René Treviño: Gran Fury Mexican-American and gay artist René Treviño is a Baltimore-based painter whose work explores history and identity. Treviño drove a 1987 Plymouth Gran Fury when he first moved to Baltimore in 2003. Gran Furies were often police cruisers in the 1980s. The name of the car came from Greek mythology: the Furies, goddesses of vengeance. An art/activist collective also known as Gran Fury used a combination of bold graphic design, guerrilla dissemination tactics, and art institutional support to communicate the urgency of the AIDS epidemic in light of disastrous government and political inaction. They are probably best known for the SILENCE = DEATH graphic that came to define the AIDS/HIV activist movement in the 1980s and early 1990s. This exhibit showcases paintings of Oreo cookies, the Gran Fury logo, star fields, and Mayan walls.
Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition: Reflections of Self Throughout time, artists have been skilled practitioners of self-reflection and introspection by constantly developing and analyzing a growing awareness of their self. This year’s county-juried exhibition highlights the variety of artistic thought processes and ideas that artists use to create solutions to their own struggles with self-reflection. *This year’s work was selected by Mr. John Coppola, who served as Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Exhibits Central, providing design, production, and installation services to the national museum complex. He was appointed by President Obama to the National Museum and Library Services Board. Coppola has organized and managed exhibitions for the Museum of Latin American Art, the Smithsonian Latino Center, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, and major international exhibitions such as “Isamu Noguchi: What Is Sculpture?” at the Venice Biennale and “An American Century: Three Generations of Wyeth Art” in the Soviet Union. He recently co-curated a 30-year retrospective of Peruvian photographer Lorry Salcedo.

Cat Gunn: Take Time
LIBRARY GALLERY The Library Gallery at Montpelier Arts Center highlights local artists selected by a juror. Kate Taylor Davis was the juror for the 20192020 Library Gallery Competition. Kate Taylor Davis has worked for and with D.C.-area arts organizations since 1999. She joined the staff of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in January 2017. Previously she was Vice President of ARCH Development Corporation, responsible for overseeing its arts projects such as Honfleur Gallery and Anacostia Arts Center, which Davis opened as its first director. In her spare time, she helps produce offbeat art events. Davis holds an MA in Arts Management from American University and a BA in English from the University of Michigan.
Cat Gunn creates abstract paintings through the lens of a queer, non-binary perspective. The use of repeating patterns and organic shapes creates a playful yet awkward contained space. The artwork provides a window into the transfer between states — erratic and continually evolving.

Sahomi Naka
Bao-Yen Nguyen
Sahomi Naka is a printmaker who mixes new and traditional techniques to create a safe and healthy printmaking process. Naka allows the materials to help her create the image; she collaborates with the medium rather than trying to force it towards “unnatural” perfection. Her prints capture fleeting moments of life and nature and portray the beauty of people and the world.
In her exhibition, Bao-Yen Nguyen explores the effects of the Vietnam War through a socio-ethnic lens and how the country’s past connects to the Americanized present. Having been born after the war, she never recognized the effect the war had on her life. Lacking perspective and understanding of the war and its impact on Vietnamese American contemporary life, she uses photojournalism and art to stimulate dialogue between the two periods: past and present. Nguyen strives to portray a narrative that reflects the impact of the war through a combination of digital manipulation and a more traditional process.
DECEMBER 1–31, 2019 Public Reception: Sunday, December 8, 2–4 pm
David Brosch: Recent Work by a Printmaker David Brosch has focused most of his artistic efforts in the last few years on producing monochromatic and full-color etchings and linocuts using fairly traditional techniques. This show will include limited edition hand-pulled prints and some of the plates and blocks from which the plates were pulled. The viewer will see how full-color prints are the result of multiple press runs and will see the intermediate stages of each artwork. The show will have a preponderance of landscapes, but there will be other subject matter that has inspired Brosch. David Brosch also teaches printmaking at Montpelier Arts Center.

Melissa Burley
Life, humanity, and the human condition are phrases that resonate with sculptor Barry Goldstein. Goldstein digs deeply to uncover what matters in life. In his search, he uses the artistic process as a path of exploration and inquiry into life and relationships. His work responds to the thoughts and feelings erupting from the relationships to narrative and circumstance. He knocks on the door of relationship in the hope of finding heart versus emptiness within. Goldstein’s art is a voice wondering what of life and our world is genuine and of substance and what is as empty as cotton candy.
Melissa Burley combines reclaimed items that may include glass, test tubes, furniture parts, clocks, bicycle components, and resin and illuminates them with LED lighting. The ultimate goal is to express one’s existence on this earth and to elevate these materials of the past to a level that suggests there is beauty in life after death.
