We present yearround exhibition opportunities in a number of Department of Parks and Recreation sites, including the Prince George’s Publick Playhouse, Kentland Community Center, Watkins Nature Center, Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, Southern Area Aquatics and Recreation Center, and The Show Place Arena. The Visual Arts program also supports artists by purchasing art works, including dedicated purchase awards for our two annual countywide exhibitions. These purchases not only support artists, but also build the Department’s collection of art works by Prince George’s artists that are displayed in our public sites. Known for its comfortable, inviting space and great acoustics, the Publick Playhouse is one of the best performing arts venues in the greater Washington, D.C. area. First opened as the Cheverly Theatre in 1947, the Publick Playhouse was designed by the architectural firm of John Eberson. For many years the Cheverly, as it was known, was a neighborhood institution, the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. It had ornate sky scenes in the ceiling, plush seating for more than 900, and air conditioning.

Located on the grounds of the historic Montpelier Mansion, which dates to the 1780s, Montpelier Arts Center was built on the footprint of the original 1925 cattle barn. For more than 40 years, Montpelier Arts Center has been a complete arts destination, offering exhibitions, classes, performances, and studios. The Arts Center houses three galleries, professional artists studios, a metal casting facility, gas and electric-fired kilns, a digital lab, and classrooms. It also offers an extensive class and workshop program in the visual and literary arts for children to adults, beginners to advanced. Cultural events in both the visual and performing arts are offered throughout the year as well.

Conveniently located less than one-half mile from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and close to I-495, the Publick Playhouse serves as a popular venue for music and modern dance, musical theater, historical drama, educational programs, and monthly events for seniors. The Publick Playhouse is pleased to present the GEICO Gecko Series, a series of midweek matinees for youth generously supported by the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation. To learn more, see page 87.

BRENTWOOD ARTS EXCHANGE

CLASSES

FINE CRAFT STORE

Perhaps the best way to experience art is by making it. Whether you are 6 years old, or 60+, and whether you are using traditional media or working in our new computer lab, we have classes to get your creative juices flowing. Classes change each season, so check online at arts.pgparks.com for the current listing of youth camps, Kids’ Day Out events, teen film and architecture programs, drawing classes, and more.

The Fine Craft Store at the Brentwood Arts Exchange has become a shopping and giftbuying staple of the Gateway Arts District. Featuring a constantly evolving lineup of craft and functional art by more than 40 local artists, everything from ceramics to jewelry, leather, glass, woodworking, and more are offered. The Craft Store is a great place to find unique items and support the local creative economy by keeping money in the community.

EXHIBITIONS

MUSIC

At the core of the Brentwood Arts Exchange programs are its two contemporary art galleries. The 2,500-square-foot Main Gallery presents a broad range of exhibitions focusing on the best work by early–mid-career artists in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore region. The 800-square-foot Lab Gallery, which doubles as an event space, supports artists by encouraging new approaches to two-dimensional work and presenting solo exhibitions by artists who are creating exceptional work. Additionally, our Fine Craft Store hosts a mini-exhibition front window feature, presenting small sculptures and highquality craft work.

LISTENING ROOM CONCERT SERIES Entering its fifth year in 2019-2020, the Listening Room offers a rare opportunity to experience live music in an intimate gallery setting. Our concert series thrives on its eclectic lineup, featuring acts that range from Americana to rap, classical quartets, Japanese Koto, bossa nova, free jazz, indie rock, and any other genre in which local bands are making great music— which is just about every genre. Past acts have included Koyaki Issa, Sligo Creek Stompers, Olivia Mancini, and even a rare, small-setting appearance by Dom Flemons. Stay up to date at arts.pgparks.com.

FILMS The Brentwood Arts Exchange presents several short, thematic series of film screenings each year focusing on heritage celebrations and current social topics important to the arts. The Brentwood Arts Exchange works with local film curators and subject experts to find films that audiences may have little chance to see elsewhere. Past film series have focused on the U.S.–Mexico Border (“Afrofuturism”) and looked into everyday life across the cultures of the Arabic world. The 2019-2020 season is titled “The Art House,” focusing on films crossing different genres and generations that did not conform to mainstream norms but still resonate through the span of time.

SONIC FRONTIERS: EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC SERIES This new music series taking place in the fall and spring will ask you to expand your mind and soul with a diverse and eclectic mix of sight and sound. Sonic Frontiers presents an exploration of experimental and improvised performances arranged by local musicians and groups in the DMV. From electroacoustic -ambient sound meditations to explorations in modular synthesis, with maybe a little cowbell thrown in, this concert series will be worth checking out.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart: Myths

of Black Motherhood by Deirdre Darden

In celebration of Black History Month, Curator Deirdre Darden has assembled a thoughtful and poignant group exhibition examining the multilayered dichotomy of the African American woman as it relates to motherhood and identity through the fabric of the American landscape. The term “cold hands and a warm heart” is explained as appearing stern on the outside while being truly tender from within. Throughout history, black women have often been accused of carrying an intimidating, angry, or stern appearance, while simultaneously being labeled as nurturing, mothering figures. This exhibition, composed of a diverse collection of artists using different art-making methods, examines this double consciousness that black people, in particular, black women, experience.

