Churches set to convert to renewable technologies

Hundreds of churches in the UK are going green as they take part in the Big Church Switch, an initiative to help Christian churches of all dominations switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, has revealed that more than 400 churches in the UK plan to switch to clean energy providers for their light and heat, shifting spending of £1 million to renewables from fossil fuels. The move is part of the Big Church Switch, an initiative launched in February by charities Christian Aid and Tearfund, which urged UK churches and households to use clean sources of energy instead of carbon-emitting fossil fuels. An online platform connects those who sign up with energy experts, promising to find them the best renewable deal by negotiating with energy providers. “As individuals and churches, we have a choice in how we treat the earth, how we spend our money, how we power our homes and our buildings,” says David Walker, the Anglican Bishop of Manchester. “By creating technology which can turn wind and sunshine into clean and renewable energy, humans continue to benefit from

the gift of creation. Making the most of this bountiful harvest is a common sense way for us to roll back the ravages of climate change and ensure we are taking an active role in being part of the solution.” Overall, there are more than 50,000 churches in the UK with the opportunity to take advantage of this chance to go green with the help of a negotiated purchasing framework. Among the 424 churches that

have already registered with the Big Church Switch is the world’s oldest Methodist chapel, The New Room in Bristol (pictured), built by John Wesley. “We may be the oldest Methodist building in the world, but that doesn’t mean we have to use the polluting energy of the past,” says David Worthington, Manager of The New Room. “Switching our energy provider to clean sources of power is a simple thing we can do to help the global transition to a low carbon world. If we, in a building as old as ours, can embrace the idea of renewable energy, then anyone can.” Pope Francis, the leader of the 1.2 billion-member Catholic Church, has been outspoken about the need for reductions in carbon emissions to tackle climate change. He reached out to environmentalists around the world in June when he urged immediate action to save the planet from the effects of climate change, declaring that the use of ‘highly polluting fossil fuels needs to be progressively replaced without delay.’

A North Devon gas engineer has appeared in court after removing potentially dangerous asbestos material during a gas boiler replacement in a tenant’s property, putting himself and others at risk from exposure to asbestos fibres. Brian Hockin, aged 58, was removing an old warm air heating system at a residential property on Williams Close, Wrafton, when he disturbed a quantity of asbestos insulation board that surrounded the warm air boiler. The tenants of the property raised their concerns with the installer that he had disturbed asbestos, but he continued to remove the material, bagging it and removing it from the property and storing it at his yard.

The tenants were so concerned that they contacted Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which prosecuted Brian Hockin at Barnstaple Magistrates’ court. During the hearing the court heard that Brian Hockin used no safety measures to prevent the spread of asbestos and that he used no protective clothing or protective breathing apparatus when he was removing the asbestos. Mr Hockin pleaded guilty of breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and was fined £450 and ordered to pay £921.40 in costs. Speaking after the trial, HSE Inspector Simon Jones said: “Brian Hockin’s negligence could result in serious health effects to both him

and anyone else who may have come into contact with the asbestos material that he disturbed. Given Mr Hockin’s vast experience as a gas engineer, he should have realised that there is a very good chance that a 30 year old gas boiler could be insulated with asbestos insulation board, but he made no checks before working around the material.” Simon Jones advises tradesmen to always be aware that asbestos can be found in any industrial or residential building built or refurbished before the year 2000. He says they should make enquiries about asbestos before starting work and should stop work immediately if they suspect asbestos could be present.

St George’s Prosecution for unsafe asbestos removal upgraded Liverpool City Council has chosen to install Remeha boilers throughout St George’s Hall, considered one of the finest neoclassical buildings in the world and part of Liverpool’s UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. The refurbished heating system centres around four Remeha Gas 210 Eco Pro condensing boilers installed in its north plant room. The new system has improved the reliability and energy efficiency of the heating provision and has standardised the heating equipment for more efficient maintenance and operation of this service.

Editor’s legionella issue Viewpoint A recent inquest into a fatality caused by exposure to legionella has helped to highlight the importance for installers to ensure that all possible prevention measures have been taken. After a 24-day stay in hospital on a cancer ward in July last year, 68-year-old Mr Terry Brooks tragically died from pneumonia caused by legionella. Investigations have revealed that water samples taken from his ward the day before his death were contaminated with legionella, while further testing found no evidence of the bacteria at his home or other possible sources. Chris Tranter, Product Manager at Bristan, a supplier of commercial water controls, comments: “This tragic incident, one of a number to hit the headlines in recent months, is a powerful reminder of why, as an industry, we must bring legionella control to the top of the agenda. “Although there is an abundance of guidance around the control of legionella, the problem lies in the fact that the onus is put on a ‘competent person’ to carry out risk assessments to determine which strategies, regimes and products are

by Chris Jones

Churches spread the word

most appropriate, leaving wide scope for human error.” The disease is most commonly found in water whereby the bacteria multiply where temperatures are between 20-45ºC. As such, water must be stored at 60ºC or above to limit growth and all water devices must be regularly flushed to prevent any internal build-up. However, if water reaches a tap at 60°C, there is a risk of scalding unless TMV3 approved products are used. “Although it’s still a topic of much debate, it is vital that, as an industry, we take a considered and holistic approach to the specification of products which can aid legionella control and hot water safety, thus helping to ensure such tragic circumstances like this are prevented,” adds Chris Tranter.

Many people have made the case for cleaner, renewable energy based on the grounds of cost savings and security of supply, but now church leaders have brought the moral argument to the fore of the debate. The Big Church Switch campaign (see this month’s lead story) aims to encourage UK churches and many of their congregation to help in the global transition to a low carbon world by moving away from fossil fuels and investing in clean sources of energy. Some might say that there’s enough confusion surrounding the energy debate without bringing God into it, but the church initiative does highlight the lack of leadership from elsewhere. The climate deal in Paris last December was viewed as a milestone in the worldwide drive to address the problem of climate change, but despite making all the right noises our own Government continues to drag its feet when it comes to introducing measures of any consequence. With so many stop/start initiatives such as the Green Deal and RHI, it’s not surprising that both manufacturers and consumers appear reluctant to abandon their attachment to more familiar heat sources. It remains to be seen if preaching from the pulpits will help to boost the sales of solar panels or heat pumps, but it should also be remembered that renewable technology isn’t the only way to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. Our Energy Efficient Products feature in this month’s issue provides a showcase for the diverse range of appliances and accessories that can play a part in cutting household fuel bills. For those who fail to see the light or are reluctant to be fully converted, they may at least represent a small step forward on the road to redemption. MV_Fluids_qtr_A3_Aug05 Follow us on

Internet of Things drives heating market Bright year ahead for British trades

A new report on the 2016 domestic central heating market from MTW Research indicates that sales of boilers, radiators, controls and pumps have grown by £100 million as the IoT (Internet of Things), the RHI and ECO2 (Energy Company Obligation) underpin demand growth. The most significant contributor in 2016 is the Domestic Internet of Things Market (DIoT), with rapid growth in smart heating controls and DIoT devices. Based on data from 140 heating suppliers, the research uncovered 18.4 million central heating products sold in 2016, the highest number ever. The report indicates that whilst pricing remains a key issue, investment in added value

features such as IoT, ‘Smart Technology’ and enhanced user/installer benefits is giving rise to a ‘two-tier’ market. Higher-value UK and West European manufactured heating products are edging ahead in terms of value growth, whilst lower

value imports continue an ‘inexorable race to the bottom,’ according to MTW. The 280 page report identifies a number of growth sectors in the domestic central heating market in 2016. One example is the higher value biomass boiler market, with

54%

solid fuel rising by 40% in the last few years as sales are supported by the RHI, despite tariffs reducing by 20%. As a result of the ECO scheme, some 250,000 central heating installations were undertaken in the last three years. MTW also reviewed the heat pumps market in value and volume, reporting near double digit growth, with ground and air source heat pumps gaining share of the overall domestic heating market in 2016. Forecasting further ahead, the report indicates that heating sales are set to rise to near doubledigit growth by 2020. The domestic central heating market report is available for £595 from MTW’s website: www. marketresearchreportsco.uk

Plumbers are among the many trades with an optimistic outlook for 2016, according to the latest Trade Pulse survey by Screwfix. The favourable view is based on expected high business levels, increased enquiries for work, and confidence in the wider national economy. The majority (89%) of those questioned said they expect business to remain at the same level or to improve in the year ahead. When compared to 12 months ago, more than a third are providing more quotes for potential work and nearly half of tradespeople reported that business is better. The findings also revealed that 43% are currently busier than expected, with 14% saying they had too much work to handle. Geberit breaks ground on its new HQ

CO and pregnancy The University of Hertfordshire is carrying out research on accidental CO exposure among pregnant women and their foetuses. This work will help understand the scale of the problem and what actions should be taken following on from a number of incidents that have occurred in recent years. It will be funded by the Gas Safety Trust. The study will seek to understand the incidence of accidental CO exposure among all pregnant women and their foetuses in East and North Hertfordshire. It will commence with a two month literature review to identify CO, pregnancy and foetus related publications. A six month winter period of data collection using three non-invasive devices – ambient air, exhaled air and pulse CO-oximetry – will measure levels of CO in the home of the pregnant woman on two occasions: late first/early second trimester, then late second/early third trimester. All CO exposed women will be referred to the National Gas Safety Emergency Service to make their environment safe.

Following its acquisition of Twyford Bathrooms last year, Geberit has begun building work on its 22,500ft2 headquarters, twice the size of its current premises. The new head office is conveniently situated, just off junction 15 of the M40 in Warwick, close to the existing Geberit building. The ground floor of the new building will be home to the Geberit and Twyford Training Academy where customers attend free workshops to gain hands

on experience with the latest plumbing and piping systems. There will also be a 400m2 showroom featuring the latest bathroom designs

Checklist for fires Following the extension of the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council’s (HHIC) Benchmark member scheme to help improve the standard and safety of gas fire installations, Valor now includes an HHIC gas fire commissioning list in packaging for all products. Tracey Falshaw, Product Marketing Manager at

Valor, says: “We support any initiative which can ensure safe installation, and we are delighted that the Benchmark scheme has been extended to fires. We worked closely with HHIC to compile this checklist and we are proud to say that we are one of the first gas fire manufacturers to get behind the Benchmark initiative.”

and technology, while the second floor will host Geberit’s central operations. The new development will see the creation of 30

new jobs across marketing, customer service, finance and technical support areas. An official groundbreaking ceremony took place at the site of the new building in February, with the new headquarters due for completion in January 2017. “The building work marks an important milestone for the new business,“ says MD Mark Larden. “Centrally located, it makes good sense to choose the existing Geberit site in Warwick for the development.“

that will also help the environment, what energy is being used in the manufacture of the products, bear ing in mind their relatively short working life? In addition how much energy miles are used in distr ibuti ng the various components arou nd the world via road, air and sea?

I could n’t help but smile as I read the front page article in last month’s PHA M News: ‘Industry unites behi nd new boiler scheme’. The compassion and thou ghtfu lness towa rds the customer and at the same time helpi ng save the envi ronment was hear twar ming.

Then I wondered if the orga nisations mentioned had a vested interest in getting such a scheme off the ground so more boilers could be sold. Now there’s a thought. I am sure it is an oversight, but the article didn’t seem to mention that after having a new boiler installed the customer is likely to be payi ng for some rather expensive boiler repa irs after about five years. Why such repa irs are expensive is worr ying, but that is for another day.

It seems to me that the promised savings to the environment are not there but are just being consumed elsewhere by being pushed up the chai n and out of sight. I seem to reca ll not that long ago that diesel fuel was being hailed as a fuel that would help save the envi ronment and everyone was encouraged to buy a diesel vehicle. But now diesel is the bad boy. In a few years time when the consumer catches on, will we be reading about ‘Boilergate’?

