GPS 2012 Bigger Than Ever Welcome to Global Petroleum Show (GPS) – the meeting place for the global oil and gas industry! Organizers of GPS are pleased to host over 60,000 registered attendees from 95 countries and 2,200 exhibiting companies this year, with expanded exhibit space now covering 700,000 net square feet. Global Petroleum Show began as a small regional event back in 1968 at Stampede Park in the Big 4. The brainchild of local businessman Ward Brandow, it was then known as “Flare Square,” due to the display of natural gas flaring techniques – something of a novelty back then. Over the next 30 years, the event evolved to become National Petroleum Show and grew in size and recognition. In 2002, in honour of Calgary hosting the World Petroleum Congress, the event became Global Petroleum Show (GPS). GPS is now Canada’s largest energy event, and one of the largest oil and gas related exhibitions on the planet. Coined by attendees as “the meeting place for the global oil and gas industry,” GPS brings delegations, presentations and exhibits from

Companies Feeling the Gas Pinch

CASING RUNNING TOP TO BOTTOM innovation is our edge

But the outlook improves beyond 2012, experts say Oversupply will continue to play a significant role in Canadian natural gas production for the remainder of 2012. Large producers such as Encana and Chesapeake Energy Corp. are reducing the pace of natural gas production due to oversupply. Encana is targeting capacity reductions of about 600 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) compared to 2011. The company says it’s clear that a continued reduction of drilling activity will be required to restore market balance. “We continue to see cause for optimism for higher natural gas prices in the approval of natural gas exports and export facilities, coal plant retirements, increased industrial demand for ethane and other NGLs, and gas-to-liquids projects,” said Randy Eresman, Encana CEO. While hopeful an improvement is on the horizon, companies will continue to feel the pinch throughout 2012. TransCanada saw decreased profits in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period a year ago. “A very warm winter, historically low natural gas prices and planned maintenance outages at Bruce Power impacted earnings in the first quarter of 2012,” said Russ Girling, TransCanada’s president and chief executive officer. The National Energy Board of Canada’s latest short-term outlook says a surplus of natural gas in North America will persist into 2014, reducing incentives to drill. Although the oilsands’ demand for natural gas will continue to grow, the board’s moderate price scenario predicts drilling for dry gas will stay low. “For the mid-range price case, oversupply conditions continue to drive 2012 Canadian and U.S. natural gas prices below those experienced in 2011,” the board said. “After 2012 prices gradually rise but not enough for much dry gas drilling to become economic.” Martin King, energy commodities analyst with FirstEnergy Capital, echoed that prediction at the Calgary Petroleum Club’s May breakfast meeting. “I think most people agree that 2012 will be the bottom of the pricing cycle,” he said. “It’s just a question of how long will that bottom last and how low will it be. We do think 2013 and 2014 will have stronger pricing.” In order for that to happen, injection rates must be slowed considerably and more demand for the product is needed, he added. Analysts predict that 2012 may see 800 billion cubic feet of gas in storage in Canada. “Eight hundred bcf of storage has never been seen before,” King said.

Oklahoma is Not Only on the Forefront of Traditional Energy Development, but has Truly Become a Unconventional Resource Capitol of the World Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin and Energy Secretary Mike Ming will be leading a delegation of Oklahoma oil and gas companies to the Global Petroleum Show to showcase the numerous business opportunities available in the State for the oil and gas industry. According to independent studies cited in Governor Fallin’s Oklahoma First Energy Plan, in 2009, production and drilling activities supported approximately one-third of Oklahoma’s gross state product, and in fiscal year 2011, gross production tax collections accounted for nearly $1 billion. The industry directly supports more than 71,000 jobs, representing almost 3.5% of the state’s workforce, and industry activity combines to support nearly 300,000 Oklahoma jobs or almost 15% of the workforce. This means a businessfriendly climate that understands and appreciates the role of traditional energy, which translates into tremendous opportunity for business growth in the oil and gas industries.

