Tennis! Good Or Bad?

LETTERS FROM THE EDITOR Dear readers, My journey as a writer wasn’t a pleasurable experience. I was never passionate about writing in my childhood. None of my past teachers open my eyes to write. They were pretty lazy. They told us what we had to write about and what the requirement for the essay was; then we were on our own. Most of the teachers that I had weren’t that harsh on grading my essays or research paper. I remember that I would half-assed most of my essays and I would receive a high grade. As long as I was on topic and gave sufficient evidence and reasoning they would give me a high grade. My average in writing would be a 3.5 out of 5 in high school.

Because of my dislike towards writing, I never really cared about my grammar. I would write the essay once and never reread it to look for mistakes. I hardly selfrevised my own paper nor have I asked other people to read my essays. I would be too embarrassed for my peers to revise my paper, because I know the lack of effort I put into my papers. Ultimately, my grammar has not improve due to my lack of care for my grade or my essay. However, I’m not the only one to blame. My previous teachers hardly fix my grammars on paper.

They would just give me a grade most of the time. This hinders my ability to develop my grammar skills because I am not being corrected by my teacher. Therefore, I can’t learn from my mistakes. So far in my recent writings in college is still similar to my high school writings. In my ethnographic essay and rhetoric essay I had many grammar errors. They were both my first two research paper that I had to do in UB. The skills that I used to write the paper was basically based off on previous education on writing. I was never constant with my past tense in my paper. I have done this mistake in my previous papers in high school. This problem arises because I don’t revise or re-read my own paper. Another problem that I encountered is the wording of my sentences. Some of them doesn’t make sense in my essays. The wording would sound awkward. This happens because I have not mapped out what I really want to say. I just think and write as I go. Additionally, I don’t give sufficient evidence and analysis in my body essay. I have a hard time relating it back to my thesis. It was hard for me to conclude a point I was trying to make in my body essay. I also have a hard time comparing it with a bigger problem in society. Some of

the examples I give, I haven’t made a point. My rhetorical did not improve because I was not able to revise it according to my professor’s comments.

In conclusion, my biggest problem in writing is grammar and providing sufficient analysis for my paper. This problem arises due to my lack of passion for writing and my teacher laziness of grading. In order to change and improve my style of writing I would need to take action to improve. I would have to let my peers read my papers and get their insights on my paper. I would also need to meet up with my teacher to get help on my paper. I would also need to give time to myself to revise my own paper. These action would most likely help me improve in writing.

TENNIS COMPETITION! GOOD OR BAD? When I played tennis, all I ever wanted to do was to have fun and win. I played on a team, and what I wanted for the team was them to be successful. I play tennis to make my team better. I came across UB Aces because tennis was my hobby. They play tennis at the Ellicott courts on UB. The thing that intrigues me the most is their personal purpose in playing with the UB Aces. UB Aces has people who like to play tennis for fun or competitively. This club is ran by students. This club started around 3 to 4 years ago. All the courts were filled with students playing tennis. Not a single person was standing still. In this club, there is a wide range of different races in this clubs. This club is like a smaller version of the melting pot that is in UB. Everybody respected each other in the club. Majority of them plays in a high level high school to college profession. In this tennis community, UB Aces, UB students socializes and play tennis at the same time. They meet three to four times a

week depending on the weather. The clubs goes to competitions with other colleges during the season, however only 20 members is able to attend. Does everybody want to be in competition? I believe that skills is involved when choosing students for the competition. Does it create tension between the groups who want to compete due to the limited amount of space? As I observed the club, I see groups forming. The females would usually play with the females and the males would usually play with the males. Some of the members would play competitively and some of the members would socialize while playing. Gender has an influence on these groups because males tend to be stronger and faster than women. In this club most of the males assume that women aren’t as good as the men in physical conditions. Meaning that, the males would like to play with males because they assume that guys are able to keep up or play better than the females. Naturally males would feel bad or feel

humiliated for defeating a female or losing to a female, respectively, in any physical sports. According to my observation, most males tend to play with other males. However, there is a couple of groups who have both male and female playing with or against each other. This shows that not all male tennis players disregard the value of a female tennis player. But, does it really matter if males and females play together? They can have fun and practice. There are also females who are better than guys. What happen if Serena Williams plays an average male college tennis player? Who would win? Would he still feel bad playing against Serena Williams? Still, gender separates the group from males and females in UB Aces. Maybe someday gender wouldn’t play such a role in tennis where students wouldn’t care much on gender physical appearance. If everyone played together they can learn from one another quickly and improve.

