Government energy-saving grant set to boost work for installers Households in England will be able to receive up to £˚˙̇˙˙˙ in vouchers to help with energy-saving home improvements under the government’s Green Homes Grant scheme In what should be a welcome boost to the heating industry, the Treasury has announced a £˜bn ‘green investment’ package to help households in England to reduce their energy bills and public buildings, such as schools and hospitals, to reduce their carbon emissions. At the time of going to press details were yet to be unveiled, but it is thought that thousands of households will be able to access vouchers worth up to £˞˙˙˙ for energy-saving home improvements, while the poorest

could receive up to £˚˙̇˙˙˙ towards costs. The funds are likely to support work such as cavity wall insulation and the installation of double glazing, but could also go towards the cost of low-carbon heating systems. The Treasury says that the scheme, which is set to launch in September, could help to generate more than ˚˙˙̇˙˙˙ jobs and will pay for at least two-thirds of the cost of any home improvements that save energy. The funding has been set aside to be spent in one financial year and it is claimed that

about half of it will go to low income households. Business Secretary Alok Sharma told BBC Breakfast that the scheme will help to create thousands of jobs and provide business for existing skilled workers as the UK recovers from the economic shock of coronavirus. Once the scheme has been launched, interested homeowners will be able to view recommended energy efficiency measures online, along with details of accredited local suppliers. Vouchers will be issued once one of these suppliers has provided a quote and the work approved. Ben Dyer, CEO and co-founder of Powered Now – a back-office solution for tradespeople – was among the first to welcome the government announcement: “At a time like this, tradespeople need as much support as possible, and by kick-starting home improvements, this is almost certainly set to help. Homeowners need the incentive to

The CIPHE is expecting a surge in demand for training, but while the majority of providers offer quality courses and industry recognised qualifications, there are a number of rogue trainers who will be promoting a dream of easyto-complete training and high earning careers. These courses will often promise qualifications in weeks, or months, claiming to condense quality learning into small timeframes. Some may offer home study courses that

fit around the learner’s current commitments, and others claim to have contractors willing to provide workplace experience. Kevin Wellman, CEO of the CIPHE, comments: “Unfortunately we have already seen a rise in calls to the Institute regarding rogue training providers and rogue training courses. People are unwittingly parting with thousands of pounds, believing they will be equipped with the skills and experience to enter a new trade. As we in the industry know, engineers require practical skills, which take years to develop through repetition and on-site

Far enough? While the announcement of the scheme has received broad support, opposition parties have pointed to the fact that there is little or no support for renters in the private and social housing sector, many of whom live in properties with some of the worst energy efficiency standards. Also, while the £˜bn figure is more than many people expected, it is only a fraction of the £ˢ̍˛bn pledged by the Conservatives in its manifesto to improve the energy efficiency of low income housing and public buildings.

CIPHE welcomes its new president Melville Gumbs EngTech MCIPHE RP has been elected as national president of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) at the Institute’s first-ever online Annual General Meeting (AGM). Held via Zoom in June, the virtual AGM united CIPHE members from around the globe – from the UK to Hong Kong. Dr Henry Hung EngTech HON FCIPHE RP was also elected as vice president. While the beginning of Mel’s year will be steeped in challenges caused by COVID-˚ˢ, Mel says he still has big aspirations for his presidential role and sees the year ahead full of change as well as opportunity. Summing it up in his inaugural speech he said:

Boiler repairs up despite lockdown restrictions

As a result of the pandemic, Mostra Convegno Expocomfort ˛˙˛˙ and the Biomass Innovation Expo, which were both originally rescheduled for September this year, will now take place instead from the ˡ to ˚˚ March ˛˙˛˛ at Fiera Milano. To keep up to date with the latest news and events, use the hashtag #MCEMoveOnTogether on Facebook and Twitter.

Calls for boiler repairs across the UK were up by over a quarter during the strictest period of the national coronavirus lockdown, according to new enquiry data from Boiler Guide. The data looked at the period between the start of the lockdown (˛˜ March) and the easing of restrictions on ˚˚ May and found that calls from homeowners and landlords were up by ˛˟% compared to ˛˙˚ˢ. This, despite the unseasonably warm weather and social distancing measures in place during this six week period. The research was part of a review into how COVID-˚ˢ has impacted the heating engineering sector over the past few weeks, comparing the seven day average of enquiries throughout the lockdown period and for ŶĞā ŭÖĿā ùÖŶāŭ ķÖŭŶ ƘāÖũ̍ ¦Ğāũā ƒāũā Öķŭŋ łŋŶĢóāÖðķā ŭťĢĴāŭ ĕŋũ ŭťāóĢƩó ŭāũƑĢóāŭ Ŷŋ Ğāķť ĞŋĿāŭ ðāóŋĿā Ŀŋũā āłāũėƘ āƧóĢāłŶ̇ ƒĢŶĞ āłŨŽĢũĢāŭ for new gas boilers up ˛ˡ% in addition to enquiries for replacement windows being up ˞˙%. These results indicate how successful installers were in adapting their working practices during the lockdown to ensure customers were comfortable in welcoming workers into their home.

Changes are here to stay A survey of approved plumbers by the Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has shown how they see the COVID-˚ˢ pandemic impacting the industry in the long term. Two thirds (68%) said things will change forever after the pandemic ends, with over half (59%) saying they expect social distancing and more stringent hygiene practices to continue ĢłùāƩłĢŶāķƘ̍ The pandemic has also made plumbers reconsider working practices. While ˚˞% think they may have to increase how much they charge after lockdown, some said they could cut fees instead to drive much-łāāùāù ðŽŭĢłāŭŭ̵̍ Other ways plumbers see things changing after lockdown include a greater use of social media (˚ˠ%) and better marketing (˚˛%). Round the bend With reference to the article ‘Multiple benefits of multi-layer’ in the May/June issue: This article started me thinking. Is progress reducing standards? When I started plumbing back in 1 , we were still wiping joints, and the great new invention of the day was the Multikwik pan connector. I even remember the grand launch of the Nibco end-feed fitting with its little wire brush to clean inside the fittings (guaranteed to rip the solder ring out of a orkshire fitting ). Now, I am the first to acknowledge that joint wiping is no great loss. Indeed, the use of plumbers’ solder on drinking water is illegal today. Furthermore, one must recognise the likes of plastic pipe, push-fit and press fittings along with many other innovations are the way forward. However, there is a side issue in that general domestic plumbing is now so easy that everybody thinks they are a plumber. I did a five-year apprenticeship and sat both practical and theory exams in Craft and Advanced Craft City & Guilds. I also had to attend one evening a week at college in my own time. Today, one can become a plumber in a matter of months. I looked at the website of one training provider and it stated, and I quote verbatim: ‘Regardless of whether you have underpinning plumbing qualifications or not, it is feasible for you to achieve a NVQ which is a requirement for many work sites in the UK . Now, to me that is outrageous What is even worse is that other trades are starting to class themselves as plumbers. Look in any local paper and you will see advertisements for electrician plumbers, carpenter plumbers and tradespeople offering to provide all your building and plumbing needs’ – the list goes on. What brought all this into focus for me was a recent visit to a friend s house. We were having coffee in his garden, maintaining the appropriate social distance, when I noticed his next-door neighbour was having an extension built and it turned out the carpenter was doing all the plumbing. With a bit of repositioning and the use of zoom on my phone, I could see that all the pipework was laid on the concrete oversite with the odd nail clip holding it down. There was no structure to the pipework and it ran in all directions. Hot pipes ran directly over (in contact with) cold pipes (illegal) and there was nothing done to accommodate any expansion. The condense came out through the wall into the drain with no insulation or heat tracing. He had also done the gas. I doubt he has a gas ticket, but I don’t know for certain he doesn’t. The only protection afforded the gas was insulation tape wrapped around it Last of all, there was pipe going through the external wall for what appeared to be a hose tap. As the pipe was clipped ush to the inside of the wall it was clearly going to be behind the dry lining, yet there was no control valve and no double check valve, which is a legal requirement for all new installations. They will have real problems if the tap free es and splits because they will have to turn off the supply to the whole house So, going back to the start of the letter, we now have pipe that can be bent without the need for a bender. I accept it may be progress, but is it also another nail in the coffin of the time-served professional plumber? Rob Chambers Weston-super-Mare

Point of View

On the right course As the UK prepares to transition to low carbon heating systems, Martyn Bridges from Worcester Bosch looks at how the industry can ensure that installers have access to the best training courses.

