As always, we’ve got lots of good stuff for you in this issue, and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together. To say that 2017 has been an odd year would be something of an understatement (even Sergio Garcia finally managed to win a major!), but thankfully it’s been business as usual for us here at Petty Son and Prestwich. We’re so lucky to have such amazing clients, both new and old, and we’re delighted to report yet another successful year, despite the testing conditions of the UK housing market at present. We love and appreciate you all. Thank you! From a personal standpoint, I’d also like to take a moment to thank the incredible team we have here, too. Without their help, none of our success would have been possible. We’re currently in our 10th year at the helm of Wanstead’s favourite estate agency and our Buckhurst Hill branch will be celebrating it’s fourth anniversary early next year as well, and it’s all down to our brilliant staff. Thank you, one and all.
Welcome to the latest edition of the GREEN. Traditional values, top spec tech This year has also seen plenty of changes in terms of how we operate online. As some of you will already be aware, we recently launched our brand new website that allows us to showcase our clients’ magnificent properties as they deserve to be seen. Not only that, it also gives anyone searching for property in and around Wanstead and Buckhurst Hill an intuitive and simple way to view the homes we have on our books, which, admittedly, is something we’ve struggled with in the past. Our new site is fresh, clean, and easy to use across all devices. It’s taken an age to put together, but we think we’ve finally got there. Head over to pettyson.co.uk and let me know what you think. I’d love to receive your thoughts and feedback, so feel free to email me at johnw@pettyson.co.uk with any comments or queries you may have. These things are always a work in progress and your opinions would be very much appreciated. As well as our new site, we’ve also changed and added to our behind the scenes software this year
as well. While we’re firmly committed to the High Street model of estate agency (one-to-one human relationships will always trump faceless, cold call centre interactions, in our opinion), we recognise the essential nature of being at the cutting edge of technology, too. It’s all about being able to offer the very best service to you, our customers, and that means making things as convenient as possible without losing the personal touch that has got us where we are today. Take our new Tenant’s Interface as a prime example. This natty piece of software allows tenants to access their tenancy details and other vital documents any time of the day or night. It also provides them with a simple, fuss-free way to report any maintenance issues they may have in their property and keeps them informed of any updates via a smartphone app. We’re confident this new system will bring immense value to both tenants and landlords alike. After all, happy tenants means happy landlords! The key point, however, is that we’re using this state of the art technology as an additional service to our primary business model, not a replacement for it, as other agents have done in the past. In short, we’re still here for you if you need to speak to a proper human being. We simply
want to offer the very best service to everyone, regardless of your preferred means of communication. Still at the heart of your community Despite all of these exciting changes, maintaining our core values is our number one priority, so you’ll continue to see us heavily involved with local community projects, charities, events, and good causes as we move into the New Year and beyond. As many of you know, our involvement in the community is extremely important to the team here and nothing is going to change that. It’s what makes us, us. All that remains is for me to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy, and prosperous New Year. We shall look forward to seeing you all in 2018!

Think before you pave! It’s December, which means it’s winter, and winter means we turn our attention to tidying up the garden and preparing for spring. The Wanstead Society and groups it supports like the Wanstead Community Gardeners, led by Marian Temple, look after a variety of communal gardens in Wanstead. These include the Corner House garden, the flower beds by Wanstead Station, a patch by Snaresbrook station and soon a section of garden within Snaresbrook station itself. On October 8th we held our ‘tidy up the Nightingale Green’ events which we hold every autumn. We believe that everyone should have access to a garden, despite not everyone necessarily being able to afford a house with adjoining green space. Wanstead offers people the chance to take advantage of the fantastic green space available locally by taking part in community gardeners; or as we are sometimes known, “gorilla gardeners”. Over our 20 years we have always taken a keen interest in the public areas where we live and recently we have adopted tree pits in local roads (under the Seeds for Snaresbrook banner) and planted native wild flowers which we hope will encourage local wildlife to thrive. All of this is done for free by volunteers who care passionately about the place they live and aim to bring colour to what is essentially an urban place.
Every small patch of garden and public land is vital for wildlife as natural habitats are diminishing. We are lucky that much of Wanstead is classed as ‘Crown Land’ and therefore cannot be built on. However, we also campaign for greater awareness on how important front gardens are to the eco system. In recent years we have fought against the conversion of front gardens to parking places; it’s not up to us to enforce what people can and cannot do to their own home, but we aim to raise awareness of the benefits of maintaining and nurturing their front garden. A front garden in itself may be small, but as a steady number of these wildlife havens have disappeared over the years to become parking spaces, vast areas of food and shelter for local wildlife across Wanstead have vanished. This has contributed to a decline in native wildlife, like honey bees, which have fewer plants to feed on. In turn, fewer bugs mean fewer birds and the knock-on effects continue down the chain. Another major concern is that with more paved areas surface water has nowhere to go resulting in local flooding. If you have a front garden the best advice we can give is to plant lavender! Its vivid purple colour attracts pollinating bees and for the less green-fingered amongst us it’s easy to maintain (plus it smells great too!). Even window boxes can provide tiny patches of food for wildlife as well as brightening up any property’s exterior. If you would like more advice on gardening or want to get involved with the Wanstead Community Gardeners please e-mail info@wansteadsociety.org.uk or visit wanstead.community.gardeners@gmail.com