Then after arou nd ten years the customer is likely to be payi ng for a replacement boiler. At this point a rather large question shou ld raise its head as to what actual savings have been achieved. While the consumer is promised savings

Customers should be given a choice and not just what is on offer now. New boiler or old boiler, judicious use of proper system controls will have the same effect. W. Whitworth Harrow

Many inefficient systems

Simply changing an old heating appliance for an ‘A’ rated one in my opinion will not save you money. Dare I say 90% of heating systems are wasting money simply by not having been adjusted to achieve a 20oC drop across each and every heat emitter/radiator? I have two daughters who live far from each other and far from me. The youngest, in a housing association property, has in this last month had a new gas-fired heating system fitted. Yes, it worked and the rads got hot, admittedly some more than others. On checking, no attempt had been made to adjust system. I shut the pump down to its minimum setting and adjusted every lockshield valve on every radiator, and the improvement in the system was dramatic. How many more systems in that one housing association are left like that? My eldest lives in Staffordshire and she owns her own newly built house on a rather large development. All of her radiators had their lockshield valves wide open also, one rad didn’t heat at all. She called the builder and he sent a plumber to rectify problem. He turned the pump up and shut all rads upstairs and cold rads got hot. Then turned back on the rads he had shut. ‘You’ll be alright now madam’, he said as he left. I drove 200 miles and turned the pump down and adjusted all L/S valves, even on the rad that didn’t heat before. Now the system is as it should be. How many more systems on that site are left wasting money? G.A. Pitchford, Norfolk

There is a lot of talk about skills gaps among a variety of trades, including our own, with many plumbing and heating engineers only maintaining the minimum qualifications to perform the work they do. I also hear a lot about apprentices searching desperately for a place in the real world, with few opportunities to shoot for because seasoned installers can’t be bothered to take them on. So I was surprised at the comment made by Jim Marner in his Point of View article in the March issue. He said that the number of plumbing apprenticeships far exceed the sector’s needs. How can this be true? So I turned the pages and saw the CIPHE article by Kevin Wellman. He says that more quality apprenticeships are needed in the sector and more should be done to encourage school leavers to think outside the university box. So who’s right? Are there too many pouring into the plumbing sector, or are there not enough opportunities to bring the young ones in as the old ones retire? I can’t claim to have insider’s knowledge of the sector, but from my place on the ground I see enough old guys like me who are contemplating retirement, and not one of them has an apprentice who might benefit from their years of experience and bring up the rear. I’m afraid that includes me. When I go, there will be no one to fill my shoes. M.D. Charles via email

Fire hazards Not all about the money

I was very interested to read your front page story about indoor air quality last month. It mentions the dangers of wood burning stoves, saying they release a significant number of polluting particles. Most of these particles are smaller than a single micron, and that’s the kind most damaging to lungs. One study found that breathing in wood fire smoke is 30 times more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke. It can aggravate the lungs and air passages in everyone who breathes it and can worsen asthma (especially in children). So the fact is wood burning fires not only contaminate indoor air quality, it does the same outdoors, and all that smoke going up the chimney is generously shared with your neighbours who are exposed to it. It’s much more health- and eco-friendly to rely upon your gas heating system. R.D. Samuels via email

I have nothing against London millionaire plumber Charlie Mullins or Joseph Valente, the ambitious winner of TV’s ‘The Apprentice’, who clearly thinks a plumbing and heating business is as good as printing your own money, but am I alone in thinking that there’s a bit more to this game than making a tidy profit? Some might say that I should set my sights higher, but I’m quite content to be self-employed with only my own income to worry about. I like not being answerable to anyone but my customers, and keeping them happy gives me more satisfaction than the money I make at the end of the month. Life is perfectly fine and we have more than enough to meet our needs, but my other half is starting to wonder why we’re not also part of the millionaire club! John Watson Birmingham

Green Matters 15 Heat pump features Finance package on biomass installs in eco show home Vaillant has partnered with self-build timber frame designer, ScandiaHus, to demonstrate the potential of renewable technologies by installing a ground source heat pump into its Adelia show home in Felcourt, West Sussex. The show home is a fully working example of a domestic ScandiaHus property. Part of the aim is to demonstrate to potential new customers a reliable and renewable heating solution, hence the installation of Vaillant’s geoTHERM ground source heat pump. For the heat pump installation, two boreholes were drilled at depths of 107 and 108m deep to access thermal energy stored in the ground and then convert it into heat and hot water production for the heat pump. Housed in a separate building to the main property, the geoTHERM heat pump is connected to a high performance hot water cylinder and an underfloor heating system. “By partnering with Scandia-Hus we’re highlighting the features and benefits of a renewable heating system in the early design stage,” says John Bailey, Vaillant’s Commercial and Renewable Systems Director. “Integrating a solution like a ground source heat pump into a new build, especially if it’s off mains grid, should be a simple decision as there are already ground works taking place.” www.vaillant.co.uk/installers

Commercial clients of Windhager UK can now take advantage of a new asset finance package to fund biomass boiler system installations. Windhager is working with Macquarie, a global finance provider, to offer finance to its customers. Windhager MD Oliver Duckworth comments: “We are delighted to be working with Macquarie to assist companies with their cash flow when investing in

biomass heating systems. Numerous projects are already using this scheme, including hotel and care groups.” The team at Macquarie work closely with the Windhager UK account manager on any new biomass project. When the business wishes to explore the advantages of financing a scheme, the finance company speaks directly with the customer to discuss the figures. Once

finance is agreed, there is no up front deposit and the customer starts making monthly payments once Macquarie has received the invoice from the supplier of the biomass equipment after delivery and commissioning. Stefano Girolami, Manager of Macquarie Equipment Finance, says: “Organising the finance on biomass heating systems is really very straightforward, with credit decisions normally within

24 hours. We will take into account the energy savings and RHI payments when considering the funding. Finance periods are generally up to five years and can be tailored to suit. This funding provides businesses with a much quicker return on their investment and often helps convert a project into a cash neutral or cash positive position from day one.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

The Solar Trade Association (STA) Scotland has put forward a set of ‘key asks’ on solar to support the Scottish Government’s plans to meet 100% of electricity demand from renewables by 2020 and to feed into the new Energy Strategy for Scotland. Scotland is currently over half way to reaching this target and has over 7.5GW of renewables, of which over 5GW is onshore wind. The STA Scotland says solar can make an important contribution to the rest of the target and provide an essential balance to the mix. The Association is proposing that the Scottish Government achieve its

renewables targets by putting together a dedicated Solar Action Plan and suggests targets for both PV and solar thermal for 2020. The action list also contains specific recommendations on business rates, social housing and community energy. John Forster, Chairman of STA Scotland, says: “There are a number of simple, practical things the Scottish Government can do to boost solar north of the border, whether it is encouraging wind and solar to share grid capacity or changes to planning. We are optimistic that the next few years will be good for solar in Scotland.”

16 Point of View

Boilers don’t need to be that complicated After more than 40 years of sales experience, Jim Boyce knows a thing or two about what people want. The UK Sales Director of Dutch boiler manufacturer Intergas Heating argues that keeping things simple for both installers and end users is the key to success.

I

am passionate about selling products that perform a useful function – products that help people. That’s why, for the past 40 years, I’m proud to have worked with some amazing boiler brands like Alpha, Baxi and Vaillant. It’s given me the opportunity to look at developments in boiler technology while they’re still on the drawing board. Some advances have been phenomenally important to in-home safety and energy efficiency, but many boilers, especially now, are over-engineered. They’re so chock full of additional components like micro switches, sensors and valve motors that something’s always going to fail. And if you can read the newer control panels, with their complicated background menus, I must congratulate you! Many installers and consumers are just plain confused by them. Why make everything so complicated?

Keep it simple

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘keep it simple, stupid’. As the world gets more complicated, it’s the simple solutions that provide true, sustainable benefits. But this phrase, or the ‘KISS principle’ as it’s commonly known, was created 60 years ago by American aeronautical engineer Kelly Johnson to make sure that his systems design team didn’t lose sight of their goals through overly-complicated thinking. Johnson wanted the aircraft he was designing to have simple, easy-to-carry-out repair processes so that mechanics could fix problems using the tools and skills they already had. You might argue that the world in the mid-fifties was a very different place to the one we inhabit now and that attaining simplicity is outmoded, but you’d be wrong. Installer feedback KISS is alive and well in, of all places, the software At Intergas we take the opportunity to talk to installers industry. Practitioners say that as software systems when they’re undergoing training and get their feedback are maintained by human developers with limited on what they’re looking capabilities, any increase for in a boiler. Of course, in a system’s complexity “Has increased complexity improved reliability is always first will increase the difficulty energy efficiency and reliability?” of maintaining it. But it on the list and their frustration over the most takes more than a little common failures on combi bit of genius to be that boilers, such as diverter valves sticking, auto air vents uncomplicated. Just think of James Dyson and his leaking and secondary hot water plate heat exchangers mission to create a vacuum cleaner that doesn’t lose clogging up, are openly expressed. suction; or Teflon, a coating which is, quite simply, used One installer made the comment that he was fed up everywhere and, at the other end of the scale, the humble with changing diverter valves, where it’s usually tucked zip. In fact the world is full of great products which have behind something else and a real faff to get at. Another been produced thanks to the clear, unclouded thinking of wondered why did he have to be restricted to buying dedicated inventors. a specific (and usually more expensive) part, because there’s no commonality between manufacturers’ ranges. Less is more The growing complexity of boilers naturally has a Harry Bosscher, the Chief Executive of Intergas Heating, knock-on effect on the training needed to understand probably didn’t think of himself as an inventor when, as them. No installer wants a complicated boiler but with a senior engineer at Intergas in 1994, he was asked to find some boiler brands you’ll have to attend an eight-hour an alternative to the geyser-style boilers being used by training course. That’s a whole day’s business gone, a housing association in the Netherlands. These boilers excluding travel, for an experienced heating engineer. were prone to breakdowns, a cause of frustration among

ENQUIRY

tenants, and did not provide adequate energy efficiency or economy. After a couple of years of development, Bosscher had built a prototype for a combination boiler that was so advanced, yet so simple, it remains at the cutting edge of boiler technology almost two decades after its launch. The boiler has only 12 components, which includes four moving parts; the two-in-one aluminium heat exchanger is so solidly built that it has never had a mechanical failure, and the intelligent design dispenses with the need for a secondary hot water plate heat exchanger, diverter valve, valve motor, air pressure switch and air vent. With fewer parts there’s less to go wrong. I’m no philistine when it comes to progress, but it should be progress with a purpose. For example, some of you might be fed up with the news that Apple may remove the 3.5mm headphone port from the upcoming iPhone 7 to make it even slimmer; you’ll have to buy new headphones – more expense – but, as with most things Apple, you know you won’t be disappointed. The phone will perform as you’d expect and it will look even better, because that’s what Apple does. Can the same be said for boilers? Has increased complexity improved energy efficiency and reliability? Perhaps, in some cases, but I keep my ear to the ground and that’s not what I’m hearing.

18 Business Matters

Dealing with discipline problems Disciplining an employee for bad behaviour on the job is never a pleasant task, but it is one that most people in charge of staff will have to face at some point in their career. Employment expert Lee Ashwood offers some useful advice about how to proceed.

I

t is often said that the best asset of any business is its employees. While that may be the case, having employees will mean that at some point their behaviour will fall below what is expected of them, either because they break a rule, do not follow a procedure, make a mistake or struggle to do something asked of them. As a manager or business owner, at some point in your career you will be faced with an employee whose behaviour is not what you wanted and you will have to consider how to deal with it.

