medicine. She has been an active volunteer at multiple local animal shelters including the Franklin County Dog Shelter, where the majority of her time was spent in their Shy Dog Program preparing and integrating shy and fearful dogs to the adoption process. Taylor is also active in the rescue community of central Ohio and has not only fostered and volunteered, but recently sat on the board as the Medical and Behavior Director of one of the largest Columbus, Ohio pit bull rescues as they transitioned from aversive training methodology to positive reinforcement. She has interests in low stress handling, population medicine, and behavioral modification. Kristin Hermann – I have been writing for Pittsburgh Pet Connections for four years in the Equine section. I have over forty articles published in national equine magazines including Dressage Today, The Chronicle of the Horse, Dressage & Ct, Horseplay and had a series in the USDF Bulletin before it was Dressage Today. I own a barn in Western PA called Coventry Equestrian Center and I have been at Coventry for 23 years. I teach riders how to train their horses, because I don’t train the horses for the riders anymore. And I feel my teaching is different because I teach the how and why not just the do this and do that. This is what I write about, the horse and why of training a horse and I call it Home School Your Horse. I ride an incredible Spanish Norman named Bracchus, and last year we showed Second level at national shows with an averaged score of 70%. Two years prior, we won the USDF All Breed Award for First Level (2014) and Training Level (2013). My Home Schooled student was also AQHA USEF AllBreed Award winner in 2015 Junior Young Rider. Another student was Half Draft USEF ALLBreed Winner the year before. Dressage is my passion, but it simply means, “The Gymnastic training of the horse.” So my soapbox is that all riders should learn the biomechanics of training the horse and train “dressage” because all horses benefit with gymnastic training. You do not have to show dressage to stretch your horse, ride your horse straight, or get it to canter as well to the left as it does to right. Jane Flores – Dr. Jane Flores is an integrative general practitioner and certified veterinary acupuncturist. Previously, Dr. Flores was a member of the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her achievements at the university include being awarded the prized Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teaching Award and being named faculty in the Bayer Institute for Healthcare Communication. She has also published various articles ranging in topic from compassion fatigue and burn-out to radiology. Dr. Flores currently serves on the boards for
the Columbus Academy of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University Friends of the Library and the Short North Business Alliance. Renee Hawley is the owner of Healing Partners LLC. She is an MSW, LISW-S, EMDR therapist with additional training in EMDR, Capacitar: a community based wellness and body processing approach, Equine Assisted Awareness and Shamanic Healing. Areas of expertise include wellness, parallel life reprocessing, trauma (PTSD), performance, serious illness and grief as well as supervision for students. Renee has experience with children and adults and provides programming and interventions where horses are utilized as the main modality of psychotherapeutic treatment - horses are extremely sensitive healers and will reflect real-time feedback for human patterns, behaviors and feelings. “This work is about the person from a sense of wholeness: mental, physical, psychological, relational, spiritual - and we are larger than the sum of our parts…. that’s where the healing lies.” Barbara L. Oglesbee, DVM, DABVP (Avian) is a Graduate of Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been board certified in Avian Medicine and Surgery since the specialty began in 1993. She began teaching Avian and Companion Exotic Mammal medicine at OSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, where she was an Associate Professor and served as head of the Exotic Animal Service, and continues to teach all of the exotic courses as Adjunct Professor today. She is currently in private practice, treating exclusively Avian and Exotic patients at MedVet Hilliard, and has been on staff since 2009. Dr. Oglesbee wrote the clinical textbook The 5-Minute Veterinary Consult: Ferret and Rabbit. She has also authored many book chapters in veterinary textbooks and clinical papers on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of birds, rabbits, and other small mammals, and lectures at state, national, and international veterinary meetings. Melissa Ferry, DVM, MedVet Hilliard; Avian/Exotics service – I graduated from Allegheny College in 2005 with a Bachelor’s in Science - Biology. I took a few years off from school at that point in time to work in cancer research and in veterinary emergency medicine. I graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a DVM in 2012. I completed a one year internship under the mentorship of Dr. Barbara Oglesbee in avian/ exotics medicine and have continued on as her associate at MedVet Hilliard to help expand quality avian/exotics medicine in the central Ohio area Special interests include gastrointestinal conditions of small mammals and pain management. I am also actively pursuing board certification with the American Board of Veterinary
