WHY FEED A WHOLE FOOD DIET TO YOUR PET COMPANION

WHY SHOUD YOU STOP FEEDING PROCESSED FOOD TO YOUR PET COMPANIONS? The world leading veterinary nutritionists agree on the best way to provide optimum pet companion nutrition. These are vets who have done years of research in the field of veterinary nutrition. Recent I have been on several raw food blogs and could not believe the amount of miss information, lies and complete nonsense being pass off as fact. As a professional nutritionist I have been studying and researching animal nutrition at some of the best school the world has to offer since 1998. In this time I have found that most of the research that has been done in the field of animal nutrition all come to the same conclusion and agree that non-processed species specific diet plans provided the best chance at optimum health. Dr. William Pollak D.V.M, said that 74.7% of common diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be eliminated without medical intervention over a period of one year with proper diet modifications and an understanding of the healing process as exhibited through healing episodes. Approaching disease from the perspective of health is the most powerful means of eliminating disease". According to holistic vets, even the top quality kibble or canned pet foods with the very best nutrients are still cooked, processed and dead food that have no health or life enhancing nutritional qualities. Dr. Dennis Risner, DVM - "The most common and most visible symptoms of nutritionally caused deficiencies are allergies of one kind or another. Because many commercial pet foods are woefully deficient in key nutrients, the long term effect of feeding such foods makes the dog hypersensitive to its environment. Alicia Ford, DVM - "Fresh, raw foods contain the highest level of enzymes and these enzymes assist in digestion. Cooked foods and dry convenient diets have been denatured and are devoid of enzymes: life-promoting elements. While they may maintain life they do not promote optimum health or longevity! Food enzymes are very sensitive and are easily destroyed by low moist heat (105-118 degrees F). Dry heat around 150 degrees F. Internal enzymes are damaged by factors, such as chlorine in drinking water, certain medicines, air pollution and chemical additives."

Dr. Susan Anthony, DVM - "Most of the chronic diseases we commonly see in animals have an immune basis, e.g. diabetes, allergies, asthma, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, repeated ear infections, cancer, etc. While they can be cured through the careful use of homeopathy, the road to cure can be a long one -- often years if the animal has had years of disease. Transfer factors can significantly shorten the course, by giving a much needed balancing effect to the immune system. If the immune system is overactive as in allergies, ear infections, asthma, diabetes, or hypothyroidism, Transfer Factor can balance this overactivity so the system is not attacking its own organs, overreacting to things that shouldn’t be perceived as a threat. If, conversely, the immune system is under-active as in mange, parasites, viral infections, or cancer, eModerndog organic nutrition express & veterinary prescriptive nutrition meals can clearly stimulate the immune system to better meet the challenges it has to face." There are also testimonials about animals cured of cancer and other chronic disease using Pet Nutrition Systems Veterinary Prescriptive Nutrition Service. I have included testimonial to facilitate interaction and support. Dr. George Pack, MD, a cancer specialist at Cornell medical School said "The only real defense against cancer is the immune system. Almost every animal has cancer cells present at times in their bodies. If our immune system is working properly, these cells are killed or reabsorbed by our defense system before they begin to grow and threaten our health." Dr. Miller, MD Robertson Clinic: "Two cats, both about 8 years old, had severe diabetes. It was impossible to get the insulin requirements adjusted. They had lost weight to a point that they were skin and bones. Both cats had no quality of life left. After two week of being on Pet Nutrition Systems VPN meals we were able to get their insulin requirements adjusted. It is now 4 months and they have regained their weight and have a great quality of life and health." Paul Winter, DVM: "Pet Nutrition Systems catering menu & VPN services have turned out to be the most effective and versatile products I have ever used in my 28-year veterinary practice. Here are a few examples: A cat with leukemia, an oral tumor, and posterior paralysis due to a spinal tumor, was very ill and emaciated. One month after PNS's VPN service, there was some regression of the