Setting policy A good starting place is your disciplinary policy. It will probably identify types of behaviour that you should think of as ‘gross misconduct’, that is behaviour so serious that, if proven, warrants dismissing the employee immediately and without pay in lieu of any notice. Typically, you will find theft, dishonesty, violence, serious breaches of health and safety, and so on, are considered to be gross misconduct. But what about behaviour that is not so serious? Your disciplinary policy should clearly identify what behaviour is considered to be misconduct, e.g. minor offences such as lateness, rudeness to colleagues or customers, untidy appearance or minor breaches of procedure and the disciplinary action that may be taken for such misconduct. Your disciplinary policy should provide for a staged process, and even if it does not, it is the recommended approach by experts and also expected by Employment Tribunals. In most circumstances, the first stage is speaking to the employee informally about their behaviour. At this stage in the process it is usually more effective to demonstrate that you are being supportive, want to understand what has caused their poor behaviour and look at ways to prevent it recurring. Remember that your goal is to correct their behaviour and not to alienate them – if you are struggling to decide on what tone to take, you should be thinking perhaps how you would like to be spoken to – with respect and calmly. Ensure that you have somewhere private to speak to the employee so that you can have an uninterrupted conversation. Explain what it is that you are unhappy with and what standard of behaviour is required of them. Explain why their behaviour is not meeting that standard and what effect their current behaviour is having, for example on their colleagues’ morale or their team’s performance. Invite the employee to explain why they are failing to meet the required behaviour. It may be there is an issue that you were unaware of that you can help resolve. For example, the employee may reveal that their recent lateness for work is due to an issue with their child care arrangements. If you have approached the discussion in an amiable way and with an open mind, when you get such an explanation from an employee you are wellplaced to give them your support and, in return, receive their appreciation. Rather than disciplining the employee, you may choose to adjust their working hours to help them.

Expectations In any event, by the end of the informal meeting, it is important that you have set the expectation for improvement and explained, in a nice way, that should the poor behaviour be repeated or continue, then disciplinary action may be taken in the future. In most cases, an informal discussion, as has been described here, will usually correct the behaviour and the matter will be resolved. However, if the informal approach is not successful, it is important that repeated misconduct does not go unaddressed. Do not delay having a difficult conversation to avoid causing upset – you will inevitably have to speak to the employee at some point and the longer they have been allowed to behave unacceptably without challenge, the more likely they are to be aggrieved and uncooperative when action is taken.

18.indd 1

Next stage The next stage is to rely on warnings, often on an increasing scale of a verbal warning, followed by a written warning, a final written warning and, ultimately, dismissal. While that may seem straightforward, it can be difficult to decide at what point to take disciplinary action. You should always be consistent when disciplining employees; however, that can be difficult to achieve as it is rarely a case of ‘one size fits all’ and the action you take will depend on the circumstances. You would not consider taking disciplinary action in respect of an employee who has worked for you for 10 years and has been late on one occasion. By contrast, moving towards a warning is very likely in respect of an employee who has been with you for a few months, is regularly late for work without good reason and has been spoken with informally first.

If, once you have established what appears to have gone on and why, you still decide to discipline the employee then they should be invited to a disciplinary hearing. If possible, the person who conducted the investigation should not be the same person to conduct the disciplinary hearing. The disciplinary hearing should be arranged promptly whilst giving the employee sufficient time to prepare. A minimum of 24 hours notice is usually provided, however your disciplinary policy may provide for a longer period or you may decide a longer period is needed due to the particular circumstances, for example, when there are numerous investigation documents. The employee should be notified of the disciplinary hearing in writing and the letter should confirm: • the allegation against them • that they have the right to be accompanied by a work colleague or trade union representative • the potential outcome of the hearing, for example, a first written warning • the date, time and location of the hearing. The employee should also be provided with a copy of all of the documents collated during the investigation.

Keeping an open mind

When holding the disciplinary hearing, allow the employee to respond to the allegation against them and comment on the evidence. This is the employee’s opportunity to state their case and you should listen and consider their response – you must keep an open mind. Once you are satisfied you have addressed all points, adjourn the disciplinary hearing to consider your decision. Once you have decided on the appropriate action, for example to issue a first written warning, reconvene the disciplinary hearing to confirm your decision to the employee. Once the disciplinary hearing has been concluded, you should also confirm your decision in writing and, where a Final warning warning has been issued, confirm when the warning will expire. At this point you may decide that a more authoritarian Finally, whenever any disciplinary sanction is imposed, the approach is appropriate given that an informal approach has employee should be given the opportunity to appeal against been unsuccessful. The approach you adopt will ultimately the decision. Where possible, the person who has conducted depend on the nature of the misconduct, the employee the appeal hearing should be different to the person who and the stage you are at in the disciplinary process. If you conducted the investigation and disciplinary hearing. are at the point of issuing a verbal warning then you may In most cases, you will see an improvement in the still be fairly informal in your employee’s behaviour before approach. 20 Gadgets & Tools Lending a hand when you need it most Ever find yourself in need of a little support when you’re working on pipes? Then Len Da Hand might be just the partner you need. It gives you a strong, flexible arm that supports a pipe at an infinite number of angles while you work on it. The steel hand attached to the flexible arm allows it to support pipes in close proximity to the joint while soldering. The strong clamp enables the unit to be fixed to pipes with a diameter up to 1½in. It’s also suitable for solvent weld products.

The clamp has two slots to allow Lend Da Hand to securely fasten to a ceiling, wall or any other surface. Inventor Adam Lowe says:

“I regularly came across a problem while soldering copper pipework. When you heat up the pipe and fitting with your blow torch, if the

pipework is not supported properly the pipe will move or drop due to the capillary action. This causes the weld to break, leaving you the headache of recleaning the pipe and fitting and starting the whole process again. “I came up with an idea to solve this and have worked closely with a design team to create Len Da Hand. This innovative new product will help you save time and help you work more efficiently.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Tomorrow, your customers will continue to enjoy our reliable gas condensing technology. Today they enjoy the price.

Getting to know you In a new series, PHAM News is shining the spotlight on installers around the country to get a picture of what life is like for them at work and at play. NAME: Jason O’Connell COMPANY: JP Plumbing & Gas Heating Services FROM: Warwick

At work...

At play...

What time do you usually start work? “I usually start at about half past eight to get materials from the merchant. A lot of customers get back from the school run at about half past nine, so I’ll get to them for around then.”

What’s your favourite takeaway? “A nice steak bake from Greggs.”

Do you have time to attend training courses? “I do the odd course, yes, and I’ve been to the Worcester Bosch factory a couple of times. I go on a week-long gas course every five years to keep up to date with the current gas safety regulations.” Do customers respect your opinion? “Yes, I think if you do a good job, word gets around. I’d say 80% of the people who call me are repeat customers, and almost all of my work is generated locally.” If you weren’t an installer what other job would you do? “Well I am a qualified chef, so I’d run my own restaurant somewhere by the beach. I worked at the Savoy in London, the Ritz Casino, and won a competition at the Barbican for my chicken galantine!” What’s the best part of your job? “The best part of my job is getting a call from a customer when their boiler has broken down, and then getting it working within an hour.” Do you think smart controls are helping customers save money? “Yes, I think they’re very good. I do get customers with new heating controls saying that their house doesn’t get as hot as it used to, but the key is siting the thermostat in the most suitable location.”

How many teas or coffees do you drink in a day? “I don’t drink coffee, but I like an Earl Grey or Darjeeling tea! Usually when I go to a customer’s house they have PG Tips or something similar, and I reckon I drink about four cups a day.” What’s the best thing on TV at the moment? “I don’t watch much TV, but I do like documentaries. David Attenborough’s very good, and I quite like Davina McCall’s new show ‘Life at the Extreme’.”

NEW Vitodens 100-W Viessmann makes efficiency more attractive: With the reliable gas condensing wall mounted Vitodens 100-W.

Are you into sport? “I’m not really that into sport, although I do some water skiing and have done for years. I’ve also tried grass skiing which was interesting – going down a grassy hill on a big rollerblade!”

Wall mounted gas condensing boiler, 4.7 to 35.0 kW Energy efficiency class: A Improved modulation ratio 1:6 Modulating stainless steel cylinder burner New user friendly control via dimmable backlit LCD touchscreen

Are you going on holiday this year? “Yes, we’re going back to Kefalonia. My mum thinks it’s the most beautiful place in the world. Mind you, she says that wherever she goes. I googled ‘most beautiful beaches’ and Kefalonia came up, so we went! It’s unbelievable. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Are you a music fan? “Yes, I like a bit of everything, depending on what mood I’m in. I don’t stick to any particular bands.” What was your favourite subject at school? “It’s got to be Home Economics, because I used to be a chef. Apart from that, I was probably best at Art and Biology.”

How do you promote your business? “I’m on yell.com and in the Yellow Pages. I’ve also done some work on my wesbite to ensure it performs well in online searches.”

Jason O’Connell was speaking after taking advantage of Worcester, Bosch Group’s installer cash-back promotion by installing a Wave Smart Thermostat in his own home. To find out more about Worcester’s installer cashback promotion, visit www.worcester-bosch.co.uk

When does your working day finish? “It usually finishes between half five and six. Then I’m on call for boiler breakdowns, so I can be home for a few hours and then back out again in the evening. A lot of people can’t take time off work and will wait until they get back home to call me. It can be frustrating, but it comes with the territory.”

22 PROUD to be a Professional Why did you choose a career in the plumbing and heating industry? I originally wanted to be a mechanic, having spent many happy days in my youth repairing bicycles before moving on to motorbikes and cars. However, when I left school in 1981 the economy was weak and jobs were scarce. My friends had been on Government training schemes, so I did the same, working for a local plumber for six months. Looking back, this was a great scheme, which should perhaps be resurrected. The Government paid my wages for the entire period; I liked the job, the employer liked me and I was offered an apprenticeship following my initial placement, so everyone was a winner. I’m not aware of any schemes right now where this level of Government support is available, which is a real shame. What’s been your career path? As part of my apprenticeship, I completed both the City & Guilds Craft Certificate and the Advanced Craft Certificate in Plumbing. For achieving six Distinctions in my Advanced Craft Certificate, I was nominated for a Gold medal through the Worshipful Company of Plumbers. While I was

Steve Willis Continuing our new series of columns from members of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, Steve Willis, Managing Director of Steve Willis Training, explains why he is proud to be a plumbing professional.

ultimately unsuccessful, being selected was an achievement I am still extremely proud of. Following this, I went on to complete an HNC in Building Studies and CIOB examinations before undertaking a degree in Professional Education, which I completed at Brighton University. I am now the MD of a business with over 50 employees, which just goes to show how an apprenticeship can get you started on a positive career path. What is a typical day like for you in your current role? Right now, I’m predominantly office based, working mostly from the Burgess Hill, West Sussex, training centre and occasionally

the Portchester, Hampshire centre. My role is as diverse as the business, encompassing everything from overseeing financial matters and compliance with awarding organisation requirements to dayto-day directorship and supporting my management team. I set up Steve Willis Training from scratch in the year 2000. We currently have around 240 apprentices going through our centres, with an excellent success rate. It’s now a thriving business that supports the local economy in both geographical locations, which is extremely satisfying. What are the main benefits of being a CIPHE member? I joined the CIPHE in 1983 because

of the professional recognition I was awarded through the CIPHE and the Engineering Council. I think it’s important to note that the CIPHE is a professional body, not a trade association. For this reason, members have to meet certain criteria to join. While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee ongoing competence or compliance with the CIPHE’s Code of Professional Standards, it certainly reduces the risk of non-compliance. The CPD and e-learning support available to all members is particularly good. The CIPHE also has a robust policy for dealing with membership infringements, while recognising that there are two sides to every story in terms of customer complaints. There are rogue customers as well as rogue plumbers! What do the words ‘Proud to be a Professional’ mean to you? Most people have worked hard to attain qualifications and associated professional body memberships, so I think they deserve to be members of organisations like the CIPHE and wear the badge with pride. I also believe it’s a good idea for members who are interfacing with the general public to include the CIPHE logo on their

van, headed paper, workwear, etc to provide added reassurance for customers. How do you think careers in the plumbing and heating industry could be made more attractive to young people? This will take many years to change and it has to start in schools. Are schools giving the right career advice? Are they retaining students on A level programmes when an apprenticeship is more suitable? Careers advisors need to understand that a plumber or heating engineer must have a certain level of academic ability, as the job comes with considerable responsibilities. There has also been a mentality that the less able students should be channelled towards plumbing, which is an outdated and naive practice. We need to continue to keep unbiased careers education, information, advice and guidance in schools to ensure young people are choosing post 16 routes that are the most appropriate in relation to their career aspirations and plans. We still speak to too many parents and young people who have tried something else before an apprenticeship, not having realised it was even an option.