T

he heating industry seems to be all on board with the UK’s decarbonisation targets. Even with recent events, industry bodies are keeping these goals front of mind by calling on government to ensure that the UK has a ‘green recovery’ to the COVID-˚ˢ crisis. There has been some disagreement about the merits ŋĕ ùĢƦāũāłŶ ŶāóĞłŋķŋėĢāŭ̇ ðŽŶ one thing that those within the industry and those in government can all agree on is that any heating source, be it a variation of heat pump or a condensing boiler, ƒŋŽķù ðāłāƩŶ ĕũŋĿ Öł āłāũėƘ āƧóĢāłóƘ ťāũŭťāóŶĢƑā Ģĕ ĢŶ Ģŭ running at low temperatures. This has led the industry to believe that training must be focused on lowcarbon heating design. The plan is to develop a course for heating engineers on how to design and size a heating system Ŷŋ ũŽł ŋƦ ķŋƒ ŶāĿťāũÖŶŽũāŭ̍ ¦ĞĢŭ

into account the U values of certain elements such as walls, ƒĢłùŋƒŭ̇ ƪŋŋũŭ̇ ÖĢũ óĞÖłėā ũÖŶāŭ of these said rooms, and how the installer could then size radiators Öłù ťĢťāƒŋũĴ ŋũ Žłùāũƪŋŋũ heating to operate at these lower temperatures.

Existing properties

Martyn Bridges Director of technical communication and project management at Worcester Bosch will help installers to refresh their memory, or to educate them if they’ve never had to do it before. The training should be impartial, agnostic of technology. It will show how to accurately measure the heat loss of the rooms, taking

Now, of course this is very suitable for homes where the home is perhaps brand new and the entire heating system is going in, or for a quite extensive renovation where an existing home is having Ö łāƒ ĞāÖŶĢłė ŭƘŭŶāĿ ƩŶŶāù Ģł ĢŶŭ entirety. However, quite often it is the case that the existing heating system remains in place, it’s just the boiler that’s changed. Regardless, this training will at least equip the installer with the skills needed to ascertain whether the existing heating system is capable of running on lower temperatures or not. It may well be that it is not, in which case the

boiler might be the most suitable replacement technology. In some situations, the decision won’t be so straightforward. This is where the training will come in handy. For example, perhaps the radiators were sized 30 or 40 years ago and they’re very clean and in good condition, yet the house has received a number of improvements to the insulation. The radiators may be far larger than they are needed to be and can therefore operate ŨŽĢŶā ŭŽóóāŭŭĕŽķķƘ ŋł Ö ķŋƒ ƪŋƒ temperature.

How it will work We have seen the importance of digital learning in recent months. With this in mind, there is an app being created, which will have all the elements on it and tools required to undertake elements of the training, but perhaps more importantly to undertake the actual task on site. Hypothetically, the installer will undertake this course as part of their core competence training. The next step would then be to take a training course or ŨŽÖķĢƩóÖŶĢŋł ŋł ŶĞā ĞāÖŶ ŭŋŽũóā̍ What is great is that the installer will go into that course equipped with the skills already to know how to size a low temperature heating system to suit that technology.

When you think about it, it isn’t too dissimilar to current gas training. If you are working on gas, you have to take the ðÖŭĢó ėÖŭ ŭÖĕāŶƘ ŨŽÖķĢƩóÖŶĢŋłŭ and then one of a number of ŨŽÖķĢƩóÖŶĢŋłŭ ŋł ŶĞā ŶāóĞłŋķŋėƘ you intend to install.

The next step The proposed training source has been well accepted by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). In fact, at the time of writing, they issued a survey very recently requesting installers’ thoughts on this direction. So, as we move through the decades and heating systems are inevitably replaced in every home, it is safe to say that these will be of a low-temperature sort. This is likely because as we have said time and time again, you must make homes ready for heat pumps, or for any low carbon technology. There are probably too many homes only suitable for the installation of a high temperature boiler and that’s not what the government really requires. Quite rightly, they want a choice of technologies. Implementing new training will help support this. ͻ phamnews.co.uk/˟˛˙̓˚˝

Training Update

Tips for working on showers To meet the demand for remote training, Triton Showers has produced six troubleshooting videos that can be accessed online to help those seeking advice on common site or product issues. Available on YouTube, they cover some of the most frequently asked questions that the Triton customer service team receives. These include a range of enquiries, from changing the pressure relief device to ensuring the temperature dial is accurate. Triton suggests that many fixes are simple enough for tradespeople to do when provided with a quick refresher on the topic. Martyn Brown, regional service manager

Free heat pump set-up assistance for trainees

at Triton, goes through each step as well as using visual examples to demonstrate the process and tools to use, providing reassurance to those neeeding help on site. Martyn comments: “We have created these materials to support plumbers during these difficult times. For those who cannot brush up on their knowledge in person, this information will hopefully

enable them to solve any queries they have. As a manufacturer we are doing all that we can to look after the health and safety of our staff and customers, as this is our top priority right now.” The troubleshooting videos can be accessed by visiting Triton’s YouTube channel using the reader link below. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/15

Courses restructured for online delivery Installers can now sign up to two of APHC’s courses that were previously only available in person but have been redeveloped for delivery online. Plumbers can sit APHC’s Legionella Cold Water Risk Assessment and Disinfection course and the Sanitary and Above Ground Drainage course remotely via a desktop or laptop computer with either a built-in or externally fitted camera.

The Sanitary and Above Ground Drainage course is aimed at practising installers to update their knowledge on the design and installation of above ground sanitary and rainwater systems to meet current Building Regulations. T

he challenging operating conditions caused by the global health crisis has meant that many manufacturers, including Vaillant, have had to quickly adapt their ways of working to continue to support heating professionals. Our commitment to helping installers meant that we continued working during lockdown to focus on providing a full programme of support, which included the rapid development of online training modules and business clinics. Working in partnership with a number of industry experts, including The Sales Resolution and The Boiler Business, our business clinics cover a range of topics, such as marketing, business resilience and apprenticeships. At the time of writing, more than 1200 installers have already registered for an online session, and they’ve proven so popular that we’ve added in additional dates across the summer to ensure we’re able to meet demand. During the height of the restrictions, the Vaillant website became a valuable support hub with up-to-date information and guidance for heating and plumbing professionals, on everything from the latest working restrictions to the financial support options available to those working in the trade.

Back to it However, with the recent easing of lockdown measures and gradual re-opening of society, we’ve now turned our focus to helping installers get back to work safely and make the most of the commercial opportunities available. According to recent research, half of UK homeowners say they have plans to carry out home improvement work following lockdown, and one in eight expect this to happen over the next six months. This provides significant business opportunities for installers looking to re-establish work levels back to previous volumes. With many installers now back at work, the support hub on the Vaillant website offers access to a range of literature to promote safe working practices, including downloadable safety guides and infographics to cover precautions before, during and after a home visit. There’s also a handy homeowner PDF guide which can be sent to consumers ahead of a visit to help build trust and confidence during uncertain times. The safety of our installers and their customers is of paramount importance,

so we’ve also developed our Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) packs which have been designed to create a safer working environment for all. The packs are available on the Vaillant Advance loyalty scheme for just 100 credits and contain: • • • • •

pairs of nitrile gloves x ml hand sanitisers x ml surface disinfectants x tissue packs x sterile wipes

These PPE packs have proved incredibly popular amongst installers, with more than 000 already ordered at the time of writing. With commercial competition for projects set to increase following the return to work, Vaillant Advance installers can make the most of digital assets to help promote their businesses. If customers remain wary of direct contact, this can be minimised by using FaceTime or WhatsApp to discuss potential jobs, or by taking advantage of the promotional offer we have with TradeGa e.com, a tool which allows installers to remotely survey properties and generate an electronic quote.

