PRINCE GEORGE’S PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS | 1
THE PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. Designed in the art deco style by John Eberson, it was one of the first public spaces in the area to have air conditioning. In the late 1960s, the theater fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration, preserving many of the art deco elements of the building. In 1977, the building was re-opened as the Publick Playhouse, and since then has been a cultural resource that presents outstanding performances, classes, and art exhibitions for all ages.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an extravaganza of Latin American dance and music. This year’s mesmerizing showcase features the DC Casineros Dance Company and the DC Cuban All Stars Band, whose swirling skirts, tapping boots, and pulsating beats transform the Playhouse stage into a festival.
Celebrating the 80th birth year of the legendary R&B singer-songwriter, Blue Note recording artist José James presents “Lean On Me: José James Celebrates Bill Withers.” Vetted personally by Mr. Withers himself, the show is an exploration of the deep musical catalog that touched millions of hearts and united communities worldwide. Featuring Withers’ top 10 hits, as well as his soul ballads and rare grooves, James brings both a deep musical appreciation and a contemporary approach to songs such as “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Hope She’ll Be Happier,” and “Just the Two of Us.”

Wayson R. Jones is a 2-D artist that creates using a variety of materials including paints, pastels, canvas, paper, and wood. Much of his work is influenced by the ’50/’60s TV and movies of his childhood. His monochromatic works are stark and show a deep contrast between solid black and blinding white hues. The presence of his works is weighed by their scale, texture, and use of contrast. His pieces in this format are typically divided horizontally and filled with various gels, pigments, or other materials in a spontaneous and often reductive way that build up the composition. His work, while often abstract in form, also embodies elemental themes such as the earth, sky, planets, or bodies that seek to evoke the vastness and wonder of the world.
City Lights
Nipun Manda is an artist who works in a number of media. He incorporates visual, emotional, and psychological impressions of urban tension, raw emotions, and harsh realities tempered with gentle optimism and beauty. He uses emotion, inspiration of nature, and mankind to become living imagery in a joy of whimsical transformations. His abstract Expressionism often contains the spontaneous act of aesthetics and artistic expression of inner and outer spaces.

Janet Matthews is a photographer who explores psychological themes through evocative still life and landscape images. Her background in drawing and painting has influenced her approach to photography, as she often incorporates hands-on methods into her work. Her Vignettes and Small Anxieties series places small figures in images based on both personal experience and metaphorical situations that allow the viewer to use their imagination to interpret the scene.
Nico Gozal creates 2-D works using handpainted silks that fuse his Indonesian ancestry with the culture of America. Three different series will be presented together to show Gozal’s range of subject matter within the medium. Each painting is delicate and intricate, sometimes also having a fluid or sculptural quality on the surface as well. Other influences of his work include the music and languages of the world. He hopes to stimulate and draw out personal experiences and responses from his viewers while also transcending boundaries of race, language, culture, religion, and ethnicity.

World Dance Showcase Auditions Performers of traditional, culture-specific dance styles (ages 16 years and older) may audition for the 18th Annual World Dance Showcase. Adjudicators will select six groups to perform in concert on Saturday, March 28, 2020, 8 pm, with each group receiving an honorarium of $600. Those selected will have a custom lighting design created for them using state-of-the-art computerized lighting displays available at the Publick Playhouse. A professional high-definition video recording of each dance is made available to the selected dance companies after the March performance. The audition piece may include any traditional work of 15 minutes or less. Work must be auditioned in finished form with costumes. General stage lighting, microphones, and CD/mp3 players will be provided. Music may be live or pre-recorded.
