Cold homes causing too many deaths in the UK

Age UK is calling on the Government to be more ambitious about tackling fuel poverty as statistics show that death rates in winter are significantly higher for those living in the coldest homes.

factors play a greater role in excess winter deaths than the weather itself. “Colder countries like Sweden are better at protecting older people from the cold,” she says. Age UK believes that the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) must be reformed quickly to ensure that it reaches far more people in need. It's also calling for a new, improved scheme to replace the now defunct Green Deal to support those who can afford to

pay to invest in energy efficiency at home. It is thought that these steps will play a crucial role in eradicating fuel poverty and reducing cold-related illness and deaths among older people. As part of its appeal, Age UK has been promoting Cold Homes Week in the first days of February to spread its message via social media platforms. The charity is asking for public support for reform of energy efficiency programmes, to make energy efficiency a national infrastructure priority, and to commit to bringing two million UK low income homes up to Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Band C by 2020 and all six million low income homes up to EPC Band C by 2025. “What is really needed is a belt and braces approach to eradicating cold homes," comments Caroline Abrahams. “The Government must be far more ambitious about tackling fuel poverty by introducing a comprehensive energy efficiency programme to help those who are most at risk from the cold.”

As the solar market develops in the UK, the in terms of added values when respondents Solar Trade Association argues that having were presented with a list of smart technology rooftop panels is likely to add value to a for the home. “There is already evidence from the UK home’s selling price. The STA draws on a study conduced in eight American states which and beyond that homebuyers are willing to showed that homes with solar PV sell for an pay a premium for a home with solar on average of $4000 more per installed kilowatt it,” says Paul Hutchens, Chair of the STA than equivalent homes without solar. Such a New Build Solar Working Group. “A home premium would amount to almost £10,000 for with solar has lower energy bills and is a typical UK domestic PV installation, due to therefore cheaper to run. A solar system the value of the electricity they will produce can also generate a small income for the homeowner, thanks to the Feed-in Tariff, over their lifetime of 25 years. In November, Barclays Mortgages published and payments for any electricity exported. the results of an online poll carried out by This value should logically be translated into YouGov which found that homeowners would house prices.” The STA recently pay onTHISION average £2000 more for a property ELCO S+_PHAM 70x274.qxp_Layout 1 29/01/2016 11:17 Page 1 published a study setting with solar PV. Solar panels ranked highest out what research needs to be done in order

to establish whether solar homes currently attract a sales premium on the UK housing market. Initial interviews with house builders, surveyors and mortgage lenders confirmed that there is generally a poor understanding of the costs and benefits of adding solar to a property, and no formal process for assessing the value. “With over 750,000 UK homes having gone solar over the last five years alone, more and more of these are going to start changing hands. US research has shown that solar adds significant value to homes there. We now want to show that the same applies in the UK and hope that relevant data can be made available to provide hard evidence of this,” concludes Paul Hutchens.

The link between fuel poverty and excess winter deaths has been highlighted by Age UK as it calls on the Government to urgently reform its energy efficiency programme so that all older people can afford to live in a warm home. The charity says that each winter, one older person dies every seven minutes from cold weather related deaths, a figure which amounted to 40,800 deaths in England and Wales last winter alone. “It is virtually impossible for many older people to keep their home as warm as it should be in the winter months,” says Caroline Abrahams, Age UK’s Charity Director. “For too many, the struggle to keep adequately warm will have life and death consequences – something we should feel deeply ashamed of in a country as affluent as ours.” The charity points out that UK homes are among the most expensive to heat in Europe and the country has the highest level of fuel poverty among a dozen comparable EU nations. concerns about apprentice costs A survey of firms in the UK construction industry has revealed that 30% of companies are less likely to employ an apprentice aged over 25 because of the financial pressures brought about new pay legislation. From April this year, apprentices aged over 25 will see their pay increased from £6.70 to the national living wage of £7.20. The survey of 1000 firms, conducted by construction payroll provider Hudson Contract, suggests widespread concern about the rise, despite 24% of construction employers stating that they see apprentices aged 25+ as being more experienced, whilst a quarter consider them to be more reliable than younger apprentices. When it comes to the age debate, 81% of firms said that they employ apprentices under the age of 25, with 47% claiming their apprentice stays with the business for up to three years after completing their apprenticeship. This compared to 34% who stay with the company for up to five years and 14% who last up to 10 years – suggesting

that apprentices are still seen as a long-term investment. Ian Anfield, MD of Hudson Contract, comments: “With the construction industry one of the biggest apprenticeship employers, we wanted to gauge the opinions of our building clients across the UK who will ultimately be impacted by the new legislation. “Despite the findings indicating that nearly half of firms will be hit financially by the legislation and around a third may potentially be deterred from employing an apprentice aged 25 and over, it was reassuring that 42% of firms will employ an apprentice based on ability, rather than age.”

Gas detection specialist Crowcon is sponsoring a scientific expedition to the volcanoes of the South American Andes with the loan of its Gas-Pro portable gas detectors. The ‘Trail by Fire’ expedition is run by the Royal Geographical Society and is the first to attempt to undertake a large scale estimate of the volatile gases expelled by active volcanoes along 2500 miles of the Andes. Extreme conditions make safety a priority and the personal gas detectors are able to play a critical role. They not only provide an additional source of data, but also monitor average exposure levels and alert team members to potentially lethal concentrations of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide.

Editor’s Viewpoint by Chris Jones

Too high a price to pay Relatively mild winter temperatures, together with a small drop in prices from a number of our big energy companies, has meant that many UK residents have probably spent slightly less on their fuel bills this year compared to 12 months ago. It’s a boost to household budgets that has been widely welcomed, not least in the corridors of Westminster where Government ministers must be delighted that the cost of energy issue can be pushed further down the agenda – at least for the time being. With no immediate crisis to worry about, the Government has wasted no time in reducing its commitment to renewable technologies and other schemes to promote energy efficiency. But this month’s front cover story suggests that such complacency is misplaced. According to Age UK, an alarming number of old people continue to die by not keeping sufficiently warm and our homes are among the most expensive to heat in Europe. The charity has called on the Government to be more ambitious about tackling fuel poverty and to invest more money in improving efficiency levels. There’s no getting away from the fact that rising fuel costs have generally been good for the heating industry, spurring homeowners to invest in energy saving measures and enhancing their existing system, but it is only natural that such improvements are slightly less pressing when the cost of heating becomes a secondary concern. It would be reassuring to think that our politicians were not so ready to put things on the back burner. Failure to act may prove expensive in the long run and statistics suggest that too many people are paying for it with their lives. Follow us on

A good time to be Green cuts affect boiler sales In brief in bathroom sector Figures released by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council show that sales of domestic boilers within the UK during 2015 fell compared with 2014. The HHIC blames the lack of energy efficiency schemes such as the Green Deal and ECO for the drop of 1.9%. Total sales in 2014 in the UK were 1,663,398 compared to 1,631,386 in 2015. Stewart Clements, Director of HHIC, says: “Green Deal and the ECO programme contributed to the market during 2014 and their cancellation or reduction has seen sales of boilers within the UK fall in 2015. The

A new report from MTW Research on the UK bathroom market suggests that bathroom retailers’ sales will outperform the UK economy in 2016, with sustainable growth forecast for the year with consumer spending remaining high. The 190 page report illustrates how consumers are spending more time in the bathroom with a focus on wellness, luxury and relaxation. MTW also identifies the Internet of Things market (IoT) as offering significant growth on items such as smart showers, remote lighting and Bluetooth speaker integrated mirrors, with a

focus on ‘connected’ and digitally controllable bathrooms. The report also identifies the strong growth for products suitable for multigenerational households. This has strengthened demand for bathroom products that offer greater accessibility and ease of use for the whole family. Bathroom retailers have also received a boost from an ageing population and affluent 50+ ‘empty nesters’ who have greater access to funds. The report is available for £595 from MTW Research’s website: www. marketresearchreports.co.uk

underlying market remains stable and we hope that as people renovate and refurbish their homes and new build programmes are extended, 2016 will see sales start to rise.” In contrast, the commercial boiler market has seen an upswing of 2.4% in sales, according to the Industrial & Commercial Energy Association (ICOM). Ross Anderson, Director of ICOM, says: “Improvements in the construction sector and the general economy account for the increase in sales witnessed in 2015. Forecasts for 2016 are positive, which is good news.”

Power tool theft still a risk Power tools are the most stolen item from building sites and workers in construction, with small traders suffering most from crime, according to security equipment installation and servicing company, CCTV.co.uk. The Yorkshire based company says that smaller, easyto-fence items are more likely to be stolen. Power tools top the list of stolen items, followed by bags of cement, ladders and plant machinery. Other items ripe for theft include wheelbarrows, building materials, cables, metals, personal items

such as radios and phones, and hand tools. Jonathan Ratcliffe from CCTV.co.uk says: “Power tools are far and away the most vulnerable item because they have a high resale value, and they’re usually portable. Such is the specialised nature of

such stolen goods – they can only be resold to rogue traders looking to equip themselves cheaply and with little care to the crime victims in their own profession. Buying stolen professional tools on the quiet isn’t a victimless crime.”

Anniversary rebrand exercise Marketing success Having recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, HiB has unveiled a new brand identity and strap line – ‘making bathrooms beautiful’. As the company looks toward the next 25 years, it decided to transform its image to better represent the products and services it offers the domestic and hospitality sectors. To achieve its aim, HiB recruited a specialist brand agency, talked to customers

and staff, and deployed mystery shoppers to find out exactly what the business meant to them. Robert Ginsberg, MD at HiB, comments: “Since its inception, the business has grown at an unprecedented

rate, evolving to not only become one of the biggest names in the bathroom industry, but a business which is synonymous for pushing boundaries in bathroom innovation.” HiB has also invested in a new website (www.hib. co.uk) and brochure. The website provides visitors with comprehensive information about the manufacturer’s product portfolio.

A number of innovative campaigns have helped Polypipe Building Products to win ‘Marketing Team of the Year’ at the 2015 Construction Marketing Awards. These included a campaign for the company’s PolyMax streamline push-fit plumbing range. Targeted at installers and merchants, the promotion saw 50,000 installers receive free PolyMax samples and included a ‘Win A Van’ competition spearheaded by ‘Max the Plumber’, the face of PolyMax. Rachel Smith, Marketing Communications Manager, says: “This is such an exciting achievement for us. Our marketing team has worked incredibly hard, increasing installer awareness and ultimately demand for our products and solutions. It is an honour to be recognised as Marketing Team of the Year and we have big plans to continue our campaigns in 2016.”

10 News Review Non-compliant pumps entering market Promo gives away free remote control

Heating and plumbing product specialist Westco is backing calls for action over illegal pump imports, following claims by the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) that there is “growing evidence of illegal pump imports entering the UK”. Westco has expressed concern over the use of products that do not meet the demands of the EU Energy-related Products Directive. The BPMA is calling on the UK’s market surveillance authority – the National Measurement Regulatory Office (NMRO) – to take action, expressing fears that

Nick Horton, Westco MD

a failure to do so could “cost bona fide companies millions of pounds in lost revenue”, put jobs at risk, and affect the reputations of some suppliers. The Association

says that non-ErP compliant pumps have not been tested and approved to the same legislative standard as compliant products, and are therefore not guaranteed to run as efficiently and cost effectively. Expressing his support for action, Westco MD Nick Horton says: “Accreditation and safety are crucial to merchants and installers alike, and it’s vital that we do everything we can to protect our industry from unscrupulous exploitation. The ErP sets a standard for energy efficiency we all want to achieve, and it is worrying that sub-standard

If it works, why change it? I could not agree more with Brian Penny’s letter in the last issue of Pham News. All of the scrappage schemes that the Government has instigated has lead to a lot of perfectly good and usable items being scrapped. My old Ideal Mexico cast iron, floor standing unit is at least 35 years old. I have changed the thermocouple once, but so long ago I can’t remember exactly when. With no fancy circuit board components to ‘expire’, what else is there

to go wrong? A few years ago it began to ‘kettle’ when first starting in the morning, but after flushing the system out and refilling with softened water (something one is cautioned not to do with modern boilers) it has remained as quiet as a mouse. At the last test, the firing efficiency was as good as a condensing boiler, bar the flue gas temperature of course. So where is the incentive for changing it? Paul Kalbskopf MRICS, Chippenham