Minimising risk As the UK now looks to return to a new normal, it is understandable that consumers will naturally be concerned about inviting tradespeople back into their home after this extensive period. Therefore, installers need to do all they can to reassure clients that they understand their worries and have taken the appropriate measures to minimise risk, which is why Vaillant remains committed to supporting installers through these unprecedented times.

Bathroom Design 21

Opportunity to adapt With already some 1. million multi-generational households in the UK, this trend is only set to continue. laire Gay from oca looks at the design strategies to consider when making a bathroom accessible for all ages.

W

hen it comes to designing and installing a bathroom fit for a range of ages, exibility has to be key. With varying ages living in one home, bathrooms need to function in different ways to meet their needs. or example, if there are grandparents living in the house, there may well need to be bathrooms on the lower oors. This could be a wetroom or low-level shower tray to provide easy access. It s also important to consider safety, so temperature control valves need to be fitted on mixers. The layout of the bathroom also needs to be considered. This is where wall-hung sanitaryware and furniture is ideal as they can be mounted at a comfortable height for everyone to use. The modern design of these products also ensures that the bathroom feels like a normal bathroom, not one purely created for adaptable needs. omfort height toilets can also provide a well-designed solution for users who require additional support. ne of the key innovations that can really help in a multigenerational property is old Start technology. This is a

great way of saving energy and money, as the boiler won t kick in when turning a hot tap on. Normally when you turn a tap on this will automatically trigger a combi boiler to turn on and start heating up the water. However, in a home where there are occupants of varying ages needing water at different times, this can be expensive and wasteful. old Start technology ensures water is only heated when it is definitely required.

Smart living

Electronic ush plates are an ideal option. They offer a modern touch and are a great product for those who require an easy-to-use and simple ushing mechanism. Smart toilets are the latest innovation to enter the bathroom space and are ideal for homes with multiple needs. These toilets are extremely hygienic and provide complete cleaning, care and comfort for all users. or example, our In-Wash Inspira W is not only a stylish addition to the

bathroom, it incorporates innovative technology that is extremely easy to use. The remote control is intuitive, meaning that after just one operation, the user will be able to understand how the In-Wash functions. As technology continues to develop, we are going to see more examples of it in multigenerational homes. Smart showering solutions allow users to set their own profiles, turn the shower on before getting in, and even set an eco-shower mode. There are also safety measures that smart technology can help with, such as child safety modes, intelligent bath filling to stop over ows, as well as audio alerts and auto shutoffs. It s also important to think about the ease of cleaning and selecting products and materials that make life easier. or instance, the development of smooth, rimless toilets where there are no edges for germs and bacteria to build up are extremely hygienic as

well as easy to clean. The new water distributor within this type of toilet enables a strong ush, spreading water more consistently around the bowl for greater hygiene. A new generation of materials is also helping to make cleaning a simpler process. or example, ine eramic from oca not only creates precise designs, but it is 0% lighter and 0% more resistant to abrasives than conventional basins.

Taking care

As we ve seen, the trend and requirement for multigenerational living is set to continue. It has its advantages as it can help children struggling to get on the property ladder and grandparents be cared for at home. Installers have an opportunity to help their customers who are looking for multi-purpose bathrooms and give them much needed advice on how to adapt or build a space that will suit their ongoing needs. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/20

Choosing products that are better for environment

up to % of the energy cost of heating a shower. It s a simple way to recapture energy.

Recyclable materials

The bathroom is a place where water and energy are consumed in large quantities every day, but it also represents an opportunity to make savings in these areas. Here, Andr onseca from ypho offers some advice on how to make this busy room more sustainable and eco-friendly.

T

he environment is one of the biggest concerns around the globe. In recent years, we’ve seen documentaries, news articles, scientific reports, and government announcements explaining how we are destroying the environment. We need to address environmental concerns on multiple fronts it s not just energy supplies and plastics that are causing issues, it’s the overuse of everything, from water to fossil fuels, from packaging to fashion items. Fortunately, all this attention is changing buying habits. According to a recent survey from Accenture, over 0% of people felt it was important or extremely important for companies to design environmentally conscious products. 2 of people reported actively buying more environmentally-friendly products than they did five years ago, while 1% said they expected to buy even more over the next five years. Many of the systems we have

in place were designed when environmentalism wasn’t a great a concern. As such, many household products are pretty wasteful. As we know, ushing a toilet can use around 6 litres of water, with older models using far more. And it’s not just water that is wasted. Showers require heat and power, bathtubs are made from non-recyclable materials, and cleaning products can have a harsh impact. So, what options are there for making bathrooms better for the environment?

Low-

Choosing low- ow fixtures is an easy way for consumers to cut down on their water consumption. Efficient showerheads, toilets and taps all drastically reduce the amount of water being used without really affecting the quality of the shower ush ow. or example, dual- ush toilets have two ush methods which help reduce the average water

consumption per ush to four litres or less. Another example is the Nebia Spa Shower, which uses 10 precision no les to atomise the water. Not only does this leave you feeling just as clean as a regular shower, but it also saves up to % of the water.

Recapture the heat

These days, most of us enjoy the convenience of a power shower. But smart meters highlight just how much energy power showers use they re one of the biggest energy drains in the home. A lot of that heat energy is simply disappearing down the drain. In a power shower heated to 0ºC, the water going down the drain is still around ºC. ypho has created a recovery recapture system that can be retrofitted into existing showers to recapture that heat. All that water is used to pre-heat the fresh mains water going up to the shower, helping to save

 Zypho’s drain water heat recovery system can recover up to 15°C from the shower drain water, which is then used to pre-heat the mains water supplying the shower

22.indd 1

Recycling tends to be associated with disposable consumer products and packaging. After all, this is where much of the visible waste comes from. Yet bathrooms contain some of the largest items in the home and most are non-recyclable. Take bathtubs, for example. Most are made of fibreglass or acrylic – two materials that are difficult to recycle. A main reason for this is their durability and longevity, which is a good eco-credential to have. However, Kaldewei has created bathtubs made from steel enamel. Every tub comes with a 0-year guarantee, giving it the same longevity as traditional bathtub materials, but instead of ending up in a landfill these steel bathtubs can be completely recycled, along with all of its steel fittings. Another material to consider is recycled tiles. Tiles are commonly used in bathrooms as they are relatively watertight, resist the growth of bacteria and mould, and can be easily wiped clean. Most tiles, however, are created from virgin materials, using vast amounts of natural resources. Bedrock Industries creates bathroom tiles from recycled content. Not only does this save other materials from going to landfill but they can also be made into almost any style imaginable.

Better cleaning products

The bathroom is an area of the house most people want to be exceptionally clean. As such, most people opt for strong, intensive cleaning products, which have great antibacterial and anti-fungal properties but are bad for the environment. Fortunately, there are other options which you could suggest to your customers. The cheapest is to create homemade cleaners using household products such as vinegar. A simple web search will offer up a number of formulations they could make at home. There are also a number of environmentally-friendly cleaning brands, such as Seventh Generation and Ecover, that help avoid harsh chemicals.

Value over time

Some of these solutions may cost a little more upfront. However, there is money and resources to be saved for the long-term. Good news for professionals, for customers and for the planet. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/21

its surroundings. Furthermore, colour contrast is best achieved with contrasting shades of the same colour rather than different colours.

Smart tech

The bathroom can be a challenging area in the home for those with visual impairment. However, installers can cut the risks and enhance comfort by embracing design principles, explains Stuart Reynolds from AKW.

