Introduction

W

elcome to the 21st Pf Awards Brochure. As you know, we presented the Pf Awards virtually last year and I was hopeful, like many people, that it was going to be a one off and we would be live this year, looking back and talking about Covid-19 in the past tense. Alas, that was not the case. Last April, I sat in my home office considering Pf Awards 2021 and for one fleeting second, I thought will there even be an Awards next year? Those of you who know me well, know that I am passionate about Pf Awards and I very much had the mentality of the show must go on. By this time, I’d received calls and emails about managers doing an outstanding job motivating their teams, collaborations happening across industry and the NHS and very innovative ways of working coming out of extreme difficulty. It made me reflect that maybe there wouldn’t be a place for the traditional Pf Awards but there were still achievements to celebrate. We needed to adapt with the pandemic in the same way that everyone else had. We explored what new categories might look like, how they reflected what’s happening, what the industry had been achieving and in June, I nervously presented the new categories to the Pf Awards Steering Group. I didn’t really know how the industry would feel about recognising and celebrating at this time. I was overwhelmed with the positivity and enthusiasm from everyone, so we kick started our plans two months behind schedule. From June to the closing date in January, a lot had happened in the world so we weren’t sure how many entries we would receive. The closing date arrived and, again I will use the word overwhelmed, because the number of entries and standard of entries was superb.

Every year I say Pf Awards wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors and that is so true. This is especially true this year, when I know that companies are facing incredible pressures. I cannot thank you enough. Some of you have supported us for 21 years and, for that, I am grateful. I want to now turn to the Assessment Day. It is thanks to our fantastic group of independent judges that this becomes a reality. They are a wonderful mix of former industry professionals and clinicians who give up their valuable time to ensure that the candidates are rigorously put through their paces. All of the judges adapted amazingly this year for the Virtual Assessment Day. I have to say I did miss seeing you all face to face though. And that leads me nicely onto our candidates. This year, above any other, the judging panel remarked on the capability of the individuals and teams they witnessed at the Assessment Day – so thank you for taking the time to enter and showcase your fantastic work in the face of incredible difficulty. Please enjoy our special Pf Awards Brochure and read about our fantastic winners who will now become part of our exclusive Pf Awards Winners Club. Looking forward, I will wholeheartedly say that I hope Pf Awards 2022 can be a live event and we all get to see each other in person next year. Behind the scenes, we will be aiming for that, but this will be entirely dependent on us all being safe and well and out of lockdown. We will be monitoring the Covid-19 situation and updating you as soon as we can but whatever the outcome, I am extremely proud of that fact that the Pf Awards just keep on getting bigger and better. Take care and stay safe,

Winning the Pf Award for Innovation in Education was a huge honour and a very proud moment for myself and Chris. Mental wellness is a subject that I am hugely passionate about – by opening up the conversation and raising awareness of this subject, we aim to thrive as a team and become the best version of ourselves. We are continuing this important journey together and believe it will serve as a catalyst for our individual and collective success. I am delighted and proud to have had the opportunity and platform to have developed and delivered such an important initiative and we are excited for the future of wellness, here at Astellas and across the industry, and will continue to share our successes and learn with others along the way.

On behalf of the UCB MSL team, I was really pleased that our passion for the project was so evident. We are committed to improving patient lives through our interactions with our external stakeholders and I feel that this project perfectly highlights this commitment.

To win the Outstanding Individual Award was the icing on the cake and has left me full of confidence that I can deliver a real impact in this exciting and fast-moving industry.

OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE AWARD David Kidd, Thornton and Ross Pharmaceuticals FROM THE SPONSOR

“As a long-time supporter and sponsor of the Pf Awards, this year was particularly special for us as it was the first time we have sponsored since the launch of our newly formed company, Viatris (formed from the combination of Mylan and Upjohn). This last year has presented challenges in many industries and none more so than in healthcare. We have seen our NHS overwhelmed at the peak of the pandemic, along with an outpouring of support from people proud of what the NHS is all about. Healthcare has never been as important as it is today and the role the pharmaceutical industry plays is a vital one. Sponsoring the category of Outstanding Individual Performance was an intentional decision because we truly saw it as a distinct award that really does recognise the best of the best. We are very proud of David’s achievements to win so many different categories and to find out that this was the first time he entered the Awards makes his achievement all the more outstanding. He is the perfect example of an overall winner. We send our warm congratulations to all of the finalists and our special congratulations goes to David; a worthy winner of the Pf Outstanding Individual Performance Award 2021!” Alistair Donnachie, Commercial Excellence Manager, Viatris 32 | Pf Awards Brochure 2021

