Board of Directors Message

Moving Forward Through A Year of Challenges Philip Greenan Chairperson Board of Directors

2020

is a year we will remember our entire lives. While we started the year out hopeful that COVID would become less of an issue, it continued in fact to cast a huge shadow on the operations of the school throughout the school year. We faced many challenges, including: • Uncertainty as to whether new teachers could enter Japan; • The need for additional teachers to staff social-distancing requirements; • Intensive efforts to disinfect the campus; • New demands on teaching and learning for in-person, remote, and hybrid schedules; • Cancelled trips and activities; • Daily temperature checks for students; and • Students who tested positive for COVID.

6 ... Nishimachi Annual Report 2020-2021

The stress on students, parents, teachers, and administrators was off the scale, but with tremendous effort and good will, the school continued to move forward. The Nishimachi community rose to the challenge with singular communal spirit, engagement, and loyalty. Research into adding a high school division continued at a fever pitch last year. A particular site having been selected, deep analysis then took place to assess the feasibility of starting a high school in 2025-26. In June 2021, the disappointing conclusion was reached that due to a combination of financial and regulatory limitations, the designated site was not feasible. Armed with the lessons learned, we will continue exploration of the high school project, seeking the best outcome for the school. In the midst of this challenging year, members of the Nishimachi family have stepped forward, realizing that if there ever was a time to support our mission, the education of the whole student, it was now. Nishimachi’s culture of giving is evident by the ¥42.5 million raised through our Annual Giving program, while at the same time the

community generously supported the Matsukata House 100th Anniversary Campaign, giving over ¥69 million to the project last year. Exterior renovations are already completed on the Matsukata House, and plans for a school museum and interior renovations are on schedule for completion by June 2022. None of this would have happened without the remarkable commitment of an incredible team of volunteers, including the Tomo no Kai (Nishimachi’s parents association), the Nishimachi-Kai (alumni association), Outreach Scholarship events, the school trustees and board of directors, and many, many more. Thank you for your continued generosity and support. I thank you, the Nishimachi community, for your support during the unforgettable past year, and I ask and hope you will support the school going forward. We are made a better school because of you. A Year of Continued Growth

Admissions

2020-2021

was a year for Nishimachi International School that, despite the pandemic, was one of continued growth. Teachers, staff, students, and parents worked hard to maintain our program by keeping our safety and hygiene protocols front and center. We were fortunate in having very few COVID-19 cases, allowing us to remain in-person for most of our academic year. For many of our families and staff, the fact that children could engage in-person and learn together was a significant bright spot as borders remained closed for so many months. Although international travel was nearly impossible, the ability to see one another was an important element for many. In the spring of this year, with the Olympics on the horizon, the Japanese government accelerated its efforts, and many in our community were able to receive COVID-19 vaccinations as we headed into our summer break.

8 ... Nishimachi Annual Report 2020-2021

Despite restricting on-campus visits for parents and visitors, Nishimachi teachers were able to continue delivering an exceptional program for our students, and we have much to be thankful for.

Applications

Virtual Open Campus

The global pandemic had an impact on the number of families moving in and out of Tokyo, and, with borders closed, we were concerned about the number of new families who would be able to enter Japan for the 2020-21 school year. Several families were able to move, even though initially their plans were stalled during the pandemic. Thankfully, most of our current families chose to stay in Tokyo, allowing us to welcome them back for the 2020-21 school year; we also enrolled sixty-eight new families as well, from overseas and within Japan.

Among the many events that were new last year was our virtual open campus—the introduction of our school to prospective families. Through a Zoom webinar we shared our school’s approach and philosophy with over 150 interested families. It also included our students speaking about their lived experiences at Nishimachi, and additional videos online for a birds’ eye view of the campus. The positive outcomes of this creative approach included a larger number of attendees than usual at our traditional on-campus event and an ability to engage with overseas families who are just beginning their relocation plans. This was an extraordinary turnout and enabled real connections to be made with our students and school leaders.

Applications received during the previous year for 2020-21 remained healthy. Nishimachi received 190 kindergarten applications, which is higher than our five-year average of 133. For grades 1-9 we processed 168 applications, which was only two fewer than the 170 we received the previous year.

Enrollment Nishimachi began the 2020-21 school year with 464 students, 337 of whom were in the elementary division, and 127 in the middle school. This was a decline from 471 at the start of the previous school year, due to the factors outlined above. Nishimachi enrolled children from thirty-nine different nations, and 100 of our students were new to our program. Nishimachi Annual Report 2020-2021 ...

Educational Updates Nishimachi Learner Expectations

Service Learning

Round Square Candidate School

Living out our Nishimachi Learner Expectations (NLEs) and proactively following our school mission was a priority this school year.

Members of the Nishimachi community, students, faculty, and families, let their lives speak through their many service-learning projects. The best example of ongoing good practice related to Round Square (Environmentalism), our recycling project for bottle caps and paper and/or cardboard throughout the campus. Arrangements for pick-up are facilitated by middle school students, with assistance from teachers and staff. Additionally, grade 9 students created promotional materials encouraging our community to participate together.

