John Wagstaff MNAEA, MARLA | Director

Welcome to the latest edition of The Green. This issue is, as ever, jam-packed with local goings-on and plenty of our latest property listings too. I hope you enjoy flicking through it! Where to begin? There’s been so much happening since we last published The Green it’s difficult to know! The triggering of Article 50, the calling of a snap election, changes to landlord taxation...it’s all go, isn’t it? I guess the sensible thing to do would be to try and find a common thread between everything and tie it all together. With regard to the property market and all that has gone on, the key takeaway will be that there’s an element of uncertainty in the air. Even the most astute analyst would have to admit the coming months are somewhat of a mystery. However, there are some simple facts one can to take into consideration when forecasting how the housing

market will behave...regardless of what has gone before and what lies ahead. Probably the most important factor is the region in which we operate. Wanstead, Buckhurst Hill, and their surrounding areas are perfectly situated to ride out the blips of Central London’s prime property market. While house prices in places such as Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster continue to take major hits, we expect to see minor readjustments at worst locally - much of which has already been incorporated into prices. As I’m sure you’re already aware, our location is highly sought after, with incredible transport links and amazing schools, so demand, if anything, is growing. Despite the drop in prices centrally, the vast majority of Londoners simply cannot afford to live in Zones 1 and 2 anymore, and they are looking east for solutions.

This brings us to my next factor: supply and demand. It may be cliché, but it truly is a strong driver of the housing market, and something which is clearly out of balance. The amount of buyers is currently far higher than the local market can accommodate, so house prices in the area will naturally enjoy a degree of protection as a result. Another point to remember is that those excess buyers still need a place to live, so the major change will likely be seen in the rental market. Home ownership has always been a big thing in the UK, but many millennials are, unfortunately, having to rethink their property goals. The knock-on effect is clear - the rental market is going to strengthen over the coming months and years.

be able to enjoy all of the regular events that take place at spots such as Wanstead Tap, The Larder, The Duke, and countless others as well, so there’s no excuse to stay planted to the couch! If you want to keep up to date with all that’s happening in and around East London and West Essex, our Twitter and Facebook accounts are a good place to start. Whatever you end up doing this summer, I hope it’s a good one for you. Bring on the sun!

John Wagstaff

Despite the hysteria in the media surrounding landlords and the recent changes to taxation, buying property to rent is still an extremely solid investment. Sure, landlords would have rather things had remained unchanged, but do the new rules mean buy-to-let is dead? Absolutely not. Property investments have consistently outperformed other speculative ventures in the past. Unless the incoming government can magically produce a couple of million homes out of thin air, this is set to continue demand is simply too high for it not to. So, although there is definite uncertainty, I think things will largely continue as they have before. In short, it’s business as usual. What’s happening locally Things always begin to warm up as we move towards the second half of the year, and I’m not just talking about the weather. As you will see throughout the magazine, there’s lots going on in the area over the coming months, so finding something to do locally shouldn’t be a problem in the summer. St John’s School in Buckhurst Hill will be holding their annual Summer Fete on July 1st and the hugely popular Walthamstow Garden Party returns to Lloyd Park on July 15th - 16th. Throughout the summer you’ll also

Street Spirit Wanstead

Article by Diana Watson

I

never realised what a difference organising a street party would make and would recommend it to anybody. To say it’s hard work is an understatement (it takes over your life and house for a while). Even with two of us in charge we have made it a bi-annual event so we get a breather every other year! With teams of helpers, without whom it just wouldn’t be possible, I can’t describe how rewarding it feels when it all finally comes together. On the day it’s all about closing the road and gathering the teams to help set up. We have the entire street decked out with tables and chairs running the length of the road and there is always plenty of bunting, because you can never have too much bunting! We always begin by sitting down together to share food and drink and invite the Mayor and Pearly Queen along to join us. There are competitions galore; the best decorated house, children’s fancy dress and best dressed pets. We’ve had the oldest and youngest residents and Gordon Road talent competitions with medals and rosettes awarded to mark the day. The jelly eating contest is always popular as are the traditional style organised street races and it’s always the adults cheating in the egg and spoon and chuck the welly! A few more highlights are music from live bands, face

painting and crafts for children to enjoy and soft play areas for babies and toddlers. Being part of running such a large scale event has made me appreciate how lucky I am to live in such an amazing area. We have held four street parties so far in Gordon Road and Wanstead has a unique community spirit and local pride. People are so on board with the celebrations it proves that those who say Londoners are an unfriendly bunch are completely wrong. We all love being part of a tight-knit community and any excuse for a knees up and a few glasses of Pimms together never goes amiss! As well as the success of the day there are some huge knock on benefits; residents getting to know neighbours better, building new friendships, strengthening our neighbourhood watch and raising awareness and caring towards our more senior neighbours. Since the street parties first started we set up a residents group to share information and recommendations for things such as tradesmen, local activities and events. Gordon Road also hold other social events which include meals out to local restaurants, a book club and pub quiz nights, Christmas carol singing in the street and tree pit planting in the springtime. The Street Party itself just wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support from so many of the local businesses which includes Petty Son and Prestwich! The many generous prize donations are raffled off to help cover our running costs and support donations to our local Pearly Queen Doreen’s nominated charities.