24 Training Update Discover the future of off-gas heating

Help after the fire After a fire swept through a building housing the plumbing and heating courses at Swindon College, Adey Professional Heating Solutions stepped in to help. To bridge the gap in training, Adey arranged for one of its fully kitted-out roadshow vehicles to pay a visit for some handson tuition. Groups of Level 2 students were given a talk on best practice boiler maintenance and protection from technical support trainer Colin Yearp. The students then completed a short test, with prizes for the most correct answers. Each

student also received a water treatment education pack. The company also made a donation of a MagnaCleanse system flushing kit, a MagnaClean Professional2 filter and bottles of MC1+ and MC3+ chemicals. These will be used by the students for practical work once the repairs have been completed. “When we heard about the fire we wanted to help,” says Adey’s Haimish Mead. “Supporting young people is something we’re passionate about and this was an opportunity to support the college during a difficult time.”

Beginning in May, Grant will be hosting a series of technical evenings at a number of venues throughout the UK. Installers who attend will learn more about the latest Grant products in both the oil fired and renewables sectors. Display models of the company’s new Aerona³ heat pump, VortexBlue oil boiler and VortexAir hybrid unit will be present at each of the events, providing an opportunity for attendees to gain hands on experience. “Whether installers want

The search is on for Plumber of the Year! Looking to highlight the best talents in the plumbing industry, JT, Bristan and Plumb Center have teamed up to search for another worthy recipient of the Plumber of the Year title. Here, we meet last year’s winner and find out how you can enter the 2016 competition.

How to enter Entering this year’s competition couldn’t be easier. Simply visit the website (www.ukplumberoftheyear.com) and fill in the entry form either for yourself or for a person you are nominating, and you will receive an application form by email straightaway. The competition will be judged by a panel of experts from JT, Bristan and Plumb Center. Plumbers will need to come armed with the tools and knowledge to show they’re worthy of being crowned the best in their field and winning the ultimate prize pot. Deadline for all entries is midnight on Sunday 19th June 2016.

Big prizes!

T

he 2016 UK Plumber of the Year competition is now open for entries as the search begins again to find the pride of UK plumbing. The brainchild of bathroom giants JT, Bristan and Plumb Center, the industry competition aims to recognise the remarkable level of talent from plumbers across the UK, with a big prize fund awarded to the worthy winner. The competition was first launched last year where a nationwide search found Josh Colbert (pictured above), a multi-skilled plumber from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, as the worthy winner of the inaugural UK Plumber of the Year competition.

Top of the tops

for the trade, his ambition and forward-thinking, and was awarded with the title of the 2015 UK Plumber of the Year competition. Speaking of his win, Josh said: “Winning last year came as a complete shock – I couldn’t believe it when I got the call! I am so grateful for not only the reward itself and amazing prizes that came with it, but the fantastic media exposure I received, which generated new opportunities for my business. This is something every plumber should get involved with in 2016.” Now in its second year, the UK Plumber of the Year competition recognises the very best knowledge, service and passion in the industry and is calling for entries from plumbers and nominations from members of the public nationwide.

After being inundated with entries, the judging panel selected 10 finalists based on their applications who then embarked on a voting campaign to get as much support as possible to make the final interview stage with the five plumbers who received the most votes making it through. Stewart Norris from Boston, David Murray from Edinburgh, Paul Clarke from Billericay, Leigh Hattersley from Stoke-on-Trent and Josh Colbert from Huntington came to Bristan HQ for an interview session to impress the judges. Josh, 24, impressed the judging panel in the final session of the competition (l-r) Richard Redfern (Wolseley Category Director, Plumbing), Sarah Holey (Bristan Channel with his skill set, passion Manager, Trade Merchants) and John Schofield (Just Trays Sales and Marketing Director)

ENERGY EFFICIENT Products 29

The ongoing drive to improve efficiency Tim Pollard, Head of Sustainability at Plumb Center, explores the number of energy efficient products in the market that can help reduce heating bills and deliver energy efficiency without great expense or complicated installation.

W

hen people talk about cutting energy bills it seems to me that most focus on reducing electricity bills and overlook the importance of implementing products and systems that combat escalating heating costs. The average energy usage for heating and hot water in a typical home is 80%, leaving only 20% to electricity consumption. With these figures, it seems surprising Tim Pollard, Plumb Center’s that we are so willing to Head of Sustainability turn off plug sockets and use energy efficient light bulbs but more reluctant to invest in energy efficient heating products and systems. This tendency to drive energy efficiency through electrical products has led to some installers neglecting the variety of energy efficient heating products and systems available to their customers.

Heating controls

Heating controls can save up 40% on a home’s heating bill

the pipes more evenly radiate heat, making them more cost effective. Insulation first Despite general perception, UFH is now possible to install For most homes, insulation is the most practical and cost in most homes and is an accessible alternative to radiators. effective way of becoming more energy efficient. Even While the initial installation may seem expensive, the with a state-of-the-art heating system, if the home does long term energy savings outweigh the up-front expense. not have sufficient and appropriate insulation then the It is important not to dismiss the merits of UFH due to promised benefits from an energy efficient heating system misconceptions regarding complexity, as pipework can be installed, filled and tested in one will be lost. Installing the correct insulation operation. material will reduce heating and cooling “Smart technology However, if UFH is not feasible, costs and improve comfort. For the installer, for example if the homeowner this should be one of the first considerations can lead to reduced prefers to maintain the floor surface when discussing energy efficiency with the energy bills and material, there are a variety of new customer. carbon savings” high efficiency radiators that can be Heat emitters used. Radiators are becoming smaller Typically when we think of heat emitters and are often fitted with fins inwe immediately think of radiators. Nowadays underfloor between the double panel, increasing the surface heating (UFH) is becoming increasingly more popular with area available to give off heat. Those with lower the homeowner. The energy saving Vito Eco radiator from Stelrad

29.indd 1

Don’t forget that energy is needed to produce hot water and the more hot water we use, the higher the energy bill. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that about 21% of a typical gas heated household’s heating bill is from heating the water for showers, baths and hot water from the tap – an average annual cost of about £140. One obvious culprit for escalating energy bills are showers fed from the hot water systems. Installing an aerated showerhead, such as the Mira Eco (pictured), can provide a simple solution to lower cost showering. The showerhead works by delivering larger droplets filled with air – reducing the amount of water used by up to 75% against an ordinary showerhead. Priced at just £35, this is a simple and easy to fit solution to reducing hot water consumption.

With the introduction of the Energy-related Product directive (ErP) last September, heating controls have become an important energy saving measure in the home. Simply fitting the correct heating controls can save up to 40% off a home’s heating bill. Thermostats are a simple way to regulate temperature by setting a target temperature and preventing overheating and wasted energy. They are often an inexpensive way to gain greater control of your heating temperature. For example, a simple mechanical thermostat costs less than £10. Wireless and even ‘digistats’ are also now available. It is important to note that you don’t need to stay within your boiler brand, as most connections are standardised allowing a third party option for every boiler. For the installer, this allows greater flexibility, as they can fit a thermostat from the brand they’re most familiar with. Thermostatic radiator valves are another simple and affordable solution to controlling room temperature and reducing energy bills, with individual TRVs starting from just £6. According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing and correctly using a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves could save £80-£165 per annum and 330kg680kg carbon dioxide. These findings give the installer a ‘tool kit’ of tangible benefits to present to the customer when recommending energy efficient products.

Smart controls Connected homes and smart controls are the biggest trend in today’s market, with many homeowners requesting smart controls – in one report between 50 and 80% of people expressed interest in ‘smart homes’. Consumer campaigns led by Hive and Nest have also increased consumer demand due to their aesthetic appeal. Smart controls are great for modern lifestyle – remote access and greater control allow the homeowner to manage heating more efficiently, leading to potential yearly energy savings. While the initial cost of these products is greater, the long term benefits are clear – smart technology can lead to reduced energy bills and greater carbon savings.

Business opportunity With heating and hot water dominating energy usage, installers need to be aware of energy efficient products that can save the homeowner money and reduce their carbon emissions. Energy efficiency isn’t a fad – it’s an important issue and installers need to embrace this shift when delivering a specification to the customer. If you can equip yourself with the relevant knowledge regarding energy efficiency then you’ll have the opportunity to expand your business, impress customers by reducing their energy bills and increase referral business from satisfied customers. www.plumbcenter.co.uk

Taking account of the whole system The energy efficiency rating of a home depends on more than just installing a high efficiency boiler. Jon Phillips, Head of Product Management at Baxi, advises on a whole system approach to ensure that the boiler continues to perform at peak efficiency.

Boiler access via an app Viessmann’s new Vitodens 100-W and 111-W gas condensing boilers now have internet connectivity, enabling remote control by homeowners and remote performance monitoring by installers. They also have a backlit LCD touch display for easier controllability and a wider modulation ratio of up to 1:6 for improved boiler efficiency and longevity. All 100 range models installed since 2007 can be wifi-enabled with a control accessory that costs £60, on sale from September. Unlike other boiler apps, which

The app allows users to set the boiler’s daily programme and to adjust the boiler’s functions, improving comfort and convenience, and saving energy costs. This same technology allows installers to remotely monitor their boiler installations in one place with the Vitoguide digital service.

a key role when it comes to explaining that central heating systems need ongoing care and attention. If a system is drained, for example to fit a new bathroom, then it will need to be topped up again with inhibitor. Installers should also check that any existing radiators are the correct size for the rooms they are heating, and that they are still working well. Insulation is key, across the home as well as around hot water cylinders and pipework.

Don’t forget renewables Although they’re not included in the Building Regulations, it’s still important to consider renewable and low carbon technologies. For example, even conventional boilers can be made more efficient through fitting flue gas heat recovery units, which significantly reduce energy usage and water consumption. They recover latent heat from the flue gases that are normally expelled into the atmosphere, which is then recycled and used to pre-heat water coming into the boiler from the cold mains supply, reducing the energy required. Ultimately, advice and guidance from the installer can play a key role in helping the homeowner come to a decision on what products and extras to invest in. By looking at the heating system as a whole, rather than just the boiler, both the installer and the homeowner will be able to reap the benefits and be better placed in the housing market should the recommendations from Policy Exchange ever be enforced. www.baxi.co.uk

On demand with low NOx

112

Aimed at the commercial market, Rinnai’s Infinity HDC1600i/e low NOx, gasfired continuous flow water heater delivers up to 37 litres per minute of hot water on demand. In sum, that’s over 2000 litres per hour with efficiencies of up to 107%. The HDC1600i/e Low NOx is an on-demand hot water heating unit – suitable for natural gas or LPG – and it has no storage cylinder. This means that there is no waste from constantly reheating a stored body of water for when there is demand.

The Infinity HDC1600i/e features modulation at 14:1, 56.6 to 4.0kW, on both natural gas and LPG, and operates at a flow rate

as low as 1.5 litres/min. Thanks to the appliance’s high modulation, this ensures that the optimum amount of energy is used to heat the water, minimising waste and maximising system efficiencies. The down firing pre-mix burner guarantees low NOx emissions and achieves the low emission level of 30mg/kWh, which will comply and surpass NOx requirements in the EU Eco-design directive, which comes into effect in 2018. Delivering optimum performance Modern gas boilers are able to offer high levels of efficiency, but is it possible to provide further energy savings? Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, discusses what more can be done to achieve the optimum performance.

D

espite the best efforts of manufacturers, merchants and installers to promote renewables, last year saw a significant withdrawal of support for alternative heating technologies with Green Deal being shelved and a reduction in available funding for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The consequence is that condensing boilers look set to retain their place as the prevailing method for heating the country’s homes. Martyn Bridges The latest generation of appliances has developed into a highly efficient and effective one. However, many homeowners are as concerned as ever with conserving energy and saving on heating bills, with the task of getting yet more efficiency from a domestic heating system falling at the feet of the heating engineer. In response, manufacturers have opened up a multitude of options – providing ways of improving the efficiency of a heating system, as well providing added sales opportunities.