Oklahoma Oil & Gas Facts & Figures •

In 2011, Oklahoma produced more than 74 million bbls of oil and slightly under 1.9 Tcf of natural gas, maintaining its status as one of the nation’s leading energy producing states. • In 2009, Oklahoma ranked eighth in the United States in terms of total energy production. • More than 95% of that energy came in the form of gas (81%) and oil (15%). • Oklahoma is home to Chesapeake Energy, Devon Energy, Continental Resources, and Sandridge Energy, four of the nation’s leading energy companies and pioneers in developing the unconventional energy resources that have reshaped America’s energy future. • In addition to Oklahoma’s leading exploration and production companies, there are presently over 200 oil field service companies located throughout the state. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have unlocked tremendous new resource potential in shale plays throughout the United States, dramatically changing the future of energy in America. According to Oklahoma Secretary of Energy, Mike Ming, “The U.S. is experiencing a revolution in new energy supplies of both oil and natural gas that began to really materialize in the mid2000s. In January, 2012 U.S. monthly gas production reached an all-time high.” This energy boom has translated into enormous business opportunities for oil and gas companies and service providers who have been supporting the unconventional resource plays across the country. In addition to newfound supplies from the resource plays, Oklahoma is also seeing revitalized potential from plays many considered played-out. For example, in the Granite Wash and the Cleveland and Tonkawa tight sand formations, in northwestern Oklahoma’s Anadarko basin, producers are unlocking enormous new supplies where only marginal production could be achieved with traditional

THE

vertical wells. The key has been horizontal well technology and tertiary, or Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) efforts. CO2 EOR potential, for example, offers recoverable reserves estimated at more than 20 billion bbls, an amount greater than all the oil that has been produced in Oklahoma since 1900. Given the current Energy “Renaissance” taking place in Oklahoma, Governor Mary Fallin is setting the stage for the State to become one of the key suppliers of domestically produced energy for the United States by drafting and implementing a progressive energy plan that is both good for business but also for the environment. Instead of giving up on its traditional oil and gas resources, Governor Fallin’s plan incentivizes the incorporation of new technologies that will make the extraction of oil and gas resources much more efficient and environmentally friendly. In addition, the plan incentivizes traditional industries (ie: Automotive) to develop technologies that run off of natural gas rather than less environmentally friendly energy sources. “We are realistic whilst Washington is idealistic,” said Mike Ming, Oklahoma Secretary of Energy, “our approach is much more affordable and practical which will ultimately help Oklahoma continue to grow its economy and create jobs.” Oklahoma’s oil and natural gas industry is entering a renaissance period of development and innovation. “The industry has fueled double-digit revenue growth for the state, despite being beset by challenges on the federal level,” said Mary Fallin.

Q&A with Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin 1) Why are you attending the Global Petroleum Show? The Oklahoma delegation is at the Global Petroleum Show to support the oil and gas industry and the Oklahoma companies exhibiting at the show. We are also here to promote and encourage more trade and investment into the state from oil and gas companies around the world. Energy already plays an enormous role in Oklahoma’s economy. Over 300,000 jobs are supported by the oil and gas industry, which leads to over $14 billion in yearly income. As governor, I’m doing everything I can, both at home and abroad, to help the industry grow and flourish. Oklahoma has always been a leader in the field, and we intend to keep it that way.

2) What is presently happening in Oklahoma that could be of interest to the attendees of the show and/or Canadian energy companies? Oklahoma has always been extremely active in the energy field. Last year I unveiled the Oklahoma First Energy Plan, the state’s first comprehensive energy strategy. The plan focuses on fostering economic development, transitioning transportation fuels, optimizing energy systems and positioning Oklahoma for the future by leveraging our considerable natural resources. The plan also includes a coordinated effort between 13 different states to

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin work with automobile manufacturers on developing an affordable natural gas sedan for state fleets. The state of Oklahoma also has tremendous resources in oil and natural gas and some of the best companies in the world headquartered there. OneOK and Williams, headquartered out of Tulsa, and Devon and Chesapeake Energy, headquartered in Oklahoma City, are all Fortune 500 companies. Besides the tens of thousands of Oklahomans employed in these and other energy companies, the Mississippi Lime Play (in Northern Oklahoma and Southern Kansas) is projected to bring in as many as 100,000 new jobs to Oklahoma in the next five years. Additionally, Cushing, Oklahoma is regarded as the pipeline crossroads of the world. It serves as the price point for WTI Crude and is the largest oil storage facility in the world. Policy makers, industry people and average citizens all understand the importance of the energy industry to Oklahoma’s growth and prosperity. As a result, Oklahoma continues to enjoy the kind of regulatory and tax incentives that are friendly to the industry and help to support energy jobs. We’re an energy state; and we’re proud of it.