Practitioners in Exotic Companion Mammals (ECM). I belong to the following organizations: Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, Association of Avian Veterinarians, Columbus Academy of Veterinary Medicine. Adam Turpen, Director of SCRAM Wildlife Control NATURAL, HUMANE, PERMANENT – I am a 1997 graduate of the University of Toledo. I have a Bachelors degree in Wildlife Management. She held positions with the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, as well as Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Center for Child and Family Advocacy. Since 2004, Jen has provided services as part of a seven-doctor veterinary practice in east-central Ohio. She also offers consultations and sessions for practices and pet owners world-wide. Shari Yinger offers animal based mindfulness training that teaches you how to interpret all the unconditional love the natural world has to offer. With a degree in business from Miami University. The Stille Program - She has developed a program using animals and nature to teach mindfulness and to help you heal at an emotional level by learning to love your authentic
self. As a facilitator, she focuses on breath, awareness, intention and empowerment. We live in a technology driven time and Shari is here to remind us of the innate feeling to reconnect with all of life, which is bigger than ourselves. Her devotion to bringing to light all of the wisdom of the natural world and sharing it with others is what brings her the greatest joy. She lives on a farm in Pataskala, Ohio with her husband and 8 horses, 7 dogs, 6 cats, 2 goats, 6 bunnies, 21 chickens and a pig named Norman. She has 5 grown children. Dog Walking Tips for Fall By Dr. Mary Beth Leininger and Gina Fortunato
A
h, that crisp, fresh air! And the beautiful colors of the leaves as they change from green to glorious reds, yellows, and browns! Fall is a fabulous time to enjoy leisurely walks, trail hikes, and visits to the pumpkin patch with your dog. But if your pooch isn’t behaving on a leash, going out together can become a drag—quite literally! These tips can help you address three common dog walking problems, so you can enjoy autumn adventures with your best friend. 1. Pulling on the Leash Dogs often pull on the lead when something interesting grabs their attention. Some dogs also pull when you first head out the door because they’re just too excited to contain themselves. You can try these techniques to help stop your dog from pulling: • W alk faster. By picking up the pace, your dog will have less chance to notice things, like scampering squirrels or interesting scents, that can prompt pulling. • Try a different route. Take your dog to places where there are fewer temptations. For instance, if your dog tends to pull when in the presence of other dogs, choose a quieter time of day or a path that isn’t too busy for your walks. • Calm your dog down first. While most dogs are enthusiastic about going outside, a dog who is bouncing around the room before you even get the leash on may be more likely to pull. Teach your dog to stay calm before a walk by holding the leash quietly until all four paws are on the ground. Be patient and shower your dog with praise when they get it right. • Talk to your dog. Keep your dog’s attention on you and away from distractions by talking as you go along.
You can chat about the scenery, the weather, your plans for the day, or (hopefully!) how nicely your dog is behaving. It can also be helpful to put a few treats in your pocket to reward your dog for good walking manners. 2. Chewing on the Leash Like pulling, chewing is a natural behavior for dogs. It’s also a healthy one since it helps keep their teeth clean and jaws strong. But chewing on the leash before and during walks can become problematic, not to mention wear out your leash. You can try switching to a chain leash, which isn’t as fun to chew on as the synthetic or leather kinds. You can also try distracting your dog with some of the tips mentioned to avoid pulling, like picking up the pace and offering treats when your dog walks without noshing on the leash. 3. Barking or Lunging It can be embarrassing when your typically friendly dog starts barking or lunging at other dogs or people while you’re out walking. If these kinds of behaviors come up suddenly, you might want to take your dog to the veterinarian. An illness or health condition, like arthritis or ligament damage, can make a dog irritable and more easily upset. These behaviors can also start after an incident with another dog. If this is the
case, you might need to gradually get your dog comfortable being around other fourlegged friends. You can set up a supervised play date with a familiar dog or visit the dog park when it’s not too busy. If you’re not sure how to help your dog, talk to a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) or other professional for advice. Dog Walking Safety As you go out and enjoy fall activities, remember to keep your dog’s safety in mind. All sorts of injuries can happen unexpectedly. Your dog can get scratched or bit by another dog or small animal, get tangled in the leash, or eat something toxic before you realize it. Of course, you can’t always protect your dog, but you can help your best friend get the best medical care possible with coverage from an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan. You can cover your dog for accidents, illnesses, preventive care, and even behavioral issues that can prevent you from enjoying walks with your dog. Visit www. IsYourPetCovered.com to learn more today! Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Waiting periods, annual deductible, co-insurance, benefit limits and exclusions may apply. For all terms and conditions visit www.aspcapetinsurance. com/terms.