To finish off a fantastic day we end in style with a highly competitive tug of war between the odd and even house numbers, a good old Cockney sing song and a riotous Hokey-Cokey! My advice to anyone thinking of holding a street party is roll up your sleeves, rope in your neighbours and go for it

An interview with Karen Humpage, local artist

K

aren Humpage is a local artist who has a varied background in many mediums but now specialises in house portraits in and around the local area. We speak with her about her work, past and present, and why she has such a deep connection to the local area.

How did you begin to paint house portraits?

In the nineties my husband John and I were members of a growing circle of cemetery friends’ groups in London. Wandering around the beautiful, but oft-neglected Victorian gravestones and mausoleums inspired me to paint these crumbling, patinated ivy-clad but intricate structures. I then painted portraits for a gallery and when they asked me if I could paint someone’s house I reasoned it was no different to painting a mausoleum and so began the business of painting houses.

How did you progress from there?

I got made redundant in 1995 so took the daunting step of becoming self- employed. I took a City & Guilds course in signwriting, thinking that if people didn’t want pretty pictures they would still need shop signs! Alongside house’s I’ve also painted portraits of people and pets, childrens’ wall murals, and of course, signs. Recently I’ve been indulging my own interest in trees and have painted some watercolours of local trees. Currently I split my time between personal artwork and

commissions whilst working part-time at a picture framers called the Rowley Gallery in Kensington making bespoke picture frames with traditional methods.

What about the cows?

I made a casual request on Facebook last year for photos of cows wandering the streets of Wanstead and Woodford, as I remembered them as a child walking up our road eating all the roses. I received hundreds of replies and humorous anecdotes, which inspired me to do a series of cow paintings based on these quotes. I’ve got about 20 now, which I may turn into a book (if I can find a publisher) or do a run of art prints for sale.

What are your connections with Wanstead? Wanstead has always been a favoured location for me as there are many period houses with interesting architectural details, but I was born and grew up in Woodford Green. As a girl I loved horses and I rode for many years out of Snaresbrook Riding School, over the Hollows and through the forest. In my teens I’d get the bus to Wanstead

every day and walk to and from Nightingale High School. Wanstead was very familiar territory to me, and just a further extension of Woodford. Wanstead’s got a great ‘villagey’ feel and community spirit, something many towns could do well to emulate!

What do you do to relax?

Invariably you’ll find me in our garden. It’s largely a garden for wildlife, with a pond and lots of plants for pollinators and we’ve been lucky enough to have hedgehogs. I spend a lot of time taking photos of garden wildlife and I write about it in a monthly blog. Recently I took part in a ‘Trees for Cities’ mammoth tree planting day in my local park; I was really touched by the amount of people who came along to help. It’s heartening how many people from all walks of life genuinely care for the environment and their surroundings. We all had a really good day mucking in together and would recommend anyone taking part in one of these events. www.karenhumpage.turnpiece.net/ blog.rowleygallery.co.uk/tag/karenhumpage

The Arch 352 Winchelsea Road Forest Gate London E7 0AQ www.thewansteadtap.com I have a confession to make… I am not a big reader. I suppose nowadays with the evolution of smart phones and tablets there isn’t such a big stigma as perhaps there once was, but I have always felt guilty that I don’t spend more time reading. Confession number two; until recently I had never been to The Wanstead Tap (TWT). Despite countless recommendations from our sellers and buyers who have been and loved The Tap, I have always relied on my regular Wanstead haunts of The George, The Manor House and if I’m feeling adventurous The Cuckfield (It is no coincidence the ‘adventurous’ option is a further walk from my home). So when we were offered the chance to attend a reading of Jake Arnott’s The Fatal Tree by the author himself at The Tap I was by all accounts a little apprehensive.

so the fact he came indicates he is either ‘a keeper’ or he has a bigger interest in IPA’s than I thought (TWT has a reputation of offering a fantastic range of IPA’S and spirits). As we pulled up, it is fair to say TWT is fairly unassuming. Tucked under an alcove of a railway bridge at the end of two residential roads you’d be forgiven for not noticing it, especially in the pouring rain. Thankfully I had google-mapped The Tap before we arrived so was confident we had come to the right place. Inside the tap is not huge but this provides a fantastic feeling of intimacy and the decoration is trendy and minimalist with an industrial edge, mainly attributed to the corrugated metal roof, wooden bar, leather sofas and freestanding metal racking showcasing TWT’s amazing array of beers and ales. The selection for designated drivers was also excellent– a good selection of Fentiman’s and fruit juices without a J20 in sight was one I welcomed!

