Female tradespeople a popular choice Almost one third (30%) of UK homeowners say they would rather hire a female tradesperson, as opposed to a male one, according to new research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). In a survey of 2000 people, the research showed that women in particular favoured hiring females, with 35% saying they would feel more positive about having a female builder or tradesperson to complete a task in their home. Nearly two-thirds of the general public are ‘gender blind’ when choosing, and wouldn’t care whether they were a man or a woman.

A range of reasons were given for preferring female tradespeople, such as believing that females might be more respectful of their home (51%) and wishing to support more women working in non-traditional

job roles (46%). Despite feeling more positive about hiring a female, 30% fewer people would encourage their daughter to pursue a career in construction compared to encouraging their sons. Commenting on the re-

search, FMB Chief Executive Brian Berry says: “There’s a clear appetite among consumers for more women to enter the building industry. “However, there’s a serious gap in the market, as currently only 2% of tradespeople are women. We’re calling on all parents, teachers and careers advisers to talk to young women about a career in construction. The sector can appeal to anyone who takes pleasure in the built environment and wants to avoid being trapped behind a desk. This should apply to both men and women equally.”

Contractor group for ventilation

Membership applications are now being accepted for a new trade body group which aims to improve ventilation and air quality in UK homes. The Property Care Association (PCA) has created the Residential Ventilation Group (RVG) to provide an increased focus on addressing the issue of excess atmospheric moisture in buildings which do not have effective ventilation. According to the PCA, residential ventilation is critically important to tackle

problems emerging in a new generation of humid homes, which the trade body’s members are increasingly encountering. To secure the Ventilation Contractor membership, applicants go through a similar rigorous application process as for other sectors of PCA to demonstrate technical competence and service delivery. For more details, see: www. property-care.org/membership/ ventilation-c o n t r a c t o rapplication-pack

APHC promotion Also, as part of its sponsorship with the Kawasaki British Superbike Team, JG Speedfit will be giving away VIP tickets for the BSB Championship 2018. The winner of the £20,000 cash will be announced in the first week of October. For more information on the competition, please visit www.speedfit-giveaway. co.uk

New research has revealed the innovations that consumers would most like to see in the ‘bathroom of the future’. Topping the list, with 18% of those surveyed, was automatic facial recognition, which would set the user’s preferred lighting or water temperature variables when entering the room. A further 16% of people said they would love to see an in-shower voice device that allows them to add shampoo, toothpaste and other essentials to their shopping list. Other items consumers want include a full body air dryer; auto height adjustable toilet, sink and mirror; and a pep talking mirror. When questioned on their current bathroom tech, 68% stated that they believe their bathroom is ‘outdated’ – with 42% of them stating it is ‘very outdated’. Just 14% thought their space was of a modern standard, and only 6% believed it to be very modern.

The Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors has launched a new consumer facing leaflet to explain the benefits of instructing an APHC member company. The leaflet explains about APHC members, how they are vetted, the rules which they must adhere to, the quality standards that their work must meet and the reassurance that consumers can gain through being able to contact APHC directly.

APHC members can order a free allocation of leaflets every year. CEO John Thompson says: “The new leaflet has been created to help our members communicate what the APHC Licensed Member logo means, why it is used as an independent stamp of professional approval and the extra reassurance that consumers gain when instructing an APHC member company.”

NEWS Review Milan trade show succeeds in pulling in the crowds Confirming its status as a ‘must visit’ event for anyone who wants to keep up with developments in the European HVAC market, the latest Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) exhibition, staged in Milan every two years, attracted more than 162,000 trade visitors over four days in mid-March. Despite the notable absence of two of the biggest Italian brands – Ferroli and Riello – the show was home to more than 2400 exhibitors, spread over the 20 halls of the impressive Fiera Milano exhibition area. Show organisers Reed Exhibitions has reported that this year’s event saw a 6% increase in visitors from overseas, as well as a 4% growth in attendees from the home country.

For ease of navigation around the halls, the exhibition was organised around four key themes – heating, cooling, water and energy – and, for the first time, also played host to Biomass Innovation Expo, an area dedicated to the latest developments in domestic biomass, a fast growing sector within the Italian heating market.

Big brands A number of familiar names to UK visitors were represented at the show, including water treatment specialists Fernox, Adey and Sentinel, pipework companies John Guest and Polypipe, and most of the major European heating brands, including Ariston, Baxi and Viessmann. The big names in air conditioning and heat pumps were equally well represented – Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic, Samsung and Johnson Controls – as

well as the major players in heating controls, such as Danfoss, Honeywell and Nest. Unsurprisingly, the latest energy saving solutions and advances in interconnectivity were key themes of this year’s show, with manufacturers keen to showcase products that can both enhance user comfort and reduce their energy usage. “Digitalisation was the common thread running though MCE 2018,” says Massimiliano Pierini, MD of Reed Exhibitions Italia. “Installation systems can now be connected via mobile apps, cloud systems and IT, providing an opportunity to develop a new way of building to meet the needs of a new style of living.” UK visitors who want to book a trip to the next show may want to make a note in the diary – the turnstyles will be open again on 17th March 2020.

CIPHE President’s address CIPHE President Geoff Westall took the opportunity to address some of the key issues in the industry at the annual President’s dinner, recently held at the Founders Hall in London. Some 50 guests, including prominent figures from other industry organisations, heard Geoff reflect on his year of office and some of the Institute’s achievements, including the growth of Industrial Associate membership and new initiatives, such as the techtalk and smartalk online training programmes. On the subject of education,

Geoff also called for a rise in standards and greater engagement between the Government and industry. “There is no doubt that the aspirations to create a world-class education system

would be enhanced if the Level 3 NVQ was adopted as a minimum standard for entry into the plumbing and heating industry,” said Geoff, who will continue to serve as President until June this year.

12 YOUR Views

Support within the community How I do so agree with the sentiments expressed by Brian G. Penny of Wales and Jon Graham, CEO of JTL (March Letters page). For many years now I have been expressing my views about apprenticeships in the modern world. I went to a grammar school in London in the ’50s but was not happy about ‘cramming’ to gain an entry to a university. I was more of a practical person and although my father was a solicitor and my mother had been born and brought up on the fringes of London upper class society they supported me in my intention to gain an apprenticeship and I never regretted one moment. Both Mr. Penny and Mr. Graham are right when they say that to encourage both young men and women into our profession, for it is a profession, approaches have to be made to parents and teachers to explain to them how much theoretical work is required to turn them into a practical plumber, heating engineer or electrician. And this approach must be made whilst the students are still at school, not when they are turned out into the unforgiving and dangerous world of reality.

£10 Le 0 tter

I understand that JTL do have apprentice ambassadors around the country encouraging youngsters to consider a career in heating and plumbing. Again it is a career, not just a stopgap until a proper job comes along. When the student apprentices realise all the positive points, including being paid whilst learning from an experienced operative or employer and gaining positive, valuable qualifications which mean something in this day and age, then the right quality young men and women will appear. You don’t have to have university qualifications to be a responsible member of society. You need the support of a caring family and the ability to build self-discipline in this modern world which seems to be going in the direction of ‘every man for himself’. I have now retired, but I do worry about the future of some of our young people and I hope that those who are now in a position of authority and influence will do their utmost to keep our worthwhile profession alive. Clive King Via email

Too many do-gooders

As a one man band for 37 years, I have seen a huge upsurge of ‘do good organisations’. Before going self-employed, I was employed by a small company and I was asked to take on an apprentice. One day I was fitting new central heating in a farm house and while fitting a water cylinder a SNIPEF Inspector came to check on the apprentice. He asked where the apprentice was and I informed him that he was in the cylinder cupboard soldering. The inspector told me how impressed he was that an apprentice was using a blow lamp, but how else are these young people going to learn? They need hands-on experience! Do Good Organisations are always plotting devious ways of putting their hands in our pockets. Lately we have had Gas Safe trying to introduce another layer of qualifications – which was thrown out by the trade – and now we have OFTEC introducing a notification scheme into Scotland – for a small fee, of course! Unfortunately, most Building Control departments do not want to know. So who are they going to notify? R.S. Watt Aberdeen

Minimising legionella risks I am writing in response to the article written by the CEO of CIPHE on raising the standards in the plumbing and heating industry in the March edition of PHAM News. The valid point was made around treating water safety as seriously as gas safety. One of the points was around the installation and maintenance of the heating and water systems. However, there are the day-to-day issues around the overall general cleaning of the water components at the end of the water and heating chain that can be simply addressed. We must look at the water system as a whole and not in simple isolation. The major culprits are where water collects and can stagnate, such as showerheads and bath overflows. When you have young family members, especially children using showers, you want to make sure they are safe at all times from something that is easily and efficiently addressed. Over the last 20 years, recognizing the risk of legionella staphylococcus, Wisemans has developed the Evershower spray as an effective product. It is regarded as the industry leader for safe disinfection, descaling and cleaning of sanitaryware and showerheads. Suitable for domestic use, Evershower is biodegradable and works instantly in a simple spray like any other domestic cleaning product that sits in the household cupboard. So for plumbers, this is something they can use when installing showers or sanitaryware. Once used, why not leave a bottle of Evershower spray and help educate customers? Another area of concern, that is part of a much greater debate, is that of the responsibilities of letting agents and landlords towards their tenants and the practical and proportionate application

of Health & Safety laws. Whilst there is a duty to assess the risk from exposure to legionella to ensure the safety of their tenants, this does not require an in-depth, detailed assessment. There does exist legislation under HSE requirements, but many are ignoring this and hence CIPHE’s point about creating a health check. Letting agents and landlords are putting tenants at risk if not looking at the water system as a whole, especially if properties have been left vacant for a while with stagnant water throughout the system and the outlets. It is part of their remit to ensure that plumbing experts come in and perform their checks as well as cleaning all parts where any stagnant water will have been. Where showers are installed, these have the means of creating and dispersing water droplets which may be inhaled, causing a foreseeable risk of exposure to legionella. If used regularly, the risks are reduced, but, in any case, tenants should be advised by their plumbers to regularly clean and disinfect showerheads. HSE and Local Authority inspectors do not proactively inspect domestic premises or ask for evidence that landlords have undertaken a risk assessment. However, if a tenant were to contract Legionnaires’ disease from the water system in their home, the landlord may be liable to prosecution under HSWA, and would have to demonstrate to a court that they had fulfilled their legal duty. So it is important that they assess and control the risks by ensuring they are working with their plumbing experts to ensure the whole water system has been checked and cleaned. Harvey Wiseman CEO and MD Wiseman Industries Ltd.