3) What do you and the delegation from Oklahoma hope to get out of the show? We’re here to tell the “Oklahoma Story.” Oklahoma’s oil and gas industry accounts for a third of the state’s economic output. We are the fourth largest producer of natural gas and fifth largest producer of crude oil in the U.S. Overall, Oklahoma produces more than 8% of US natural gas supplies. Across the U.S., Oklahoma companies are responsible for an even larger percentage. Oklahoma may not be the biggest state, but we are an energy powerhouse. We’re proud to take that message to Canada and share it with our friends in the oil and gas industries from across the world.

It’s Not Business as Usual in Canada’s Oilpatch Canada’s oil and gas industry has seen peaks and valleys over the years both in terms of production levels and, of course, commodity prices. While there is much to marvel at in terms of the progress and transformation of the industry over that same time period, the 2012 Canadian Drilling Activity Forecast provided by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada (PSAC) reveals that it’s not business as usual in Canada’s oilpatch. In typical Alberta fashion, weather has been unpredictable and unseasonable so far this year as we welcomed summer like weather in January and winter like weather late May. The balmy weather at the outset of the year impacted the ability to move heavy equipment in field, and it was an early break-up. All of this led PSAC to shave its mid-year forecast by 200 wells from the January update to 13,150 wells (rigs released), or a 2% increase over 2011 activity levels. In addition to unseasonable weather, sinking natural gas prices have had a significant impact on drilling activity. Low gas prices are accelerating the shift to oil, and PSAC’s mid-year forecast projects that close to 90% of all productive wells will be oil which amounts to a 10% increase over the previous year and a complete reversal from only a few year ago. PSAC’s 2012 forecast includes projected average meterage per well of close to 2000 meters, with more than 7 million meters having been drilled in the first quarter of the year. “Let’s put the total drilling depth in some perspective,” says Mark Salkeld, president and CEO of PSAC. “If you were to imagine the total meters drilled during Q1 as a single vertical well, which of course would be impossible, the total meterage drilled in Canada so far this year would have gone past of the middle of earth. Given the number of wells drilled so far are not even one half of the total that will be drilled this year according to our forecast, that means we will likely drill a total number of meters equivalent to drilling from one side of the globe through and well past the other side or enough meters to circle the globe three times. That is hard to wrap your head around.” The increasing depth of wells has become possible through advances in technology like directional and horizontal drilling which have exponentially decreased a well site footprint while increasing the below surface coverage of single wells. The deployment of new technologies are allowing for reach into new plays and re-opening legacy plays once thought to be uneconomical to develop and impossible to reach. Since 2007, the average depth of a well has increased more than 50% or more than 600 meters in length and horizontal wells now account for more than half of all wells being drilled.

“A lot of people out there just don’t understand how long and complex modern wells really are,” says Salkeld. “In just five years, the average length of a well has increased the equivalent of nearly six football fields with the total average length per well coming in close to the combined length of 20 football fields.” “Our forecast for 2012 is a mid-point return between the high-point in 2007 when close to 20,000 wells were drilled and the extreme lows of 2009 that came on the heels of the economic downturn,” explains Salkeld. “We are in a new operating reality where we aren’t going to return to the 20,000 plus counts of just a few years ago because of the longer and more complex wells we are drilling. Going forward, activity levels are going to be less about the total number of wells we drill, and more about other key indicators like the average rig operating days per well.” Although technology is opening up capacity, activity levels continue to hover due to the ongoing labour shortage impacting the entire industry. “While technology is unleashing huge capacity to optimize drilling performance and the productivity of wells, the labour shortage restricts that capacity at the same time,” says Salkeld. “PSAC is making great strides in working with all levels of government to find immediate and long-term solutions that will ease access to domestic and foreign labour markets.” In addition to working on policy and regulatory remedies that will ease recruitment, PSAC has also commissioned a study to identify key regions across Canada where there are workers who have the key competencies and transferable skills most in need by PSAC members. “Our members are keen to recruit from targeted Canadian labour markets, but domestic labour pools presently are too shallow to meet the current and long-term demand of this industry,” explains Salkeld. “We need easier access to foreign labour markets as well to help ease the labour shortage and we will continue to work with governments and our customers to find ways to alleviate the situation.” The Petroleum Services Association of Canada is the national trade association representing the service, supply and manufacturing sectors within the upstream petroleum industry. PSAC represents a diverse range of over 250 member companies, employing more than 60,000 people and contracting almost exclusively to oil and gas exploration and production companies. PSAC member companies represent over 80 per cent of the business volume generated in the petroleum services industry. For more information, please visit www.psac.ca.