say about me, I like being proven wrong. Jake took the stand and was fantastic. He was amusing, entertaining and despite the regular interruption of the overhead trains he was absorbing throughout. The Fatal Tree, Jake’s new book based on the life of Edgeworth Bess, a former maid disgraced and forced into a less reputable line of work in East London, was evidently very well researched which made the story more believable and gripping – I actually began to care about how her life and how it would play out. After the reading, which flew by, I bought a copy of the book and got it signed. As the words “I don’t usually read a lot but…” left my lips Jake’s look of surprise (and borderline sadness) made me realise – some people do still care if people read or not and quite rightly so! So if anyone is looking for a new favourite author, or wants to enjoy a drink at a trendy bar offering a fantastic range of beers and spirits, I would

An Introduction to The basics Surrounding party walls

The Party Wall etc. act 1996 is an act of parliament which requires anyone proposing works to their property to formally notify their neighbours before commencement, allowing them the opportunity to have the works reviewed by a Party Wall Surveyor. The Party Wall Act is there to facilitate and enable building work, protecting all parties from both damage that may occur and incorrect claims by clearly identifying pre-existing and post-work damage. In most cases it is necessary to formalise matters under the

Owner). The Award is then served upon all parties and works can commence. In most cases the Surveyor/s will return upon completion of the construction work and will re-inspect the neighbouring property to identify any damage if this has occurred.

Act if you are undertaking a loft or rear extension, particularly in a terraced or semi-detached property. Once a notice has been served upon your neighbours they have the option to either consent to the works or have a Party Wall Surveyor represent them. That Surveyor can either be what is known as an ‘Agreed Surveyor’ whereby one individual acts for both neighbours impartially, or alternatively the Adjoining Owner may appoint their own Surveyor and the two Surveyors will then liaise in order to bring about and agreement.

The Hopps Partnership are on hand to offer specialist advice whether you are a Building Owner planning on undertaking building work or you are an Adjoining Owner who has been served a Notice by their neighbour. Our team of surveyors have a wealth of experience and would be happy to speak with you regarding any queries or concerns.

Once the Surveyor/s have been appointed the next step is to record the condition of the Adjoining Owner’s property in what is known as a schedule of condition. This will list any and all superficial defects noted within that property and this will later be used to assess whether any damage has occurred. The Surveyors will then produce a document called a Party Wall Award which includes the schedule of condition, the architectural and engineering drawings and the method statements as well as any other pertinent information. The Award sets out all parties’ rights and obligations, including such items as the hours of noisy work permitted and any restrictions, any particular risks and steps taken to mitigate the risk, the nature of the works in general and the Surveyors fees which are all payable by the party undertaking the building work (known as the Building

You may have heard the term ‘party wall’ before but have little or no idea what a party wall is or when you’d need to get a party wall expert involved? Here, we speak to a local expert on the subject, Robert Hopps, chartered surveyor and director of The Hopps Partnership; a local firm of surveyors based in Wanstead, specialising in pre-purchase reports and matters under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996.

The

Poppy Pantry

&

Wake Catering Services

M

y name is Paul Charters and I have lived in Wanstead all my life. I worked as a Black Cab Driver for over twenty five years and I consider myself to be an amateur historian specialising in World War II. I have run 18 Marathons worldwide and numerous half marathons. I met my fiancé Gill (soon to be my wife this June!) nearly twelve years ago and inherited three lovely step daughters. I was out for a long walk one Sunday with Gill and her brother Spencer and we thought we would finish off with a good breakfast. We went to the City of London Cemetery Café only to find that there wasn’t one anymore and it had been shut down. It was then that Spencer suggested taking over the business could be a good move for me as I had wanted to get out of the cab business for some time and was looking for a new venture. I started to look into it and after doing some background work and submitting a tender we were lucky to be given the chance. After numerous attempts to name the Pantry my step daughter, Victoria came up with name ‘The Poppy Pantry’. We all agreed the name was very fitting given my interest in WWII and that some of the brave men and women who served are buried here. The rest, they say, is history!

It wasn’t all plain sailing and I consider myself very fortunate as my dad helped me with financing the pantry and my stepdaughter Danielle’s partner Chris is a solicitor so he helped me with the legal side. Tony, my accountant was invaluable (everyone needs a good broker!) and another of my stepdaughters, April, pulled it all together on our first opening weekend before Christmas – it was manic but the staff were brilliant. Since then we have gone from strength to strength and I have some really lovely staff working for me; they just gel and work fantastically well as a team. The staff in the Cemetery have all made us feel very welcome.. In fact everyone has just been amazing! We invite anyone who visits the City of London Cemetery to pop in and have a coffee and a cake whilst enjoying the stunning surroundings on a sunny day, or beautiful building on a greyer day. We also offer a Wake Catering Service which is situated in the Hall within the grounds of the Cemetery, which is proving to be very popular. We have had some excellent testimonials of our work and customers are always telling me how it takes the pressure off at such a stressful time. Knowing that the service and catering is all within one place really does seem to make a difference and I

hope to be able to provide our services for a long time to come. I would like to think that when people visit The Poppy Pantry they can feel at ease with the pleasant surroundings and the poppy theme. There is nothing better than sitting outside on a sunny day with family and friends or albeit on your own listening to the fountain and feeling peaceful. There is a green for the children to play on so that they do not feel restricted when the adults are eating and talking. We offer an all day breakfast with a good selection of quality basic food with plenty of refreshments. Seeing new faces and the regulars always puts a smile on my face. I have met some wonderful people even in the short time that we have been open. I love listening to their stories albeit happy or sad ones. Nothing pleases me more than when my family visit and I know that they are proud. I would like to think that our customers enjoy the experience that The Poppy Pantry has to offer and my vision is that we can continue in the direction that we are going – onwards and upwards!

