids in America are being bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence by children in the nation. The movie, Bully lets people take a look at how bullying touched five kids and their families. But from using certain words in the film, the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America) restricted children to see Bully. Katy Butler, a 17-year-old high school student from Michigan, decided that Bully shouldn’t be rated R, but rated PG-13. Butler has her experience being bullied in school. She came out as a lesbian in high school, and was bullied for doing so. She knew that others should know what bullying could do, and what to do to prevent it. According to Jason Bowman, “Kids should learn what bullying is about, and know how to handle it.” After hearing about the rating for Bully, Butler went to the MPAA’s office and told them that the movie should be PG-13, but they refused. So, Katy decided to make a petition to lower the rating for Bully. The
petition is being signed day by day. The petition ends when the movie comes out, which premiers on March 30. On Bully’s movie website, it said, “THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED” due to the petition. Many people in America are signing the petition, but the MPAA still refused. They know bullying is not right, and that students need to see Bully. But with an Rrating, it’s difficult for the students, and some parents wouldn’t allow their kids to see the film. Many think that if a violent movie can be PG-13, then why can’t a movie showing to stop violence also PG13? According to Kylie Boettcher, “I think bullying is happening because people can’t accept the differences of people, so they feel that they are a threat.” Bullying is happening all over America, and not many people understand what bullying can do. Some believe bullying can’t do much, but it’s the complete opposite. Bullying can ruin someone’s life, and that’s what Bully shows, but the MPAA restricts some people to finally understand bullying. Those who were bullied are now standing up to lower the rating to PG-13 so students can finally see

‘Bounty-Gate’ Scandal: Fair or Baseball Preview: MLB Season Warms-up Colton Roberts Not? NFL Suspends Payton Oscar Macias & Michael Foutz
As everyone knows there’s been this little thing going on with the New Orleans Saints it goes by the little name of bounty gate, but if you’re not paying attention or just don’t care, I’ll give you the details. The New Orleans Saints former defensive coordinator, now with the St. Louis Rams, paid players to take players out with dirty or hard hits. This reward system in sports has been going for so long, going back to the pee wee football, when you got rewarded with stickers. In the NFL, you get rewarded with money. Even other defensive players have been reported as saying that they have been involved with bounties. The NFL commissioner punished the New Orleans Saints severely by losing draft picks. Also, the punishments for the Saint’s behavior will be suspending Gregg Williams indefinitely and suspending Sean Payton a year without pay. All-pro quarterback Drew Brees said on Twitter, “I am speechless. Sean Payton is a great man, coach and mentor… I need to hear an explanation for this punishment.” The NFL commissioner has also thought about punishing the players also, but this is tricky because when you try and go watch the tape of the Saints playing, you have no idea that if there just trying to play there hardest to win the football game, or trying to take a player out. Many players think the punishment was absurd. This has been going on for the longest time, but the New Orleans Saints are getting punished for it because they’re the only team who got caught in the act. Now is this fair or not? Punishing a team when you should punish the whole league? Some fans didn’t think this was fair, but this was not the fans’ decision; this was an NFL decision.

With Spring Training under way, we get to see just how good the teams are coming back from last season.
The official MLB season may not have started yet, but there has definitely has been plenty to talk about. One of the bigger trades that have happened has been the Milwaukie Brewers trading Prince Fielder to the Detroit Tigers. Prince was one of the greatest hitters last year and led the Brewers to the playoffs. Another big contributor to Milwaukie is Ryan Braun, who was accused of taking steroids, but since the test was faulty there was no way to prove him guilty. Some noteworthy trades were, Carlos Beltran going to the defending champion Cardinals, Prince Fielder to Detroit, C.J Wilson to the Angels, and the most interesting one of all was Albert Pujols going to the L.A. Angels. Many of the teams are getting used to some new players that they have received due to trades. While at the same time, getting used to losing some players because of retirement or expired contracts. Injuries have already affected many teams like the Detroit Tigers. Miguel Cabrera took a hard grounder to the face and the ball hit his sunglasses with cut into his face, and has a small fracture under his right eye. Cabrera was supposed to be back in about a week, which was good because he was leading the Tigers in all hitting categories. Another big story was Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies. Howard had Achilles surgery back in
November and had a late-February infection in the same area. He hadn’t done any workouts with his team for three and a half weeks until Thursday, and with Chase Utley out because of knee problems the Phillies are going to have some rough games until they get their players back. Many great players that have decided to retire. The legendary Chipper Jones announced that he will retire at the end of the 2012 season. Jones holds many records in switch hitting and is only behind some of the greatest hitters of all time. Every year a team goes to Japan to play against the Japanese baseball team. And this year the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics get to go there and play against them. The Mariners will play each team twice on an eight-day trip to Tokyo. Ichiro is very excited to go play with his former teammates, and the whole team is looking forward to the trip. So far, the team with the best record between the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues was the Detroit Tigers, with a record of 13-3.Oakland was close behind with a record of 14-5, and our very own Mariners are with 128, but Detroit looks like they will stay ahead for the time being. A lot of things have happened in the offseason and during Spring Training, and we’ll just have to wait and see how well they work out.