14 MERCHANT & Distributor News Spares service is around the clock

Heating engineers can now order the boiler spares they need any time of the day or night following the launch of a new 24 hour order line from Plumbase. While the line will be manned around the clock, Plumbase is also looking to enhance the support it can give installers during core hours by offering expert spares advice between 7.00am and 8.30pm, Monday to Friday. During this period, heating engineers can speak to one of a team of nine fully-

trained spares experts. Heating engineers placing orders before 18:30 will be given the option of having spares delivered either to a local branch or a specified home address. Those ordering after that time can arrange for branch collection on the next working day or can have their products despatched on the next working day for overnight delivery. To use the 24 hour spares order line from Plumbase, simply call 0330 053 6223.

Branching out An established plumbing and heating outlet across northern counties for the past 50 years, James Hargreaves Plumbing Depot first made moves outside its traditional heartland in 2015 when it opened a branch in Milton Keynes. Success there has since led to a significant presence in both Daventry and Northampton, and now the company is spreading into other regions, notably Staffordshire, with new branches in Cannock and Lichfield. As part of its expansion plans, the company has welcomed Bedfordshire-based Russell Coughtrey (pictured) to its management team. Russell, 49, joins as Area Manager (South) with a brief of extending the company’s activities in this part of the UK. “The aim is to keep adding branches to the portfolio and that is what makes this new challenge so exciting for me,” says Russell, who started his career on the trade counter of his local store in Tonbridge. He later moved into sales before becoming a Branch Manager (Lewisham) and went on to achieve a national management post, overseeing 50 branches. “The company’s commitment to service is the key,” he adds. “There is a solid, honest approach to everything they do, and that is reflected across the staff and the customers.”

Flame spreads to north of the border Trade supplies merchant Flame Heating Group is expanding into Scotland with the opening of outlets in Glasgow, Ayr and Edinburgh. The move will lead to the creation of at least 10 jobs across the three locations, with scope for further expansion for the North East of England-headquartered business. Stuart McTurk (pictured above, left) will lead the 4285ft2 branch in Glasgow with the support of Darren Kipling, Commercial Manager, while Kenny Ireland will direct the

3000ft2 trade counter in Ayr. Stuart, 30, from Kilmarnock, possesses more than 13 years experience in the industry, having started his career at a national merchant, working his way up to Branch Supervisor before his appointment as Spares Manager at another merchant. Established in 2011, Flame currently operates 10 branches and specialises in heating spares for commercial and domestic applications, renewable energy solutions, and bathrooms.

ENERGY Matters 15 Upgrade to meet MEES

Renewable LPG Claiming a UK first, Calor has launched BioLPG, a fuel supply made from renewable materials. The Government is urging off-mains gas customers to consider the environmental impact of their fuel choice, so Calor says now is a good time for rural installers to advise their customers on greener alternatives to oil and solid fuel, such as BioLPG. The fuel is chemically identical to standard LPG, but is created from a mix of renewable and waste materials. It’s compatible with current LPG heating systems

Modern electric heating appliances could be the key to raising the efficiency of private rental properties, according to Glen Dimplex Heating & Ventilation. Now that the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) is in force in England and Wales, private landlords must raise their properties’ EPC ratings to ‘E’ before they can grant a new tenancy to new or existing tenants. There are 4.85million private rented properties in England alone, according to the English Housing Survey, but 6.6% have a below-threshold EPC rating of ‘F’ or ‘G’. That means some 320,000 properties will need to increase their rating by at least one band. Dimplex says upgrading to modern heating appliances is an efficient way to achieve this rating bump. Chris Stammers, Head of Insight, says: “Modern electric heating appliances like the Dimplex Quantum system are intelligent, efficient and easy to use. With MEES forcing efficiency improvements upon landlords, they could be just the solution. The key will be in finding solutions that don’t just raise the EPC rating, but do so in a cost-effective way that will appeal to tenants and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.”

Matt Masters, Innovation Manager at Calor, says: “BioLPG is one way we’re helping homeowners achieve a better environmental performance. Installers play a vital role in providing information to homeowners on new fuels such as BioLPG, so that’s why we offer a range of tools, services and incentives to make it beneficial to work with and recommend Calor.” To find out more about BioLPG, visit www.calor.co.uk/ home-energy/biolpg

Help with ground source questions A new suite of online resources to help customers identify the best configuration of ground source technology, and analyse the associated costs and savings, has been launched by Kensa Heat Pumps. They showcase a number of typical costed examples and schematics for ground source system architectures that can be applied across a variety of domestic and commercial scenarios. Customers can review estimated costings for the supply and installation of a Kensa heat pump and ground array equipment, alongside projected running and servicing costs. The examples also show how costs can be offset by the generous income available through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. In addition, customers can refer to the online guide, ‘Which RHI is right for me?’ to help clarify

whether a project set up can qualify for seven years of domestic, or 20 years of non-domestic RHI funding. Kensa will keep this page updated to reflect proposed future legislation changes. Paul Dennison, Sales Manager for Kensa, says: “This body of work is our response to requests from the market. Kensa understands that when a customer is considering ground source heat pumps, they want to see a breakdown of the associated costs and understand what the return on investment would be. Ground source heat pumps aren’t a ‘one size fits all’ technology. We are keen to share our solutionfocused approach with customers to open their eyes to the possibilities of our technology.” Find these resources on www.kensaheatpumps. com and click on the ‘Solutions Centre’ tab at the top of the homepage. 20 COMPANY Spotlight

Setting out a strategy for growth Navien may currently be a relatively small player in the UK heating market, but the South Korean manufacturer is confident that it will achieve significant growth in the coming years. PHAM News recently spoke with Business Development Manager David Bell to find out more.

W

ith the likes of Worcester Bosch and Vaillant dedicating sizeable marketing budgets aimed at becoming familiar household brands, some might think that the odds are against a relatively new player being able to gain a sizeable share of the UK heating market. Navien may have some way to go before it can realise its ambition of becoming one of the UK’s David Bell leading brands, but the South Korean manufacturer can already lay claim to being a dominant force in the North American, Russian and South Korean markets and has now firmly set its sights on achieving similar success in the UK and other parts of Europe. Business Development Manager David Bell has been given the task of helping to put the foundations in place that will enable Navien to enjoy strong and steady growth over the next 10 years. He is the first to acknowledge, though, that it is unrealistic to believe that any new brand can take the market by storm and, when it comes to winning over the loyalty of UK installers, there is no substitute to building trust, establishing good relationships and using traditional market channels. “The UK is the second biggest gas boiler market in the world and I think the most important thing to recognise is that you can’t expect to come in and change the way things operate. You have to do things in a certain way. For example, the merchants have a very important role to play and that’s why it’s the route we will always follow.” The company’s partnership with Plumbase will play a major part in Navien’s bid to raise awareness amongst installers. Its gas boilers are currently available in 38 key branches. With the exception of Bristol, most of those branches are based in the north of England and Scotland, in areas of the country where it is believed that installers will be most receptive. Navien boilers are also available from Jackson Buildbase in 10 branches in Lincolnshire, and through HPS in the South-East. “It’s largely about maximising our current resources,” explains David. “There is no point in us currently trying to cover the whole of the UK, so we will only be in areas where we can provide the branches with the support they need. We’ve had amazing backing from Plumbase and

they’re happy to give us every one of their branches, but we will not commit stock in areas where we can’t back it up with high quality Regional Sales Managers, as this would create negativity.” David says that Navien’s RSMs will now be really focused on working with the branches to promote the features and benefits of the company’s range with the aim of persuading their installer customers to consider switching to a Navien.

Sales pitch So what has the company got to offer? The main pitch to installers is that they can benefit from a high-end, quality boiler with a no-quibble, long-term warranty at a very competitive price. With an ErP efficiency higher than 93%, Navien boilers comply with the requirements of Boiler Plus. The NCB combi (24 to 40kW) and system boiler (20 to 33kW) feature a corrosion resistant, dual stainless steel heat exchanger, low NOx emissions and compatibility with a dedicated range of smart controls or OpenTherm protocol. Both boilers can be converted to LPG straight from the box and come with extended flue lengths of up to 110m. “We offer top end quality for a mid-range price,” says David. “We’re very confident in the product and that’s why we’re prepared to offer a six year warranty as standard, at no extra cost. There are a lot of long warranties out there, but very often they’re not worth the paper they’re written on. If there is ever a problem with one of our products, then I can promise we’ll put it right.” Navien also promises full support for those installers who may be wary of fitting a boiler they’re unfamiliar with. If requested, the company will help commission

the installation for any ‘first-timers’, and its countrywide service agents are able to offer a same day or next day response. The Navien team – Technical Service Manager Alex Ponting, with RSMs Barrie Wilson in the North and Kenny Bayne in Scotland – all put in the miles, travelling the country in the company’s own mobile training unit, the ‘Navi Van’, attending breakfast mornings, trade events and visiting sites where installers are able to familiarise themselves with the workings of the boiler. Installers will also soon be able to see more operational models on display at stockist trade counters, and there are plans to have Navien boilers installed at three geographically spread training centres before the end of the year.

Extended range An expanded product range is coming shortly, which will include low NOx WiFi smart condensing water heaters and also a range of low NOx WiFi smart Blue Flame oil condensing boilers, set to be launched in the early part of next year. “The idea is that we will launch brand Navien – with a full portfolio of products as opposed to just gas boilers,” says David. “I think that gives us a different emphasis in the marketplace and allows us to operate in areas where there is no natural gas.” David acknowledges that there are challenging times ahead but is confident that the company can achieve its objectives. “It’s not going to be an easy road,” he says. “The more successful we are, the more guns will be pointed at us, but these are exciting times for Navien and I’m happy to be a part of it.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No. www.navien.co.uk 105

Getting to know you Each month, PHAM News shines the spotlight on installers around the country to get a picture of what life is like for them at work and at play.