Established in Wanstead, East London, Muriel & Me was founded by... Bryony MacQueen in 2017. She set up the design company, producing predominantly prints, tea towels and tote bags of Wanstead iconic buildings and streets after 10 years of working as an Art Editor on high fashion magazines such as Look, Marie Claire and Wallpaper*. However, when she was made redundant in January 2017, Bryony decided to return to her first loves of illustration and printmaking whilst combining her impressive skills as a graphic designer. This collection was inspired by the beautiful simplicity of vintage British Transport posters that urged people to visit the Yorkshire Dales or St Ives by train. Bryony felt that Wanstead should be celebrated and the idea of printing bags for people to display the area’s various scenes would be the perfect platform to do this. It was only when a friend (also a resident in Wanstead’s The Shrubbery building) asked Bryony to design her wedding invites in a similar vintage theme, that she was given the impetus to start Muriel & Me. As a Wanstead resident for nearly seven years, Bryony certainly wasn’t short of inspiration. With her job now finished, she dedicated herself to capturing Wanstead icons such as The Station, George Green, The Shrubbery, Christchurch Green and the ever-popular Nightingale Lane and High Street images (the latter featuring the Cuckfield public house). By taking pictures of her subjects, or just drawing from studies she had made, Bryony set to work on sourcing suppliers and printers for her products. Also on hand to help was the owner of The Art Shop. Having given encouragement
to Bryony in a brief conversation the year before, she returned to the shop to show them examples of her work. They were so bowled over by what she had produced that they placed an order on the spot for cards and tote bags. With her stock now arrived, her first sales were at the Wanstead Maker’s Market, followed by her debut Farmer’s Market appearance. Both were a great success and with her Etsy website up and running, Bryony was receiving orders from ex-Wansteadites as far away as the US and Australia, but for local orders, she is always happy to hand deliver the orders to ensure a personal and professional service. Galvanized by the success of her sales, Bryony then designed more cards, but this time they were geared towards the theme of children’s birthdays. With playful characters and bold colours, The Art Shop once again ordered more and soon they were flying off the shelves. During this time, Bryony had also been commissioned by several people to give the front of their houses her signature graphic treatment. Following comments from the sales she’d done, Bryony also extended her range of subjects to include the Red Lion in Leytonstone, Electric Parade and George Lane in South Woodford, and lastly the Wanstead Flats. The latter encompasses an iconic view of Canary Wharf, whilst also capturing the sheer expanse of grass that the flats cover. What’s in the pipeline? Christmas of course! so look out for her Christmas cards, new tea towel designs and coasters at the Wanstead Makers Market and head to www.murielandme.com for the complete collection.

Sam Jones, the brainchild behind Cocktail Van, provides ridiculously good cocktails at weddings and events, from the comfort of his converted 1964 Commer Auto-Sleeper, Maggie. Sam talks with us about his beloved Maggie, his passion for the business and what he and his team can offer those looking for something a little bit different. “I have always wanted to work for myself, just something I wanted to do since I was young I suppose, and since I worked in cocktail bars and night clubs all my life it all just made sense to me. It started out as a small portable cocktail catering company, but when we bought the van in 2012 we knew this was no ordinary project. The body work for the van went to 5 different garages all saying yes before promptly saying no the next day. We then decided that we would
do it ourselves (alongside working 6 days a week in one of the busiest restaurants in London). We poured every other hour into the van. When we sprayed her for the first time she came out cornel mustard, which was a disaster. I have no style (apparently) so my partner chose to re-spray her with a rose gold champagne look and she did look much better. Her interior was designed by my father in law who, thankfully, gave a lot of time up to help me with it. She was kitted out with copper and oak and made fully functional to run a fast paced cocktail bar out of. We started last year testing the water and seeing how fast she could go; the honest truth is 60 mph, but she can make 60 cocktails in 5 minutes which definitely makes up for it! I just want to make people happy. It’s something I take pride in and I never want to let people down so I make sure that everything is perfect, from the fresh seasonal
products to customising the cocktail list to customer satisfaction; we bring the party to you with your own customised cocktail creation, choice of menu and coloured lights! The fact that I can show up, make people feel welcome, relaxed and ensure they genuinely have a good time before driving away (very slowly) gives me huge satisfaction. I honestly cannot pick a favourite event I’ve catered for because they have all been so equally special, but I do love catering at local community events making smoothies and milkshakes for the kids. As to the future? I’d love to do a charity drive one day to see how far Maggie really can go…..but for now she and I will continue to serve cocktails at people’s unique and special events.”

