DEAR BULLDOGS, Happy holidays to our fellow students and wonderful staff! We might not be on break yet, but everyone at MBMS needs something to look forward to as we trudge through the final days. Our job as the staff of The Canine Chronicle is to tell your stories and to voice your opinions. We report on what we hear about on social media, the internet, and from you. We listen and take note of what you speak about in classrooms and in the halls. Each and every person at this school contributes to this publication, and we thank you for all of your help! While voicing all of your opinions, we do not disrupt the orderly conduct of this school and ensure it is maintained at the same time. The Canine Chronicle touches upon all of the relevant events that affect both students and staff, such as the top news stories of 2016 and holiday traditions at MBMS. This newspaper voices opinions on the results of the presidential election, movie reviews, and sports updates. Along with this, we have humorous articles such as the horoscope and the What Grinds My Gears. With such a wide variety of topics, The Canine Chronicle has you covered! Sincerely,

CASES OF MUMPS REPORTED On Dec. 3, 22 cases of mumps were reported in Auburn schools, according to Principal Brown. In King County, there were 58 cases (47 probable and 11 confirmed), according to ASD. The district cited Public HealthSeattle and King County and also recommended “getting a dose of the vaccine.” “As of [Dec. 8], 156 students do not have at least one dose of MMR,” ASD district representative Vicki Alonzo said in an email to parents. “This is down from 176 on [Dec. 2].” According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the mumps is “contagious disease caused by a virus, [which] typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, followed by swollen salivary glands.” Many infants and toddlers receive vaccinations to build immunity to this virus. Two vaccinated staff members took sick leave to avoid being exposed of the airborne virus for precautionary reasons, to avoid spreading the illness to their families. As of Dec. 8, schools with confirmed/probable cases were Mt. Baker, Auburn High, Auburn Mountainview, West Auburn, Lea Hill, Olympic, Pioneer, Terminal Park, Gildo Rey, Auburn Riverside, Lakeland Hills, and Dick Scobee. The CDC recommends that “you can protect yourself and your family against mumps with vaccination.”
MBMS Mathletes finished in second place on Dec. 3 at the ninth annual Federal Way Math Contest. The contest was designed to reward the excellence in mathematics. The team completed multiple challenges with individual tests in (40 ciphering questions in 40 minutes and 40 questions in 50 minutes) and a team test in (20 questions in 20 minutes). The Mathletes also sponsored a Holiday Pajama Sock Hop dance for sixth graders on Dec. 16, which occurred after the publication deadline.
ROBOTICS TEAMS FLOURISHES
YEARBOOK DANCE GOES DARK
On Dec. 10, MBMS Robotics teams competed in a regional competition of FIRST LEGO League, with each of the two MBMS teams scoring in the top 5. “The team did an impressive job of carrying themselves with pride and representing [the] school,” robotics teacher Mr. Cowan said in an announcement. Cowan said Bulldog Builders “received a trophy for the core value of teamwork,” and will compete in the regional semifinals in late January. The team currently is looking for opportunities to raise funds for competitions by selling Robotics team tshirts which can be purchased in the main office for 20 dollars.
The lights went out and the MBMS commons glowed On Dec. 9, MBMS Yearbook sponsored the annual “Glow in the Dark Dance” fundraiser for seventh and eighth graders. According to ASB secretary Mrs. Lindell, the dance sold “over 680 dollars in tickets with 185 students attending.” Expenses for decorations, music, and concessions were not available at the time of publication. Eighth grader Ailis McCann thought the music of math teacher Mr. Carter who provided music for the event was mature. “I enjoyed it though,” McCann said.

