John Wagstaff MNAEA, MARLA | Director

Welcome to the latest edition of the GREEN, your community magazine.

We’ve got lots of local goings-on, advice, and articles for you throughout this issue and, of course, a smattering of our latest properties for you to peruse, too. Hopefully you enjoy flicking through it and find something of interest. I’m sure you will.

Although we left IG9 in a physical sense, Petty’s are still very much a big part of Buckhurst Hill and beyond. We continue to support local charities, associations, and schools and our new way of working will undoubtedly benefit our customers in and around the area as well.

A lot has happened since our last issue, so it’s hard to know where to start. Many of you will be aware of our decision to consolidate our business by merging our two offices into one last year, but, for those who don’t, I’d like to start off by assuring everyone in West Essex that it’s business as usual at Petty’s.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2019 holds for the company in the parish, and I hope you’ll be part of our ongoing story, too.

We looked long and hard at how the industry has changed and we’re aware of its constant evolution. Despite being regarded as a ‘traditional’ estate agent, we’ve always got an eye on the future, and our research led us to believe that a central hub would allow us to better serve those who are most important to us, our customers. People like you. Operating in one area brings additional fluidity and dynamism to an already well-oiled machine. Having everyone together over the last five months has been nothing short of amazing, vindicating our decision fully in a short period of time. Our hope was to take the business to a new level with the move, and I’m happy to report that we’re firmly on course - and this is in spite of the testing market conditions every agent has experienced over the last 12 months! The team love the atmosphere and closeness the move has brought, too, so I’m absolutely thrilled with how things are progressing.

Tech tweaks and online overhauls As well as the consolidation, we’ve also changed the way we operate from a tech point of view, too. Keeping on top of the latest wizardry can induce shiny object syndrome, but we’re quick to dismiss anything that doesn’t offer value to our customers. Regardless of whether you’re a landlord or tenant, buyer or seller, our new behind-the-scenes systems will benefit you greatly. We’ve also made a few changes front of house as well. The introduction of digital screens will help show off the properties we have on our books to their fullest potential and the latest iteration of our website, pettyson.co.uk, is now widely regarded as one of the best sources of property information anywhere on the Web, which is something I’m hugely proud of.

Hurst House, Woodford Green LD

SO

£3,250,000 Freehold Hurst House, an exceptional Queen Anne residence built in 1714, described as “The Best House In Woodford” by Pevsner in his architectural series “The Buildings Of England”, stands back from the road fronted by a circular driveway called “The Sweep” near the famous statue of Sir Winston Churchill. Totalling 6,755 square feet. A Grade II* listed small stately mansion, commissioned by Wapping brewer Henry Raine as his country house, contains excellent examples of period chimney pieces, wall plaques, cornicing, painted ceilings and exquisite mouldings with carved wood panelling depicting hops and barley giving a nod to his profession. Of particular note is the breath taking high arched window enjoying spectacular garden views from the half landing. The Naked Beauty is in a style known as English Baroque which was developed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor who was known by the original owner of the house. The stunning rear gardens of some 300’ laid out by Percy Cane in 1953 boast a wonderful array of herbaceous plants and trees with a classical pavilion as the focal point. Hurst House lies on the periphery of Woodford Green within a conservation area on the edge of Epping Forest. It is situated to the North East of London just over eight miles from the City. For the commuter the Central Line Underground is just over a mile away and a good range of well-regarded schools are close by. The North Circular Road, M11 and M25 are a short drive away.

park, a local charity in Loughton, was started in 2009 in response to the needs of young people identified from a local youth club. It soon became part of the national charity, Worth Unlimited, based in Walthamstow and began working with local secondary schools to provide alternative education to year 10 and 11s. The service gradually expanded as particular needs arose and we focused more on the topics young people felt would be beneficial to them.

the local community to work with young people on a one to one basis for as long as is needed. Mentoring can improve self-esteem, help build resilience, boost confidence in a young person and be hugely rewarding for the mentor. We have our own team of fully qualified in-house counsellors who are experienced with working with young people. A more intensive form of support than mentoring, counselling can help a young person develop strategies to help themselves and can dramatically improve mental well-being. We aim to make counselling service affordable for everyone.

From September 2018 Spark made the decision to focus on providing counselling and mentoring services to young people in the Epping Forest and surrounding areas. This was in response to the increasing need for this type of support.

We are responsible for raising our own funds and this is done through a combination of contracted work with local schools, donations from individual supporters, local churches and businesses, short term grants and our own fundraising events. We are incredibly grateful to Essex County Council for allowing us the use of the Loughton Youth Centre and the commissioning of projects. Our services are increasingly being relied upon by young people and their families and in 2018/19, Spark will need approximately £70,000 to cover all costs to operate for one year. This includes the delivery of over 700 counselling sessions at a subsidized rate making it affordable for all who need it. Our biggest challenge is the funding of long term planning and development and there are various ways that you can help us achieve these:

As many of you will be aware, there is a mental health crisis among young people in the UK.

10% of children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem.

50% of all long term mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24.

70%

of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age (Children’s Society 2008). Mental health problems often start in childhood but opportunities to help are missed and there is a lack of national funding to alleviate the problems. At Spark we passionately believe that early intervention is essential in order to prevent longer term mental health issues in adulthood and we do this through the provision of mentoring and counselling. Mentoring is an informal way of supporting a young person to deal with any challenges they may be facing. We recruit and train volunteer mentors from

We also provide an after school drop in club on Mondays at Loughton Youth Centre from 3.30pm. It is a friendly and welcoming space for young people to relax and be themselves!