The list started with No. 11 North Carolina State, the program that pretty much set the standard for March Madness upsets and gave us one of the most memorable moments in college sports. Free Agent QB Manning Rides into Denver as Bronco Peyton Manning, star NFL quarterback, has recently been released by the Indianapolis Colts. After about three weeks of free agency, he found his team; the Denver Broncos. Manning signed a five year contract for $96 million. Manning had the chance of going to a number of different teams. Some teams that were interested in him were the Cardinals, Broncos, the Titans, Dolphins, Seahawks, and 49ers. John Elway, General Manager of the Denver Broncos, signed Manning Tuesday, March 20. “Tebowing” is going to be the new face of the Jets because Tim Tebow, the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos last season, has been traded to the New York Jets. The trade was finalized on Wednesday, March 21. The only question left for Tebow is, will he start in New York? Some Seahawk fans were very disappointed to see the missed opportunity of Peyton Manning, while other Seahawk fans are fine with not having him.
“Seahawks are rebuilding right now. Manning is probably only going to last two more years and the Seahawks don’t need to waste their salary on him when they can get new players that still have their whole career ahead of them,” said Mr. Vatne. Many Seahawk fans are also happy he didn’t go to any team in our division. “Anywhere but the 49ers or the Cardinals,” said Mr. Lubash. Different thoughts about Manning’s free agency are all over the nation. Some believed he made the right choice when he signed with Denver. Others believe that he should have chosen a different team. But in the end, Peyton Manning did what he wanted to do. He is happy to settle in his new home in Denver and can’t wait to get started.

Juicing the Game: Steroids in Major League Baseball Keegan Stanphill SteroidsinBaseball.org
Baseball and a steroids needle...Do steroids ruin the game?
Recently, Ryan Braun, National League MVP and player for the Milwaukee Brewers, was tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. He appealed saying that the test sample taker did not follow protocol. The sample was kept at the sample-takers home for two days instead of immediately being taken to the lab where it was tested. Ryan Braun beat a 50-game suspension and was the first MLB player to successfully challenge a drug-related penalty. Do steroids ruin the game? There are many infamous baseball players proven of using steroids. This includes Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Jose Canesco, Manny Ramirez, and Mark McGwire. Many were record breakers, and some were supposed to bring back the sport without steroids but were later discovered to have used them. Steroids not for medical use are cheating. Most fans think so too. Kayla Hettinger said, “[Steroid-users) ruin the sport”. Bringing up a once-great but now-exiled player will get you boos from even the least dedicated sports fans.
To understand the full story you must know where these suddenly popular enhancements come from. Developed in BALCO Labs of San Francisco came the clear. The clear is really tetrahydrogestrinone. A new designer steroid designed to be undetectable by modern tests. This steroid contains an animal grade steroid to increase livestock weight and is extremely powerful. It was very popular because from its creation to 2003, but it was undetectable. In 2003 a syringe of tetrahydrogestrinone was sent to a lab were a test was developed. Jose Canesco was the Rookie of the Year and a great player in the mid-80’s. He later wrote a book called Juice, where he wrote that his success was the result of steroid use. His book gave away the names of many people he had advised on steroids and caused an uproar of denials by Major League Players. Today, Canseco can’t get back into baseball and is suffering health issues from 20 years of steroids. All-time homerun record-holder Barry Bonds had hit his peak and wouldn’t have been able to play Major League Baseball much longer but he soon changed from skinny wiry player to a huge powerhouse. This all happened when Bonds was 34 and got his new trainer, Greg Anderson. Bonds claimed he did not know about the steroids and claimed his trainer, Anderson, had been giving him vitamins. Bonds must have known that you can’t get that big past your prime. He is now one of the most infamous baseball players and many fans abandoned him. Many people can get over it if a player takes steroids. The palyer usually won’t play again and is forgotten except for brief moments when fans reminisce. Manny Ramirez was a huge hero in Boston. He led the Red Sox to the World Series, playing left field alongside greats like Johnny Damon and the once-great Barry Bonds. Ramirez and Bonds were an inspirations to kids on the cover of the MVP Baseball video game. Now, they are a marred, not as legends and role models, but by steroid claims.
Seventh Grade Hoops Goes Undefeated Alexandra Vasquez
Olivia Denton and Mckenzi Williams were this year’s seventh grade basketball stars. Even though these two show amazing talent and sportsmanship on and off the court, they still remembered that there was no “I” in team. Mckenzi Williams said, “We’re all friends and we work together well and that helps us be more prepared.” This year’s Team 1and 2have gone undefeated. Team 1 coach Mrs. Swanson said, “This year is going good, we have great teams, great leaders and everyone is very cooperative.” Olivia Denton ,who’s the star of team 1, had amazing talents and was also on the Auburn-Riverside High School select team. Coach Swanson said, “Olivia is one of my best players because she has amazing leadership and she takes the time to help and I can count on her.” When Team 1 played against North Tapps on March 14, the girls won against one of the hardest teams they had to take on this season. During the game, Olivia showed great team work and also said, “I was very happy with the way we played, we all worked together and almost everyone made shots.” Team 2 coach Ms. Burkhalter said, “I’m very proud of this year’s team because we have great sportsmanship, they all work together and they are a fun team.” Mckenzi Williams was Team 2’s star this year. “She plays a lot of basketball and she is the leading scorer on the team,” Coach Burkhalter said. Even though Mckenzi is the star, she said, “I think Victoria has the best sportsmanship. She’s always encouraging and never gets mad at the team, even when they mess up.” These girls love to play basketball. Even if they do mess around at practice and sometimes even before a game. They always know how to bring it back together to win.