these Games is just the perfect way to finish," Phelps said, after finishing the Rio Olympics.
Strange, heartbreaking, endearing, and often surprising are all used to describe 2016. From major sports events that captivated millions to shocking news stories that changed the world, 2016 was one of the most eventful years in a long time. For more information on the recent election, turn to page 6.
THE RIO OLYMPICS In Aug. 2016, the Summer Olympics took place in Rio de Janeiro. Despite the looming threat of the Zika virus (which caused several athletes, including American golfer Rory McIlroy, to withdraw), several athletes turned out. American swimmer Michael Phelps medaled six times in what he has said will be his last Olympics appearance before he retires. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt medaled three times, finishing his Olympic career with a 100 percent first place finish rate in the finals. "This is how I wanted to finish my career. I've lived a dream come true. Being able to cap it off with
It will take up to three years for the withdrawal to formally occur, but Prime Minister David Cameron has already chosen to resign from his position, and Theresa May has taken his place. Several students have speculated whether or not this is a smart move. “[It was] not a wise decision [to leave],” said seventh grader Noah Maier, who, like many other students, didn't like the exit.
CUBS WIN! For the first time in 108 years, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, beating the Cleveland Indians in the seventh and final game. After a supposed “curse” was placed on the baseball team after a man was thrown out of Wrigley Field because of his pet goat’s odor, fans across the country are rejoicing, and some say the Cubs have a shot at winning next year, too. “Congratulations to them,” said eighth grader Maria Fabyanchuk, who was not as knowledgeable of the victory as others, but was still just as happy they won.
DEATHS OF 2016 2016 was a sad year for celebrities. Several grieved over the deaths of music icons like rock artist David Bowie, and singer/songwriter Prince. Many actors, including Alan Rickman, known for his role as Severus Snape, and Gene Wilder, often recognized as Willy Wonka, lost their lives this year. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali also passed away, an event that shook sports fans. Not all deaths, however, made everybody cry. Controversial Cuban leader Fidel Castro also died at the age of 90. While his supporters viewed him as revolutionary, others claimed he stifled economic and political freedoms across the world.
BRITAIN PLANS TO LEAVE EUROPEAN UNION. In an political event titled “Brexit” by the public, the United Kingdom has planned to leave the European Union after a referendum was held in June 2016, in which 52 percent of votes were cast in favor of leaving.

CONNOR MACDOUGALL On Nov. 8, many Americans watched as Republican nominee Donald Trump gained momentum and edged out Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in what is considered to be a shocking landslide victory. Leading up to the election, several students thought the victory was sealed, and Clinton would win, including sixth grader Jenna Moon-Earle, who was thoroughly surprised. “I did not predict Trump would win, because I thought Hillary had a better chance at winning,” said Moon-Earle, “because the west side was all democratic.”

Trump’s win has led several students to speculate what Trump will do, and what effect his actions will have on our country. “I hope he fixes social issues, like about racism,” said eighth grader Blake Deshler, who was also surprised by Trump’s landslide victory. After the election, some students came to school with a smile on their face, while others kept their heads down, and told others about their concerns. “Well, a lot of people were sad, and one person said that they already packed their bags,” sixth grader Ashton Seaton said. Some people are having a hard time handling the victory. Green

party nominee Jill Stein has started recounts in Michigan, a state in which Trump won. Hillary Clinton has also contributed to the recounts, but it was no use. A federal judge halted them recently. "A recount as an audit of the election has never been endorsed by any court," said Judge Mark Goldsmith. “It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me,” said Donald Trump at his victory speech. “... ed what he will do as president, and has big plans to follow up on. “We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals,” Trump said, “We’re going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none. And we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it.” Wherever Trump goes from here, we can only hope he makes our country a better place. “And I can only say that while the campaign is over, our work on this movement is now really just beginning,” Trump said.

“Yeah, because Donald Trump is a very successful businessman.”
“You take your chances. I don’t think either one of the candidates was a top selection among the populace. But overall, I think the whole system worked, the Electoral College worked, and so now we get to see what we get in our [Forrest Gump] ‘box of chocolate.’”