n Forest Gate, a shop is serving up East end pie and mash, but it’s not quite what you’d expect. With exposed brick walls, low level lighting and feature walls covered in wooden palettes you’d be forgiven for believing you were dining in Shoreditch or Hackney, but the décor provides the perfect backdrop for what is a quirky take on the traditional. This is what Pie Republic is all about; offering a modern take on the traditional pie and mash establishments in the East end. The concept has been brought together by a trio of friends, born and bred in Forest Gate, East London. Fusing their love of the East end pie tradition they have combined flavours from around the world to reflect the culture, flavours and cuisine that make up modern day Britain. “With so many pie and mash cafes closing down, we wanted to bring back the pie and mash culture but with a twist to celebrate the diversity of London.” “A lot of love goes into our food. Our pies are handmade and freshly baked daily.” All pies are served with gravy and a side of your choice. From tender lamb infused with sprigs of rosemary and mouth-
watering ‘Shepherd of Shimla Pie’ which is their take on the classic Shepherd’s pie with an Indian twist, to the classic chicken & mushroom pie; Pie Republic pride themselves on producing tasty, high quality dishes. And if you’re not into pies? In addition their menu includes an array of hearty ‘comfort food’ dishes, such as fish & chips, bangers & mash and burgers, to name just a few - they also serve an allday full English breakfast! With winter on its way a meal at Pie Republic is set to be the perfect place to keep nice and toasty and indulge in your favourite comfort foods, but if you really don’t fancy venturing outdoors they offer local area delivery service which allows you to enjoy your meal in the comfort of your own home. So put your feet up and order or adorn your winter coat and head on down – either way Pie Republic should be on your ‘to do’ list this season.
Women In Need London BY CHRISTINA HARVEY
“My earliest memory is of my mum being threatened by my then stepdad with a knife. Walking into the living room of our Glasgow council flat to find him pinning her to the floor with a blade against her throat is an image I’ll never be able to shake. I grew up in Glasgow with my mother, brother and abusive step-father; a far cry from my current life, settled in Wanstead with my husband and four year old son. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or background and it is something that never leaves you; no child should have to witness that, and when I see my own four-year-old with his Play-Doh or trucks, lost in his own little world, it’s a reminder of how differently our lives started out. One day, pregnant and at breaking point, my mum sought refuge in a women’s hostel. A room in a run down block of flats with no lockable doors, sticky carpets and a shared bathroom became our home over the lonely months that followed. It wasn’t until
my grandmother took us in that my life turned a corner and I became happy and settled. But these experiences never leave you – I thought domestic violence was normal. My first boyfriend at 14 used to pull my hair when we disagreed. I remember a time when I wanted to go to an under18s disco and he grabbed me off the bus to stop me going. It wasn’t until my early 20’s when I met my husband John on holiday that the chain was broken and I found happiness in a secure, stable and non-abusive relationship. I began donating to a local women’s refuge called Hestia, giving them pushchairs, clothes and various bits of baby paraphernalia. Over time I became more involved, eventually meeting my friend Nikki who is herself a mum from South Woodford, both of us collecting and storing donations from incredibly generous people, but we couldn’t provide essentials like sanitary products, underwear and towels. So earlier this year, with the help of my friend Georgie, I launched an ethical fashion label with all profits
going towards covering such costs. Sweatshirts with the WIN [Women In Need] logo on the front have been huge sellers online and nothing makes me happier than spotting someone out and about in one. I get a buzz seeing people like Sadie Frost, Tamzin Outhwaite and Kate Thornton wearing theirs on Instagram too. Gaby Roslin loved hers so much she even invited me on her radio show to discuss it! I’m so proud of the line we’ve created. Not only do they look good, they keep the conversation about domestic violence going. It wasn’t talked about anywhere near as much when Mum was looking for a way out, but at least she managed to get us out of harm’s way. I just want to make sure any women in her situation can do the same today.” To order WIN T-Shirts or find out more about WIN see the website www.womeninneedlondon.com www.facebook.com/ womeninneedlondon Instagram @WOMEN_IN_NEED_ LONDON