Flush and filter Increasingly refined components and smaller water passages mean that it does not take a great amount of sediment from an unclean heating system to clog up or restrict the waterways in a modern condensing boiler. As a result, the importance of performing a full system cleanse to keep an appliance running as efficiently as possible shouldn’t be underestimated. Once the initial system flush has been performed, adding a system filter will complement this process. By collecting any contaminates that may not have been removed during

the flushing process, this will help to ensure the long-term protection of an appliance. Our latest Greenstar System Filter has been designed with feedback from over 200 heating engineers, meaning it is as attractive from an installation point of view as it is to an energy conscious homeowner. Available as a 22mm model or 28mm variant compatible with larger boilers and systems, our system filter boasts a larger, more powerful internal magnet which safeguards the boiler and wider system components. Meanwhile, installation and servicing have been made simpler than ever thanks to a bi-directional flow, a wide top opening, and a detachable body.

Heat recovery Flue gas heat recovery units have been around in relatively small numbers for a number of years, but have been sold principally in new build projects. As these units contain no moving parts and are relatively easy to both install and maintain, they provide installers with a simple and straightforward way of improving energy efficiency for their customers. Heat recovery systems make it possible for typical domestic properties to achieve savings of between 300-400kWh of gas per year, and reduce CO2 emissions by around 6%. While the initial outlay for one of these units can be perceived as large – at least relative to the cost of the boiler – it is comparatively lower than some other carbon saving products for similarly impressive gains.

An energy efficient boiler is just one step to cutting heating bills

It is important to remember, however, that not every user is the same. This means heating engineers need to establish how they can best address their customer’s needs. With a wide range of accessories available, from smart controls with internet-connected functionality, to those which use interconnecting wires to connect to the timer, to other wireless options that use an RF signal instead, the main thing is for installers to look out for features which will provide the premium efficiency that will help homeowners to save money over the years.

Regular servicing

It is fair to say that while a boiler may be widely regarded as a distress purchase, regular servicing should be considered a vital part of the whole-house approach to warmth and efficiency. With annual boiler servicing not currently a legal Controls upgrade requirement for homeowners, a good deal of education Heating controls are another way in which high efficiency is needed to ensure that homeowners recognise the long appliances can be upgraded to deliver even better term benefits it could have for their heating system, and many manufacturers now performance. Get control whatever the weather The UK is known for its changeable weather – the cold snap in summer and the unexpected warm day in winter. Nigel Sanger, Technical Manager at JG Speedfit, considers the best ways to utilise heating control systems no matter the weather.

T

he Great British weather can be unpredictable, varied and rather frustrating, especially when it comes to adapting heating controls to ensure a household is warm enough in cold spells and comfortable in the summer months. So, how can home owners and installers ensure that the heating system they specify can keep up with April snow showers and an Indian summer? To combat the everNigel Sanger, JG Speedfit changing British weather, smarter heating systems are a must for those seeking to monitor, adapt and reduce energy usage. Smart thermostats are an important step towards creating efficient homes and helping consumers better manage their energy costs. Heating accounts for more than 60% of energy in the home, and with increasingly stringent legislation dictating the energy consumption of new properties, it is crucial that specifiers are considering lower carbon heating sources.

Rapid reaction

Smart thermostats are capable of adapting to the vagaries of the British weather while delivering energy efficiency

warm and welcoming environment in cold snaps or cool surroundings in warmer weather. Controls are more important in changeable weather; they enable a homeowner to maintain the desired temperature in a dwelling regardless of the outside conditions. As the temperatures drop the controls will react accordingly, helping to maintain a comfortable living space in the house and even allow for the differentiation of heating zones, bringing energy saving and efficiency to the system. This means that the “Smart thermostats main bedroom can maintain a steady temperature, while the living room can are an important offer instant warmth on returning home.

So what if we have an unexpected warm spell? Can heating controls be easily adjusted? The great thing about good controls is that they will recognise when the home needs heat and also when the home doesn’t need heat. If the home is comfortable without the heating on then the thermostats will recognise this. However, if the nights do get colder, the controls will also be able to quickly and effectively warm up a room, with the designated zones aiding in keeping costs and energy down.

JG Aura programmable thermostats respond to unexpected changes in the temperature to deliver heat efficiently

In the build-up to autumn, many controls offer more than one temperature setting that can be used at different times of the day or heating season. JG Aura’s programmable thermostats, for example, offer four different temperature levels: ‘high’ for periods where the user wants to be warm, such as getting out of bed or watching TV in the evening; ‘activity’ where the user is home but active with housework; and ‘low’ for periods where no one is home or at night. There is also a ‘frost’ level where the family is away on holiday and only want to prevent the home from freezing. All these levels are individually adjustable and the homeowner can use whichever ones they wish. Until recently, heating controls had changed little since the 1960s in the UK. However, now we have the opportunity to move forward in efficiency by controlling each room in the house individually. Combining this with group or app control makes this process very easy to set up or change. The large savings in energy will easily pay for the upgrades in a very short time compared with other forms of renewable technology.

Discover the perks of infrared heating Described as efficient, controllable and maintenance-free, Far infrared heaters are claimed to typically require almost 40% less energy than conventional electric heaters. Supplied by Herschel, Far infrared heating provides a solution for homes and commercial premises. Herschel says most electric heating requires around 45W/m³, but infrared heating needs only about 25W/m³. Unlike electrical heaters, which heat the air mainly through convection, infrared heaters heat objects, including people and the fabric of the building, making use of the thermal mass of the structure to store the heat. This radiant form of heating means energy is used efficiently and the heating effect is more comfortable. The infrared heaters are available as ultra slimline wall or ceiling mounted panels and as commercial space heating units and outdoor patio models. www.herschel-infrared.com

40 Energy EFFICIENT Products Small scale CHP Better hot water tap delivery Get Net benefits

As part of its energy efficient heating, cooling, and hot water technologies, Bosch Commercial and Industrial has extended its Combined Heat and Power (CHP) range with the addition of a new module aimed at smaller commercial applications. The new Bosch 12kWe model has been designed to offer the benefits of CHP to light commercial applications, such as leisure centres and nursing homes. The module maximises efficiency levels and provides a low-cost supply of heating, hot water and electricity. In addition, CO2 and NOx emissions are reduced as less gas is required to generate the same co-generative thermal and electrical output as a conventional utility network and local boiler solution. Shaun Mansbridge, Business Development Director, says: “The changes to legislation and building regulations continue to offer consultants

and stakeholders more opportunities to consider and adopt low carbon solutions. The introduction of our new CHP 12kWe module helps to increase the number of end users who can benefit from reduced energy costs as well as making a positive impact on the environment with lower emissions.” Bosch offers a free CHP feasibility study for any potential site to ensure the system is precisely sized and maximum efficiency is achieved. For businesses looking for an instantaneous hot water system that also delivers energy efficiency, Zip offers its InLine system. It incorporates bare wire heating to ensure hot water is delivered instantly and with efficiency. Zip says its product differs from traditional instantaneous water heating products where the heating element is enclosed in a heat exchanger because the bare wire InLine has a heating element directly immersed in the water flow path. This allows heat to be transmitted directly to the water, for greater efficiency and a quicker heat-up time, typically less than two seconds. In addition, because it only heats water as it’s drawn off, there is no standing heat loss – just an unlimited supply of instantaneous hot water. This also reduces the risk of Legionnaires’ disease-causing bacteria being present within the system, as there is no water held at an elevated temperature.

Products in Action Chemical treatment a hit In a recent boiler installation at a three bedroom property in Waterlooville, Kingston Plumbing & Heating turned to a combination of Fernox Cleaner F3, Protector F1 and the TF1 Compact Filter to precommission a customer’s central heating system. Nick Kingston was tasked with fitting a new boiler in the loft. After relocating the pipework, he powerflushed the system with Fernox Cleaner F3 to remove sludge and improve the cleanliness and efficiency of the system. The central heating system was then dosed using Fernox Protector F1, a BuildCert and ESTR approved inhibitor, to prevent further corrosion and limescale deposition. Nick

Alpha turns to its own kit When the heating system at Alpha Heating Innovation’s head office was at the end of its life, the company recognised how its own Ares Tec commercial system would provide the ideal replacement

for the non-condensing cast iron boilers. The company installed an Ares Tec 200kW model complete with safety kit and plate heat exchanger. Justin Jearum from Alpha comments: “The old system

was extremely inefficient, particularly for such a large space where a variety of different needs had to be met. As the building’s owner, we needed to ensure that those that occupy the building, including our own employees, have a comfortable working environment.” Alongside the boiler, Alpha’s safety kit was installed. It ensures that boiler pressures are kept within specific tolerances, an additional overheat stat adding to the high level of safety. The new Ares Tec is controlled via Alpha’s BM8 zone manager. In addition, Alpha is able to plug into the boiler via a laptop to gain system data. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Multi-entry solution ensures an easy fit With replacement installations making up 80% of electric shower sales within the UK, ease of installation should be an important consideration in any purchasing decision. Nick Mawby, Category Manager at Redring, offers some advice on how to make the most of the advantages offered by the latest multi-entry showers.

R

ight now, market conditions couldn’t be healthier for UK installers to fit showers. AMA’s 2016 UK Bathroom Products Market Report (see below) indicates that the bathroom market grew by 5% last year and market value is set to increase by 14% by 2019. With this in mind, installers should be taking great interest in choosing the right types of showers to make the most of this growth in demand for bathroom and shower installations. When you consider that 80% of electric showers purchased are for replacement installations, flexibility, universal capability and plumbing fitting compatibility are all essential elements to keep in mind when choosing the right shower unit. There is little doubt that multi-entry options offer considerable time saving benefits for installers, but they also allow them to carry out the best possible quality installation.

Multiple choice Multi-entry showers have become more commonplace in the bathroom market within the last year or so and have revolutionised installers’ workload, so why are they making such an impact? A multi-entry electric shower, as opposed to many traditional units, is one that offers multiple plumbing and electrical entry point options when siting the unit on the bathroom wall. With traditional showers, entry points may be limited to left or right hand only, so replacement installations have typically required drilling to align the plumbing and wiring connections, which not only takes significant time, but also disrupts the tiling and aesthetics of the bathroom too, both of which end users can do without. This is why multi-entry showers present an ideal solution, as they reduce the need to re-engineer plumbing, drill through tiles and amend the electrical wiring of the mains feed.

Key features When choosing a multi-entry electric shower, it’s important to look out for a number of key design features that will make installation even easier and will deliver a better quality result. Firstly, look at the total number of entry points available on the unit in question. The higher the number, the more universal the shower unit will be. This makes it easier to replace different branded showers, whilst also reducing the need to drill or reposition the new shower from the original fitting position. For the plumbing aspect of the job, you should be looking

UK shower market report The latest shower market report from AMA Research shows that the majority of UK households now have at least one shower in their property, with market penetration of around 89% of homes. The replacement market is therefore the major growth area. “There has been a continued growth in the popularity of showering over the last decade and showers have become an essential fixture in the modern home,” says Hayley Thornley, Research Manager at AMA Research. “While showers are now installed as standard in most new build homes, as the market matures it is the replacement market that is likely to hold the most potential for growth. An increasing number of shower products are now designed specifically for retrofit purposes.” The report can be ordered online at www.amaresearch.co.uk

The Redring Expressions Revive electric shower offers eight water and six cable entry points, plus an ‘A’ rating for energy efficiency

at eight entry points to ensure optimum versatility, ideally two at the top, two at the bottom, two on the rear and two at the side. This range of entry points almost guarantees that the existing pipework can stay in place, with little or no disruption to the bathroom’s décor. In terms of electrical cable entry, you should expect the shower to have both left and right hand entry options, ideally six: two at the top, two at the bottom and two from the rear. Again, this adaptability reduces the need for any re-wiring of the power feed into the shower.

