FALL 2020 | September 1 – November 30

to Parks and Recreation Classes, Programs, and Events

GREETINGS, EVERYONE! I am thrilled to serve as the new director of the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County — the best agency in the land and THE six-time Gold Medal award winner for excellence. The legendary football coach, Vince Lombardi said, “It is time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever – the one who recognizes the challenge and does something about it.” This pandemic has presented all of us with moments unseen in a generation. We met the challenge by remaining a reliable rock solidly unmoved in its nature. For 50 years, the Department has been committed to enriching lives, conserving lands, and creating legacies. Part of this rich tradition is remaining true to our mission and vision — providing comprehensive park and recreation programs, facilities, and services, which respond to the changing needs within our communities.

How have we continued to keep this commitment in such unprecedented times? A combination of out-of-the-box thinking and exceptional staff talent has allowed us to remodel our programming and pivot to live more, play more…indoors. For example: Our one-stop shop Online Resource Center features videos for fun and fitness. You can discover activities for youth, sharpen your sports skills, as well as explore the arts, nature and history. Over these past several months, stay-at-home fun blossomed with our virtual… • Summer Clubhouses for youth to engage in creative activities and to replace in-person summer camps • Juneteenth celebration — a community favorite held virtually this year that featured panel discussions, musical performances, dance workshops, virtual cooking, and more for dozens of online participants • Concerts from artists’ homes and at our Historic Venues properties • Beltway BBQ cooking demonstrations with prominent grill masters • Gaming tournament, which was held online for Prince George’s County residents

In our proud tradition of capturing extraordinary moments, we welcomed to our College Park Airport the first armless pilot — Jessica Cox. This July special event was part of a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the 80th anniversary of the Ercoupe airplane, which was manufactured in Riverdale, Maryland. Summer found us hitting the airwaves with the launch of Play More TV, now airing weekdays on Bowie State University Television (BSU-TV, Comcast 74 and Verizon 43). This special media project is keeping citizens actively connected with us for recreation and education from the comfort of their homes. Valuing public opinion, we heard your voice through Open Town Hall master plan surveys on the future of Cedar Heights Community Center and Walker Mill Regional Park. We shared updates on changes in your neighborhoods through our Coffee and Chat series with members of the Prince George’s County Council. Young people also found a safe space to speak their mind about current events as we hosted a virtual Youth Speaks Crisis Cool Down. Since the beginning of this COVID crisis, we always kept our parks and trails open to encourage exercise and to provide a chance to get fresh air. As state mandates allowed, the Department gradually reopened some of our outdoor amenities including pools, golf courses, playgrounds, and tennis courts. This has been a satisfying recess from home life. We responded to the most basic of human needs – hunger – by providing free Grab ‘N Go meals for youth, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. We expanded Grab ‘N Go to provide plants, STEAM activity kits and recreation-leisure materials to support the power of play.

Devoted to the County, our collaborations for public awareness health and civic campaigns became vital to the community including project alliances with: Nonprofit Prince George’s County, Amerigroup, and Census 2020. A big applause for our Department’s park police, park rangers, maintenance, custodial, and childcare staff on the front line providing top notch services to keep us safe, as well as a smoothly running Commission. These samples of what the Department has been able to accomplish in service to you, in the midst of a public health crisis, is why we are THE premiere parks and recreation agency. Truly, we are all in this together. Kicking off this fall season, I would like to be one of the firsts to invite you, your friends, and family to the Department’s awaiting assortment of virtual and outdoor activities. They are found right here in Your Guide to Parks and Recreation. Visit pgparks.com as well for a tour of our additional wellness opportunities. We look forward to serving you and our communities this season as we continue to pursue greatness every day! Health & Happiness,

Bill Tyler, Director

It’s our birthday!