On July 1st 2017, our dream became a reality… a big scary reality!! It was farmers market weekend and we were completely overwhelmed by all the support we got from locals - we couldn’t have asked for a better welcome, we are so grateful. Being married just a year, this was our next big adventure. We took on the old launderette as just a shell, and in March 2017 our dream started to take shape. We project managed the whole thing ourselves, (we now know why project managers exist!) getting an unimaginable amount of quotes and doing as much as we could ourselves. Many nights were spent painting and many locals were met whilst painting the shop front! Our families have been a huge help and support, everyone got their hands dirty. Lisa’s Dad made every table by hand, my mum hand stitched every cushion - it’s a real family affair. Even the sofa was sourced from a lovely local family on ‘Wanstead Sell and Swap’! We wanted to create a warm welcoming space that appealed to all ages. I come from a design background and designed the Bare Brew branding, whilst Lisa comes from a sound
engineer background and so is very passionate about the music and vibe of the place. The art on the walls, which is also for sale, is by a local artist based in Leyton, the coffee is from Square Mile just up the road in Hackney and the bread from the Bread Station also based in Hackney and we get our smoked Salmon from the lovely Kevin at Wanstead Fish. One of the things we love about Wanstead is the real sense of community and that’s something we really want to be a part of. Lisa’s family have lived in Wanstead for over 10 years and I grew up in Hainault and we both now live in Walthamstow, so know and have always loved Wanstead. Two nights have already been held in the shop teaching latte art and coffee tasting from around the world, which the locals embraced and really enjoyed, so we have plans for more in the near future. We also have big plans for our weekend brunch menu and different evening events, so watch this space! When we first begun this journey, a lot of people said “not another coffee shop”… hopefully we have proved we are not, although in hind sight that may have been a good name! We are so much more and we can’t wait to show Wanstead what we have to offer. 7 High Street, Wanstead, London, E11 2AA – crew@barebrew.co.uk - 020 8616 8383

He’s a Superman This month sees the return of the world’s favourite superheroes in one film so for your next fix of Henry Cavill, look no further

This November, prepare yourself for the return of the world’s favourite superheroes. On 17th, Justice League will be released, based on the DC Comics Superhero team of the same name, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Henry is most known for his role as Superman in the DC Comics films and it is this role that he will portray in Justice League, with Ben Affleck starring as Batman. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Amy Adams as Superman’s girlfriend Lois Lane.
The fifth film in the DC Extended Universe, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Amy Adams to name a few. In Justice League, the story revolves around Batman and Wonder Woman as they assemble a team consisting of Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg to face the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. Speculation has also begun regarding Justice League: Part 2.
Henry began his career starring as Albert Mondego in the 2002 film adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. The British actor then went on to have minor roles in television shows such as BBC’s The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Midsomer Murders and The Tudors before transitioning to Hollywood films. He gained worldwide fame after playing superhero Superman in Man of Steel in 2013, which became a commercial success and the highest-grossing Superman film of all time.

However, the 34-year old doesn’t take anything for granted. “It’s important to do the role justice. There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it’s a great one to have because it’s a wonderful opportunity. I don’t let the pressures get to me because that’s going to hinder my performance and, therefore, let people down. So I choose to ignore the pressure side of it and focus on doing justice to Superman.”
of Mark Twight, my trainer! The program involved three stages. The first was to gain weight/mass. So I spent weeks eating nearly 5000 calories daily while lifting extremely heavy, to grow bigger. The second stage was to lose fat to sculpt the muscles. I had to do hours and hours of cardio to burn all the fat. And in the last stage, we targeted specific areas of the body. The only thing I did not like is the rowing machine, a machine that simulates the movement of rowing. It is torture!”
But just how does he get his Superman physique? “It was work... a lot of work! I have always loved sports and physical activities, but I have never worked out like this before. To become Clark Kent, I had to be the best friend
Henry will also star in Mission: Impossible 6 in July 2018. The sixth film in the installment, Henry will star alongside Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg and Alec Baldwin. For now though, catch him in Justice League n
There are cafés and then there’s Green Owl Written by Sharon Morrison, Green Owl regular
Green Owl Café & Deli has, in its four years in Queen’s Road, Buckhurst Hill, become something of a landmark. Known equally well for its warm welcome as it is for its exciting menu, this is now the go-to place for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The café is the brainchild of Jane and Marc Linch who live nearby, but this wasn’t a “let’s change our lives and do something different” scenario, both have a background in fine food and hospitality and wanted to use their experience, not to mention their love of good food, to create a foodie haven. Before you think ‘pretentious’ and ‘overpriced’, Green Owl is just the opposite. First, the décor is very relaxed and inviting thanks to Jane’s talent for interior decoration. She’s sourced missmatched second-hand wooden furniture and combined this with interesting vintage pieces and warm lighting. “We place a lot of value on first impressions,” Jane says. “And a chilled atmosphere is just as important because we want our customers to feel instantly at home. We want them to come back too.” Second, you could eat more cheaply if you wanted to, but I’d pay £8.95 for a beautifully cooked and presented Eggs Royale (smoked salmon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce served on a toasted English muffin), served by people who understand the meaning of delivering customer service, as opposed to knowing about it, but not giving a damn. In fact, I have. I was at Green Owl for a meeting with a colleague recently and decided to have a coffee in its secluded courtyard before leaving, but when we saw the ‘Specials’ on the blackboard, there was no going back. I chose a chicken and goat’s cheese salad. Now, that really doesn’t sound out of the ordinary, but so many little touches were added, like grains and pomegranate seeds, topped with an amazing, but not-
too-zingy dressing, it was as delicious as it was interesting. I happily paid £8.95 for that too. Chef Alessandro is responsible for the maintaining the high standards of the freshly cooked food and is always creating mouth-watering additions. The result is a tempting selection. Some of these dishes come and go, but if you’re a regular customer and have a firm favourite, that will always be available. If you’re a vegetarian, you’re in luck, because, at last, you too have plenty of choice. At weekends, Green Owl comes into its own. It’s tailor-made for those who love lazy Saturdays and Sundays; you can eat breakfast up until the kitchen closes at 4.00pm on Saturdays, 3.00pm on Sundays. “We’ve been very lucky with our first café,” says Marc. “We have a lovely clientele and we’re always welcoming new customers too. Jane and I had a vision about the kind of experience we wanted people to enjoy at Green Owl and we feel that we’re getting it right most of the time. We always want to do better and we’re always learning.”
COMING SOON Thanks to the success of their café, Marc and Jane have decided to open their second eatery, Green Owl Canteen, which will be based in Debden’s busy shopping area, The Broadway. The vibe, they tell me, is going to be more urban. Jane is working on the interiors as I write this and I, for one, can’t wait to see what their latest venture has to offer. Whatever it is, I can guarantee it will embody Jane’s signature touch: taste – in both senses of the word. The opening date hasn’t been announced, but regular updates will be posted on the greenowlcafe.co.uk website.