• Business sponsorship of counselling sessions or Spark’s core costs • Organise a fundraising event • Take on a personal challenge and raise sponsorship • Volunteer as a mentor with Spark • Become a ‘Friend of Spark’ and give a regular financial contribution • Become a member of our volunteer fundraising team • ‘Like’ us on Facebook and share Spark news with your friends and family @sparkworthunlimited Let us know if you think that you are able to help us in other ways that we may not have thought of!

available. Obviously, you can sit and enjoy a full English breakfast here, too, and the winter months see warming dishes such as sausage and mash and soups added to the menu. Oh, and don’t forget the bountiful cups of tea!

While the cemetery, one of the largest in Europe, has been in Manor Park since 1856, The Poppy Pantry is relatively recent addition to its grounds. Opened by Wanstead local, Paul Charters, a former black cab driver who’d had enough of the London traffic, back in December 2016, this charming little cafe has become a regular refreshment stop-off for visitors paying their respects to loved ones who have passed.

The Poppy Pantry is much more than just a cafe, though. Paul and his thoughtful, caring team also offer a wake catering service to those who wish to take advantage of it. Thanks to the amount of space they have at their disposal, The Poppy Pantry can accommodate smaller wakes in the cafe itself after hours, while larger congregations are able to utilise the nearby Ernie Turner Hall for their gathering and enjoy the food provided by the cafe’s professional chef.

It’s growing popularity isn’t a surprise, as the food and service provided is exemplary, while the views across the stunning grounds are second to none. There’s plenty of room, too, with 80 seats in total (30 inside, 50 outside), so seating is rarely an issue, although busy periods such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas can keep the staff on their toes.

Regardless of whether you are organising a wake or simply visiting the cemetery to pay respects to someone dear to your heart, The Poppy Pantry’s idyllic setting is stunning. Couple that with the kind and courteous staff and tasty titbits on offer and you have the perfect recipe for remembrance.

As one would expect, The Poppy Pantry offers its visitors standard cafe fare, with everything from rolls and baguettes through to jacket potatoes and pastries

If you’re interested in any of The Poppy Pantry’s wake services you can get in touch via phone on 07931 788 027 or email at info@thepoppypantry.co.uk. You can also check out their website, www.thepoppypantry.co.uk

Colour trends for 2019 If you’re thinking about decorating your home in 2019, it’s time to start thinking about colour trends. Whether you’re focusing on one room or the entire house, it’s helpful to know which colours are popular with others. There are a number of colour trends expected for 2019, many of which haven’t been seen in recent years.

TOP COLOUR TRENDS FOR 2019 Hazelnut - Gone are the days of cream and beige, in 2019 it’s all about hazelnut. Hazelnut’s popularity comes from the fact that it’s subtle and understated, meaning that it’ll always be in style. The colour doesn’t clash with anything and it can brighten up dark spaces. Though it’s a safe bet, it’s a safe bet that will look great. Dark Greens - Green has been a popular colour palette for many years now, but in 2019 it’s all about dark greens. These shades are rich, deep and enticing. It doesn’t matter which

specific dark green shade that you choose, it’s sure to bring a sense of nature and intrigue to any room. Dark green is best used on focal walls, as too much can cause unnecessary darkness in certain areas. Muted Pastels - When we think of pastels, most people think of baby pinks and baby blues shades. However, in 2019 it’s all about muted pastels. They are soothing colours that create a feeling of tranquility and calm. Muted pastels are most commonly used in bathrooms, kitchens and nurseries. Plus, they are ideal if you are someone who prefers a

minimalist approach to decorating. Mustard - Though mustard may not be the first choice for many it has become a surprisingly popular colour. It’s a great way to add a pop of colour to any room, without being as brash as gold. Mustard is ideal if you are looking to create a rich and smart vibe, especially if you use it on a statement wall. As you can see, the colour trends for 2019 are varied. As well as there being muted and subtle colours, there are also dark and noticeable colours. This means that there’s a colour trend for every style and every room n

Richmond Way, Wanstead

£865,000 Freehold Set on the tree lined Richmond Way, this substantial home offers beautifully maintained period features alongside contemporary living and layout. Stepping inside the ornate hallway you will discover a large lounge, dining room and an airy kitchen, which enjoys views over the garden. The spacious lounge provides a beautiful place to relax in thanks to the tasteful decor and the room’s focal points, such as the feature fireplace, large bay window and characterful detailing of the cornicing and skirting boards. The dining room is equally as impressive with double aspect views over the garden and a kitchen, which has plenty of storage and work surface space. With these two rooms connecting seamlessly, it creates a fantastic entertaining space. Although these three rooms create a large, ‘open plan’ sense of living, there is also the addition of a separate reception room that features the stunning turret and bay window overlooking Wanstead flats. There is also a large handy cellar, which is accessible from the hallway. To the first floor there is a modern family bathroom and four bedrooms, with the stunning master bedroom enjoying a large bay window and a great deal of space. Externally, the advantage of the corner position allows the rear garden to wrap around the house and has been thoughtfully designed to create three distinct areas: a large raised decked area and a spacious artificial grassed area, which is perfect for the children to play on. The icing on the cake with this home is the large double garage at the rear of the garden. EPC: D58 / C79

A word from... Wanstead’s councillors

I

t’s been a busy few months since we were elected councillors for Wanstead Village ward in May 2018. We were thrilled to be elected and are proud to serve this fantastic community. Our focus is now on delivering on the priorities we set out during the election to make Wanstead safer, cleaner, and greener. On crime, we meet regularly with the local neighbourhood watch and safer neighbourhoods team to identify any issues and areas where the council can help, for example to install CCTV where needed. Crime rates are relatively low in Wanstead, but we still suffer from burglaries and thefts. We encourage all local residents to heed the crime prevention advice from the police and play an active role in their neighbourhood watch groups. We are also continuing to campaign for the government to stop the severe cuts to the policing budget. On concerns about litter and street cleaning, the council is investing more in this area and we’re in regular contact with council officers

Cllr Paul Donovan

paul.donovan@redbridge.gov.uk

to identify and clean up any problem areas. We would also encourage residents to us the ‘Report It’ function on the council’s website. We also participate in monthly litter picks which usually take place on the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Committees perform a vital role in scrutinising the work of the Council and between the three Wanstead Village Councillors, we’ve covered most of the main committees which gives us a good overview of the council’s work.

