Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

President’s Message

We are getting to that time of year again where everything starts to turn green and flowers pop up from the ground, and all the natural beauty of our neighborhood shines through. Remember that children will be out playing as the weather turns warmer, so please drive appropriately.

This summer the bridge on Briarwood will be reconstructed. Residents will still have access to their homes, but Briarwood Lane will be closed to through traffic. Roland Sachs, Palatine Township Road District Superintendent, and John Powers, Highway Commissioner, will be at our May general meeting to answer any and all questions you may have.

The State is doing a study on widening Meacham/Plum Grove Road. It appears the question is whether to make it three lanes or five lanes with a bicycle path. There is a group of residents opposing expansion to five lanes; if you are interested in getting involved you can contact Steve Sholish at sholish@comcast.net.

New Briarwood Lane Bridge Proposed

Pending approval from the Army Corps of Engineers and public funding, Palatine Township Road District is planning major repairs or total reconstruction of the bridge on Briarwood Lane that crosses over Salt Creek.

Roland Sachs, superintendent, explained the project to PGE POA homeowners at the February gen-

eral meeting. The township analyzes the condition of the bridge, built over 50 years ago, every two years, said Sachs, and has determined the structure has exceeded its design life.

The proposed new bridge would be wider and straighter than the current configuration, allowing Continued on page 3

Voting Districts in PGE Change in 2012

At our homeowners meeting last Wednesday there was some confusion as to where we vote in the upcoming primary on March 20.

Looking at the Web site below it appears that most of us have changed districts. The houses within the association are in at least three different districts, although it appears that some residents will be voting at the Plum Grove Park Club House (Palatine Township Precinct 19) or Walden Recreation Center (Schaumburg Township Precinct 2).

Call the Elections Department at (312) 603-0906, or please use the link below to find out what district you are in and verify your polling place. http://www.cookcountyclerk.com/ ELECTIONS/Pages/default.aspx

Briarwood Bridge from page 1 two vehicles and a pedestrian to cross at the same time. The masonry wall would be replaced by a concrete wall with a stone-like pattern. Residents questioned the design, voicing concern for safety when the slow-down hairpin turn is gone. Sachs noted the benefits, including eliminating the tight turn and blind corner, and encouraged residents to contact the township with their suggestions at palhwy@aol.com. The district will try to keep and maintain some of the older trees near the bridge. The proposed bridge will have minimal effect on the Salt Creek, said Sachs, so that area will continue to be affected by heavy rainfall runoff. Sachs emphasized that the bridge is not a contributing factor in the flooding.

The township is planning to begin working on the bridge in August or September, weather permitting. The cost of the bridge replacement is estimated to be $1 Million, paid for in part by state and township project funds.

ComEd Installs New Transformers: More May Come to PGE

Commonwealth Edison installed two transformers in Plum Grove Estates in February. The old transformers (see below), according to the workers, were installed in the late 1950s. In addition to causing electrical outages in the past few years, the transformers were not safely insulated, creating an electrocution hazard if the unit was opened or broken. The new transformers are fully insulated, and will shut down immediately if breached. The new transformers (shown at right) are also about half the size of the new transformers.

The workers suggested that other older transformers might be replaced in 2012, despite not failing often enough to automatically qualify for replacement. Factors include: the age and condition of the units; increased demand on the transformers from central air conditioning, computers, and other major electrical appliances; and the need for fail-safe operation. Repairs to the bridge had an estimated cost of $400,000, while replacing the entire bridge would place the costs at approximately $1,000,000. The replacement funds have been budgeted for over the past 3 years and come from bridge funds and road district funds. The Road District is moving forward with applications for approval and hope to begin work in August of this year. Roland Sachs will be returning for 6