NAME: Joe Waller COMPANY: Heatco FROM: St. Albans

At work... At play... How often do you work weekends? “Although I do try to fit everything in during the week and avoid booking up my weekends, I can be available on Saturdays if it can’t be helped. My wife works on Saturdays too, so she understands if I need to pop out for an hour or so to carry out a quick service.” How often do you attend a training course? “I aim to go to training courses a couple of times a month. I’ve been in the industry for a little while now, and I find that some of the product courses aren’t as useful if I’m already familiar with the ins and outs of the appliance, so I prefer the courses which are more in depth.” Have you ever visited a trade exhibition – if so, was it worthwhile? “I’ve been to a couple of shows in the past. It’s not too far for me to get into London so the ones held at ExCeL London, like Ecobuild, are always on my list, but I’m generally happy to travel. Although it’s a day where I’m not working, I think it’s really important to take the time to attend trade shows, as they’re a good opportunity to meet people and get to know the different manufacturers.” Do you use social media to promote your business? “I’ve tried to in the past, but I can’t get on with it. I originally set up a Facebook page as a way of sharing different photos, and I’ve looked at Twitter too. I’ve never really had any jobs come from either, so as much as I want it to work, I don’t know if it’s for me!” What tool couldn’t you live without? “Probably my Hilti hand drill – I decided to indulge myself and bought it not too long ago, but it’s definitely my favourite!” Would you consider taking on an apprentice? “It’s certainly something that I’m considering at the moment, but the trouble I’m having is finding the right person. I’ve had a few calls from a local college before, and have received the odd CV, but when I’ve called the good ones back they’ve usually already found work. There doesn’t seem to be a database of young people who would be interested either, so I think a website where they could register their interest and show off their skills would be really helpful.”

24.indd 1

How much tea/coffee do you drink in a typical day? “I’m terrible when it comes to tea – I must drink at least 10 cups a day! I’ll have had at least three before I leave the house in the morning, and then when you’re out servicing, everyone will offer you at least one. I usually say yes up until about 3pm, and then when I get home at around 6pm it’s time for a well-deserved wine!” What’s the best thing on TV right now? “I don’t really watch too much TV, as by the time the kids have gone to bed we might only have an hour or so to watch one of the BBC dramas or something on Netflix. I really enjoyed McMaffia when that was on, and now we’re watching a show called Collateral which has just started and has John Simm and Carey Mulligan in it.” What’s your favourite sport to watch? “It’s got to be football. I’m a Tottenham season ticket holder so I try and make it to all of their home games. I grew up in Wood Green, which is next to Tottenham, so they’ve always been my team growing up.” How often do you check your mobile? “About every 30 seconds! At the moment, I have a package which includes my phone and an iPad. I don’t use the tablet very often, so in a couple of weeks I’ll be upgrading and getting an Apple Watch instead. When I’m out on a job, I always find that as soon as I get off a call and begin climbing up ladders into the loft, I’ll start getting text messages, so it will be handy to be able to see them a little easier.” What do you listen to when driving? “I don’t listen to music all that often but if I have the radio on, I tend to switch between BBC Radio London, which is quite lighthearted and talk-based, and BBC Radio 4 because they usually have some good discussions on during the afternoon. They’ve also got a few quite interesting podcasts, so in the past I’ve downloaded some of those to listen to.” Do you do much DIY at home? “With three young kids, there’s always something that needs doing, so when it gets to a certain point, or if I’m being nagged, I’ll find some time to take a look at it.”

Tendering for work in the public sector Continuing his series of articles on how to grow a heating and plumbing business, Martin Jones, MD of TradeHelp, offers some advice on how to tender for public sector contracts.

Publication of notices In the vast majority of cases, notices must be published for any public tender exceeding the £181,302 threshold. The public authority or housing association must send the contract advertisement notice to the EU Publications Office. This notice gives the time limit within which a company must ‘express an interest’ in tendering for the contract and also the details of where the expression of interest should be sent. This can generally be done by sending an e-mail with your details attached. There are some free-of-charge governmentsponsored sites which can notify you via e-mail of relevant tender opportunities published against your desired criteria. These are generally easy to register with and set up.

All or some of the companies submitting tenders may be asked to meet the public authority and present to them on how they will deliver the works. This gives the public authority the opportunity to ask any relevant questions they may have. This process may also form part of the evaluation scoring.

Award criteria Public sector authorities may use different criteria when evaluating tenders, such as the lowest price offered and best response to the technical specification requirements. Each applicant should be informed of the different weighting given to the various sections of the criteria (i.e. price, technical characteristics and environmental aspects).

Sanitary system behind the wall Adding a concealed cistern with wall-hung WC can help bring hotel-style luxury to a small bathroom. Here, Andy Cairns, Sanitary Category Manager at Marley Plumbing & Drainage, provides a guide to installing a Multikwik concealed sanitary system.

A

well-designed bathroom can increase the value of a property; therefore, taking the time to assess and redesign the space has never been more important in bringing about customer satisfaction. However, the square footage of a bathroom is often restricted, so it is important to learn how to maximise this space. Good design, organisation and sticking to straight lines and unfussy interiors can make a small

room look larger. But when space is very limited, it is recommended that wall-hung sanitaryware and concealed cisterns are chosen, as they offer the smoothest design lines, and cleaning is much easier because there are no exposed pipework and fittings to work around. To show how easy it can be to fit Multikwik’s concealed sanitary system, we present a step by step tutorial that takes you from start to finish.

Measure 1m from the measuring device on the frame to the finished floor level, then raise the frame to the appropriate height and lock frame legs in place by tightening the fixing bolts. Double-check the finished height of the frame.

5

Cut the threaded rod to suit and secure the bracket to the frame with the fixing brackets. Mark and drill the wall mounts.

6

3

Once all of the components have been unpacked from the box, position the frame in the approximate location. Remember that you can loosen the leg bolts to enable the frame to be adjusted.

Loosely fit the wall-mounting bracket to the frame. Measure and mark the rod to ensure you have adequate thread for the front and back fixing bolts.

Measure the pan support fixing centres and the depth of the pan’s fixing points, allowing sufficient fixing rod projection.

With both wall brackets secure, install the supplied pipework and soil connection.

30 TRAINING Update CIPHE recognition for Geberit facility The Geberit training facility, based at the company’s purpose built headquarters in Warwick, has received accreditation from the CIPHE. The new academy opened last year and offers installers the opportunity to benefit from hands-on experience on the company’s piping systems and sanitary solutions. It also includes a two-storey hydraulic tower, demonstrating good and bad plumbing practice. Kevin Wellman, CIPHE CEO, says: “CIPHE places great importance on quality training. Geberit has invested heavily in its training facilities and the organisation is clearly passionate about training and supporting installers.”

Find the best course for you With the aim of making it easier for installers to search for local training centres, TradeHelp has introduced a new function on its app (available for free on both Android and iOS). The new app function has been designed to promote courses held at ACS and OFTEC accredited training centres and colleges, including links to websites and contact details. App users can also access savings from many centres, which provide discounts to TradeHelp members. Martin Jones, MD at TradeHelp, comments: “We are continually looking

at ways to improve our service to central heating installers. This partnership with training centres and colleges helps to quickly and easily raise awareness of the various courses and discounts available to the installer.” Through the app, which includes a handy tool for the creation of professionally presented customer quotations, members can also access 0% interest free finance options for their customers For more information about TradeHelp visit: www.tradehelp.co.uk

Access to fault finding videos The fault finding, testing and multimeters app from Mr Combi Training, available on Android and iOS, can now be accessed on Apple TV at no extra cost. The app contains all 21 chapters, totalling 77 minutes, explaining how to carry out the electrical

safety tests in full, how to test stats, fans, sensors and pumps. There’s also lots of help and advice about expansion vessels, water hammer, airing cupboards and more. The videos are suitable for new entrants, as well

as those moving from installation to repairs, and existing breakdown engineers. The format is designed to help users learn at their own pace. The app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play for £19.99.

LPG storage qualifications A new training course from Logic4training offers experienced gas operatives the opportunity to tap into the off-grid market by becoming qualified in the installation and commissioning of bulk LPG storage vessels. The LPG Vessels Package course also equips candidates with the skills to carry out electro-fusion jointing of PE pipework up to a maximum diameter of 63mm. Suitable candidates must have experience working as a registered gas engineer and hold valid CCN1 and COCN1 qualifications.

Mark Krull, Director at Logic4training, comments: “LPG is an area often overlooked by registered gas engineers looking to widen their services. However, with an estimated 4 million UK households off the mains

gas grid, training up could be a wise business move. Qualifying in the installation of LPG vessels and associated works enables installers to reach a new target market.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

ENERGY EFFICIENT Products 33

No need to settle for just the one measure Following the introduction of Boiler Plus and the launch of the new Bosch EasyControl, Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, explains why installers shouldn’t be aiming for the minimum requirement of one energy efficiency measure when they could be hitting three of the four at once.

S

tarting this month, the new Boiler Plus policy will require the replacement of any gas-fired combi boiler in England to meet a minimum efficiency standard of 92% ErP. Additionally, the legislation now states that the boiler must be paired with time and temperature controls – helping to combat the fact that less than half of UK homes are said to have this minimum level at present. Martyn Bridges, Worcester As well as these new standards, the other key point for installers to keep in mind is that they will now have to include one of four additional efficiency improving measures as part of the system. However, as the customer’s needs and specifications will differ with each installation, the policy has been made somewhat flexible – with installers provided with a prescribed list to choose the most suitable solution from.

