School Tours College Park Aviation Museum offers a variety of educational tours which utilize our permanent exhibits and include interactive, hands-on activities to extend learning beyond the classroom, and to excite students about the history and science of flight. Our tours are designed to address grade-appropriate Common Core and Maryland educational standards, and can be modified to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities. We also offer in-class educational outreach programs. Call the museum to learn more! Janet Meetre spent 30 years in the air transportaton industry, so volunteering at the museum rekindles many great memories and experiences. She can frequently be found helping at the front desk and loves learning novel facts about the alirline industry.

Bessie Coleman broke down barriers in 1921 as the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Dressed in an authentic bomber’s jacket, boots and scarf, Dr. Daisy Century as Bessie Coleman is an exciting portrayal of a beautiful, determined woman who knew what she wanted and made it happen.

These lectures are presented by Prince George’s Audubon Society and Patuxent Bird Club in conjunction with the “Biological Flyers of College Park” exhibition. Learn something new every month about the natural world flying around us. January 13: “Vernal Pool Ecology” Karyn Molines, Division Chief, Calvert County Natural Resources Division Learn about the unique ecology of these temporary, shallow water pools that provide breeding habitats for frogs, toads, and salamanders. February 10: “Monarch Butterfly Conservation” Richard J. Dolesh, Vice President of Conservation and Parks, National Recreation and Park Association Monarch butterflies are threatened by loss of habitat, herbicide and insecticide, the disappearance of food and more. But, steps can be taken to protect and restore their populations.
March 10: “Does Tree Species Matter? The Effects of Native & Non-Native Vegetation on Food Resources for Breeding Birds” Desiree L. Narango, Research Associate at Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center Over the summers of 2013 –14 volunteers studied foraging behavior, nest success, yearly survival, and nesting growth of over 100 chickadee nests in the Washington, D.C. area. Learn the results and ways you can participate in backyard bird research. April 14: “Shorebird Identification” Michael “Mikey” Lutmerding, Breeding Bird Survey Do you have trouble telling an Eastern Willet from a Western Willet or a Short-billed Dowitcher from a Long-billed Dowitcher? Mikey will clarify points of identification through carefully chosen photos that he has taken. May 12: “Wonderful World of Whoopers” Ken Lavish, Volunteer and Environmental Education Specialist, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Join Ken Lavish as he discusses characteristics of whooping cranes, how they became so endangered, recovery efforts, and the current protocols in place to save these magnificent birds.

Our latest exhibition, “Biological Flyers of College Park,” is a collaboration between College Park Aviation Museum, M-NCPPC Park Rangers, the Prince George’s Audubon Society, and Patuxent Bird Club. This guided bird walk to Lake Artemesia and back will introduce you firsthand to the variety of species that call the airport, and nearby lake, home. Please bring your own binoculars.
Design a work of art that reflects the idea that nature inspires human innovation. Use the quote above and the Biological Flyers of College Park exhibit at the College Park Aviation Museum as starting points for your creativity.
Design a vintage style travel poster that creatively features the historical events and important figures involved in the founding of the College Park Airport. Participants are encouraged to visit the museum for inspiration and guidance in the creation of their posters. The winning posters will be professionally printed for display in the museum with small sized replicas sold through the museum shop. High quality digital files preferred and other mediums accepted.
Biological Flyers of Lake Artemesia
Saturday, April 18, 11 am–3 pm Birds of Prey Show, 12 noon Fee: $4 per person
It’s not just airplanes that fly at College Park Airport, there are plenty of animals in flight here too. Get an up close look at bees and learn how other insects mimic them. Check out the live birds in Birds of Prey and find out what behavioral and physical adaptations make them unique.
Saturday, May 9, 10 am Fee: $6 per participant
Discover 250 years of flight in a guided bicycle tour along the Anacostia River trails, from the first balloon flight in America to intriguing 20th century inventions and industry. The ride will be a flat 10 mile loop with snacks provided; some riding on quiet streets, but mostly off-road, paved trails. Bicycles and helmets are available. Persons 16 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Please call the museum in advance to register.
Engineering Challenge Series: Egg Drop Saturday, June 20, 12 noon
This year, our ever popular Egg Drop Contest is the first event in our Engineering Challenge Series. Design your own contraption to protect a large egg and bring it to the museum to see how it performs. Contraptions will be judged on egg survival, durability and creativity. Prizes will be awarded. Paper Airplane Day Sunday, June 21, 12 noon–4 pm FREE with museum admission
Build a paper airplane and test it to see how well it flies. Then, compete in our annual paper airplane derby at 3 pm.

This collaborative effort with the M-NCPPC Park Rangers, Prince George’s Audubon Society, and Patuxent Bird Club examines the flying creatures around College Park and their unique features.
