Arts at Montpelier Since 1980, the center has been delivering exceptional entertainment,

inspiring thousands of individuals through its arts exhibitions, musical performances, classes and camps. The tradition continues this year as we introduce Live!

At Montpelier Arts Center. As you will discover in this brochure, Live! represents a full season of new and exciting art programs. Saturday morning family programs, master workshops, and informative sessions about Montpelier resident artists are among the list of new programs. The individual Jazz and Folk and Blues series has been combined into a full music series, from which you can customize your own series. We’ve even invited some of your favorites back for an encore performance! Thank you for taking the time to read the information in this brochure. Montpelier Arts Center, a multi-faceted, communityoriented, facility has been a complete arts destination offering exhibitions, classes, performances, and residences for more than 30 years. Sixteen professional artists maintain open studio hours for the public 10 am–5 pm daily, seven days a week. Three galleries present changing exhibitions of local and national artists in a variety of media and styles. Concerts present nationally recognized artists in a quaint, intimate setting. Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow September 7 – October 26 Public Reception: Friday, September 7, 7– 9 pm Artist Talk: Friday, September 7, 6 pm An exhibition of recent paintings by Washington, D.C. professional artists Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow. Ellyn and Sesow are known Ellyn internationally for their colorful, expressive interpretations of politics and pop culture. With this exhibit, the local artists take aim with their paintbrushes at the lexicon of “See Something, Say Something” and how it has changed the American zeitgeist. sesow

Bowie State University Art Faculty Exhibition November 2–28 Public Reception: Friday, November 2, 7– 9 pm Artists who teach at the Bowie State University Art Department will participate in a group show featuring their latest works.

Patuxent Art League Juried Exhibition December 6–30 Public Reception: Sunday, December 9, 2–4 pm Juried by a regional professional, this exhibit showcases work from artists who are 18 years and older and live in Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia, and includes painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, collage and more.

Demonstration at DC Glassworks Friday, June 21, 6:30 –8:30 pm at DC Glassworks 5346 46th Avenue, Hyattsville MD The artists at DC Glassworks and Sculpture studios will give a live demonstration of blowing glass in the Venetian style to make contemporary pieces. Using 2,300 degree molten glass from a 600 pound furnace, watch the artists work in teams to create a variety of works in clear and color. Beverages will be provided.

Cedric Williams, Mixed Media November 2–December 26 Public Reception: Friday, November 2, 7– 9 pm Through mixed media collages, the artist observes the ways in which buildings, surfaces, and structures change upon abandonment.

Outloud Artists, Abstract Painters March 9 – April 26 Public Reception: Sunday, March 10, 2– 4 pm Artist Talk: Sunday, March 10, 1 pm These 12 artists create acrylic paintings and collages in non-representational, intuitive abstract styles.

Jonathan West, Installation/Sculpture June 7–August 18 Public Reception: Friday, June 14, 7 – 9 pm In response to human interaction in advances of technology, the artist creates paintings that are sometimes uncomfortable or horrific. These paintings are sympathetic yet striking and provoke thought and compassion.

Irene Sylvester September 7–28 Public Reception: Friday, September 7, 7– 9 pm Through the representation of a bird and woman, the artist creates collages that reference the passing of time and placement in the universe.

Alonzo Davis October 5–26 Public Reception: Sunday, October 7, 2–4 pm Artist Talk/Open Studio: Saturday, October 13 & Sunday, October 14, 2–3 pm Using bamboo as a framework, the artist’s “kites” make reference to flight, celebration of the seasons, and travel that highlight many cultures. Mr. Davis created this exhibition with the collaboration of Jessica Beels, Bob Donahue, Kay Lindsey, Patricia Steck, and Lynn Sylvester.

Kite Making Workshop Saturday, October 20, 11 am –1 pm Participants will make a basic kite with bamboo and decorative paper. Examples will be provided through websites, books, and the current kite exhibition in the Resident Artist Gallery. Kites may or may not fly but will be wonderful pieces of art. Ages 10 and over. Steven Williams November 2-25 Public Reception: Friday, November 2, 7– 9 pm Using acrylic paint, found objects, and images on “masonite” or hardboard, the artist constructs paintings that draw from surrealism and abstraction.