oral tumor, restored appetite with some weight gain, and increased sociability. Four months later, he continues to improve, regaining normal weight, 75% regression of her oral tumor, and regaining use of hind legs and tail. Sammy, a 5-year-old golden, with RPI was treated with conventional drug therapy for 12 weeks and yet continued to deteriorate. At week 12 I started my patient on Pet Nutrition Systems handmade Prescriptive food. Within three week, he showed noticeable improvement, and within 30 days, he was able to show. Since his full recovery 4 months ago, Sammy has continued to show at his original performance level. Dr. Winter says that he has used this service as stand-alone and in conjunction with allopathic therapies in the following cases with excellent results: CANCER: Canine lipomas, Canine/feline hepatic tumors, Equine squamous cell carcinoma, Equine melanomas; Feline leukemia, oral tumors. VIRAL/BACTERIAL: Upper and lower respiratory infections, Canine/feline dermatoses, Equine/bovine scours, Equine septic arthritis, Feline abscesses. PARASITIC/FUNGAL/AUTOIMMUNE: E.P.M., Feline and equine fungal dermatitis, and Feline autoimmune gingivitis. Melanie Taylor wrote a testimonial of the experience she had with her own dog who came down with distemper: "...Blood studies confirmed distemper and showed a white cell count (lymphocytes) of only 264 slightly more than ten percent of normal. our vet plus a second out-of-state consulting vet, an expert in distemper were very sympathetic and advised me to prepare myself to euthanize Joy. Knowing little to nothing about canine distemper, I turned to the internet and luckily saw Daryll Chester’s services claiming to enhances and stimulates the body's own immune system to fight against all pathogens, viral or otherwise. My thirty years in medicine told me this was the only solution. I hurriedly called a local distributor to get the product and started Joy on the Organic Bison VPN formula . Over the next four weeks all cough and mucus drainage ceased. Joy's follow-up blood count had risen to normal range at 2217. William Winter DVM: "Following my great success recommending raw natural diets, I began to explore other aspects of PNS products and services. To this day I do not believe that I have ever discovered a faster way of healing that is as powerful. I have recommended Daryll Chester's services as a behaviorist and now as a nutritionist since 1992 It can be said that I will start every chronic patient on a Pet Nutrition Systems detox program starting with a fast, the detox pills and PNS Detox Formulations and then continuing with a whole food organic recipe."

A balanced & varied nutritional plan is the key component for maintaining your pet's healthy immune system, healthy body, clear mind and resistance to disease. Pet Nutrition Systems recommends that you have a nutritional plan for your pet (s) that has a rotation of several recipes to provide all the elements necessary for optimum health. No one formula, dish or formulation is going to provide all the nutrients needed for peak health. Feeding high end commercial food may provide the required AAFCO minimum daily requirements but not what is required for optimum health. Commercial food ingested by animals on a regular basis will cause imbalanced in terms of major nutrients and anti-oxidants. Nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, as well as exposures to various chemicals, drugs and toxins, present a continual immunological challenge which can suppress overall immune function, especially in those animals genetically susceptible to immune dysfunction (immune deficiency, autoimmunity, allergies). Nutritional Management Many veterinarians treating animals suffering from immunologic diseases appreciate that alternative nutritional management is an important step in minimizing their patients' environmental challenges. The results of this approach have been remarkable. Standard commercial diets containing synthetic chemical preservatives are replaced with whole home made or balanced raw food from a local vender. A variety of individual diets can be developed by owners in consultation with their veterinarian and a nutritionist. While animals treated in this way sometimes experience complete remission of symptoms, most show a 75% or greater improvement of their existing condition. This holistic approach to diet is combined with the minimal amount of drug therapy required to extend the clinical remission and enhance the well-being and longevity of the patient. It is easy to implement, employs a common sense methodology and is inexpensive. The clients and patients like it, and best of all, it works! whole food diet plan Achieving optimum health can come from many different routes. I have tried to detail some of the basic questions that you may have which will hopefully get your pet onto the right dietary diet track. People have different ideas about the raw, prey molding, species-specific whole food diets and if you find it all a bit confusing. DO NOT to go back to commercial foods, but start thinking about what is best for your dog or cat.