As I went around asking UB Aces member about why they were playing tennis at the Ellicott courts, I came across some interesting response. One member of the UB aces, named A, is a sophomore at UB. ME: Why do you come here to play tennis? A: I come here to play tennis because I want to beat my sister in tennis Me: Why do you want to beat your sister? A: Because she keeps making fun of me and saying that she can beat me anytime. With only the intention of beating his sister, this eliminate competition for students who want to compete and this affect the potential strength for the competitive play in tennis. Students who want to compete might be relieved because it increases their chances of being in the competition. Does this give them a reason to “slack off”? Since competition is eliminated they don’t have to worry about the one who isn’t interested. However, this affects the potential skill level for the competition team. This would incline the

members who wants to participate in the competition to not give it their best. Also potential players for the competition would be lost because some of the members aren’t interested in the competition. If other people played selfishly for themselves, people wouldn’t be joining the competition part of the team. They would only practice for their own personal reason. This decreases the amount of good potential players for the competition, possibly the amounts of wins in competitions. This also goes back to gender difference. A is a male and he loses to his sister in tennis. He wants to beat his sister because she keeps making fun of him. Does being made fun of by a female make him feel emasculated? Is that why he strives to be better than his sister. Or could it be the fact of being made fun of annoyed him so he wanted to stop it? In my opinion, it seem like he didn’t care about losing to his sister. It seem more like he wanted to defeat her more so he can “shut her up.” But, he could feel this way because she is family. He could feel entirely differently when a stranger female beats him. There are many factors can influence people to feel differently about

gender difference in sports. By forming these groups, socializing occurs in the group. However, socializing shouldn’t be the only reason why people go play tennis. It’s true that socializing is also a good way to relieve stress for some of the members. It also my get in the way of dedicated tennis members. Socializing can hinder the people who wants to improve. If a student sole purpose is to socialize, he wouldn’t be helping the people who are focusing on improving. That student would be a distraction. Students who take tennis seriously wouldn’t be able to focus if they keep socializing. This shows that there are people who dedicate their time to tennis. This would hinder the potential ability of the team. Most of the time their skills won’t be improved due to socializing. This can cause frequent mistakes in competitions and cost them the game.

Another member of the UB aces, B, loves tennis. I see him playing with all sorts of member in the club. He didn’t care about their skill level or how big the gap is between their skill levels. Me: How often do you play tennis? B: I play it whenever I can. Back in High school I used to play it for 6 Hours. Me: Wow you must love tennis. Do you play it for fun or competitively? B: I do both. I play tennis for fun, but when I can I like to challenge myself and play competitively. Me: Do you play tennis to relieve stress stressed? B: Yea, when it get toughs sometimes in school or work it helps me cool off from everything.

It seems that he doesn't care whom he plays tennis with. He plays it for fun and competitively. The officers would pair the people with similar skill level and examine them to see who is fit for the abroad competition. The members would notice that the officers are evaluating them so they would play seriously. It didn’t seem like the range of different skill level bothered him. He doesn’t feel like it’s easy or intimidated by his opponent. He treats them with respect and play to the potential skill that he has. He just wants to play tennis with someone, no matter how different their skills were. He didn’t care about their gender. He helps other learn how to play tennis better. He likes to improve while enjoying tennis at the same time. With his passion for tennis he should be able to learn more from others and help others. Does this make him a better tennis player? Does he play tennis for fame or for the love of tennis? There are some athletes in society that gets overwhelmed with popularity and starts playing for only popularity. However,

Kevin seem like the type of people who just loves to play tennis. In conclusion, it is interesting to see why people go play tennis. Sub-problems also arises in this such as gender separation in the club. It’s unfortunate that gender separation happens in most sports. Gender can affect the improvement of tennis skills because they have the potential to learn from others. The more people to learn from the better. Separate gender group forms because the UB aces members feel insecure about themselves when playing with a different gender. Also groups are formed with the same skill level and they tend to stick together while practice. This would slow down the improvement of the tennis team as a whole. However, there are some people who loves tennis who would learn and practice with different people. They would improve their skills dramatically because they’re learning from different people. Can you break the flow and play with a girl in sports?