It has been another busy and highly productive year for us at Eden’s Trust. This small charity with a huge heart was founded by Elli Galvani following the sudden and tragic death of her beautiful sixyear-old daughter Eden in a fire accident whilst on holiday. As Elli tried to come to terms with Eden’s death she became painfully aware of a gap in specialised counselling and decided to set up a range of guided support groups (The Healing Place for parents, and Say Hello for siblings) in Wanstead. From Monday 15th May 2017 there will also be a new monthly group starting in London SE1. The group will take place on the third Monday of every month at a central location accessible from Southwark, Blackfriars, Waterloo and London Bridge stations, and a variety of bus routes. It has been a dream of ours to expand our services and offer our free support groups to more people, and we are thrilled to have found such a highly accessible central location.

Eden’s Trust

The new group will be for bereaved parents initially with the aim of providing a group for siblings further down the line. If you, or anyone you know, would benefit from this support, please contact us in confidence by emailing info@edenstrust.org.uk or

by calling Elli on 07814 550375. Full information about our support groups is also available at www.edenstrust.org.uk/ support-groups/. We are also extremely proactive in raising funds via a number of different activities and events. On Sunday 9th April 2017, the charity attended its second Brighton Marathon. It was a truly inspiring day: all six runners (some of whom were running their first ever marathon) completed the race, raising much needed funds for Eden’s Trust. We are immensely proud of our runners - Adrian Binns, Daniel Blair, Dan French, Nadia Quigley-Lewis, Nick Marcelle and Shelly Khaled – and so grateful for the huge effort they have made to raise funds and

complete this challenging 26 mile course on the hottest day of the year so far! The charity’s next exciting fundraising event will be its fourth annual Zumbathon, taking place on Saturday 1st July 2017 at the Jack Carter Centre, The Drive, Ilford, IG1 3PS. This fun and inspiring event attracts around 50 attendees each year, and a number of supporters who sell cakes and other items and donate the sales proceeds to the charity. Full details of the July Zumbathon are on the Eden’s Trust website at www.edenstrust. org.uk/events

We hope to see you there!

Eton Manor

RugbyAClub brief History The Eton Manor Club has a rich history, dating back to 1913 with the club playing a wide variety of sports. At the beginning of the 1927-28 season rugby was introduced at Eton Manor and a mixed team of Old Boys and Boys Club members formed an initial training squad with fixtures arranged for the second half of the season. For the following years the club fielded a regular fifteen playing friendly fixtures until the outbreak of WWII. During the war years, as for the majority of Eton Manor Old Boys sports, rugby was cancelled. Towards the end of 1945, as members were returning to civilian life, the clubs rugby section was reformed once again recruiting boys’ club members. During the 194748 season, with many boys’ club members playing regularly, a Boys’ Club Team known as ‘The Colts’ was raised. Some four/five seasons later the club was able to field two or three junior teams on a regular basis with most of their fixtures against local schools. During this time many of the boy’s club teams represented the London and International Boys’ Club Teams. As the Boys became of age and transferred to the Old Boys section the clubs strength grew allowing the club to regularly field four regular sides to play at a higher standard. In 1976 with the closure of its clubhouse and playing fields, the rugby club was forced to restructure. Similarly, in 1992 the club again had to restructure and some four years later acquired its current home and again became successful to rebuild. Fast forward to the present 2016-17 season and the club regularly fields four senior teams in London & SE and Essex Rugby Union leagues, plus a strong and ever growing youth team with our junior (under 13 to under 18’s), mini (under 5’s to under 12’s) and ladies squads at under 13 and 15. We have strong community at the club and always welcome new members. If you are thinking of getting involved please get in touch on info@etonmanor.net or just come down to training Tuesday and Thursday 7:30pm or pop down on a Saturday!

S u s h i & B u n s

A little hidden gem in Aldersbrook has up sticks and headed to the South Woodford area! Petty’s is pleased to announce that Sakura, an authentic, Japanese eatery run by ZawWin and his wife Cherry, have moved their successful business to Hermon Hill. As always, we got in touch to ask our new neighbor to tell us a little bit more about themselves…..

Tell us a little about yourselves and Sakura.

