“This year’s awards really have been quite momentous. The calibre of our entries gets stronger and stronger.”
Introduction I
’m so passionate about Pf Awards – it’s developed and grown so much over the 17 years it has been running. This year’s awards really have been quite momentous. We had a record number of companies enter and the entries just kept arriving – it was superb. Every year I stand on the stage at the Pf Awards Dinner and say a public thank you to our sponsors, some of which have been with us for 17 years. Their contribution is critical to the success of the Pf Awards and I genuinely mean it when I express my thanks to them. What myself and the steering group have noticed over the years is that the calibre of our entries gets stronger and stronger. Therefore, our assessment needs to reflect this, and become more challenging to ensure that only the best of the best are crowned as winners of a Pf Award. The Assessment Day on 2nd March was buzzing with a mixture of nerves and high energy and all of the candidates handled the day and represented their company very professionally.

With an increase in candidates successfully through to the Assessment Day this year we needed to expand our panel of independent judges. Our judges are an integral part of the Pf Awards and I would like to say thank you to them for giving up their time to ensure our assessment process is robust and carried out with great integrity. I know it is a day we can all reflect on with great pride. Congratulations to this years’ winners; I look forward to welcoming you to join our previous winners at the prestigious Pf Award Winners Club in September. Until then happy reading! Best wishes, Melanie MEL ANIE HAMER Founding Director, Events4Healthcare Ltd

“Excel Communications is delighted to be sponsoring the Learning & Development Award for the second year. Having personally joined the Pharmaceutical industry 30 years ago I have seen very many changes. However, the power of fantastic and thought-provoking trainers – and training – to challenge, support and inspire the very highest performance is the one constant. It was great to see a wide variety of local and global training initiatives addressing skills, product or leadership development, and all competing with confidence and enthusiasm. The finalists were all excellent and it is a shame that there can only be one, well-deserved winner. As a sponsor and judge, Excel Communications was looking for clear learning goals, innovative design and behaviour-based evaluation. Needless to say the learning itself had to be engaging, practical and memorable if it was to inspire and embed the change that people, companies and patients deserve. We know that excellence in leadership and communication ultimately means better informed healthcare professionals, which ensures better managed patients. It is this unique link between great training and patient health that makes the Learning & Development Award so important.”

“Personal selling has been the central point to pharmaceutical promotion, with a focus on the interaction between the sales representative and the HCP. This relationship has evolved as both physical and market access has declined, however, personal selling remains a powerful and successful channel to influence behavioural change. e-Detailing has become an essential component with targeted and impactful interactions to amplify the personal selling channel alongside field sales teams. In 2014, Pf Awards recognised the e-Detailing channel for the first time with a dedicated award, and Republic M! is a proud sponsor as the pioneers of the channel in the UK.

The Judges “I think I learn as much from the candidates as they do by entering the awards.” Sally Fagan, Rendez-vous Management Consultancy
“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of judging the 2017 Pf Awards. It was a smoothly planned event, the fellow judges were all very interesting to meet and talk to, and spending the day at a football stadium was a nice change of scene for me! It was equally interesting to meet the candidates and be a part of their award application process. I very much enjoyed the awards ceremony and dinner the following week too – it was a fun social event and I had some insightful and thoughtprovoking conversations with my table neighbours. I hope that I get the opportunity to do it again next year!” Ingrid Cohen-Pope, FRSA, Creating Space Coaching
“I observed an exceptionally high standard of candidates while judging the Secondary Care Specialist category. All the candidates should be really proud of what they achieved on that day.”
“This was my first Pf Awards and I was extremely impressed with how the event was organised and delivered. It was clear that the participants were delighted to be recognised for their achievements.”
Laura Rosenthal, Medical and Pharma Salesforce (MAPS) Training Services Ltd
Anthony Anandan, Imperial College Health Partners
“It was a pleasure to support the Pf Awards as a judge this year. Congratulations to all of the candidates and, of course, the worthy winners.”
“The Pf Awards is a great way to give people, within the industry, a forum to demonstrate excellence in their role alongside their peers.”
Sharron Whitehead, Consultant Marketer
“Extremely well organised and thoroughly thought out. The Pf Awards is the one to throw your hat into the ring for, if you want to be recognised as the best of the best!”
Paul Westnedge, CHASE

