CALENDAR OF EVENTS January –June 2020

, a National Historic Land-

mark, was begun by Henri Joseph Stier in 1801. A political refugee, Stier fled his native Antwerp with his family during the French Revolution.

After his return to Europe, his daughter, Rosalie, and her

husband, George Calvert, made it their home. Mrs. Calvert’s letters tell the story of this family and their elegant house, a story that is an integral part of the history of Prince George’s County, the state of Maryland, and the nation. Today, this historic house museum of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission offers regular tours and special programs throughout the year. Expensive goods like chocolate and spices were luxuries in the Federal era. Unwrap Chocolate’s Secrets in time for Valentine’s Day during a guided tasting. Later in the month, come back for sweets and celebrations in honor of Rosalie’s Birthday. The Kitchen Guild invites guests into the warmth of the open hearth for Seasonal Selections demonstrations throughout the year. During Black History Month, the open hearth comes alive during the Plummers’ Kitchen and highlights popular African American recipes from the early 1900s when Nellie Arnold Plummer, daughter of the enslaved Adam Francis Plummer, was a teacher and church elder in the area. In March, visit the Kitchen Guild Open House and learn what YOU need to know to become a cooking volunteer. The Calverts raised nine children at Riversdale. Make memories with your parents by treating them to FREE Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Tours! Everyone can have a FREE tour of the home and garden courtesy of Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. Hard cider said to be, “as good as champagne,” was produced at Riversdale. Make merry with tavern fare and entertainment during Tavern Night in May. Mrs. Calvert enjoyed music and the theater and you can do the same during Shakespeare in the Parks in the summer. Enjoy the sounds of FREE Chamber, Family, and Jazz on the Lawn concerts throughout the spring and summer. Mrs. Calvert considered it a great “honor to have the most beautiful” flowers in her garden. Wander through the fresh blooms during a Celebration of Spring and refresh among the trees during Yoga on the Grounds in the summer.