The Japanese call the blossom of the cherry tree ‘sakura’. The meaning of cherry blossoms in Japan runs deep, known for its overwhelming beauty, but also for its enduring expression of life, death and renewal; the sakura reminds us that life is short and beautiful, just like the cherry blossom that falls from the tree after just a few days. Also my wife is called cherry so it seemed a fitting name! As a couple we have worked for nearly ten years in the Japanese food industry and wanted to share our love, respect and enthusiasm for the food in our own business in a new venue with its own unique atmosphere. We have learnt so much from our working for others but knew that the time was right to strike out on our own. Our first shop (Sakura- Japanese Café & Sushi Bar) was in the Aldersbrook area of Wanstead and it was very successful with many happy and loyal customers enjoying the open kitchen, but being very small and with a continually growing business, both in the number of dishes we offer and in the number of customers we serve, now is a natural time for a bigger venue closer to more people in South Woodford.

Why is Japanese food getting more popular in the UK? People’s eating behaviour is changing –

more and more, people want food that is healthy and fits well with an active lifestyle. Japanese food is typically clean, not greasy and does not leave you feeling overly full or sleepy. It does feel like you are doing something good for your body. Also, unlike the majority of takeaways we have an open kitchen, so customers can see our chefs at work as we have nothing to hide from our customers! We are proud of the high level of hygiene in our kitchen and the skill and professionalism of our chefs. We know that our customers enjoy seeing how we prepare their dishes, and we also enjoying talking to our customers while we work.

Why Hermon Hill?

This is a very friendly and supportive community which values its local small businesses, despite easy access to places such as Westfield in Stratford or central London. Despite Japanese food being a new concept to some, we hope the health benefits of Japanese food will encourage people be open-minded enough to give it a chance. Word of mouth is the most powerful tool we have. We build up great relationships with many customers who can talk to us while they wait for our freshly made food. One customer was so impressed with our food he sent a review to the local website for Wanstead which is read by a couple of thousand locals, spreading the word even further!

Beckham’s future He recently hit the headlines after being involved in an email hack scandal but this month, David Beckham will be hoping to return to normality4

Beckham’s future Cheryl’s baby joy!

In February, David Beckham hit the news after a number of alleged emails were leaked which didn’t paint him in a very positive light. Fast-forward three months and it appears the Beckhams have put the negative press behind them and are looking onto bigger and better things. Insisting that the leaked emails have been doctored, the famous couple have put on a united front. However Victoria did speak out about the alleged emails in which David supposedly made crude remarks about the Honours Committee after he was snubbed for a Knighthood, saying: “We all have to be optimistic and positive.” Both David and Victoria have also been posting a series of loved-up snaps on social media and we think the family look stronger than ever. On May 2nd David Beckham turned 42 and the family man certainly doesn’t look it. A former English professional footballer player, he’s played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and the England national team to name a few. David is the first English player to win league titles in four countries and is often considered as one of the world’s most beautiful men as well as one of FIFA’s greatest living players. In May 2013, he announced his retirement, after a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.

He may have retired from the sport nowadays but he often has time to reflect on his career, viewing the infamous red card incident during the 1998 World Cup as one of his, “top five career moments… It was difficult for me as a player, and as a person. It made me mature very quickly.” He also admitted that he’s found retirement hard. “It was always going to be difficult, no matter how many children I have got to take my mind off things. There was always going to be a moment that I was going to find tough. It wasn’t straightaway, but I had a three-week spell when I was really struggling.” David is still considered a huge part of football and an expert in his field. It’s no surprise then that the British father has been snapped up by the Chinese government - to help the country win the World Cup. David will appear daily on Chinese television introducing a series of coaching videos for youngsters, hoping to inspire the next generation. Together with his wife, Victoria Beckham and their four children, they’ve created a multi-million pound worth and are often described as an empire. For years, the duo have been able to enjoy Brand Beckham but at the start of 2017, the mask may have slipped and the public’s idealistic views on the pair were rocked. Nobody can say what the future holds n

Buckhurst Hill Football Club

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Petty and Son for their tremendous support throughout the season and once again allowing us the opportunity to talk all things Buckhurst Hill in yet another edition of The Green. I wanted to start by mentioning what a fantastic evening we had at our recent dinner and dance in February of this year, with the more energetic members of our club dancing until the early hours of the morning! Through the hard work of Neil and Claire Leahy, generous sponsorship and donations towards auction prizes the club raised in excess of ÂŁ10,000 which was quite incredible, so thank you to everyone and we look forward to next year. We are now entering the final weeks of the season (incredibly our 32nd) and there have been

many highlights, with the growth and success of our girls teams, the Buckhurst Hill Lionesses, the most satisfying of them all. The club is now preparing for our annual presentation on Saturday the 10th of June which is held at Roding Lane in a huge marquee, with over 1000 people in attendance with all the teams from our mini kickers to our first team receiving trophies and special awards. It promises to be a great celebration and a fantastic opportunity for us to say a huge thank you. These events do not run without a huge effort from a very small number of people and the club would love to hear from anyone who would like to provide individual sponsorship, advertise their local business, have stands or a note in the program or just help out on the day.

As always we would love to hear from local businesses whose support for our Foundation and Charity, as little or as large as it may be, all helps us to survive to the benefit of our fantastic local community. Please, if you are able to contribute in any way with either time or sponsorship, do get in touch with the club and contact us; we really do appreciate all the support we receive!