£100 Star Letter The old ones are the best I write with reference to Bria n Penny’s views ‘New is not always best’ in the January edition. I agree with most of what he has to say. It is all very well to desig n a low water use WC and test it in a laboratory, but insta ll one on a 50 year old system, where the drains are clay and have a build up of scale in them, and the solids and tissue don’t travel far from the outlet of the pan. If you then have no other appliances discharging upstream to help keep the solids moving, then a rapid build-up occurs and then we are called to put the drain rods into action. This has happened to me on two occa sions in the past couple of months (neither was my insta llation). Call me a dinosaur, but I am an honorary member of the ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it’ club unless I can be persuaded that the new version is better and more reliable than the existing one. We all have to abide by the rules and fit what is decreed by the regu lations, but if it doesn’t work then

people will find their own solution to the problem which works but costs the least. Why did we go away from flush syphons when they never leaked or wasted water? There were supposed to have been exhaustive tests on the new flush valves to ensure they performed effectively and did not leak before they were allowed to be used. How many properties have we all been to where water is conti nual ly runn ing into the pan? Let’s go back to syphons (two part ones of course), easy to repa ir and no wastage. I am often frustrated by some of the poor qual ity products I am requ ired to fit. I can walk into an old local authority house and find a big old gate valve that has a big cast wheel head and is probably 50 years old and feel quietly confident that it will shut off. If I find one about five years old I am probably looki ng to repla ce it! Peter Leonard Norw ich

The new generation of Prestige wall hung boilers from ACV are now available. With an extended range of 4 models in sizes 50kW, 75kW, 100kW and 120kW there is a prestige boiler suited to almost every commercial application. At the core of the Prestige is ACV’s unique, self-cleaning stainless steel heat exchanger, developed and improved after intensive research and laboratory testing. The use of stainless steel provides unparalleled resistance to corrosion and the additives used in modern heating systems; we believe the durability of the material makes it a reliable and efficient choice. Further innovation in the new generation of Prestige boiler is the all new ACVMAX® system control, which has been designed to be flexible yet easy to use. The new control panel with integrated manometer and LCD provide all the necessary information with the simple push of a button. As well as monitoring the boiler to ensure optimal efficiency, the ACVMAX® offers many advanced control options, including control of up to 4 boilers in cascade without the extra expense of an additional controller, and native support for open protocols such as OpenTherm® 3.2 and Modbus® enabling easy integration into Building Management Systems (BMS). Operating the Prestige in cascade offers a modulation ratio of 1:73 a highly flexible output from the minimum output of one unit to 100% of the combined power of all the boilers. Prestige boilers can be installed in a cascade from 2 to 8 units with a maximum combined output of 920kW. A cascade installation greatly improves the system efficiency and

fuel usage resulting in reduced running costs and helps keep emissions to a minimum. The prestige boiler also now comes with an integrated non-return flue valve to make fluing options easier when considering a cascade system. The new prestige boiler has been developed for ease of installation, maintenance and efficiency which will benefit the installer and end user. All parts are serviceable from the front of the unit by removing the front cover, which cuts down on service time. The improved ACVMAX® system control also has an easy menu structure which covers up to 80% of standard installations, easy diagnostics and full text error messages and problem solving information. The connections on the underside of the prestige give easy access during installation with the added benefit of being in the same position as the previous models. All the accessories required for a cascade installation are available from ACV.

Green Matters 15 Energy Campus

Concern over proposed VAT rise on solar A government consultation is proposing a 15% VAT rise on domestic solar panels and other renewable energy products, according to BSRIA. The consultat ion closes on 3rd February, with the changes set to come into effect on 1st August, if approved. The consultation was begun after the European Court of Justice ruled last year that Britain’s 5% rate on the supply and installation

Stiebel Eltron has opened a €16.5 million Energy Campus at its company headquarters in Holzminden, Germany. The centre for training and development will play host to an estimated 6000 training participants from across the renewables industry per year. It is intended that the centre will become an international facility for all of Stiebel Eltron’s market partners, from architects to tradesmen. The 4000m2 site comprises meeting and conference rooms, along with theory and practice rooms. In the practice rooms visitors can get hands-on experience in areas themed around heat pump systems, ventilation systems, hot water and installation. Stiebel Eltron heat pump technology is a key element

of the heating and cooling supply for the Energy Campus, drawing its energy from groundwater. The Stiebel Eltron UK team, headed by MD Mark McManus, will be taking groups of clients and industry partners to visit the centre this year. Mark says: “I attended the inauguration ceremony and was blown away by the campus. It is show-stopping and I very much look forward to visiting again with clients and contacts. Importantly, the Energy Campus shows that the house of the future – with its own electricity production and environmentally friendly and sustainable building services based on heat pumps as key elements – works and can be economically realised and operated.”

of energy saving products breached its VAT Directive. To comply with the rules, HMRC has launched a consultation on proposals which will see products such as insulation and woodfuelled boilers remain at the reduced 5% rate, justifying it under a part of the VAT Directive which allows a reduced tax rate for energy saving products which ‘renovate’ a property. However, HMRC says

items such as solar panels have to be excluded as “their installation cannot properly be said to ‘renovate’ a property (rather, they simply serve to generate electricity)”. Julia Evans, Chief Executive of BSRIA, says: “The key issue here is about the various energy definitions and what falls into which VAT section. Responses to the consultation need to try to move solar panels into the

‘renovation definition’ – like the French have – and not fall foul of the proposed 20% VAT obligation. In order to assist this, BSRIA is urging members and the industry to complete the consultation. “More and more, BSRIA is getting the impression that energy and carbon reduction issues are being viewed as a burden to Government which is inhibiting not only the industry, but the economy at large.”

Carbon countdown Having demonstrated its continuing commitment to carbon reduction, Mitsubishi Electric has been re-certified with the Carbon Trust Standard. The recertification is based on how the company is successfully measuring, managing and reducing carbon emissions at its Hatfield headquarters. The latest assessment of the company’s Hatfield site shows that the company has achieved both a 9.2% absolute reduction in its footprint and an 18.1% relative reduction measured against turnover. The report states that Mitsubishi Electric: “has achieved a considerable reduction in absolute CO2 during the latest assessment period compared to the best performing organisation in the sector”. Successful certification against the Carbon Trust Standard requires organisations to demonstrate good all-round carbon management performance in their day-to-day operations.

18 Business Matters

Cracking the social media puzzle Using social media channels to help promote your business can be a daunting prospect for those who prefer more traditional means of communication, but could you be missing out on a central piece of the marketing jigsaw? Fiona Carter offers a helpful guide for beginners.

U

sing social network marketing provides any business with a cost-effective opportunity to interact with potential customers to find out what they really want. Research shows that customers want to be listened to and they are more likely to be swayed by validations from others than by aggressive advertising. This is all particularly useful to plumbers and HVAC contractors who rely heavily on word of mouth to promote their business and this is about the sense of trust in the quality of your work – which is obviously essential in this business. As you know, by creating a conversation and building up relationships with your customers they are more likely to trust and value you as a professional and retain your services. Social media is just an extension of this. It works by interacting with customers or potential customers; the only difference is that it is not face-to-face communication. But using social media can be a very useful way of dealing effectively with any customer concerns, queries or complaints and can therefore help protect your reputation.

Rapid response Even if you are not interested in social media, others are! For example, if a customer has a gripe about your work they may well resort to Twitter or Facebook to air their grievances. If you are on Twitter or Facebook then you will quickly be made aware of any potential problems and will hopefully be able to nip them in the bud. Without your own social media accounts, you may miss both good and any less favourable comments that could be made. Social media marketing should be viewed as an important part of any marketing strategy, as it is an effective way to get more visits to your website, gain attention for your business products and services, build up your customer base and ultimately result in a more profitable business.

Jargon buster The problem with social media is that it is caught up in jargon that many people do not understand and shy away from. While I tried to avoid using it here as much as possible, it is hard to write about social media without using some jargon, so I have included a list of definitions: On-line communities – Groups of people communicating with each other on computer based applications such as Facebook, Twitter or specialist networking groups. Optimised – Search engines, such as Google, look for relevant, quality, well-written content that also uses words and phrases that people search for on the web. If your website is well optimised you will be found more easily and you are more likely to get people to visit your website. Blog – A blog is a personal online journal or commentary that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. You can have a blog set up on your website or even set up a separate one. If you have one on your website you can build up people to follow you and send short messages which could be questions, advice, market research or information about products and services. Keyword Optimised – Keywords are words and phrases that people search for on a search engine such as Google. URL (Uniform Resource Locator) – This is a specific website name which is unique to a website, or page on a bigger website, e.g. if you type the following address into a search bar it will take you directly to my website: http://www.bournemouth-marketing-advertising-pr. com/marketing/social-media-marketing

18.indd 1

do. Both Twitter and Facebook are informal in the style of communication and you can be playful and have fun with it, but they still have the potential to generate powerful results. But, as with Twitter, it is important to remember to try to build up a two-way dialogue and give useful information to potential customers – not solely pushing your business. Facebook allows you to develop a timeline that reflects the growth of your company and the milestones it has reached. To be successful, write quality content, have an engaging manner and then connect with your audience. LinkedIn is very much a business-to-business tool for professionals and allows you to create a keyword optimised profile (see jargon buster panel). You can participate in discussion groups and connect with potential customers. In terms of priorities, I would recommend focusing on Facebook and Twitter before moving on to this. There are not many businesses who wouldn’t want either more customers or better paying customers. Using social media will help you build up your customer base – it’s also worth bearing in mind that even if you decide to not get involved, there are likely to be many competitors who will take a different view!

Where to start? Well, there is so much out there so I am going to concentrate on the four forms of social media which will be the most likely for you to get the best return for your investment. Remember, it is possible to use social media for free, although you can use various add on advertising packages. The biggest challenge is in getting started. Twitter is good for getting your name out there and letting people know that you exist. It is very useful for market research and helps drive people to your website. This is something that you need to do regularly, really at least two to three times a week. You need to start following others that are relevant to your business and then they will begin to follow you. But rather than just sending out sales messages, it is best to engage with your audience by sending ‘tweets’ or retweeting others with your own comments to show that you have your own unique perspective on these. Once someone has followed you, they will receive any tweets that you make. The real skill lies in developing a two-way dialogue and avoiding sales-based messages by tweeting about your customers’ concerns and interests rather than yourself. You can do this by asking questions of your customers that show you value your their opinions. For example, ‘how satisfied are you with the performance of your central heating?’ But be prepared to respond and hopefully find a resolution which may (or may not!) include hiring your services. This is also an opportunity to share hints and tips which once again help to build up trust. Industry training topics can be used to good effect here. Twitter is probably one of the easiest forms of social media to use, and one of its strongest characteristics is that it is immediate and excellent for alerting people to time/date related events, special offers or news. Currently you can only write 140 characters and spaces, but there are future plans to expand this. Facebook works in a similar way to Twitter but probably takes longer to build up a list of friends. However, you can use it to build a good reputation for your business. Good examples of plumbing and HVAC contractors using Facebook can be seen where they include photos of their work and display customer endorsements. Including a video on Facebook will allow you to demonstrate your personality and passion for what you

YouTube is currently the second biggest search engine, and the power of video on this site is immense. These can vary from expert interviews to ‘how to’ slide shows. A properly constructed video accompanied by a title which is keyword optimised makes it easy to find and will have its own unique website name. Ideally it is best to add explanatory notes to your video containing important messages. Of course, the cost of this can vary, but ultimately it is better to have some input from marketing experts, even if you don’t want to go the whole hog and commission your own video.