Canada’s Oil and Gas Industry Will Need to Fill At Least 9,500 Jobs by 2015 Canada’s oil and gas industry will need to fill a minimum of 9,500 jobs by 2015, according to a report released today by the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada. Highlights from the report, Canada’s Oil and Gas Labour Market Outlook to 2015, state that between now and 2015, Canada’s oil and gas industry is at risk of losing about three per cent of its workforce overall, because of persistently low natural gas prices. However, two primary factors – growth in certain operations and age-related attrition across the industry – will offset most job losses and in fact contribute to increased overall hiring needs. Changes in the number of jobs will not be equal across all industry sectors. For example, the oil and gas services sector, although impacted by commodity price volatility, will still need to fill about 5,400 jobs between 2012 and 2015. The exploration and production (E&P) sector, hardest hit by prolonged low natural gas prices, may see some workforce contraction but will also experience skill and experience gaps as it loses workers due to retirements and turnover, especially for industry-specific roles.

By 2015, employment in the oil sands sector is projected to increase by 29 per cent over 2011 levels, or approximately 5,850 jobs. The pipeline sector will add about 530 jobs over the same period. Both sectors will also need to do significant hiring to replace retiring workers and for turnover. “This is a complex labour story,” commented Cheryl Knight, Executive Director and CEO of the Petroleum HR Council. “Hiring will increase, but total number of jobs will remain relatively flat. Certain sectors and operations will add jobs, while others will lose some positions. And employee turnover is the wild card that could have recruiters working to fill hundreds of additional job openings over the next four years.” Knight continued: “At a more granular level, we’re seeing high demand for – and reduced supply of – skilled workers in specific occupations, many of which are unique to the oil and gas industry. Retirements are the greatest cause of this growing – and alarming – skill and experience gap. The technical capabilities and knowledge of retiring, experienced workers are just not easily replaced by new entrants.”

The Lowdown on Canadian Gas Futures The influx of natural gas into the energy mix, along with disappointing pricing, warmer conditions, and high reserves means production and profits have been benched in many locations in North America. “Record lows last year means production has fallen and some gas plants have shut in, or opted to move to NGLs” reported Samantha Santa Maria, Platts Managing Editor, Natural Gas, during the Platts Oil Forum in Calgary recently. “Rigs have fallen off precipitously and it doesn’t pay to dig for dry gas.” Lack of demand for gas means storage is rising with East and West reserves sitting between 67 to 81 per cent full respectively. According to Santa Maria, who notes these amounts usually occur later in the year, says the reality check is that gas will remain low, averaging between $2.75 and $3.61 US until 2015. To compensate, some rigs have slowed or shut down throughput, or converted to crude transport. Despite crude to gas ratios are through the roof; 35.1, she predicts there may be some upcoming activity that will bring some relief to sagging activity in the gas sector. “The greatest increase will come from oil sands driven in the West and power generation in Ontario,” she says.” Construction of a world-class ethylene plant on the Gulf coast and growing foreign requirements, and demands especially coming from Asia, specifically, by Japan and Korea, which purchase over 30% of available gas and NGLs, exacerbated by Fukushima’s nuclear is still being offline, will drive up demand. She said the disaster has also spooked plans for nuclear development in Europe, which could potentially drive up the price and usage of gas universally when the weather turns cold. Santa Maria cited just over 40 per cent of investments in North America were placed in Canada—a good sign for things to come. She added that many Asian partners in LNG projects want more control of the upstream, and a stake in the LNG terminals, which gives more security in the long run. Santa Maria added raising rates to compensate hasn’t worked out well and is an ongoing issue for throughput. Lower tolls and zone changes to put supplies down the pipe has forced some companies like Kinder Morgan’s pony express to switch from natural gas back to crude. “Competition is picking up in the West, including the Ruby pipeline, which went online in 2011 moving Rockies gas to the Pacific Northwest,” she says. “Since Rockies can swing West and East it has become a swing supplier which is increasing its options. Ruby wants to take a big bite out of the Canadian share in the West.” While Canada’s outlook is positive, it is not alone in exporting NGLs. There are 13 possible sites in North America which will start production as early as 2013. Globally, Santa Maria says the scene gets even more complex with competitive Australia, which has 24 existing and proposed terminals that could produce some profitable returns. China is also aggressively expecting activity from shale deposits by 2015 depending on the speed of their infrastructure.