The club goes into the close season in a healthy position and hopefully we will finally receive approval for the additional land we so desperately need to accommodate our huge

What activities do teenagers do after school? If they’re not doing homework then there’s a good chance the activity will be sport or music related, potentially building on lessons from their earlier years. And these things all cost money - often lots of it! But what if your teenager isn’t interested in music or competitive in sport? What if you don’t want to or don’t have the money to fund these interests? What’s the alternative to sitting at home playing computer games, doing homework, or worse, hanging around on the street? One answer is youth clubs. At Spark we run an after school youth club during term time on a Monday and Thursday afternoon from 3.30-5.30pm. The Youth Club was started in October 2016 and is run in partnership with Essex County Council Youth Service. We are based in the Loughton Youth Centre on Borders Lane, next door to Murray Hall and we provide a safe and relaxed place for teenagers to come and meet friends, chat, laugh, play board games, cook, do arts & crafts, listen to music and get involved with whatever they fancy. There is no cost, no expectations or pressure to get involved with anything they don’t want to, but the opportunity and equipment is ready should they wish to get stuck into any activity on offer to them.

Spark is incredibly proud to have been awarded £1000 by Laura Rolfe, the current High Sheriff of Essex and Essex Community Foundation to help fund the running of the Youth Club. The High Sherriff is appointed to take an active part in supporting and promoting voluntary organisations and charities within the county and The High Sheriffs’ Fund was established in Essex in 1993 to reward community initiatives that address crime and anti-social behaviour.

Wanstead’s

Patchwork Gardens

There is much about Wanstead which makes it a special place, but its patchwork street gardens give it a particularly individual character and sparkle with unofficial looking plots of plantery. How did this come about? The story begins with the Corner House, positioned on the corner of Grove Park and for years housing the surgery of Dr. Corner, It has for many years housed the Age UK Activity Centre. Although it was renamed the Allan Burgess Centre most locals still know it as the Corner House! By 2003 the garden had deteriorated, so under the auspices of the Wanstead Society with whom we still have connections, we approached the council to see if we could adopt the garden. We’d already adopted some of the street flower beds but this move was the beginning of a very good relationship with our local council. “But why wouldn’t the council be happy for a community group to take over their work and save them money?” I can hear you say. Local minders can make a better job of maintaining flower beds than council contractors with no connection to the area, but the fact is that some councils aren’t happy with such community initiatives. Gardens are organic and change all the time. We, live here and pass them every day so can do whatever needs doing when it needs doing. The secret seems to be to be, to encourage locals to do their bit and never allow a bed to look neglected. When we took over the Corner House garden we removed rubbish and weeds then used compost and plants from our own gardens or had plants donated by interested passers-by.

We favoured old fashioned cottage garden plants as they come up every year, are hardy, need little watering and do not get eaten by snails. The garden changes week by week; 9ft tall hollyhocks are later joined by spires of verbascum (a native wild flower like a sort of primrose foxglove). The jewel in the crown has to be the cardoon with its enormous silver grey leaves and purple artichoke flowers alive with bumble bees in mid- summer. That’s another feature of our garden patches, they are alive with visiting insects and the many tall plants move gracefully in the breeze. From the start it was a community garden with warnings of vandalism in such an accessible place coming to nothing. After a post on The Wansteadium in 2014, a group met outside Wanstead Station to address the nine sorry patches surrounding the station. Our thinking was, “Why should commuters have to walk past these sad patches twice a day?” We were sure we could do better and did. Dead shrubs out, litter removed. Each patch is different in size and sunlight so we brought plants from our gardens that would fit the bill. It was a sheer delight to bring these dead patches to life. We took over the Fountain Beds around the old Victorian drinking fountain on George Green that same year. The council had removed the bricks, filled the beds with compost but nothing else. Eleven hours of expert gardening time and knowhow and the job was done. That first Christmas, we had to patrol the edges of these flower beds the night the Christmas tree was lit. The public weren’t aware of them and would have loved to have stood on the beds to get a better view. Now everyone’s aware of them they are a Wanstead favourite. Last year we adopted the sad beds by the service roads leading to the Wanstead Station and Grove Park car parks. How they have flourished! The Mansfield Road water tank

planters have been a great success and we’ve adopted the traffic roundabout opposite The George car park and the accompanying bed in between the two traffic lanes. We call that one the Cherry Pie bed as it’s opposite that intriguing plaque set in the wall of The George recording an incident in the eighteenth century concerning a cherry pie - It’s a quirky bit of Wanstead history! This year It looked like Wanstead was about to lose another favourite garden, the little one on the platform of Snaresbrook Station. We couldn’t take it on but have formed a new station gardening group, so that should continue to delight. We’ve come a long way since 2003 and have transformed over twenty former SPPSs (sad patches of public soil). As these are community spaces people tend to adopt nearby patches, keeping them litter free and watering in times of heat wavery. It helps that commuters empty their water bottles into the station patches on their way home. Small is great! Our philosophy if we have one is to adopt SPPSs that at least one hundred people walk past every day and to make them worth walking past. People often ask who funds us. Well, the Wanstead Society give us some funds and the rest comes from donations. Our most important resource is our volunteers. Local flower shops Heads ‘n Tails, Daisy and Lillies give us their “walking wounded”. We plant them and they dance. Our thanks to these local businesses, Wanstead benefits. If you like the idea of joining in the fun, why not get in touch with us? It’s a good way of becoming part of the community and of learning about gardening. We’re a friendly mixed group with a wide age range, no experience necessary and children are welcome. Our working parties are arranged to suit our volunteers. It’s so satisfying to take some ownership of our surroundings, to see it thrive and to know you had a part in it.

