Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016

Introduction O

ver the 16 years that I have been running Pf Awards we have seen some remarkable changes in our industry. Everyone at the Pf Awards dinner played an important part in how we educate healthcare professionals about medicines and medical devices which makes a difference to patients every single day. With the support of our steering group and sponsors we want to ensure that Pf Awards continues to reflect the roles that the industry feels should be recognised as the key roles in our industry.

Firstly the sponsor companies, who I’m greatly appreciative of, some companies have supported us for several years and some are very new to Pf Awards. The second group of people are our independent Judging Panel, again some of our judges have assessed for many years and some are quite new too, I really do appreciate their hard work and enthusiasm for Pf Awards, thank you. We are looking forward to Pf Awards 2017, the planning and preparation has already started. We are really excited about our new branding for Pf Awards and will be sharing this with you shortly.

Every year I recognise two groups of people who MELANIE HAMER without their support Pf Awards wouldn’t happen. Founding Director, Events 4 Healthcare Ltd Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016

EMPLOYER OF CHOICE

[COMPANY PROFILE]

That’s the spirit! In order to select the right career path you need to get the best training.

A

lmost half a century ago Sir Alf Ramsey created a football team that, for the only time in England’s tumultuous history, lifted the World Cup. Their success was due to the manager’s ability to recognise that very different players could combine to achieve consistently excellent results. Indeed, they combined to reach a common goal – quite literally. In many ways Excel Communications has summoned up the spirit of ’66, by offering a number of tailored packages, which will give individuals the best possible chance of succeeding in their chosen position. Excel Communications was created from, and for, the pharmaceutical industry, and the partnership has subsequently flourished, changed and innovated for three decades. From ‘Group Selling Skills’ for representatives, to ‘Leadership Development’ for managers, Excel Communications has worked with most of the major

pharmaceutical companies in the past 30 years. Team work Striving to add greater value to clients, Excel launched ‘The Excel Academy’ in 2007, a specialist healthcare division providing communications training for healthcare professionals (HCPs) - working closely with the pharmaceutical industry on Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and Customer Engagement projects. In 2010 ‘Excel Enterprise’ was launched, a team dedicated to bespoke training for sales professionals and management, and in 2015 Excel Communications celebrated its 30th birthday by launching ‘Excel SciMed’ - highly tailored learning and development for pharmaceutical medical and scientific professionals. In 2016, what many training managers would call the ‘Holy Grail of training’, Excel

Communications has proudly launched ‘Excel Evaluate’ – a unique, online system for measuring the return on investment (ROI) from training using the Kirkpatrick level 3 Training Evaluation Model. Go to excel-communications

The Excel Academy Specialising in communication and leadership skills training for HCPs, The Excel Academy has trained thousands of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and healthcare managers on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. From presentation skills for KOLs to leadership programmes for Specialist Registrars, The Excel Academy helps companies provide innovative training opportunities that help HCPs develop their leadership and communication skills and improve patient services.

Excel SciMed Both Field Medical and Medical Affairs roles have grown in recent years and have very specialist needs; communicating technical data to colleagues, customers and patients, being informative and non-promotional. Excel SciMed focuses on highly tailored learning and development for pharmaceutical medical and scientific professionals. No one knows more about training these highly qualified experts, and Excel SciMed brings you all our expertise, in one place.

Excel Enterprise Excel Enterprise was created in recognition of the value that we provide to clients in the sales arena. We help clients’ sales teams and managers to deliver optimum results through tailored, practical and targeted training programmes. For local, international or global teams, our network of world-class sales trainers deliver high impact training in any one of a dozen languages. Backed up by our professional client services team and dedicated account management, you can rely on us to deliver high value and exceptional results.

Excel Evaluate An evaluation tool that quickly and simply allows you to assess people’s performance or assess changes in behaviour as a result of training or coaching; Kirkpatrick’s level 3 evaluation of behaviour compares people’s actions against the ideal. Behaviours are indicative of future results and Excel Evaluate measures these, either as a snapshot or over a period of time. By tailoring the behavioural indicators to reflect your goals you can evaluate the impact of a specific training event, incentive scheme or mentoring programme on people’s performance.