LEAGUE OF LEGENDS IS BETTER THAN FINAL FANTASY! Welcome to the League of Legends! League of Legends is one of the most popular, awesome MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). They host professional tournaments for teams to compete across the globe. They make millions of dollars from the tournament. About 80 millions of gamers across the globe play this game. League is one of the top ten MMORPG games. There are several tactics, weapons, and champions to play from. The graphics of the game is always improving. The visual effects makes everything looks exhilarating. League of Legends should be the online game people play.

League of Legends may seem confusing and aggravating at first, but once you play enough you’ll get the hang of it. You have to memorize the weapons, the skills of each champions, and the way your teammates play. This can help you adapt to certain situations pertaining to the game. You have to familiarize the controls and adjust it to your interest. In my experience, League of Legends is one of the most enjoyable and intense games I ever played. You are able to play with friends and kill enemies with teamwork. There can be “come back” games; where it would seem like you are losing, but you and your team got your act together and started to prevail over the other team. That feeling is one of the best feeling. It feels like as if you are accomplishing a goal that can never be reached. What makes this game fun and challenging, is that you have to memorize the weapons and items. You get to customize your champions with the best optimal items and weapons. For example, if you have an attack

damage champion you would want to buy and use items that are for attack damage champions. An educated player of League of Legends would build according to how the other enemy team build their champions with items and weapons. There are three categories of weapons; one for physical damage champions, one for magic caster champions, and a universal consumables items for all champions. You can always switch up the roles of the champions due to your interest. This way you will never be bored. This makes the game more sophisticated and interesting because you can’t just build what you want; you have to build what is relevant for the champion you are playing and what the other enemy team is building. If you like to sacrifice yourself for the team then building your champion “tank” is the way to go. This means to make the champion act as a tank. It would have lots of health, armor, and/or magic resist. The main role of a tank is to make the other team waste their skills and time on trying to kill the tank. The tank is supposed to act like a wall for the respective team.

What is better than playing with by yourself? Is to play a 5 v 5 on League of Legends with your friends. Doesn’t everything seem more enjoyable when you’re doing something with your friend? You get to strategize with your team through chat and destroy their base. The exciting part of the game is killing minions while your opponent is in front of you. Minion gives you gold, and accumulative gold lead you with better items. You would have to make the best judgment on either getting gold or attacking your opponent. It is basically like you are dancing around each other to get the gold. You can synchronize your actions with other members of your team. For example you can give your teammates kills by letting them finishing off the champions you fought it down to its near death. This helps distribute money throughout the team because champion kills give a lot of gold. A bounty will keep piling up under your name if you are on a killing streak; this gives more bonus gold to whomever slain you. Basically the game is about reaching the objective first before the other team does. Getting gold would help them get better weapons and items. More gold, more

objectives, and more team cooperation would most likely result in a victory for the respective team. If you like the graphic from Final Fantasy then you’ll like the graphics from League of Legends. They have many visual effects that happens in the game. They have shadow effects, high number of pixels, etc… This makes the game look more realistic. In current society the better the graphics of a game, the better the game appeals to its consumers. The animation that each individual champions does impress the gamers. There are also special effects by specialized skins which makes their champions looks much cooler when utilizing it. If you are too lazy to check the status of your champion, it’s ok; they appear right on top of the champion. This is useful because this way you are able to calculate how much damage you would do to certain champions. The graphics of the game helps the game run smoothly and makes it more attracting for players to play.

They would have the building have a crumbling sounds. It is simulating the senses of nature. Each individual champions would have their own battle cries and death cries. They would also play intense music in the background to help fit the scene of battle between players. Most of the sounds the champions make is voiced by the employees of the game creators (Riot). They would take phrases from movies and implement them onto the champions. In conclusion, League of Legends is one of the most extraordinary games. There are many concepts in the game. Players can experiment with many items and weapons. The amount of skills required to play this games makes the game very addictive. Sophisticated games makes the games less boring and more interesting. I would recommend this game over Final Fantasy. Are you fit enough to master the champions and win against your opponent?

The sounds is very interesting. The map/environment have their own sounds.