More the better While the new legislation requires the need for at least one of these additional measures, some of the prescribed measures will work together and complement each other. While installers could look to fit multiple efficiency measures to further boost the performance of a boiler, there are easier ways of incorporating two or three of the listed measures into a heating system in one go. When it comes to non-internet connected controls, these generally tend to be either a weather sensor or a load compensator – meeting only one of the requirements set out in Boiler Plus. However, if we take a look at smart controls, many of them – particularly ones developed by boiler manufacturers – feature automation and optimisation as well as weather and load compensation. When installing smart controls, such as the new Bosch EasyControl, which includes load and weather compensation, installers are able to meet three of the items on the Boiler Plus checklist and offer homeowners the best return on their investment.

Greater control Additionally, for customers keen to improve the efficiency of their heating system even further, the new smart control can be paired with devices such as Electronic Thermostatic Radiator Valves (eTRVs). This allows installers to create up to 20 different heating zones within a property and offer customers even more control over their heating system. As it’s expected that most homeowners will be looking at purchasing a new heating control when replacing their boiler, this presents installers with the perfect opportunity to inform them of the benefits of investing in one smart heating control rather than multiple different energy saving measures. While Boiler Plus goes a long way in improving the efficiency of gas fired heating systems, it’s also important to remember that there are additional measures outside of these requirements that can also help improve the performance of a boiler.

33.indd 1

Bosch EasyControl includes load and weather compensation

Installers have a number of opportunities to add real value

Power flushing or gravity flushing a system is vital to keeping the boiler running as efficiently as possible. When fitting a replacement boiler, as well as checking the water quality for any signs of corrosion, an installer should always carry out a full system cleanse, which will also prolong the life of both the boiler and any ‘water facing’ components. Once the pipework has been flushed, it’s recommended that a magnetic or cyclonic cleansing filter, such as our Greenstar System Filter, is added to keep the system running at its best. This will complement the process by assuring the long term protection of an appliance by collecting any contaminates that may not have been removed during flushing. Additionally, it’s important that installers remind homeowners that an annual service should be considered a vital part of the whole-house approach to warmth and

efficiency. While this is not currently a legal requirement, the long term benefits of carrying out this process should not be underestimated. Many manufacturers now even stipulate that an appliance must have a yearly service in order for any warranty to remain valid.

Added value Overall, the changes brought about by Boiler Plus mean that installers are presented with a number of opportunities to add real value in their consultation with the homeowner. While some of the possible options will see a nominal up-front cost rewarded with long term energy savings, it’s important for installers to remind homeowners of the other efficiency improving measures that should be carried out during any installation to help improve the overall performance of a heating system. www.worcester-bosch.co.uk

Preventing frozen condensate pipes Worcester Bosch’s Martyn Bridges believes a degree of complacency concerning external pipework may have been to blame for the high number of difficulties arising from frozen condensate pipes this winter. He argues that unless installation issues are addressed there could be further problems following the implementation of Boiler Plus, which will increase the levels of condensate generated by the boiler and subsequently the condensate pipework. “This could increase the likelihood of freezing during the winter even more,” says Martyn, who is calling on policy-makers to ensure that building regulations

and standards are aligned to prioritise mechanical services. Martyn is particularly concerned about the number of homes still relying on externally run condensate, despite regulations launched in 2014 mandating internal

routing and only allowing externally run pipework as a last resort. Much of this is due to the house design where the waste water system of the entire house is externally run. Therefore, even if the condensate pipe is run internally, you can still experience the stack

pipe freezing up with the same result. “I’m still seeing newbuilds being constructed with external waste water pipework, which is incomprehensible,” he says. “For too long the mechanical services of a property are not being thought through sufficiently at the planning stage to help eliminate these sorts of issues. “Internal pipework allows condensate to drain away, without being subjected to freezing temperatures,” he says. “In Germany, which experiences harsh winters every year, this is the only way you can do it. We will need to follow its example if we are to cope with the UK’s increasingly volatile weather patterns.”

Taking control with the latest technologies Thanks to advances in technology and controls, heating systems have become more energy efficient over the years. Alex Boweren, Product Manager at Ariston, looks at the features and benefits of the latest smart devices, as well as the advantages of zoning.

C

ontrols have developed significantly in recent years, particularly since the Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled people to manage the heating and energy used in their homes remotely, usually through apps on their smartphones or tablets. In fact, according to Ofcom’s report ‘The Communications Market 2017’, most UK adults now own a smartphone – making the IoT a definite possibility for a large number of homeowners. These technological advances mean people can now adjust the heating in their homes without having to physically be in the property. This, in turn, can maximise the length of time a system is switched off, while offering flexibility when it comes to adjusting the heating to come on later or earlier than originally planned.

Now, returning our attention back to the ‘smart’ room thermostats mentioned earlier: while these do enable the heating to be switched on and off or adjusted remotely, they are only capable of controlling the temperature for a single zone – i.e. the temperature maintained is the same for every room in a property. This is where multi-zone heating comes into play.

In the zone

Affordable solutions Although it is extremely useful to have such excellent levels of connectivity, affordability remains a key driver for end users – especially homeowners. This is all the more reason to use the latest smart controls, as not only can they help keep fuel bills to a minimum, but using functions such as energy monitoring can also contribute to a heating system operating more efficiently. For example, the Ariston NET app provides users with energy management tips, which if followed, should coincide with fuel bills reducing over time. Of course, such apps are merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of controlling heat ing

The Ariston Clas Net ONE boiler comes complete with a 12 year warranty and Cube S Net Wi-Fi thermostat (right). Users can gain greater convenience and efficiency when the boiler and control are operated with Ariston’s NET smartphone app (above)

34.indd 1

To deliver the highest efficiencies, boilers can work in concert with a range of technologies, from smart thermostats with automation and optimisation, to load and weather compensation

systems. There are many other devices on the market with the functionality to ensure efficient operation alongside the latest condensing boiler. A modulating room thermostat (such as our own Cube S Net), is one such control, mainly responsible for adjusting boiler outputs to within 0.1°C of a set level, as well as eliminating any ‘peaks and troughs’ in temperature. While we have been highlighting the features and benefits of such controls for a few years, their environmental credentials are now becoming key when it comes to the latest industry standards. For instance, the introduction of Boiler Plus (see also page 26)

sets out new requirements for installers fitting new boilers and heating controls, with the aim of reducing domestic carbon emissions and encouraging energy efficiency. As a result, any boiler must be a minimum 92% efficient under ErP, plus combis must be fitted with either flue gas heat recovery, a weather compensation stat, load compensation or a smart thermostat with automation or optimisation.

Compensation Weather compensation controls are worth considering, either in England as part of Boiler Plus, or elsewhere in the UK as part of an energy efficient heating system. These devices provide a supplementary line of external system data (usually an outdoor sensor), resulting in more accurate temperature adjustments. So, if the outside temperature increases, for example, the boiler will respond accordingly by adjusting the system flow temperature, further reducing energy consumption. Some more advanced controls now benefit from online weather monitoring capabilities, which again contributes to temperature control to prevent a home from overheating or not being heated enough. In terms of load compensation, this is based on the gap between the actual internal temperature and that set on the heating controls. The boiler then modulates accordingly, so only the necessary amount of energy is used to reach the set temperature. So, when a property is cold, the temperature of the water going to the heat emitters will be high but, as rooms warm up, load compensation lowers this temperature the nearer it gets to the set point.

Multi-zone heating allows individual rooms (or ‘zones’) to be heated to a set temperature, at a specific time of day. In order to achieve this, the main heating control is connected to the boiler, acting as a ‘central controller’. Then, additional room sensors are added to the system accordingly, alongside wired or wireless zone management kits, creating separate direct heating zones. A successful zoning strategy enables accurate temperature control for different rooms and/or areas of a property. For instance, the heating in a kitchen could be set lower than a more frequently used room, such as the lounge; or certain areas could be programmed to warm up at different times of the day – e.g. an entrance hallway could be set to warm up in time for when occupants arrive home from work or school. Whatever the individual circumstances, a zoned central heating system allows the temperature in each room to be easily and precisely set for optimum comfort. People can even adjust the temperature in certain rooms to suit their own individual preferences – which is ideal for areas such as bedrooms!

Constant contact However, in order to maximise efficiency across the whole heating system, it pays to use a boiler and controls from the same manufacturer since the products will be able to ‘talk’ to one another, thanks to the latest communication software. This helps with scenarios such as Boiler Plus because, as modern thermostatic controls become wifi enabled, they can remain in constant contact with the boiler and any other apps or heating system components.

Consider the options There are certainly many different options available when it comes to establishing a truly energy efficient heating system. Fortunately, a combination of advances in technology, alongside continued revisions in legislation, is ensuring this issue remains at the forefront of the industry. As a result, installers will be well aware that establishing the correct combination of boiler and controls will go a long way towards creating a long-lasting, reliable and efficient heating system. The case for weather compensation Combi boilers now need to be installed with at least one ‘Boiler Plus’ feature, but when it comes to weather compensation, real-world savings are far greater than some recently-published figures suggest, says Darren McMahon, Marketing Director at Viessmann.

F

rom April 6th this year, installers are required by law to fit new gas combi boilers with at least one of the four energy-saving technical features listed under new Boiler Plus regulations – but there’s a lack of available and reliable information about which of those four options might be best. One option in particular, weather compensation, performs much better in real life than some figures suggest. The four types of Boiler Plus technology identified by the new rules, which are an addition to Part L of the Building Regulations, are flue gas heat recovery, smart thermostats with automation and optimisation, load compensation, and weather compensation. At least one of these four technical features must be fitted when replacing a combi boiler where a heating system already exists, and more than one feature can be fitted if the installing engineer or customer chooses to do so. The new Boiler Plus regulations also state that all gas boilers must be at least 92% efficient under the ErP rating system and must have boiler interlock, time and temperature control.