V

isual impairment impacts all areas of life, and the bathroom in particular can present many and varied challenges for those living with sight loss. Ensuring safety whilst promoting independence is the main challenge for installers faced with fitting a bathroom for these customers. Common issues those with visual impairment experience in the bathroom include: difficulties with orientation, poor depth perception, difficulty with locating items within a room (usually due to lack of definition) and less confidence engaging independently in activities. It is generally accepted that

Stuart Reynolds

lighting, clutter minimisation, contrast, maintaining accessibility, and utilising smart technology are instrumental in protecting individuals with sight loss. Incorporating products that address these issues will contribute to an individual remaining as independent as possible, for as long as possible, offering them increased choice surrounding their personal care.

Better lighting

The key here is to shift focus from illuminating a whole room to using task-specific lighting. For example, bright lights above

Overcoming odd spaces

W

24.indd 1

Avoiding clutter

Redundant objects or pieces of furniture are trip hazards to the visually impaired, so it’s important to ensure that there is sufficient built-in storage and that it’s easy to access.

Colour contrast

Using two colours where the light re ective value (L ) difference between both colours is greater than 30 will create the most noticeable contrast between an object and

ono at will further boost this effect. It can also be fitted with a movable splashback that can be folded away to one side. Those who don’t want to get rid of their bath can choose a compact size that doesn’t take up much space. If there are too many angles, they can also be concealed by a false wall. A toilet or a washing machine can be cleverly hidden away, while the wall itself will provide space for a washbasin.

Bathrooms with less than ideal proportions don t have to suffer from poor design, according to Kaldewei. With the right solutions to hand, installers can turn odd spots into functional and beautiful spaces. hen it comes to planning a bathroom, limited space, awkward angles and unusual layouts – like galley bathrooms or those under the eaves – often present major challenges. But with the right products, installers can equip themselves with everything they need to maximise the use of oor space while creating an aesthetically pleasing design.

the basin will illuminate the area where someone will wash their hands or brush their teeth.

Light touch

Lateral thinking helps when fitting out an alcove bathroom because it often produces surprising new approaches that can greatly improve the feel of the room. For example, alcoves offer a great opportunity to create more shelf space or add some special design features to a particular area of the room. In bathrooms like this, oor level showers can be real spacesavers. Tucked into an alcove, they separate the wet area from

the rest of the bathroom. In small bathrooms, this works well on two levels: it highlights the beauty of the architecture while saving space. Kaldewei offers over 100,000 choices for designing a oor level shower area alone. Bathrooms with odd angles can be tackled with a little creativity. Use of bright colours can lighten the mood and make the room look bigger. A oor level shower like the Kaldewei

Limited space doesn t have to be a problem either – it’s possible to design a dream bathroom even with a very long, narrow oor plan. A bath beneath the window, for example, will look great against the front wall. LED strips at the base of the bath will make it a really striking feature in a cramped bathroom. Light colours work particularly well in small bathrooms. Another tip is to match the colour of the shower with the oor tiles for continuity between the two areas. This makes the room seem more open, bigger and lighter. To

The use of tactile devices and controls, or those with auditory feedback, such as specially designed electric showers, all help to enhance accessibility and ease of use. There is a range of technology out there to help the visually impaired navigate the bathroom. One example is the AKW SmartCare Plus Bluetooth controlled electric shower, developed in conjunction with Occupational Therapists and the Royal National Institute of the Blind. Temperature and ow can be altered using tactile buttons on the shower unit, or using a wireless remote control or smartphone app.

Handy guide

In conjunction with Adam Ferry, occupational therapist, associate of The OT Service and director of UK Therapy Services, AKW has developed a special guide to designing and installing a bathroom that not only looks good but can also be used by someone who is visually impaired. To download it, simply use the online reader link below. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/22

go with the coloured shower, Kaldewei also offers a wide range of washbasins such as the Miena washbasin bowl. A bathroom under the eaves requires the installer to make clever use of slopes. Kaldewei recommends the use of an enamelled bath situated under the eaves, where there is no room for cupboards and washbasins. A false wall can be used to divide an attic bathroom into distinctly separate zones, creating calm and order and offering additional scope for the washing area. As an alternative to wall-hung washbasins, a countertop washbasin such as the Kaldewei Centro model can also work well in combination with a bath. The average bathroom has an area of only around 8m2 – which means many bathrooms are even smaller. Space saving solutions are critical here, such as the Cayono bath, which enables both showering and bathing. By combining two functions in one product, there is more room to move about and enough space for a toilet and washbasin. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/2

Renewable Energy 29

Prepare your business for change ahead It is widely accepted that change is coming to the UK domestic heating industry – perhaps the biggest it has ever experienced. The question is, are installation businesses ready for it? Here, Iain Bevan from Daikin UK explores what the government’s 20 0 carbon neutral target means for the industry and how installers can turn the evolving market to their advantage.

I

n June 201 , the UK government formally announced its objective for the country to become carbon neutral by 20 0, just 0 years away. On the journey to 20 0, we can expect to witness changes within all fundamental sections of society – from transport and industry through to agriculture – with new cycle lanes, a future ban on selling new diesel or petrol cars, and a dedicated government fund to plant more trees, among them. Understandably, one of the key contributors to achieving net zero carbon emissions will be a move away from fossil fuels, such as gas, oil and coal, to more renewable energy sources. With our homes’ traditional fossil fuel powered boilers at odds with the vision of a greener future, what does this all mean for the UK domestic heating industry?

Rising demand

Given the government’s formal 20 0 deadline, the proposed phase-out of gas boiler installations within new build properties by 202 (forming part of the Future Homes Standard) and changing attitudes within society, it is clear that change is coming to our industry. In

that this new renewable market presents. In order to successfully futureproof your business and help to ensure that you are not left behind by the changing tide, upskilling and extending your capabilities now is essential. Put simply, there has never been a better time to do so, with increased awareness of renewable energy systems and high levels of consumer demand. But how should you go about doing it?

fact, it may be here sooner than you think, with the demand for renewable energy and low carbon heating systems from housebuilders, local authorities and homeowners alike, set to rise significantly.

New normal

To put this into context, it is estimated that there are currently 1. million traditional boilers installed on a yearly basis. However, if we are to meet the 20 0 target, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has forecast that the industry would need to shift to installing one million heat pumps every year instead – by as soon as 20 0. Currently more commonly installed in rural, off-grid communities, heat pumps now stand to become one of the country’s primary domestic heating systems, essentially replacing the boilers of today. This represents one of the biggest changes perhaps ever seen before by the UK domestic heating industry, making it vital that you and your business are prepared. However, rather than looking at it as something to be feared, consider instead the exciting business opportunity and real potential for growth

Product training

Upskilling requires far more than an attendance at a one-off, oneday training course. Instead, to successfully make the transition from boilers to heat pumps and feel confident in doing so, you will need comprehensive product training that advances with your own experience. Tailored business support and advice will also be invaluable if you are to truly turn the new market demand to your advantage. Another point to consider is F-gas certification, which is required to handle refrigerant – an essential component of many heat pump systems. This may seem like a significant hurdle to overcome if you do not currently hold the certification. However, this doesn’t have to be the case at all, as there are heat pumps available that have been manufactured with a closed refrigeration system, meaning that you do not need to hold F-gas to install them.

Support network

With all of this in mind, it is worthwhile doing your research and exploring what help, training and support is currently offered by heat pump manufacturers and suppliers, as well as determining the product range each has on offer. Launched in May 2020, Daikin’s Sustainable Home Network is a programme

designed to provide you with the skills and support needed to turn the renewable revolution to your advantage. In addition to a carefully structured and comprehensive training programme, the Sustainable Home Network has business progression at its core, with members encouraged to advance through its three-tiered structure as their confidence and capabilities grow. ou would first enter the scheme as a Sustainable Home Installer, where you will receive access to high quality training on our monobloc heat pump (requiring no F-gas to install), as well as qualified homeowner leads and on-site support visits. Once you have gained experience and also become F-gas qualified – a process that we can support you through – you have the opportunity to progress to the next level: Sustainable Home Expert.