Have you ever wondered if your teachers have had any embarrassing moments? If you have them, keep reading! Sixth grade math teacher Mr. Lubash said, “It’s always embarrassing when you going to town on a math problem and there are numbers all over the board but the whole math problem is wrong. That’s why I like teaching sixth graders because they just sit there and don’t say anything.” Ms. Hammond a traveling teacher said, “When I was in seventh grade, I played basketball for Olympic. But everyone made fun of me because I was on varsity and I was the only seventh grader on the team.” She continued, “The jerseys and warm-up clothes were way too big so I had to constantly pull the shorts and pants up. One time during practice, I was running down the court to make a shot and my pants fell down in front of everybody! I fell flat on my face super hard. I was so embarrassed and from then on my coach had to tape my pants to my waste and unwrap me every time we went on the court to play.” Mrs. Wharton, the amazing orchestra teacher, has quite the teary-eyed embarrassing moment. She said, “At the end of every final eighth grade concert I start to cry because I know they are going to high school and I won’t get to teach them anymore.” Another one of her embarrassing moments was, “ I was conducting and I got really, really into the music when all of the sudden I hit my baton on the music stand in front of me, and it snapped in half and the tip went flying!” Mr. Perman an amazing P.E. teacher told us his fascinating story of embarrassment. “I was standing in the little gym watching my class play crab soccer, I looked down at my clipboard for a moment when a ball came flying at my face and it hit the clipboard and the board hit my face and gave me a bloody nose. He also said “I had to go to the hospital right away and get stitches. It was really embarrassing.” See if you can top these teachers’ stories.

gether!” I mean you got your supporters for couples, then the haters. Come on people! Does knowing which celebrity is dating another celebrity even matter? NO it doesn’t! Supporters keep on obsessing that they are meant for each other and they should marry, or something. Then when the celebrity couple breaks up, they get angry and yell, “WHY?!” The haters are the ones who tend to have a crush on one of the celebrities in the couple. So they complain and start to hate on their boyfriend/girlfriend, which is unnecessary. —AB _______________________________________________ FamilyGuy.com