Current Resident Artist Group Show December 3–28 Resident artists will showcase their work in this group exhibition, highlighting their diversity and talent.

Jacqueline Lee April 5 – 30 Public Reception: Sunday, April 7, 2 –4 pm Combining a love of collage with a passion for quilting, this artist creates collage quilts that revolve around figurative compositions.

Judith Kornett May 2– June 26 Reception: Friday, June 14, 7 – 9 pm Ceramic figurative sculpture that is wood and raku fired draws an emphasis on texture, color, and detail with psychological and humorous undertones.

Sharon Clark Quintet Washington, D.C. jazz vocalist Sharon Clark has brought festival and concert audiences to their feet across the U.S. and Europe. A winner of the Gold Medal and $10,000 top prize at the Savannah Music Festival’s American Traditions Competition, Ms. Clark has headlined the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, the historic Lincoln Theater, and the Cape May Jazz Festival. She has appeared with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and has performed by invitation for President William Jefferson Clinton. Charles Covington Trio Charles Covington is an American jazz bebop pianist and one of the finest jazz bop pianists on the east coast. He is currently a professor of jazz piano at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He has been a featured performer for President Carter at the White House and with George Benson on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Covington’s career includes celebrity performances with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr., Eartha Kitt, and Larry King among others. He has also performed in concert with Sonny Stitt, Milt Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Shirley Horn, and Chuck Berry. Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members & seniors

Dixieland Direct Jazz Band Fashioned after the Swing and Dixieland styles of Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain, Dixieland Direct features Henning Hoehne on clarinet, Bob Boguslaw on piano, Dallas Smith on bass, and Mike Flaherty on drums. The members of the group come from the United States military band traditions. Along with being featured on numerous recordings, members of Dixieland Direct have been featured at major jazz festivals, and have toured extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Broto Roy Ensemble Broto Roy, an EMI-India recording artist and two-time National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant recipient, was born into a prominent musical family in Calcutta, India and is a highly regarded tabla player and percussionist. With stalwart appearances with local and national jazz luminaries including Paul Bollenback, organist Joey DeFrancesco, and saxophonist Ron Holloway, he has developed a unique brand of Indian influenced jazz fusion, and Indian classical music and jazz. In addition to his original works appearing on CNN and the NASA Channel, Roy has performed all over the world and has recorded music with musicians including Grateful Dead member Bob Weir and Jeff Watts of Branford Marsalis fame. Paul Bollenback George Benson described Paul Bollenback’s style of jazz guitar as “…bona-fide playing, unambiguous, up-front and powerful,” and called him “a versatile dynamo on guitar.” He has played with everyone from Mel Torme to Herb Ellis to Stanley Turrentine. He began a long time career on television bands appearing on the Tonight Show, Entertainment Tonight, and the Today Show. Paul Bollenback is a highly sought after guitar teacher in New York and tours regularly with jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco. Tickets: $25/person; 10% discount for Montpelier members & seniors

