Dance Party: The Teenarama Story Narrated by Motown recording artist Martha Reeves of Martha and The Vandellas, this Emmy-award winning documentary examines television’s teen dance phenomenon of the 1950s and ’60s. During that time, African American teens often were excluded or given ‘separate but unequal’ treatment by shows like American Bandstand. That all changed in 1963 when a small television station in Washington, D.C. launched a dance program geared specifically to black teenagers. Often called the precursor of Soul Train, the Teenarama Dance Party ran six days a week for seven years, and became the longest running African American teen dance show of the 1960s. Dance Party captures the Teenarama era through archival footage, photography, period re-enactments and interviews with series regulars and performers, including James Brown. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmaker. Tickets: $5/person Su nday, November 24 , 20 13, 1 pm

Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard

Directed by Bryan Reichhardt, Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard highlights extraordinary stories of war-ravaged children who faced the truly unbelievable tragedy of World War II with unfaltering optimism. These schoolchildren created images of their community including self-portraits, festival flags and kites against a bright blue sky, children on a playground, cherry blossoms in bloom, a girl in a beautiful kimono, but nothing that reflected the horror they endured when the atomic bomb was dropped on their hometown Hiroshima. By following the journey of these pictures back to Honkawa Elementary School in Hiroshima, this film tells a story about hope in the face of horror, the possibility of reconciliation between bitter enemies, and the unwavering optimism of children. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmaker. Tickets: $5/person Sunday Afternoon documentaries | 15

The 2013 One Maryland One Book Selection is King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village, written by Peggielene Bartels and Eleanor Herman. Alexander McCall Smith (author of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series) has called King Peggy “An astonishing and wonderful book about a real-life Mma Ramotswe. An utter joy.” King Peggy chronicles the journey of an American secretary, Peggielene Bartels, who suddenly finds herself king to a town of 7,000 people on Ghana’s central coast, half a world away. Peggy’s first two years as king of Otuam unfold in a way that is stranger than fiction. In the end, a deeply traditional African town is uplifted by the ambitions of its decidedly modern female king, and Peggy is herself transformed, from an ordinary secretary to the heart and hope of her community. Celebrate Earth Day / The Man Who Planted Trees Enjoy a FREE screening of the Oscar winning animated short film, The Man Who Planted Trees, by master animator Frédéric Back, and then, join us for a fun and educational Earth Day activity for the whole family! In 1910, a young man hikes alone through Provence, France, and into the Alps, enjoying the relatively unspoiled wilderness. He runs out of water in a treeless, dried-up area where only wild lavender grows, but is saved by a middle-aged shepherd, Elzéard Bouffier, who brings him to a spring. Over four decades of time, the man finds himself returning again and again, each time rediscovering the landscape as it transforms from a desolate valley into a magnificent sylvan paradise as the shepherd Bouffier plants trees, one by one. This event is FREE, and includes snacks and soft drinks.