Each tier unlocks new tailored benefits, including access to our complete range of low temperature, high temperature and hybrid heat pump systems, extended product warranties, unlimited training, marketing materials, and access to a business development fund. Change is certainly coming to the domestic heating industry and it is important that installers prepare their business so that they are not left behind by the changing tide. By liaising with a heat pump manufacturer that offers comprehensive product training and business support, such as the Sustainable Home Network programme, you can be confident that you ll be provided with the skills and the tools needed to take advantage of this new market demand. We are currently running introductory online sessions for installers interested in joining the Sustainable Home Network. phamnews.co.uk/620/ 9

Renewable Energy

Better use of the solar spectrum When the technology of solar thermal and photovoltaics come together in a single unit, they combine to make better use of the solar spectrum and deliver both hot water and electricity. Eric Hawkins of Thermatricity explains the concept.

T

he picture at the top of this page shows a development of around 100 houses, which have two to three panels fitted to offset the carbon emissions from the gas boilers in the properties. I suggest that what needs to happen next is to increase the number of PV panels on the roof, but as photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors.

What is PVT?

PVT systems are designed to convert solar radiation into both thermal and electrical energy. PVT collectors combine photovoltaic solar cells – which convert sunlight into electricity – with a solar thermal collector, which transfers the otherwise unused waste heat from the PV module to a heat transfer uid. The combination of these two technologies in one panel represents a more efficient solution than an individual PV or a thermal panel. A house using a PVT system could have a 100 or 1 0 litre horizontal thermal store installed in the loft as the hot water preheat cylinder. The warmed water it produces would be circulated into the vented thermal store and back to the PVT panels to keep the PV panels cool between the spring and autumn months. The best working temperature

30.indd 1

for PV panels is below 26ºC, on the basis that PV cells show reduced efficiency as the temperature rises. However, in reality – depending on where the PV panels are installed – PV panels can reach over 0ºC in Australia and up to 0ºC in the UK.

Case in point

Consider a new home using a 2 0 to 00 litre hot water thermal store, heated by x kW immersion heaters. PV cells would offset some of the carbon emissions during the spring/ summer months, while the thermal heated water delivered by the pre-heat thermal store would reduce HW heating costs and carbon emissions. During winter months after the first ground frost the mains water to a property can be as cold as ºC. Under these circumstances, boilers have to work with these cold water temperatures, adding costs and increased carbon emissions. Compare this to a HW system fed with pre-heated cold water from 10ºC to 0ºC, thanks to the use of PVT technology.

Full immersion

Eric Hawkins

MD of Thermatricity

The assembly of the open vented thermal store in copper or stainless steel provides the store of water to be heated by x kW immersion heaters.

Inside the thermal store are 2 x 22mm stainless steel corrugated 1 L coils. The two heat exchangers are joined together on the outside by an in-line ow meter, which allows the ow of mains water to be set to what best meets the home’s hot water needs. The hot water out is via a thermostatic mixer valve. The first kW immersion heater is located at the base of the store, wired up to night time electricity rates. The second kW immersion heater is located 10in above the bottom one, as the daytime back-up to nighttime cheap rate. This can either be on a timer or switched on manually. The third immersion heater is a boost for the top part of the store that provides a guarantee of heated water to 0ºC, which services the hot water at mains pressure indirectly through the top coil.

How it works

1. The PV output goes to the grid where the homeowner is paid whatever the rate is for excess. Or a PV booster can be used to dump excess electricity through the second immersion heater, but this will not be enough to support heating. 2. The heated water from behind the PV panels is circulated via a standard central heating pump and solar controller direct through a 100 litre horizontal mounted thermal store in the loft. . A cold mains supply of water is connected to the heat exchanger coil inside and back out down to the main thermal store of 2 0 litres. . Every time hot water is drawn from any tap/shower outlet, pre heated cold water will ow from the loft thermal store to the main thermal store below. . A second option to PVT is a solar thermal heat pipe evacuated tube collector which would not require a circulating pump or a controller.

How the heating works

On the heating side of the system, it’s the water in the store that is circulated through under oor heating, warm air ow wall mounted units, or low water content radiators. 1. Cheap rate nighttime electricity is hard wired via a meter to the lower kW immersion heater from the time the grid supplies this cheap rate. 2. The immersion heater is set to 0ºC to provide maximum hot water in the store. . A circulating pump on a time clock/programmer is set to switch on at 6am, with a central room thermostat set at 20ºC. . Once the house has reached its set temperature the pump stops working until more hot water is called again. . Depending on the household’s lifestyle – whether a retired couple or a working family – the second 3kW immersion heater comes on (timed or manually) when required. 6. To have a guarantee of hot water for early morning washing and showers, the third immersion heater located in the middle of the store is timed to switch on between 6 and am, also set at 80ºC, so there is plenty of hot water owing out via the heat exchanger coils of 0ºC. Once there is a set time for early morning washing, this third heater is switched off, but programmed to switch back on at to pm and off at pm for evening use.

Not only is this system an affordable solution for many households – for social and council housing– the maintenance is also very low, compared to an unvented cylinder and a heat pump. A typical cost would be around £ 000, plus the heat emitters, which compares very favourably to a PV/heat pump and cylinder system costing £12,000. phamnews.co.uk/620/ 0

Air source heat pumps get the green light Air source heat pumps can play a key part in helping the UK to realise its commitment to a low carbon future. Steve Keeton from Vaillant argues that it’s important for installers to be ready to capitalise on future opportunities.

T

o pave the way for the Future Homes Standard, which will require new build homes to be ready for the future with low carbon heating and world-leading levels of energy efficiency from 202 , the government is consulting on revisions to Part L and Part F of Building Regulations. However, while these consultations are taking place and final decisions about what will and will not be allowed are still to be determined, what is crystal clear is that steps are being taken to decarbonise the heat in our homes to meet carbon reduction targets. One of the main routes currently being favoured is the use of ground and air source heat pumps, in lieu of gas boilers. However, while the technology is already available, uptake – up until now – has been slower than expected.

Critical role

Heating engineers and their skills will be critical for the UK to meet and implement the requirement for low carbon heating. The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has estimated that a total of , 00 installers would be needed by 20 to deploy the amount of installations necessary for the UK to stay on track and achieve net-zero by 20 0. As well as growing the number of qualified installers, we must ensure that those undertaking the work have the confidence and the right skills to build a reputable heat pump market.

More plus points The aroTHERM plus is Vaillant’s next generation heat pump which uses R2 0 refrigerant. R2 0 allows greater comfort levels to be achieved as it enables aroTHERM plus to run at a higher ow temperature of °C, providing 2 % more useable hot water than other heat pumps on the market. Heating engineers be critical for the requirement for low carbon heating

This initial demand will be serviced by professionals that are currently installing conventional heating technologies. The gas and oil installers of today already possess most of the competencies required for low carbon heating installation, but the industry needs to support them by helping to take their knowledge to the next level. At present, the industry bodies are reviewing changes to training schemes, with the publication of the CIPHE’s and HPA’s consultations on training for low-temperature heating systems and heat pumps. Both consultations will work to understand the existing skill base within the UK heating industry and the requirements for increasing the number of low carbon installers.

Online courses

To help overcome the skills gap and make training more accessible, we have created a range of informative online courses. The courses are designed to enable installers to better understand the technical and commercial aspirations behind green solutions, such as heat pumps, and be in a stronger position to discuss options with prospective clients. The multiple training options include modules that look at the issue of decarbonising heat, as well as a range of product training courses that delve into the technicalities of installing and commissioning our heat pump products, providing valuable knowledge they can

use to underpin future business building opportunities.