You know what grinds my gears? Text talk, it’s annoying when you’re TEXTING, but when people speak with it, it’s just plain irritating and ridiculous! Why can’t people just say what they mean instead of saying “ikr” or “btw”? Is it that much harder to type “you” instead of “u”? It’s just two letters! And when people take the time to spell words wrong, like “kewl” instead of “cool”, it just makes me want to throw a dictionary at them! Do they want to seem illiterate? When it comes to writing an important letter or essay will they be able to refrain from using their cutesy spellings? And if you’re going to make up acronyms for phrases you could at least tell everyone what you’re saying. Because for all we know, it could just be a bunch of gibberish! Wouldn’t it get annoying to be asked, ”What does that mean?” every time you make your sentence into an acronym? Were not telepaths! Some people might think it’s cute or funny to talk and text like that, but it just annoys most of the people around them! Please do the world a favor and talk normally. THAT’S what grinds my gears! —VR __________________________________________________ You know what grinds my gears? Celebrity couples. They combine their names to make a new one, like Bradgelina. Why do people do that? It’s messed up! It doesn’t make them sound cuter or awesome. Also, with celebrity couples, THEY NEVER LAST! Have you ever heard any couples staying together for a really long time? Sure there are a few but not as many as the break-ups. Remember Kim Kardashian’s marriage only lasted 72 days! We all know that celebrity couple almost never last, but there are still people obsessing over them. All you hear about celebrity couples are, “Oh my god! They’re so cute together!” or, “They shouldn’t be to-
What really grinds my gears is pop up internet scams. Right when I was trying to figure out what to right for this article one pops up says I have a virus and immediately begins its scan of the school computer. Of course, its not really trying to help you its just ruining the computer and the rest of your day. This one I got was extra special because it closed everything I had been working on, which included two articles for the newspaper. Just to go the extra mile as I signed back in to the computer, it just popped right up and I had to sign in again. Again, it was there so I turned off the computer and five minutes later I was back writing the articles the computer said were recovered for me by Word. This was a not-so-fun waste of time when you have deadlines coming up and you are barely awake on Thursday morning in the first 10 minutes of class. It doesn’t help when you think the few words you have actually written are gone forever so thanks again Word. —KS __________________________________________________ Do you know what really grinds my gears? It’s stuttering. I stutter. I have since I was little, and it frustrates me. Stuttering has to be one of the most frustrating things in the world; no, not the world. The world is too small. Stuttering is the most frustrating thing in the universe. Stuttering is the most frustrating when I am trying to answer a question in class, but as soon as I try to answer, I can’t say what I was thinking. It’s like my mouth and my brain don’t want to work together; it’s like they got in a fight in preschool and haven’t gotten over it. Stuttering is also frustrating when I am talking to my friends and I try to say something, but as usual, I can’t and I just stand there, void of the ability to communicate. Stuttering is also scary because when I go to high school or college, I might struggle to really present my ideas well enough to get a good grade. And once again, this time in front of a whole class, I stand there frozen...maybe? All in all, stuttering needs to go away, or people need to be more understanding, and that is what really grinds my gears. —OM

Magician’s Assistant...Not Your Ordinary PE Teacher

Mrs. Burkhalter enjoys being her husband’s assistant in his comedy magic shows.
Have you ever wondered what a teacher’s life is actually like outside of school? What they did before they were a teacher? If there’s been something interesting they’ve done in their life that we don’t know about? Did you know that Mrs. Burkhalter’s husband is a magician, and she is his lovely assistant?
Steve Hamilton (Mr. Burkhalter) is a retired firefighter. He has been performing his comedy magic shows around the world for almost 20 years. He’s even performed all the way in around the world in Shanghai, China and across the country in other states like Indiana, Montana, California, Oregon. Steve also does lots of local shows- fairs, stage shows, festivals, and winter parties that Mrs. Burkhalter loves to throw at home. The “Steve the Pretty Good” show features classic magic tricks (with a little twist), our own Mrs. Burkhalter as his assistant, and various audience members. You can watch some of his live shows at PrettyGoodMagic.com In an interview with Mrs. Burkhalter, she commented, “When someone appears in the box, the audience expects one of those young assistants to pop up. I guess I’m a little old to play the assistant but the audience loves it all the same.” So how did our P.E. teacher get to be the assistant in a magic show? “One day a package arrived, Steve had ordered an illusion kit. He was so excited to get started! He read the instructions, and I got in the box.” said Mrs. Burkhalter, “It was easy and looked cool, so I became the assistant.” When she reappeared after her first illusion, she threw her hands straight up in the air like she was signaling a touchdown. “I was so used to being a P.E. teacher. I had to learn to be graceful and do the ‘TADA!!’ jazz hands after I pop up in an illusion.” Steve’s goal is to do magic on a cruise ship. Doesn’t sound like a bad way to retire.

And while you are outside, you can blend in with the green trees using your given skin for fun (Envy makes you green)! Leo— (July 23—Aug. 21) The internet of these so called “Trolls.” They are the masters of intimidation. They are bigger, MEANER, and their annoyance is increasing rapidly. You alone have the power to stop them. Only YOU can save the internet. Virgo— (Aug. 22—Sept. 22) Start searching the internet the next time you get on it. I’m sure that you’ll discover a fact that will ‘blow your mind!’ Libra—(Sept. 23—October 22) Avoid the bushes, trees, and branches. Wood and thorns will not be very pleasant to you.
