Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

Summer 2010

President’s Message

PGE Street Smarts

Happy Summer! I hope everyone is enjoying the season as much as Lauri and I. With all the rain, perennials and shrubs have just popped out of the ground. On the downside, I guess, I can’t recall a June in recent memory, when I’ve had to mow the lawn twice a week. Have you noticed, as I have, how well your neighbors keep up their properties? I really do get an overwhelming sense of pride from this.

Someone recently pointed out how many different ways we are literally on PGE streets (in addition to vehicles), especially in the summer:

By now, you’ve likely had a chance to eyeball the new signs and fencing at our PGE entrances. This project took longer than anticipated, but hopefully you will agree that the result was well worth the wait. Next up will be improvements to the landscaping. One of the problems we face in this regard is finding a way to water these plantings. While there are services that will trek in water tankers to do this, they tend to be pretty expensive. If you live next to one of the entrances, we may be asking you whether we can use your water. Also, if you’re willing to help do the watering, please contact Gary Dindia. Your cooperation would be very much appreciated. The Fishing Derby and Kickoff to Summer party were huge successes. Despite a rainy Saturday, we had a great turn-out at the lake and lots of fish were caught by PGE anglers. Check out the pix in this newsletter. Congratu-

lations to all who participated, and special thanks to Beth Prezembel for staging the event. More than 120 residents attended this year’s Kickoff party, about 50 percent more than last year. I hope you had a terrific time and were able to meet some neighbors whom you hadn’t known before. That’s really what it’s all about. Thanks to Lynn Meinzer for arranging the catering and hosting the party. As you can imagine, that was no small task. Take care. My best wishes to all of you for a wonderful rest of the summer, and I hope to see you at the October General Meeting. Randy Mitchell PGE POA President president@pgepoa.org

PGE Area Control and Landscaping Update Route 53 Frontage Roads The City of Rolling Meadows completed resurfacing the West Frontage Road between Kirchoff and Algonquin Roads. The project began and was completed on time. At PGE entrances there is now white striping marking the stop line and the road edges. Phase 2 is in progress on the East Frontage Road. The project is expected to finish in July 2010. Traffic is northbound only during construction. What about that rough patch of West Frontage Road that bridges the Salt Creek? The bridge and surface project is Phase 3 and is scheduled for work in 2011. Slowing down is your best defense against damage to your vehicle when you drive over this area.

PGE/Schaumburg Streets Meanwhile, within our neighborhood the Township of Schaumburg opened bidding for contractors to resurface the asphalt pavement in Plum Grove Estates. Work might begin as early as August 2010, a Township employee explained to Steve Sperling (PGE Civic Affairs). Wood posts have been installed on PGE streets and islands where curbside damage, from vehicles driving off the road, has been a problem. The posts have a reflective marker that will help drivers see the edge of the road at night. If you have any questions about Area Control, please call Gary Dindia at 847-397-3640 or send email to areacontrol@pgepoa.org.

Entrance Signs and Fences New entrance signs, with an updated PGE logo, and new iron fencing have been installed at all entry points into the neighborhood. The signs require little maintenance and the fencing should be maintenance-free. Thanks to QT Signs and Guy Karm for their efforts. New meeting and event announcement signs (see next page) are replacing the existing worn-out signs. These smaller aluminum signs were designed by Arlington Signs to complement the entrance signs.

Landscaping Landscaping that complements the new PGE entrance signs and fencing will be installed by a landscape contractor this Summer. Lynn Meinzer is reviewing plans and bids for the work. If you have questions about Landscaping, please call Lynn at 847-397-5832 or send email to social@pgepoa.org. Do you like what you see? Please let your board members know what you think about the improvements in our neighborhood.

Fishing Derby The fish in Plum Grove Pond met their match on June 5, 2010 as a group of anglers braved the rain to catch the most and the largest. The pond was restocked in Fall 2009, which resulted in a much higher yield for this derby than the previous year’s competition.

Participants Ryan Allen Angie Cornwell Nathan Cornwell Kelly Looye Kevin Looye Scott Looye Sarah Reichl William Sperling

Results Scott Looye, 11 fish (most fish caught); largest fish—a catfish Angie Cornwell, 10 fish Kevin Looye, 9 fish Sarah Reichl, 8 fish William Sperling, 7 fish Nathan Cornwell, 3 fish Ryan Allen, 2 fish Kelly Looye, 2 fish

Beth Prezembel organized the event and provided food, drinks, and prizes (Oberweiss gift cards!) to the competitors. Thanks to the parents, aunts and uncles who helped everyone go fishing! Summer Kickoff Party The evening of June 16, 2010 had perfect weather for swimming and outdoor eating, just in time for the PGE POA Summer Kickoff Party. Nearly 120 neighbors met at the Plum Grove Pool to enjoy Spring turning into Summer. Lynn Meinzer organized the event that included: •

Two tables full of great hot and cold food, plus desserts, from nearby Moretti’s Italian Grill

Soda and other refreshments

Swimming in the PGP pool

The pool looked great; about two dozen swimmers splashed around, dove off the diving board, and played games. A bird feeder filled with Skittles, donated by Landscape Depot in Lombard, was won by Rebecca Raford. She and her husband June Lee and their two daughters are new to Plum Grove Estates. The magic number was 1440 and she came closest with 1300. The guesses ranged from 450 to 10,000—quite a range, said Lynn. These photos (from Dawn Amos) and more are posted on the PGE POA Web site, http://www.pgepoa.org.

FOUND ITEM A personal belonging was left behind at the Summer Kickoff party. Please contact Beth Prezembel at 847-778-0982 or treasurer@pgepoa.org to describe and claim the lost item.

PGE POA General Meeting Minutes Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Call to Order The General Meeting of the Plum Grove Homeowners Association was called to order by President Randy Mitchell at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Plum Grove Park.

Board Attendees

available at www.pgepoa.org). Her presentation included the following information: •

The EPA recommends yearly testing for coliform bacteria/e.Coli and nitrates.

Well-water is hard because of the high mineral content, which can cause plumbing problems. A water softener will reduce hardness, but because the minerals are exchanged for sodium ions, it is not recommended for people with heart disease or high blood pressure. A water softener will not kill bacteria or eliminate lead or heavy metals.

Trace sells kits for testing water. Prices range from $25–$300, plus shipping, depending on the test. (Kits must be shipped to the Trace facility in Baltimore.) The Illinois Dept. of Health also conducts water testing.

Trace has tested water for homeowners in this area and test results have been negative. Several residents at the meeting have had their water tested and also found that the water was safe. I told him roof replacement in the same color/material is an automatic approval; I just need to see the plans. I explained that our approval letter is required by the County in order to get a Building Permit. He indicated intent to proceed without Permit since it takes months to obtain and work will be done in 1-2 days. So he never provided any written plans. I see no point in asserting ourselves now, unless we’re going to report the violation to the County.

Area Control Gary Dindia reported that: •

Cobblestone work and post installation are complete.

Entrance signs will be installed tomorrow. The fencing between the pillars will be completed within a couple weeks. Landscaping and accent lighting will be done once fencing is installed.