We are working on an environmental charter that sets out a range of environmental priorities that residents, the businesses and community groups, as well as the council can do to improve our local environment. This includes measures to tackle air pollution, improve biodiversity and reduce waste. We are hoping to see a roll out of 20 mph speed limits in our ward, as well as improve facilities for cycling and walking.

We hold regular advice services on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month at 10am - 12pm at the Vestry at Christ Church Wanstead. Residents are welcome to come along to meet with us and raise any concerns. And we go door knocking at least once a month to better understand the issues facing residents who may not have time to visit our advice service.

Casework compromises the most significant amount of our time as councillors. Though generally people seem pleased with the services they receive, recurrent concerns include – keeping our communal spaces clean and tidy and concerns about crime and increasingly air pollution and speeding cars through residential areas.

Cllr Jo Blackman

jo.blackman@redbridge.gov.uk

Wanstead Village is a truly special place and a model for many other communities. We want to work with the local community to ensure it continues to thrive. We are keen to support local community events and initiatives so please get in touch by emailing us and tell us how we can help. We look forward to hearing from you.

Dover Road, Aldersbrook

OIEO ÂŁ850,000 Freehold The Aldersbrook area has long been a favourite for buyers as all the homes are within a short walk of excellent schools and beautiful open parklands. The promise of Cross Rail from Manor Park Station (1 mile) has only helped to increase the popularity of the Aldersbrook area, making commuting into central London quicker and easier than ever before (currently 15 mins to Liverpool Street and 6 mins to Stratford). From the outside the decorative, mosaic pathway leads you towards the beautifully refurbished stained glass door with ornately framed porch way and surrounding sash windows. The period features continue inside, with the striking chequered tiled floor in the hallway leading you through into the beautiful lounge and dining room, both of which enjoy wooden floors, original fireplaces, deep cornicing and large double-glazed sash windows. den’s Trust have effectively been supporting grieving parents and families for the past few years. It became apparent to Elli Galvani, the founder of Eden’s Trust, that parents and siblings suffering the loss of a child would often be placed into a system of waiting lists for counselling that struggled to meet their specific needs. She recognised the need for specialised counselling which was both completely accessible and could be provided immediately for urgent support. From this, Elli founded Eden’s Trust, a charity to provide free, accessible support to both parents and siblings that are grieving the loss of a child. Eden’s trust works with both parents and siblings. They offer 1:1, couples and family counselling with their own specialised counsellors. They also provide parent group sessions, Sibling group sessions and a six-week programme for parents in a group environment. It isn’t just a place for counselling sessions, but tackles loneliness and isolation in their clients and community and has naturally become the safe space in which both grieving parents and siblings form a family, providing unlimited and ongoing support for each other through understanding and a shared strength. Over the past year, the trust community has expanded, with their family of supporters growing in the form of event attendees, fund raisers and those following and aiding the charity. They have developed the number of G.P’s, schools and other organisations that can reach out to refer new clients. Furthermore, the trust was generously awarded with the Toyota funding grant to support their work. Overall, these expansions have enabled Eden’s trust to facilitate the support of an increasing number of families and, most importantly, this has ensured that it can remain free and accessible to anyone.

W: edenstrust.org.uk

2018 also brought some wonderful memories in the shape of fundraising events. In February, they held their annual Zumbathon led by the founder of the trust and Zumba instructor, Elli. The event brought people together for two hours of dance, laughter and energy and those who attended helped raise the fantastic sum of £1,643 in the form of donations, sponsorship, raffle sales and sharing some welldeserved cake treats. Presented by Storm in a Teacup and sponsored by Petty son and Prestwich, the trust’s October barn dance came complete with a live band, dance caller, raffle and many guests ready to tap their toes! As well as turning out to be a lovely event with a great atmosphere, the barn dance successfully raised £1,646.63. The event was such a success that there are strong rumours of an annual music and dance event for the future… As Eden’s Trust moves into 2019 with its growing community and passion, they are excited to see how the New Year will unfold. They expect to expand their connections and drive the charity to continue to develop and support families. Their last event, the Zumbathon held on Saturday 30th March, was a huge success where dancing, fun and cake was enjoyed by all. There was also a fantastic prize of a weekend away for two, won by the participant who raised the biggest sponsorship for their Zumbathon challenge! Be sure to keep an eye out for similar events in the future. Petty Son and Prestwich have been an ongoing support and sponsor for Eden’s Trust and if you would also like to become part of the community and keep up to date with future events you can contact the trust with the details at the top of this page.

Ongoing support.

I would recommend them 100%.

Went the extra mile.

Petty Son & Prestwich made our property selling experience so straightforward, we switched to them after feeling disappointed with another agency and they really went the extra mile to sell our property. Everything was laid out in the beginning with no hidden extras and the feeling that they had the clients best interests at heart really came through. Not only were they helpful during the sale but they were really personable, we dealt with everyone at some stage in the Wanstead office and all were warm and friendly. Everyone was very prompt at replying to emails and call backs and regularly checked in with us. I couldn’t recommend them enough! Nicole (Seller)

Seamless process.