THE ROLE OF A Pf AWARDS COORDINATOR What does it entail? INTERVIEW BY Emma Cooper

T

hroughout the process of the Pf Awards, the coordinator plays a crucial role. The coordinator represents their company as a whole and is the main point of contact between candidates and the Pf Awards team. So, what does it take to be the best at the role? Here, Karen Hawes, PA to Director, Market Access and Head of UK Corporate Affairs, Novartis, shares her experience.

What is the most challenging part of the role? There can always be challenges when managing other people’s expectations for a project or timeline. The way in which one person likes to be communicated with can be totally different to another. It requires finding a medium to ensure you get the right messages across to them at the right time so they don’t lose sight of anything and the project is completed on time.

The coordinator role is a crucial one; how did you feel about being nominated by your company? This year was the fourth year I have acted as a coordinator for the Pf Awards. Looking back to the first year, it was a little daunting as I didn’t really know what to expect and I took the responsibility of coordinating such a project very seriously. I am so glad I was given the opportunity. It allowed me to liaise with colleagues around the country that I wouldn’t generally have to do in my day-to-day role. It is a great way of having more insight into what the different areas of the business do.

What is the most rewarding part of the role? I coordinate receipt and submission of the entry forms and personally take the time to read through them all. It reaffirms that I am very proud of the associates I work with, along with the company I work for.

What attributes do you feel you have that suited you to the role? If I had to pick out two key attributes that suited me to the role, I would pick resilience and communication. There is a lot of coordination that goes into this project and although you have set timelines, there can often be unexpected challenges to manage. You need to ensure you support people to overcome these challenges and communicate to all parties to keep them aligned. What did you enjoy most about being a Pf Awards coordinator? I get totally caught up in the excitement of it all from start to finish. I find that the associates who are nominated are always very humble and thrilled to be put forward for such a prestigious Award. I always sense this reaction from them and I honestly enjoy supporting them through the process.

I watched eagerly, like a proud parent, as the Pf Awards evening took place

How did it feel to represent your company and be the link between Novartis and the Pf Awards team throughout the process? I have never really thought about it and it is something that has seemed to come quite naturally to me. I think it is because the synergy from the Pf Awards team is very streamlined and they are always there to answer any questions and support me. Coordinators have a unique view into the Pf Awards. Why do you think they have become such a prestigious event? The Pf Awards are very well coordinated by E4H, bringing companies in the industry together to celebrate their top performers. A lot of thought goes into the Pf Awards and categories behind the scenes, for example this year the categories were changed to reflect the Covid-19 pandemic, and I believe that this is what has made the Pf Awards such a prestigious event. Was it more challenging being the coordinator at the Virtual Pf Awards 2020 compared to previous years? I personally didn’t find it any more challenging coordinating the Pf Awards from home this year compared with previous years. As the associates nominated are mainly field based staff, the communication process was the same. Of course, it is a shame not to see everyone in person and congratulate them face to face at the Pf Awards Dinner! How did you celebrate on the evening of the Pf Awards Virtual Dinner? I watched eagerly, like a proud parent, as the Pf Awards evening took place. We used Microsoft Teams to communicate internally and the energy from everyone was amazing. This was followed by a glass of vino and a takeaway!