The Winners EMERGING TALENT AWARD
NEW ACCOUNT MANAGER AWARD
Georgia Gray, Forte Pharma Ltd “Absolutely honoured to have won the Emerging Talent award at the Pf Awards. The whole experience has been really rewarding and I would recommend entering to anyone with a passion for the industry, as the calibre of candidates is second to none. The Assessment Day was an intense yet rewarding process. The atmosphere is electric from the moment you arrive. The highlight of the day for me was my presentation – the judges were supportive throughout and asked some insightful questions. Then came the Pf Awards Dinner which was a vibrant evening filled with great networking opportunities and being able to celebrate the hard work of everyone involved. Being named a finalist and then to go on to win has been unreal. Winning the award has helped me recognise my potential and enhanced my motivation to perform over and above.”
Ben Clark, Astellas Pharma Ltd “I was delighted to be nominated by my company for the New Account Manager Award – it was great to get the recognition that they thought I was up to it! The Assessment Day was a big challenge though – a morning of high pressure tests back-to-back, and a there was a big sigh of relief when I finished my last presentation, but at the same time it was a really enjoyable experience. All of the judges were supportive and encouraging; they clearly just wanted to see the best I had. And it was a great opportunity to mingle and network with so many candidates from other companies too. The awards evening was a fantastic event, I had no expectations of winning and just wanted to enjoy it, so it was a huge surprise when my name was called! It was great to be able to celebrate afterwards with my Astellas team and Manager, who have all been so supportive of my development and first year in this job. Winning the award is a real confidence booster, that I have what it takes to become a great account manager!”
e-REPRESENTATIVE AWARD
Rebecca Denny, Republic M! UK Ltd. “I was equally excited and nervous at again being nominated for this year’s Pf Awards, having made the top five last year. The format this year was even more challenging however, I was pleased to be able to not only showcase my skills and passion for selling, but also demonstrate the impact that e-Detailing can make as part of a multichannel approach to marketing and selling pharmaceuticals. It was a proud moment because I was joined in the final five by two other colleagues who in my opinion equally deserved to win. I can remember waiting to clap one of them when my name was announced. It was a fantastic evening and the Pf organisers had once again laid on a brilliant evening conducive to celebrating with colleagues old and new.”