I am going to analyze one short film of League of Legends. League of legends is a game known worldwide. About 32 million people around the world play this game. In this short film, there is a main character running through the battle field to save his friend. In the course of running through the battlefields he encounters many obstacles. I am interested in this text because I want to see why so many people play this game. This game is so serious that people play it professionally. What makes this game so popular? I think League of Legends is a good game because I played it before. The graphics are amazing. And the amount of characters you can use is awesome. There is so many different types of strategy to use. You have to study every character and items to know how to use them. The secluded people represents us, the players. The characters represent who we are controlling. This film tells us that this game is about fighting until one side wins. At the end for the final battle it showed that there were 5 character on each side. This mean that each team has 5 players. The film provides a clear concept of the gameplay for League of Legends. Comparing it to the game the only difference is that the game is an aerial view. The film, filmed it in a 1st person angle. The counter argument would be that the film does not provide a clear concept of the game play The film tells you how many people are able to play in the game. They show the different type of characters in action. Their actions are pretty similar to the game play. The battlefield is also similar to the game. It shows that the game has a big environment by having the main character run through the battle field. I intend to analyze the film by comparing it to the actual game. The message the film is trying to show is similar to the game play of League of Legends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mdgTR5ZyDs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aux_esZYhC4 Nike is filming an advertisement that is trying to sell cleats. In the advertisement they have two famous athletes starring in the ad. Rafael Nadal and Cristiano Ronaldo, tennis and soccer player respectively. It showed Cristiano Ronaldo playing tennis against Nadal with just using his feet. They are trying to prove that cleats can work in tennis as well. The ad is trying to target soccer athletes to buy this specific type of cleats.

Throughout the ad it is just playing intense music to flow with the two athlete’s competition. Music also helps the consumer to engage into the ad. It helps enhance the intensity of the match between two athletes. The intense music makes the scene more dramatic and intense. However it is unrealistic to play tennis with your feet. The amount of accuracy and speed you need to play tennis with your feet is unimaginable. They are trying to make people believe that they have the power to play tennis if they bought those cleats that the ad was trying to sell.

This ad is attracting people who are fans of Rafa and Cristiano http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mulAi7cno2Y Ronaldo. Basically, attracting people who are fans of tennis and This ad is showing Roger Federer playing tennis in his house. He is soccer, but mostly soccer players. They show how their cleats can practicing with his “coach.” The ad is trying to say that Federer is be used to play tennis. It has this false connotation where soccer always ready for tennis. He’ll play tennis anywhere and anytime. players can be as fast as a tennis ball and hit it accurately back to This ad targets tennis players. It try to motivate other tennis player the opposing player. This ad is trying to say that these cleats can be to work hard in tennis. It shows how intense he is playing against used with any sports. Also, it gives the message that you’ll win in his coach. I like this style because it has a comedic value to it. They every sport. By showing famous athletes wearing the cleats, it are playing tennis inside a house. I can talk about the style, the sends a message that the consumers will be as athletic as famous music and Roger for the assignment. They are trying to promote athletes. The tone of the ad is intense. They are showing both other tennis players. This symbolizes the slogan “just do it” athletes playing tennis seriously. The intensity gives excitement to because roger is playing tennis. It might want others to play tennis the consumers. Which engages the consumers into the ad more. more because of inspirational the video can be. This ad does not use speech or text. It just uses action throughout the whole ad. It just showed the Nike symbol at the end to show which company was sponsoring the ad.

George Lopez has a show about George being offended by a Mexican statue on a neighbor's lawn. In the show, the statute is interpreted by how Mexican sleeps on their jobs. In reality, there is a stereotype that Mexicans are viewed as lazy workers. George is offended by the statue. They think the neighbor is racist against Mexicans. In reality it’s just a harmless statue. The neighbor offence was that it was just for decoration. George was over exaggerating his offence with the statue. In the episode, they show that they were planning to smash the statue however they ended up sleeping before doing it. The job was to smash the statue, so this resembles the stereotype that Mexicans are sleeping on the job. They made the message of the stereotype in a comedic way by making George and his mom sleeping before the smashing of the statue. They realized that the stereotype was true however, George covered it up in a comedic way. Sometimes they would refute the idea of a stereotype by involving themselves and over exaggerate it. For example, they were accused of something, but they said that they didn't do it because they were “lazy”. They also involved other stereotypes. Such as, unintelligent Mexicans. Max, the son, shows that he’s dyslexic which proves the stereotype of being dumb. However, we know in reality that not all Mexicans are dumb. Max happens to have a learning disability. In conclusion, the episode shows example of stereotypes that happened to George and his family. The show is trying to say that there are some Mexicans that fall under these stereotypes but not all. They show these stereotype in a negative, comedic way because the family didn’t accept the stereotype but they get themselves involved in the stereotype to prove a point.