For many homeowners, the initial outlay of buying and installing heat pumps is a barrier to entry into the world of renewable heating. However, in many cases, the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive ( HI) can offer valuable return on investment, with quarterly payments paid out over a period of seven years – making them an attractive option for homeowners. Once installed, one of the main benefits of air source heat pumps is that they can help safeguard homeowners against the uctuations in oil and L G prices. In terms of running costs, they’re cheaper to run than many alternatives, offering a potential saving on annual fuel bills of between to 1 1

as low as dB, aroTHERM plus is also suitable for use in densely built up areas, including terraced housing estates. In addition, the new air-to-water heat pump is also fully compatible with Vaillant’s existing VRC 00 and new sensoCOMFORT system controls, and uniSTOR heat pump cylinders. With an ErP rating of A+++ and a SCoP value of up to .0 , the aroTHE M plus fulfills the next nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) requirements, making it one of the greenest heat pumps on the market, playing a significant role in

for electric storage heaters, £2 to 1100 for oil boilers, and £10 to £ 0 for gas boilers. The government has also announced financial support beyond the RHI, which will end in March 2022. One of these options is a lean Heat Grant, an upfront capital grant that would help address the barrier of upfront costs. While the government is determined to deliver a low carbon future, more energy efficient and sustainable home heating solutions will play an important role in helping to meet agreed national targets. The direction of travel for the decarbonisation of home heating is set, and installers who take the time now to prepare for a changing landscape will be helping to make a positive climate impact and future-proof their business success.

Why district heating is the way forward District heating is an increasingly popular solution for large-scale residential and commercial developments. onathan Moran from Warma oor says that it’s important for engineers to educate themselves about the next big thing in heating.

B

olstered by the government’s campaign to reduce carbon usage across the UK, district heating is an eco-friendly method for heating large-scale developments and provides an alternative to more traditional methods, such as gas boilers. It works by generating hot water from a centralised boiler and heat pump, which is then distributed through underground pipework into multiple dwellings. District heating is most commonly used in high rise apartment blocks, as

Jonathan Moran

Business development manager at ar afloor

a large amount of heat can be distributed to several apartments through individual heat interface units (HIUs). It has already carved out its own significant market share across Europe, due to its energy efficiency and low operational costs, ultimately reducing bills for the end user. However, the market here is also rapidly growing, with approximately ,000 district heating units being installed each year in the UK – a number that’s set to rise dramatically over the coming years.

Controllable heat is a vital utility. From heating and cooling in households to commercial properties and even in manufacturing, it’s needed in virtually every aspect of everyday life. However, statistics show that heat is currently responsible for around a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. Most of our heat is produced by burning fossil fuels, and around 0% of this is from natural gas alone. This is clearly neither sustainable nor efficient and, evidently, something needs to change. To tackle carbon emissions and address issues surrounding climate change and pollution control, the UK government has put in place a ‘Strategic Framework for Low Carbon Heating’. A key part of the framework is that gas boilers will no longer be permitted in new homes from 202 , leaving installers with only two options – an electric boiler or a district heating system. To adhere to the new guidelines, a large number of businesses, organisations and housing developers are now making more conscious and efficient choices to help tackle environmental issues and become carbon neutral, with heating being a key priority.

35.indd 1

As there is just one source of energy in district heating, it can be a much more efficient and less wasteful way of generating and distributing heat – especially when compared to heating up multiple smaller tanks throughout the day. It’s also a lot safer than solutions using traditional boilers, as the risk of gas ignition is significantly lowered by installing only one boiler for an entire building. There is also the option for district heating to run completely without gas, either from the national grid or from renewable energy sources – important given the upcoming regulations regarding gas boilers. Whereas electric individual boilers are often seen as costly options, district heating can massively reduce costs for the

BY NUMBERS

80%

end user. This is especially true in buildings such as schools, multi-residence housing and large-scale developments that often need to use up more energy, leading to excessive bills for individual units. By using a district heating system with individual heat interface units, the end user or tenant is completely in control of what they are using, with any excess heat being shared amongst other units. The installation and maintenance process for district heating is simple as well, as there is no gas present in the HIUs. This means that heating installers don’t have to have gas safety checks, and maintenance and installation work can be carried out by plumbers themselves, following sufficient training.

Moving away from traditional methods of heating should be embraced as positive progression, as it opens up more opportunities for efficient solutions. The government has predicted that by 20 0, district heating could potentially be providing up to 1 % of the country’s heat demand, as opposed to the 2% it currently accounts for. Although district heating is most commonly used in large housing developments such as apartment blocks, it’s expected that it will also become hugely popular in other types of housing over the coming years, as we move even closer towards a more sustainable and carbon neutral future. With the upcoming prohibition of gas boilers in 202 , it’s imperative that contractors and installers take the time now to educate themselves on district heating and the wealth of benefits it brings to get ahead of the game. ◼ /620/ 5

Light Commercial Heating

How pre-fab solutions contribute to safety Balancing physical distancing and safe working conditions with a backlog of projects? Prefabricated heating solutions could be the answer, says Dan Martindale from Baxi Heating, who argues they offer a wide range of benefits, from time saving to health and safety.

A

s we enter the new normal and our focus shifts from maintaining heating and hot water in essential buildings, installers will be planning to return to the list of heating projects that were previously put on hold. The challenge for installers and contractors will be to complete projects as safely and efficiently as possible to the same high quality results. Given the new hurdles thrown up by the pandemic, some agile improvisation might be required to find effective new ways of working in the months ahead. Fortunately, techniques are already available that can reduce onsite time and labour while improving onsite safety. One such option is to use prefabricated heating equipment.

ffsite fabrication is well established as a means of delivering quality, customisation and cost benefits with reduced waste. By carrying out the fabrication offsite, using specialist machinery in qualitycontrolled conditions, safety requirements can more easily be met and policed, enabling health and safety to be prioritised. A bespoke rig can be thought of as a mini plant room that comes complete with boilers, pumps, low loss headers or plate heat exchangers

Dan Martindale

Commercial sales director at Baxi Heating

Using prefabricated equipment delivers time savings not just during installation but at multiple points throughout the project

But how can it benefit heating On larger-scale projects, offsite manufactured packaged plant room solutions are increasingly used to achieve the same benefits for heating and more. And when it comes to light commercial heating projects, prefabricated heating equipment can again deliver huge advantages, from time savings to increased ease of scheduling. Turnkey heating solutions like offsite fabricated boiler rig modules, for example, not only allow multi-boiler installations to be carried out faster, but meet the goal for improved safety onsite.

Time saving

So what is a bespoke rig and how does it differ from a manufacturer cascade package? Most manufacturers offer comprehensive at pack cascade systems. While these can considerably simplify multiple boiler installation, they still require a significant element of onsite assembly work. In contrast, a bespoke rig is essentially a mini plant room system that comes complete with a bespoke configuration of either wall hung or oor standing boilers, pumps, low loss headers or plate heat exchangers. Ancillary items such as projectspecific controls, a dosing pot and a pressurisation unit can also be integrated into the rig. Fabricated in factory conditions, it is then delivered to the plant room on a wheeled frame, with insulated pipework set. By completely removing the need for hot works and onsite fabrication related to the boiler assembly, installers can minimise the time they need to spend on site as well as the number of workers and skills required, making it easier to adhere to safer working requirements.

Rapid installation

Unlike cascade systems, the offsite rig is exible in terms of design. Good manufacturers will be able to configure the boilers bespoke to each project and tailor the design to accommodate all individual site and project requirements at the outset. This means that common challenges to installation such

36.indd 1

as space and access restrictions can be addressed and overcome through the design, and time consuming snags onsite avoided. Where access is particularly constrained, for example, it’s possible to design the bespoke rig so that it can be split into smaller modules, with simple reconnection into a single frame in the plant room. And when speed is of the essence, there’s even the opportunity to match the position and size of the system connections on the rig to the existing pipework in the plant room for rapid connection. Additionally, as the equipment comes from one supplier, only one delivery slot is required, making arranging site access more straightforward and reducing the possibility of late delivery, which helps keep the project on track. Using prefabricated equipment like a bespoke rig delivers time savings not just during installation but at multiple points throughout the project. As experienced manufacturers will prepare all the design work, including sizing the pumps and low loss header or plate heat exchanger for site requirements, installers can use this regained time to complete other projects. This factor also makes it an attractive option for installers moving into commercial heating. During the production phase, while the heating solution is being fabricated in the factory environment, contractors and installers can forge ahead with

preparatory work to speed up installation.

