Celebrating National Fitness Month 2011

“Whether your aim is to lose weight, quit smoking, reduce stress, run a marathon, eat better or just look great -Healthy Lifestyles provides a realistic framework that sets you up for success.” (Findahealthieryou.com) Did you know that many Prince George’s County residents have lifestyle-related diseases that stem from lack of physical activity? In celebration of 2011 National Fitness Month, the Department of Parks and Recreation invites Prince George’s County families to take part in FREE fitness activities during the month of May. Fitness activities will be hosted at M-NCPPC parks and recreation venues throughout Prince George’s County. Activities offered include FREE programs in aquatics, scenic walks, DoubleDutch clinic, strength training, ZUMBA, kayaking, and health screenings.

People and Pups Hike at Patuxent Wildlife Refuge

Explore the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge and release some doggie energy! Meet at Patuxent Wildlife Center located at 10901 Scarlet Tanager Ct. in Laurel (near the intersection of the B-W Parkway and Powder Mill Road). Please wear appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, and bring water and a dish for your dog. All dogs MUST be with an owner 18 or older, and be restrained on a leash. For safety reasons, children are not permitted on the hike, and no dog-aggressive or people-aggressive dogs are permitted on the hike. This program is FREE. Space is limited.

“Make a Splash” FREE Water Safety Program The Department of Parks and Recreation has joined forces with the USA Swimming Foundation’s “Make a Splash” initiative to offer FREE Water Safety Lessons to young people in Prince George’s County this summer! The 2011 program will offer 600 spaces to participants ages 6-17 who hold FREE M-NCPPC Youth IDs. Participants will receive four FREE Water Safety Lessons designed to increase awareness of safety in, on, and around water, and to promote drowning prevention. Registration begins May 31, 2011.