MADDY TAYLOR The month of December is filled with the hustle and bustle of buying presents and catching up with family. But, it’s also filled with all sorts of weird national holidays, days like Pretend to Be a Time Traveler Day on Dec. 9, and Monkey Day on Dec. 14 Many people recognize these days by posting a picture on social media. But, some people think that schools should recognize these holidays. Seventh grader Madelyn Brown had lots to say about this. “It would be cool if Mt. Baker celebrated some of the weird holidays” Brown said. “It would make spirit days more fun.’ One of the most interesting holiday that made the Top 10 Weirdest Holidays list was Festivus. This day was made up on a show called Seinfeld so they could get out of work and other events. On Festivus, instead of putting up a tree, you put up an unadorned aluminum pole, and instead of spending
time with family and spreading cheer, you practice the Airing of Grievances which is where your disappointment with everyone, and the Feats of Strength which is where you wrestle with your family. It’s a very strange holiday and that’s why it’s on the Top 10 list. Eighth grader Yesenia Scearcy had a very interesting idea for a new holiday. “If I could make [a new holiday], it would be Yesenia Day where we celebrate Yesenia,” Scearcy said. Another example of how weird some holidays can get is Make up Your Mind Day and No “L” Day, where you can't use the letter L. Many people probably think that holidays like these are “strange” or make no sense, but sixth grader Luke Valdez has a different view on these odd days in December. “Those who want to participate can and those who don’t, don’t have to participate.” Valdez said Some of the holidays like Monkey Day or Bacon Day could be celebrated without a problem, but
others may have a difficult time accepting people who every year celebrate Ninja Day or Make Up Your Mind Day. Sixth grader Erin Hein had lots to say about whether or not we should celebrate these wacky holidays. “These holidays are fun and wacky, but not traditional like Christmas is,” Hein said. “Those holidays involve religion and tradition, these holidays just aren’t as important as those.” There are plenty of people who opt out of celebrating or recognizing these days as actual holidays, but Scearcy said otherwise. “I celebrate doughnut day, friendship day, and pizza day.” Scearcy said proudly. As you can see, December isn’t all about giving gifts and spending time with family. It’s about pretending to be a time traveler and celebrating monkeys.
What is your favorite holiday tradition?
“My favorite holiday tradition is going caroling with my family, because it’s a fun way to express your feelings and a really great way to bond with your family.”
“[My favorite holiday tradition is] decorating the tree.”
“My favorite holiday tradition is when we go to Bellingham and go to midnight mass… Then when we wake up in the morning and we open presents.”
“My favorite holiday tradition is putting up Christmas lights right after Thanksgiving dinner.”

The students of MBMS participate in many holiday traditions. Anything from caroling to decorating ginger bread houses, but what makes it important is we do it with family. “Every Christmas we perform an act, a celebration sort of. We would sing or dance,” eighth grader Anthony Doucette said. “Most of us make fools of ourselves, but we’re great while doing it.” Sixth grader Madilyn Calkins did a game with a pickle one year. “Last year my parents got this pickle ornament from their friends,” Calkins said. “[They] hid a pickle and the person that finds it gets an extra present.” Eighth grader Angelina Pakhynyuk and Calkins spends lots of time with family during the month of holiday songs. “[We] get a tree and decorate it together,” Pakhynyuk said. “My church does a secret Santa and on Christmas day [my family] goes to church. Then, I just hang out with [them].” “[We] go to church on Christmas Eve,” Calkins said. “Sometimes we go on Christmas.” The holidays are a time for all of your loved ones to get together and celebrate what it’s like to be around the
Castillo said. Some students like Calkins have plenty of traditions her family does every year. “We do advent calendars,” Calkins said. “And from my mom’s side, my cousins and I are each assigned a person to do a Christmas card for.” It doesn’t matter if your traditions are weird and goofy. You’re with your
family while doing it which makes it ten times as great. “One year I did a makeup story,” Doucette said. The month of December is the month which brings everyone together. Some of us may not have a tree with presents waiting underneath or food on the table, but as long as we’re with family, it’s special.

ADELINE MAURUS Over the past few years, the amount of books that students have checked out from the MBMS library per year has gone down. “I’ve been here five years, and I’ve been tracking the circulations each month,” librarian Mrs. Clark said. “Five years ago, [the circulation numbers] started to rise each month and then we adopted a new reading series, Springboard, and at that point the circulation went down and [has] been trending down ever since…” According to the circulation records provided by Clark, the amount of books checked out in the past three years has dropped by an average of 334 books per year. “I rarely go to the library because [my family and I] don't have a lot of time to go.” seventh grader Kellie Zackula said. Unfortunately, roughly 36.3 percent of the surveyed MBMS population does not go to a library often, or at all. Along with not wanting to or not being able to go to a

library, social media distracts students from sitting down and reading, with 73 percent of the surveyed students preferring to be on an electronic device. Students that take more rigorous classes often find it difficult to find time to read, as they usually have a larger amount of homework. “[I] have been busy with other school work and homework and [I] just haven't found [any] interest in reading anymore,” eighth grader Ursula JacintoShuskey said. To try and convince students to read more often, language arts and history teacher Mrs. Hubbell has started to encourage teachers to post book recommendations outside of their rooms. “A conference that [I] attended in Texas [inspired me to start this idea].” Hubbell said. “They talked about how creating a culture of reading starts with teachers showing students that they too read, and what they read.” This idea has spread to other teachers too. Language arts teacher Mrs. Durham has started to participate in this also.

