Neighborhood News Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

Fall Fall 2013

President’s Message Association, had remarried and lived in Plum Grove Estates. The wedding was in his backyard. The weather was beautiful and so was the bride. He was especially proud of his house and the neighborhood, but the highlight of his back yard was the little creek that flowed through it. The yard was spectacular.

What a great summer. Two things happened this summer that made me remember the very first time that I became aware of Plum Grove Estates– my daughter, Amanda, was married in September and the Mecum Classic Car Auction came to the Schaumburg Convention Center on Meacham Road, less than a mile from here in October. I know that you are thinking, what the heck is Guy talking about here–so I’ll tell you. It was the summer of 1958 and I was a little Guy then, not yet a teenager. My cousin Sal who had just graduated from college as a new engineer married his fiance Jackie who had just graduated from nursing school. Jackie’s father, Dr. Julian Mavity, who I believe was the third President of our -1-

Dr. Mavity had just taken delivery of a new car. It was yellow and white and was one of the very first full sized Ford hard top retractable convertibles. I was already a car Guy and I could not believe it–a hard top and a convertible in one car. I am not sure if he was more proud of his daughter’s wedding, the house and backyard or the car. Neighbors were continually dropping in to give their best wishes to Sal and Jackie but they all wanted to see the car’s hardtop fold into the trunk. He must have put the top down and up again at least 100 times. Of all that took place that day I remember him telling my father that he had the greatest neighbors and that this was a wonderful place to live. Who could know then, what the future would bring some 55 years later. The Mavitys are long gone now but their

beautiful home and yard remain. The grounds are still spectacular. Unfortunately, the little creek now turns into a raging river during the rainy season and the house has flooded several times. Amanda and her bridesmaids dressed for her wedding at our house and we took pictures in the backyard. The weather was beautiful and so was the bride and all of the bridesmaids. Neighbors dropped in to give their best wishes. Sal and Jackie are still married. Sal retired as one of the Directors of NASA and was one of the engineers responsible for development of the heat shielding ceramic tile technology used for our space craft re-entry into the atmosphere. Jackie retired as Continued on next page…

I’m no longer little Guy, so I guess I am now an older Guy, and I am still a car Guy. Who would have ever thought back then that I would become the President of our homeowners association. Yet with all of the changes over time, one thing remains the same after all of these years–we have the greatest neighbors and Plum Grove Estates is a wonderful place to live. I hope to see all of you at the Holiday Party in December.

Guy Karm, President, PGEPOA

Social Report – Lynn Meinzer The Annual Holiday Party for residents of Plum Grove Estates will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at the Plum Grove Park Club Building. We are expecting a visit from Santa for the children of PGE, (newborn to ten years old), plus festive music, good food and beverages, time to chat with neighbors – a great way to get in the Holiday Spirit! Call your reservations in early for this fun event.

Each officer serves a one year term and each director serves for a three year term. If anyone may have an interest in volunteering, please feel free to contact any of the board members.

Architectural Control – Dave Freeman Thinking of renovating or remodeling? The PGEPOA wants to thank the many residents who have been aware of and following the covenants. We have had numerous driveway, landscape and property renovations underway. We have worked with these residents to maintain the integrity of our community. So thank you for your cooperation. If you are planning any architectural changes or additions to your residence, architectural plans need to be submitted to the PGE Board, for approval, in addition to any permits required by Cook County or Palatine Township. Please contact David Freeman 1-847-303-6628 or email dave.freeman@cbexchange.com for questions on the procedures. One may also reference our website for our updated information that may apply to any future plans you are considering. By communicating your plans this can prevent a disruption which in time weakens the friendly atmosphere found in our neighborhoods. Thank for your consideration of our covenants and guidelines which are and were designed to maintain the integrity of Plum Grove Estates.

Landscape Report – Lynn Meinzer The end of the ‘Season 2013’ has arrived, seemingly with great speed! The autumn colors are very vibrant along with the Mums and Asters. Cleanup time has

Nominating Committee – George Reichl At the PGE October General Meeting the members voted the following slate to the 2014 PGE Association Board: President: Guy Karm Vice President: Dave Freeman Secretary: Debbie Denten -2-

also arrived and the common areas will be made ready for winter soon and bulbs for spring will be planted at the same time. Unfortunately, the Ash Trees on the north side of the Longacres and Briarwood Entrances are beyond saving due to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. They both will be removed and replaced with trees that are resistant to deadly diseases. Enclosed is a brochure from The Morton Arboretum explaining about this destructive Borer that attacks Ash Trees in a wide spread area, including our Northwest Suburb. Please read this information and if you know you have an Ash Tree, consult the info on the back of the flier. Ash Trees on your private property need to be taken care of by the homeowner. Free estimates to discover the condition of your Ash Tree is offered by most companies..

