Aerial Lift Evacuation from Cableway

Techniques for evacuation from aerial lifts differ significantly from one situation to another. Many factors play into the decision: the slope of the lift cable, the clearance above the chair, gondola or tram, the distances between towers, the number of passengers to evacuate, the recovery zone, among others. To be completed safely and in a timely manner, this operation requires regular training.

Left: Rescuer accessing the chair - Back-up belay may be done from the pylon. This allows for a mutual verification of the system before the rescuer moves onto the cable. The rescuer is under tension on the ROLLCAB, and the GRILLON is slightly slack to allow descent along the cable.

Right: Evacuating the passenger - The rescuer descends on the GRILLON to the chair, installs the PITAGOR harness on victim, then evacuates the victim with the I’D descender.

Technical Terrain Team Rescue

Ski Patrollers and First Responders may be required to respond to emergencies in technical terrain. These situations require difficult access and/or significant resources and training to accomplish in a timely and effective fashion. For greater safety, all maneuvers must be done on two independent rope systems. The rope rescue systems can be rigged in parallel (twin-tensioned systems) or separately (single-tensioned systems with main & belay line).

Top: Hauling with work rope and belay rope - All hauling and positioning forces are concentrated on the work rope. The belay rope is set up and kept taut enough to hold the load in the event of anchor or work rope failure.
Bottom: Hauling with twin tensioned lines - The two ropes have the same function and work in parallel: each rope supports half the load. A JAG SYSTEM can be used as an alternative method for hauling.

LIFT TOWER ACCESS & FALL PROTECTION

©Petzl, Roh

Petzl manufactures an entire line of personal protective equipment for lift maintenance technicians. Protect the workers who keep your resort’s lifts turning through both summer and winter operations.

Technical Tips

First Climb Method
Positioning with the GRILLON Lanyard
Partner Rescue with the JAG RESCUE KIT
Second Climb Method

First Climb Method

Ascending a tower via the ladder way normally requires a climber to progress using a cable or rail type permanent ladder fall protection system. However, many tower ladders don’t have a permanent system, thus a climber must protect themselves with a double-leg energy absorbing Y-lanyard or temporarily installed vertical lifeline.

VERTEX

Comfortable work-at-height helmet with 6-point webbing suspension

GRILLON

Adjustable lanyard for work positioning

ABSORBICA-Y

Double lanyard with integrated energy absorber, TIE-BACK version also available

Designed for use with two arms, the ABSORBICA-Y allows for continuous protection by detaching and re-attaching one arm at a time.

Second Climb Method

Using a vertical lifeline is a preferred method when climbing and descending structures because the fall protection solution doesn’t require any manual manipulation. The temporary lifeline system is trailed and installed by the first climber who ascends the structure using a double-leg Y-lanyard. Additional workers can now ascend/descend the structure using hands-free mobile fall arresters.

ASAP

Mobile fall arrester

ASAP’SORBER

Energy absorber for ASAP or ASAP LOCK, 20 cm and 40 cm versions available

RAY 11 MM

Static rope with sewn termination

In case of a slip or fall, the ASAP mobile fall arrester locks onto the RAY rope arresting the user and stopping the fall. The ASAP’SORBER provides energy absorption, and limits impact forces accordingly to the user’s weight and fall distance.

CONNEXION VARIO

Adjustable anchor strap with two forged steel attachment points

Positioning with the GRILLON Lanyard

Aerial lift tower work requires technicians to utilize different fall protection methods to ensure they are protected at all times. When accessing the cableway sheave train, a properly installed positioning lanyard along with a fall arrest lanyard will allow a technician to precisely & safely position themselves and be able to work with both hands free.

By pressing on the GRILLON’s pivoting cam, the length can be precisely adjusted for comfortable positioning when performing work on, or accessing, the lift tower. The ABSORBICA-Y serves as the user’s fall arrest system.

Partner Rescue with the JAG RESCUE KIT

If a fall occurs and the worker is left hanging in their harness and not able to self-rescue, the on-site work team has to respond immediately to access and move the casualty to safety. The rescue method should be as rapid as possible in order to reduce the risk of suspension trauma, especially if the casualty is unconscious.

Always ready to use for quick intervention, the JAG RESCUE KIT is designed to easily pick off and lower a victim. Its 4:1 mechanical advantage and excellent pulley efficiency allow the user’s effort to be multiplied by 4 when raising a victim.

BUILDING ACCESS & FALL PROTECTION

©Petzl, Roh

Petzl’s access & fall protection solutions are designed to protect workers during any work at height operations. From snow removal on sloped rooftops to building weatherproofing, maintenance, and construction, Petzl’s personal protective equipment is lightweight, comfortable, and compliant with North American regulatory requirements.

Technical Tips

ASAP Use on a Sloped Surface

Fall Protection & Self-Evacuation from MEWP

©Petzl, Roh

ASAP Use on a Sloped Surface

When technicians are working on a sloped surface, the risk of slipping or falling is increased. A safety device must be installed to guard against this hazard. The vertical lifeline system is connected to the harness’s dorsal D ring, but when a possible free fall is less than two feet, the system can be connected to the harness’s sternal D ring.

When working on a sloped surface, the ASAP offers the advantage of freely following the user, in both directions of movement.

Dorsal Attachment

Fall Protection & Self-Evacuation from MEWP

Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) are used extensively for resort operations; everything from electrical line clearing to building painting & maintenance. Because workers can be ejected from platforms when operating such equipment, it is critical they use a fall protection system, including an energy absorbing lanyard connected to an approved anchor point on the MEWP. If the MEWP becomes inoperable, workers can self-evacuate using the EXO AP personal escape system.