Impact assessment Although the new rules currently apply only in England, installers and customers everywhere will want to know how the four listed technologies compare with each other for energy savings, and here there’s a problem. In the absence of any published real-life data allowing technologies to be compared, the impact assessment recently published by the Government is based on modelling information such as that used for SAP software – but this can differ greatly from the energy savings seen in real life. The BEIS consultation document says that typical savings of £17 can be made from a smart thermostat in the first year of operation, £15 from flue gas heat recovery, £4 from load compensation, and £4 from weather compensation. This document also states that the most expensive of these measures, flue gas heat recovery, typically costs £460 and takes 14 years to pay back; that smart thermostats cost £190 and take 11 years to pay back; that load compensation costs £50 and takes 13 years to pay back; and that weather compensation costs £130 and takes 35 years to pay back. (The flue gas heat recovery pay back figure of 14 years is once expected economies of scale have reduced the price by more than half; no mention is made of expected cost reductions for other technologies due to these same economies of scale.)

The fitting of a weather compensation device represents a relatively cost-effective way to achieve energy savings

But real-life data and scientific research suggest the savings realisable from weather compensation can be ten to 25 times higher than this – saving the typical end-user a good £40 to £100 or more per year.

University challenge To find out how much energy and money is really saved by weather compensation, after hearing from our customers that it’s cutting anything from 10% to 30% off their energy bills, four years ago Viessmann UK commissioned Salford University to research the real life performance of boilers with this technology. The University conducted this research independently, in its Energy House – the only full-scale building in an environmental chamber in Europe and the only full-scale, brick-built test facility in a controlled environment in the world. What the University’s scientists found is that weather compensation can deliver immediate energy savings in excess of 7% (see table below). This suggests energy bill savings of at least £42 per year for a three-bedroom house and an average payback period of just 3.3 years. And when winters are mild, as they usually are in the UK, the potential for savings is greater still.

• In Test 1 the standard condensing boiler delivered energy savings for warmer external temperatures • In Test 2 weather compensation increased energy savings further, with improvements ranging from 15% at 3°C => to 45% at 12°C

36.indd 1

Salford University’s research showed that when the outside temperature is 3°C, weather compensation delivers energy savings of 15%; when the external temperature is 8°C, weather compensation achieves energy savings of 31.3%; and when it’s 12°C outdoors, the savings are a staggering 45.1%. As a bonus, weather compensation also enhances room temperature consistency, especially when external temperatures are above 3°C, by preventing overheating – a useful benefit now that overheating is becoming an increasingly widespread problem in airtight new-builds.

Heat recovery It’s only logical that weather compensation achieves significant energy savings. For a condensing boiler to attain maximum efficiency by recovering latent heat in the flue gases, it must condense for as long as possible; a system where the flow temperature is governed by an outdoor weather sensor in addition to an indoor thermostat will condense for longer. For a condensing boiler to get the water vapour in the flue gas to condense, the return water temperature needs to be at or below 57°C (dew point). But without weather sensitive controls, and with most boilers operating with a flow temperature of around 80°C, this requirement may not be met. The consequence is a return temperature of around 70°C, which is too high for condensation to occur. To eradicate this inefficiency, an outdoor weather sensor enables the boiler to make constant, small adjustments to the f low temperature, ensuring that the boiler runs only as hot as it needs to, but no hotter. By achieving a f low temperature a few degrees lower, the return temperature is lower and the boiler condenses for longer, operating more efficiently and reducing gas consumption.

The real world So those recently-published, SAP-influenced figures from the Government really aren’t a definitive reference source for Boiler Plus energy savings. We must be careful that academic calculations don’t paint a pessimistic picture which puts end-users off spending money on the Boiler Plus technologies that can really benefit them – and out there in the real world, the benefits of weather compensation are greater home comfort and big energy savings. www.viessmann.co.uk

ENERGY EFFICIENT Products 37 Helping to make Boiler Plus easier

Saving on energy with air and water

Complying with the new Boiler Plus requirements, the uSense smart control from Baxi is compatible with combi boilers and also connects via OpenTherm for additional features, such as boiler fault diagnosis. The uSense has its own downloadable app, so the householder’s heating can be controlled by a smartphone or tablet and customers can also monitor their energy use and costs. For added convenience, the automatic summer/winter time changes the clock to daylight savings time so it doesn’t have to be reset. There is also a presence detection that allows the unit to light up when someone approaches it. For further energy savings, Baxi has also launched a

Saving both energy and water, the Propelair toilet delivers a high performance flush with a combination of just 1.5 litres of water and displaced air. With less energy required for water and waste processing, the company claims that the toilet’s footprint is reduced by an average of 80%. The toilet features a twosection cistern – one for air and one for water. Before flushing, the lid is closed to form a seal and then the simple press of a button causes water to enter the pan followed by air which is pushed via a patented pump to provide a full and reliable flush. Ideal for offices and busy public areas, the Propelair achieves the highest performance rating under BREEAM’s water efficiency guidelines. It also helps to save time within the working

weather compensation device with an outdoor sensor that clips into the flue terminal and connects to the boiler directly. The Multifit IFOS provides more accurate temperature sensing as it’s out of direct sunlight and attracts a free flow of air. An added benefit for installers is that it consists of very few parts, and just a two-wire cable runs back to the boiler down the flue air duct – meaning no drilling or disruption. How UFH delivers on efficiency Whether an electric or hydronic system, underfloor heating should provide an energy saving solution for both homeowners and businesses. Steven Rooney, Sales Director at Gaia Climate Solutions, highlights some of the key features and benefits of both options.

U

nderf loor heating has a number of benefits when it comes to energy efficiency. On average, underfloor heating systems will use between 15-40% less energy than traditional radiators. Unlike radiators, no heat lost in the ceiling. Another advantage in relation to the environment is that UFH systems are well suited to using energy from renewable sources. Because of their lower energy requirement, they can run off a solar panel system, or even heat pumps, further improving energy efficiency levels. The considerable benefits of underfloor heating are now widely understood, but a question still asked by many people, though, is which is better – a wet (hydronic) system or an electric system?

Decision drivers Choosing any heating solution is invariably closely geared to meeting Building Regulations. Until recently, electric underfloor heating (UFH) was widely employed, but today’s SAP calculations tend to weigh against the sole use of electricity for heating in new build residential developments. Ultimately though, as gas and oil reserves dwindle, prices rise and electricity generation becomes less reliant on fossil fuels, it seems likely that electricity may again be seen as the preferred form of heating.

Steven Rooney, Sales Director

Complementary wet and electric UFH systems can be installed in a single building to maximise comfort and savings

Higher levels of insulation and the consequent reduction in the level of heating required can push the balance towards electric systems. With Passivhaus in particular, the need for heating is minimal so why have a radiator or wet underfloor system fed by a gas boiler – which takes up space and needs servicing – when an electric underfloor system can do the same job on the few occasions heating is needed? Similarly, electric systems are frequently the first choice in the retrofit market because of the availability of mat systems that are less than 4mm thick, so can be laid on top of existing floors. Wet systems are not that thin, although wet UFH can be installed within suspended timber floors. Wet UFH is a clear winner where

air or ground source heat pumps or district heating systems are employed, as it requires water temperatures of only 45-50ºC, much lower than radiator systems. While comfort will be exactly the same whichever system is chosen, it is worth remembering that electric mats installed near the surface offer the advantage of a much shorter reaction time than pipes or cables set into a screed. This can be useful in situations where ‘instant’ heat is required.

Cost comparisons Overall, supply and install cost comparisons typically bring both wet and electric systems in at a very similar figure of around £13-15/m2, including the relevant thermostats. This cost parity results from a number of factors.

When making direct comparisons between wet and electric systems, the speed which the pipe or cable is installed is much the same for both. However, while the pipe used with wet systems is relatively cheap, overall installation costs are higher and the cost of a boiler or heat pump must be added. With electric UFH, the installation costs are less but the cable is more expensive. When it comes to running costs, electric systems are marginally more expensive but maintenance is inevitably greater with wet systems, especially if a boiler or heat pump is included in the equation. There are also moving parts in the manifold and annual safety checks are required. Taking these factors into account, the comparative running costs for heating a semi-detached two

bedroom new build house over 20 years are around £17,804 for a wet UFH system running off a gas boiler and £12,623 for electric UFH.

Control options The overriding commonality between wet and electric underfloor heating systems lies in the controls, and considerable R&D in this area has benefited both systems. This has made UFH even more efficient as it allows systems to operate only when needed and to the exact level of heat output that is required. Wireless systems offer further flexibility and can link to building management systems with touch screen control or even control from a mobile phone. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No. www.gaia.co.uk

New combi boiler will help save on energy bills Responding to demand for energy saving heating solutions, Ravenheat has introduced the HE98S combi boiler. Designed in consultation with heating engineers, the new boiler is compliant with Boiler Plus legislation and features a stainless steel heat exchanger and long-lasting copper and brass components. Extra energy savings are achieved as a result of the boiler’s compatibility with OpenTherm technolog y. OpenTherm is said to deliver a substantial saving for end users without any real effort on their part, as it is all done automatically by the boiler and its controls. The boiler’s software is controlled directly from the room thermostat which modulates the gas

38.indd 1

valve and central heating pump, allowing the precise gas input requirement to match varying demand. For example, if the house needs to be 1º warmer, the

control tells the boiler to start and run at a lower power. By reducing the flow temperature to a minimum of the heat required, it is kept below the dew point of 50°C, therefore allowing the boiler to operate in the more efficient condensing mode. Homeowners can choose to use a smart thermostat to maximise operating efficiency. As well as providing the flexibility to control their heating or hot water from a mobile device, smart thermostats can also deliver an extra 4% efficiency.