Creating a cosy haven

Regardless of the season, every home can benefit from adding some cosy comfort and we’ve got just the solution4

Creating a cosy haven

Whether you’re renting somewhere or just moved into a new pad, making your home feel personalised and cosy can be tricky. New builds are similar – how can somewhere feel your own when it looks exactly like next door? With these handy design tips you can make your house feel more like home this month. The first step to cosiness is personalisation. Make it a space that nobody wants to leave and a place that even guests feel at home in. Start by displaying family photos. From feature walls to lining them up on your sideboard, there are many ways in which to display your pictures making you feel at comfort and ease. Your furniture is the main factor in comfort and by choosing upholstered pieces such as a crushed velvet headboard, you’re adding a homely feel as well as oozing style. Using seating in the bedroom will give it a lounge like appeal, tempting you to curl up with a book and cup of tea. Match your upholstery with curtains or use worn leather for a casual but fashionable look. Accessorize with throws and cushions and you’ll have to tear yourself away. These can also be changed depending on the season – floral design for spring and woolly chequered for winter. The ultimate cosy accessory has to be faux fur, which is also bang on trend this year. People instantly relate the material with winter but used in the correct way and you

can have interior chic whatever the weather. A faux fur rug looks great in all seasons and cream faux fur cushions will also look inviting and bright. Similarly, it doesn’t have to be Christmas for you to incorporate alternative lighting into your home. Fairy lights look great placed in bedrooms, LED lights are perfect in the garden and corner lamps are the best way to create ambience. Layering rugs is also an alternative method to personalising your home and looks great. Use a large patterned print rug as the base and then throw a smaller, deeper rug on top – faux fur rugs work well in this format. Go overboard on soft textiles - it may be the most obvious option but it’s also the most effective. Your home should be an extension of your personality - whether you take inspiration from your travels, family history or frame your favourite art and quotes. Likewise, a collection is an easy way to add a personal touch to your home whether that’s glasses or jewellery. Finally, use scented candles and a diffuser to ensure your house smells inviting. A bright bunch of flowers is another cheap option to personalise and brighten up any space. You’ll be amazed at how these can turn any old property into a homely haven n

The Wanstead Society turns twenty in 2017 and during this time we have been involved with a number of community action days ranging from planting flowers to community picnics. In 2017 we’re focusing on events to improve the local environment across Wanstead and how you can help. In March this year I took part in the Great British Spring Clean on George Green organised by local residents. The aim was to litter pick the area, collect as much rubbish as possible and remove any harmful plastics that pose a danger to wildlife. Around thirty people took part over the two hours on a Saturday morning picking litter from Christ Church Green, George Green and the surrounding roads. It proved to be such a success that residents recently organised another on May 6th on George Green which turned out to be another great success! We are sure all the effort that was made will be noticed and will make a real difference to the community. At the end of March I took part in the event ‘Tidy Tarzy Wood’ (the section of Epping Forest by the War Memorial in Wanstead High Street). This event was organised by another set of local people in conjunction with the Epping Forest Rangers. The aim was to open up this underused part of the forest, remove litter and harmful plastics as well as invasive plant species that strangle the native forest. The Wanstead Society and its volunteers have also been involved with the new gardening group which took over the flower beds within Snaresbrook Station. Our objective is to ensure that neglected green spaces can add colour to the urban environment and we try, where possible, to use native flowers. This is vital if we are to protect endangered animals like the honey bee and even the humble sparrow which have declined in recent years due to habitat removal. In addition to this we also look after the flower beds by Wanstead Station. These are just a few examples of the commitment, determination and drive shown by local people in protecting their area. Whilst councils make cuts to essential services we see more and more local people prepared to step in to do what they can. It’s just one of the reasons why this area is such a popular place to live; community spirit. A great place to see this is at the long standing Wanstead Festival, planned for this year on Sunday 17th September which features a range of activities including community stalls, family activities, street entertainers, arts & crafts to name but a few. So, if you are thinking of moving to Wanstead, or are already a long standing resident, we hope to see you at one of our community action days soon – you would be welcomed with open arms!