We continue to develop our platform to build on global citizenship and service on campus by initiating and carrying out Round Square Ideals using the Round Square Discovery Framework.

• Making connections • Taking ownership • Acting ethically • Pursuing challenges • Being creative All of these were very relevant as we began our year in a pandemic. In the end, however, not only did we continue building momentum weaving the NLEs into every facet of our learning, but students also worked hard to live up to our mission of being learners and leaders in our community. While facing many challenges as a community throughout the pandemic, students and staff alike took ownership and pursued challenges head-on.

10 ... Nishimachi Annual Report 2020-2021

• Grade 4 made use of several resources from RS library during their study of refugees. • Grade 5 presented mini-lessons to model the Round Square IDEALS and Discoveries. • Grade 6 created: • A Random Acts of Kindness bulletin board for the entire community; • A Spirit of Environmentalism by planting tulips along the school entrances; and • A Focus on Internationalism, Leadership, and Service through book clubs, • Reading about social issues; • Producing an “Activist Action Plan”; and • Raising awareness/finding solutions for local and global social issues.

Japanese-Language Curriculum

CIS/ WASC Accreditation: Self-Study

Guiding Statements: Global Citizen

We completed the Japanese-language curriculum review, a process we follow with all subjects to ensure the latest research is incorporated into our content and teaching strategies. The results will start to be rolled out beginning in the 2021 school year. The core purpose of our Japanese-language and culture program remains the same—to help students gain the appropriate and sufficient skills for their level so they are able to apply them successfully in context and contribute to Japanese society. Students will be able to think independently, select and synthesize information, and communicate their thoughts, ideas, and opinions in Japanese. Based on the Common European Framework and that of MEXT, students will be grouped into basic, independent, and proficient subcategories.

In 2020-21, nearly half of our after-school meetings were devoted to preparing for reaccreditation by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), scheduled for fall 2021. This cycle of accreditation occurs every five years, and all staff, board members, and a group of dedicated parents helped us to reflect on our areas of strength and areas for improvement. A CIS survey was sent to the Nishimachi community, and we received a 77% response rate from our alumni and a 71% response rate from our parents. This is an exceptionally high response rate, of which we are very proud. Our extensive self-study report will be submitted early in the 2021-22 school year, followed by a visit from our accreditors in the fall of 2021.

We continue to reflect on our mission and guiding statements. This year, the Nishimachi leadership felt that we needed to address what it means to be a global citizen by adding a new guiding statement. Parents, teachers, business staff, and students worked together to create the following definition: “At Nishimachi, being a global citizen means understanding ourselves, embracing diversity, and taking action to create a peaceful and sustainable world.”

Program and Facilities Nishimachi Expansion: High School Division

Nishimachi Heritage

Summary

The Nishimachi Board of Directors and a number of community members researched and identified sites that would meet the needs of our students and their families. The steering committee created financial models, enrollment models, and preliminary program outlines and worked closely with regulators and other official agencies. Several sites were evaluated, including closed school sites, joint ventures, and private land for sale. The committee also engaged with parents to better understand the philanthropic interests of our community. Although a preliminary site was selected, the board determined that the target location would not be feasible and committed to reconsidering the expansion again in the 2021-22 school year.

This year, Matsukata House turned one hundred years old and was in need of significant repair. A campaign was started to raise funds to not only refurbish the exterior but to update the interior, including the addition of a dedicated archive/museum space. The outpouring of financial support from our community was instrumental in allowing us to begin this project ahead of schedule. Over the summer, the exterior was completely refurbished, and the interior project will be completed in the coming year. This is a full twelve months ahead of schedule. We have our community to thank for their commitment to our project

The 2020-21 school year was one that was full of surprises. Not only did we manage to stay open and in-person for much of our year, but we also managed to make it through a global pandemic intact. We have our teachers and staff to thank for their continued dedication and hard work, and for remaining mission aligned. While there is much work to be done, we look forward to completing our accreditation and moving on this year to develop a new strategic plan.

uring the 2020-21 school year, a heightened outpouring of support from Nishimachi’s generous community surpassed all expectations for the Matsukata House 100th Anniversary Campaign. Alongside capital campaign donors, Nishimachi continued to receive support from community members for our Annual Giving programs, which are so important to sustaining our program of excellence. Together, these appeals resulted in donations of ¥69 million for the restoration and renovation of the Matsukata House and ¥42.5 million of donations to the varied annual giving programs, including the Annual Fund, CCP, TNK Grants, and Outreach Scholarships. Your response sparked a growth in donations for the school

As we move forward, Nishimachi is committed to continuing this renewed culture of giving by identifying exceptional and ongoing programs needed to ensure our school’s continued success and appeal to your philanthropic interests.