Davey and Esther Audience favorites, recording artists and composers, Davey Yarborough and wife Esther Williams bring their soulful blend of jazz and original song writing to the Montpelier stage. Well steeped in the local and national music scene, their performances include dates at the Kennedy Center, the Savoy in New York and they have performed by invitation at the White House. Larry Willis Quartet Larry Willis is an American jazz pianist and composer. Throughout his career, he has performed with a wide range of musicians, including a stint of seven years as keyboardist for Blood, Sweat & Tears (beginning in 1972), and as a pianist for Nat Adderley and Roy Hargrove. Willis’ great interest in music has enabled him to play everything from jazz fusion and rock to bebop and avant-garde. In 2011, he received the Don Redman Heritage Award, followed by the Benny Golson Jazz Master Award at Howard University in 2012. Coniece Washington Fans describe Coniece Washington as a vocalist who sings from her heart. One can hear the passion and emotion of the song’s lyrics in her singing. Her musical style is influenced by Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Billy Holiday, Carmen McRae and numerous gospel artists. Jim Cullum Septet The Jim Cullum Jazz Band has been swingin’ away on the Riverwalk since 1963. They have played prestigious jazz festivals across the United States and have toured Europe, Latin America, and Australia. The band has played at Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center, and has also appeared on 45 record albums. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band’s Public Radio series, Riverwalk, Live from the Landing, is produced at the Landing Jazz Club and airs on over 200 stations in the United States. Odean Pope Philadelphia saxophone legend Odean Pope integrates several musical influences —including the church choir of his youth, Philadelphia jazz and R&B of the 1950s, and classical woodwind chamber music — to create a sound all his own. Guy Davis He’s a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis’ creativity. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original works. Davis, the son of actors/writers Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis, has recorded nine studio albums with Red House Records and has appeared as a guest artist on numerous albums, videos, films and television shows. Andy McKee Andy McKee is one of the world’s finest acoustic guitar soloists. Having shot to worldwide prominence with his technically astounding Drifting, he has since received over 200 million plays on YouTube alone. At one point he held the number 1, 2 and 3 position for their “Top-Rated Videos of All Time” category. However, McKee’s online success is no gimmick; as a live musician he performs over 200 shows a year worldwide, has independently released five studio albums, and has been awarded the Acoustic Guitar Magazine worldwide silver medal award for fingerstyle. Dukes of Bluegrass Bluegrass has its roots in celtic folk music, but has become a musical genre that covers a vastly diverse pool of musicians. Jonny Grave Jonny Grave is a guitarist, songwriter, singer, bandleader, busker, teacher, musical historian, and Bluesman from Washington D.C. Burnside, Kenny Brown and Mississippi Fred McDowell, Grave plays a grooving, rhythmic blend of traditional blues and primitive rock ‘n’ roll. Rhythms and Rhymes for Wise Young Minds David Foreman, aka ‘Jali-D,’ is an accomplished percussionist and spoken word artist who simultaneously combines his talents into an art form he calls “Rappercussions.” His intelligent and creative rhymes have entertained and educated both children and adults nationwide. Along with his work in schools, Jali-D has recorded an educational music CD called “Mind Rhymes,” and has written a score for an FDA/Cartoon Network health campaign. Tickets: $5/person

Black History Month Exhibition Fighting on Two Fronts: Black Military Service in the United States January 16– February 26 Public Reception: Sunday, February 3, 2 –4 pm This exhibition highlights African American service and support of the U.S. Military from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War. During this two hundred year period, African Americans have fought, worked and sacrificed in support of their country. Dinner and a Movie The theme of the 2012-2013 film series is Great Literature in Film. Dinner is served at 6 pm immediately followed by the screening of the film. To make the night even more memorable, dinner is matched to some aspect of the film. ❚ Tickets for both dinner and the film are $30/person, and must be purchased by 12 noon on the Friday immediately preceding the Saturday screening. ❚ Film only tickets are available for $15/person on the day of the screening. Seating is limited and film only tickets may not always be available. ❚ Seniors (ages 60 & up) and Montpelier Arts Center members receive a 10% discount. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated and throws himself into hundreds of romances over the years all while his heart is reserved for her. Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird This documentary illuminates the phenomenon behind Lee’s first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the 1962 film version. Offering an unprecedented look into Lee’s mysterious life, Emmy®-winning filmmaker Mary McDonagh Murphy interviews Lee’s friends and family, who share intimate recollections, anecdotes and biographical details for the first time: her rise from small-town Alabama girl to famous author, her tumultuous friendship with Truman Capote, and the origin of her most memorable characters. This tale of 19th-century etiquette and ethics chronicles the troubles and triumphs of the marriage-minded Dashwood sisters—sensible, oldest sibling Elinor and her romantic, younger sister Marianne (Kate Winslet). While Marianne deftly charms two suitors (Alan Rickman and Greg Wise), Elinor must weather a circuitous courtship with an aspiring clergyman (Hugh Grant) of considerable reserve. Classical Recitals All recitalists are winners of the 2010/11 Classical Recital Competition. This year’s winners were chosen by Tom Hall, musical director of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Chia-Jui Lee, Flute Chia-Jui Lee, a native of Taiwan, was a first-prize winner of the Taipei Young Artist Competition for two consecutive years, and also the winner of the National Wind Quintet Competition in Taiwan. As a freelancer now, she performs Piazzolla’s Tango Etude for Flute and Piano in this year’s National Flute Association Convention in New York, NY. Brett Miller, French Horn Brett Miller, who plays French horn for the Apollo, has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, as well as, the U.S. Air Force Band for eight years. He frequently performs with his brass quintet, Brass Mosaic. A review by the International Horn Society calls him “a highly creative soul” and a “joy to hear.” Brett received his doctor of musical arts in horn performance from the University of Maryland. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio Currently Ensemble-in-Residence for Washington D.C’s Embassy Series, the Mendelssohn Piano Trio is one of the most exciting ensembles on the national and international music scene. Pianist Ya-Ting Chang is from Taiwan; violinist Peter Sirotin is from Russia; and cellist Fiona Thompson is from England. The Washington Post has described the group’s Brahms cycle of piano trios and piano quartets presented by the Embassy Series as “unfathomably beautiful,” “transcendent” and “electrifying.”