Key aims In summary, your social media marketing needs to be part of your marketing mix and budget, and the aim of the game is to: • Create a ‘buzz’ about your business • Focus on two-way communication • Build up a network of contacts, such as people who follow you back on Twitter, become friends with you on Facebook, or follow you on Facebook • Listen to your customers • Generate leads • Build company/brand awareness • Create offers by sending tweets or posts to your contacts

Seeking advice So if you are now convinced that you do need to incorporate social media marketing into your overall marketing, what is the next step? Many companies try to do all the social media marketing themselves or get their teenage children to do it for them (with differing degrees of success!). There are of course agencies that will manage the whole process for you, but at a cost. Another option is get professional help and guidance in the early stages of setting up accounts and deciding upon a strategy. This should be tailor-made to both your experience and your budget and would need to include training so that you or your colleagues can do weekly or day-to-day updates on your accounts. So if you are concerned about growing your business, investing a bit of time, effort and marketing budget on social media can certainly pay dividends. For many people it all seems like too much effort, especially when you have your core business activities to be getting on with and invoices to chase, but just half an hour spent on social media at the beginning or end of the day – plus 10 minutes here and there between jobs – could prove to be time well spent. Part G – the final three requirements

Gain hands-on experience

Concluding his in-depth look at the New Approved Document G, industry expert John Griggs provides an overview of G4 (sanitary conveniences), G5 (bathrooms) and G6 (food preparation areas). G4 Sanitary conveniences and washing facilities

The final part of the Guidance to G4 is about ‘discharges to drains’. This This section of G has been is mainly similar to other frequently moved and redrainage guidance in Parts numbered. In 1990 it was G4, 5 and 6 of G, but it has one then in 1992 it became G1, and significant exception. This is in 2010 it reverted to G4, where the only guidance to mention it remains in the 2015 edition. the option of a ‘trap or In addition to re-numbering, mechanical seal’ and it offers the content of the requirement this option only for urinals. has frequently been shuffled The last paragraph of the around and the guidance Guidance is a note about regularly expanded. This would seem to be more relevant to G1, where hand washing for WCs, the later requirements have been expanded to alternative sources of water are mentioned, cover all ‘sanitary conveniences’, which now but here it is pointing out that if greywater recycling is used the reduction in drainage includes urinals. The key word in this requirement, as is flows should be taken into account when so often the case in Building Regulations, designing the drainage system. is ‘adequate’. This is not a precise term and G5 Bathrooms hence the associated guidance turns to This simply defines a bathroom as a room with other regulations and guidance documents. a washbasin and either a bath or a shower. Conclusion G3(4) only limits hot water to baths. So there The new edition of Part G is very similar to the is little guidance in the English Regulations 2010 version with the exception of G2 that has been extensively revised to include a simpler about hand washing supplies. As the Guidance to G4 includes a section calculation method for water consumption on ‘chemical and composting toilets’, there is in dwellings. The remainder of Part G is clearly an option to provide sanitary facilities clearly in need of revision and updating. We that are not connected to the mains water or can expect a more comprehensive revision drainage system, and in those circumstances within the next couple of years, but for those the provision of a hot water supply to a wash who are dealing with water and appliance basin, and a drain from it, would seem to be installations, the current Part G needs to be either a barrier to using waterless facilities read and understood. I hope that this column or an opportunity to use a waterless form of over the past few months has provided a better understanding. hand cleansing and sanitising. John Griggs has worked in water supply and drainage research for over 30 years and represented the UK on various European and International Standards committees. Installers who want to be more familiar with the latest piping systems and sanitary solutions may want to take advantage of free training available at the Geberit Training Academy. The company reports that record numbers of installers passed through its doors last year and is expecting places to fill up fast for the new courses lined up for 2016. Geberit runs modules dedicated to its piping systems and sanitary solutions, with the two running over consecutive days to enable customers to attend both if they are relevant to their business, with minimal disruption to their work schedules. Sanitary systems training covers methods for fitting and maintaining wall-hung sanitaryware, empowering

CDM course designed for sole traders

108

The new online CDM course from NICEIC is aimed at sole trader electrical contractors, but will also provide gas engineers with an overview of their legal requirements. Previously, CDM (Construction, Design and Management) requirements were more relevant to larger commercial or industrial projects, but since April 2015,

CDM requirements now apply to all domestic projects which include alterations, repairs and maintenance. The course is aimed at equipping an individual with an understanding of their role within a domestic project and the relationship which needs to be established with the main contractor. The course covers: brief

overview of what the CDM regulations relate to; the change and its implication on domestic properties; the relationship between client, main contractor and sub-contractor (electrician); the requirements for the production of a safety file; and what the electrical contractor may be required to provide for inclusion into

the safety file (which includes the risk assessment, method statement, materials file and competence file). The course takes around three hours to complete, but with online learning registrants can spread out that learning at times to suit them. The course costs £40 + VAT and can be booked at www.niceic.direct.com

PIPES Fittings & Valves 23

The pressing need for speed and reliability Speed of application and dependability are crucial considerations for any project, but are even more important in the commercial sector. Kate Armstrong, Product Manager at Wavin, explains how press-fit plumbing systems can deliver the high performance required.

W

ith increasing numbers of large scale projects from commercial to high-rise apartments going up across the UK, speed of application as well as reliability are crucial considerations for both installers and clients. Large developments such as apartment blocks and hotels, schools and hospitals have particular needs when it comes to plumbing systems. They require high performance, robust components and systems which can provide effective, simple installation combined with reliability over the long term. Clients developing high-rise apartment buildings and hotels typically prioritise fast completion in order to maximise revenue and meet demand from buyers, however they also want peace of mind that services such as plumbing systems will not fail or cause installation issues. Schools and hospital projects similarly need to be able to finish on time and open their doors as quickly as possible, but may have even more stringent requirements from plumbing systems such as the recirculation of water which fights legionella growth.

Short-term gains In the short-term, achieving reliability as well as speed in plumbing installations for large-scale buildings comes down to ensuring that the system chosen is able to make life as simple as possible for installers, while ensuring installations are safe, robust and reliable before the water is turned on. Press-fit systems provide a lightweight, safe installation method which requires no soldering, welding or thread-cutting, and avoid the hassle of obtaining daily hot works insurance permits. Our Tigris K1 system, for example, is a high performance plumbing system which has been developed specifically to provide the simplicity allied to performance which commercial and other large scale projects require. In terms of assembling joints, the less effort for installers means the less time spent on site, and Tigris K1’s press fittings have a patented hexagonal head shape which facilitates an easy, as well as secure installation, reducing time and cost. The press fittings are constructed from high performance polyphenylsulphone (PPSU) proven over many years’ use in the aircraft and automotive engineering industries, medical sterilisation and chemical plants.

The Tigris K1 multilayer press-fitting system is suitable for a wide range of potable water, sanitary and heating applications

Robustness of fittings is essential for short-term and long-term performance of large plumbing installations such as those found in high rise apartment buildings or hospitals. Our fittings have a fixed stainless steel press sleeve which gives added strength and reliability, and for installers’ convenience an observation window has been designed into the sleeve which shows clearly whether a pipe has been inserted to the correct depth.

Resistance to scale Long term performance is ensured as a result of the Tigris K1 10 year guarantee for the whole system, which is accounted for in part by the fittings’ high resistance to scale buildup and stress cracking. The material is also resistant to corrosion, encrustation and high temperature (with no deformation under 200°C). Another major long term reliability benefit for large-scale installations is the Defined Leak function which is designed into the fitting, showing up leaks as soon as the pressure test is undertaken. Accidentally unpressed connections will be unsealed by the pressure test which means they can be remedied then and there rather than failing down the line and resulting in a costly call-back for the client. Versatility of plumbing systems is important for larger projects, and a multi-layer pipe construction provides an effective combination of flexibility, pressure resistance and thermal resistance which can enable a system to be used in a variety of settings. The flexibility offered by composite pipes means that fewer connectors are required, significantly reducing cost and improving flow rates. The inner layer of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-c) and outer high density polyethylene (HDPE) layer sandwich an aluminium internal layer which provides not only dimensional stability but also resistance to thermal expansion comparable to copper, making Tigris K1 ideal for use in recirculating ring mains. These systems maintain water at over 60°C and are popular in healthcare and other facilities which are focused on minimising legionella risk, broadening the range of applications for the system.

Made to last

The Tigris K1 system is ideal for hospitals and other health care and hygiene sensitive applications

(PP-R) shows that, in the case of a high temperature system with water at 80°C, the life expectancy of the system would be 134 years for PEX-c and 40 years for PP-R. In the case of a 0.5ppm chlorine disinfected system at 60°C, PEX-c would have a 66 year life and PP-R a 23 year life. The final verification of a system’s reliability comes from comprehensive certification from recognised bodies, as well as being subject to constant internal scrutiny of production quality and external monitoring. Tigris has and continues to undergo rigorous testing and is certified to EN-ISO 21003 and BS 6920:2000. The system is also approved by Europe’s largest water certification body DVGW, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) and respected UK certifier KIWA, giving specifiers and installers confidence they are choosing a high quality system. Beautiful bathrooms need quiet plumbing When putting in a new bathroom, it would be a shame for a beautiful finish to be accompanied by noisy pipework because acoustics were not taken into account at the design stage. Victoria Willis, Product Manager for Geberit, takes a look at this important issue.

W

hen specifying a customer’s bathroom, the focus is usually on how it looks and how it functions, considerations based on product choices and where these products fit within the space. There is another element you should be thinking about, one that you can’t see but is just as important as style and usability – sound. Too much noise is a key problem for many bathrooms, disturbing other users of a building, particularly in flats and hotels which have multiple floors and multiple bathrooms.

Domestic tranquillity Noisy bathrooms are a problem for nearly all of us. According to our own research, 90% of people have been disturbed by waste water noise, with 55% of tenants stating they’d pay a little more rent if bathroom noises were reduced. Many of your customers may just view clunking pipes and wooshing cisterns as part and parcel of the washroom experience, something that there is little that can be done about. This is not the case: noise, just like style and functionality, can be controlled and reduced by employing good design techniques and choosing products that help reduce bathroom sounds. If you count flats and hotel owners amongst your customer base, reducing washroom noises Geberit Silent-db20 provides built-in sound insulation is even more important – it’s one thing to tolerate members of your own family waking you up using the bathroom at night – it’s quite another if you’re being disturbed by guests or residents in an adjacent apartment or room. Despite the direct effect of noisy bathrooms on a good

night’s sleep, in Geberit’s opinion bathroom acoustics are often not considered at the design and specification stage, with the guidance that is in place falling short of the actual requirements of real buildings.

Sound advice The industry standards for pipework testing in particular does not go far enough in our opinion. European Standard EN 14366m measures noise generated by drainage pipes, behind and in front of the installation wall, with noise levels measured applied to specific building situations in a limited way. Drainage pipe noise is measured without connections to appliances and in an artificial room layout. Pipework is exposed, causing airborne noise that is unlikely in a real bathroom, and solid borne sound is measured through a concrete wall – an unrealistic scenario. Toilet flushing, filling noise and water flow are all excluded from the tests. The test reports often ignore the types of system components too – which bracket, pipe and fittings? By looking at the whole system, including pipework layout and product choices, set up in a UK bathroom, we can provide a better insight into actual disturbances and how to combat them.

Dealing with decibels In terms of decibels (dB), bathrooms should produce no more than 40dB, with bedrooms needing to be below 30dB in order for occupants to get a good night’s sleep. Bad bathroom choices can create dBs of over 50 – far too noisy for the average person. Noise is caused by a number of bathroom essentials – cisterns, water in the soil stack, and travelling through the pipes. Waste water noise in particular is neglected in planning, with installation elements having direct contact with walls and floors. Some drainage pipes do not include any kind of noise absorption.

Location matters In new builds, or refurb projects where the bathroom location is up for discussion, it’s important that washrooms are located far away from the main living spaces. In flats, for

Strength combined with flexibility The Gerpex Multi-layer Composite Pipe (MLCP) range from Emmeti provides a solution for modern building projects and is said to offer all of the advantages of both plastic and metal pipes. The internal aluminium layer provides rigidity, form retention and a solid oxygen barrier to prevent internal corrosion of heating system components. Gerpex pipe has low expansion characteristics, so it can be included in building designs in the same manner as copper. The flexibility of the pipe, together with the use of

24.indd 1

Gerpex press fitting, is said to enable a savings of up to 70% on installation time. Gerpex can be used in a wide range of applications including sanitary systems and heating (wall hung radiator and UFH). The pipe is fully WRAS approved and

available in a range of sizes from 16-63mm, making it suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. Gerpex Press Fittings have been developed to be used with MLCP as a clean, simple and more efficient alternative to traditional

jointing methods such as soldered copper and threaded steel fittings. Using the TH jaw profile, and partnering REMS, the system is widely available to installers. With a definite press of each fitting the system will also give greater confidence to the installer over push fittings. The brass bodied fittings with double O-rings, combined sight hole, dialectric ring and jaw alignment collar help to ensure that the pipe is fully inserted and pressed correctly, every time. An acoustics camera identifies the loudest point in pipework

example, they should not be placed next to the neighbour’s bedroom. Water flowing through pipes is often very noisy, with sounds travelling through the walls to neighbouring rooms. By reducing the amount of off-sets, however, this noise can be reduced. A 45º bend will create 9dBs, compared to just 5dBs for a 15º one. Multiplied by the numerous pipes used within a multi-floored and bathroomed building, and you have considerable sound savings. Some pipework includes integral noise reduction, including stone composite to deaden water sound as it runs through, such as Geberit’s Silent-dB20.

Style and sound Thankfully, modern bathroom trends often lend themselves to quieter bathrooms. Wall-hung sanitaryware, for example, is a much better option than back-to-wall WCs, with no noise travelling through the floor. As an example, a close-coupled WC can produce around 56dBs of sound, compared just 30dBs for a wall-hung option using a Geberit Duofix frame. In general, pre-wall acoustic de-couplers will help reduce noise, with rubber brackets that reduce solid borne sound. Next time you’re asked to help design and install a bathroom, don’t just focus on the visible elements. Sound reduction should be viewed as an integral part of a washroom scheme, ensuring undisturbed sleep, privacy for bathroom users and adding the finishing touch of quality – particularly important in high end hotels and apartments.