Layers: Cause and

Effect by Maria Gabriela Mizes Hickey

The use of layers in images threads a connection between many traditions, from painting to map-making, to infographic timelines. Overlapping shapes and lines are sometimes used to associate different levels of data, allowing them to contribute to the whole while maintaining their own identity. In the visual art process, layers can convey a myriad of visual, emotional, and aesthetic responses. This vibrant group exhibition features artists Alexandra Arata, Cheryl Edwards, Amani Lewis, and Maritza Sosaya. All of the artists use different forms of layering in creating their work, each employing their own methods to develop unique and distinctive outcomes.

Moving Forward

Brentwood Arts Exchange first opened on March 19, 2009, with a group exhibition composed of the talented artists of the Gateway Arts District. In a decade, those artists have evolved into giants of the greater Maryland arts community. The Gateway Arts District has gained national attention and Brentwood Arts Exchange has become the anchor and an institution for this influential collective. In celebration of this milestone, we have decided to move forward instead of looking back by exhibiting a fresh group of artists in the district who are redefining and trailblazing on the foundation to which they now belong. Please join us as we move into the future!

.superpositions. by Jeremy Flick

Jeremy Flick applies a highly controlled approach and adapts minimalist strategies to compose paintings that have a rigorous sensitivity to abstraction and color. Flick abandons the traditional rectangular frame in favor of irregularly shaped canvases to offer a skewed, but methodical aesthetic. Divergent shapes of opaque, intuited color appear to be transparent to create overlapping boundaries, causing symmetry and asymmetry, resulting in harmonious, precise, and meticulously balanced compositions.

Playing to WIN by Aziza Claudia Gibson-Hunter

The Architect’s Dream by Carson Murdach

Aziza Claudia Gibson-Hunter’s methodical mixed media assemblages comment on the destructive nature of competition and how it relates to our contemporary society. “The question of how one wins and why can be essential to understanding the collective character of a country or that of a single individual. Can the goal of “winning” become so significant that it can become a blinding force? Using motifs from classic board games, as well as lotto tickets, playing cards, and game-related quotes, images were created while pondering the implications of the phrase “playing to WIN.”

This ambitious and obsessive series of drawings investigates the cyclical nature of history through a sprawling imagined landscape. Depictions of cookie-cutter homes and monumental buildings engulf the terrain and create a landscape of their own. Patterns and structure turn into chaos as the work narrates cautionary tales of humanity’s pattern of civilization. Among all this adversity, rather than wallow in nostalgia and regret, The Architect’s Dream directs us to a potentially disastrous endgame and a need for balance.

Noir Auteur: Curated by Dawne Langford

Xactli Xperience, a hip-hop, R&B, jazz, funk, rock ‘n’ roll, folk music, and duo culminated their sound in the DMV. Founding members Devin Robinson (Patrick-Jerome) and Samoris Hall (EZ Gustow) met in the halls of Howard University’s School of Music. Musical Play:

Missoula Children’s Theatre’s “Robinson Crusoe” Purposely varying from the plot of Daniel Defoe’s novel, Missoula Children’s Theatre’s “Robinson Crusoe” teaches the lesson that reading invites more than observation. We arrive on Robinson’s island years after he and his sole companion, a goat named “Wilson”, are shipwrecked. We find that the island has turned into a tourist destination centered around a lovable singing leopard, a tribe of natives known for their colorful coifs, Friday’s Seaside Resort, and, of course, the legendary Robinson Crusoe. In a flashback, his story comes to life beginning with the shipwreck, which marooned him and Wilson on the island. The entire population of the island, including a herd of goats, an all-animal band, Friday and his family, and the inevitable hula-dancing chameleons, discovers that our differences need not stand in the way of our friendships. All of the characters live happily and harmoniously ever after.

René Treviño: Gran Fury

Mexican-American and gay artist René Treviño is a Baltimore-based painter whose work explores history and identity. Treviño drove a 1987 Plymouth Gran Fury when he first moved to Baltimore in 2003. Gran Furies were often police cruisers in the 1980s. The name of the car came from Greek mythology: the Furies, goddesses of vengeance. An art/activist collective also known as Gran Fury used a combination of bold graphic design, guerrilla dissemination tactics, and art institutional support to communicate the urgency of the AIDS epidemic in light of disastrous government and political inaction. They are probably best known for the SILENCE = DEATH graphic that came to define the AIDS/HIV activist movement in the 1980s and early 1990s. This exhibit showcases paintings of Oreo cookies, the Gran Fury logo, star fields, and Mayan walls.

Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition: Reflections of Self

Throughout time, artists have been skilled practitioners of self-reflection and introspection by constantly developing and analyzing a growing awareness of their self. This year’s county-juried exhibition highlights the variety of artistic thought processes and ideas that artists use to create solutions to their own struggles with self-reflection. *This year’s work was selected by Mr. John Coppola, who served as Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Exhibits Central, providing design, production, and installation services to the national museum complex. He was appointed by President Obama to the National Museum and Library Services Board. Coppola has organized and managed exhibitions for the Museum of Latin American Art, the Smithsonian Latino Center, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, and major international exhibitions such as “Isamu Noguchi: What Is Sculpture?” at the Venice Biennale and “An American Century: Three Generations of Wyeth Art” in the Soviet Union. He recently co-curated a 30-year retrospective of Peruvian photographer Lorry Salcedo.

