Black History Month Exhibition Fighting on Two Fronts: Black Military Service in the U.S. Through February 26, 10 am – 5 pm, Daily This exhibition highlights African American service and support of the U.S. military from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. During this 200-year period, African Americans have fought, worked and sacrificed in support of their country. Fighting on Two Fronts explores their efforts in the changing face of discrimination. The Black History Month Biannual Fine Art Exhibit Winston Harris: Printmaking in 2 and 3 Dimensions Through March 16, Monday– Friday, 8:30 am– 5 pm The work of Mr. Harris is an innovative combination of traditional and non-traditional, abstract printmaking techniques that are utilized to produce compelling two dimensional and three dimensional mono prints. Through experimentation and working with established painters, sculptors and printmakers as well as working under the tutelage of Sam Gilliam, Jr. and Michael Platt, Mr. Harris has been able to expand his printmaking into the third dimension. KIDS’ DAY OUT: Rockcreek Steel Drums “The Birth of Steel Drum Music” Rockcreek Steel Drum’s Band, Bermuda Blue takes the audience on a journey through the development of the modern steel drum instrument. CONCERT: Indigo Love: “An Evening with Sarah Vaughn” Indigo, a naturally gifted performer has been described as “easily captivating and able to capture an audience with her extraordinary talent, honest emotions and flawless delivery, a truly gifted and all around performer.” Indigo’s sound is sultry, at times sexy and most definitely versatile. Her mesmerizing style includes everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Sarah Vaughn and she is a consummate storyteller, with an ability to relate to her audience. Indigo, the recipient of Delta Sigma Theta’s 1992 Young Artist Award, and in 2003, semi-finalist in Baltimore’s 14th Annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, has performed at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, Carter Barron, Twins Jazz Lounge and Manhattan’s Sugar Bar. Odean Pope Philadelphia saxophone legend Odean Pope integrates several musical influences — including the church choir of his youth, Philadelphia jazz and R&B of the 1950s, and classical woodwind chamber music—to create a sound all his own. Famed for the husky sounds he produces on the sax, Pope spent more than two decades as a member of the Max Roach Quartet and has received acclaim around the globe, including Best Tenor Saxophone Player at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Corcoran College of Art and Design 2013 Graduates, a Pop-up Exhibition For more than 120 years, the Corcoran College of Art and Design has been a leading force cultivating and driving the visual arts in the Washington metropolitan area. Their students are among the best and brightest, and their alumni number among the most distinguished artists in the canon of American art. This one-week, pop-up show invites the 2013 graduating class to take over the Brentwood Arts Exchange Gallery for experimentation and showcasing their BFA-culminating visual and performance-based art works. LIVE at Montpelier! Guy Davis He’s a musician, composer, actor, director and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories and his own original works. Davis, the son of actors/writers Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis, has recorded nine studio albums with Red House Records and has appeared as a guest artist on numerous albums, videos, films and television shows. Allen Linder, Benedict Oddi, Christina Osheim Ceramic sculptor Christina Osheim, painter Benedict Oddi and sculptor/draftsman Allen Linder exhibit together for the first time. Although working in different forms and media, each artist shares sensibilities in their exploration of imagination and 21st century inheritance of early-mid 20th century surrealism. Allen Linder, widely known as a sculptor and represented by galleries across the U.S., will show recent drawings and 2-dimensional work. Benedict Oddi is the head of the Painting Department at Tennessee Technological University, and will be exhibiting in the metro area for only the second time. Christina Osheim received an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy in 2012, and is currently a studio artist at the regional visual arts powerhouse Red Dirt Studios. All ages; FREE; Brentwood Arts Exchange

Demonstration at DC Glassworks In conjunction with the exhibition at the Montpelier Arts Center, the artists at DC Glassworks and Sculpture Studios will give a live demonstration of blowing glass in the Venetian style to make contemporary pieces. Using 2,300 degree molten glass from a 600 pound furnace, watch the artist work in teams to create a variety of works in clear and color.
