The College Park Aviation Museum offers a variety of tours for groups — whether you are looking to book a school field trip or an outing for a Senior Center or a Youth Group — we have something to offer. Our educational tours utilize our permanent exhibits as well as hands-on activities and interactives to excite participants about the history and science of flight. For school groups, tours are designed to address gradeappropriate Common Core and Maryland educational standards and can be modified to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities. Meet Our Staff MARY WOLFE started working at College Park Aviation Museum as an Educator in 2002 and is currently the Gift Shop Manager. A native of the area, Mary has lived in College Park for 42 years, has served on the swim club board, and is a neighborhood watch block captain. Previously she taught nursery school, was a 4-H leader and held several PTA offices. In her free time Mary loves to travel. She has been to all 50 states and recently spent a week in Avignon, France with family visiting small towns. An avid Maryland Terrapin fan, she has followed teams to bowl games and Final Four tournaments. At home she loves spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and entertaining.

Plane Dougie HELP US CELEBRATE the 100th Anniversary of Airmail by creating your own, globetrotting, Plane Dougie! In 1918 Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. shipped himself to New York as an airmail package. How far abroad can Plane Dougie go? Pick up a Plane Dougie at College Park Aviation Museum, take him on vacation with you, or ship him to friends far away. Post pictures of Plane Dougie’s adventures on Facebook using #PlaneDougie. The Dougie that travels the most will win a trip aboard a reenactment of the first airmail flight out of College Park Airport on August 12, 2018! Other prizes will be awarded for Most Airports Visited, Most Original Airmail Sites Visited, Northernmost Destination, and Southernmost Destination.

Blue Star Museum Program COLLEGE PARK AVIATION MUSEUM is proud to be one of more than 2,000 museums across America to offer FREE admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve and their families, from Memorial Day, May 28 through Labor Day, September 3, 2018. Blue Star Museums is a collaborative effort between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across the country.

The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty U.S. military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps—and up to five family members. Wright B Simulator Weekends 11–11:30 am, 1–1:30 pm, and 3–3:30 pm* Included with museum admission What does it take to fly a Wright Model B Aeroplane? Museum Staff will guide you through takeoff and have you cruising in no time on our simulator. *Times subject to change due to other programming and staff availability.


Cub Corner 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, 10:30 am Included with museum admission Come to the Cub Corner story time for pre-school fun! Ideal for little learners up to five years old, enjoy a flightthemed story and hands-on craft activity. For groups larger than 10, please call the museum to make a private group reservation.

The Windsock Arms Happy Hour Drinks & Activities 3rd Wednesday of the month, 5:30–7:30 pm $12 in advance, $15 at the door, includes food and two drink tickets Every month features a different theme and activity. Enjoy after-hours access to the exhibits, socialize with friends, and snack on appetizers. Sponsored by Geppetto Catering. Limited walk-in space. Reserve early! This event is for ages 21 & over only. Engineering 101 3rd Saturday of the month, 2–4 pm $5 includes museum admission & supplies Engineers are people who design and build things to solve specific problems. Learn the basics of engineering through an interactive, hands-on design challenge by creating your own design from drawing to prototype. Cycle Through Aviation History Saturday, May 12, 10 am, $6 Discover 250 years of flight in a guided bicycle tour along the Anacostia River trails, from the first balloon flight in America to 20th century inventions and industry. The ride will be a flat 10 mile loop with snacks provided; some riding on quiet streets, but mostly off-road, paved trails. Bicycles and helmets are available. Persons 16 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is required.


OpenBarre at the Museum Sunday, June 10, July 22, August 19, 2 pm $14/participant Tired of working out in a boring setting? OpenBarre brings their workout to the museum to help you lengthen your muscles and strengthen your core. Wear comfortable clothing and socks. Childcare is available for ages 3-6 for $2/child. Please RSVP for childcare by the Friday prior to the class.

Ribmaking Workshop Friday, July 13, 2 pm, $7 How were early airplanes constructed? Build your own rib for a 1909 Wright Flyer and discover the skill it took! The workshop lasts approximately 90 minutes and participants will leave with their very own wing rib. Please call to RSVP.


EXHIBITS The “Jenny” Airmail Stamps Opening May 15 The first U.S. airmail stamps featured a Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” like the aircraft on display. Learn the story of airmail through the stamps, cancellations used, and unusual items that flew.

Delivering America: Airmail to E-mail Opening August 11 100 years ago, the first airmail flight left College Park headed for New York, sparking innovations that revolutionized communication. Airmail improved aerial navigation, airplane efficiency and speed, airport design, and spawned the commercial aviation industry. Discover the rigors of being the first employees striving to deliver the mail on time and learn how Airmail united the country.

Airmail Centennial TAKE OFF WITH US IN AUGUST 2018! Friday, August 10–Sunday, August 12 College Park Airport is where the United States Post Office Department launched its Air Mail Service on August 12, 1918. Join The Field of Firsts Foundation (FOFF), the College Park Aviation Museum and College Park Airport, for our Kick-Off Weekend as we launch a celebration of the Airmail Centennial!

An Airmail Affair August 10, 7 pm; $60/ticket, $100/2 tickets Advance ticket purchase required Join us for a Barnstorming good time while enjoying the evening with our “special guest”—a Curtiss Jenny aircraft, flown in to re-enact the first airmail flight! Attendees will enjoy a first look at the new Airmail Centennial exhibit, up close access to the Curtiss Jenny, live music, great food, auction and dancing! All proceeds support the Field of Firsts Foundation and the Airmail Centennial Celebration.

On the Cover The first three airmail stamps issued in the U.S. in 1918 featured a Curtiss Jenny. On August 12th, we will celebrate 100 years of airmail by recreating the first airmail flight from College Park to New York in a Jenny.

Airmail Centennial Celebration Saturday, August 11, 10 am–4 pm; FREE Celebrate with us as we mark the 100th anniversary of the first airmail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service! Participate in engaging hands-on activities for all ages led by numerous museums, community, and aviation partners. Get an up close look at the Curtiss Jenny, and other historic planes flying in for the day. Chat with pilots and mingle with fellow aviation buffs. Bring an envelope or postcard for a special airmail cancellation. Discover the art of rib making; imagine flying an open cockpit plane while reading a map, learn about navigation, and more! Entertainment and food trucks will be onsite with food and beverages for purchase.

U.S. Airmail Flight Sendoff— Fly-in & Pancake Breakfast Sunday, August 12, 7–10 am; $10/person Savor the mysterious sense of place and join us to watch the early morning departure of the Curtiss Jenny as it takes off on a reenactment of the historic U.S.P.S. flight that took place 100 years ago. Enjoy a pancake breakfast with all the fixings, meet pilots who have flown in for the day and learn about the operational challenges of an airport so close to our Nation’s capital.