Looking ahead

The ability to front-load the design not only benefits the speed of installation but makes it possible to plan for easier future maintenance. If the building is to be expanded at a later date, for example, there is the option to futureproof the rig so that another boiler can be added. Importantly, the design addresses long term performance because the boilers are easier to service and maintain and, ultimately, to isolate, remove and replace, reducing labour and downtime. As the boilers are identical models, only one service kit is required.

Ensuring that a building’s heating system operates reliably and efficiently is central to improving its energy performance. And given that many commercial buildings depend on boilers for their heating, efficiency frequently starts with boilers and their controls. After months of lockdown, installers and contractors will be keen to ramp up activity and maximise their productivity so that they can achieve the required high efficiency heating for their customers. Prefabricated solutions could be the key to doing just that, all the while prioritising a safe working environment. phamnews.co.uk/620/ 6

he e ibility of t in ue Some light commercial boiler applications may require a longer ue run, but a twin ue system can provide the installer with a more exible solution. Charlie Mowbray of Keston Boilers highlights some of the key benefits.

B

oiler installations for large domestic or light commercial projects can present a number of challenges for installers, as not all are the same. There are many elements that need to be considered such as the boiler position, ue termination, and regulations regarding the property, to name a few, and installations can become more complex if you are restricted to just one type of ue system. Twin ue boiler systems can offer a good solution to installations that require a longer ue run, allowing for boilers to be positioned in locations that cannot be ued concentrically directly through an external wall. The vast majority of domestic boilers are designed with a concentric ue system where the air supply and ue gases are managed within one ue. They are designed as a duct within a duct, with the exhaust gases taken away through the inner duct and the combustion air drawn in through the outer duct. Twin ue boiler systems will perform the same task as concentric systems, but allow further exibility in distance. Both systems have an air intake and an exhaust ue, but in a twin ue installation the ues do not run within one another – they run separately. This type of system offers a different way to install boilers as it allows further options where the ue runs can go. or example, the twin ue runs are not restricted to run parallel, meaning that the air position will not be limited by the same restrictions placed on the termination of the combustion ue. This added benefit means the combustion gas pipe can run further to the desired termination point while the air pipe can run through the nearest external wall next to the boiler. The maximum combined length for both ues on a Keston boiler is 2 m in total, so

the air ue can be terminated m away from the boiler, allowing the remaining 2 m left for the exhaust ue run.

Cost saving

Twin ue systems will offer a cost-effective solution if the boiler placement is in the basement of the property. Rather than dealing with the additional work and cost of moving the boiler position, twin ue solutions can be used to give the extra length that is needed without any hassle. If the original boiler position was within an area that did not have straight access to an external wall, the consideration of moving the boiler, gas and water pipework and ue runs to suit a concentric system would need to be taken into account. However, rather than moving a boiler to fit a concentric ue, a retrofit replacement with a twin ue solution would present a far simpler and more cost-effective solution. As well as avoiding the cost of having to re-site the boiler, twin ue systems can be significantly cheaper than proprietary concentric ue systems. The Keston twin ue system requires manufacturer approved small diameter ( 0mm) muPVC (PVC-C) solvent weld pipes, one for the air duct and one for the combustion gases. This solvent weld pipe is a fraction of the price of many other ue systems. There are also certain properties where twin ue

could be used to benefit the installation, such as landlocked ats where there probably won t be sufficient external wall space for the ue termination to be placed. For example, there may be a balcony or windows near where the ue termination would normally be. There are also certain properties that have additional legislation to consider regarding ue runs, such as listed buildings, where regulations may prevent ues from being positioned in front of the property or any area that would be seen from a highway.

need to be done, such as added plastering after the hatch has been completed. There are other elements that need to be considered outside of BS 0 1 200 , the British Standard that sets out the uing requirements for boilers not exceeding 0kW. All ues need to be adequately supported and all joints, other than manufacturer approved push-on or plastic compression connectors, are made and sealed with solvent cement suitable for the manufacturer approved muPVC (PVC- ) ues conforming to BS 20 .

Flues in voids

There are many types of installations that would reap the benefits of twin ue systems, such as those in pubs, care homes and landlocked ats. Many of these types of building require a longer than average ue length, which could be determined by the original location of the boiler. Twin ue systems are more cost and time effective for these boiler positions than concentric systems, while also complying with ue termination regulations. They offer a unique resolution for installers with tricky heating challenges. At Keston Boilers we offer heating solutions for both domestic and commercial installations and free training is available at our Training Centre of Excellence sites in Hull, Leeds and Reading. ◼ /620/ 7

When using a twin ue system there are some additional measures that need to be considered, such as the Gas Safe technical bulletin TB200/TB00 regarding ues in voids. Where boilers are located away from an external wall the ues are likely to run through the ceiling or wall voids. In these cases, inspection hatches will need to be installed at appropriate points along the ue runs to ensure safety checks can be completed. To ensure ues can be examined thoroughly, inspection hatches should be 00 by 00mm in size, and no ue joint within the void should be more than 1. m away from the edge of the nearest inspection hatch. Making space for these hatches could mean additional remedial work would

Ready to resume play As a cricket club in Camberley prepares to get back into action after the lockdown period, it was looking for a new heating and hot water system. Lochinvar provided the answer with its EcoCharger and Heatpak solutions.

L

ochinvar has helped Camberley Cricket Club replace its heating and hot water system following a series of breakdowns of its old equipment. Play might have been suspended for a large part of the summer, but as the club returns to life it required a reliable system for users of the facility. The old heating and hot water ŭƘŭŶāĿ óŋĿťũĢŭāù Ö ƪŋŋũ ŭŶÖłùĢłė ėÖŭ Ʃũāù ðŋĢķāũ Öłù Ö dŋóĞĢłƑÖũ Charger storage water heater. The Charger water heater had provided a reliable supply of hot water for showers, kitchen and various other hot water outlets for ˛˙ years, and the boiler was of a similar age. number of alternative proposals. They were keen that the new system would be both reliable and have limited environmental impact thanks to reduced carbon emissions and improved ŋťāũÖŶĢłė āƧóĢāłóĢāŭ̍

Good track record Lochinvar proposed an EcoCharger ėÖŭ Ʃũāù óŋłùāłŭĢłė ƒÖŶāũ ĞāÖŶāũ together with a Heatpak space heating module, which would ĿāÖł ŶĞā óķŽð ĞÖù ŶĞā ðāłāƩŶ of hot water and heating from a ŭĢłėķā̇ ĞĢėĞ āƧóĢāłóƘ ťũŋùŽóŶ̍ Club chairman Keith Halsey said the fact that the previous Lochinvar water heater had provided a reliable hot water supply for so many years played a part in their decision to use Lochinvar products once again. “Our previous experience with Lochinvar had been very positive

so they were a strong candidate to be our supplier of choice,” he says. “An action plan was agreed and we were impressed with the details and timescales provided. “Commissioning was completed after installation contractor KV Cooling Services and Lochinvar worked together to overcome some teething problems.” EcoCharger water heaters are available in eight sizes with hot water outputs ranging from ˞˝˙ to ˛˚˙˙ litres per hour, based on a temperature rise of ˞˙ºC. They make use of condensing technology, which helps to achieve high operating āƧóĢāłóĢāŭ Öłù Öũā ùāŭĢėłāù along the principles of low storage, but fast recovery of hot water. This means they are

capable of meeting high peak hot water demands, such as from showers at the end of a match. The low storage helps to conserve fuel during periods of lower hot water demand. The Heatpak space heating module is an ancillary option available with the EcoCharger range and can provide up to ˝˙kW of low temperature hot water for UFH or radiator heating circuits. Heatpak is a particularly suitable option for applications like local sports club facilities, where there is peak demand for hot water, but lower constant space heating demand. The use of such a combined hot water and heating system can also save valuable plant room space. ͻ phamnews.co.uk̓˟˛˙̓˝ˡ