FIFTY YEARS AGO – JULY 1, 1970 – the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County merged with The MarylandNational Capital Park and Planning Commission and a new standard for county life was born. The icing on our birthday cake was inheriting seven, lively community centers already in use by patrons. That same year, our first nature center opened. We have come a long way and have grown tremendously while remaining true to our initial mission. Our mission is to provide “…comprehensive park and recreation programs, facilities, and services which respond to changing needs within our communities…to preserve, enhance, and protect our open spaces to enrich the quality of life for present and future generations in a safe and secure environment.” Impossible to capture five decades of excitement on these pages, we invite you to explore our website at pgparks.com to see how we live more, play more in reshaping Prince George’s County and its residents.

Resident Registration and Fees The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission policy gives priority to Prince George’s County residents during program and class enrollment; it also increases registration fees by approximately 30 percent for non-residents, or those living outside Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. This procedure ensures that the citizens who fund these programs through their tax dollars have the first option to enroll. After the priority registration period, registrations are accepted from residents of all jurisdictions. The fee schedule applies to all Commission programs and facilities in Prince George’s County, with a few exceptions such as performance tickets and historic site admission fees. *Note: Full payment is due at registration unless a class or program has a scheduled payment structure i.e. Kids’ Care, Trips & Excursions. Need help? Email the Customer Service Help Desk at CustomerService@pgparks.com.

Understanding Digital Media

Dissecting Design

Our family photos and memories are all going digital. What does that mean for us and our kids? Students will take a comprehensive overview of the state of our digital world. Production, consumption, preservation, sharing, and the, sometimes, thorny issues of legal jeopardy plus online privacy will be discussed. Become a savvy online consumer and user. Learn and practice some of the important techniques of the new online age.

This class plumbs the depths of creative inspiration focusing on harnessing ideas and starting points for making art. Our sessions incorporate discussion, visual aids, and exercises to engage the senses in the act of design. Writing, drawing, painting, collage, and other techniques will be used to create pieces of art to express individual creative ideas. Students will complete at least one piece and have a handmade book to record ideas. See PARKS DIRECT receipt for supply list. An electronic device with audio and camera is preferred.

Although it looks complicated, a diaper cake is a lot easier to create than you might think. Hispanic Heritage Month Film and Book Discussion Julia Alverez’s stories embrace her Dominican heritage at the same time they open up the paradox of straddling two cultures. Born in the United States but taken back to the Dominican Republic until she was ten years old, she experienced re-entry to America as linguistically challenged and surrounded by a loving family and wider Dominican community. Driven to tell stories from childhood on, she launched herself toward a writing career. Seven novels, three poetry collections plus numerous non-fiction and children’s books later, she is a Latina author of note. Join Dr. Karen Arnold to read and discuss In the Time of the Butterflies and view the movie, which brings it to life. The story relates the brutal imprisonment and deaths of the Mirabel sisters during Trujillo’s repressive regime that raised the simmering revolutionary movement to its explosive height. Women’s power to alter history, cultural identity in two worlds, personal growth, and perseverance make Alvarez’s work compelling, intimate, and sometimes funny. She opens a door to understanding each other in a time when this conversation is so important in American life. An email with questions to consider while watching the film and reading the book will be emailed out a week before the first session. Please read and watch the film prior to attending. A Microsoft Teams link will be emailed out the day before the discussion. customerservice@pgparks.com

One Maryland, One Book Discussion: The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

Join us for a girls empowerment event.

Each year, Montpelier Arts Center partners with Maryland Humanities to host a One Maryland, One Book discussion. The Island of Sea Women is this year’s stimulating read by Lisa See. The book chronicles the lives of two girls, Young-sook and Mi-ja, who are living on the Korean island, Jeju. Through marked differences on family lineage, the two friends seem inseparable. Based during the Japanese occupation of the 1930s and 1940s, World War II and through the Korean War, their friendship is tested to a breaking point. Read the book and join us for a lively and engaging discussion! Sign up on Eventbrite (insert link). Please read the book prior to attending. A limited number of books are available free of charge. A Microsoft Teams link will be emailed out the day before the discussion. Email sara.morgan@pgparks.com with any questions or for a copy of the book.