SPE Heavy Oil Conference The inaugural Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Heavy Oil Conference- Canada will provide attendees with an international perspective on best practices and technological advances in the exploration and production of heavy oil, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced in the process. The annual Conference was developed in response to SPE members’ interest in a focused heavy oil technical conference in Canada. It gives SPE members the opportunity to participate in the annual conference, and simultaneously attend the Global Petroleum Show and the Gas & Oil Expo, two of the largest exhibition events presented in Canada for the energy industry. “SPE saw a need in the Canadian region to bring a conference to its members that focuses on the exploration and production of heavy oil,” conference chairperson K.C. Yeung said. “We feel this conference satisfies that need and the technical program we have developed showcases the advances in heavy oil and oil sands technology, while providing a forum to share best practices, and lessons learned while networking with colleagues.” The technical program will cover topics such as drilling and completion, thermal and non-thermal recovery processes, production and facilities, fluid characterization, reservoir evaluation, and environmental management of oil sands. Glen Schmidt of Laricina Energy Ltd., will also host a keynote session Innovation to Enhance the Value of In-situ Oil Sands Recovery. Oil Sands Operators Address Environmental Regulation Challenges According to Directive 74, Canada’s oil sands producers must make a 90 percent reduction in the fine clay particles suspended in tailing ponds by 2014. Achieving this goal safely, economically and in an environmentally acceptable way will be a considerable challenge. Oil sands production creates huge tailing ponds in which the remaining water and solid material is contained to prevent it from draining into the local watercourses. The middle layer of the pond, known as “mature fine tailings”, consists of 70 percent water and 30 percent fine clay, and it can take decades for the solids to settle out. Only after separation can the liquids be treated to remove any residual hydrocarbons. In the meantime, the ponds are considered eyesores and hazardous to wildlife. Several solutions have been proposed for dealing with the tailing ponds, from installing high-capacity centrifuges to speed up the formation of the solids, to applying other waste treatment techniques such as polymer additions, carbon dioxide injections and flocculat-

ing agents. However, operators want to test the suitability of these approaches before committing the significant necessary investment in permanent facilities. The time available to test the different approaches is limited to the warmer months, from late May to October. Additional constraints occur during the annual ‘break-up’, when highway or site transportation is severely restricted. In addition many oil sands production sites do not have utility power available near the testing locations, and the lead time to bring utilities in is not an option due to tight deadlines.

Power when it’s needed Rental power specialists such as Aggreko have the expertise to both resolve the power issue quickly and to contribute to the front-end engineering and design (FEED), ensuring projects are properly sized and robust. By taking care of preparatory design work during the winter, and prestaging equipment before the spring break-up, a rental power specialist can offer customers the maximum time in which to deploy and test pro-

posed tailing pond solutions. The customer can then assess the proposal for performance, reliability, and economy - including both front-end costs and operating expenses. The reliable electric power that is critical to such operations can be supplied in a number of ways. Natural gas generators can be used if field gas is available. They are clean-burning, economical and eliminate the risk of fuel-spill. Diesel fuel is the best choice if neither natural gas nor electrical grid power is available. Customized power designs reduce the carbon footprint and exactly match the expected load, which increases fuel efficiency and ensures the power meets peak demand. The use of rental electrical power is most advantageous because temporary installations are so flexible. It can be used to supply almost all requirements, and one needs only to ensure that sufficient total power is available to handle peak loading. In addition to its ability to supply a wide range of equipment types, electrical power can operate production control and safety instrumentation, enabling a minimum number of personnel to monitor and control the entire system. The only caveat is that for safety reasons neutral ground resistors are required by the Canadian Mine Act, but this is easily designed into the system. Temporary electrical systems for waste processing should have redundancy for guaranteed back-up in the event of equipment failure. In addition, warm summer days can require electrically-powered cooling equipment to keep instrumentation within its recommended operating parameters. An experienced rental power company will make provision for both these necessities.