BEFORE AND AFTER: EDWARDIAN HOME MAKEOVER INTERVIEW WITH FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR HELEN STILES
When new owners bought this Edwardian house in Wanstead, they enlisted local interior designer, Helen Stiles, to help turn it from tired and frumpy into a stylish and eclectic family home. We spoke to Helen to find out more. WHY WERE YOU HIRED? The clients were a busy professional couple with demanding jobs, a young child and another on the way. They had a distinct sense of style but wanted help pulling together coherent design schemes. They didn’t want to spend hours scouring the internet for ideas or sourcing items to complement their existing furniture. I can take that pain away and make the process
much quicker and more fun (and pass on trade discounts too)! HOW DO YOU DESIGN FOR FAMILY LIFE? Most of my clients are families, and I love designing homes for real life. I truly believe that you shouldn’t live in a drab, uninspiring house just because your kids might draw on the walls (or you might spill wine on the sofa!) It needn’t break the bank either: you can mix high end with high street, get clever with finishes and add personality with art and accessories to create a home that you love (and will stand up to real life). Surrounding yourself with colours that you love and comfortable furniture can make all the difference. HOW DID YOU BRING PERSONALITY INTO THE INTERIORS? This couple had a distinct sense of style and some quirky collections (Japanese art, Tiffany lamps and artisan whisky to name a few) so I worked with these to create

something special. I turned their back room into a library with built-in shelving to house their huge book collection. In the living room we had bespoke industrialstyle shelving units made to store the vinyl collection, TV and media equipment (rather than traditional painted alcove cupboards). This added to the eclectic feel – together with a mix of mid-century furniture, high street sofas and a Persian rug! HOW DOES INTERIOR DESIGN WORK? My services are as varied as my clients. I enjoy designing for real people on real budgets, so aim to keep things affordable. For some it’s a few hours help with spatial planning, lighting and furniture layout. Others want a complete room scheme (layout, furniture, lighting, accessories) that they can just ‘click and buy.’ Or I can do the full works - from concept to completion using local contractors and craftsmen. We’re all busy and interior design shouldn’t be for the privileged few, we all deserve a home we love!

C
orner Kitchen is a favourite destination for Forest Gate locals and neighbouring East London foodies. You can find authentic Neapolitanstyle pizzas to rival any in the city, alongside free-range and ethicallysourced hearty breakfast and dinner menus. Desserts are ample and the concise list of natural wines, including house wine on tap, comes expertly recommended (Isabelle Legeron, Raw Wine Fair).
The warm design, inspired by the local nature of Wanstead Flats (the entrance to Epping Forest), attracts the thriving community which the team are proud to serve. The walled garden planted with Italian herbs is the perfect sun trap to enjoy an iced Doppio coffee and homemade savoury and sweet pastries. By night, strung with festoon lighting, it becomes an ideal tranquil city escape in which to explore a London-centric craft beer selection, cocktails and sharing boards of Italian antipasti.
Corner Kitchen, located in the heart of Forest Gate (recently voted in the top 20 ‘coolest places to live in the UK’ by the Times), is directly opposite Forest Gate Station which will benefit from Cross Rail in 2019. It’s also a stone’s throw from the Olympic Park and just a few hundred yards along the high street from Wanstead Park Station, meaning its super easy to get to. Corner Kitchen is headed up by local friends biochemist-turned-chef Bethany Chellingworth (Sweet Thursday) and placemaking guru Misty Cudahy (Eccentric). They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week and offer an all-day delivery service via UberEATS.