Push-fittings with a bit of a twist With millions of push-fit fittings used globally in a wide variety of applications, what makes one fitting better than another? Nigel Sanger, Technical Manager from JG Speedfit, offers an insight into the hidden technology that could make a real difference to performance.

A

lead was the only material simple, yet sophisiticated piece of available, but was later technolog y, t he replaced by copper following idea of the push-fit fitting the awareness of the health evolved after addressing risks posed by lead. However, the needs of the pneumatics concerns are now growing industry in the 1970s. The over the long-term risks to push-fit concept was then health posed by the use of later recognised as an flux when preparing copper aid to the plumbing and joints, as inhaling harmful heating industry thanks fumes cannot realistically to its original collectbe avoided. gripping mechanism New practice which remains the critical Health issues aside, building component of the push-fit practices have also changed today. First introduced at considerably in the last 20 the Interbuild Exhibition in Nigel Sanger, Technical years with most of the new 1987 by John Guest, plastic Manager at JG Speedfit homes being built having prepiping provides an easy and fabricated joists rather than the traditional time-saving way to conduct installation, solid wooden joists used in the past. There with less tools and the ability to establish an instant tube-coupling system within are many reasons for this – sourcing such large amounts of lumber is not ecologically minutes. In the past plumbers have had little choice sustainable and the twisting that occurs but to use the products and materials that during the drying out period also causes were available to them. For many years many issues.

Push-fit fittings can provide a reliable connection for both copper and plastic pipe

Modern push-fit fittings have beedn designed to meet the needs of a variety of applications

The use of this type of joist has prevented the old-fashioned installation methods where the plumbers had to balance on open joists and install the ‘first fix’ plumbing. The systems now need to be installed from below, meaning they need a flexible system that can be easily threaded through joists. Speed and reliability also play a factor in today’s workplace and push-fit plumbing delivers these qualities. End users are another factor in the increased popularity of push-fit fittings. No longer is it acceptable to have exposed pipes, as well as creaks and groans from metal pipework as they heat up and cool down from either hot water or heating systems. With plastic pipework, vibration noises are a thing of the past.

MORE HEAT FOR YOUR MONEY. THE THIRD GENERATION BARLO RADIATOR:

Buyer beware In today’s plumbing arena the combined use of plastic and copper pipes with pushfit fittings has become the ‘go-to’ option for many. However, installers need to be aware that not all products that boast push-fit technology are going to provide quality or reliability. Word of mouth is one way that people become aware of a good product; bad news always makes an impact. However, with so many push-fit fittings claiming to be the best, cheapest and most effective, it is important to check the quality of the manufacturer, the standards met by manufacturers (such as BSI Kitemark British standards) and the science within the fitting itself. The science behind the push-fit concept is well hidden and often not fully acknowledged. Yet, there are subtle

26.indd 1

differences between various push-fit fittings which can make a difference to ease of use and performance. For example, our JG Speedfit system provides a twist and lock multi-sealing.

Twist and lock So what makes the twist and lock mechanism stand out? There is a lot of subtle and hidden technology within our JG Speedfit fitting. Most plumbing fittings on the market have two elements to them: the ability to seal water and the ability to grip the pipe in order to prevent the fitting and the pipe parting under pressure. Our fittings also do this, but in addition, have the twist and lock element. When inserting the pipe, the fitting is placed in its open position. The pipe can then be easily inserted as the clever collet system allows for extremely low insertion forces. Once the pipe is fully home, the nut is rotated and all the internal components are clamped firmly together using the science of levers. By utilising such a design, compression around the ‘O’ ring seal is secure. Stainless steel teeth ensure that a firm grip is achieved and, with the seal in place, the installation eradicates any leakage risks. It is this that sets the twist and lock system apart from others – part push-fit, part compression fitting.

Discover the benefits of push-fit Whether it’s saving time, eliminating health and safety issues, or overcoming the limitations of working in confined spaces, push-fit fittings offer the installer many benefits – so says Bill Barlow, UK Business Unit Director for Conex Bänninger.

T

he amount of time it takes to complete a job can be the difference between running a profitable operation or not. Installers are always looking for ways to maximise their time and productivity, and push-fit fittings have been designed to do just that. Push-fit has continued to rise in popularity since it was first introduced to the market in the 1980s. Today, it is a common feature in Bill Barlow, Conex Bänninger many installers’ toolkits, often favoured over end-feed solder and brazing fittings for their ease and speed of installation. Push-fit products have the potential to bring considerable opportunities and benefits to installers, but it is up to us, as manufacturers, to inform the plumbing industry on the advantages of the technology and its ability to deliver higher profit potential.

Time saving The time saving benefits of push-fit technologies are obviously one of the most popular aspects amongst installers. As we know, solder and brazing fittings can take some time to install, with the process involving finding an appropriate location to set up the blowtorch and heat the

fitting sockets before the work can even begin. With push-fit, the process is quick and simple. Push-fit fittings are even quicker than press, and press is three times faster to complete than solder or brazing. Once cutting, measuring and deburring takes place, the actual jointing takes just seconds to finish when using a push-fit fitting.

Easy removal

insurances, which may be required where brazing and solder fittings are concerned. Being a flame-free solution also means that push-fit fittings can be applied in any environment, regardless of how tight the working space might be. Such issues may be especially pertinent when working in close proximity to electrical wiring, for example. A solder or brazing method in these conditions may simply not be feasible.

Another key benefit of push-fit, is that the fitting can be easily de-mounted if there has been an error in installation Retrofit solution or removal is required, which isn’t the case for press fitting Push-fit fittings are ideal for the repair and maintenance or where traditional methods are concerned. of existing water piping system, as opposed to traditional Importantly, if removal is required, there is no need for brazing and solder methods, which can be difficult when additional materials or new pipework. The installer need completing an effective joint whilst the system still contains only remove the existing water residue. fitting using a release tool They are also ideal for use “Push-fit fittings are ideal for the repair and replace with a new in tight spaces, which is part and maintenance of existing systems” one, providing the pipe is of their appeal. Where space not damaged. is limited, there’s a potential It is important to also be aware that ease of installation doesn’t risk that a joint may not be secure, especially if an installer stop the need for post-installation safety testing. Installers are is unable to access the pipes for solder all the way round advised to rigorously test all joints after completion, making the fitting. This could considerably affect the quality of sure they are secure, fully functional and do not leak. By taking the joint if a traditional method is employed in these the time to test the joint, installers will greatly reduce the circumstances. risk of callbacks – incurring unnecessary additional costs.

Safety issues

The time-saving and de-mounting possibilities of push-fit are clearly attractive benefits to installers, but the health, safety and practical benefits inevitably play a key part in the decision making process. As push fit is a cold application solution, installers are not required to Made from low lead corrosion-resistant have a hot works brass, the >B< Push range combines the license or pay for ease of use of plastic with the strength additional work and durability of metal fittings

Quality control

In addition to the many advantages of push-fit solutions, it is important to consider the benefits of investing in the best possible fittings on the market. A solution such as Conex Bänninger’s >B< Push range offers a strength and durability that cannot always be matched by plastic. With a compact, slimline design, our >B< Push universal fittings are popular with installers as it can be used in conjunction with an array of materials including copper, PB, PE-X and carbon steel. This offers the flexibility to connect multiple pipes, which many purely plastic pushfit solutions cannot achieve. Available in sizes 12 to 28mm, >B< Push fittings are ideal for use in retrofit plumbing systems where space is limited or when heat needs to be avoided. They are made from low lead corosion-resistant brass, with a stainless steel grab ring and a plastic collar to ensure that the tube fits correctly into the fitting’s body. So if you’re looking at reducing job time, improving job consistency and increasing profit potential, the opportunity to challenge your business boundaries has never been more readily available, with our push-fit technology at the core. www.conexbanninger.com

A key feature of this PICV is the ability to verify the flow rate by the use of a builtin measuring station. The venturi design increases the measured signal, ensuring the significant pressure loss is recovered as it passes through. Energy is therefore not needlessly expanded in pressure recovery, said to make the use of these valves highly energy efficient.

A PICV replaces the conventional control valve and static balancing valve set and eradicates the time-consuming manual balancing procedure. It works by automatically balancing a system and prevent ing over or under supply of heating or co ol i ng , ensuring each terminal receives the specified design flow rate and therefore improving the overall control accuracy. By providing this consistent supply there is minimal temperature differential, meaning there is no energy wasted and energy costs controlled. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Overboard is the name of Maincor’s retrofit underfloor heating solution, suitable for projects such as extensions, kitchen refurbishments or upgrading domestic heating systems. The pipes (12mm multilayer composite) are laid within the 18mm thick prerouted Overboard panels, offering a low profile solution which lends itself to situations where minimal floor height adjustments are desired. This is said to make the Overboard system suitable for virtually

any property desiring UFH. The system is a dry alternative to wet screed systems and is designed to be installed directly over existing

floor surfaces without the need to disturb floorboards. The panel installation is made up of dense gypsum fibre boards which allow

the heat to spread effectively across a whole area. The end returns are exactly half the size of the main panels, which means that less cutting is required. The Overboard panels also have three fixing points on each channel which makes it quicker to install the pipes. As well as the pipework and panels, the Overboard system comes with a full range of accessories including manifolds and controls. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

32 PIPES Fittings & Valves Slash installation times Pegler Yorkshire is highlighting the time saving advantages of its Tectite push-fit system, saying that it can cut installation times by up to 75% without sacrificing durability and versatility. In separate trials, Balfour Beatty and pipework company MEP Solutions compared the Tectite solution with two more traditional methods, namely threaded joint and press-fit. Using Tectite fittings, MEP’s installers were

able to create a prefabricated module containing three separate services four times faster than when using the threaded joint method. Tectite also proved twice as quick as press-fit. Balfour Beatty’s results were also positive, with the Tectite push-fit system cutting the installation of a similar module from 1 hour 17 minutes using press-fit to just one hour. www.pegleryorkshire.co.uk ENQUIRY No. 118

Products in Action 33 Water treatment helps city council A major City Council has seen a sharp fall in boiler breakdowns and boiler related problems now that it has adopted Sentinel’s SystemCare water treatment programme for more than 14,000 properties. The SystemCare schedule of chemical cleaners, corrosion and scale inhibitors, and test kits – in tandem with bespoke training – has proven a real success since it was first taken up by the local authority in 2006. “In 2006 we took the decision to review our existing heating systems,” says the Planned Programmes Manager at the Council. “A

lot of the existing systems had been poorly installed and had bad circulating water content, which meant that our boiler breakdown rates and costs were much higher than they should have been.”

As part of the review, the local authority adopted Sentinel’s SystemCare programme to help improve the quality of water in its heating systems, ensuring long term protection from

corrosion and limescale. SystemCare is a service that couples Sentinel’s products with free audit, training and support packages customised to suit requirements. By promoting water treatment best practice, SystemCare helps to deliver the dependable and efficient performance of boilers and heating system components – lowering maintenance, repair and associated labour costs. Sentinel created a bespoke solution for the City Council, headed up by Ian Brookes, the company’s South West Business Manager. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

An abandoned water tower on the outskirts of Harrogate, Yorkshire, has been converted into a family home. Sustainability and energy efficiency were at the heart of the project, so an air source heat pump from Panasonic was specified to provide a low carbon heating and hot water solution. Heacol installed two Panasonic Aquarea TCAP heat pumps with weather compensation to provide the necessary capacity for the house. Heacol also installed proportional thermostats so that when the outside temperature drops below 17°C the system will run 24 hours a day at a much lower flow temperature to provide heating and hot water much more efficiently. the company also installed a thermal store, which heats the water as it flows through a pipe rather than in a tank, which not only reduces the risk of legionella but also lowers the running costs of the system. www.aircon.panasonic.eu

On demand heaters prevent problems Rinnai ‘A’ rated continuous flow hot water heaters are keeping things flowing at the Hale Country Club and Spa in Cheshire. As well as providing an unending supply of temperaturesafe hot water for clients, the Rinnai units offer low running costs and prevent any worries about legionella. The company claims that energy savings are increased over stored water heaters because its heaters operate only on demand, which eliminates the cycle of heating and reheating the same tank of water. A continuous flow gas water heater also avoids the problem of cylinders becoming corroded and rusty, causing water to become contaminated. The problem of legionella is removed as the water temperature is accurate to ±1˚C and provides water at temperatures above the dangerous threshold for proliferation. The system also minimises standing bodies of water, as water heaters are decentralised and cited near to outlets.