Case study

Inside the new HE98S combi

A recent installation in a Leeds-based family home has demonstrated how the HE98S can help to reduce energy bills. When George Robinson moved into a

new house near Leeds and found his boiler needed replacing, he asked longtime friend and heating engineer, Michael Goodall, for advice. Michael, who has been working in the industry since the age of 15 and set up his own plumbing and heating business, iPlumb, recommended the HE98S. George says he is very happy with the new boiler, which has already saved £30 off his first month’s bill. “It’s fantastic,” he says. “I spoke to a lot of people who fit a lot of boilers and most of them said if you want the best price and service, get a Ravenheat. “Once we had the boiler fitted we noticed an instant change. It’s warmer and gets up to temperature really quickly, especially with the OpenTherm thermostat. We

need to think about saving money on bills in particular with having a young family, and it has absolutely cut money off our energy bills.” G eorge also had a Honeywell thermostat fitted to allow him and his partner to adjust their heating from a mobile device. This has helped his family stay warm and save even more energy. By setting the heating remotely for the specific times they know they will be home, George and his family have noted they have their heating on for much less time than before, with no detrimental effect on the temperature of their house when they are at home. Michael Goodall has been equally impressed by the boiler. He says: “I chose the HE98S because of its small

ENERGY EFFICIENT Products 39 Take the electric avenue for hot water Making hydronic balancing easier The new Super SX iQ hot water cylinder from OSO Hotwater is said to take electrically heated water to new levels of efficiencies. Said to be one of the first electric cylinders on the market to feature built-in, self-learning controls, the Super SX iQ can predict and programme the immersion based on homeowner usage rather than being connected to a timer. This technology results in savings for the customer using an electric heating system. These cylinders also store water at 70°C, then blended down to 60°C when delivered from the cylinder, meaning a smaller cylinder can be specified. Fast heat up and recovery

times add further benefits. All pipes and cables are plumbed to the rear of the unit to give a neat appearance, and plumbing connections and expansion valves are positioned on the top of the cylinder (as pictured) to create an easily accessible work area. Potable water pipes and safety valves are connected to a factory fitted multifunction valve, which are concealed below an insulated lid to restrict standing heat losses. Manufactured from titanium alloyed stainless steel, the Super SX iQ has a 25-year guarantee and is available in capacities from 120 to 300 litres. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No. www.osohotwater.co.uk 122

New developments, more applications The latest advances in Honeywell’s T6 series thermostat range allows installers to install these smart controls for heating only, heating and hot water, and two zone applications. The T6R Hot Water (T6R-HW) is a wireless thermostat with all the features of the existing T6 range, such as full internet

control via smart phone or tablet, OpenTherm, time

proportional and integral control (TPI), optimum start/ stop and delayed start boiler control, plus additional hot water-specific time control. There is also a new twochannel wireless receiver which supports two heat zones. For two zone applications, the receiver supports the creation of two heating zones using two T6

programmable thermostats wirelessly paired to the one receiver. In addition, the twochannel wireless receiver box and the wireless T6 thermostat are available as a spare to ensure installers can custom build the system they need. PHAM ENQUIRY No. www.honeywelluk.com

One of the key selling points of the ALPHA3 circulator from Grundfos is that it can deliver savings on heating bills as the result of a process that simplifies hydronic balancing. Grundfos says a correctly balanced domestic radiator or underfloor heating system can generate savings ranging from 7% to 20%. The built-in, one-way communication capabilities of the ALPHA3, together with the Alpha Reader and Grundfos GO Balance app, allow for easy and quick hydronic balancing of a domestic 2-pipe radiator system. This means that flow-based balancing of a heating system no longer has to be overly complicated and time-consuming and can be achieved in just a few simple steps.

This solution means that complex data collection and calculations are done automatically, which is a huge improvement on existing market solutions. This means that time and costs are reduced substantially for the installer, as the entire process is completed onsite with all data and calculations there in the palm of their hand. 40 Products in Action UFH unites parts Keeping diners comfortable in London of extended home Under f loor heat ing products from Hep2O have been specified for an extension of a family home. The owners needed a heating solution that connected and integrated the existing part of the property with a newly built 25m2 orangery, while providing an even heat distribution. The UFH was installed into the new orangery using the Hep2O staple system, and into the existing kitchen using the panel system. Hep2O staple systems offer a solution for screeded floors, as well as flexibility of design which was essential for a project of this nature. Furthermore, joist panels sit between the joists and do not effect build height, making it ideal for existing properties. Panel systems were used to cover the 10m2 kitchen area, which led into the orangery, where the staple systems were used to cover 25m2 of the new floor area. In total, 80m coils of pipe were used. www.hep2oufh.co.uk

Gas beats coal in Doncaster Staff and pupils at Dunsville Primary School in Doncaster are benefitting from highly efficient heating and hot water, thanks to four 120kW Thision L EVO gas condens-

ing boilers from ELCO. The new wall-mounted boilers have been installed in-line on a floor-standing cascade system within the school’s basement plant room.

The new boilers replaced two coal-fired units, which have been in operation for decades. The upgrade to modern gas condensing boilers represent a major reduction in running costs. It is estimated that the old boilers were running at less than 50% efficiency, almost half the levels provided by the Thision L EVO boilers, which are over 97% efficient. Furthermore, the new boilers significantly reduce harmful emissions, with NOx levels now less than 40mg/kWh, which already meet future class 6 regulations. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

High tech is key to independence Technology has come a long way in improving safety in the bathroom, but it has taken a step further to help elderly and vulnerable users. Here, Roland Boal, Head of Industrial Design at Mira Showers, looks at the importance of using the latest innovations to reduce risk.

T

he aging population is a rapidly expanding demographic in the UK, with many elderly people looking to maintain their independence as they continue to live in their own homes. However, a number of challenges can make this difficult for some, such as those with limited dexterity or sight impairment. The bathroom can prove to be one of the most hazardous rooms in the house, so it’s vital precautions are taken against risk. Roland Boal, Mira Shower’s Shower manufacturers are Head of Industrial Design responding to this growing need by developing products that provide enhanced safety features which will protect the elderly and vulnerable, while ensuring that showering is also an enjoyable experience.

Aiding visibility Those who are sight impaired are going to have to rely on other senses to safely operate a shower. One solution is to have a shower equipped with black touchpoints that are clearly visible against a white shower. A backlit power button for added emphasis is also helpful. Simple changes, such as a central matte panel that eliminates glare and reflection from lights, make showering easier, too. Temperature control is also an important consideration

provides distinctive, recognisable beeps to ensure the user is aware of when it is on, off, or has reached the desired temperature. Products specially designed for independent living can also feature audible clicks on the showerhead, indicating the change between different spray patterns, and on the central dial to highlight a change in temperature.

Mobility matters

High contrast graphics and raised tactile markings on the Mira Advance help users to better navigate its functions

for those with limited sight. A product with the latest PCB technology is recommended, as the user can programme a maximum temperature and choose from a selection of preferred temperatures at the flick of a switch. For those with limited dexterity, touchpoints with high contrast graphics and raised tactile markings make navigating shower controls straightforward. Some ranges also feature light-touch buttons for added ease and complete control. Adjusting the showerhead can also be made easier with an easy-glide, frictionless clamp bracket that enables the user to move the attachment with one hand. Enhanced audio is a key innovation in showering technology to help those with hearing impairment. This kind of audio

For the elderly, mobility can often be a challenge and therefore showers with low-level access are increasingly required. Flush-fitting, slip-resistant shower trays are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also offer additional safety benefits and significantly reduce trip and slip hazards. To ensure good functionality and quality, manufacturers are redesigning proven products and developing new ones to incorporate the latest technology that will meet the needs of the ageing population.

Tried and tested Before any shower leaves the factory, tests should be carried out to guarantee it can deliver optimum performance and provide complete safety. If full air-tests on the product and spare parts are carried out, the end user can rest assured that the product is of proven quality. Our Advance range, including the new Mira Advance Flex, incorporates practical features specially designed for vulnerable users. The range also offers thermostatic temperature control and the BEAB Care Mark, highlighting compliance with additional safety and performance criteria to ensure safer showering for all. www.mirashowers.co.uk

Good reasons to conceal the mechanics behind the wall As consumer tastes continue to swing towards minimalism in the bathroom, concealed showers are gaining in popularity. Michael Gray, Product Manager at Grohe UK, explains the growing interest.

T

he demand for concealed products is continuing to grow, suggesting a transition from traditional exposed systems to models where the mechanics are hidden behind the wall. Minimalist design has been favoured in the home in recent years, and there is no room where this is more prevalent than in the bathroom. With space often considered a valuable commodity in the bathroom, concealed shower valves are useful if there is limited space in the showering area.

Multiple benefits From a consumer perspective, there are also additional benefits such as easier and more convenient maintenance, as there is less exposed product to keep clean. Thanks to design innovation, concealed showering can equip the modern bathroom with the latest showering technology that works beautifully in any style. Modern design doesn’t have to be synonymous with a contemporary bathroom look, as some companies offer a variety of different shapes, controls and finishes in order to suit all bathrooms, from classical and heritage-style to on-trend designs. It is not only design flexibility that concealed showering can offer, but also more personalisation of the individual space in terms

42.indd 1

of layout. Positioning of a shower valve in an exposed system is limited by the length of the shower hose, however this is eliminated with a concealed shower system. The freedom to create a truly bespoke shower space is enabled thanks to the concealed valve being able to be placed on an opposing wall away from the outlet.

Enhanced experience Another USP of concealed systems are their capability to offer a multi-dimensional, high performance shower experience which is in high demand due to the trend for walkins and wetrooms and the desire to create a spa bathroom at home. Concealed systems can offer much more than just simple bath/shower combinations, allowing multiple outlets to work simultaneously, from head showers to hand showers and even body jets, for that premium shower experience. Certain models also enable extra quick and easy on-site installation for tradespeople thanks to readily accessible outlets which can be mounted using an adjustable spanner or pipe wrench.

Learning curve Concealed showering is still alien territory for many professional tradespeople, and even more so for consumers. Whilst the installation

criteria and process is seemingly more complex than traditional exposed systems, forwardthinking brands in this sector are introducing new functionalities and concepts that make installation easier than ever before, and thus a more mass market product. One of the reservations some installers have against concealed systems is that they require a recess behind the tiled wall of the shower space, and as cavity wall space varies from one property to another, it is often impossible to know whether a customer’s home will accommodate a concealed system until the installation process is underway.

Reducing the depth Typically, 100mm of depth is required for installation, and where this is not achievable, a false wall would be needed. This is not an ideal solution for either the installer or the homeowners, so some manufacturers are starting to develop methods to reduce installation depth. Some systems can be fitted in spaces as small as 75mm, meaning concealed showering is becoming more accessible for the typical UK home whilst helping to build trust amongst installers. Innovations like this will continue to evolve the concealed market and help to make it the preferred solution for the modern bathroom.