Communication open throughout.

Trust with a capital T.

Giving agents a good name.

Honestly the most professional and nicest agents I’ve dealt with. They went out of their way to help even long after the sale was complete. Having had bad experiences with other agents in the area Petty Son and Prestwich restored my faith. I would without question recommend. Matthew N (Buyer)

Professional.

THANK YOU.

Incredibly professional.

They changed our view of estate agents.

On behalf of the Wanstead Society, I would like to thank you for your amazing generosity in the last few years for not only sponsoring our calendar but also distributing copies to clients which has, undoubtedly, raised our profile with new arrivals in Wanstead. Apart from subscriptions, the calendar is our only source of funding and the money raised through sales is used by us in turn to support and sponsor things such as tree planting on the Green, a table and bench in the children’s play area and the Wanstead Community Garden project. What goes around, comes around, so thank you again! The committee join me in sending their very best wishes to all at PS&P for the year ahead. Wanstead Society

Experienced, talented and friendly staff.

Helped raise our profile.

Could not speak highly enough of them.

Fantastic service.

Pleasure to talk to.

Amazing generosity. Incredibly generous sponsorship.

On behalf of Nightingale Primary School PTA, I am writing to express our thanks and gratitude for your incredibly generous sponsorship of our school fete this year. We raised almost ÂŁ4800 in total and could not have done it without your support. Nightingale Primary Scholl PTA

There’s always little gems that can be discovered and we try to highlight these wherever possible. For me, Piccolo falls into the latter of these categories and since moving to Wanstead 7 years ago and having my first meal there it has never ceased to be a firm favourite of mine. A truly outstanding example of an Italian restaurant, Piccolo run by husband and wife team Julio and Marta, serves authentic Italian cuisine with the punchy flavour and home style cooking you’d expect from a small, well-run family establishment. Made with locally sourced fresh ingredients, almost everything is prepared on the premises to ensure the flavour and quality is never compromised. No matter how busy the restaurant gets you can always count on friendly and attentive staff serving delicious food in a home-from-home style atmosphere. Having been a regular of the restaurant for many years I wanted to find out more about the people behind one of my favourite Wanstead eateries so that I can share their story with you. Marta, who you can often see keeping things running smoothly at front of house, tells us about the wonder that is Piccolo. Tell us about yourselves My husband, Julio, was born and grew up in a remote village in Ecuador South America. He left home very early, travelling a lot before settling in North America where he trained in a prestige Italian school in New York and finished his degree in Italian and French cuisine.

When he eventually moved and settled in the UK he worked for many years for Sheraton Hotel as a head chef before working for over 30 years in “Adriatico” and “Bel Sit” in Woodford Green. Thanks to his vast experience he is a true master of his craft, creating delicious sauces to complement his pasta, meat and fish dishes and he is very passionate about cooking and creating new dishes. As for me, I am from a slightly colder climate! I was born and lived in north Poland but I met my husband when he was head chef at Adriatico. I am a biomedical scientist by profession and work for Barts Health full time whilst working at Piccolo in the evenings. It is incredibly challenging but so rewarding when I see happy customers coming back to us. I feel that all the hours we put in makes a different to the people who live in Wanstead and the surrounding areas. We live in Woodford Green and have an 18 month old daughter, so finding time for her and each other can be hard but we don’t regret it. Nothing worth doing in life is ever easy and we think opening our own business is the best thing we have ever done - all the positive comments which we get from our lovely customers makes it worthwhile! Tell us about Piccolo We opened Piccolo on the 19th November 2013 and we have been running it for over five years. We wanted to have a short name which summed us and our business up and Piccolo means ‘small’ in Italian. Our restaurant and our team of around ten staff is small so the name was perfect ...... and my husband is quite short so it describes us as well! Our roles are clearly defined; I am responsible for front of house and my husband does what he does best and cooks the food. We don’t cross over into each other’s area which is why we function well as a business and as a

couple! As for settling on Wanstead for our business it was no coincidence. I had known Wanstead for some time as my best friend has spent most of her life living there and I had always loved the community spirit and village feel it had. We wanted a business where we could feel part of the local community and Wanstead felt like the perfect place to do this. Since opening our doors locals have accepted us with open arms and we often see our customers returning with family and friends so we know they have enjoyed their meals with us. How do you find time for yourselves with such a busy business? We always shut the restaurant for two weeks during the summer holiday so we can spend some quality time with our families and friends and we close during all public holidays. We love our customers as it’s thanks to them we are where we are, but we know they understand that it’s important to have a healthy work/life balance and part of this is taking time off for ourselves. Running a successful business it is not all about money, it’s about the well-being of the staff who in turn look after the customers and that is why we are shut Mondays and half days Tuesday. What is the future of Piccolo? We want to concentrate on doing what we do best and continue to keep the restaurant small and family orientated. With my husband’s years of experience he has created the menu to be authentic and to deliver good quality, popular dishes to a high standard time and time again. We hope we continue to be a popular destination for residents but also see new faces who enjoy our dishes enough to return again! Interview by Fay Parsons-Hann

The Wanstead Park lakes: A glass half full?