The Mayfair home of Sir Stirling Moss, OBE, the British former Formula One racing driver, has been fitted with a Heat 55kW boiler from Keston Boilers. Sir Stirling has used Keston boilers for over 25 years, and when the time came to upgrade the old model he once again turned to Keston. The new boiler was installed in an outdoor boiler house and the ease of fitting meant that the boiler replacement was completed within the day. “Whenever we have needed a boiler installed, we have gone straight back to

Keston, as we have always found them easy to use and completely reliable,” says Sir Stirling. “You can’t argue with over 25 years of faultless service. Plus with six storeys to heat, our boilers always get a lot of use! If we ever had to choose another, we’d look no further than a Keston.” Keston offers twin flue technology that allows flue runs of up to 21m from the boiler. Welsh council adds CO protection Pembrokeshire County Council is installing Aico AudioLINK carbon monoxide (CO) alarms across all of its 6500 council homes in a move to provide tenants with enhanced safety. Until now CO alarms were not fitted as standard by the Council. There is no requirement for them to do so, apart from where a new or replacement fixed solid fuel appliance is installed within a dwelling. However, with greater

awareness of the dangers of CO in the home, the forward thinking Council made the decision to fit CO alarms across its entire

housing stock, regardless of whether the properties have solid fuel, gas or oil appliances fitted. The reasoning behind this was that tenants

might bring in their own appliances that the Council is not made aware of and does not service and therefore pose an added risk. Following an in-depth demonstration by Aico, Pembrokeshire County Council specified the Ei208 CO Alarm as, according to Chris Wade M&E Service Contracts Supervisor, “the alarm had everything we needed”. Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead has chosen two of Alpha’s Ares Tec 900kW boilers as part of the refurbishment of one of its customer’s boiler rooms. For this project, two sets of Ares Tec 900kW boilers along with safety kits and room sealed kits were used. The large modulation range and high efficiency give the user optimal control for a comfortable working environment. Boilers in the Ares Tec range are also compact, meaning they take up only a small footprint. For this particular customer, opting for Alpha’s room sealed kit was an important addition due to the boilers being fitted in a plant room which already contained ventilation dependant air handling equipment, rather than a dedicated boiler room. The kit also allows employees to safely work in the same environment as the boilers, pulling air for combustion from outside, rather than taking in oxygen from the room itself. www.alpha-innovation.co.uk

OIL Heating 35

Time to capitalise on falling oil prices With oil prices plunging, there has never been a better time to capitalise on this buoyant market – so says Jeremy Hawksley, Director General of OFTEC, who looks at the sector and describes a favourable future for oil technicians.

L

ast year proved a bumper year for oil, and as we progress into 2016 the picture for the oil heating industry – and Great Britain’s 1.1 million oilusing households – remains bright. The low fuel prices we have seen over the past twelve months look set to continue for some time to come and this favourable scenario has undoubtedly OFTEC’s Jeremy Hawksley fuelled the current boom in sales of new, high efficiency oil boilers which are at their highest level since 2010. For the past two years, oil has remained the cheapest major heating fuel, with typical annual costs around £793 pa – that’s 48.7% cheaper than LPG, 50% less expensive than electric storage heaters, and 24% cheaper than mains gas. The average UK selling price of kerosene at the end of last year fell to just 30.1 ppl – the lowest point since March 2007 and well over 50% cheaper than when prices peaked in spring 2013. The cost difference between heating an average three bedroom home on oil compared to mains gas, LPG and electric storage heaters has also increased over time. This is partly due to the price drop in oil being passed on to the consumer, which isn’t always the case with other heating fuels.

fuel of choice for most existing users. This is despite the introduction of government incentives such as the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, designed to encourage off grid households to switch to 100% renewable technologies. Low oil prices may also encourage some of the 171,000 households in Great Britain currently using LPG and the 2.4 million households using electric storage heaters to switch to oil as a much cheaper option. Oil also compares well with off grid competitor fuels on carbon emissions. The CO2 output of an oil condensing boiler is significantly lower than electric storage heaters (-43%) although higher than an LPG condensing boiler (+23%). However, when comparing an LPG standard efficiency boiler with a new oil condensing boiler (the most likely scenario for consumers switching fuels), then oil once again has the advantage (-6%).

Boiler sales boosted

There is plenty of work around for OFTEC technicians

will encourage far greater buy-in. This approach is urgent considering the estimated 4.5 million UK households still living in fuel poverty, meaning they spend more than the UK average on energy bills, and this expenditure pushes them below the poverty line. Additionally, there were an estimated 43,900 excess deaths in England and Wales last winter (2014/15), the highest number since 1999, and the majority of those who died were aged over 75 years. According to the World Health Organisation, some 30% of these excess deaths were due to vulnerable people living in cold homes, which they couldn’t afford to adequately heat.

Last year, sales of high efficiency condensing oil boilers were at a five year high, up 9.4% on 2014 levels. This is excellent news for manufacturers and heating installers alike, and positive feedback from OFTEC registered technicians suggests there is plenty of work around. Given the current positive market conditions, in addition to an economy which is showing solid signs of recovery, oil installers and technicians are in prime position to capitalise on the oil resurgence and expand their business. Technicians working with other Affecting change fuels may also consider adding oil to their books to boost At the end of last year, OFTEC submitted recommendations to the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee outlining their customer reach. The encouraging landscape for oil households is, however, alternative, realistic solutions to simultaneously improve Future prices energy efficiency in UK homes set against a backdrop of and reduce carbon emissions. fragmented Predicting kerosene prices is always difficult, especially with inadequate, “Oil users need realistic, viable options The 100% renewable heating current instabilities overseas. However, with world demand government policies which to help them cut energy bills” solutions currently promoted for crude oil remaining low and continued oversupply, it’s are failing to help consumers, by Government via the RHI likely that prices will stay low for the foreseeable future. particularly those off grid, This is echoed by a recent OPEC report which forecast a improve their energy efficiency and, importantly, cut carbon can, in some scenarios such as new builds, provide a workable solution and these technologies will undoubtedly slow recovery in oil prices, reaching an estimated $70 a emissions. OFTEC is fully committed to working towards a low play a role in the UK’s future heating mix. With cost remaining a key driving factor for the majority completely re-think its current strategy and replace it with a installation costs of £7000 to £19,000, and impractical for of consumers, it’s likely that oil will continue to be the joined-up energy efficiency and carbon reduction policy that the vast majority of UK households to realistically consider. Government needs to urgently change tack and focus on solutions that are simple, affordable to install and run, and impose limited disruption on the homeowner. These should include the introduction of a universal boiler scrappage scheme to encourage the estimated 600,000 plus households oil prices. With sensible fuel costs OFTEC registered technician Philip still using standard efficiency boilers to upgrade to high people can also now afford to have Shakespeare, owner of Premium efficiency, modern condensing models. 36 OIL Heating

Make the most of opportunities Falling fuel prices mean that the oil market is no longer the poor relation to natural gas. Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, explains why the future looks bright for oil and discusses the opportunities for installers.

G

iven that oil prices have fallen to around half of what they were in June 2014, the news that 2015 saw a year-on-year growth of 8-10% in sales of oil boilers will come as no surprise to those within the industry. Whereas the cost of a litre was as high as 55p just 18 months ago, the price now sits at between 30-33p per litre. In fact, crude oil dropped below $30 per barrel in January, a price not seen as low for 12 years. Not only has this ensured a steady demand for boilers among those who are located off-grid, but the latest Sutherland Associates table comparing the cost of the most common fuels across a range of standard house type places oil as the cheapest heating fuel available in its own right. This is a huge boost to the status of oil heating, which has in recent years struggled to achieve the popularity of its natural gas equivalent. Geo-political influences will always have an effect on oil prices, but there are markers indicating that prices will remain strong throughout the course of year. Taking into account Iran’s re-entry into the market, which has brought another 400,000 – 500,000 barrels of oil per day, as well as the fact that Saudi Arabia recently began to tap the global bonds market in a bid to minimise the strain caused by the falling cost of its oil, it looks likely that prices will remain low for the foreseeable future. The fact that it remains significantly cheaper to replace an old oil boiler with a new one rather than with any other solution continues to supply homeowners with the confidence that oil is the right way to go, not least when it is taken into account that a new appliance can provide anything from 15 to 30% in efficiency gains. The Government may have scaled back funding for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and scrapped such schemes as the Green

Installer feedback plays a key part in product development

Deal, but owners of older oil-fired boilers have enough reason to upgrade their heating systems, thanks simply to the competitive price of their basic fuel.

Further business Although there will always be technical challenges to tackle when installing and servicing oil boilers, this side of the market offers opportunities for installers beyond servicing current systems and fitting new boilers. For example, when oil boilers are changed, it is not uncommon to see a new tank put in as well, throwing up the potential for further business. At Worcester we’ve always been keen to gain the feedback of installers in an effort to make their day-to-day lives easier through the design of our appliances. Efficiency and space are among the key considerations we have made, leading to the development of primary heat exchangers and component layouts, rendering servicing as straightforward as possible by giving easier access to the inside of the boiler.

Similarly, installers are under increasing pressure to keep on top of training and accreditation, but consistency throughout a product range can help to alleviate some of this. Once installers have mastered a certain type of installation, it should not be too difficult for them to apply the same principles across a range of products, so manufacturers looking to enhance the design of their products can do so without a major shift away from the designs and features installers have become familiar with. The replacement of an oil boiler will quite often see the new appliance connected to an existing oil tank and line which have been in place for a number of years. With this comes the risk that the boiler is being installed in an environment whereby the oil pump could get contaminated by issues with the oil line or tank, which can have serious consequences for the operation and reliability of the boiler. Ensuring a domestic oil supply remains free from contaminants will make the most of its comparatively low fuel cost and ensure that it will be even more costeffective to run the boiler. In order to do achieve this, we would remind installers of the need to check, and if necessary replace, the oil filter(s) within a system at the point of an annual service. The favourable conditions of the oil market continue to present homeowners in off-mains gas areas with a hugely appealing alternative to gas. Not only does this give good reason for heating engineers to keep oil central to their business but what’s more, the added installation and servicing opportunities commonly brought by oil installations can ensure that this remains the case for years to come. www.worcester-bosch.co.uk

Learn about blue flame technology Since last year’s launch of its oil-fired condensing boiler with a low NOx Blue Flame burner, Firebird Heating Solutions have been running

36.indd 1

training courses across the country to introduce the new technology to heating professionals. The sessions have varied from formal

classroom training to oneon-one teaching to familiarise ser vice engineers and installers with the principles behind the Enviromax Blue Supreme boiler. OFTEC-approved training centre, Supertech of Newton Abbot, is experiencing high demand from installers and engineers in the South West for training on the new technology. The centre is currently running six weekly training courses – using the Blue Supreme boiler demonstration rig – to introduce the Blue Flame concept, covering the burner principle, flueing options, commissioning and servicing procedures. “Installers and engineers throughout the South West are keen to know about the new technology and its principles,’’ says Supertech’s Jacqui Pearman. “Word of mouth is spreading and we are getting a lot of people who are wanting to enrol on these training courses.”

Supertech is situated in a major off-gas area of the country and is celebrating its 10th anniversary in April. The centre trains around 2500 people each year and offers a wide range of courses.

Eco design The Blue Flame technology meets the exacting standards set by the recently introduced Eco Design Directive both for efficiency and low NOx emissions. Heating oil is atomised at high pressure before being mixed with prewarmed air and ignited. Hot combustion gases are then recirculated through the burner blast tube through a specially designed slot, which in turn concentrates the burner flame in one area and reduces the overall NOx levels. The result is a blue flame that produces soot free combustion along with reduced consumption of heating oil and the lowest possible emissions.

The burner also uses a digital control box to give diagnostic information to the maintenance engineer, should a fault occur, making the maintenance process simple and efficient. For the end-user the digital controls have a range of benefits which will help achieve the most out of their heating appliance, including burner run time, pump overrun and anti-cycling features. Debbie Coley, General Manager of Firebird Heating Solutions in the UK, adds: “We are happy to be leading the way forward with new technology in the

OIL Heating

The oil market is really cooking! Despite predictions to the contrary, the UK oil heating market continues to thrive. Marie Hill, Brand Manager at Rayburn, discusses why oil continues to meet the needs of rural properties and how installers can help to maximise efficiency levels.

F

or years, homeowners with oil-fired heating systems have been inundated with negative news. They were invariably told one of three things: (1) oil is a finite resource that only has a few years of supply left; (2) it costs the earth to run a domestic oil heating system; or (3) now is the time to think about alter nat ive renewable methods of heating their homes. Today, instead of the pessimism surrounding heating oil, it’s actually a fuel gaining in popularity. Demand for oil boilers is steadily continuing to rise, with the industry experiencing an all-time high in November last year. Indeed, the same trend has been encountered at Rayburn, with oil-fired central heating models increasing by almost 5% over the same period. The significant reduction in oil prices has undoubtedly had an impact on rural home o w ne r s’ de c i s ion making, but suggesting the price of oil has been the sole factor for the increased take-up ignores the wider issues. After all, the decision to upgrade a boiler is a considered purchase, and it’s one homeowners have to plan carefully.