“[I haven’t put any] outside my door, but inside [my classroom],” Durham said. Some students, however, don’t realize that these have been put up throughout the school. “No, [I] have not… because my classes are very far apart and it [does] not give me time,” seventh grader Aracely Garcia said. However, many teachers believe that reading affects their student’s grades. “The more time you spend reading, the stronger your reading and writing skills will be,” special education teacher Mr. Cope said. “I have noticed that the students who read for pleasure write better, are confident readers, and are more eloquent speakers.” Along with teachers, the majority of students believe that reading affects their grades in school. The students that do read often find the results helpful. “The more you read, the more knowledge you will have.,” sixth grader Janine Park said. “Also, reading will make me understand hard text, which will help me in math problems,”

This newest release served as Rowling’s screenwriting debut as she worked side by side with fellow director David Yates who has directed multiple films for the Harry Potter series including Order of Phoenix, Half -Blood Prince, and both Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, the two worked side by side with Don Fogler as Jacob Kowalski and Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein throughout most of the movie. The audience also introduced to many new creatures including the niffler, thunderbird, and swooping evil, just to name a few.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was unveiled Nov. 18 as the ninth and newest edition to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. The film has earned about $607 million dollars worldwide making it the tenth highest grossing film of 2016. The movie follows British wizard Newt Scamander and his adventures through the secretive American wizarding community of New York in the year 1926. These events took place almost seventy years before Fantastic Beasts and where to find them would be included on Harry Potter’s required book list.

The movie itself was inspired by the published “textbook” that Rowling released in 2001. The film has received essentially positive reviews although some were surprisingly underwhelmed ,contemplating if the latest movie will live up to the Harry Potter legacy. “I was a bit disappointed. I did not engage with the main character. I thought he was weird and not a very good actor,” said language arts teacher Ms. Ryan, “I didn’t like the story line either.” But overall positive reviews came from the media, as well as MBMS students and staff, “I loved Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them because it is funny and

action packed,” eight grader Joseph Haws said. “I liked Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, because the story line was really nice and it gave me a thrilling joy to watch.” said seventh grader Mineva Misiaita. To add to the excitement of many Potter fans, Rowling herself has hinted, as well as confirmed, that there will be a series spanning over five movies, and she’s already almost finished screenwriting the second. “Yay, I’m so happy about that.” eight grader Grace Couey said. It can be expected that the second edition will be released around 2018, so start preparing for your next magical movie experience.

it made approximately $635 million worldwide. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch, who also played Sherlock Holmes in the live action TV show) had used his hands to save millions of lives. He was involved in a car accident which damaged the nerves in his hands and could no longer trust his hands when doing his job as a surgeon. Strange then journeys far, seeking a cure for his hands and finds himself at the Kamar-Taj, an old temple, where he encounters The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). The Ancient One is designed as a male in the comic book but they switch it up a little in the movie. He is taught about the mystical arts and the martial arts. Along with multiple spells, he learns to use the Eye of Agamotto, which can control time, and the Cloak of Levitation, which helps you levitate in midair. He must defeat a former student of The Ancient One, Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), before the Dark Dimension, where the villain Dormammu (Jonathan

Adams) resides, engulfs Earth. Strange teams up with Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and KamarTaj’s librarian Wong (Benedict Wong) to defeat Dormammu. “The giddily enjoyable Doctor Strange is part of Marvel’s strategy for world domination, yet it’s also so visually transfixing, so beautiful and nimble that you may even briefly forget the brand,” Monhola Dargis of the NY Times said. Doctor Strange is a must for lovers of fantasy, action, and comedy. It is great for a family with children ten and older but they might not understand the storyline. There are multiple objectionable words but none that hasn’t been said before in Marvel movies, and the opening scene has Kaecilius decapitating the librarian’s head. “Doctor Strange is a great Marvel movie, all the special effects makes everything weird and fun and overall makes you go ‘ooh’.....Can wait for Spider-Man Homecoming,” eighth grader Christopher Henriquez said on the survey. I suggest that you stay after the first credits in order to see a short clip of Baron Mordo. Not going to spoil anything so you have to see for yourself.