T

here are four lakes at Wanstead Park, owned by the City of London Corporation. These lakes, along with one owned by Wanstead Golf Club, comprise a cascade that forms the signature feature of one of England’s most significant Georgian gardens. Low water levels at two of the lakes, the Heronry Pond and Ornamental Water, have aroused considerable public concern in recent years. Over its nearly 300-year history, the cascade system has been no stranger to water shortages. Since about 1813, no less than four of the original nine large lakes have been abandoned. Moreover, the cascade has had to contend with damage from Edwardian sewer digging; enemy action during World War II, the loss of river abstraction rights following national water shortages in the late 20th Century, and latterly infestation by an invasive aquatic weed. Some of the recent problems have now been addressed, and water is once again flowing through the cascade, even though levels have not yet fully recovered. However, the long-term challenge is to create a resilient and sustainable system where inputs are maximised, leakage is minimised, and water can be moved around the system to where it is needed even if a particular lake is drained or “quarantined” for some reason. The City of London engaged consultants LDA Design in November 2014 to prepare a costed “Parkland Plan” to inform discussion on the future management direction of Wanstead Park. The poor state of the lakes was a major concern form the outset, and a specialist hydrological report was commissioned to inform consideration of the problems. The Parkland Plan

had undergone several drafts and was moving slowly toward completion, when the situation was galvanised by a new development. In 2018 the Environment Agency provisionally determined that remedial work needed to be carried out on the dams between the lakes in Wanstead Park in order to comply with the new flood management regulations. A panel engineer confirmed the assessment last June. He advised that an engineering assessment of the dams needed to be undertaken in the first instance. It was anticipated that significant modifications to the current dams would then be required, with initial cost estimates of up to £10 million. No timetable has been set for the engineering assessment, though it is tacitly expected that the City of London will commission it fairly promptly. Once specific works have been identified, the City will be given three years to complete them. This might not sound like good news, but actually it presents a huge opportunity, as it offers the prospect that the statutory work on the dams – which would not come out of Epping Forest’s already stretched budget - would draw in additional money which could be used as match funding for a lottery bid. This would require careful synchronisation but would potentially fund restoration of historic features and improved visitor facilities. It now seems possible that more might be done in the park within a shorter timescale than had seemed possible when the latest version of the Parkland Plan was being drafted. The campaign for Wanstead Park began more than 13 years ago and progress has been frustratingly slow, but it is starting to look as though the end of this long journey may be in sight!

BULLYING and MENTAL HEALTH What struggles do young people face today? A conversation with Elsa Arnold, anti-bullying campaigner

I

have just turned 17 and am studying music, sociology and health for my first year of A-Levels, but my main passion is dance. I have always loved dance and have practiced ballet most of my life. Occasionally I go to pineapple dance studios with aspirations of using my love of dance to help others use their passions to overcome difficult times. The dance studio was my safe space during GCSE’s, where I felt free to express myself and in control of anything I was struggling with. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without having dance to keep me motivated and build my confidence again. I think that everyone can find a passion that can help them through difficulties. I have been bullied at different times in my life and I struggled in Primary school when comments and names people used to call me knocked my confidence. This made my transition into high school a scary prospect. I never really told anyone what happened in primary school, partly through embarrassment but also because I didn’t really understand what bullying was. I believed I deserved what I had experienced and this damaged my selfesteem, causing me to start making every effort I could to fit in with ‘popular’ groups. I was constantly pretending to be someone I wasn’t and tried to change everything I could to make myself ‘better’ and more ‘acceptable’. Looking back, I think my mental health started to deteriorate from here, but when I experienced both verbal and physical bullying in year nine it all came flooding back, leading to a further decline in my mental health. I went to a place I didn’t think I’d come back from, but I am extremely happy that I did and am now able to turn my negative experiences into positive ones. I recently realised that I have spent a lot of time since primary school trying to change things about me, and it’s only now that I am beginning to accept myself for who I am and be OK with that. I am currently a national anti-bullying ambassador for the Diana Award who continue Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world. The Diana Award changed things for me and helped me feel happy again so that I could think about the future. They helped me realise that I can’t change who I am and this quest to alter

who I am is where a lot of my sadness had come from. Of course, we all have good and bad days and mental illness doesn’t disappear with a snap of your fingers, but after a year of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy I’ve had another year to discover things on my own. I think it goes without saying that there are enormous amounts of pressure put on young people today through a variety of mediums. If anyone knows a teenager you will likely witness first hand some of the pressures we face on a daily basis. Social media, which relates very closely to the ‘perfect’ body image and exams are two of the major factors. Exams have a different effect on everyone, but you’re only 16 when you do you take your GCSEs and that is such a huge amount of pressure to be under at such a young age. Equally, the percentage of children who feel the pressure to perform highly in their SATS tests is unnecessary and shouldn’t be happening. Every child and young person is different and faces their own challenges but these are added to by the need to ‘fit in’ on social media. The need to alter how we look and comparing ourselves to others underlies many mental health problems. Mental illnesses in young people are rising and 10% of 5-16 year olds now have a diagnosable mental illness – something needs to be addressed to prevent this figure from increasing further. I now campaign on and offline to raise awareness and help others through struggles with their mental health by showing that it’s okay to say that you’re not OK. There is a misconception with mental illness that talking about how you feel makes you appear weak and it’s what stopped me asking for help for a long time - it sometimes still does. It’s important we remember that at some point most people are going to face struggles and go through difficulties, but when we don’t express our feelings things can get worse. I found my expression through dance and this helped me to overcoming bullying and times where I felt stressed or down. It also improved my understanding of myself and how I communicate my feelings, allowing me to get more effective help. This year in particular, one of my main focuses is promoting the importance of expression