APRIL 4–26, 2020

Public Reception: Saturday, November 9, 3–5 pm

Public Reception: Sunday, April 5, 2–4 pm

Sahomi Naka is a printmaker who mixes new and traditional techniques to create a safe and healthy printmaking process. Naka allows the materials to help her create the image; she collaborates with the medium rather than trying to force it towards “unnatural” perfection. Her prints capture fleeting moments of life and nature and portray the beauty of people and the world.

In her exhibition, Bao-Yen Nguyen explores the effects of the Vietnam War through a socio-ethnic lens and how the country’s past connects to the Americanized present. Having been born after the war, she never recognized the effect the war had on her life. Lacking perspective and understanding of the war and its impact on Vietnamese American contemporary life, she uses photojournalism and art to stimulate dialogue between the two periods: past and present. Nguyen strives to portray a narrative that reflects the impact of the war through a combination of digital manipulation and a more traditional process.

David Brosch: Recent Work by a Printmaker

David Brosch has focused most of his artistic efforts in the last few years on producing monochromatic and full-color etchings and linocuts using fairly traditional techniques. This show will include limited edition hand-pulled prints and some of the plates and blocks from which the plates were pulled. The viewer will see how full-color prints are the result of multiple press runs and will see the intermediate stages of each artwork. The show will have a preponderance of landscapes, but there will be other subject matter that has inspired Brosch. David Brosch also teaches printmaking at Montpelier Arts Center.

Melissa Burley

Barry Goldstein

Life, humanity, and the human condition are phrases that resonate with sculptor Barry Goldstein. Goldstein digs deeply to uncover what matters in life. In his search, he uses the artistic process as a path of exploration and inquiry into life and relationships. His work responds to the thoughts and feelings erupting from the relationships to narrative and circumstance. He knocks on the door of relationship in the hope of finding heart versus emptiness within. Goldstein’s art is a voice wondering what of life and our world is genuine and of substance and what is as empty as cotton candy.

Melissa Burley combines reclaimed items that may include glass, test tubes, furniture parts, clocks, bicycle components, and resin and illuminates them with LED lighting. The ultimate goal is to express one’s existence on this earth and to elevate these materials of the past to a level that suggests there is beauty in life after death.

Baum has performed alongside artists such as George Russell, Randy Brecker, Donald Brown, Mick Goodrick, Tom Harrell, and Kenny Barron. Baum, known for her award-winning septet that features her globally-influenced, increasingly complex and long-form compositions, formed Short Stories to complement and expand her palette. With an emphasis on improvisation, Baum’s inspiration came from the short but eloquent, harmonic and motivically packed compositions by such jazz icons as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. Combined with the excitement and drive of the modern jazz standard, Baum strives to compose or arrange “short stories” that set the tone for this unique instrumentation and a top-flight group of musicians. Come enjoy an evening of short stories with Jamie Baum. Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members and seniors

Nipun Manda:

Wayson R. Jones: Works

Wayson R. Jones is a 2-D artist that creates using a variety of materials including paints, pastels, canvas, paper, and wood. Much of his work is influenced by the ’50/’60s TV and movies of his childhood. His monochromatic works are stark and show a deep contrast between solid black and blinding white hues. The presence of his works is weighed by their scale, texture, and use of contrast. His pieces in this format are typically divided horizontally and filled with various gels, pigments, or other materials in a spontaneous and often reductive way that build up the composition. His work, while often abstract in form, also embodies elemental themes such as the earth, sky, planets, or bodies that seek to evoke the vastness and wonder of the world.

City Lights

Nipun Manda is an artist who works in a number of media. He incorporates visual, emotional, and psychological impressions of urban tension, raw emotions, and harsh realities tempered with gentle optimism and beauty. He uses emotion, inspiration of nature, and mankind to become living imagery in a joy of whimsical transformations. His abstract Expressionism often contains the spontaneous act of aesthetics and artistic expression of inner and outer spaces.

Small Tales:

Janet Matthews is a photographer who explores psychological themes through evocative still life and landscape images. Her background in drawing and painting has influenced her approach to photography, as she often incorporates hands-on methods into her work. Her Vignettes and Small Anxieties series places small figures in images based on both personal experience and metaphorical situations that allow the viewer to use their imagination to interpret the scene.

Ternion: Painting on Nico Gozal creates 2-D works using handpainted silks that fuse his Indonesian ancestry with the culture of America. Three different series will be presented together to show Gozal’s range of subject matter within the medium. Each painting is delicate and intricate, sometimes also having a fluid or sculptural quality on the surface as well. Other influences of his work include the music and languages of the world. He hopes to stimulate and draw out personal experiences and responses from his viewers while also transcending boundaries of race, language, culture, religion, and ethnicity.
