The cities
Visits during the first week:
Cádiz Cadiz is almost entirely surrounded by water and it is considered the oldest city in the Western World. It was founded (in 1100 BC) by the Phoenicians. Its port was chosen by Columbus as the point of departure for his second voyage to the New World. Spain’s first liberal constitution was signed here in 1812. During this tour, the students will visit: The City Hall, Barrio del Pópulo, Tavira Tower, Old and New Cathedral, San Sebastian Castle, The Roman Theatre, Plaza de las Flores, The Central Market, La Viña, Caleta´s Beach... and many other interesting and historical places.
Seville As the capital of Andalusia, Seville has a wealth of history, culture and food to offer. Situated on the plain of the river Guadalquivir, after the discovery of the Americas, Seville became one of the economic centers of the Spanish Empire. Its port monopolized the trans-oceanic trade. In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan departed from Seville for the first circumnavigation of the Earth. The students will visit: The Cathedral, The Royal Alcazar Gardens, Plaza de EspaĂąa, MarĂa Luisa Park, The Santa Cruz Quarters, Gold Tower and more!
BaeloClaudia Ruins Baelo Claudia is an ancient Roman town situated on the province of Cรกdiz. Its history lies in the trade routes serving Europe and North Africa. The ruins of Baelo Claudia, with its impressive temple of Isis, aqueducts, thermal baths, forum and basilica, and especially the large fish-salting factory, show how important the town was to the region and the world. After the visit the students will go to the beautiful Bolonia beach, famous for its big sand dune.
El Puerto de Santa María El Puerto de Santa María also known as the “Town with a Hundred Palaces”. One of its most emblematic buildings is the Castle of San Marcos (10th-14th century). It was in this town that sailor Juan de la Cosa drew, in the year 1500, the first map of the world that included the American continent. Some of the places to visit are: The Royal bullring, San Marcos Castle, Fuente de las Galeras and one of the most famous wineries in the area, Bodegas Osborne. This Bodega is the birthplace of the Osborne bull, a unique symbol in the history of design and an icon of Spain in the world.
Jerez de la Frontera Jerez de la Frontera dates back to the Moorish occupation, and even at this time it was famous for its sweet wines, which the British pronounced “sherry”. It is called “de la Frontera” because it once stood on the frontier between the Moorish and the Christian realms. Thanks to its wine, “jerez” or “sherry”, the equestrian tradition, the bulls, flamenco and motor-racing, this Andalusian town’s name has been known far and wide for many years. They will visit the Cathedral, Alcazar, Plaza Arenal, Saint Dionisio Church and much more!
Aqualand Water Park Amazing water rides, wave pools, kamikaze slides, solariums... everything you could imagine for a refreshing day’s fun at Andalusia’s water parks. These places are very popular with locals and visitors alike in the summer season. Fun is guaranteed in a cool, refreshing setting to ensure an unforgettable day out.
Flamenco
Students will enjoy a brief introduction to the art of Flamenco dance for complete beginners. Flamenco was declared one of the “Masterpieces of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.” It is a Spanish art form made
up of three parts: guitar playing (guitarra), song (cante), and dance (baile). Flamenco dancing is characterized by its colorful costumes, intense movements, feet stamping (zapateado), and hand clapping (palmada); its execution is brilliant, noisy, and passionate.
Spanish cousine / meals routines
Students will learn how to cook some typical Spanish meals, such as gazpacho and paella. Gazpacho or Andalusian Gazpacho is a cold soup made of raw blended vegetables. A classic of Spanish cuisine, it originated in the southern region of Andalusia.. Paella is a traditional Spanish one-pan meal made with rice and numerous ingredients including various types of fish, seafood, poultry, and vegetables. There are many different versions and varieties of paella depending on the region of Spain, but the original home of paella is the Valencia area .