NYA BAAD Aries (March 21- April 19): This year you feel as if you need to give back to people and the environment, so you will participate in community service.
NYA BAAD
WINTER BREAK Winter break is coming up soon this Dec. 21, and students will be coming back to school on Jan. 4. Although it will be different than last year, the chances of us getting snow are very high as we have already gotten snow this year. With the availability of snow, you can go sledding, have snowball fights, make a snowman, or make snow forts. Will you be outside in the snow this winter break?
SCHOOL PLAY TRYOUTS
Mr. Char has announced this school year’s play The Sound of Music and many students are excited. Some characters include Liesl von Trapp, Friedrich von Trapp, Louisa von Trapp, Kurt von Trapp, Brigitta von Trapp, Marta von Trapp, and Gretl von Trapp, Maria Rainer, and Captain Georg von Trapp. This play has been a favorite of many people and just one of those classic musicals. Will you be trying out for MBMS’s school play?
SCHOOL DANCE ATTENDANCE There is one word to describe school dances. Awkward. We’re only about 11-14 years old and are coming after school to go into a cramped room that smells like teenagers BO. Although many will encourage you to go, as it is a good way to bond with friends and dance your heads off, the glow in the dark dance is quite an experience as you should go to every one of MBMS’s school dances. Will you be attending any of MBMS’s school dances?
INSTALLING STANDING ROCK PIPELINE The Standing Rock Pipeline is an oil pipeline that will go from Standing Rock, North Dakotato Illinois. That is approximately 1,058.7 miles and will go onto the land of the Sioux tribe. The Native Americans are protesting to have the pipe rerouted or not built at all. They want this because the oil pipeline would be going through/under their water supply, therefore if the pipe broke or leaked their water, would be contaminated. Do you think this pipeline should be installed?
TRUMP PROTESTS After Donald Trump was elected president, there have been many protesters who feel the election was “rigged” and that Hillary Clinton should be America’s next president. Although there has been many protesters, little violence or rampaging has occurred. People are just expressing their feelings about America’s future 49th president. Do you agree with the people protesting Donald Trump's presidency?
CONTINUED TAINTED BANANAS
[
Nigrospora is a red fungus found on the inside of bananas. It has a powdery or sticky consistency, and can be the red color of blood. These bananas are not bad for your health, but they do look pretty disgusting. Multiple staff members have experienced these infected fruits, including Ms. Lacy. She felt nauseous after biting into the banana, but the feelings she had were “supposedly psychosomatic.” Do you think the banana fungus will be a repeated phenomenon? 24

My
PREDICTABLE HALLMARK MOVIES You know what grinds my gears? Hallmark Christmas movies!! I can’t believe I am saying this but they are worse than ROMANTIC-COMEDIES. SPOILER ALERT: It all works out in the end. The guy gets the girl, the parent makes it home, and people are brought together by their pet shenanigans. Or when the main characters literally bump into each other while trying to buy a Christmas tree, then BAM! They are in love after one look IN. EVERY. SINGLE. MOVIE. Don’t get me started on the ending, when the high -pitched sounds of an orchestra playing in the background as the main characters engage in a WAY. TOO. LONG. KISS. I cannot take another corny song, or fancy letters at the end of the movie TELLING YOU THAT THE MOVIE IS OVER. Can we talk about when a parent tries to interfere with their child's love life? THEY CAN FIGURE IT OUT WITHOUT YOU! Please, please, can someone come up with a better movie title? I mean, come on, A Cookie Cutter Christmas? Uumm, I wonder what it’s about, I’ll tell you- it’s about COOKIES!!! And that, my friends, is what really grinds my gears. —ELLIE WALTER ____________________________________
EARLY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION You know what grinds my gears? People who start celebrating Christmas two months earlier than necessary. I mean, you walk into a store before Halloween, and your eyes are assaulted by red, green, and silver. By the time December comes around, I’m already tired of seeing those colors.