Extra space In addition to the number and position of the electrical and water entry points, there are several other design features that will improve speed of installation and the aesthetics of the job. To deliver the biggest possible working area when undertaking a replacement installation, it is important that the shower’s back plate is not only uncluttered, but also that the bottom third has the ability to clip off. This gives installers the maximum working space for tool access, making the job much less fiddly and reducing the time needed to complete the installation. Twin terminal blocks are also an important feature to consider, as they allow electrical connection into the shower unit from either the right or left hand side without having to relocate terminal blocks or replace cable. A shower without twin terminations would have a significant negative impact on the flexibility of the retrofit, meaning the installer would be required to undertake more work and disrupt the bathroom space. The absence of both left and right hand connection options would essentially undermine the very notion of a multi-entry shower, as it would negate the key benefits in terms of installation versatility.

to left as required, and vice versa. A sliding top riser rail bracket giving the flexibility to position the rail fixing points to match existing drilled holes. From an aesthetic standpoint, high quality chrome accessories can also add a touch of class for any bathroom. Finally, bearing all of these points in mind, whilst multientry seems like an easy decision to make for installers when selecting the best retro-fit solution, it is important to make sure the product selected has all of the features as highlighted above. Multi-entry showers have already revolutionised the installer’s workflow in terms of time saving and job execution, but to get the maximum benefit, it is important to make sure the shower is as universally adaptable as possible. www.redring.co.uk

Well connected Another key point to consider is how compatible the replacement multi-entry shower is with the various plumbing fitting options. Ideally, you should only select a shower that has the ability to connect both standard compression fittings, but also the increasingly popular push-fit connections. Also, to guarantee the best possible versatility, the multi-entry shower should ideally come with some helpful accessories such as a plumbing plain shank to compression adapter that can be moved from right side

All about trays: what you ought to know The technical service department at Mira gets its share of questions from installers looking to ensure they provide a perfect fit for their customers. Here, Mira Showers provides a summary of some of the most frequently asked questions about its shower trays.

W

hen it comes to installing a bathroom, most plumbers will be dealing with customers who are particularly attentive to the process, so it’s a good idea to approach the job armed with as much information as possible. Here, Mira Showers covers the most frequent pitfalls and queries over installation to make the job that little bit easier. Q: What is the BioCote finish sometimes found on shower trays. What is it and what does it do? A: The purpose of BioCote is to reduce bacterial and mould growth to practically nothing. It is an antibacterial agent, based on silver ion technology, which is actually incorporated into the material for life so that it can never wash away like other forms of protection. It reduces bacterial and mould growth by up to 99.9%.

any manufacturing tolerances in the spirit level. The closer to a ‘zero error’ in the tray level, then the easier it will be to fit the enclosure, and the better the watertight fit between the tray and wall. The recess in the tray, that is, where the user stands, has a ‘fall’ towards the waste. The top edges of the tray also have a built-in slope towards the tray. If the tray is not correctly installed, water will pool at edges or corners of the tray. Beware: a common mistake is to take the level from the middle recess of the tray – rather than from the top edges – with the fall giving a misleading result. At best, water will pool in the tray and, at worst, especially if the tray is leaning back towards the wall, the enclosure can’t be fitted at all. Please check the ‘out of level’ tolerance, or maximum adjustment of your shower enclosure, to ensure a perfect installation. Q: What if the customer’s acrylic shower tray is accidentally chipped or scratched. Is it possible to repair it? A: Chips, scratches and superficial cracks (not one that has penetrated the tray) can be treated with special repair kits. Search online to order one or find a stockist.

A perfectly level tray will make the whole installation easier

Q: It’s oviously important to ensure that a shower tray and enclosure are level, but exactly how level does the tray need to be? A: As level as you can make it, because this will simplify your installation. Two level measurements should be made at 90º to each other. Aim to get the error to less than 2.5mm. Turn the spirit level horizontally by 180º to reveal

Q: What is the benefit of riser legs when fitting trays? A: The dedicated riser legs can be fitted to the underside of the tray and allow you to raise the tray off the floor, make space for a waste and simplify getting the tray perfectly level. This is especially useful when installing the tray on a solid floor, where the waste cannot easily be buried. Accurate adjustments can then be made Riser legs allow accurate adjustment by raising or lowering the legs as required. Q: There are tray installations where the riser legs would be obstructed by pipework that runs along one wall under the tray. What can be done, if anything? A: Offset leg adaptors allow the adjustable legs to be installed offset to the tray where the pipework runs. These adaptors increase the gap between wall and leg from 20 to 85mm.

How to achieve a minimalist finish With semi-framed design and exposed glass edge doors, the Synergy range by Ideal Standard offers a collection of contemporary enclosures, wetrooms, walkin panels and bath screens to suit every bathroom. Choices range from space saving enclosures to simple but elegant bath screens and wetroom panels. Synergy enclosures are semi-frameless, designed to offer maximum showering space. are as practical as they are stylish. The collection is also designed to be power shower proof. There is also a range of sizes across the

Q: How do I ensure that a shower won’t leak between the shower tray and the tiled wall, as I can’t believe silicone is sufficient? A: The option is to choose a tray with an integrated tiling upstand. A tiling upstand is typically a 22mm integral vertical extension to two, three or even four sides of a shower tray that, during installation, allows the tiles to overlap it, providing a watertight finish between the tray and the finished wall surface. The four upstand versions provide the option for a framed door to sit within the top of the tray to prevent any leaks. Check that the framed door will clear the tiling upstand. In new or heavily refurbished properties, upstands also have the huge benefit of forgiving any settlement of the floor upon which the tray sits.

door styles of pivot, slider, quadrant, entry, infold and corner installations. The Synergy wetroom range of walk-in and

wetroom panels are available in nine different sizes to offer complete freedom in the creation of a full or partial wetroom installation. The frameless panels have a wall profile design which allows for a silicone free finish and offers clean lines. Additionally, this new wall profile design is said to make installation quick and easy, allowing adjustments to be made to the glass both horizontally and vertically, avoiding tile joints and wall joists. Q: What is a tiling upstand strip? A: This is a T-shaped joint that converts a ‘non tiling upstand tray’ to provide a tiling upstand. It simplifies installation by eliminating the need to rebate a tray into a solid wall or when there is a void behind a stud partition wall. The T-shape hooks behind the plasterboard and tray and sealant holds the three pieces together, so making a secure connection. A tray with an integrated tiling upstand is likely to provide a better long term watertight seal.

A tray with a tiling upstand gives a better watertight seal

Q: Which type of waste water trap should I choose? A: The preference should be for top access. This means that the householder can access the trap from above in order to clean it out. This is a more user-friendly option than a waste that has to be accessed from the underside of the tray, with the associated mess. www.mirashowers.co.uk

Electric tech now an even better bet Electric showers have improved greatly over the last few years. Lisa Ward, Product Group Manager at Bristan, explains how new features and advancements benefit both installers and consumers.

I

n times gone by, electric showers have often been seen as a ‘problem product’. They have historically been designed for practicality over style, and often associated with a clinical aesthetic – not very appealing for the style-savvy homeowner. Meanwhile, the necessity of matching existing water and cable entry points to a new shower meant installers were restricted to either refitting the same model or potentially having to adjust the pipework. However, recent years have seen manufacturers evolve the humble electric to become a strong player in the showering market, both in terms of sleek, sophisticated looks, and also the practical considerations which have previously caused difficulties when it comes to fast-fits.

could also impact temperature control and the pressure relief function, plus, in the shower head could cause the spray to become distorted. Over time, limescale can even shorten the lifespan of an electric product.

Scale prevention

Bristan’s Glee electric shower features a digital temperature display and phased shutdown

riser rail with an adjustable bracket, which will cover the majority of previous fixing holes. This level of adjustability not only saves time for the installer, but also means they can carry electric models in their van, confident in the knowledge that it will be suitable for any replacement job.

Easy retrofit

Better looking

For any new installation in the home, consumers want as little disruption to their existing décor as possible. This is especially relevant when it comes to the bathroom, where changes to the plumbing or electrical connections can translate to an extensive retiling and redecorating job. In the past, this has caused serious complications, as many older units provided just two water inlets and two electrical cable entry points – the location of which often varied between models. However, with the new wave of easy-fit showers, these fitting issues have been washed away. Certain shower models now boast multiple electrical cable entry points for the ultimate in ease of installation. For example, our own electric shower range allows installers to choose between five water inlets and five electrical cable entry points, providing a huge amount of flexibility. In addition, the showers all have a footprint that will fit over the wall fixings of other manufacturers’ showers, as well as an extra-long 650mm

In today’s market, you don’t have to look far to find a sleek, slimline electric shower which bears no resemblance at all to the drab boxes of the past. This new streamlined generation offers consumers a choice of designs, colours, and looks which can easily rival their mixer counterparts. What’s more, for consumers with safety concerns, thermostatic electric showers that offer the same safeguard against scalding as a traditional mixer are now available. Alarmingly, each year around 20 people die and almost 600 suffer serious scald injuries caused by hot water. To alleviate this risk, thermostatic products maintain water supply temperatures at a safe level – compensating for changes when water is used elsewhere in the household. Furthermore, electrics have improved in terms of functionality too. Formerly, limescale was an inherent issue. The build-up of limescale could affect the heating element, meaning it would take more time and more energy to heat water. It

Today, installers can now recommend models with anti-limescale mechanisms. One such feature is phased shutdown technology. This ensures that once the shower is turned off, cold water is drawn in to cool the heater elements and prevents limescale adhesion. The phased shutdown feature helps to reduce limescale build-up. Water still sits within it, but it’s cold rather than hot. So not only does phased shutdown prevent limescale build-up, it also prevents the next shower user from getting a blast of extremely hot water. In recent years, electric shower manufacturers have also introduced rub-clean handsets to make cleaning easier for the consumer. For further product preservation, upcoming models will offer a performance indicator as well as an anti-limescale safeguard, which will flag when a shower needs cleaning in order to keep it in the best condition possible.

Energy savers Finally, electric showers only heat exactly as much water as is needed, avoiding unnecessary energy usage, which makes them environmentally friendlier, as well as more cost effective when it comes to utility bills. With a raft of new, smarter, designs available, electric showers are no longer a second-choice option. Ideal for ensuites, and reliable even in the case of a boiler breakdown, it is now easier than ever for installers to get customers switched on to the benefits of electric showers. SHOWERS & Enclosures Advertisement feature

A bright forecast for electric showers Electric showers have gone through a resurgence in design innovation, to make both installation and use a welcome breeze, explains James Dadd, Marketing Director at AKW.

A

lthough April is typically known for its grey skies and downpours there’s a brighter outlook for homes across the country thanks to innovation from leading manufacturers in the design of electric showers. A popular option, electric showers are universally considered to be highly reliable and are especially suitable for households with multiple showers or boiler restrictions. At AKW, we applied our vast experience in both the public and private sectors along with real insight from installers and end-users to develop the next generation of electric showers. Our iShower range has already proved hugely popular with both installers and end-users alike, providing a choice between three sleek, modern units that have been cleverly designed to deliver advanced controllability to your customers, yet fast and simple installation.

Relaxed retro-fitting A common challenge you’ll face when fitting a replacement system is the additional work required once the existing unit is removed. There is almost always a mark left to show the footprint of the previous shower, so when it comes to fitting a new unit additional tiling or touch ups are almost always required. This slows down the installation process, potentially costing the installer time that could be spent on other jobs. Each unit in the iShower range is designed to have a universal size and shape, which covers almost every manufacturer’s model. This completely covers the footprint of the old unit, reducing or in some cases removing the need for any extra works. In addition, when replacing an old system with a new

one, compatibility can often be an obstacle. Units can often differ in cabling and pipework between manufacturers which can again slow down the installation process or produce the requirement for additional parts. Uniformity was a key goal in the design of iShower, which has been developed to specifically work with existing cable and pipework. Having sufficient entry points for both electricity and water is key to ensuring that installation is hassle-free. With eight electrical entry points and eight water inlet entry points, each iShower unit enables the use of existing wiring and pipework and provides the flexibility to enter cable or the inlet pipe from left or right, on the top, the rear, the side and the bottom of the unit. These features help to overcome positioning limitations, which not only speeds up the installation process but also provides your customer with more flexibility in the design of their bathroom.