Getting it right—the first time By facilitating the deployment and testing of various tailingpond mitigation initiatives, rental power specialists can supply the critical needs of clients by using a methodology that is safe, economical and reliable. The most practical way to achieve this is by setting up temporary test sites to validate the various techniques under the most realistic conditions possible. Using designs developed by experienced Canadian engineers, the harsh environment can be addressed at the same time an effective solution to waste management issues is developed and tested. Both the intent and the spirit of Directive 74 can be addressed efficiently and economically while production of vital energy resources is sustained. Most importantly, the testing process fosters environmental stewardship by helping to ensure the best solution is chosen before permanent facilities are constructed. SUREstackTM System by Sanjel Leading the way in multizone isolation facturing innovation is Sanjel’s new completions technology using a proven, single trip, fully retrievable ball and seat system. Utlizing coiled tubing or jointed pipe, Sanjel’s completions product offering using Suretech Completion’s patent pending SUREstack™ system provides operators with an effective alternative to conventional milling or drilling processes, while saving up to 40 percent on post-fracturing completion time. The sleeve liner system offers an unobstructed flow from toe to heel. The system can handle anywhere from 17 stages in 8.89 centimeters (3.5 inches), 30 stages in 11.43 centimeters (4.5 inches), and 40 stages in 13.97 centimeters (5.5 inches) (diameter). Features include liner top technology allowing full rotation of liner during installation; option for swellable packer isolation; specially coated sleeves for long-term reliability; shiftable sleeves for zonal isolation/water shut-off; up to 103 MPa (15,000 psi) bursting rating; and minimal fluid loss to formation during post stimulation clean-up. Sean Campbell, Vice President and Founder of Suretech Completions, says that since the inauguration of the system into the field in 2010, client feedback has been more than positive. “They are impressed with the time and cost savings of retrieving compared to milling or drilling out balls and seats,” states Campbell. “They are especially excited about minimal fluid loss and wellbore damage typically experienced during post stimulation clean-up and through the drilling process.”

Long term reliability in an often unpredictable environment is key to value in any equipment investment. When it comes to maximum output, Campbell says SUREstack™ has been successfully implemented in sites all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and North Dakota USA in a variety of formations and depths. The beauty of the system is that it allows teams to locate valves more easily and quickly, as well as selectively open and close valves resulting in a better return in field economics and performance. A reliable pressure test confirms a successful zonal isolation. A single trip is all it takes for immediate production and unobstructed flow. “The liner is designed to allow long term access to the well bore after the fracturing process,” he says. “This gives the customer the ability to close or open valves for water shut off, re-fracturing or isolation testing. It also allows the use of conventional tools due to the liner being full drift inner diameter after the retrieval process.” For more information about the SUREstack™ system by Sanjel, please visit booth number 1068 or www.sanjel.com.

The multiple award winning Kudu is an ISO certified oilfield equipment manufacturer widely recognized for its PCPs, and related products and services. With a global workforce, Kudu has emerged as on of the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of PCPs. Significantly, Kudu has found a niche as a specialized pump manufacturer in a field where its major competitors typically are subsidiaries of much larger multinational conglomerates. All these successes have led to a feature story in the new best selling book by KPMG titled “That’ll Never Work: Business Lessons from Successful Entrepreneurs”. Kudu has offices and fields stores located in Canada, Russia, Romania, Kazakhstan, Oman, USA and Australia. Their proximity to oilfield activity enables Kudu to have the knowledge, adaptability and responsiveness tailored to each operation’s needs. Kudu’s PCP specialists are considered the best in the industry and offer solutions that fit traditional applications along with customized designs for a variety of tough wells. Powered by:

Production optimization is a hot topic but finding the right unit can be daunting. Kudu was the first to market with Progressing Cavity Pump well optimization. The PCP Well Manager optimizes production by adjusting pump speed, monitoring torque and measuring flow rates. Controlling PCP’s with the Well Manager reduces premature pump failures due to pump off and decreases the field monitoring of fluid levels. “The Well Manager allows us to safely produce the well at it maximum potential, without worrying about pumping the well off and damaging the pump,” Ray Mills, CEO KUDU, says. “The ultimate benefit is that we see payout in as little as weeks in terms of additional production.” The PCP Well Manager also enables the user to make changes remotely, anytime, anywhere.

Kudu’s innovative product line also dives into rotor improvements and thermal applications. Tough Coat™ - a revolutionary spray metal coating applied to PCP rotors, significantly improves corrosion resistance compared to a typical chrome rotor. It provides a longer rotor life, increased production efficiency and lower operating costs. Due to extreme viscosity, extracting heavy oils at reservoir temperature is difficult to impossible. Thermal processes such as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) make it possible to produce highly viscous crudes by heating up the oil for extraction. The artificial lift used to pump the oil is critical to the overall functioning and efficiency of the well. The standard elastomer technology has an operating temperature limit around 160°C, far below thermal production requirements. KUDU’s high temperature package features a metal to metal pump that pushes the temperature limit to 350°C. Many of Kudu’s new products are started at the field level. Working in conjunction with customers Kudu has been a leader in brining new products to market including Top Tag™ - the first engineered PCP Top Tag allowing the user to locate the rotor inside the stator without using a tag bar and the Left Helix - a reverse geometry pump that defends against sand buildup, eliminates pump inlet blocking and prevents bridging. The Kudu accolades are extensive starting with the Innovation Insights Award for Manufacturing Practices from the National Research Council of Canada. Kudu was also recognized as one of Canada’s Top 50 Best Managed Private Companies, Calgary Manufacturing Industry’s 2008 Best Employer for medium sized manufacturers and the Alberta Export Award for Oil & Gas Manufacturer 2009. Kudu also recently received the Alberta Exporter of the Year and Best Oil & Gas Manufacturer 2011. Polycore Thermoplastic Lined Tubing “Give Us Your Worst Well!” Polycore Tubular Linings provides thermoplastic liners that have been proven in down-hole applications in over 18,000 wells during the past 15 years. Operators experience drastic reductions in operating cost by eliminating rod on-tubing wear and corrosion failures. Savings can also be found with: less work-overs, prolonged tubing life, minimized lost production, reduced energy required for lifting in pumped wells, and reduced need for corrosion inhibitors. Thermoplastic liners are extremely abrasion resistant and chemically inert, eliminating concerns associated with wireline damage, coil tubing mechanical damage, acid treatments, and chemical treatments. Polycore’s patented products have been particularly effective in eliminating rod on tubing wear in beam pumped wells, progressive cavity pumped wells, and any well associated with deviations. Thermoplastic liners are also effective with other artificial lift methods such as plunger lift wells, submersible pumped wells, and gas lift wells. Use of this technology eliminates the need for tubing/rod rotators as well as rod guides and/or special rod boxes. Thermoplastic liners have also been proven effective in reducing corrosion failures in injection wells, disposal wells, and flow lines. This mechanically bonded liner solution allows you to recognize additional savings by promoting the use of used inspected tubing including: yellowband, blueband, and greenband. The Polycore liner installation process also allows reusing tubing already internally coated with plastic or epoxy, without incurring the cost of having the old internal coating removed. Thermoplastic liners can also be installed in used tubing which may previously have been scrapped due to pin thread mechanical damage or corrosion damage caused by chipped coatings. With sufficient upset remaining, the threads can be repaired and a thermoplastic liner installed. Polycore’s unique and innovative end finishing process, in combination with a coupling internally coated in the J-area, ensures zero corrosion through the entire string of tubing while maximizing the ease of running tubing in the field. No corrosion barrier donuts/inserts, special torque make-up requirements, or service technicians are required. Polycore lined tubing is run using a torque to optimum API specifications.
