SIPS HOUSE BY THE RIVER Vacation Housing Cherette ArchiCAD, Photoshop, Model Making, Hand Drafting Sept-Oct 2017: ARCH201, Montgomery College Studio Great Falls, VA

In this program, I designed a SIPS House in Great Falls, VA for a couple as their abode for vacations. The house is set in a standard 33â&#x20AC;&#x2122;x16â&#x20AC;&#x2122; pre-fabricated steel system with on-grid photovoltaic panels, an underneath warmboard, and a tankless water heater.

I, inspired by old Ethiopian architecture, employed a natural heaviness in my

design to fit in the mystical, foresty environment. The house uses stucco cladding to reduce moisture damages and create tranquility. The windows correspond with the prevailing wind and sunlight. They give people comfort and serenity inside but do not pacify then into laziness; instead, they lure people into exploring around the house.

Astronomy Department and Planetarium, Montgomery College Hand Drafting, Model Making, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop Oct-Dec 2017: ARCH201, Montgomery College Studio Rockville, MD

In this teamwork project, we were assigned a schematic design of a proposed astronomy department in the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College. We communicated with the Astronomy Department and decided to use “FORMATION” as the parti, with particular inspirations from the creation of an accretion. During the process we decided to simplify the complicated

astronomic process by aligning five processional cubes in slight tilts (each tilt in relation with 23.5°), connecting them with glass joints to represent the mystique and unpredictability of our universe. We used the major walkway of the campus as the axis of our building, such procession also marked by the volume of each cube, leading to a glorious planetarium.

PRISM TOWARDS ENTITY Memorial Museum for the Architect

This program is a memorial gellery of myself in Kiawah Island, SC. I first envisioned my career: I see myself raised in China, studied in the US, later moving to Ethiopia and Lebanon for urban works before retiring in the US. My beliefs would be one of a mediator, who, in a cross-disciplinary fashion, resolve social and historic tension by elegant, sensitive mediation through design.

The parti, “PRISM TOWARD ENTITY”, has three concepts: “Experience”, “Distillation”, and “Entity”. Each pavilion presents a specific realm I work in, connected by four distillation halls which refine each period and lead the “Sanctum Santorum”, a holy space storing my important manuscripts and a garden pronouncing the “entity” of life.

DRAWINGS ON SITE

I reflect on my trip in Italy, Summer 2018 as educational, horizon-broadening, and friendship-binding. During my fiveweek stay in Italy, I was overwhelmingly impressed by the hospitality of the Italians and the on-site experiences with both traditional and modern tech-

niques to document and restore the heritage of Villa Arianna in the Vesuvius region. Besides the field studies, I was fortunate to make trips around Paestum, Salerno and Sicily as well.