The best option So, why are so many consumers committing to oil again? Well the first point is that, for many, there is little alternative but to stay with oil, as adding rural communities to the gas network is rarely an economical option for the utility suppliers. While considerat ion of a property’s complete migration to a renewable heating technology is often too expensive and/or impractical to contemplate, oil is still a relevant option for many households, with the latest condensing oil

boilers offering excellent efficiencies in line with legislative requirements. Now, if we acknowledge that oil heating systems are here to stay, where does the future lie for the technology and what are the best recommendations for installers to put forward for rural living?

Linked together One option is to ‘bolt on’ a renewable heating technology to an existing heating system. Rather than relying solely on one technology or the other, a renewable source could be installed in tandem, supplying an efficient hybrid system. I nt e g r at i ng d i f fe r ent systems, rather than fully converting entirely to one renewable technolog y, limits the upheaval to the homeowner while still providing a long term energy efficient system. Whether it is a heat pump, solar thermal or wood burning stove, combining a condensing oil boiler and the latest sustainable technology can prove to be a highly efficient configuration. But rather than stopping there, rural households

that have a desire to combine exceptional cooking capabilities with an efficient heating system can always opt for a central heating range cooker. With an integrated condensing oil boiler, range cookers can prove to be the perfect foundation for a sustainable and cost effective heating arrangement. Furthermore, additional savings can made by supplementing the heat load with the integration of a renewable heat source – such as a wood burning stove – which will help to boost temperatures and provide the benefit of reducing the overall oil usage. Despite the many unjust negative comments that surround domestic oil systems, there are plenty of options for installers to offer. With the oil heating industry coming off the back of a momentous year, the 1.5 million homeowners that rely on this fuel source are continuing to embrace it and committing their long term future to an efficient and cost effective approach. That, in itself, says enough about heating oil’s longevity. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

38 OIL Heating

A guide to servicing oil burners It is recommended that oil burners should be serviced every 12 months to maintain efficiency. Martin Cooke, Technical Manager at EOGB Energy Products, provides guidance on correct procedures, fault finding methods and some tips on burner replacement.

T

he age of an oil boiler is often the biggest contributing factor when problems arise. However, as long as the boiler is sound and the water jacket and/ or heat exchanger and electrical controls are still in good condition, it may be that the problems are caused by one or more of the burner components. As with all parts, burner components that operate at high temperatures such as ignition transformers and oil solenoids have a working life and can eventually fail or fail intermittently. However replacement parts are still readily available, as many burners fitted over the past twenty years or so are industry standard and have ignition transformers, oil pumps with solenoid, and photocell. When working on the appliance, the engineer often needs to weigh up the pros and cons of fixing the problem versus replacing the burner unit. For example, if the burner requires a new fan motor, fan and oil pump then you could easily be approaching the cost of a replacement burner, especially if you factor in the labour costs involved. Burner manufacturers will be able to advise on a suitable burner replacement for the boiler model, and then the engineer can make the decision on what is the best plan of action.

You don’t want to work on the burner for an hour only to discover you have no oil pressure to start with! This is also a good indication that the drive coupling between the pump and the motor is connected and not stripped out.

Identifying the fault

Always fit a pressure gauge before working on the burner

Replacing a burner Burner replacement is a relatively simple process and a retrofit burner can be a quick and efficient solution to get the boiler back up and running. An added bonus is that the engineer is also able to offer the customer a warranty from the burner manufacturer. Before replacing a burner, there are a few critical questions that must be answered: • Is t he oil supply t he f undamental problem for burner failure? If it is a gravity fed oil supply then remove the flexible hose from the oil pump on the original burner and see if you have a flow of oil at this point. This

Tanks with fire protection FireStop tanks from Tuffa Tanks are fitted with an integral fire resistant material which is able to offer either 30 or 60 minute resistance, making them suitable for both domestic and non-domestic applications. This means that the fire protected tanks can be installed next to and within non-fire resistant buildings and boundaries, and can be installed easily under a competent person scheme. The FireStop tanks are available in a range of sizes from 1350 to 15,000 litres in plastic, and up to 200,000 litres in steel. For installations where critical dimensions are a must, Tuffa can also manufacture bespoke steel Fire Protected models. The tank system has been tried and tested for more than 10 years and, as well as domestic properties, the tanks have been installed in numerous locations, including schools, prisons and hospitals.

38.indd 1

is a common fault that gets overlooked and it could just be a simple fuel filter blockage. • Do you know the model and output of the boiler? This may sound obvious, but many old boilers still in operation are devoid of essential information such as data plates. • Does the old burner have a non-standard extended blast tube? • Is the correct nozzle for the boiler’s output already fitted? • Is standard wiring used for the electrical connections? Don’t pull out wires on the old burner before checking what they do and where they go. This can turn a simple job into a problem job very quickly! • Does t he new bur ner ’s mounting flange fit the boiler? Most manufacturers offer a six bolt flange to give a few options when it comes to mounting. Don’t destroy the old one getting it off before you are certain that the new one will fit!

Fault finding

Independently tested to BS476, Tuffa says that the tanks will ensure compliance with Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and, thanks to the 60 minute fire protection, can even be installed inside for maximum security. A further benefit of the tanks is that there is no requirement for brickwork, barriers or firewalls to be erected on site, therefore avoiding any reason to delay installation and saving on additional site costs.

Tanks such as the one pictured come with a locakable hinged cover on the outer tank. A covered bund prevents the collection of rainwater and debris and provides protection from leakage and overfilling. Based in Staffordshire, Tuffa has been manufacturing tanks for 25 years. As a member of APHC, the FireStop system is available to installer members at competitive prices. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

If an engineer is new to fault find on an oil burner, a simple methodology is to follow the burner sequence of operation. The burner sequence of many common burners is: 1. Fan purge 2. Spark 3. Photo cell check for stray light 4. Power to solenoid coil 5. Fuel release ignition 6. Photo cell checking for flame 7. Preparation until thermostat is satisfied Then check if the burner is locked out or sat waiting for a signal to run. The control box neon indicator will display when a lockout has occurred but if there is no light on the control box then check the electrical supply to the burner. Most oil burners have a simple 220V AC supply down to the control box or terminal strip on the burner, so if no voltage is present then check the thermostat, overheat stat, frost stat, or time clock before undertaking any work on the burner, as the fault may be external. Before starting work always fit a pressure gauge to the oil pump as this will tell you if you have the pressure adjusted correctly.

When you press the reset, does the fan run and then the burner lock out before igniting? Remove the burner and check if the blast tube is wet with fuel. If so, then it is probably ignition transformer failure or electrode problems. Try disconnecting the photocell and firing the burner again. If the burner lights then locks out after ten seconds, replace the photocell. If the burner doesn’t ignite after disconnecting the photocell, check the solenoid coil. This could be checked with a multi-meter on ohms resistance, and if you get an open circuit then replace the solenoid. If the burner runs for a few seconds and locks out it is most likely a photocell failure. If the burner runs for a few minutes and locks out then it could be an oil pump solenoid failure. These are a few of the common oil burner failures that are relatively easy to rectify. If an engineer is new to oil, most manufacturers offer oil burner training courses that cover comm ission ing , serving and fault finding procedures.

Servicing tips It is recommended that domestic oil boilers should be serviced every 12 months. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and relevant local authority legislation regarding oil storage and ensure the following is checked or changed where necessary: • Replace nozzle • Replace braided hose (if it’s a long life hose check date on hose and replace if there is any doubt on its age) • Check external filters and replace elements if they are a disposable type • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on boiler baffle removal and cleaning of combustion chamber and condense trap if applicable • Fit pressure and vacuum gauges to ensure pressure and flow of oil to burner • Check combustion as per manufacturer guidelines, including a smoke test prior to analysing • Complete a suitable service report displaying combustion figures including, CO2, CO, O2, smoke number and flue gas temperature By following the procedures above, you should be able to make a quick and accurate assessment to get the heating system back up and running as quickly as possible. www.eogb.co.uk

OIL Heating 39

Taking advantage of an expanding market The fall in oil prices has meant that the UK market for oil-fired central heating has not only remained buoyant, but has started to regain some momentum. Anna Wakefield, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager for Grant UK, looks at how the latest in boiler technology can help installers to capitalise on that demand.

O

il-fired boilers have long proven a popular heating solution for homeowners in off-gas areas of the UK. For the majority of these homes, upgrading to a modern oil condensing boiler from a standard efficiency model is a good solution which would vastly reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions. The strength of the oil market is clear: sales of oil fired boilers continue to increase as does the demand for our oil technician product courses and OFTEC training and accreditation. Providing this support and a wealth of information to installers also results in well installed products and reliable heating, which in turn leads to increased consumer confidence and market growth. Over the past three years the price of oil has fallen by about 60%. In fact, the price of oil is now the lowest it has been for 12 years, with experts predicting the price may continue to drop even further. This dramatic reduction in the cost of oil is of course of great benefit to anyone using oil, whether it’s a homeowner or a business.

Installer feedback As demand continues, so manufacturers like Grant must continue to innovate to ensure maximum efficiencies are achieved. Often, it is installer feedback that can make the difference. This valuable source of information is regularly reviewed when developing new models, or when we are incorporating some new element into an existing appliance. For instance, following constructive comments from our G-One installer network and training academy, we made some innovative upgrades to the combi models within our Vortex range. For instance, most oil-fired combination boilers are supplied with a 12 litre expansion vessel, and it’s the installer’s responsibility to provide any additional

Feedback from installers has helped to ensure that Grant’s Vortex combi boilers are easier to install and service

expansion for the system, but the latest product updates to the Vortex Combi and Pro Combi mean that they now include a 24 litre expansion vessel, as well as a plug and socket connection for the Riello RDB burner, as standard. This upgrade to the combi models ultimately reduces installation time and cost, as in most cases a 24 litre vessel should more than cope with expansion for both the boiler and heating system and remove the need for an additional external vessel.

Easier service The plug and socket was requested by service engineers to aid the removal of the burner during annual maintenance, making the job both quicker and easier. Grant Vortex Combi models also feature internal frost protection, neon diagnostic indicators and a factory fitted internal condensate trap (which can be sited externally if preferred), all designed to make installation and servicing easier.

The large plate heat exchangers with their low water content and bigger surface area vastly increase the hot water performance available, and the factory fitted mixing valves are pre-set at 50°C, accurately controlling the hot water draw-off temperature from the boiler. They also have a low system pressure cut-off switch, enabling the combi to protect itself in the unlikely event of system water loss. Additionally, there are two very accurate electronic temperature controls which allow the boiler to operate in condensing mode on central heating, whilst maintaining its instant hot water production. Our G-One installer network also suggested decreasing the physical size of our combi to further enhance the range, so last year we launched the Vortex Pro Combi XS, which is only 515mm wide. It is designed as a replacement for older inefficient standard efficiency oil-fired combis, which tend to be smaller in dimension.

Floor-standing or on the wall The 24 litre expansion vessel included as standard with the Grant Vortex Pro oil-fired combi has been designed to provide excellent expansion capacity for both the boiler and the heating system. The Vortex Combi range includes internal and external models available in outputs of 21, 26 and 36kW. What’s more, the latest Combi XS 26kW boiler is the slimmest model of its kind on the market. The 24 litre expansion vessel is normally fitted behind the front door on indoor and outdoor Vortex Pro combi boilers, but with the XS, it is supplied as an externally fitted kit. If floor space within a property is limited, Grant also offers eight wall hung models within the Vortex range, including models

39 (WAS 40).indd 1

for internal and external installation. All models have heating outputs ranging from 12-21kW and encompass the company’s patented Vortex stainless steel heat exchanger and turbulator baffle system. Both sealed system and open-vented system variants are available. The sealed system versions include a factory fitted expansion vessel, filling loop, automatic air vent, pressure relief valve and high efficiency circulating pump. Consequently, these boilers can be installed without the need for a feed and expansion tank in the loft. Vortex internal wall hung boilers require a separate flue kit and are compatible with all Grant EZ-Fit low level, high level and vertical

flue systems. The external models come complete with a factory fitted flue, high quality external powder coated finish, built-in boiler frost protection, mains isolating switch and a test switch.