through different campaigns and projects whilst also empowering those experiencing bullying so they feel they’re able to speak and receive the help and support they need. Whatever age you are, if you’re experiencing any form of bullying, please tell someone! It could be anyone you feel comfortable talking to or trust. If you are a parent of a child who is experiencing bullying at school I would encourage you to keep in contact with the school to make sure something is being done to overcome the situation and to prevent problems from arising again. It’s a good idea to have one contact at the school, maybe a head of year or safeguarding officer, who you feel comfortable approaching with any concerns. This collaboration between the student, teacher and parents is extremely important, but it is equally as important to look at the perspective of the bullies and provide them with support too. Overall, I want to play my part in ensuring that every child enjoys their school experience, because it is one that stays with you forever. Nobody should feel trapped, isolated or uncomfortable at school, nor should any child have to go in dreading each day because of the uncertainty of what’s going to happen. There is a bright future for anyone who has been bullied or is struggling with their mental health. Trust me, there is light at the end of everyone’s tunnel. But remember no two tunnels are the same. Take small steps and don’t worry about the bigger picture. Be patient with yourself and everyone around you and let people help you. And of course, my main message is to BE KIND to yourself and to others. Because no act, however small, is ever wasted. And KINDNESS really does have the power to change the world. One of the most important messages that I could give to anyone is to celebrate who you are every day. Celebrate your differences, embrace them and be happy with them. We are all completely different people but we are all equal and don’t deserve to fight a battle with ourselves because someone told us we’re not good enough. Trust me, you’re amazing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise and search for someone who’s not there. You’re good just how you are.

CAMPAIGNING FOR A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE

WA N S T E A D S O C I E T Y A I M S F O R 2 0 1 9

F

resh into the New Year and the Wanstead Society has been asking its members what we can do to make where we live a better place. The message we got was clear;

• Cleaner and greener streets • Better health care services • More policing in Wanstead The Society is, first and foremost, a charity which seeks to work with those in power to protect and improve Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Although we have some funds which we use to plant trees, maintain flower beds or fund litter picks we are clearly limited in our scope and projects, but we aim to do what we can to meet our members asks. CLEANER AND GREENER STREETS We continue to support and fund the Wanstead Community Gardeners who do a fantastic job in maintaining lots of individual areas with native wild flowers. Without these volunteers our bio-diversity would decline even further and we would lose precious green space. Our aim is also to ensure the Council replaces any dead, damaged or diseased street trees. These spaces may only be small but they offer vital life to bugs and bees which in turn help support native wildlife. We have invited our local Councillors to our February meeting to ask for an update on this and discuss how

we can work with the Council to protect and grow local green space in Wanstead. BETTER HEALTH CARE SERVICES Over the last 25 years the population of Wanstead has increased, but our health care provisions have gotten smaller. Wanstead Hospital has closed and we know that King George and Whipps Cross hospitals, while not in Wanstead, are vital to our health care and we aim to work with other groups to ensure their viability. Fortunately we have a practising nurse on our Committee who is advising us on how we can lobby the NHS to improve our health care provision and in November we met with Redbridge’s Cllr Neil Zammett, who sits on the Councils Health Scrutiny Committee, to seek ways in which we can work together to bring more NHS funding to Wanstead. MORE POLICING IN WANSTEAD Since 2013 Wanstead has had no police station and although London has almost a quarter of the UK’s police force, it is no secret that police numbers have fallen across Britain. There is very little we, as an organisation, can do to improve police numbers, but we do attend regular meetings of the police and try to distribute the advice they provide through the Safer Neighbourhoods forums - because prevention is always better than cure. However, next year there are GLA and Mayoral elections and we will raise this issue with those seeking election. A clear message must be, we need more police and the police need more funds and this we can do through our lobbying campaigns and by organising political hustings when elections come around.

5 ways to make your home more relaxing and peaceful If there is one thing that we all want for our homes, it is for it to be as relaxing and peaceful as possible. After all, it is the place that we go to after a busy and long day at work, the place that we unwind in and the place that we relax in. Whilst our homes are going to feel relaxing to us, that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t benefit from a few extra touches to really up the relaxation. To help you create a home that you are going to love to spend time in, we have put together 5 ways to make your home feel more relaxing and peaceful. Find a place for clutter If you want to create a room that is peaceful and relaxing then one thing that you are going to need to look at is clutter. A messy space is never going to be a place that you want to unwind in, so, make the time to give your room a tidy and clean. Think about ways that you can store your clutter to not only make the space tidy, but also not take away from the overall theme and feel of your home. Add in some flowers Flowers not only look beautiful, but they have been known to have a soothing effect on people. They bring colour, they bring life and they bring freshness

to your home and best of all they are known to clean the air too, which means that you are going to be able to breathe deeply and breathe in clean air whilst you are relaxing.

be a specific space in your living room. The idea is that you have everything you need to wrap up and forget about the world outside your front door.

Think about colour One of the most important things to consider in any home is the colour that you are painting. Colour has a huge impact on our mood and how we feel. Calming, neutral tones are the ideal shade to paint a room that you want to unwind in. You need to think about light blues, greens and even shades of grey. All of which can really help to create a tranquil space. Rather than bright colours which will definitely give you the get up and go vibes.

Try to get as much natural light in as possible It makes sense that when you want to shut out the world outside, that you actually shut the world outside away from you. But this can actually have the opposite effect on how you feel. Natural light is incredibly important when it comes to how you feel. So, you need to make sure that you let in as much light as you can. Open up the curtains, pull up the blinds. Make sure that you let in all that lovely natural light and warmth and you will soon feel great.