The Judges “Sitting as a judge on the Pf Awards for the first time was a privilege especially as I was judging the ‘Emerging Talent’ category. Across a number of field based roles it was a pleasure to see how the candidates were passionate about working in our industry and the difference we can make to patients lives. This coupled with a sound grasp of business principles and excellent account management was resulting in some amazing success stories. Also evident was innovative thinking and the clear development of digital solutions to aid effective business development. All the candidates on the day were able to shine a light both on themselves and their company, and I would encourage anyone with a good story to tell to enter next years awards.

ANNE BALLARD Director, Anne Ballard Associates

“As a first time judge I was immediately impressed with the professional approach and exceptional organisation of the assessment day. The calibre of the candidates was excellent so vigilant judging was imperative. It was great to see such enthusiasm and knowledge of the market and healthcare systems from the candidates. After 28 years in Healthcare it is encouraging to see the motivation of the industry continue to improve year-on-year. I was particularly interested to hear about innovative initiatives developed by the teams to meet the changing needs and challenges of customers, healthcare and ultimately their clients. A truly vibrant and energetic day from start to finish.”

WENDY BOLAM Business Director, SG Consulting Solutions Ltd Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016

A word from

The Winners Primary Care Specialist Award Kristine Stanhope-Campbell, Bayer plc “Winning The Primary Care Specialist Award 2016 was an AMAZING experience! As difficult as it is for me to be speechless, I can honestly say – I was!!! I just couldn’t believe I had won it! From the initial stage at the start of the year with my submission of three “Best Practice/Outcome” examples scrutinised, allowing me to sail through to the next stage– the assessment day in Leicester. A challenging, high paced and very thorough day – I really felt I had been tested to the limit! That business exercise for an hour, under exam conditions, then straight into a group presentation with questions then just a half hour window until my sales call! It was tough, but enjoyable. Looking back I think I just knuckled down and did what I do everyday in Glasgow, working in primary care! Then a week later at The Pf Awards ceremony, I was delighted to see my name up in lights as a finalist for my category. I was however completely shocked when my picture and name stayed there as The Winner! The Bayer Team on the night were amazing too! Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016

They really were very encouraging, cheered me up onto the stage and later helped me celebrate in style with other Bayer colleagues who were also recognised for their achievements. It was a fantastic experience and one which will be hard to forget!” Clinical Nursing Award Dominique Muir, Quintiles Ltd This was the second time I have entered the Pf Awards, I was very happy last year to be named as a finalist so when I was nominated to enter again this year I was pleased to be given another chance. On the assessment day there was the opportunity to meet and spend time with other candidates from within Quintiles and other companies. The assessment process had changed this year which meant there was no real advantage from having done it last year. This year we had to do two presentations which gave me the opportunity to showcase the role of the Nurse Adviser whilst also highlighting the benefits I bring to both the patients I see and the NHS. The awards ceremony was a lovely evening and was a just reward for the

hard work and commitment given to preparing, submitting my entry and in attending the assessment centre. When my category was announced I felt a sense of anticipation with a few butterflies in my stomach. The top six candidates were read out and I was again delighted to be among them, when the winners name was then announced I was even more delighted and shocked to hear my name, it was a very surreal feeling to go up on stage and receive my award from Gethin Jones. I felt incredibly proud and it was an amazing feeling to be congratulated by all my colleagues. So my advice would be that if your manager approaches you next year to ask you to enter then go for it, yes it is hard work and a little nerve racking but I would never have imagined I could win which I wouldn’t if I hadn’t taken the opportunity when it was offered. Medical Scientific Liaison Award George Psaroudakis, Bayer plc “Well I wasn’t expecting that..! What made winning this award such an amazing experience, was that this was the first year that the MSLs were recognised at the Pf Awards but also the high quality of the “competition” and the expert judging panel. MSLs are often the “unsung heroes” within a pharma organisation so it’s very encouraging that Pf has included our function in this new awards category. I think it’s the best job role in the industry and it’s great to see it appreciated!

