Summer 2013

President’s Message

It's with great sadness that I start this President's Message as my good friend, Sandy Heinlein, passed away last week after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to her husband, Wally, and her daughters, Heather, Jennifer and Tiffany (who lives in Plum Grove Estates) and their extended families.

was going to like this neighborhood and that our family would be happy living here. Am I ever glad that I listened to her.

Many of you may have also known Sandy as she not only lived in Plum Grove Estates for some time, but she was a realtor for over 20 years who specialized in selling houses in Plum Grove Estates. As with many of you, Sandy found our house for my family. Sandy was not just a friend to me and to you, she was a friend to Plum Grove Estates as she believed in our neighborhood and promoted it to others.

Look at the Summer Kick Off Party-what a success. Great food--great drinks (I think my Mai-Tai recipe was a success as there were no left-overs to take home) and great neighbors. It was nice to see everyone catching up on things and having such a good time. So, a great big thank you to the Social Committee--Lynn Meinzer, Debbie Denten, Maria Pappas and Mary Crook. I was thinking that it will be almost impossible next year for anyone else to come even close to the success of this year's Summer Kick Off Party--so, as President, I am reappointing Lynn, Debbie Maria and Mary to the 2014 Summer Kick Off CommitteeCongratulations.

I remember her telling me that this is not just a neighborhood, it’s a place where your neighbor is not just your neighbor, your neighbor becomes you friend-it's a great place to live. Neighbors are there for you when you need help (flooding seems to come to mind) and they are also there with you in good times. She told me that I -1-

Many of you may say that it is not like that anymore- everyone is so busy and no one has time to be friends with and socialize with their neighbors. Well---to that I say that you are wrong.

So in closing, I just want to say Sandy was right--Plum Grove Estates is not just a

neighborhood--it's a great place to live!

Social Report – Lynn Meinzer PGE Residents ‘Kicked-Off’ to summer on June 19th on the terrace of Plum Grove Park Swimming Pool. The party was fun to plan and put into action with my Social Committee Members: Mary Crook, Debbie Denten and Maria Pappas. Each one of us shopped for certain ‘Jamaica Me Crazy - Kick-Off’ Pieces of the Party and delivered them to the Park. With all of us and the help of Sue and Gary Dindia and Nicole Epplen the party was ready to begin by 5:30 and ended about 8:30pm. It’s a fun event to attend! The ‘making me crazy’ part of the whole event was getting an accurate count for the reservations by a certain date. This number is that upon which all the purchases are based. Perhaps next year we will have an RSVP and then a call beforehand to confirm the numbers of PGE homeowners who will actually attend the party. With a limit on the number of people allowed on the terrace, we need to devise a reliable ‘head-count’ of PGE homeowners and their children attending to accommodate properly.

Civic Affairs Report – Steve Sperling On May 20, 2013 the new Palatine Township Board took the oath of office and was sworn in for a fouryear term. The board is led by Supervisor Sharon Langlotz-Johnson. Also serving on the board are two returning trustees, Art Goes and William Huley. They are joined by two new trustees, Bill Pohlman and Kevin McGrane. Returning to the board are Assessor Terry Kelly and Clerk Lisa Moran. Thomas Kaider is the newly elected Highway Commissioner.

Architectural Control – Dave Freeman Thinking of renovating or remodeling? The PGEPOA wants to thank the many residents who have been aware of and following the covenants. We have had numerous driveway, landscape and property renovations underway. We have worked with these residents to maintain the integrity of our community. So thank you for your cooperation. If you are planning any architectural changes or additions to your residence, architectural plans need to be submitted to the PGE Board, for approval, in addition to any permits required by Cook County or Palatine Township. Please contact David Freeman 1-847-303-6628 or email dave.freeman@cbexchange.com for questions on the procedures. One may also reference our website for our updated information that may apply -2-

to any future plans you are considering. By communicating your plans this can prevent a disruption which in time weakens the friendly atmosphere found in our neighborhoods. Thank for your consideration of our covenants and guidelines which are and were designed to maintain the integrity of Plum Grove Estates.

Landscape Report – Lynn Meinzer Summer has arrived - the time for enjoying warm days and colorful landscapes! The’ Knock-Out Roses’ at entrances and other shrubs are cooperating nicely – we’ve had that all-important

spring rain which helped them and made the grass thick and green as well. The ‘100 Frontage Road Shrubs’ all bloomed in June and will be putting on another foot or so this year. The ‘Trinity’ Pear Trees overlooking Brookdale Pond presented many white blooms a month ago. There are Blue and White Petunias to compliment the Roses at the Algonquin/Westwood Entrance. The north side of the Longacres Entrance has been replanted with some new shrubs and perennials since it was the only area that was devoid of plants this spring. The Tulips have been dug up and out and will be replanted come fall. The Brookdale Pond common-area shoreline continues to be a project to accomplish in an effort to control erosion over the years. Certain ‘islands’ within the street areas, have small ornamental trees that are in need of pruning or replacement. We will be monitoring each area. If you have Ash Trees on your property you may want to get an inspection by an arborist with a tree care company. Some of the Ash Trees in Plum Grove Estates have been found to show disease. Treatment is available, however sometimes the best solution is removal. The common areas are being mowed and maintained by Gabriel’s Landscape this year. The mowing is scheduled for Tuesdays at which time work is being completed to dig the edges around the planted beds and weeding of the ground within the

beds. The objective is to keep the grounds looking neat and well attended to. We have a beautiful Oak Woods Area here in Plum Grove Estates – hope you enjoy it this summer season!.

2013 Summer Kick Off PGE Residents ‘Kicked-Off’ to summer on June 19th on the terrace of Plum Grove Park Swimming Pool. The pool was enjoyed mostly by the children at our annual event, while the homeowners had a chance to catch up with neighbors enjoying a beverage of choice, amidst the flowers, pineapples and ‘island’ music! After a while the dinner, catered by Moretti’s, our excellent neighborhood ‘spot’ to eat, was ready to enjoy. The restaurant was able to prepare the menu requested by the Social Committee - close to the food you might enjoy in Jamaica! Fresh fruit and vegetable trays, garden salad, rolls, lime rice and skewered beef, chicken and veggies – topped off with key lime pie and pineapple upside down cake! Of course plus pizza for kids! Many residents left with a big, fresh pineapple – the door prizes!