Create a snuggle zone Who doesn’t love the idea of snuggling up under a warm and soft blanket after a long day? We certainly do. This is why we think one of the best things that you can do is to create a snuggle zone. Of course, that snuggle zone could be on your sofa, it really doesn’t need to

Your home is your kingdom, which means that you want to make sure that it has the right vibe for you. Take the time to think about how you want your home to look and how you can create a relaxing space and in no time at all you will have a castle that you can be proud of n

H

an Cherry, a Pilates instructor covering the Wanstead and Stratford area (Wanstead locals may be familiar with her banner outside the old Wanstead hospital) speaks to us about her passion for Pilates and what drove her to make the jump from the desk job to the Pilates mat. Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in Northampton but have been living in Plaistow for almost 19 years. I began studying computing information systems at The University of Manchester and when I left I found work within the financial industry. I have always had a passion for the great outdoors and staying active. I love outdoor sports and I am a keen cyclist and runner and enjoy hiking and swimming…although I am not very good at swimming. I completed my first marathon last year with a respectable time (which I never thought possible) and am one of the lucky golden ticket holders for the London Marathon 2019 - one more ticked off the bucket list! How did you transition into begin a Pilates instructor? My previous jobs were very much desk bound and it didn’t take long for back pain to creep in. Eventually my back gave in and I was diagnosed with chronic back pain so Pilates became my go-to for rehabilitation. I wanted to learn more about it so I could help myself and I enrolled myself on a course to study Body Control Pilates because it has worked for me in the past and is recognised as an international credential. I didn’t want to return to the corporate world so it was a no brainer to become a Pilates instructor! What are the benefits of Pilates? Pilates keeps you moving and maintains all-around wellbeing. I am constantly surprised by what our body is capable of and I frequently attend workshops and conferences to keep my knowledge current. Most of us lead very sedentary lives which can be damaging over time. Pilates can help to mobilise and reactivate lost movement whilst improving posture and creating a stronger body and mind. It can help with back pain, improve sporting performance, increase mobility and even increase confidence. Personally it has allowed me to do the sport that I never thought I could - I used to shy away from running so Pilates is definitely for life!

Where are your classes and can anyone join? My classes are in Wanstead and Stratford and I teach beginners through to intermediate. I also offer private classes for one or two people as well as small groups of corporate clients. These classes are held every morning on Thursday with evening classes offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For anyone unsure if Pilates is for them I offer an hour’s taster class at £10. I hope that one day in the future I have the ability to own a studio and run retreats so that I can continue to teach and help my clients achieve the impossible.

“Have had several back surgeries and seen countless pilates instructors. Han is among the best. She pays attention to the details (crucial to Pilates), runs thoughtful classes and truly cares about her client’s progress. A gem.”

ormer midwife, blogger, mother of two and Wanstead local Natalie Alexis has been writing her blog ‘Style Me Sunday’ since 2012 in which she covers a wide range of topics including fashion & beauty, parenting and being a mum and body image. The importance of body image promoted by the fashion and beauty industry is a theme that touches almost everyone’s life in some way and Natalie’s candid and thought provoking approach on those who promote the unrealistically unobtainable as ‘normal’ proves a fascinating read. She kindly spared some time in her tight schedule to provide us with her views on these important and topical themes that resonate so strongly with us all.

for clothes’ by River island was a great example of a big brand daring to be inclusive.

Being a mother of two young girls has really inspired me to get involved in speaking out about the way some parts of the media perceive the ‘perfect woman’. My girls are young but are already aware of the lack of diversity portrayed in the media. It is something we talk about regularly. Yes, I am scared of how things may change as they get older, especially with the rise in social media and the way it opens up comparison, but all I can do is talk as much as possible about why and how they can love who they are more. There are some brands that are really embracing a more diverse range of models for their brands and you will probably have seen a few more adverts including a wider range of sizes of models and more representative of different backgrounds. However, this is just the beginning and a lot more work is needed to make this the norm as there are very few differently abled people included -I would love to see some of the bigger brands leading the way on this. Although a recent campaign called ‘Labels are

When it comes to the projects I choose to get involved with, it needs to be something I am passionate about to keep my interest. I am so proud of the work I have done on my Warrior Woman Project in the past, encouraging woman to love their bodies as they are, not look for ‘media perfection’ allowing them to be happy with themselves. I hope to take this project further this year. I have a daughter who is visually impaired so I am particularly passionate about employment for differently abled people. I recently visited a company where the majority of their staff were living with some form of disability - it was humbling and inspiring. Any project that promotes inclusivity, self-love and helps people not to feel so crap about themselves is a campaign I want to be involved in. I would never do any campaigns that are linked to the diet industry and plays on people’s vulnerabilities. My blog and Instagram account are there to provoke thought, with some fashion and fun thrown in. I love what I do, it has given me a voice and for that I will always be grateful.

As an ex-midwife, the way women and mothers perceive themselves is extremely important and the expectations on how you ‘should’ feel and post motherhood women are constantly under pressure to have perfect figures, perfect children and perfect lives. I like to provide a more realistic approach for people to see. I think the more women see that stretch marks/ cellulite/ fat and the reality that we do not bounce back into shape after a couple of months, the less pressure they feel. We all need to know that the Kardashian-style life is unattainable and achieved without a lot of help and money…and anyway, perfect is dull!

ime for Tea is an iconic retro-styled pit stop for anyone who is serious in partaking in a homemade cake and a good cuppa in a relaxed and friendly environment. Located in the elevated row of shops close to Snaresbrook Station it attracts a range of clientele; judges and jurors from the nearby Snaresbrook Court, commuters in need of a refresh, a regular knitting group and everyone else in between. Whether it’s their quaint shop front or the glimpse of the quaint knick-knacks and spotty table cloths, Time for Tea is quite simply a comfortable hub for anyone looking for a friendly local tea-shop haunt, but appearances can sometimes be deceiving… A graduate of musical theatre Emily spent the first ten years working as an actress before taking a year out with her partner to backpack across Asia, eventually feeling the need to lay down roots and build a home together. It was at this time Emily had a chance meeting with the mother of an old school friend who was looking to sell her business. This meeting led to another meeting, this time with family members over a glass of wine, resulting in an offer being placed and then accepted