Electric evolution is pushing boundaries No longer considered unsightly or difficult to retrofit, electric showers have undergone something of a transformation in recent years. Here, Lisa Ward, Senior Product Manager at Bristan, looks at how the evolution of the technology provides installers – and their customers – with more choice than ever before.

Top shower questions installers are asking No matter how experienced a plumber may be, there always seems to be a question or two they’d like to ask when it comes to shower installation, so Triton Showers’ Steve Saunders has compiled a list of the FAQs he receives in his capacity as Senior Technical Manager.

W

ith over 25 years ex per ience of running training courses, Triton’s Senior Technical Manager Steve Saunders is well placed to answer the tricky questions that installers often ask about the many varieties of showers on the market. Here are some of the most common queries put to him. Q: How much flow can I expect to get from an electric shower? Steve Saunders A: The performance of all Senior Technical Manager temperature stabilised electric showers is governed by the following factors: kilowatt rating of the shower, water temperature entering the shower, voltage to the shower, and the preferred showering temperature. At a showering temperature of 38°C an electric shower will deliver 2.5 to 3.5 litres per minute in winter, increasing to 5-10 litres per minute during the warmer months. The higher the kilowatts, the greater the flow of water for the desired temperature selected. Q: Is it possible to connect an electric shower to a cold water cistern, and if so, what head of water is required? A: An electric shower can be fitted to a cold water cistern if the head of water is adequate. Typically, electric showers require between 0.7 and 1.5 bar minimum operating pressure. 1m of head is equivalent to 0.1 bar, therefore there must be a 7 to 15m head, depending on the manufacturer’s specifications. Head of water is measured from the base of the cold water cistern to the showerhead. Some electric showers incorporate an integral pump. These units can be installed where the base of the cold water cistern is as little as 75mm above the top of the unit. This is sufficient head to prime the pump. The showerhead can in some cases be in a negative head position.

Q: What is the minimum water pressure requirement for an electric shower designed to connect onto the mains cold water supply? A: Electric showers require a minimum operating pressure in order to activate switches controlling heating elements in the unit. A minimum flow at that pressure is also required for optimum temperature control and performance. Requirements differ for the wide range of showers on the market. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications. Examples of pressure and flow requirements are: • 8kW and 8.5kW showers: 1 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 8 litres per minute • 9 and 9.5kW showers: 1 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 9 litres per minute • 10.5kW showers: 1.5 bar minimum running pressure at a minimum flow of 11 litres per minute. In most cases the mains cold water supply will provide adequate pressure and flow. However, if the supply is unable to meet requirements, an electric shower can be connected to a cistern-fed pumped supply. Q: The thermostatic mixer shower is supplied from a combi boiler and I cannot achieve a hot enough showering temperature. What could be the problem? A: One common cause of this symptom is that the flow of water through the shower is too great and the boiler is unable to heat the water to the required temperature. Isolating the cold supply and measuring the hot water flow and temperature through the mixing valve on its maximum hot setting should establish whether this is the case. If so, it will be necessary to fit some form of flow limiting device on the inlet or outlet of the shower. The second common cause is that a blockage has occurred in the hot supply, thereby limiting the amount of hot water available to mix with the cold. Turning the temperature control of the shower to fully hot, then fully cold, should provide an indication of whether the hot and cold supply entering the mixing valve are of equal volume. Q: How do you determine the pressure a showerhead will get when a mixer shower is connected to a gravity supply?

Electric solution covers all the bases It’s good practice to make sure there is always a replacement shower in the back of the van that will appeal to a wide spectrum of people. Triton says its versatile T80 Pro-Fit electric shower delivers the quality and convenience that both customers and installers are looking for.

Retrofit Featuring eight water and eight electric entry points, the T80 Pro-Fit (priced from around £145 RRP) has endless possibilities. Carefully designed entry point trims can be put in position before or after the unit is fitted to the wall for a clean finish. Thanks to the wider channels within the backplate, pipework can run alongside cable of up to 16mm. This problem-solving shower is suitable for use with push fit, copper, or plastic pipe and compression fittings. Making installation even easier, the Swing-Fit terminal

block and dual water inlet allow for left or right pipe and cable connections. For speed, there’s also a nut and olive included in the box, which is handy when reusing an existing compression set-up.

Commission The T80 Pro-Fit can be commissioned in as little as 30 seconds. Centralised dials which only go one way onto the spindles mean no time is wasted lining up components, ensuring an errorless and wire-free cover fit.

Hard water ready The model also features Triton’s Dura-Flow heater, which helps to reduce the build-up of limescale by up to 80%, maximising the flow and extending the life of the shower. This means the T80 Pro-Fit can handle even the most demanding site conditions.

Triton’s T80 Pro-Fit model has been designed to provide an easy-to-install upgrade of an existing installation

A: The principle is that for every 1m head of water (as measured from the base of the cold water cistern to the top of the showerhead), there will be a pressure in the showerhead of 0.1 bar. This is a theoretical pressure as restrictions within pipe fittings and the shower mixing valve will reduce the pressure slightly. Provided only minimal restrictions are present in the supplies and mixing valve, the additional measurement (height) of water within the cistern will usually compensate for pressure losses in the supplies. Therefore a shower requiring 1 bar minimum operating pressure would need to be connected to a cistern located 10m above the showerhead. Q: The property has a thermal store hot water system. How many mixer showers can be fed from one of these? A: The output from a thermal store unit depends on its size (stored volume), heat transfer capability, and the water pressure entering the unit. Some are only capable of delivering sufficient hot water to one mixer shower, whereas others can supply three or four showers simultaneously. Always check before selecting any shower that the capacity of the heating appliance is compatible with the shower and required usage. Q: I have fitted a thermostatic mixer shower to a combi boiler system only to find the shower temperature is fluctuating. I thought a thermostatic mixing valve was supposed to remain at a constant temperature? A: The most common reason for this is when the combi boiler is not fully modulating (i.e. the gas flame is not regulated in sympathy with the flow of water through the heat exchange unit) and is therefore not maintaining stable hot water temperature to the shower. As hot water entering the shower increases in temperature, a thermostatic mechanism will adjust to restrict hot water entering the valve. In turn, flow through the boiler is reduced and the temperature reaches a point where the thermostat switches off the burner. Water temperature will then reduce before the thermostat resets. This will result in the shower constantly cycling between hot and cool. You simply point, shoot and diagnose the problem. quickly upgrade as the potential of the technology becomes evident in line with their growing experience.

Clear advantage

While many building applications require high thermal sensitivity to record temperature differences that are comparatively small, HVAC applications often involve significant thermal differences that are easy to spot. As a result, even a low-end camera can be helpful in providing a clear image of what’s hot and cold. This means thermal imaging, whose scope of application and earning-potential far exceeds spot measurement, is now a viable alternative to the humble pyrometer. Unlike

Smart move Features that were once only seen in high end models are now common in the troubleshooting cameras too. The combination of visual and thermal imaging on the same unit is a typical example. Image format improvements have also been made. Cameras are taking images as fully radiometric JPGs, which means all temperature data is included in the image so it can be easily incorporated into a customer report in a standard Word document.

This is a manifold that feeds a radiant system with circulator pumps, one for each manifold section. Although the temperature at points Sp1 and Sp2 are reading the same, electrical tape has been applied to Sp1, skewing the readings. As a result, fluid flow is actually at 44°C and not 30.5°C.

Profile analysis has been undertaken against a superimposed grid. On the right, line Li2 shows a colder, uneven area which should be investigated further. This may indicate changes in the thickness of the screed or in the line adhesive used for finishing. Li4, in green, highlights the thermal variation that should not occur along such a short distance of pipe.

Parallel development in PC-based analysis and reporting software, as well as application specific software, has become increasingly significant. The cost of software has also fallen in line with the purchase price of the camera. Wireless technology is another relatively new addition. It allows thermal images to be transmitted to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet PCs. In this way users can share critical information immediately with others, on-site or via email. The integration of communication technology also allows a thermal imaging camera to work in tandem with wireless enabled meters. So, measurement data from different methods can be easily correlated to make problem diagnosis speedy and efficient.

Scope of application One of the greatest benefits of thermal imaging is the diversity of application to which it can be applied. As well as being ideal for visualising the flow and return on boilers and establishing if pumps are overheating, it can also spot faults in electrical control systems. Tracing the path and integrity of underfloor pipes is also an increasingly common application as it can pinpoint the problem in seconds. In a radiant floor system invisible waves of thermal radiation rise from the heat source embedded in the floor screed, warming up any objects or material they strike. These, in turn, radiate the heat to the surface and this thermal information is easily captured by a thermal imaging camera. The above image shows a radiant circuit during start-up, digitally fusing the thermal and the visual images. This is a feature called MSX that is standard on the FLIR E series compact camera with 320 x 240 pixel detector, used here for inspecting a floor heating system. Its purpose is to enhance detail and provide greater image clarity. This image also serves to demonstrate why training is so important, because even though thermal imaging cameras become smarter, it’s important to know how best to analyse the results. It not only ensures that users get the best return on the camera investment, but also that application standards are upheld. www.flir.com ENQUIRY

The Kane 458 flue gas analyser can be used to install, service and perform safety checks on a variety of domestic, oil or gas appliances. The 458 model is based on the 456, with the addition of a dilution pump which helps protect the CO sensor from high concentrations that might otherwise damage it. The 458 analyser measures carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), differential temperature and differential pressure. The direct measurement of CO2

is achieved using a Kanedesigned infrared sensing system. Below 1% CO2, the readings of CO2 are displayed to two decimal places. The CO2 is automatically set to zero in fresh air after the initial countdown, which varies between 90 and 60 seconds depending on the ambient temperature. CO levels in ambient air can also be measured by the 458 – useful when a CO alarm is triggered. It can also perform a room CO test for up to 30 minutes. A structured

commissioning test has been included for the installation of boilers. The large display shows six readings at a time, and all data can be printed via an optional infrared printer. Two lines of 20 characters can be added to the header of printouts. The printed data can be ‘live’ or ‘stored’ data. Fires, CHIMNEYS & Flues 49

Modern materials help preserve historic homes Chimneys in older houses can present a range of challenges to installers fitting modern wood burning stoves and fireplaces. David Wright, Residential Sales and Marketing Manager for Schiedel, offers guidance on the maintenance and repair of historic chimneys and suggestions on how to bring them up to spec.