An option for all needs The iShower range includes three models, providing a solution whatever your customers’ needs. A mechanical shower with a minimalist look, iSure is an ideal solution for replacement installations, suitable for all types of showering areas and rooms at a price appropriate to all budgets. Simplicity is at its core with an easy push power button and simple white dials to control both temperature and flow. iTherm combines the modern style of iSure with intuitive design in a thermostatic shower. LED temperature and flow indicators ensure the perfect thermostatically

stabilised shower every time, with independent temperature and flow controls and an easy push power button that maintains the settings for the next shower. iTherm also includes advanced shutdown features to enhance safety and prolong unit life. Auto shutdown shuts off the unit if the cold water supply fails and/or if the iTherm has been running continuously for 30 minutes, while phased shutdown flushes all residual hot water from the unit and hose to make it safe for the next user and to reduce limescale.

Smart showering The most advanced model in the range, iCare (pictured above), combines the latest digital shower technology with additional safety features to give you ultimate installation flexibility and your customers a unique showering experience. iCare boasts a discreet wireless interface between the shower and AKW digital waste pumps. Replacing the traditional flow meter on the pump connection, the interface is able to communicate directly with the pump unit and thereby reduce the need for electrical wiring between shower and pump. A world-first, iCare offers your customers the ability to activate the shower and modify both temperature and flow via wireless remote control or an iPhone app. Additional safety features to control water temperature and usage, along with sleek rounded corners and a sensory user interface, make iCare the unrivalled solution for households with varying living requirements, providing a seamless mix of safety, style and smart technology. Each iShower unit is available with the choice of 8.5kW or 9.5kW, IP45 safety rated options, with iCare also available in a 10.5kW therapeutic option. With market-leading three year guarantees, iShower is available direct from AKW or from leading merchants. For further information, please visit our website: www. akw-ltd.co.uk/ishower

Bar mixer shower has everything you need With the launch of the Dene Bar Mixer, Triton Showers is looking to show installers how easy this all-in-one-box solution is to fit. Here, Steve Saunders, Triton’s Senior Technical Manager, takes us through the steps from start to finish.

D

ene Bar Mixers are a range of thermostatically controlled showers for all types of domestic water systems and provide installers with everything they need to complete a professional job in just one box. For new bathrooms, Dene mixers are provided with a disposable pipe guide tool to mark out holes for pre-drilling walls to slot over the pipe tails, holding them in position to gauge where to cut

the pipe. Plus, each shower within the range includes a riser rail with adjustable distance between the wall brackets, which is particularly useful when undertaking a retrofit job. For complete flexibility, the range of six units offers a choice of high flow, eco or cool touch bar mixers; one lever sequential and two lever concentric mixers; as well as diverter options from a manual bath shower mixer to a bar diverter, where

a deluge shower head and a practical handset are both supplied. Each comes with WRAS approval, certifying its compliance with Water Fitting Regulations. Incorporating pushfit pipe connectors, these showers allow for simple installation on both copper and plastic pipe tails. Each model in the Dene collection is covered by a five year parts and labour guarantee.

2 1 The Dene thermostatic bar mixer comes with a riser kit, shower hose, 3 mode showerhead and bar mixer fixings for exposed pipe tails.

5

Complete the supply plastic or copper pipework to the mixer bracket mounting points, leaving an excess of pipe protruding out of the wall after tiling is finished. Then cut the pipe tails to the correct length between 28 to 30mm. The supplied pipe guide tool can be used throughout the installation.

Lock the fixing plates to the push-fit connectors using the supplied grub screws.

CHIMNEYS & Flues 51

Get the most from wood burners With increasing interest in biomass heating, installers need to ensure that they fit the appropriate flues to maintain the optimum performance of the heat source. David Wright from Schiedel Chimney Systems highlights some of the key issues to be aware of.

T

he G o v e r n ment ’s R ene w a ble He at I nc ent i v e (RHI) scheme has brought about a ‘woody revolution’ in the domestic arena with a growing number of homeowners opting for renewable heating sources, such as biomass boilers and wood burning stoves, in a bid to cut their fuel bills, become non-reliant on depleting fossil fuels and take up a more hands-on David Wright, Residential ‘hunter’ approach to their Sales and Marketing Manager at Schiedel Chimney Systems household heating. In fact, wood burning stoves in particular are currently staking their claim in the UK’s heating market with a reported increase in popularity in urban areas as end users wake up to their high efficiencies, ease of use and cleanliness. It is also said that creating a feature fireplace can add up to 5% to the value of a property – a real plus for any homeowner looking to the future. With this increase in biomass, however, comes the issue of matching a boiler or stove with the correct flue system. Often these are treated as separate entities, but in order to optimise performance of the overall system, design and product specification should go hand-in-hand.

The basics The ‘rules’ for installing residential and commercial biomass boilers flue are different. Any appliance up to 50kW installed in a domestic dwelling should be installed in accordance with Part J of the Building Regulations and with the Town & Country Permitted Developments Act, Order G. Applications over 50kW require a designer/installer to adhere to the relevant regulations and standards, such as BSEN 15287 and BSEN 13384. Additionally, consideration to the Clean Air Act may be required. The flue could be a new insulated stainless flue pipe or an existing chimney. Where an existing chimney is to be brought back into use, it will need to be inspected for deterioration, and any remedial work required must be completed prior to the appropriately sized liner being installed. As a professional installer, it’s also worth checking if the homeowner requires planning permission (although this is not usually needed if all the work is internal). If the installation requires a flue to be sited outside, then it will need to meet the following requirements: • Flues on the rear side or side elevation of a building are allowed to a maximum of 1m above the highest part of the roof • If the building is listed or in a designated area even if you have permitted development rights, it is advisable to check with your local planning authority before a flue is fitted • In a conservation area or World Heritage site, the flue should not be fitted on the principal or side elevation if it would be visible from a highway

Best for biomass The best flue for any biomass system is one that can cope with some condensate, as well as being soot fire resistant. For example, on a steel system, installers should be looking for a product that has both a ‘W’ (wet) designation as well as a ‘G’, which covers soot fire resistance and means the product has been tested at 1000ºC for 30 minutes. For stoves and fireplaces, it is also important to choose a twin skin liner, as the single skin variety are only suitable for use with gas and oil appliances. Stainless steel flexible

51.indd 1

The Ignis Protect system for timber-framed buildings

The market for wood burning stoves continues to grow

liners are popular for use in buildings that do not have a chimney or on new extensions as a retrofit. Among their many attributes, they are lightweight and easy to handle, as well as offering a wide range of fittings – all of which either twist-lock or push-fit together, making installation very straightforward for installers.

A general all-round product that covers stoves, biomass appliances and open fires is our ICS twin wall insulated chimney system (which is also suitable for gas, oil and multi fuel). It is suitable for residential through to large commercial applications, with continuous operating temperatures up to 450°C and short-firing up to 550°C.

Traditional heat

Timber-frame

Masonry liners are ideal for open fires, wood and multi-fuel burners, such as those made from clay and pumice. Most commonly used on new builds, they can be retrofitted, but it is worth remembering that these chimney systems require a suitable foundation. Clay liners are manufactured from a specially selected blend of fire clays, in a range of sizes. They are best suited to dry, non-condensing conditions. Pumice is mixed with concrete as the aggregate. Schiedel Isokern pumice liners, for example, use 94% pumice aggregate. Made from volcanic rock, pumice is a particularly good insulator and in a double wall formation, such as Isokern DM (Double Module), its natural heat retaining qualities are amplified, with no need for additional insulation. Lightweight and available with a range of accessories, pumice is particularly well suited to stove installation. It’s also key to be mindful that when working on inglenook or non-standard projects, installers need to be aware that the diameter of the flue must be at least 15% of the cross sectional area of the fireplace opening.

With the number of timber-framed buildings on the rise in the UK, what options are available to installers considering wall penetrations? Connecting flue pipes must be positioned to avoid igniting combustible materials. In timber framed buildings it is essential that distance to combustibles is respected and a wall sleeve is used to protect the integrity of the building. The latest addition to our product range, Ignis Protect, has been specifically designed for this purpose and can be used without any additional protection for internal or external walls.

Ceramic systems Ceramic systems are suitable for wood, multi-fuel oil and gas. The inner ceramic liner is insulated with rock wool and contained in a preformed concrete block. The same modular size as masonry building blocks, ceramic chimneys are usually designed to bond into adjacent brick or block work. For a rock mineral wool system, it is recommended that liners and chimneys are tested and approved to BS EN1457-2 for low temperature applications with a WC rating (condensate resistance), as well as BS EN1457-1 for high temperature applications.

Careful consideration For the most part, boiler and stove manufacturers will provide advice on f lue sizing for their products, or chimney and f lue specialists, like Schiedel, should be able to provide chimney sizing to EN13384-1 & EN133842 and have specialist online calculators to help with specification. It has been said that biomass boilers are only as efficient as the f lue system installed, so it’s important to make sure you cover all areas! www.schiedel.co.uk

52 CHIMNEYS & Flues

Flue termination issues and how to resolve them With rules and regulations to be aware of and tricky boiler siting issues to overcome, flue termination can be a challenging part of any boiler installation. Here, Alan Mason of Keston highlights some of the potential solutions for problematic installations.

O

What about for commercial and light commercial applications? For applications that require larger outputs, the Heat 45 and 55 twin flue boilers can be installed on Keston’s specially designed frame and header kits in cascade. These kits can facilitate up to six boilers in cascade and they not only make installation easier, they also incorporate controls like outdoor sensors for weather compensation, delivering additional energy saving benefits as the flow and return and the low loss header in the kit are pre-insulated, which improves efficiency and reduces heat loss, as well as reducing installation time.

ne of the most common and certainly the most frustrating challenges faced by installers relates to flue termination and the stringent regulations regarding safety, environmental issues and neighbouring properties. Here are some of the questions we most frequently get asked at Keston: What are the main problems with flue termination? A major problem with flue termination occurs when boiler location options are limited, which is often the case in converted premises and listed buildings. In many cases, during an installation, there is no outside wall nearby for flue termination or the boiler must be sited a long distance from the flue outlet for aesthetic reasons. There are also strict regulations concerning pluming proximity to neighbouring properties. Further issues are encountered in applications such as listed buildings where the boiler siting options are limited and the work must comply with strict criteria outlined in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. How can you overcome some of these problems? One of the most effective solutions available for problematic installations are our Keston Combi 30 and 35 twin flue boilers. Although both twin flue and concentric f lue boilers function in the same way, insofar as both require an air intake pipe to draw air inside the boiler (and an exhaust pipe to remove the burnt waste gases), a twin f lue design allows longer flue runs – with a possible extension of up to 27m – thereby expanding the options available for boiler siting.

Installers will need to obtain the necessary core commercial qualifications to install boilers above 70kW

Modern appliances are capable of flue runs up to 21m from the boiler from an elevation of 1.5° (or 21m and around 3.5° for a heat only model). Consequently, these boilers can be easily installed in rooms that are not located near an outside wall and in challenging locations such as basement rooms, offering one of the most adaptable solutions for applications where flue termination might prove troublesome, and minimising downtime is a priority. This is great news for installers who can take advantage of this growing market by offering a boiler solution for any type of project, even the trickiest of installations.

Cost-effective flue solution The Wakaflex Uni-Outlet is the latest product from Klober, the Derbyshire based specialist in roof ventilation products and roofing accessories. Available in six diameters, from 25 to 125mm, it has been designed to provide a flue for gas boilers and can be used on roof pitches from 17.5 to 45°. It is made from durable heat, UV and shrink-resistant EPDM and is claimed to provide installers with a cost-effective option for use with all types of clay and concrete tiles, slates and metal roofing systems.