Then come the dreaded Christmas songs. Don’t get me wrong, I like them just as much as the next person, just not in October. That is far too early. The same fifteen songs get played over and over again until they start to mesh together and sound like the one song. I wouldn’t care about this so much if all of the radio stations I like to listen to while I’m in the car didn’t switch to this annoyingly repetitive music. Yet they do, except for one or two that continuously play music that I hate. Then the decorations. If you’ve driven or walked home at night within the past month, you have most likely seen the multi-colored lights strung on people’s roofs. I don’t want to walk home from my bus stop in the beginning of November and see Christmas wreaths hung on people’s doors. And that is what grinds my gears. —ADELINE MAURUS ____________________________________
SAD CHRISTMAS MOVIES You know what grinds my gears? Sad Christmas movies. The holiday season is beautiful, full of glimmering lights reflecting off of snow… it’s supposed to be merry and happy. But sad holiday movies? TOTALLY kills the spirit. Yeah, when I think of AMAZING Christmas movies, I definitely think of bawling my eyes out next to a cozy little fire. It’s super cliché, but I’d much rather watch a stupid comedy about a mall Santa getting fired than someone’s dog dying on Christmas Eve. If it’s a decent storyline with a good plot, with a sad moment that adds to it, then sure, I respect that. But in basically all the sad holiday movies, THE MOVIE MAKER PEOPLE JUST WANT US TO CRY AND CRY AND THEY DON’T EVEN RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I listen to holiday music on the radio a lot of my day at home. Occasionally, a song from a particular
mbms barks
sad movie comes on. The song is at a similar degree of sadness. Nope. Nope. Nope. That’s turning off. Bye-bye, now. Hey, if you like sad holiday movies, good for you. But just leave me in my little corner watching Elf. And that’s what grinds my gears. —JEZEL BROWN ___________________________________
PINE NEEDLES Do you know what grinds my gears? Pine needles. Those tiny needles end up in EVERY SQUARE INCH of your house. The second after you vacuum another ginormous pile of them manage to fall off the tree and work their way through your house. It’s like they have a mind of their own and just decide to use it for evil. Did they find some weird special where you could pay for gravity to yank them down EVERY TWO SECONDS? Because if so, they need to cancel that subscription. Even the ones on FAKE TREES FALL DOWN. Pine needles have no purpose and need to leave Earth and be replaced by new and better needles because all they do is ANNOY EVERYONE. Pine needles aren't even needles, they’re just little green stubs of nothingness. Also, the smell of pine needles isn’t even that great. To be honest, it makes my head hurt because of how strong the scent is. It just lingers for eternity throughout your house and only leaves when you get rid of the tree. WHICH SHOWS HOW USELESS THEY ARE. So, thanks for nothing, pine needles. And that's what grinds my gears. —MADDY TAYLOR

LILLIAN ZIMMERMAN On Black Friday, Pullman hosted the 109th Apple cup with the two rivals Washington and Washington State. Washington won 45-17 making it one of UW’s biggest wins in years. “I had very high hopes, I also knew that it was going to take a lot to beat the Huskies,” Carnahan said. One of the biggest games of the season, as the two rivals battled it out in the Apple Cup leaving both WSU fans and UW fans anxious during kickoff. “I thought it was going to be a lot closer. I was very discouraged that it was essentially over within five minutes because of the way they played,” Mrs. Carnahan said. The Huskies scored four touchdowns in the first quarter leaving the Cougars to score a field goal putting three points on the scoreboard going into the second quarter. “Well I think it was a great score. I wish it was a closer
JACK MORRELL It is finally that time of year! For the first time in a while, this part of Washington is expected to receive snow! You should take advantage of your snow days, because they definitely won’t be common. Aside from your average snowman, here are some ideas to help you take more advantage of your day off school, or even a day during break. One activity that is definitely worthwhile is an action packed sled ride. Jackson Morton, seventh grader, likes to sled whenever he gets the chance. “There is this big hill by my house,” Morton said. “Me and all my friends like to go down it whenever we get enough snow.”

Fortunate for Morton and many others, snow is looking like a very strong possibility. Even if we don't get that much snow, there are tons of places east of the mountains in Washington that are getting lots of it. For all of you winter athletes, there are plenty of places to go ski or snowboard, such as Stevens Pass or the Summit in Snoqualmie. There are many great slopes to go down, which is a fantastic way to spend your snow day. Even if you don't like skiing or snowboarding, another great way to spend your snow day is having an intense snowball fight with friends. According to the Mt. Baker Canine Chronicle survey, 72.4 percent of participants voted a snowball fight to be their

favorite snow day activity. This is definitely a great game to play with the whole family. Other families, enjoy traveling during the holiday season, and sixth grader, Cameron Rhodes, hopes to be visiting Oregon this winter. “We might go spend some time down there” Rhodes said, “I’m really looking forward to it.” On the other hand, there are people who enjoy spending snowy days inside, watching movies or even baking. These ideas are definitely great ways to keep yourself away from the cold outside. For many people, this is the best time of year. Families come around, traditions continue or begin, and when snow incorporates with all of that, it's basically tying