Anniversary year This year sees Grant UK celebrate its 20th anniversary and the coming 12 months will see the company introduce several additional products to its range. These will include the new VortexBlue oilfired boiler, which combines Grant’s existing condensing boiler technology with a new blue clean-burning flame, designed to ensure low NOx emissions. Other additions to the range will enable oil heating

Taking care of everyone’s needs Design considerations for bathrooms vary enormously for different people, depending on a wide range of factors including how mobile they are. James Dadd, Marketing Director at AKW, looks at how a good wetroom design can cater for a range of different requirements.

A

stag ger ing 11.4 mill ion people aged 65 or over currently live in the UK and that number is set to rocket to more than 16 million over the next 17 years. By 2040, nearly a quarter of the people in this country will be 65 or over. These escalating numbers have massive implications for bathrooms because their design needs to take account of the mobility James Dadd, Marketing Director at AKW and accessibility problems encountered by many older people (and some younger ones too – around one in five of the UK population has a health condition or disability that limits their day-to-day activities). This challenge is made all the more pressing by a longstanding rise in the number of multi-generational households in the UK, because different generations have different shower and bathroom requirements. After all, if granny and grandpa come to stay and they’re not as able and hearty as they once were, the likelihood is that the demands they make on washing facilities will differ considerably from younger people living in the same house. Since the disabled, older or less able often require particular solutions to help meet their bathing needs, inclusivity is a key consideration. Wetrooms can provide just that, making them an excellent choice for households that contain people with disparate lifestyles.

‘iShowers’, for example, include thermostatically-controlled water temperature, which helps prevent scalding, together with easy-clean rounded corners and a sensory user interface. A user or carer can operate this BEAB Careapproved shower system via a wireless remote control or smartphone app. With the ability to memorise the last user’s settings, some shower units – including our own iCare model – can also be turned on and the temperature and flow rate adjusted at the desired levels before entering the shower. The RNIB-accredited iCare also includes audible temperature and flow control indicators for the visually impaired, with built-in volume adjustment and integrated tones for different functions. The shower’s user interface has a simple layout, with LED lighting and large tactile buttons that feature raised high-contrast lettering and symbols to make controls easy to identify. But the innovation doesn’t stop there. On top of this, a ‘delayed’ mode also allows the shower to be turned off with the remote while inhibiting a manual restart at the main shower unit for two minutes.

Load bearing

So what should you, as an installer, be looking for in a wetroom former? The first consideration is load bearing. A former with a load capacity of up to 25 stone should be fine for typical wetroom installations. However, some formers are designed with capacities of up to 40 stone to cater for the user plus, if required, a wheelchair and carer, as well as to take the point loading for a shower seat. On trend Slip-resistant formers are also an option that contributes to Of course, this isn’t the only reason wetrooms are growing a safer environment for both users and carers. in popularity. Special NEeds Bathrooms

Better bathrooms for those with dementia With the number of people with dementia on the increase, Sue James, Business Development Manager for Redring Xpelair Group, looks at how to ensure that the bathroom products you install will meet the needs of householders living with the condition.

D

ementia is said to affect more than 800,000 people in the UK, with 20% of people over 80 currently living with the condition. In the coming years, the number of people diagnosed is set to increase to over 1 million, with over 160,000 new cases of dementia developing each year in England and Wales. This increase is an inevitable consequence of Britain’s ageing population and improved diagnostic capabilities within the health sector. More BEAB Care and RNIB approved, Selectronic Premier features large, than ever, focus is being easy-to-press buttons, an LED placed on how properties display and audible feedback, and can be adapted to help data logging technology people continue living independently with the condition in their own home. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important that installers are able to provide the best advice on appropriate products for customers looking to refurbish their bathroom for dementia sufferers, whether for themselves or a loved one. The more knowledge an installer holds about the layout of a dementia-friendly bathroom and the most suitable fixtures and fittings, the more likelihood there is that they will win the trust of the customer to carry out the job and provide a better quality service.

What to consider Any dementia-friendly environment should be designed to prolong an individual’s ability to live independently and to carry out personal care routines. However, as dementia is a degenerative condition, supported care for those living with dementia will often be required over time. As a person’s dementia progresses, they are likely to need more help with everyday activities such as washing and bathing. With this in mind, a key component of adapting homes for those living with dementia is the layout and functionality of the bathroom. With floors that are easy to slip on, trip hazards, hot water and sometimes a degree of fear amongst dementia sufferers about washing and showering, it’s important that bathrooms are as safe as possible. A primary concern for those living with dementia is falling, as recent studies have found that dementia sufferers are twice as likely to fall than others in their age group. With this in mind, the removal of the bath is essential for reducing trip hazards and allowing level access. It’s also important that a shower seat is installed to reduce the possibility of a fall whilst showering. Tiled safety flooring is another recommendation, but the use of non-slip mats can also be effective, especially in wet areas adjacent to showers and basins. Hand railings are also a must to help prevent falls, especially within the washing area. Sharp edges should be avoided, as however slip-proof the bathroom may be, there is always a risk that an individual living with dementia will have a fall at some stage. It is worth considering underfloor heating, if budget allows, as this means there are no radiators present to fall against. If the individual does slip whilst showering, choosing shower curtains made from a breathable fabric will avoid any danger of breathing restriction if they were to become entangled in the material.

Clever bathroom solutions for all The ‘Twyford All’ washbasin and vanity unit include special features to make access easier and more comfortable for everyone, regardless of their age or level of ability. The washbasins are available in three sizes (550, 600 and 750mm) with either a semi-pedestal or vanity unit. Said to combine elegance with practicality, they feature a shallow design and integrated finger grooves on each side, making washing easier, particularly for anyone who needs to be seated, or needs to be able to hold on to the basin for additional support. There is also a handy shelf space for everyday toiletries. Vanity units are available to fit the 600mm and 750mm basins. The larger unit has the option of innovative cut-

The Redring Selectronic Premier range of thermostatic care showers is ‘A’ rated for energy efficiency and has been trusted by care professionals for over 25 years

Visual confusion is another key issue for those living with dementia, as a layout that is not intuitive or uniform in terms of colour can trigger episodes of disorientation or panic. Therefore the shower curtain and shower seat should be different colours, with the toilet seat also being a different colour to the wall behind it. A different approach should be taken with regards to the bathroom flooring, as a single colour can help the householder to feel confident when moving around the room. However, it is important to make sure the flooring is not too dark, as it can be mistaken as a hole and means that the individual could be reluctant to enter the bathroom at all. Avoiding flecked or patterned flooring is also advisable, as it can be wrongly perceived as dirty which can lead to confusion, whilst shiny flooring can be misinterpreted as being wet.

Shower choice In terms of specific bathroom fittings, there are a number of key features to look out for. Taking showers as an example, fully thermostatic operation is an absolute must. Ideally, the water temperature should never fluctuate by more than +/-0.5°C to avoid the risk of scalding and prevent the user becoming unsettled by changes in the water temperature. Without such accurate and constant temperature control, a rise could go unnoticed due to a lack of nerve sensitivity. Our Selectronic Premier has this capability, plus a maximum temperature lock feature which can be set at 40°, 41° or 43°C, meaning an accidental temperature increase is impossible. A built-in data logger is also a valuable feature, especially if the householder is washing independently. This functionality allows shower usage, water temperature and the operating parameters of the unit to be recorded, enabling carers to monitor showering habits. This is particularly useful for bathrooms used by dementia patients who can resist washing on a regular basis. An automatic shutdown function is highly desirable too. This will turn the shower unit off if it’s left running for more than 30 minutes, helping to prevent water and energy wastage if a resident accidentally leaves the shower on. In terms of practicalities when washing, an extended shower hose is imperative, as people living with dementia can be unnerved by water flow above their head. A longer shower hose provides them with plenty of flexibility to wash themselves and allows carers to wash thoroughly without having to impede the patient’s movement, which can also trigger feelings of panic. A strong chrome rail is also advisable, as it prevents potential damage to the unit if a fall or a violent episode occurs.

Providing advice With the number of those living with dementia on the rise and set to continue on an upward trajectory, an installer’s knowledge of an appropriately designed bathroom with the ideal shower is of utmost importance, not only to provide the best possible advice but to also secure the business opportunity. www.redring.co.uk

How to fit the perfect wetroom A mutli-purpose wetroom can provide both a level access showering solution and an attractive space for multi-generational families. John Blackburn, UK Managing Director at Impey, offers some advice on how to install a leak-free and reliable wetroom solution.

T

he well-documented rise of the UK’s ageing population, coupled with an increased level of care in the community, has created a need for inclusive and attractive residential wetrooms – bathroom designs that can create an area which incorporates a level access showering solution with a modern and attractive space for multi-generational families. It’s important, therefore, for installers to understand the many showering options available for a modern-day residential wetroom. A wetroom has many functional benefits, which marry perfectly with the contemporary trend for spacious, minimalist shower room design. A wetroom is essentially a waterproofed open showering area with a level access floor and built in drainage. The addition of grab rails and attractive shower seating options can transform a modern family space into a multi-use showering facility, ideal for the elderly or disabled. For the installer, a wetroom should be quick and easy to fit, leak-free and reliable. Essentially, it can be fitted in just a few simple steps and provide a huge difference in quality of life for its users. Recent developments of increasingly effective wetroom products including floor formers and tanking solutions mean that a wetroom can be installed anywhere in the home – not just on the ground floor. Loft or attic conversions are popular, as are ensuite wetrooms. Once a location has been established, product choice is very important.

Floor formers The best type of floor former for the job is determined by the location of the installation. For installation onto a concrete floor, a screed template, which offers a quick and easy way to create a drainage gradient for new-pour solid floors, is an ideal option. Our AquaGrade system, for example, is an easy-to-use click-together matrix which is supplied with a drain and is available in both square and linear versions. For use in upper floors or attic conversions, the preferred option would be a prefabricated floor former, which is lightweight but also offers strength and rigidity. One option would be the AquaDec EasyFit – an adaptable floor former which has a built-in drainage gradient and a rotating drain plate, meaning it is easy to avoid joists or existing pipework without the need for under-boarding.

Finishing touches

Waterproofing When installed well, a wetroom can offer many years of maintenance free showering. The key to achieving this is to create a highly effective watertight barrier on both the floor and walls, to guard against any leaks. Our WaterGuard tanking membrane (pictured, right) is a butyl rubber coated self-adhesive tanking product, which is provided on a roll – offering easy application and handling. The polypropylene surface is an ideal key for tile adhesive and with no curing time needed, tiling can commence as soon as the product is laid. It is important for a tanking membrane to be highly elastic, resistant to ageing and having good load-bearing capabilities, to offer protection against heavy wall tiles.

Underfloor Heating To add a touch of luxury and to ensure that the floor is being thoroughly dried between each usage, it is an option to install underfloor heating to the wetroom. Underfloor heating allows the heat to rise, slowly distributing around the rest of the room and heating a larger surface area from the floor upwards at a lower temperature – resulting in a consistent temperature and economical running costs. It is important to choose a product that has suitability for the floor surface of the wetroom and is available in flexible multiple lengths to make fitting easier. Our AquaMat underfloor heating system comes in 100W and 150W versions, and at only 3mm thick, with a self-adhesive mesh backing, it’s ideal for wetroom situations.

Maintaining stable water temperature Shower specialist Triton is backing an initiative by the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) to clarify the definition of thermostatic temperature control for electric showers. The BMA defines a thermostatic electric shower as ‘an appliance which heats water on demand whilst the water is passing through it, which compensates for variations in the pressure and/or temperature of the incoming water supplies to maintain a selected blend temperature’. The Nuneaton based shower manufacturer points out that this contrasts with the numerous thermostatic electric showers available on

44.indd 1

the market which can only compensate for fluctuations in the outgoing water supply. “This, of course, limits just how effective the shower may prove to be when it comes to delivering the comfort and safety its user requires,” says Steve Saunders, Senior Technical Manager at Triton. “Given the rise in inclusive bathroom solutions, it is vital that safety is put at the heart of product development, and this is something we’ve taken very seriously with our own range of thermostatic electric showers. The standard may not be mandatory, but it certainly provides a solid roadmap for

The final stage in the wetroom installation process creates the aesthetic appeal of the room. There are a variety of drainage grate options to choose from. Depending on the configuration of the floor former drainage gradient, the grate may be a standard square size or a contemporary linear version. Once tiling has been chosen and completed, accessories can be added. To ensure the creation of a multi-functional space, which has suitability for all occasions, additions like grab rails are important. Our polished stainless steel hand rails can be strategically positioned to accommodate the requirements of someone who may need support getting in and out of the showering space. A modern shower seat like the Slimfold shower bench, which has a weight limit of 300kg (over 47 stone) can create an effective and comfortable seating option and be easily folded away when not in use. If a glass screen is going to be used within the wetroom, using thick toughened safety glass ensures that it will be safe and secure. Offering the choice of clear or modesty glass can be an important option also. The AquaScreen X is an ideal choice as its thick 10mm width can be used in single or multi-panel configurations.