– and Emily’s ownership of Time for Tea beginning. This support from family and friends has continued, with the occasional appearance of Emily’s mum Judy behind the till and the current assistant manager being Emily’s close friend from a previous panto where they first met as the genie and Aladdin! Since taking ownership in November 2017, fourth generation cockney and South Woodford local girl Emily Linard has been putting her passion for homebaking and theatrical skills into practice, producing all of the home-made cakes inside the shop herself and donning the guise of Snow White for a highly successful ‘Christmas Character Day’ (so successful it will likely be appearing again in Christmas 2019). Working in Wanstead Emily has enjoyed getting to know locals again, making a lot of new friends in both her customers and neighbouring business owners. This strong community feel is something she has tried to capture inside the shop and from stepping inside into the familiar home-fromhome setting you can’t help but relax. The regularly held meet-ups in the shop are a testament to this comfortable atmosphere Time for Tea offers, such as the long

standing ‘Knitters and Natters’ group who regularly meet on a Tuesday and make all of the shops tea cosies. Although this is Emily’s first business and, humbly, she is just happy to have “not run it into the ground or burn it down yet”, her passion to continue to make Time for Tea a success has ensured there are always new ideas and diverse events for everyone to take part in. These events include a tarot reader on the last Sunday of every month, the already mentioned Christmas Character Day, Mother’s Day afternoon tea (which includes a free gift for mum) as well as offering private hire and catering for events such as baby showers and children’s parties. It is clear that from the strong start Time for Tea has enjoyed under Emily that she is doing things well; offering the sanctuary and friendly service that people hope for when entering a tea room, alongside the hot beverages and delicious, home-made sweet treats. Emily and the team would like to thank everyone who chooses to come to Time For Tea and with the continued success you never know, maybe you’ll see a second one...

The Avenue, Wanstead

OIEO £1,450,000 Freehold The Avenue, one of Wanstead’s most highly sought after locations, is close to everything Wanstead has to offer and yet enjoys the feeling of space and privacy thanks to the wide road and large plots. Taking advantage of this location, this home benefits from being just 0.2 miles away from Wanstead’s vibrant High Street and within close proximity of both Wanstead (0.3 miles) and Snaresbrook Station (0.6 miles). The centrality of this home also lends itself to being a fantastic family home, being within a short walk of all Wanstead’s excellent nurseries and schools as well as Wanstead Park (1 mile) with its scenic walks and bike routes. This detached home has been enjoyed by the current owner’s family for over fifty years since its construction in the 1960’s. The solid parquet flooring in the hallway continues into the generous lounge/diner, which can comfortably accommodate a good sized dining table and sofa suite. The large windows and French doors not only provide a great deal of natural light but all year round views over the rare Grade II* listed Georgian summerhouse, which stands within the sizeable, South facing rear garden. There is a further good sized kitchen and separate utility room and a W.C to the ground floor in addition to a conservatory that can be accessed via the garden. To the first floor there are four double bedrooms and a large family bathroom, with the master bedroom benefitting from a separate dressing room and large ensuite. WANSTEAD’S

STRUCTURE t the corner of Wanstead High Street and Grove Park stands the corner house, reputedly named after a Doctor Corner who used the building as his practice for many years (not because of its positioning on the corner of the two roads). Built in 1890 and with a plaque commemorating the astronomer royal, James Bradley (1762), it is an iconic building known well by locals. Bradley originally set up his telescope in a house on the Wanstead Grove Estate – a large estate that was home to the impressive house ‘Wanstead Grove’. First built c.1690 by Sir Francis Dashwood (father of the Hell Fire Club Dashwood) Wanstead Grove originally stood near the junction of Grove Park and The Avenue. The house was later re-built in 1822 following a period of disrepair and demolished in 1889. The Grove Estate covered most of the area between Grosvenor Road, The Avenue and along Nutter Lane and included a long canal stocked with trench and carp which stretched from the A12 to Grosvenor Road, from which a remnant survives as a pond off of Grove Park. The area of Wanstead known as the ‘Counties Estate’ (due to the roads being named after English Counties) formed farm land associated with the estate and the present Leicester Road runs along the course of a footpath which cut across the farmland. Today, two 18th Century garden buildings from the former Grove Estate still survive on The Avenue and one of these lies within the grounds of house number twenty. The building within the garden of number 20 is square in plan and constructed in unusually fine red brick with straight headed sash windows, fielded panelled interior, box cornice, corner fireplace and large sash windows looking towards North and South. It is built on a mound with a grotto beneath, with its brick vault originally decorated with shells and iron slag. The square early 18th century Gazebo may be the summerhouse referred to in a lease of 1713. Another theory is it was a card house used by gentlemen during the early Georgian period to play cards which is why some know it as the ‘card room’, or perhaps it was initially intended as an ice house where its lower levels and sloped sides under the building would be useful for collecting and storing ice? Today the grade II* listed building is included in the statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest and noted as a gazebo with grotto underneath, but the exact use of the building is still not completely clear because of the lack of information and clear reference to the building in documentation. If you have any literature mentioning the possible origins of the building or have any thoughts as to what you believe the property may have been used for based on the information available please get in touch with us as we’d be fascinated to hear from you. You can get in touch with us by e-mailing us on enquiries@pettyson.co.uk or by popping into our office at 11 Woodbine Place Wanstead.