Vans & Racking 43 Connected vehicle update

No need to compromise on loads with new electric model The Vivaro from Vauxhall has seen a fully electric model added to its range. Built on the same line as the diesel-engined Vivaro, and available in two lengths and two body variants, the new battery electric Vivaro-e has a range of 188 miles. The payload of up to 122 kgs is comparable to that of similar LCVs with internal combustion engines. The load it can carry is only 1 0kgs less than a Vivaro fitted with a diesel engine. Customers can choose between two sizes of lithium-ion battery, depending on their needs. A kWh unit provides up to 188 miles of range, while users with

smaller areas to cover in the working day can opt for a 0kWh battery with a range of up to 12 miles. A sophisticated regenerative braking system recovers the energy produced under braking or deceleration, further increasing efficiency. The electronically controlled maximum speed of 81mph

means adhering to speed limits on UK motorways can be achieved with ease, while preserving the electric range. The battery located under the load compartment also lowers the centre of gravity, which benefits the cornering and stability of the Vivaro-e, even when it is fully laden. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/52

Ford is making its commercial vehicles ‘connected as standard’, with the FordPass Connect modem now factory-fitted as standard to all its LCVs. This enables a range of remote productivity and convenience features via the FordPass Pro smartphone app. The modem also enables over-the-air (OTA) software updates to keep commercial vehicles current with new technology by wirelessly delivering new features and quality enhancements. Guard Mode, a new security system accessed through the FordPass Pro app, will be the first new feature to be activated by an TA update. This heightened-security mode will monitor commercial vehicles in real time. Regular software updates will help ensure that vehicle systems and components continue to operate with optimum safety and performance, alerting owners of any potential breaches in their security. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/5

Built with business in mind

Transporter available in fully electric model or the first time in the UK, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers an all-electric van. The ABT eTransporter .1 combines quiet and smooth driving, instant torque, fast charging and high load capacity for urban use. The model is capable of a range up to 82 miles with a cargo space of . m3. Flexible charging options allow for 0% charge in just minutes. The new van delivers a maximum power output of 110PS (8 kW), with a 0 2mph time of just 1 . seconds. The lightweight electric motor provides smooth and quiet driving, low maintenance and instant maximum torque. This is connected to the battery via the power electronics that supply energy to both the on-board electronics and the electric motor. The compact battery is fitted underneath the load area to avoid compromising the cargo area

of . m3 and payload of up to 1001kg. The ABT eTransporter 6.1 is also fitted with regenerative braking, switching the drive motor to generator operation to recover energy lost when braking. The resulting current is fed back into the battery and stored for later use. Not forgetting technology in the cab, drivers can benefit from a DAB+ radio system with . inch touchscreen and four loudspeakers, SD card slot, Bluetooth handsfree and two USB interfaces in the dashboard. Volkswagen AppConnect, which allows you to bring smartphone apps to the system’s touchscreen, is also standard alongside a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System, rear parking sensors and Crosswind Assist. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/55

Renault Pro+ has launched a feature-packed Business+ trim level to the Kangoo Z.E. electric van range. Based on the existing Business trim, the Business+ brings a host of upgrades and equipment delivering enhanced comfort and convenience. Available in both medium and long-wheelbase versions, the Business+ retains the kWh battery and kW motor for the same 1 -mile range and zero tailpipe emissions. It offers £10 0 worth of equipment for just 00 compared to the Business version. On the outside, the van benefits from metallic paint with body-coloured bumpers,

while electrically operated and folding wing mirrors are finished in stylish gloss black. The cab has a central armrest with storage below and an overhead parcel shelf to boost practicality. The generous load area comes fitted with a practical rubber oor covering. Making life easier for the driver is standard-fit one-touch

functionality for the electric front windows, while rear parking sensors give drivers greater confidence when dealing with tight spaces or difficult manoeuvres. Payload ranges from 0 to 0kg and there is enough space to accommodate a British or Euro pallet. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/5

Limited edition of Ducato launched A new limited edition of the Ducato large van has been launched by Fiat Professional. Just 100 examples of the Shadow Edition in LWB will be made

available in the UK. It features a new pastel grey paint, painted front bumper and black alloy wheels. Inside, it features a new inch

DAB radio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and full air conditioning. For awkward manoeuvres, the rear parking sensors should also come in handy, which are fitted as standard. All these extras are all on top of the standard trim’s high specification list, which includes a fixed full width steel bulkhead, side loading door, electric heated mirrors, deadlocks and electronic stability control. The Ducato Shadow Edition has a 1 0hp 2. -litre multijet II engine. The large panel van returns 0. mpg and generates CO2 emissions as low as 1 g/km. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/56

Advanced controls will keep users informed Developed in response to feedback from both consumers and installers, the new sensoCOMFORT and sensoHOME controls from Vaillant have been designed to offer increased connectivity and come with a smart modern design. With just a few simple touches, customers can set a heating schedule to meet their needs. Both models feature load compensation and weather compensation as standard, while the wired sensoCOMFORT can control up to five heating zones with individual room temperatures. In addition, both the wired and wireless versions of the sensoCOMFORT are also compatible with Vaillant’s sensoAPP and renewable heating technologies, such as heat pumps.

No messing about with new FlueSnug

or ease of installation, the in-built eBUS connection offers guided commissioning and will synchronise seamlessly with any Vaillant boiler. For larger properties, the sensoNET internet gateway, when paired with ambiSENSE smart radiator valves, allows for 20 individual heating zones to be created. The new energy dashboard feature on the senso controls range gives increased visibility of

energy usage, while consumers will also be alerted when a service is required or if a fault has occurred. ollowing industry feedback, Vaillant has also extended the guarantees offered on its controls range to match the boiler or heat pump that it s installed with, meaning it could be covered for up to 10 years depending on the product fitted. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/57

The team behind PipeSnug – an innovative product designed to provide a smart and quick-to-apply finish around pipework – has launched a larger ‘FlueSnug’ version designed to fit all 100mm boiler ues. emoving any need for pointing, lueSnug can be installed in a matter of seconds and snuggly fits the 1 2mm core-drilled hole through which the boiler pipe and ue exits. It can be used both inside and outside the property and also acts as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects, and pests. FlueSnug also allows installers to quickly access the ue for any service or maintenance requirements, without the need to remove existing brickwork, mortar or sealant. It can then be quickly reinstalled, again saving time and cost. The new product is said to offer installers a costeffective way to comply with proposed changes to the Building egulations, which are set to mandate the need for pipe collars or grommets where pipe enters or exits a home. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/60

With the help of a smartphone, it is possible to switch devices connected to telltask on and off, and to determine their operating state. So heating can be switched on in a holiday home in advance of arrival and a warning can be sent if a free er suffers from a power failure. The telltask box contains sensors that, depending on the version, record just the temperature, or the temperature and the humidity. If the

measured values deviate from the programmed values, telltask notifies up to six authorised persons via text message. These persons can then react quickly to the alarm. The telltask control and alert system is available in different models. The entrylevel version, telltask 1 1 (pictured) has one relay output and one digital input, each with a potential-free contact. All it needs in terms of power supply is a voltage of 2 V at a power consumption of 1 A, making the device suitable for use in a boat or caravan. A temperature sensor monitors the room temperature, for which two alarm thresholds are programmed. The wall-mounted device comes with a G antenna, plug-in power supply, USB cable, and multilingual software. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/58

The Bosch EasyControl from Worcester Bosch can now be integrated with the Alexa voice command system from Amazon. This upgrade enables customers to control the heating of their homes from anywhere in the property by simply using their voice. There are a total of five commands available, including asking Alexa the current room temperature, asking for the current temperature setpoint, and increasing or decreasing that temperature setpoint by x or y degrees. Existing Easy ontrols can be updated by homeowners without the need for an installer. In order to update the system, a simple update to the app will be available through either a push notification or manual updating. The EasyControl must then be synced to the homeowner’s Alexa. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/620/61