A WORD FROM THE JUDGES INTERVIEWS BY Emma Cooper

David Clarke, Director at Ethical Reach Ltd What was the atmosphere like on the Pf Awards Virtual Assessment Day? What a great level of excitement and ‘buzz’ that surrounded the Pf Awards Assessment Day. It was truly exciting and motivating as an assessor to see the energy each and every candidate had. The passion coming through for helping patients through imparting the science behind each and every product was tremendous. What makes a candidate stand out to you? Those candidates that naturally go above and beyond to empathize with their customers and to do it naturally makes them stand out from the crowd. Preempting issues before they occur to make the whole process as professional as possible. How do you feel the candidates embraced the new Pf Awards categories? This year candidates went above and beyond previous years, it was almost ‘in the face of adversity (Covid-19) they were super charged’. What is it about Pf Awards that makes you want to return as a judge year after year? I am already looking forward to Pf Awards 2022 as each year I think it cannot get better, but then it does. How are Pf Awards viewed by the industry? The Pf Awards are truly seen as the benchmark against which to set your expectations. Delivering excellence and professionalism in heaps. Kathryn Hallett, Director of Learning, Excel Communications What was the atmosphere like on the Pf Awards Virtual Assessment Day? There was a real buzz on Pf Awards Assessment Day! It was fantastic to see so many new and familiar faces at the judges briefing before we started the day. Even virtually, the excitement was tangible. What makes a candidate stand out to you? What makes a candidate stand out to me, above all, is passion. If they demonstrate a passion for their end patients, clinicians, products and their role, well, they automatically get high scores from me. How do you feel the candidates embraced the new Pf Awards categories? I feel the candidates embraced the new categories really well. I loved the split between team and organisational recognition for different initiatives, which really gives a range of candidates more visibility. In your opinion, how do you feel the new categories gave candidates the opportunity to demonstrate what they had achieved over the last year? I can only speak here for my category which was Innovation in Education (Team), and I really feel it gave the candidates a chance to show off a diverse array of innovative projects they had invested in and had to adapt over the last year. Some candidates’ projects were born out of necessity, some were actually helped by the exponential growth in technical skill of their teams due to lockdown. It was really inspirational to see.

3 8 | Pf Awards Brochure 2021

What is it about Pf Awards that makes you want to return as a judge year after year? For me, it’s all about how the pharmaceutical industry is really connecting to patient journeys, and really focusing on improving lives. It is a joy to see the passion the candidates have for their part in that journey, and that’s what makes me want to return year after year. How are Pf Awards viewed by the industry? Working in the pharmaceutical industry, I can tell you first-hand how the Awards help motivate individuals, teams, and organisations to do better. A certain amount of healthy competition is a real positive as it drives ambition for the industry, and the Pf Awards do this so well! Was it a good move including teams and company entries for this year too? Yes – this allowed the diversity of the smaller and larger scale projects to gain visibility at the Awards! Kaye Hallett, Clinical Development Consultant What was the atmosphere like on the Pf Awards Virtual Assessment Day? I was little apprehensive to start, not knowing who I was judging with or how the technology would work. Once I met my fellow judges and Dom from the Pf Awards team had put us at our ease with the tech, we all immediately ‘clicked’ and were able to divvy up tasks to ensure we worked well as a team. We all enthusiastically jumped into the task in hand, learned a lot, met some fab people and had some fun in our discussions. It was such a well-balanced group of judges from diverse backgrounds, different personalities and all female! We all want to do it again together! What makes a candidate stand out to you? A good all-rounder – a well thought through ‘pitch’ supported by evidence, engaging and impactful presenting, authenticity and infectious enthusiasm. How do you feel the candidates embraced the new Pf Awards categories? Really well – some great examples of collaboration and leadership. They were much better able to relate the categories to real life scenarios and link to their impact. Some of them had some amazing testimonials which were a testament to their skills. In your opinion, how do you feel the new categories gave candidates the opportunity to demonstrate what they had achieved over the last year? I think it was a great opportunity. The winner of the Outstanding Collaboration With The NHS category left us totally speechless and literally all in tears – in a very positive way! This was a fabulous example of a real-life project which had to be set up in a new way, in record time, with the need to save lives in the Covid pandemic. Having worked in clinical research for over 30 years, it was amazing to hear how the team had worked together in a very different way across all boundaries – pharma, regulators and NHS, to set up and deliver Covid trials in record time. The passion and enthusiasm left us in awe and, of course, we could really relate to the impact made on available treatments.

What is it about Pf Awards that makes you want to return as a judge year after year? I want to keep learning and stay current with what is going on. It’s a great thing! How are Pf Awards viewed by the industry? In a positive way – I wish more companies got involved and looked at it with a broader perspective. For example, it was good to see a research project this year rather than totally commercially focused projects. Was it a good move including teams and company entries for this year too? Definitely, as it focusses very much on working across boundaries and specialties which is increasingly important in this world.