Membership Report – Maria Pappas Congratulations to the following new homeowners and we welcome you to Plum Grove Estates. Please join us in December for our 'Holiday Party' and in June for our 'Kick off to Summer Party', as well as our meetings. Invitations to all of our events are sent by mail. Reservations and RSVP are required to attend. Contact Maria Pappas (2291 Longacres) at 847-303-3536 with any questions or concerns that you may have. We look forward to meeting all of you. 369 Longacres Lane- Emmanuel & Alana Muniz 390 Meadow Lane-

Electric Aggregation Palatine Township has engaged an electric aggregation broker (Constellation) to negotiate reduced electric rates for residents in the unincorporated areas of Palatine Township. This was completed and everyone was supposed to have received letters from Constellation this past summer. Apparently several PGE residents (if not all of us) did not receive letters. Some of us did not receive letters due to the fact that we had switched from Com Ed in the past but we are still eligible for this program which does represent a reduced rate for electric usage. To take advantage of these lower rates you can call Constellation at 800 718 1493 and ask to be put on the program. Have your ComEd bill when you call, they will ask for information from the bill..

Attention!! Please don’t feed the squirrels or feral cats (Skunks, Racoons, and Coyotes)

Treasurer’s Report – Mary Crook During the October General Meeting, I presented the treasurer's report through September 30th. The budget overview portion showed how the board allocated income received through membership dues and ad revenue. We have been able to stay within budget in most expense categories. We had unexpected repairs to sections of fence along Algonquin road which took us over budget in the common maintenance area expense category. The board will be working on the budget for 2014 in the coming weeks. We anticipate the 2014 PGEPOA Membership Dues will be mailed out the first week of January. The treasurer's report also shows logs for our checking and savings accounts. The reserves summary tracks what the association has for longterm improvement. If you have any questions regarding the budget, please do not hesitate to contact me at treasurer@pgepoa.org -3-

We have a large population of skunks, raccoons and some coyotes being attracted to our neighborhood. When you put out food for the squirrels, feral cats etc. that does not mean that only they will be attracted to that food. Skunks will go wherever there is food! When you attract skunks and other wild animals to your yard, it means that we (your neighbors) have to BEWARE anytime we want to venture out into our yards. Please be kind and have respect for your neighbors. They are far more important than the wild animals that live around us. There is plenty of naturally occurring food available for all of the wild animals in our neighborhood! Be kind to your neighbors.

Approval needs to be submitted to the PGE Board for approval when performing any home improvement or maintenance over $1,000.00 WHEN? Any architectural change to the exterior of your home for an addition to your home. Architectural plans need to be submitted to the PGE Board for approval prior to commencement of work. If one plans to lay drainage tile or work with the culvert an engineering plan may be required X-2 Fences are restricted by covenant. Landscaping should be used for creating a privacy wall. Electronic fence or stakes recommended for pet control. Any fence needs PGEPOA approval, and only a contiguous fence shall be considered.

X-2 continued.. fence exceptions include: a. The area directly around the pool deck. Fence must be at least 50% see through and requires PGE approval b. Per PGE Board Decision, fences allowed on the outside border of the subdivision. Fence may be of solid wood design to block view, but not to exceed 6’0’ height c. Fences are not allowed pursuant to the Covenants and Restrictions. PGE will strictly enforce this policy. If a fence exists on the property it may remain but cannot be replaced X-3 indicates landscape projects over $1,000.00 should be submitted to PGE Board for approval. Cook County requires a landscape permit when a home is rebuilt or demolished X-4 indicates these structures/projects should be placed out of direct line of sight from the street and neighbor view when feasible. If a structure is placed in other areas of the property it is recommended the structure be obstructed from the view of others with landscaping. Projects or structures should be made of materials that compliment your home. Earth tones are recommended X-5 indicates any windows being replaced with the same size window do not need permit. If the size of the window/s is changing approval of PGE and a county permit is required Special Note-Any structure that is mounted/stabilized with ground penetrating instruments requiring a conical pier, footing or foundation PGEPOA Approval is needed Special Note- Palatine Township Road District has truck load restrictions at specific times of the year. Please contact to clear construction or delivery truck load limit clearance without fine or penalty Special Note- Palatine Township Road District maintains the right-of-way in many of the streets in unincorporated areas. Right of way with few exceptions is 66 feet wide and 33 feet from the center of the street to the property line. This is the rational for the requirement of approval for any work within that 33 foot area.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS ON ANY IMPROVEMENTS. THIS IS ESSENTIAL IN PREVENTING DISPUTES WHICH, OVER TIME, WEAKENS THE FRIENDLINESS OF A NEIGHBORHOOD. PLEASE REMEMBER, AS WELL, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT APPROVAL AND PERMITS BE GIVEN PRIOR TO BEGINNING ANY EXTERIOR WORK…………………………… THANK YOU

Permits are designed to protect life, property and prevent forest fires or false fire alarms brought by burning. Cook County has clear regulations that stipulate the conditions under which burning may occur. Open burning permits give authorities prior notice to any burns that will take place, thus reducing response time in the event of uncontrolled fire. Open Burning regulations are clearly defined in Cook County Code of Ordinances Section 30-387 of The Cook County Environmental Control Ordinances.