Start with the basics - a range of different raw meat protein sources such as chicken, beef, rabbit, bison, quail, fish and eggs. For the majority of raw or whole food feeders - chicken and beef are the base of the majority of their dogs meals and chicken and fish for their cats. You can also use what is available locally lamb, beef, venison, duck, rabbit, kangaroo, pig, raw whole fish. You get the picture. Variety is best!

Where possible you want to avoid using animal protein that has been raised with hormones shots, bad non species-specific feed and unhealthy living quarters. For example, avoid beef that was raised in feedlots. Preferably the food should be as organic, free range and natural as possible. Feeding organic or free range raw, whole food and/or home prepared meals cheaper to feed than commercial dog foods, made by not having all those vet visits to fix your dogs' allergies, failing organs, digestive issues, etc. Are you asking yourself yet, "why hasn't my vet recommended this?" Yes, I would ask that of them too. Unfortunately most vets receive very little education at vet school on companion pet diet. Why should I feed a whole food diet plan to my pet? A whole food, raw or home cooked diet provides a range of benefits that commercial dog diets can never hope to even closely match. The benefits include: 1. Less pet odor 2. Naturally cleans teeth - no need for toothbrushes, de-scaling jobs, or gum disease 3. Much less stools produced - they are firm, and turn chalky after a couple of days 4. decreased or non-existent vet bills (your dogs are healthier!) 5. mirrors what a dog would be naturally eat in the wild - even the modern day dog and cat would have a better diet scavenging than what they are fed with commercial food. 6. Kittens and puppies develop at a more appropriate rate - and quick growth spurts are avoided.

Why is commercial dog food not good for my pet? 1. Feline and canine food should never be processed. It should be fed in a raw natural state like nature intended. processing a dog's food ruins most of the nutritional value. The 10 -20% vegetables and/or fruits used for added bioavailable vitamins, antioxidants and minerals should be broken down for ease of digestion. (steamed, boiled etc)

2. Both cats and dog should have access to raw meaty bones. These clean their teeth, work and develop their neck and jaw muscles, and the chewing action prepares their stomach for the incoming food mass. Chewing bones also slows down the eating process considerably, making it far harder for a cat and dog to over eat. 3. Most dog foods have as their main ingredient cereals (ground corn, wheat or other grains- the main ingredient your dog should be eating is meat. It is these very dietary imbalances that cause a range of problems such as allergies, organ failure and cancer. Even if it isn’t the first two or three ingredients listed they will make up a larger percentage of the diet than needed or beneficial to achieving optimum health. 4. Commercial dog foods are laden with preservatives, colors (dyes), and salt. They have additives to make the food taste better, look better to us, maintain a long shelf live and added nutrients that were cooked out by the processing of the ingredients. 5. The majority of commercial dog and cat foods have far too much carbohydrates in them. High levels of carbohydrates are linked to over-eating, diabetes, weight gain, and numerous other problems. Dogs should eat a diet with only a small amount of carbs and vegetables. Cat should have a diet of over 85% meat protein. 6. There is no substitute for a good source of raw meat. 7. Your vet is most probably recommending a commercial diet because of financial inducements and a lack of independent learning.

Why do so many people still feed their Pets commercial foods? commercial pet food companies have got the advertising part down amazingly well. They have entered the market at every point. With some companies, breeders and vets get major discounts and kick-backs for selling their product. They sponsor dog shows, they advertise in dog magazines, they get high profile people (including vets) to talk about their product. There are also considerable kickbacks vets, vet schools, and breeders can receive from recommending a commercial diet. And most importantly, their advertising campaigns are slick, and tend to make people feel guilty if they feed any other way. And people are suckers for good advertising. Let me make this very clear to you, I make no money from recommending a raw diet, so you can be assured, by making such recommendations, I get no financial kickbacks, nor will ever seek any. As a breeder of dogs I could make a small fortune by letting my dogs be in dog food commercials, and by selling on commercial dog foods. I only recommend feeding Whole food because I want your pet to get the diet that will make them the healthiest that they can possibly be.