MORE FROM THE JUDGES... Anne Ballard, Anne Ballard Associates “In a year of significant challenges, it was fantastic to see the creative collaborative approaches that candidates had undertaken which genuinely added to the customer and patient experience. The variety and breadth of collaborative initiatives seen in this category highlighted the quality and creativity of the candidates selected.” Ian Robinson, Managing Director, Pharmability Consulting and Future CX “The ability of the people in our industry to adapt and continue to meet the needs of customers and their patients is truly impressive. The Collaboration Award highlighted the diverse nature of prevailing patient needs and the different, innovative ways in which brilliant people can add value beyond their brand when they seek to develop and leverage true customer insight.” Dr. Yashmi Jogessar, Pharmaceutical Physician, Code and Compliance Trainer, Director Compcheq Ltd “In the year of coronavirus, ‘necessity being the mother of invention,’ drove every single human being on this planet to adapt and find new ways of simply living. 2020 will possibly stand out in history as the time when, with pure life-saving innovation, pharma rose like a phoenix, the most super of all super-heroes. That spirit of drive and innovation, no less showcased by the entrants, nominees, Award winners and particularly the Pf Awards organisers! Amazing contributions and efforts…congratulations and well done all!”

Nic Hallett, Managing Director, Excel Communications “The Pf Awards is a UK healthcare institution that I have loved supporting for the last 20 years. I get to meet the brightest and the best managers, trainers and, of course, sales people from across the industry. This year’s virtual format was brilliantly slick and efficient. The judges and competitors worked from the comfort of their homes and yet the interviews, presentations and sales calls were every bit as authentic as the face-to-face experience.” Lucy O’Neill, Chief Culture Officer, Star OUTiCO “It was a real privilege to judge the Most Responsive Company category in the 2021 Pf Awards. With fellow judges coming from the NHS and Public Health England, the three different lenses gave a real 360 view on how nine different companies responded to the unique challenges of ‘the year that took us all to new places’.” Helen Bessell, Leadership Consultant and Executive Coach, SERIOUS Leadership “Being part of the judging panel for the Pf Awards is always inspiring and energising and a privilege to be part of every year. Being in the company of established and emerging talent with a shared goal and purpose of driving excellence across the pharmaceutical industry is an absolute joy.” Adrian Frantom, Commercial Director, Production Bureau Ltd “Pleased to be involved in the judging for the Pf Awards, as it is a mutual learning experience. Every day is a school day and judging the Pf Awards is no different.” Colin Irving, Project/Study Manager, Bionical Solutions “What really makes it worthwhile for a judge is the quality of the candidates and the level of preparation, commitment, and most of all enthusiasm they all bring to the Assessment Day. As a judge in the OmniChannel Sales Professional, which is something close to my heart, it was fantastic to see different approaches and styles. Well done everyone.” Phil Shaffner, Project Manager, CHASE “I have been in the industry for 21 years and what I enjoy about being a judge is seeing how individuals have evolved over the years. A salesperson has had to adapt to the ever-changing customer requirements and changing NHS. The need to sell virtually, as well as face-to-face, has never been more important and the standard this year was fantastic, which is a credit to the individuals and the companies they work for.”

Allan Mackintosh, Lead Coach, Partners Team Development. “It was a great privilege to be on the Pf Awards judging panel this year and it was great to see the effort that was put into the Outstanding Teamwork category entries. With some real examples of great teamwork, it was refreshing to see the level of exceptional talent that exists within the UK Pharmaceutical industry.”

Mehrnaz Campbell, Founder of Cheemia Limited “Being a judge at the Pf Awards, which is a hub for networking and sharing best practices and a centre for defining excellence, was a special treat and a privilege for me.  The new Pf Awards categories reflected the new challenges in online marketing, sales and education in our industry. Being a finalist in the Pf Awards confirms excellence in practice and the Pf Winners are the best amongst an elite group of high performers.”

Beth Stacey, Vice President, NeoOptima “The Pf Awards are a fantastic opportunity to support the pharmaceutical industry to continue its development and added value to clinicians in the evolving NHS. I was delighted to be asked to judge again at this year’s Awards, and to observe the future of our wonderful industry. Helping to identify, prepare and win at every critical moment.”

Kathryn Hallett, Director of Learning, Excel Communications “The level of candidates in 2021 impressed me so much more than in a ‘normal’ year. The resilience of the individuals, teams and organisations, their efforts to support each other and the NHS, and all in a year of such turmoil was really outstanding. It is a privilege to be involved in the Pf Awards year after year, and I count myself lucky to be part of such a force for good.”