The Matsukata House, Nishimachi campus landmark and anchor to generations of Nishimachi students, turned one hundred years old this year! We thank all of those who donated to preserve and renovate this historic Tokyo home and to help ensure that it continues as a welcoming portal for Nishimachi visitors for years to come. Alumni, alumni parents, current parents, faculty and staff, and former faculty raised over ¥69 million during the capital campaign, far exceeding our original goal. That amount will fund exterior renovations to the Matsukata House as well as renovations to the interior that will allow us to provide a warm and friendly environment for prospective families and visiting alumni. Additionally, visitors and students will be able to view the history of the school and the Matsukata family through an exhibition in a small museum area we are creating on the first floor. We are deeply grateful to the Nishimachi community for its generous donations in support of this iconic structure.

he Outreach Scholarship program, first launched in 2003-04, continued in the 2020-21 school year to support qualified candidates from various socioeconomic, racial, cultural, and geographic backgrounds. Through offering a limited number of partial scholarships, students at various grade levels have the opportunity to experience a Nishimachi education and contribute to the multicultural nature of our school community. These students, whose families might otherwise not be able to afford tuition for an international school education, fulfill the intent of the original Outreach Scholarship program, which was to expand diversity within our school community. Thank you to the many donors who offered support through the Outreach Walkathon and the Annual Fund. This year marked the first-ever virtual walkathon, thanks to COVID-19 social-distancing restrictions and Tokyo’s state of emergency, which was in place in late November. A total of 213

34 ... Nishimachi Annual Report 2020-2021

he Tomo no Kai (TNK) has, as with all in our community, been forced into change given the pandemic. We have been unable to conduct our two largest fundraisers (at least, in the traditional sense) for two years now, and we’ ve relied on Zoom to come together. But we have come together as a community, and we’ ve made the best of these trying times. As my predecessor Kaaren Kunze said, this past year could have been the year that everything fell apart. But we prevailed. Where we couldn’t raise funds with a live Food Fair, we did so by going virtual. Where we needed to supplement our income, we created Tomo no Kao, our online shop. Our fifteen incredible, parent-led committees performed brilliantly—COVID was no match to their volunteer spirit. Our Grants Committee funded every request that was made of TNK funds, and we contributed, as always, to the Outreach Scholarship fund. Our Community Services Committee not only carried out their regular activities but also made meaningful donations to two local charities that our students selected. Our Bookworms Club enhanced the joy of reading for our children through a myriad of events, and the Cross-Cultural Committee was absolutely amazing in finding innovative means of bringing their four, student-focused events to campus. Our Staff Appreciation

Committee carried out a most important role in offering gratitude to our wonderful educators, and the Parent Education Committee must have set a record for the number of phenomenal events that were put on offer. Many thanks to all! I am proud to report that TNK remains financially healthy and is ready to fulfill all monetary commitments during the new school year. We will continue to find new and innovative ways to raise money during these difficult times and cannot express enough how much the community and its support mean to us. We are deeply grateful to our sponsors for both our virtual Food Fair and upcoming Gala. We realize that many of these corporate and individual sponsors have faced headwinds, but their generosity has never flinched. We are grateful to you and pledge to always do what we can to give back to the community. Thank you very much. Sincerely,

ishimachi-Kai is the alumni association of Nishimachi International School, and its board plays an active role in the school community. The purpose of the Nishimachi-Kai board is to continue to support the school and ensure that current students and their parents can experience the same special educational and cultural opportunities earlier generations had during their time. Board members are invited to participate in, and support, various school activities, as well as organize events of their own during the school year. Nishimachi-Kai sponsors booths at the school’ s annual food fair in October and holds the alumni BBQ in June as its main fundraising activities. However, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, these events could not be held this past school year or needed tweaking to be hosted in a safe way. Having had to cancel the on-campus alumni 2020 June BBQ, we wanted to try and provide a special platform for everyone to get together this year, 2021. Therefore, the annual June reunion was held virtually, via Zoom. If there is a silver lining to the current situation, it is this: alumni living outside of Tokyo were able to participate in the reunion for the very first time. More than fifty people joined the virtual event from various parts of the world. We were delighted to welcome back alumni from every generation starting from the 1950s. In

addition to providing school updates, Nishimachi-Kai thanked the alumni community for its generous contributions and ongoing support of the Matsukata House 100th Anniversary campaign. Our events bring together all members of Nishimachi-Kai (alumni, parents of alumni, and former faculty and staff). We also do our best to reach out and strengthen our communication with the current school community in order to pass on the distinct school values we learned as students, as well as the unique and invaluable traditions of NIS some of us experienced first-hand during Miss Matsukata’s time. Our long-time culture of working together with compassion and empathy makes Nishimachi International School truly strong and special today. Kind regards,

Ways To Give, Ways To Grow

D

onating to Nishimachi is an investment in not only today’s students; it is an investment in generations to come as well. Nishimachi has been providing an outstanding education for international children for over seventy years. It is incumbent upon alumni and current families to ensure that it will continue today and in the future.

How to Make a Contribution

There are many ways you can support Nishimachi. Be assured that no gift is too small and every gift is equally recognized and appreciated. A gift from a family, when added to that of another, will make a larger contribution. You will aid Nishimachi immensely by participating and encouraging others to do so as well.