How about pre-packaged raw foods? Pre-packed raw foods are entering the market in a big way. However, for the most part, they are inappropriate food stuffs. Here's just some of the problems with them: 1. Different standards for packaging dog food than for packaging human foods 2. The denaturing process of the meat allow the manufacturer to and too much water, bi-product and other additives to make more profit. Most of these companies are riding the new wave of commercial feeding and are producing the cheapest possible product to meet the demand. I suggest you thaw the food out and determine if you would eat it or not before feeding it to you pet. 3. 2-5 times more expensive per feeding than the quality catering companies. 4. Usually, they are ground food which is not species appropriate nor based on a nutritionally balanced meal. Yes they meet the AAFCO MINIMUM standard, put this is not the standard you want to use to feed your pet by. 5. Contain unnecessary supplements

But what about bacteria on raw chicken? Dogs have an amazing immunity system specifically designed to eat all manner of bacteria. And a healthy whole food fed pet manages those bacteria without a problem. E-coli, salmonella, etc are found on raw chicken, but these bacteria are also found in your fridge, in your sink, on your floor, in your backyard, in your car, on the footpath, down at the park, and perhaps in your bed! Interestingly, the only cases I have heard of dogs dying from e-coli or salmonella, were dogs fed commercial dog foods. Your dog and cats have a high level of acidity in their digestive tract and have the ability to live off of dead meat and flesh for days after a kill. The most important thing is to wash your hands thoroughly after feeding your dogs, and even after cutting up meat for your own meals. Our digestive systems are not quite as robust as our dogs, so we must protect ourselves. You may use a spray bottle containing white vinegar that can be sprayed about when you need some disinfecting. I have been feeding my animals a raw and whole food for over 20 years, and have yet to have a problem with bacterial infections with my dogs. They are so healthy that they rarely go to the vet clinic! Additionally I have raised a number of working therapy dog litters all successfully on a raw and whole food diet.

What supplements should I feed? To supplement or not to supplement! There are some people out there and pharmaceutical companies making a load of money off gullible people! In almost every single case, the feeding of supplements is a complete waste of time and money. Most supplements are not bio-available and pass through your pet’s digestive tract too quickly to be absorbed. Secondly, your pet’s food should be offering all the nutrients needed from a natural source not a manmade source. If you have spare money to throw around, donate it to a shelter or rescue.

My vet doesn't think that feeding raw is any good. Then your vet needs some serious re-educating and you might want to consult a veterinary nutritionist or a holistic veterinarian. Keep in mind that vets are told very little about dog diet at university. In fact, in some universities, reps from the dog food companies come and do presentations on dog diet, as part of the curriculum.

Many vets get their education on pet diets by pet food reps. and many vets make a lot of money by retailing pet food. If you have a vet that doesn't want to be re-educated, or will not discuss options, then hopefully you cwill at the very least get a second opinion or find a better educated vet. Given that we now live in the age of the Internet, there is no excuse for vets not to be educated on all feeding options. Cornell, Penn, UC Davis and other school have plenty of continuing educational classes and studies one can read. there are also plenty of veterinarians on the Internet who would gladly converse with other vets about nutrition being used as a tool for healing. That being said, there are plenty of vets out there who realize that there are significantly better alternatives to commercial dog food. I will gladly help you find a few in your area if you need the help. Closing I have dedicated my life’s work to service animals and the service of animals. Through my new company Pet Nutrition Systems we offer free email or phone animal nutrition consultation services. When considering a diet plan to feed your pet companion consider an whole food, species specific, non-commercially processed diet.