2017 has been an intensely busy year for Eden’s Trust. We’re a small charity set up by Elli Galvani after she lost her beautiful six-year-old daughter Eden in a tragic fire accident while on holiday abroad.
E
den’s Trust provides facilitated bereavement counselling to parents who have suffered the loss of a child (‘The Healing Place’) and to brothers and sisters who have lost a sibling (‘Say Hello’). The groups, which are free to attend, were originally started in Wanstead, East London. In May this year the charity was proud to realise a dream of adding a group in central London for bereaved parents. We also offer free counselling, and there is no waiting list.
EDEN’S TRUST
We’ve seen a phenomenal effort in fundraising this year. On 28 July we held a Golf Day hosted by Lexus and Petty Son and Prestwich at Woodford Golf Club. This event was in memory of Richard and Emily (whose siblings attend our ‘Say Hello’ groups) and raised an incredible £1,000 for Eden’s Trust and CRY (cardiac risk in the young). On 24 September Luke Eve and Remi-Johns Weekes
ran in the Disneyland Paris Half Marathon and raised over £615 for Eden’s Trust – an amazing effort! On October 12th a Charity Golf Classic at Brentwood Golf Club raised £1630 for the Trust. The event, sponsored by Lexus in Woodford, comprised an 18 hole course with refreshments, prizes, raffle, and drinks and canapés at La Sala restaurant. A fundraising Pamper Day took place on 4 November at the Jack Carter Centre in Ilford. Therapists gave freely of their time to offer beauty treatments, massage, reflexology, Indian head massage, reiki and mehndi. Our next event will be a Zumbathon fundraiser on 24 February at the Jack Carter Centre in Ilford. Further information can be found on our website. We’ve also been making lots of progress in expanding our Board of Trustees. There are now 9 trustees, who bring a diverse range
of essential skills to take the charity from strength to strength. As Elli explains; “Like all small charities there are always lots of challenges along the way, but our aim of making a difference to those who have suffered the loss of a child or sibling remains our driving force. I feel inspired by the impact of our support groups and by the expanded group of Trustees with their wide-ranging skillset. I am so grateful to everyone who fundraises for Eden’s Trust and for the invaluable support provided by our various sponsors.” If you would like to attend a group or you know of someone who would benefit from the support offered by Eden’s Trust, please contact us in confidence by emailing info@edenstrust.org.uk or by calling Elli on 07814 550375. Full information about the support groups is also available at www.edenstrust.org.uk

Could you benefit from the changes in inheritance tax?
Liam Gough is the Head of the Private Client Department at local solicitors firm Edwards Duthie. The firm has offices in Wanstead, Ilford and Stratford and can be contacted on 0208 514 9000. What is the new Residence Nil Rate Band and how will it affect you? The inheritance tax exempt allowance known as the Nil Rate Band has been fixed at £325,000 since 2009. Married or Civil Partnered couples can combine their joint allowances so that they have a combined allowance of £650,000 on the death of the survivor. The new Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) was introduced from April 2017. Initially it will be set at £100,000 and it will increase by £25,000 a year until it reaches £175,000 in April 2020. When coupled with the standard nil rate band the RNRB will potentially allow individuals to pass on a total of £500,000 before IHT becomes payable. Provided the necessary conditions for the RNRB are satisfied a couple will therefore be able to leave their family £1 million free of
IHT on the survivor’s death. Just like the standard nil rate band any unused RNRB on the first death will be transferable so that it can be used on the second death even if the first death occurred before April 2017.
the relief increases so will the threshold so by 2020/2021 estates over £2.35 million will not benefit from RNRB.
However, there are conditions attached to the relief. Firstly, RNRB is only available to those who held a qualifying residential interest. Put simply they must have owned or part owned a property that was their residence. This cuts out the relief for buy to let investment properties but does allow executors to select which property to use where there are two residences. There are provisions to cover downsizing and relocation into a nursing home that allow the sale proceeds to be included in the allowance. However using equity release will affect the value of the relief as only net value of the property will be included.
To start with, revisit your will. Before 2007 many people drafted discretionary trust wills to allow half the residential property to be put into a trust on the first death. This was done so that a couple could use both standard nil rate bands. Since 2007 using a trust like this is no longer necessary because any unused allowance can now be transferred to the survivor’s estate on application by the executors. If your will contains a discretionary trust then you need to consider whether to amend your wills to remove it. A trust is not a lineal descendant and may disqualify the estate from the RNRB.
Secondly, the property must be ‘closely inherited’ which means lineal descendants, children or grandchildren. Nephews and nieces or brothers and sisters are not included in this definition but it does include the widows of any lineal descendants. Finally, the RNRB is subject to a taper provision for large estates over £2 million. Estates over this threshold will see the relief reduced by £1 for every £2 that the estate exceeds the threshold. This means that estates over £2.2 million will lose the relief altogether. As

What do you need to do to ensure that you qualify for the relief?
If you are considering downsizing make sure that the surplus sale proceeds remain clearly identifiable in your estate in a separate account or investment. If you are using the funds to pay for a nursing home then use other funds first in order to preserve the relief for as long as possible. At Edwards Duthie we are offering a 25% discount for anyone who comes in to review their wills in light of the RNRB. Just mention this article when booking your appointment.