Using the advanced search feature allows you to search for classes that begin in a selected date range. The following are a sampling of classes and workshops that are offered at Montpelier. Art & Astronomy: A Stroll through the Solar System Saturday, October 13, 10 am – 2 pm, #1021615 Artists, writers and musicians through the ages have fallen under the spell of objects in the sky and the mysteries of outer space. This workshop uses a simulated walk through space as a springboard for creative writing and drawing. Following the walk, (on Montpelier grounds), participants will write and draw about the experience. Ages 10 and over

Audio Recording, Level 1 Workshop Saturday, September 8, 10 am – 4 pm, #927721 An introduction to audio recording. Students will be introduced to recording software, basic editing techniques, and how to operate audio connection hardware. Ages 15 and over

Audio Recording, Level 2 Workshop Saturday, September 15, 10 am – 4 pm, #927722 Explore multi-tracking, a basic run-down on the use of processing and effects, and mixing multiple tracks down to a final 2-track master. Glass: Fusing for Jewelry, Beginning Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23, 10 am – 3 pm, #927751 Make up to five glass pendants, pins, buttons, or earrings as you learn the basics of glass fusing. Use colored glass components to assemble pieces, and then learn how to fire them in a small kiln. All materials will be supplied by the instructor for a $20 fee. Watercolor: Master Workshop with Christine Neill Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4, 10 am –4 pm, #927780 Christine Neill has had numerous solo shows in the United States and France. She has won a Maryland State Arts Council Fellowship and the Mellon Arts Grant. She is a professor of painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. New: Open Studio Drawing Thursdays, January 17–February 21, 7 – 9 pm and Sundays, January 27–February 3, 1 – 3 pm This is the perfect opportunity to practice your skills at your own pace in your choice of media, with access to a live nude model. Artists are required to bring their own drawing materials. Pre-registration is recommended as space is limited. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available. Montpelier Arts Center has resident artists that work in a diverse variety of media and styles. All are professional artists and several teach Montpelier’s classes and programs. Artists work in their studios throughout the week and can be visited by groups or individuals interested in purchasing their work, or learning more about the artistic process. On a revolving basis, artists exhibit their work in the center’s Resident Artist Gallery.

Jurying for Studio Space Montpelier Arts Center, located on the beautiful grounds of the Montpelier Mansion in Laurel, Maryland, has three galleries, classrooms and studios for artists. Studios vary in size and are rented to qualified artists at a very cost effective rate. Resident artists who have studios at Montpelier are also eligible for solo exhibitions in the Resident Artists Gallery on a rotating basis and have access to the studios seven days a week. Montpelier holds an annual jury for studio space at the arts center. Continue on Route 197 (Laurel-Bowie Road) to Crystal Plaza Shopping Center/Muirkirk Road. Turn left onto Muirkirk Road; Montpelier Arts Center Drive is first right.
