May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May! At Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation, we are all about “Live more, play more” but this May we encourage you to take the next step with your fitness and go outside or visit a park. Visits to parks have been declining since the dawn of email. One poll found only 10% of American teens spend time outside every day. At Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation, we want to change that and get our residents back out in the parks. In other words, we want you to take your “Live more, play more” OUTDOORS! Get out & get fit in celebration of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Utilize our parks, as well as our FREE and low cost facility programs to reach your fitness goals. Did you know gardening is considered moderate physical activity? Just 30 minutes of light gardening can burn over 160 calories! This May, join one of our community gardens or take a Fitness in the Parks class — there’s so much in between. Whether you’d like to pick up a new healthy hobby like gardening, or take a class either in the park or in one of our facilities, we urge you to get out, get fit and explore all that Prince George’s Parks and Recreation has to offer!
The Department of Parks and Recreation is dedicated to utilizing this new avenue to connect patients/ customers with our parks and services to improve their quality of life. Park Rx America is the only Park Rx program to link a “park formulary’’ (searchable database of parks) directly into the electronic health record (EHR) to allow providers the ability to prescribe parks “real time” to their patients. We believe this will encourage overall behavioral change, improve health outcomes, and foster new stewards and advocates for public lands.
2
GOALS OF PARK RX AMERICA • Help doctors and other health professionals “prescribe nature” to patients and families during routine delivery of health care. • Change patient and family behavior through increased time spent outdoors (subsequently reducing the effects of chronic disease). • Create the next generation of environmental and park stewards through outdoor exploration and experience. • Evaluate the effects of Park Rx on park utilization, overall park experience, and measurable health outcomes. • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and publications pertaining to health and wellness, public lands, outdoors, nature, and recreation.

“live more, play more”…
OUTDOORS this May! Spending time outside, in green spaces is great for your health and overall wellness. People underestimate the happiness effect of being outdoors. Studies have shown that spending time outside can reduce stress and anxiety. Time in nature can also lower blood pressure and hypertension while reducing cortisol levels, which is linked to stress and increased belly fat. Nature is a great place to improve your physical health and mental well-being. Tuesday, May 1, 10-11:30 am