SALES TEAM AWARD
David Gleghorn & Sara Hale, UCB Pharma “We were both very honoured to represent the Northern Immunology Team at the prestigious Pf Awards for the Sales Team Award, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the process. The Assessment Day was tough but really fun, and we are so grateful to UCB for the time and resource afforded to us as we finalised our preparations for the big day. The set up was very professional; the judges were extremely friendly and encouraging, which was a welcomed relief! We came away confident that we had given the best account of ourselves and our colleagues, and looked forward to the Pf Awards Dinner the following week.
On the night, the anticipation grew and as our category arrived we were delighted to see that we had made the final five, but to actually win it was a really incredible feeling. We would encourage anyone who may be considering this in the future to embrace it fully and benchmark yourselves against the best in the industry – you never know where you may finish! This award recognises the fantastic achievements of the entire Northern Immunology Team. Thank you to all who were a part of it.” REGIONAL MANAGER AWARD
Rob Turnbull, Thornton & Ross Ltd. “I was delighted to be nominated in the Regional Manager category to represent Thornton and Ross at the premier awards event in the industry – the Pf Awards. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey towards the finals night, although the Assessment Day itself was certainly very demanding to say the least. The judges knew how to ask challenging questions through both the role play and the presentation elements. The Pf Awards Dinner was superbly hosted by the Pf team – the atmosphere was full of energy and entertaining, and it was great to catch up with so many familiar faces across the industry. To win the Regional Manager Award is surely going to be a highlight of my career in the industry and there can be no greater accolade than to be recognised in front of ones’ peers from across pharma. I am proud to have won the Regional Manager category for myself and for Thornton & Ross. Overall the experience has been very positive, and I look forward to being involved next year. Thanks Pf.”
e-REPRESENTATIVE AWARD
Neil Lawton, Roche in partnership with Ashfield “This is a moment in my career that I will remember for a long time! I was absolutely delighted to be nominated for the e-Representative Award, representing Ashfield in partnership with Roche. Everyone at Ashfield was proud to have won this category last year, and is now over the moon that we have kept hold of the trophy for the second year in a row. Attending the Assessment Day was a fantastic moment for me; such is the reputation of the Pf Awards, that to even to get to this stage was a reward in itself. The day was enjoyable and great fun, but the tasks set by Pf meant that we had to stretch to our best – and I’m certain that everyone did! The energy and buzz created on the day was infectious – this was picked up by everybody and helped us all perform at our best. The final part of this extraordinary story was to not only attend the awards evening, but to be honoured with being awarded the e-Representative Award. Thank you to Ashfield and my team colleagues for enabling me to achieve this accolade, in what I believe is the best industry to be a part of.” CLINICAL NURSING AWARD
Kathy Wadhams, Ashfield “When I was nominated by my manager to enter the Pf Awards, I wasn’t sure I was a worthy candidate, but getting through the first stage was a real confidence boost. When the Assessment Day arrived, it was amazing to see so many other nurses, nervous just like me, and, even though we had all only met that day, everyone was so friendly and supportive. The assessment process, which consisted of two presentations and an NHS exam, was rigorous, but very exciting. I was extremely nervous but decided to just be myself – I know that I am passionate about the job that I do and I wanted to ensure that this came across to the assessors. The Pf Awards Dinner was a fantastic night, where I met other candidates from all different companies and roles – everyone was lovely.
When the nominees were announced, I couldn’t believe my name was called, and by the time the winner was announced, I was utterly shocked – I barely remember walking to the stage! What a fantastic feeling. I am so grateful and incredibly proud of my achievement and would recommend this to anyone if they are offered the opportunity to enter. Go for it! Without a doubt, this was one of the best experiences of my life.” LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Kim Lafferty and Peter Mulcahy, GlaxoSmithKline “We are so pleased that we won the Learning and Development Award! This was completely unexpected as we found the written submission and Assessment Day rigorous, demanding and surprisingly enjoyable. A particular highlight was meeting colleagues from other organisations. The whole experience enabled us to tell our story of how we designed and delivered one of our high potential leadership development programmes. It made us reflect on our practice, summarise the programme’s impact and reconnect with past participants to discover the lasting effects of this highly immersive and experiential programme. The Pf Awards Dinner was a wonderful way to celebrate being shortlisted with the team and our partners. The champagne flowed when we heard of our success! A huge thank you to the judges for their attentiveness, their questions and their kind words of congratulations. We are delighted and proud to receive this prestigious award on behalf of GSK.” PRIMARY CARE SPECIALIST AWARD
Kashif Yaqoob, Star Medical “After putting in the ground work, I was over the moon at being nominated from an experienced team. The open culture at Star encouraged healthy competition and we all received immense support from all the team at Star. The weeks and days leading up to the Assessment Day were nerve racking, and the drive in the morning was horrible! However, once I entered the building and
saw a few familiar faces, I settled down and with a packed day ahead there was no time to think about nerves. The Assessment Day was extremely challenging. It consisted of an NHS business case study and NHS assessment under exam conditions, a role play and presentation, to end the day. I looked forward to the Pf Awards Dinner with excitement. Aware that I had put in a solid performance, I braced myself for the announcement. I was thrilled to see three Star representatives, including myself, had made the top six. Then came the big headline! I was emotional and overjoyed! It was a very proud moment for me and my family, as well as Star. I’m still walking on air and wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again!” SALES TEAM AWARD
Andy Baldry and Agnes Svilpaite, Bayer Pharmaceuticals “Where do I start! For us as a team to be nominated for the Pf Awards was fantastic and a great opportunity to demonstrate how well my team had done throughout 2016. Then to be a finalist and win was amazing. The whole experience of the Assessment Day was a positive one and to be representing Bayer within a competitive industry environment against the best of the best was awesome. The day its self was nerve-wracking due to the fact that we wanted to ensure we did our team proud and really show off their efforts and hard work through 2016. We felt privileged to demonstrate our passion, dedication and commitment to all key stakeholders – patients, NHS, customers and our business. The level of knowledge and expertise demonstrated by the judging panel makes our achievement even more rewarding and satisfying. Attending the Pf Awards Dinner was a great experience and the evening was a credit to the organisers and really showed off the importance and value placed on the awards throughout the industry. We are extremely proud to have won the Sales Team Award 2017.”

MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC LIAISON AWARD
JOINT WORKING AWARD
EXPERIENCED ACCOUNT MANAGER AWARD
Catherine Pollard, AbbVie Ltd “It was a privilege to have been nominated to take part in the Pf Awards and I am truly delighted to have won the MSL Award. As a relatively new MSL in the industry I have received so much support and encouragement from all of my colleagues at AbbVie, which has really helped me to develop in my role. I would highly recommend everyone to take up the opportunity to be involved in the Pf Awards, regardless of your experience – just give it a go! Thank you to Pf Awards for a wonderful evening and congratulations to all of the finalists and winners.”
Phil Unsworth, Novo Nordisk Ltd. “I am absolutely delighted to have won the Joint Working Award in recognition of the successful partnership between Novo Nordisk and the NHS in the development of Goals of Diabetes Education. Novo Nordisk is committed to helping the 31,500+ young people with diabetes in the UK. Our approach is not simply to treat diabetes, but to help the people it affects to live better lives in the knowledge that the condition does not define them. This approach has informed initiatives such as Goals of Diabetes Education, which facilitates patient-centred learning in order to enable children and young people to gradually take charge of their diabetes over time. Winning this award demonstrates the value that Novo Nordisk can bring to healthcare professionals and patients – and that makes me feel incredibly proud. I would encourage others to enter as this is a fantastic opportunity to be recognised for successful partnership working with the NHS.”
Sharon Preston, MSD “To win the Experienced Account Manager Award is one of the greatest highlights of my career. I have been a finalist twice so to actually win the award this time felt incredible – and completely unexpected! Even with my many years’ experience in the industry, I found the Assessment Day stretching. The various components really pushed me to produce outcomes that matched my high standards – but this is what made it a great experience! I had the opportunity to meet other candidates and learn from their wealth of experience too. That’s the key to it all – keep on learning and stretching yourself. I owe so much of my success to the people I work with on a daily basis. Their support, collaboration and passion drive me to be the best I can be, while MSD encourages the innovation and motivation to do things “differently” for the benefit of patients. It makes for an awesome place to work. Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for giving me such a fantastic opportunity.”
SECONDARY CARE SPECIALIST AWARD AND OUTSTANDING PERFORMER AWARD
Alison Duncan, AbbVie Ltd “First of all I want to say how lucky we are to have an opportunity through the Pf Awards to benchmark ourselves and meet peers across the industry, in a variety of different roles and functions from many different companies, at an event like this. I was delighted to be nominated within AbbVie to enter this whole process and to get through to the final Assessment Day. This was a great experience and one I’ll never forget – the sense of excitement and trepidation within the main room was palpable and new friends were made. The Assessment Day was really well organised and was designed to be challenging and to test the skills we use on a daily basis. My category involved role play, NHS knowledge quiz and business case presentation. The judges were briefed to put us at ease, but also challenge our thinking and I learnt so much about myself in the process. The Pf Awards Dinner was great fun and to go on to win, not only the Secondary Care Specialist Award, but also the overall Outstanding Performer Award was a major highlight of my career. The support within the room and recognition given to all finalists was amazing and it was a great night to celebrate all the fabulous work the pharmaceutical industry does year in year out, to help drive improved patient care and outcomes for the NHS. A massive thank-you to all my colleagues within Abbvie for all their support and encouragement and to the organisers for making this an experience I will value for a very long time to come.”

JOINT WORKING AWARD
Helen Thornton, St Helens and Knowsley Teaching NHS Trust “Winning a Pf Award for Goals of Diabetes Education was a moment I will never forget. The initiative is something I have been working on for over seven years, and for it to be recognised for the benefits it brings to children and young people with diabetes is fantastic. Goals of Diabetes Education is a clear example of how joint working between the NHS and Novo Nordisk can really improve the education, management and future of diabetes care. I feel extremely proud to have won this award – a real career highlight!” JOINT WORKING AWARD
Emma Winberg, Novo Nordisk Ltd. “I have always taken great pride in the relationships I build with healthcare professionals and truly believe that strong working partnerships are key to improving outcomes for patients, the NHS and industry. For this to be recognised in the form of a joint working (NHS with pharma) award for the Goals of Diabetes Education project is an incredible feeling. The process has provided a great opportunity to showcase joint working between Novo Nordisk and the NHS – with all parties united in the goal of improving the care of children and young people with diabetes. The calibre of entrants in this category was outstanding so to be a winner in this group is a great achievement!”
ACCOUNT TEAM AWARD
Martyn Beauchamp, Jenny Page and Melanie Barker, MSD “We are delighted to have been presented with the Account Team Award at this year’s Pf Awards! For us, this award acknowledges the true benefits we have seen from working collaboratively across franchises within MSD, in order to address our evolving customer needs and the NHS environment. We feel we have benefitted hugely, both as a team and as individuals, by drawing on each other’s skills and capabilities and developing a wider appreciation of the opportunities open to us all. As a result that we are able to better align to our customers’ agenda and add true value in this field. The value this approach has generated has been felt by our customers, the wider NHS, MSD and most importantly, the patients who access our products and services. We have thoroughly enjoyed the Pf Awards process and wholeheartedly recommend this experience to our industry colleagues.”