How did you find your property? I used to walk past this very unusual block of Art Deco flats everyday on my way home to our rented place on the same road - dreaming of one day living there. The flats reminded me of the candy coloured Art Deco apartments I saw growing up in Mumbai and Calcutta and I would be literally heartsick for them as I made my daily journey. We couldn’t believe when one [the perfect one] came up for sale and we managed to snap it up – it felt like fate. Tell us about the space when you moved in. The apartment was in a good condition but very dated - the whole space was thickly carpeted and windows furnished with heavy drapes, which made it feel smaller that in was. We fell in love with the light - our apartment was at the front of the development and had beautiful 1930’s Crittal windows, which wrapped around its entire boundary. Most of all we loved the outside space in London! It had a balcony that ran around the living area in addition to a small kitchen balcony. The rooms were big and we could see so much potential once we had stripped back the carpets. We renovated most of the space, except for the kitchen in the first three months as we didn’t want to live in a constant state of unrest, having spent over 10 years in the interior design industry this wasn’t an option for me! The Living Room The living room was the major draw of us purchasing the property. Even with its thick carpets we could see the potential of the light flooding in from all windows and the delicious promise of a door that opened out onto the balcony. There was a lot of stripping and sanding to do on the windows as all of the original brass hardware had been painted over with thick coats of paint. Master Bedroom We wanted to keep our bedroom calm and tranquil. The oak four poster was one of our
first purchases when we moved. It reminds me of the beds I grew up with in India and always makes us feel like we have woken up somewhere exotic. Our brass lamps were toted back in suitcases from our honeymoon in Goa, the bedside tables from West Elm and wardrobes and dresser from Ikea. Bathroom This was the first major renovation project, it had dated cream tiles, a clunky plastic bath and the sink and toilet were awkwardly spaced. We replaced the bath with a sleek glass shower cubicle and locally sourced the perfect grey metro tiles for the walls and larger tiles for the floor. We had a cabinet made from walnut wood which hides all our toiletries and sets off the grey tiles. We fixed outdoor lights with filament bulbs on either side of our mirror which gives the space a cosy atmosphere. Kitchen This was the last room that we renovated, two years after we moved in. The kitchen was narrow with wall cabinets positioned halfway down walls with huge amounts of wasted space above. The fridge blocked off most of the light from the window making the hallway feel dark. With a new kitchen we wanted to fit in as much storage as possible. Everything was ripped out and Ikea’s Lidingo kitchen was fitted with as many drawers as possible. We picked lit glass cabinets as a central feature to show off our tableware and to give the cupboards a break, providing the small space with a sense of airiness. In contrast to the classic kitchen we went for a modern theme with our flooring and tiles. The flooring was Herringbone Oak and the tiles Linear Gloss White large metro tiles from Topps Tiles which were laid in a herringbone pattern. We wanted to keep the opposing wall as cabinet-free as possible, so hung a long copper rail to hang the pots, pans and utensils that we use every day; it’s practical as well as beautiful. The finishing details were a large butler, a Steampunk Chandelier from Historic Lighting and our hardware which was
Kitchen
all carefully considered in a brass finish. Balconies The balconies were something we tackled as soon as the weather allowed. Both balconies were a concrete mess – the surrounding walls were dirty, the floors were covered with debris that had blocked up drains. We swept, scrubbed and laid down miracle product ‘Ikea PLATTA’; clip in wooden tiles that transformed both balconies and made them streamlined and clean. It’s a joy to step out there barefoot in good weather now. Where did you find your inspiration? We knew exactly what we wanted when we saw the space – working for the likes of interior design magazines Elle Decoration, Living Etc and running my own design blog The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Growing up in India I was influenced a lot by my grandmother and my mother’s homes - a mix of European and Indian aesthetic - airy, classic and a little bit luxurious. I made up some mood boards [and love looking back at them now everything is done]. We wanted to create a simple and elegant home with good bones. We sourced the best paint, flooring and tiles we could find and spent three extremely tiring months stripping, painting, sanding and tiling all the rooms. We kept any original features we could and love our vintage internal glass doors. The flooring was in a bad state so we replaced it in both bedrooms and the living room with real oak but kept costs down by using a variety that came in shorter planks. We painted the room in elegant Cornforth White by Farrow & Ball and it’s still my favourite shade in the whole home. We are your local hospice. We are Saint Francis Hospice - an independent charity that provides outstanding, compassionate end of life care to over 1,600 people with a life-limiting illness each year. The hospice itself is located in Havering-atte-Bower but we provide the majority of our care in people’s homes in the communities of Redbridge, West Essex, Brentwood, Havering, Barking and Dagenham.
Life-limiting illnesses are conditions that have no cure. However, with the right care and treatment, we can help people live their lives to the fullest. We care for people with many different diseases including cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure and neurodegenerative diseases. The Saint Francis Hospice team are specialists in their field. They include doctors, nurses, social workers, counsellors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, complementary therapists and pastoral care staff. We need to raise approximately ÂŁ7.3million every year in voluntary income so that our services can be provided free of charge to our local community. To find out more about the care we provide, or how to support the hospice, please call 01708 753319 or visit our website www.sfh.org.uk Search Saint Francis Hospice