It was a brilliant highlight in my career and I am grateful to have received such positive feedback from my colleagues within medical affairs but also from the commercial side of Bayer too. The assessment day was very challenging but enjoyable and the awards ceremony was a night to remember. Many thanks to my manager Nada Mason and congratulations to all the other Pf Awards nominees and winners from Bayer and the other companies. Overall, a fantastic and unforgettable experience!” Sales Team Award Myles Hall and Sam Strong, Forte UK To be nominated was fantastic. To be a finalist was amazing. And to win was incredible! Whilst the assessment process was certainly challenging, it was an overwhelming positive experience all round and strangely enjoyable to boot. Both the original application and the presentation really encouraged us to think critically and assess what, and why, we do what we do in our industry; our company and our individual roles. Something we will take with us throughout our careers. The Assessment day itself was nerve wracking but ran smoothly from start to finish with the individual assessors immediately putting us at ease, giving us the perfect opportunity to showcase to the best of our abilities. Attending the Awards presentation, being finalists and eventual winners was a wonderful experience. The calibre of entrants in all categories was outstanding and to be recognised for our efforts and achievements, not just by our colleagues but also by our peers and the industry as a whole, was truly incredible. We would like to thank the organisers and all involved in the Pf Awards for this fantastic opportunity as well as all those within Forte UK for your support and encouragement, not just in this competition but every day. We would like to encourage anyone wanting to demonstrate their abilities and passion for their roles, to challenge themselves to enter Pf Awards 2017. You will not be disappointed.”

Account Initiative Project Award Luci Lakeland, Bayer plc “Winning the account initiative project was a moment I will never forget. The project had been something close to my heart since I began working for Bayer two years ago and to be recognized for this was a fantastic experience. Initially I submitted a written application outlining the project and the positive outcomes for patients, health care professionals and the CCG that had been achieved by working jointly with the NHS. When I was selected as a finalist I was excited to be able to have the opportunity to present this to a panel of judges in more detail at the assessment day. Despite the nerves I found it a really positive experience as the judges really put me at ease. The awards ceremony was a fantastic evening spent with Bayer colleagues and to have my name called out as a finalist

was fabulous and then to be announced as the winner was quite a shock. My colleagues helped me celebrate in style especially as many were finalists themselves and some also were winners. I feel very proud to have won this award and would encourage others to enter as this is a fantastic opportunity to be recognised for successful partnership working with the NHS, which ultimately improves the lives of patients. Emerging Talent Award Shakti Chauhan, Johnson and Johnson Diabetes Care Companies “Looking back at this whole process it’s amazing to think that I was a part of the journey from start to finish. For me, the Pf Awards don’t just represent success, but also represents growth; growth on a professional and personal level. The process exposed me to some exceptional talent, the best from across

Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016

the country. Going through this really helps you nurture and develop skills and understand more about yourself and your capabilities. The process was tough but definitely worthwhile in that it allows you to step outside your comfort zone and aim for the skies! It’s what LifeScan Johnson & Johnson is all about; being able to provide the best to our customers and their patients and for me, being part of that team has really helped me come this far and win the award. The Emerging Talent category is a fantastic opportunity for up-and-coming professionals to boost their start into the industry and I wish all success to future applicants.” Secondary Care Specialist Award Oliver Hardman, LEO Pharma “I was delighted that my company (LEO) supported my nomination for the Pf Awards, and extremely excited to have the opportunity to benchmark myself against the best in the industry. The assessment day was demanding but a really great experience. The business case study, presentation and role play really tested all the skills that we regularly use in our profession every day. The judges / assessors were rigorous in their analysis and asked some truly insightful questions. After the thrill of the assessment day was over, it was just a matter of waiting a week for the awards ceremony and the winners to be announced. The Pharma Field team organised a great night, and it

was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with old friends whilst also making some new contacts along the way. The entertainment was great and helped to ease the nerves up to the announcement of the awards. When it was announced that I had won the award I was ecstatic! It really is an honour to be recognised as being at the top of your field, especially when the competition was so strong. I’d recommend entering to anyone that gets the opportunity.”

I was overwhelmed to be recognised as the Remote e-Representative of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my colleagues at Ashfield Healthcare who have played instrumental roles in my development throughout my career as I couldn’t have achieved this recognition and success without them. I also owe a big thank you to the Pf Awards organisers and all of the assessors involved who made the highlight of my year possible.”

