Black History Month Exhibition Fighting on Two Fronts: Black Military Service in the U.S. Through February 26, 10 am – 5 pm, Daily This exhibition highlights African American service and support of the U.S. military from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. During this 200-year period, African Americans have fought, worked and sacrificed in support of their country. Fighting on Two Fronts explores their efforts in the changing face of discrimination. The Black History Month Biannual Fine Art Exhibit Winston Harris: Printmaking in 2 and 3 Dimensions Through March 16, Monday– Friday, 8:30 am– 5 pm The work of Mr. Harris is an innovative combination of traditional and non-traditional, abstract printmaking techniques that are utilized to produce compelling two dimensional and three dimensional mono prints. Through experimentation and working with established painters, sculptors and printmakers as well as working under the tutelage of Sam Gilliam, Jr. and Michael Platt, Mr. Harris has been able to expand his printmaking into the third dimension. Black Artists of DC: Show Me What You’re Working With! (BADC). The exhibition is specifically intended to give artists a chance to present themselves as who they are and what they do, rather than limiting or interpreting work to fit a specific theme. It’s a chance to see what each artist considers his/her best work, how they see the world, in a celebration of the many voices and visions that comprise The Black Artists of D.C. Night of Doo Wop Celebrate Black History by looking into the past. GEICO Gecko Series Production* Bella Under the Bullying Big Top Behind the scenes at the circus, a new monkey would rather bully performers than build friendships. Ringmaster Bella works with the audience to come up with anti-bullying tools to help stop this bad monkey business through teamwork, compassion and respect. Recommended for grades Pre-K-5. Prince George’s Best Dance Crew Competition Bust a move with the Prince George’s Dance Crew Competition. Watch as ten teen crews battle it out for $1000 in prizes and the title of “Prince George’s Best Dance Crew.” All ages. Tickets: $3/person. Love 2 Dance Summit for Teens Teens ages 12-18, share your excitement about dance with other teens. The Butterfly Story Hudson Vagabond Puppets bring their larger-than-people dancing butterflies for a beautiful science lesson. Follow the monarch on its incredible 1,500-mile journey to Mexico as it metamorphoses from caterpillar to pupa to adult butterfly. KIDS’ DAY OUT: Rockcreek Steel Drums “The Birth of Steel Drum Music” Rockcreek Steel Drum’s Band, Bermuda Blue takes the audience on a journey through the development of the modern steel drum instrument. Bermuda Blue demonstrates different types of steel drums and other Caribbean instruments while playing Calypso music. Students join the band to play steel drums and tamboo bamboo. Family Fun at Montpelier! Rhythms and Rhymes for Wise Young Minds David Foreman, aka ‘Jali-D’ is an accomplished percussionist and spoken word artist who simultaneously combines his talents into an art form he calls “Rappercussions.” His intelligent and creative rhymes have entertained and educated both children and adults nationwide. Wine & Chocolate Wine and chocolate, what a pair! Join us for a lovely evening of decadence while our sommelier enlightens you on the best wine and chocolate pairings. Sample some of the best local wines and bring home a few bottles of your favorites. Discover new and unique chocolate flavors, plus tips on tasting, buying, and storing wine and chocolate. Animala Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets investigate the fascinating natural world of animals, and large and small insects. Through storytelling, beautiful scenery and life-like puppets that may wander into the audience, this is a unique experience for kids of all ages! CONCERT: Indigo Love: “An Evening with Sarah Vaughn” Indigo, a naturally gifted performer has been described as “easily captivating and able to capture an audience with her extraordinary talent, honest emotions and flawless delivery, a truly gifted and all around performer.” Indigo’s sound is sultry, at times sexy and most definitely versatile. Her mesmerizing style includes everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Sarah Vaughn and she is a consummate storyteller, with an ability to relate to her audience. Indigo, the recipient of Delta Sigma Theta’s 1992 Young Artist Award, and in 2003, semi-finalist in Baltimore’s 14th Annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, has performed at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, Carter Barron, Twins Jazz Lounge and Manhattan’s Sugar Bar. LIVE at Montpelier! Odean Pope Philadelphia saxophone legend Odean Pope integrates several musical influences — including the church choir of his youth, Philadelphia jazz and R&B of the 1950s, and classical woodwind chamber music—to create a sound all his own. Famed for the husky sounds he produces on the sax, Pope spent more than two decades as a member of the Max Roach Quartet and has received acclaim around the globe, including Best Tenor Saxophone Player at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Kids’ Day at Billingsley Local history bears repeating to the young and the young at heart. Kids’ Day includes storytelling, hands-on opportunities for creative play and crafting. A local author/artist will be reading from her book and sharing tales of local history. Each child will leave with a craft and a bag of goodies. Pre-registration required. Corcoran College of Art and Design 2013 Graduates, a Pop-up Exhibition For more than 120 years, the Corcoran College of Art and Design has been a leading force cultivating and driving the visual arts in the Washington metropolitan area. Their students are among the best and brightest, and their alumni number among the most distinguished artists in the canon of American art. This one-week, pop-up show invites the 2013 graduating class to take over the Brentwood Arts Exchange Gallery for experimentation and showcasing their BFA-culminating visual and performance-based art works. Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea & the Arts Celebrate spring at this fun festival for the entire family! 14th Annual Harlem Renaissance Festival The Harlem Remembrance Foundation returns for its 14th Annual Harlem Renaissance Festival. This year’s theme pays tribute to “The Great Migration: A Story of Courage and Change.” This event is a wonderful display of the rich heritage of the Harlem Renaissance era. LIVE at Montpelier! Guy Davis He’s a musician, composer, actor, director and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories and his own original works. Davis, the son of actors/writers Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis, has recorded nine studio albums with Red House Records and has appeared as a guest artist on numerous albums, videos, films and television shows. Allen Linder, Benedict Oddi, Christina Osheim Ceramic sculptor Christina Osheim, painter Benedict Oddi and sculptor/draftsman Allen Linder exhibit together for the first time. Although working in different forms and media, each artist shares sensibilities in their exploration of imagination and 21st century inheritance of early-mid 20th century surrealism. Allen Linder, widely known as a sculptor and represented by galleries across the U.S., will show recent drawings and 2-dimensional work. Benedict Oddi is the head of the Painting Department at Tennessee Technological University, and will be exhibiting in the metro area for only the second time. Christina Osheim received an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy in 2012, and is currently a studio artist at the regional visual arts powerhouse Red Dirt Studios. All ages; FREE; Brentwood Arts Exchange

Demonstration at DC Glassworks In conjunction with the exhibition at the Montpelier Arts Center, the artists at DC Glassworks and Sculpture Studios will give a live demonstration of blowing glass in the Venetian style to make contemporary pieces. Using 2,300 degree molten glass from a 600 pound furnace, watch the artist work in teams to create a variety of works in clear and color.