We all know how much Wanstead Park is enjoyed by local residents and visitors, but did you know that there is also a busy programme of events organised by Friends of Wanstead Parklands volunteers? Friends of Wanstead Parklands has a membership of several hundred members plus many more from its associated groups. We have an active group of volunteers, each with their own interests and skills. We hold regular meetings, walks and events in the park. Our mission is to tell the story of Wanstead Park to its visitors, to improve its facilities and recreate in places some of the atmosphere of the ancient gardens and park. We run a number of guided walks through the park as well as talks on aspects of the park’s unique history. This year our AGM featured a presentation of historic postcards featuring the park; these provided a fascinating insight into the park and have subsequently been
shared online and are regularly posted on our Facebook group, enhancing our knowledge and understanding of the park. For children, we’ve run themed craft events this year – for Valentines and April Fools. We started the ‘Wanstead Park Children’s Nature Club’ this summer and are running quarterly events themed around the seasons. The aim is to get children and their families out into the park (in all weather!), to help them develop a love for nature and their natural environment. You will often come across our stall at local events – selling mugs and postcards, books and DVDs about the park. We meet regularly with the City of London Corporation to identify areas where we can work together to improve the park. As part of this work, Friends of Wanstead Parklands raised £8,000 from Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme to replace the seating around the
tea hut and worked with the City of London Corporation on the design and installation. We are also supporting a potential bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for much needed funds to improve the park. So why not join us for one of our events or even volunteer to give us a hand? Spark is a youth work charity, the Loughton branch of the national charity Worth Unlimited. Spark offers mentoring and counselling services to young people in the area, as well as offering practical support to 16-19 year olds who need support with finding their direction in life. In addition, Spark offers a Youth Club to secondary school students after school on Mondays and Thursdays. These services are all free and are offered because we at Spark believe that every young person has untold potential and we want to help them to release that potential and realise their worth. However, in order to provide these services we need to raise funds. In an increasingly challenging funding landscape, many charities are turning to Social Enterprise as a way of increasing finances, but the benefits can reach much further than just the bottom line; something we at Spark are discovering upon entering the world of ‘social enterprise’ by producing our own cards. What are Social Enterprises you ask? Social enterprises are businesses which are set up to change the world! Like traditional businesses they aim to make a profit but it’s what they do with their profits that sets them apart – reinvesting or donating it to create positive social change. (www.socialenterprise.org.uk)
If you are reading this and interested in purchasing one of our young people’s fantastic cards then you will be happy to know that the first line of cards will be available for Christmas at a price of £4 for a pack of 6 cards. You can purchase them through either the Spark Facebook page or via the phone and email address below.
We involve all of the young people we work with ensuring they each have roles to play, even if they are just with us for an hour a week. We currently have young people acting as business and operations managers or as part of the sales and design team. The roles allow them to develop their understanding of business whilst building maths and finance skills, developing their artistic and design skills with a clear purpose and increasing their confidence through successfully working in a team. All the profits made from the social enterprise will go back into continuing to provide excellent support to young people.

WAKE CATERING SERVICES
The Poppy Pantry is a little hidden gem in the City of London Cemetery, a fantastic café run by ex-black cabbie Paul Charters and his wife Gill. The pantry, which was taken on by Paul after he came across the spot on a long Sunday walk by chance, has been successfully up and running for a year in December 2017 and they invite anyone who visits the City of London Cemetery to pop in and have a coffee and a cake whilst enjoying the stunning surroundings on a sunny day, or beautiful building on a greyer day; being open 362 days a year with unlimited free parking there is really no excuse not to pop by and relax in the grounds with a slice of cake and hot beverage!
which is proving to be very popular. They have had some excellent testimonials, with customers attesting to how Paul and his team take pressure off families and individuals at such a stressful time. The Hall caters for up to 80 people and knowing that the service and catering is all within one place really does seem to make a difference. The Pantry also offers a range of menus for wakes with bespoke ‘themed’ menus being catered for upon request.
The Pantry also offer a Wake Catering Service which is situated in the Hall within the grounds of the Cemetery,