Wanstead’s Historic parklands

Wanstead Park is a magical place; a work of both art and nature. Amongst its wood and lakes are earth mounds and terraces that were once part of a formal landscape. The Temple and the Grotto still remain, both follies of a bygone age, largely created in the Seventeenth Century. Its extensive avenues which stretched to Leytonstone and Wanstead, sentinels of a grand design, can still be found in part on the surrounding forest lands. In recent years The Friends of Wanstead Parklands (TFOWP) and the City of London Corporation have been working together to reveal the ancient landscape and make the park more accessible to the local communities and those from further afield. Thousands use the park, to walk their dogs, take their children out, picnic, bird watch, run, fish, exercise, relax; it’s an extensive list. TFOWP’s hold regular meetings, walks and events in the park with the aim of telling the story of Wanstead Park to its visitors, improving its facilities and recreating in places some of the atmosphere of the ancient gardens and park. Recent visitors to Wanstead Park will have noticed the critically low water levels in the lakes - the cascade that once formed the centrepiece in one of England’s most significant gardens. Sadly, the combination of a broken pump, a dry Spring

and invasive pennywort has meant that the lakes have had a very difficult time this year.

biggest problems: only the major capital injection offered by a lottery grant could do that.

The pump that fills one of the lakes has been broken for several months and engineers have just completed work replacing it with a new pump which is now pumping water into the lake again. Fish have transferred to another lake and will be returned once water levels return to normal. The other lake, the Ornamental Water, has critically low water levels because its water source is suffering from invasive pennywort and can therefore no longer provide its water. The City of London Corporation are assessing options for alternative sources of water for this lake.

We were concerned to learn recently that the City of London will yet again miss another deadline for putting forward a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). We are pleased to have the support of our local MP, John Cryer, who has agreed to host a ‘summit to save Wanstead Park’ to bring together the key bodies involved to hammer out outstanding problems and agree a timetable for the bid. We hope that this will provide, once and for all, a sustainable future for Wanstead Park.

For several years, Wanstead Park’s principal stakeholders have been working on a “Parkland Plan” to guide Wanstead Park’s regeneration and future management. This is in response to the decision in 2009 by English Heritage, now Historic England, to add the Grade II* listed park to its register of parks and gardens “At Risk” on account of its particular deep-seated problems and generally declining condition. The Parkland Plan was designed to form the basis of a potential bid to the HLF for a grant of up to £5m under the “Parks for People” programme. Piecemeal work will never be enough to deal with the park’s

Physio at yours - By Hannah Jackson

Physio at Yours are specialist Physiotherapists that offer assessment, treatment and rehabilitation in the comfort of your home. Extensive research indicates that receiving rehabilitation at home enables you to achieve your goals faster because they are more meaningful to you. A Physio also delivers better patient centered care and can solve problems more successfully in your own environment. I have had years of experience working in the NHS and I now work part time as a senior manager in a therapy department for a big NHS Trust, but I started offering private physiotherapy in 2012 after seeing how frustrated people got when they were waiting for a physiotherapist; in pain, weak and eager to get better. I know from experience that once people are discharged from hospital it’s common to experience difficulties, resulting in anxiety and the need for extra support. Also, in reality some people just cannot get to a clinic; whether this is because they are housebound or busy with work and family

life. With Physio at Yours there is no need to wait for a referral and no need to sit on a waiting list – you can be seen at a time and place convenient to you. Through my experience in the NHS I have developed excellent manual handling skills and a fantastic understanding of rehabilitation principles. I am able to support people through life changing events and help them to get as independent as possible, as quickly as possible. I have a huge passion for my job (I really love it!) and get the opportunity to build fantastic relationships with the people I work with. It’s so rewarding to know that your support, guidance (and quite often a lot of physical effort!) can help someone who has experienced huge physical trauma to take their first steps. I feel hugely proud of all my patients that despite traumatic car crashes, strokes or amputations, they are still able to get back into the gym with our support. Why wouldn’t I love my job? The job satisfaction is immense!

Physio at Yours have a team of physiotherapists working for us so we can offer help with a wide range of conditions. All of our physiotherapists are fully qualified with years of experience and NHS backgrounds. All of our employees are members of the Health Professionals Council and Chartered Society of Physiotherapists with full criminal record checks, ensuring you get friendly, well vetted, fully insured and competent, caring professionals! We cover most areas in London and Essex and are flexible with times convenient to you, so if you have any special requests – please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our ultimate goal is to get you as independent as possible, as quickly as possible

StreetsAhead Plumbing & Heating Ltd I started Streets ahead plumbing and heating ltd as I wanted to provide a professional service on a more personal level. I have created a local, family run business which aims to provide a friendly, honest service at a fair price. With a young family I know how hectic life can be so we do not charge a higher hourly rate at weekends. We also do not charge for call outs at any time. You can be reassured that you are in good hands as we are gas safe, city and guilds and fully insured. “Allan came and took a look at one of our radiators that was leaking. He explained the issue and his recommendations to me clearly and the price he quoted was brilliant. We agreed

to go ahead and less than 24hr after that initial quote the new radiator was fitted (I was very impressed with the quick service, no waiting around for days). Excellent service and communication skills! Would definitely recommend Allan for your plumbing needs.”

We offer a range of services including: Boiler installation | Boiler repair and servicing | Complete central heating installation | Landlord gas safety certificates | Power flushing | Unvented cylinders | Bathroom installation | Gas works | General plumbing