D

uring the 1960s and 70s fireplaces largely fell out of use as central heating became the most popular means of heating homes, and many were removed or bricked up. In recent years, open fires have come back into fashion, with an increasing number of homeowners keen to reinstate fireplaces in period properties – restoring grates or installing new wood-burning stoves.

Inside and out The external brickwork and mortar on older chimneys are particularly susceptible to frost damage and subsequent erosion, so regular checks of the chimney’s walls are necessary. These can be most easily made from the ground using a pair of binoculars. To ensure a successful repair, any loose or missing mortar should be replaced with a matching lime mortar, because non-breathable alternatives, such as cement, will simply lead to further problems. Loose chimney pots should be fixed firm and the lead flashing, which covers the area where the chimney meets the roof, should be inspected. Any signs of the chimney leaning should be checked out by a surveyor. If external checks and repairs to an old chimney are relatively straightforward, it’s less easy to work out what’s happening to the inside. However, if the outside of the

Abiding by Building Regulations – Part J Due to the high levels of heat emitted from flue pipes, it is essential these are installed at a safe distance from any combustible material. Building Regulation Part J stipulates the appropriate distance between the outer surface of the flue and the nearest combustible material, be it timber or thatch, or other material such as brick, which won’t burn but may heat up to a level that could cause an adjacent wooden beam to smoulder. Schiedel has developed a range of products to help installers meet the Building Regulations, ensuring safety and efficiency, whatever the construction of a property: • Isokern Double Modular – the top ring terminal vents the gap between the inner flue and outer casing, significantly reducing the temperature so it can be safely positioned adjacent to combustible material, such as wood. • Isokern pumice liners are highly insulating, ideal for use inside brick or block chimneys. • Ignis Protect pass through system – specifically designed for external walls made of combustible materials.

49.indd 1

With so many chimney varieties in the UK, it’s important to have a range of flexible solutions to carry out remedial work in older properties

chimney is showing signs of erosion, it’s likely the inside won’t be in a great shape either. A good chimney sweep will be able to advise on the state of the inside of the chimney, and telltale signs, such as loose mortar and a lot of dust, could well point to a problem. A chimney’s interior walls are likely to have been damaged by the chemical reactions of the flue gases within. These gases contain sulphates, which, when combined with moisture from water penetration or condensation, produce a weak sulphuric acid that effectively eats away at the surface. In the past, efforts were made to make chimneys airtight – to minimise the leakage of flue gases into the room – and flues were ‘parged’ or ‘pargetted’ internally, with a rough coat of lime mortar as they were built. Sadly, this pargetting deteriorates over time – it cracks, and the chimney is no longer airtight. Remedial work on older properties needs to be carried out sensitively so as not to detract from the building’s original structure and qualities, but safety standards mustn’t be compromised. Working to fit the requirements of a local authority’s historic building listings, whilst protecting the building and its inhabitants from harm and introducing efficient technologies, can be tough, but it’s a balance that must be struck.

Modern technology To ensure harmful waste gases aren’t able to seep into a room’s atmosphere, it is widely agreed that the most effective contemporary solution is the introduction of a new modern flue or chimney liner that can provide an airtight, efficient means for products of combustion to be released up and out.

There are various types of liner available – the most common are made of stainless steel and can be single or twin-walled, and flexible. Fitting is usually straightforward. Unless there are any major bends or obstructions in the chimney, a stainless steel flexible flue liner can be installed without the need to open up the chimney-breast. Twin-walled steel liners (for solid fuel and oil) or single walled liners (for gas) can generally be introduced from the top of the chimney and threaded down to the fireplace, where they can be attached to the stove or appliance via a rigid steel flue pipe.

Flexible solutions Schiedel’s Tecnoflex Plus (pictured above, right) is designed to be used with gas, oil and multifuel appliances. The liner has a corrugated outer skin and engineered joints to give it strength, and its smooth inner skin allows for easy drain down of condensates so there is less opportunity for soot to collect in the joint areas – it is also easy to sweep. If the chimney is large and access to the inside isn’t difficult, another solution would be coating the inside with a product such as Schiedel’s Isokoat. This works particularly well in old chimneys were the mortar joints between the bricks or stonework have failed. The liquid sealant is applied to the inside of the chimney under pressure so that it is forced into the cracks and fissures, strengthening the flue wall as well as offering an effective seal against escaping gases. Chimney fires are a real risk in older properties where the flue has been neglected. Having the chimney regularly swept by a NACS or HETAS approved sweep mitigates the risk as it ensures deposits of soot and tar

which build up on ledges inside – and may well eventually ignite – are removed. Heat transfer is another issue, as roof joists or other timbers were often built into the structure of the chimney in old buildings. This construction method was particularly common in thatched properties and leads to a heightened combustion risk. Many insurance companies now stipulate insulated flues for thatched homes, and there’s a move to use them more universally in period homes. Insulated flues offer superior protection against heat-transference as well as a more efficient burn. Pumice is an extremely effective insulator. It prevents undue heat transfer and helps maintain a good internal flue temperature so that the flue gases are expelled properly. For the flue to work at its optimum, it is important that the flue gases remain hot so that they continue to rise and take with them all the harmful products of combustion, including carbon monoxide. Other benefits include the fact that pumice is light and easy to handle but also strong and, once secured in place with a structural register plate, the blocks make an excellent stable structure.

Top of the pots The continued popularity of wood burning as an attractive feature and heat source in the home, combined with a desire to preserve the past, makes chimney restoration an important part of many a fireplace or stove installation. Using the latest liner and flue solutions, the character look can be retained while meeting modern standards of safety and efficiency. www.schiedel.com/uk

Claimed to be the first completely integrated gas boiler and heat pump in a single cased product, the new Murelle Revolution 30 from Sime features a 30kW boiler (which runs on mains gas or LPG) and a sealed 4kW output heat pump. The single compact unit (900 x 600 x 350mm) is aimed at the new build, social housing, and retrofit renewables markets and can be installed by any registered Gas Safe installer in a single installation process, without requiring assistance from an F-gas registered installer. Hung on the wall like a conventional boiler, the hybrid unit is able to simultaneously recover energy from an external air source and from exhaust flues. The unit provides heating and hot water and achieves an average

seasonal heating performance of 134%, granting A++ energy efficiency according to the ErP Ecodesign Regulation.

Best of both The boiler and heat pump are designed to work in tandem, with the heat pump operating first, as this makes the largest contribution to

energy efficiency. When the external temperature is higher than its minimum set value (default -7°C), the heat pump and boiler will be activated in quick succession. When the set point is reached, the boiler will then start to adjust power until the heat requirement is attained, and then both of the generators will be extinguished. If the external temperature is higher than 7°C (the value can be re-set), only the heat pump will activate. The boiler comes on only when the set temperature is not achieved by the heat pump alone. Sime General Manager Massimo Bizzotto comments: “Our Murelle Revolution 30 is a global first, and one of the most technically advanced products on the UK market. We have already seen it successfully piloted in Italy

and in Spain and we are in discussions with leading UK construction and heating clients about how the Murelle Revolution 30 will fit with their own renewable projects. Low noise unit gets on with the job Low carbon option The new Susurro, a ceiling mounted heat recovery unit from Airflow Developments, has been designed to provide continuous decentralised ventilation for office and educational environments. Featuring an aluminium cross counter flow heat exchanger, the unit recovers up to 90% of otherwise wasted heat. It also benefits from a summer bypass facility to prevent heat recovery from taking place in hot weather, thereby reducing the risk of overheating. A capillary tube system at the air outlet ensures that fresh air is supplied into the room near the ceiling. This supply air then mixes with the ambient air, before slowly

descending into the room, avoiding any uncomfortable draughts for the building occupants. All Susurro units comply to both BB101 and BB93 guidelines for educational premises and, with a virtually

inaudible noise level of just 35 dB(A) at nominal air flow, the units are said to be ideal for any working environment where occupants need to concentrate or study. No air ducts are required, so the Susurro can simply be

mounted on the wall for an easy retrofit. The units are available with a digital touch screen controller and, with air flow rates of 400, 700 and 1000 m3/h, will provide an ambient temperature range of +5°C up to 40°C. John Kelly, Marketing Manager, says: “Our new Susurro heat recovery unit is a testament to our knowledge and capability within the complex field of ventilation. These straight rung ladder rails feature digital programmable controls that enable the user to create weekly programmes specific for each day of the week. Featuring an LCD screen discretely located on the base of the rail, the controls offer a series of options including automatic, comfort, night, antifreeze, key lock, and a two-hour

boost. The option of an infrared remote control is also available. Both rails also feature an ambient room sensor. This feature enables the towel rail to accurately sense the room temperature as well as the rail itself, enabling the user to adjust the heat setting accordingly, or move the towels to provide more heat to the room.

The new rails are constructed from high quality steel and come complete with all fixtures and fittings, enabling simple and speedy installation. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Conditioner treats the water without the fuss As an alternative way of treating domestic water, Stuart Turner offers its range of water conditioners which are based on methods used in commercial and industrial systems. These WRAS approved devices are designed to prevent limescale from building up throughout a property, and the water remains drinkable at the tap. They use an electrolytic action to treat the water, and contain an alloy core that acts as a catalyst that causes the calcium carbonate to precipitate into microscopic

crystals. These crystals then float in suspension in the water without adhering to any surfaces, ensuring that boilers, cylinders and kettles, for example, remain scale

free and efficient for years. There is no requirement for bags of salt and the added expense of installing a drinking water tap. The Stuart range of water conditioners offers a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution, which is simply installed in-line with the existing incoming pipework. They don’t take up valuable space, either. These maintenance free water conditioners are guaranteed for 10 years. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.