Remote e-Representative Award Connor Surrell, Sanofi in partnership with Ashfield Healthcare “It was a privilege to have been nominated to represent Sanofi, in partnership with Ashfield Healthcare, at the Pf Awards 2016 in the “Remote e-Representative” category. The assessment day was both challenging and exciting, a particular highlight for me was the presentation on one of my key successes. It was a great opportunity to share the patient centric joint working between myself representing the pharmaceutical industry and the NHS, with all parties involved achieving the shared goal of improving patient care. The awards ceremony again was a great opportunity to network with the best in the industry and share the recognition of the hard work the pharmaceutical industry does to improve care for patients and outcomes for the NHS.

Learning and Development Initiative Award Raheel Mirza, Ashfield Healthcare “I am absolutely delighted to have won this joint award in the Learning and Development Initiative category. The overall experience from beginning to end was a fun and enjoyable one, right from the assessment day through to the Awards dinner. Everyone was encouraging and supportive throughout the process. The Awards night itself was a fantastic event. I thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and seeing the winners receiving their awards. This means a lot to everyone involved at Ashfield Insight & Performance and personally this is one of the highlights of my career as the Pf Awards are recognised as a prestigious pharma award. I look forward to being involved again next year!” Account Management Team Award Joint Winner: Roger Lord & Trevor Baguley, Bayer plc “It was great to be nominated to take part in the Pf Awards, Account Management Team category. Trevor and I represented the whole Manchester account team which numbers 7 people in total, all working hard to ensure we keep fulfilling our objectives. The assessment day was very testing but held in a very supportive environment which made the whole experience very enjoyable. The evening at the Lancaster London hotel was a great night. It was a brilliant opportunity to meet fellow nominees from across the industry and meet up once again with some friends from the past. To win the

award really was the icing on the cake. It was great to receive recognition from colleagues on behalf of the whole team back in Manchester. It is good to step outside of your comfort zone every now and then. I would encourage anyone thinking about taking part to embrace the whole experience and enjoy.“ Account Management Team Award Joint Winner: Michael Challice & Sue Huish, MSD “Being nominated for a Pf Award 2016 highlights the value we bring to MSD... Winning a Pf Award shows the value we bring to MSD, clinicians and patients. That’s the motivation now and in the future... Being assessed/judged by your peers at the Pf Awards and then celebrating with colleagues from across our industry as a Pf WINNER is something we will treasure and advocate to others ... get involved show others what you can do and you can be a winner.”

engaged with on the Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation Integrated Care Clinics. Leaving a legacy of education and prevention across many CCGs. Having been nominated , we were then chosen as finalists and invited to attend the assessment day with the rest of the finalists. The day was well run , if a little nerve wracking but we were able to engage and network with industry colleagues who were in the same boat. The Awards night itself was a fabulous evening and the shock of being top candidates and then winners was immense. We were really proud to have received this award in front of our peers in the industry. It was also a great night for Apodi as we had 4 top candidates in four categories. Thank you to Apodi for all the support you gave us and this award recognises all the hard work done not just by us, but by all the team. Thank you Pf Awards for a truly memorable experience.”

Account Manager Award, Commercial Innovation Award, & Outstanding Performer Award Mykie Leong-Chadwick, MSD “What an evening! I was so proud to be nominated for the Account Manager category by my company. MSD has provided fantastic support for pursuing innovative ideas to work collaboratively with my customers; it was an honour to represent them.

The assessment day, whilst challenging, was conducted in a friendly and wellorganised manner by the wonderful facilitators and judges. I have attended the Pf Awards previously and always dreamed of being “one of those people” who is recognised with an award; it goes to show that with the support of a great company, manager and team, anyone can be “one of those people”! To win three awards was unbelievable! An absolute career highlight! I’m not sure how I’m ever going to top that… I may have to incorporate fire-breathing or uni cycling into my work projects? I would recommend entering the Pf Awards to anyone; such a great opportunity for meeting people from other companies and building connections. Thank you Pf for an unforgettable experience.” Pf AWARDS BROCHURE 2016