52.indd 1

Used with Wakaflex leadfree flashing, Klober says that the Uni-Outlet has

been designed to provide a quick and lasting installation without the need for a specialist roofer to do the work on double lapped tile and similarly complex roofs. The Wakaflex Uni-Outlet forms part of Klober’s HausProfi range of lead-free flashings and flue outlets which the company will exhibit at PHEX+ alongside group company Monier Roofing Components. The exhibition takes place at Alexandra Palace on 18th and 19th May. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

153

What are the differences between domestic and commercial applications? There are important differences in the legal requirements of flue termination points when comparing domestic, light commercial and commercial installations. These relate to the significantly higher boiler outputs required in commercial applications and are outlined in the Clean Air Act, which contains specific measures designed to minimise air pollution from chimneys and flues. Guidance is contained in BS 6644 or IGEM UP10. Domestic installations refer to boilers installed in private residences and have relatively low output requirements. In general terms, a domestic boiler has a range up to and including an output of 70kW net. Guidance is contained in BS 5440. Commercial installations refer to boilers above 70kW. For example if you had a 70kW net boiler this would be deemed to be a domestic appliance but if you had two 40kW boilers connected to the same system, this would then be classified as a commercial installation because the total net output is greater than 70kW. Similarly, the type of property will also give bearing on whether a domestic or commercial installation irrespective of output. In the boiler industry, the description ‘light commercial’ covers the output requirement for buildings that are used for commercial purposes but are not so large that they can only be served by high output boilers from manufacturer’s commercial ranges. Typical light commercial applications include B&Bs, pubs, restaurants, banks, leisure centres, GP surgeries, schools and smaller office buildings. Will an installer need extra training? Although it may be worth installers investing in training in twin flue boiler installation, the good news is that special training is not obligatory. An installer will need just the normal gas safety certification and the ACS CCN1 (Core Gas Safety) and CEN1 (Central Heating Boilers).

Modern appliances are capable of flue runs up to 21m from the boiler

To ensure that they are recognised as competent to carry out boiler installations above 70kW, or to install and commission commercial boilers, installers will need to obtain the necessary core commercial qualifications. This includes ACS (COCN1), which covers safety regulations, flueing and ventilation; however, appropriate conversion courses are also available. Regardless of boiler output, some obvious considerations need to be made when designing flue runs. These include ensuring that the flue is not broken or constricted and is adequately supported at any point in its length so that it can effectively transport products of combustion from the boiler to the building’s exterior. What do the regulations say about access to concealed flues? Rules applying to the inspection of concealed flues are relevant to both domestic and commercial installations. Major changes were outlined in the 2010 Building Regulations to ensure flues can be thoroughly checked to aid the early detection of any areas where flue gases could escape – thereby improving industry safety standards and minimising any risks involving carbon monoxide. In all buildings, inspection hatches are advised to be roughly 300 x 300mm and, wherever possible, should be positioned within 1.5m of any joint in the flue system. Find out more Further information and guidance can be found in Part J of the Building Regulations. Not only are Keston’s twin flue boilers easy to install, use and service, they also come with a two year parts and labour warranty as standard. NO2 filters clean the air in urban homes Complementing its range of HRV Q Plus Eco MVHR units, Titon has launched the Trimbox NO2 Filter to combat the high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) found in exhaust gases from diesel engines. The new filter incorporates balanced flow technology to provide class leading absorption of NO2 and is available in two duty sizes. The product is effective in reducing NO2 to an

acceptable mean annual concentration level of 40µQ/ m3, while improving indoor air quality (IAQ). The manufacturer says that independent tests have demonstrated the Trimbox to absorb 95% of NO2 not only in normal, continuous ventilation mode but also at higher ventilation rates. The new filter is highly effective in reducing pollutants in urban homes (including sulphur dioxide,

hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride and chlorine), improving IAQ and reducing the risk of Toxic Home Syndrome and the ailments associated with air pollution. The filter also performs well against ammonia odours. As with other impregnated grades of activated carbon, it will also adsorb volatile organic compounds and solvents. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Adey

get a l l i w p u s r nne Plus, two ru nal2 o i s s e f o r P n MagnaClea ck chemical pa Adey Professional Heating Solutions has teamed up with PHAM News to offer the chance to win an iPad Air (16GB) and two runners-up prizes of the MagnaClean Professional2 chemical packs. The busy, on-the-go nature of the job means installers are increasingly reliant on mobile devices that help them keep up with the pace of their job. As the milder weather signals the wind down of the heating season, it’s an opportune time for installers to educate homeowners about maintaining their central heating systems over the summer while using job friendly tech to keep on top of their admin.

ADEY’s market-leading Professional2 filter plus MC1+ and MC3+ chemicals make up the packs, ensuring installers are equipped with the very best tools. Used as part of the five step ADEY Best Practice™ approach of clean, flush, protect, maintain and test, the introduction of its premium MC3+ chemical cleaner should be the very first thing an installer does as it helps remove corrosion and magnetite deposits when the system is cleansed. Following a thorough system clean, a MagnaClean filter should be installed. ADEY’s MagnaClean Professional2 removes virtually 100% of the damaging suspended black iron oxide sludge which causes heating systems to break down. To ensure ongoing system protection and maintenance, its quality MC1+ chemical inhibitor should be added as the fourth step. The fifth and final step is water testing, carried out at ADEY’s UKAS accredited lab, to ensure that manufacturer, installer and homeowner are confident in the quality of the system water and the ongoing efficiency of the boiler and system as a whole.

How to enter To be in with a chance of winning, simply answer the question below by entering your answer on the freepost reader enquiry and registration card inside this month’s issue. So, for example, if you think the answer is ‘Bilbo and Dolly’, you should write 101 on the card. The winners will be drawn from all the correct entries received before the closing date of 7 May 2016. Only one entry allowed per person.

WHat’s New Preventing fires in kitchens Sona, part of Sprue Safety Products, has introduced the Sona Stove Guard, a safety device that shuts off cookers before a fire occurs. It works with electric cookers and has a heat sensor that monitors rapid increases in temperature on electric hob surfaces. If the temperature reaches a potential hazardous level, the alarm will sound an alert and, if no action is taken, will automatically send a radio signal to a wired cut-off switch to turn off the electricity supply to the appliance, minimising the risk of a potential serious fire incident. The device also has the ability to recognise smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm signals from other nearby detectors and will cut off the appliance’s electricity supply to further enhance safety levels. An intelligent timer senses if the electric hob has been left on accidentally and will cut the power supply after 30 minutes, through to three hours depending on individual requirements.

Potable water pump Now available from KSB is the Calio-Therm S NC series, a range of maintenance-free glandless pumps designed for pumping drinking water in closed circuits found in single-family or t wo -fa m i ly houses as well as in larger building projects. The new circulators offer a highefficiency permanent magnet motor to achieve top efficiencies. With onetouch operation the flow rate can be adjusted via three speed levels. In the event of a blocked rotor the motor stops automatically, and a fault is indicated. The screwed connections

are available in dimension Rp ½ internal thread (EN 10266) or G 1 ¼ external thread (DIN ISO 228). The maximum flow rate equals 0.7m3/h. The pump’s maximum head is 1m. The drinking water temperature should measure between +5°C and +65 °C. The new pump sets, available in four designs, can be supplied with either a plug or a cable. This enables electrical connection without any tools. Apart from its simple design, the pump set is also available as a variant with integrated non-return valve and shut-off valve. WHat’s New AC just got more eco friendly The Etherea range from Panasonic has been enhanced with the addition to two new product lines. The new Z and TZ domestic air conditioning systems are the first AC products from Panasonic to contain the R32 refrigerant, offering high efficiency and environmentally friendly qualities. The Z range of Etherea has been redesigned to suit the interior of any home or commercial property. The sleek new design is compact, taking up less space on the wall. With this clean, fresh, white design, the Z won’t impact on the look and feel of the interior aesthetic. Products in the Z range include Panasonic’s Eco-

navi sensor and Nanoe G air purifying system. Econavi features an inbuilt human activity sensor and sunlight detection technology to adjust output, therefore providing the best comfort at all times, whilst

still saving energy. Panasonic says this feature makes energy savings of up to 38% possible. The Nanoe air-purifying system utilises nanotechnology fine particles to remove and deactivate 99% of both airborne and adhesive micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses and mould. Ensuring the comfort of end users, the TZ range ranks at a quiet 20dB(A) grade, while the Z range operates at 19dB(A). The TZ models are said to be powerful and efficient, with an energy ranking of A++/ A+, while the Z range has a rating of A+++/A++. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

In a new series of articles, oil heating service engineer Tony shares his experiences in addressing some of the issues that come up during the course of his work in the field.

n a recent call-out I had the pleasure of meeting John, a fellow service engineer I usually see once a quarter. He only seems to call when there’s a troublesome issue and this was no exception. “Thanks for coming out at short notice. I’ve been pulling my hair out over this one,” he explained. “I have had trouble with this boiler since it was installed. It is always losing pressure and it is costing the customer a fortune in expansion vessels every service.” As I am always willing to help a colleague out in a moment of crisis, I surveyed the patient – a four year old oil fired combi, but it hasn’t aged well. It looks more like 20 years old! The joints and couplings and even pump valves are smeared with verdigris and there is the classic brown staining in the base tray. The boiler pressure is at zero and the low pressure switch has activated. The expansion vessel weighs a ton and has obviously ruptured. It is tempting to suck air between my teeth and shake my head. I have seen this so many times before. This boiler is suffering from an acute case of expansionicitis – or lack of expansion provision to you and me.

Oil tank has small footprint Slimline and compact, the new ESSL2000 oil tank from Kingspan Titan occupies a total footprint of only 2m2. The new tank was developed following consultation with key industry partners including installers,

oil distributors and heating oil consumers. “The ESSL2000 has one of the highest storage to footprint ratio of any oil tank on the market, so customers with limited space can now significantly increase the amount of oil they can store on site,” says Adrian Gatford, Sales Director.
“What’s more, its slimline profile makes installation quick and simple, enabling contractors to manoeuvre and fit the tank into narrow spaces.” Titan EcoSafe tanks are integrally bunded oil storage systems that have been designed to satisfy the needs of commercial facilities that require secure fuel storage. They feature robust construction and durability, which helps safeguard oil supplies and prevents oil spills or ground contamination. There is also a lockable lid for extra security. www.kingspantitan.com

Now you don’t need a degree in thermodynamics to realise that when you heat water in a container it’s going to expand. If you seal the container then the water is not only going to expand but the pressure is also going to rise. This is a normal occurrence in a sealed heating system. Generally, if you install a packaged boiler, the manufacturer will fit an expansion vessel to take up the increase in water volume as the system water heats up. They also fit a pressure relief valve to protect the boiler and system if the pressure rises too much but, like all things in life, it’s never that simple. As the manufacturer doesn’t know how big the system is that you intend to install the boiler on, they usually supply an expansion vessel with enough volume to protect the boiler, plus some extra capacity. But if you are fitting the boiler on a ten rad job for instance, then you will have to consider adding extra expansion to the system overall. “So,” I hear you say, “if you don’t fit enough expansion in the first place, then surely the pressure relief valve will lift and indicate this?”

Expansion plans Well, the PRV is fitted to protect the installation if something catastrophic goes wrong and, if the expansion is severe enough when the boiler is running, then the PRV will start to drip to give you an

idea that all is not well. But the PRV is not designed to protect against the constant tensile stress being experienced by the boiler shell and its fittings, as the circuit water constantly expands and contracts during normal boiler operation. That, after all, is the job of the expansion vessel. If not enough expansion is provided for, then over a period of time the inevitable will happen and joints and couplings will start to leak leading to loss of pressure and one unhappy customer. At best, the fitted expansion vessel diaphragm will rupture, but I have known in extreme cases where the boiler shell has just given up and has needed to be replaced.

Time saving So what to do? Taking care to access how much expansion is required will save you time and a lot of agro in the future, and you don’t have to be a mathematician to work it out either. For those of you that are so inclined you will find the full technical information that you need in BS 7074. For the rest of us, all you need is the total (or a best estimate) water capacity of the circuit and boiler, the PRV setting and the static head pressure and the maximum operating temperature, which is generally taken as the limit stat operating temperature. There is a wealth of information out there and many manufacturers of both the boiler and expansion equipment will provide tables, disk calculators and even apps (for the more technically savvy) so you can make an informed decision. Don’t be afraid to ring the manufacturer for advice before planning your install. Manufacturers would prefer your call to receiving complaints from unhappy customers. Remember, if you do fit extra expansion always refer to the equipment manufacturer’s fitting instructions first.

If you have a boiler problem and need advice, just send me an email at Techtalktony@hotmail.com and I will see what I can do to help.