Looking at all the options, it is possible to create a highly functional and effective showering environment to suit the needs of the whole family. Thinking about adaptability and understanding fitting options will offer installers the ability to capitalise on the rising trend for multi-generational and multi-purpose wetrooms in private residences. Shower toilet SOS When a brainstem stroke left a former policeman incapacitated, Geberit pitched in with the BBC DIY SOS team to deliver a shower toilet to help improve life for him. Richard Ford, a father of three from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire had been forced to use a commode and to wash in the children’s playroom, which has become a makeshift bedroom, often in full sight of his family and with little privacy. Geberit supplied the AquaClean 8000plus Care shower toilet for installation in the new ground floor wetroom, which will help Richard enjoy a greater sense of independence, privacy and

dignity when going to the toilet and washing. Commenting after the show was aired, Richard said: “The AquaClean shower toilet is so life enhancing, it has brought back an immense level of dignity and independence to me that I once took for granted.” The AquaClean 8000plus combines the convenience of a warm water wash and a warm air-dryer to leave the user feeling fresh and clean. The extending spray arm of the WC washes with a gentle, oscillating or pulsating jet of warm water, before gently drying with a flow of warm air. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

46 STOVES & BIOMASS Systems

The growing appeal of pellet appliances The last few years have seen an increasing number of oil and gas heating installers looking to offer biomass as part of their portfolio of services. Mike Harvey, HETAS Training and Technical Support Manager, looks at the growing popularity of pellet stoves for domestic installations and the importance of maintaining quality standards.

D

omestic heating installers and homeowners are faced with a wide variety of options when considering ways in which to meet the requirements of providing space heating and domestic hot water. Innovative manufacturing and advances in technology have given rise to appliances being developed in consideration for efficiency and sustainability, the diversity in appliance design facilitating the use Mike Harvey from HETAS of various fuels. When considering biomass appliances it is evident that the popularity of installations has been generally driven by the incentives available and that such installations have been considered in the main appropriate for the larger dwelling or as a commercial enterprise. The uncertainty about the RHI has thankfully now been addressed in the outcome of the recent Spending Review and is recognised as a key incentive by the Government who announced their continuing support for the RHI scheme until 2021. Pellet stoves are becoming increasingly popular as a result of the ‘green agenda’ and the general awareness surrounding sustainability. The ease of use and controllability, some including remote GMS (smart) technology and touch screen programming, together with the aesthetic look of the appliances on offer, has provided an opportunity for

installers to advise potential customers about an alternative to more traditional installations.

New skills During 2015 HETAS attended various industry events where a wide variety of topics were discussed with stakeholders from all areas of the industry. At these events, we received many enquiries about training and upskilling – a positive message given the concerns about the skills shortage within the industry, demonstrating a general willingness by installers to upskill. A large proportion of installers approaching us at the events from a gas or oil background were unaware of the technology incorporated within biomass pellet appliances, the simplicity of installation and ultimately ease of customer use. A question asked on a number of occasions by installers during the events was: “Can an existing gas or oil boiler in a smaller dwelling, i.e. a bungalow or your average two or three bedroomed property, be replaced with a biomass appliance?” The answer is, yes, of course! – although the pipework and cylinder will undoubtedly require upgrading or replacing to incorporate the requirements of system design, and it is imperative that flues and chimneys are installed correctly. That is a requirement with all heating systems irrespective of the type of fuel.

Fuel quality When considering the fuel supply, fuel quality is of upmost importance. All HETAS accredited fuels have undergone certification in accordance with the relevant standard, providing consumer confidence that the fuels being burnt are both safe and efficient for the type of appliance they have.

For use in private households, many appliance instructions will recommend using ENplus A1 certified pellets. ENplus started in Germany in 2010 and now incorporates pellet producers from 28 countries all over the world, with HETAS being the certification body for the UK. The ENplus scheme ensures there is a chain of custody from the producer, through the trader, to the end user. Producers and traders are subject to independent audits and samples are routinely tested to ensure compliance. At HETAS we have also developed Woodsure Plus, a fuel quality scheme with the aim of providing a simplified framework that a fuel producer can follow and demonstrate compliance with standards. The scheme covers all the various forms of woody biomass fuels – firewood logs, woodchip, wood pellets, wood briquettes – and visitors to our website will be able to search for local and national suppliers that have been certified under the scheme.

Carbon neutral Heating with wood pellets does not contribute to climate change. Wood pellets are regarded as a carbon neutral energy source. When pellets are burnt they release solar energy absorbed during the trees’ growth. The CO2 released in this process is equal to the CO2 absorbed during the trees’ growth. In addition, localised production of wood pellets dramatically reduces transport related emissions. Wood pellets not only save energy in terms of manufacturing and delivery, but also create local employment opportunities. They are an important contribution to a sustainable future for our children. www.hetas.co.uk

RF control NOW with Vitodens 100/050-W combi boilers at no extra cost

STOVES & BIOMASS Control for stoves gets smart The QW2 from Teddington is a smart control for a solid fuel stove, burning wood, multi-fuel or coal. It comprises two parts – a hand held remote control unit and an airflow control which moderates the primary (possibly secondary/tertiary) air supply into the stove. The remote control allows the homeowner to boost the volume of air going into the stove on initial startup. This is said to speed up the ignition process, bringing the stove up to its optimal temperature faster, reducing the time

when the fire produces most emissions. When the stove is up to temperature, the booster fan switches off and the primary air control takes over, moderating the airflow to the fire. The room temperature can be set on the remote

control and the temperature maintained until the fuel needs replacing. The QW2 monitors the gas flue temperature to ensure that the stove is operating at its highest efficiency. There is the option to add O2, CO or CO2 sensing so that the combustion can be monitored, introducing more secondary/tertiary air if there is an incomplete combustion taking place Teddington also says the QW2 is a simple, quick way to meet the requirements of Eco Design. or many years wood pellet biomass boilers have been a mainstream heating appliance in mainland Europe and, with the help of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), wood pellet boilers have now become a popular option to heating UK homes. Consumers are becoming more informed of the various options that are open to them as well as the environmental and economic advantages of installing a Charlie Lamb, Sales Director renewable energy system such as a wood pellet boiler. It is essential that installers keep abreast of the latest technology and incentives to be able to promote them to their customers and to stay ahead of the game in an increasingly competitive market.

A new family of heating controls has been launched by Worcester. Comprising two wired heating controls as well as a solar module, they are said to combine premium efficiency and a sophisticated design. The new range replaces Worcester’s series of FX controls and makes use of a number of energy saving features that will enable installers to enhance the heating efficiency of a property and help monitor its energy consumption. The controls can be either wallmounted or fixed to the boiler fascia, and installers can use existing room thermostat wires to fit them. The Greenstar Sense I is compatible with Worcester’s MT10 mechanical timer or any external programmer and provides the option of a single set point room thermostat for those wanting a simpler way to control their heating. Thanks to built-in load

compensation, the Greenstar Sense I falls under ErP class V classification when used with a compatible Greenstar gas fired boiler – producing the benefit of a 3% efficiency uplift. The Greenstar Sense II weather compensation controller (pictured) boasts an attractive back-lit and touch sensitive display and provides an energy efficiency uplift of up to 4%. Users will also be able to access key information about gas and electricity consumption from the control. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Easy access to clear drainage blockages

5 SharkBite kits up for grabs!

Designed to help ease maintenance and clear blockages, Saint-Gobain PAM UK has introduced an access pipe as part of its Cyclone steel rainwater systems range. The access pipe is a 340mm long steel downpipe with large diameter access point that can be installed into any new or existing Cyclone steel system. Available in all of the colours in the Cyclone range, the new access pipe will enable homeowners to save maintenance time and costs by allowing easy entry into the drainage system in order to clear blockages that might occur such as a build up of leaves over time. The Cyclone steel rainwater system has a contemporary look and feel and is available in a variety of colours. It is said to be cost competitive with higher value plastic systems, takes no longer to install and with its tough and hardwearing nature will last decades with minimal maintenance.

We’ve teamed up with Reliance Worldwide Corporation (UK) to offer PHAM News readers the chance to win a SharkBite Contractor Kit – worth £200 – containing a selection of the brand’s innovative fittings and accessories

SharkBite Providing a modern alternative to traditional plumbing and heating techniques, SharkBite is twice as fast to install than press fittings, three times faster to install than compression fittings and four times faster than end-feed fittings. In addition to saving valuable time for installers, SharkBite is the only fittings range on the market compatible with five different types of pipe, making installation in any combination as easy as cut-push-done.

Technical Tips RAINWATER SYSTEMS Choosing the correct rainwater system for a property and installing it correctly can help to prevent significant problems and costs further down the line. Neil Carter, Technical Services Manager at Marley Plumbing and Drainage, explains what to look out for. How do you choose the correct sized rainwater system for a roof? There are four factors that need to be taken into consideration when assessing which rainwater system is most suitable for a project: the effective roof area to be drained, rainfall intensity, the flow characteristics of the gutter system, and the number and position of downpipes. The effective roof area can be determined by calculations in accordance with BS EN 12056-3: Roof drainage layout and the Building Regulations 2002 Approved Document H, Part H3. It is important to note that for flat roofs, the roof area should be regarded as the total plan area. What’s more, if the pitched roof is complex, if it has different pitches or spans for example, then each part should be calculated separately. When it comes to rainfall intensity, information on the UK’s rainfall by geographical location and frequency occurrence can be found in the Building Regulations 2002 Approved Document H and BS EN 12056-3:2000. Once the rainfall intensity has been determined, it is critical that the flow capacity is taken into consideration. The capacity of each system on the market varies depending on profile, size and whether the gutter is fitted level or to a fall. For design purposes, eaves gutters are normally sized to ensure the calculated run-off does not exceed 90% of the gutter capacity. It is also recommended that gutters are fixed level as this enables the gutter to be fitted as high as possible to ensure the correct relationship is maintained at the roof edge. The number of downpipes can be calculated using the tables from BS EN 12056. When replacing a system, the position of the downpipes will be determined by the existing drain connections. Are there any installation issues I need to be aware of? Depending on rainfall intensity, the type of roof surface and the pitch of the roof, the spread of water as it leaves the roof edge can vary considerably. As such, in accordance with BS EN 12056-3, it is recommended that eaves gutters should be fitted in such a position that they intercept

the flow at the roof edge and that gutters are fitted centrally under the roof tile and close beneath it. Gutters can be either installed level or with a nominated gradient of 1:600. If gutters are fitted to a fall, it is essential that care is taken to ensure the top of the gutter does not fall below the roof tile to such an extent that the water will pass over the front edge of the gutter. It is also important that the eaves course of the tile or slate should not project too far over the fascia board. A maximum of 50mm is recommended for 112-115mm nominal size gutters. What about expansion and contraction? Changes in temperature cause the gutters to expand and contract, and if not fitted correctly the gutter may ‘walk’ out of the fitting. This is why it is essential to fit the gutter to the insertion line on the fitting. Notch jointing is an effective way of controlling expansion and contraction. Marley fittings, for example, have an integrally-moulded easyclip which can be adapted for notch jointing. When using this method, there is also no need to anchor fittings to the fascia. This method is ideal to anchor the last joint of a gutter run which ends with a stopend. What maintenance is required for gutters and rainwater downpipes? If a rainwater system is manufactured from PVCu, they will be corrosion resistant and self-coloured and therefore won’t require painting. However, if cleaning is required, it is recommended that the plastic is washed down with a solution of soapy warm water. To ensure optimum performance of the rainwater system, it is critical that the system is cleared of fallen leaves and other debris at least once a year. More frequent inspections may be necessary in areas where there are a lot of trees in the vicinity. Indeed, it is important that the correct sized rainwater system is installed correctly in order for the system to work optimally. Ultimately, this will save time spent on site and will also mean that the system should not need replacing for a long time. Handy packs offer easy controls solution Digital showers A variety of Heating and Efficiency Packs have been created by Danfoss to give installers a simple and costeffective controls solution contained in one handy pack. Available in a choice of eight product configurations, the packs contain TRVs and a room thermostat, specially selected from the Danfoss range to suit different applications and budgets. The room thermostats in the packs range from hard-wired or wireless, dial or dig ital, room

thermostats from the RET range, to the TP5000Si, a fully programmable room

thermostat offering up to six time and temperature changes per day.

Purchasing these products separately could cost over 40% more, making the packs value-for-money. In addition to being a more economical way to buy Danfoss controls, they offer installers the convenience of buying a single pack off the shelf. The six TRVs in each Pack feature a ‘flow selectable’ valve body. This can be installed horizontally or vertically, in flow or return, to solve the problem of water hammer. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.
