Report reveals that UK installers are uncertain about heat pumps A new report produced by Baxi has found a divergence of opinions when installers are asked if they are likely to ʭ_ SPL_ [`X[^ TY _SPT] customers’ homes in the near future. The research, which quizzed more than ˛˙˙ installers, has found that heating engineers are split on whether they intend to install heat pumps, with training costs, lack of customer demand, and excess paperwork cited as the main barriers to change. The report from Baxi assessed what would encourage installers to take the leap to low carbon sources of heat and found that nearly a third (˛ˡ%) – the equivalent of ˜ˠ̇˙˙˙ of the ˚˜˙̇˙˙˙ UK heating engineers – are prepared to embrace heat pumps in the near future. By contrast, around ˜˙% say they are extremely unlikely to install heat pumps. The government is targeting ˟˙˙̇˙˙˙ heat pump installations every year by ˛˙˛ˡ. That is ten times the current market and represents a transformat ion from early adoption to a mass market proposition, which Baxi says would require an army of low carbon heating installers to facilitate. According to estimates, there are currently around ˛˙˙˙ heat pump installers operating in the UK today and this will need to rise to more than ˜˙̇˙˙˙ by ˛˙˛ˡ and ˟ˢ̇˙˙˙ by ˛˙˜˞. Among the key findings in the report, ‘Heating Installers: Taking
they wanted support to reduce t he adm i n ist r at ion bu rden, for example in applying for government assistance schemes. The report makes a series of recommendations which include spelling out stronger government initiatives that will drive demand for heat pumps over the coming decade; support for training costs on a first-come, first-served basis; and an industry wide campaign to market the role of a low carbon heating installer to attract new entrants.
Reaching targets the Leap to a Low Carbon Future’, is that there is a notable proportion of installers near retirement age, with ˜˜% of those surveyed aged ˞˞ or above. It is assumed that this group may not feel incentivised to make the switch. The highest number of installers are within the age range ˝˞̟˞˝ (˜˚%), which means that around two-thirds of engineers have ˚˙-˛˙+ years of their career left until they enter retirement.
Size matters The report also concludes that there is a significant relationship between the size of a business and the likelihood of it fitting heat pumps in the near future. Some ˢˡ% of respondents had ˚˙ employees or fewer in their business, with the majority (˟ˢ%) being sole traders. Of those sole traders, just ˜% are currently installing heat pumps, with only ˡ% saying they are ‘extremely likely to’ and ˚˜% ‘likely to’ in the next three years.
Looking at some of the potential barriers that might dissuade installers from embracing the heat pump market, the survey reveals that ˜ˢ% of respondents said they would be more likely to install heat pumps if they received help with training costs. They currently pay the full cost of training and forgo work in order to receive heat pump training. More than two-thirds (ˠ˚%) of engineers chose hands-on training as the preferred route to becoming fully equipped to advise customers about low-carbon heating technology. Looking at customer demand, ˞˟% of installers said customer demand needed to be addressed and ˜ˡ% of installers are concerned about lack of government support for the market. Installers reported that customers often didn’t ask about low-carbon heating, with only ˚˙% saying that customers asked about low-carbon heating technology most of the time or more. On paperwork, ˝˝% said that
It concludes that about a third of installers are open-minded about making the leap, which is enough to reach government targets, but there are a significant number that are not willing, and it’s likely that this group are typically (but not exclusively) those who are nearing retirement age. Karen Boswell, MD of Baxi UK & Ireland, comments: “Installers will play an important role as we decarbonise the nation’s heating and it will be vital that the government and industry support them with the right information, incentives and training. “They will need to be advocates for low carbon sources of heat and recommend to the nation’s homeowners that they should make the leap to a heat pump. To achieve this, we will need to address their concerns, support them with training, and explain more clearly the financial and non-financial benefits of these appliances.” To download the report, please use the online link below: ͻ phamnews.co.uk/ˠ˛˛̓˙˝

Overcoming barriers This month’s cover story highlights a new report from Baxi which sets out to establish some of the barriers that might discourage heating engineers from wanting to install heat pumps. The need for extra training and the burden of additional paperwork are cited by many installers, but the biggest obstacles ZQ LWW L]P _SP WLNV ZQ NZY^`XP] OPXLYO LYO ʭ YLYNTLW ^`[[Z]_ It is too early to say whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has had much of an impact in driving consumer demand for heat pumps, but it is clear that the cashback scheme falls short if it is expected to help transform the market to the level where the installation of low carbon technologies start to match that of gas boilers. As well as the steep upfront capital cost of replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump, recent studies have acknowledged that consumers cannot expect to see a reduction in their rapidly spiralling heating bills. In fact, the latest report from the Climate Change Committee (CCC) estimates that average running costs for a heat pump are likely to be ˚˙% higher than that for a gas boiler – that’s hardly a message to encourage investment from hard-pressed households already struggling with the cost of living. Running costs are currently distorted by carbon taxes that mean that electricity is around four times more expensive than gas, and many in the industry have highlighted the need for a WPaPW [WLdTYR ʭ PWO ?SP -LcT ]P[Z]_ NZYNW`OP^ _SL_ _SP [P]XLYPY_ removal of the green levy on electricity would tilt the economics towards installing a heat pump, therefore enabling a viable whole-life cost proposition. N ÖĢĿŭ Ŷŋ give a voice to installers The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has announced the launch of a new membership category for installers that will be offered at an affordable rate and help to ensure that the installer’s voice is represented in any future decision making. The trade association has also issued a new document that calls for a strong partnership between industry and government to help transform Britain’s domestic heating market and encourage a shift away from fossil fuel boilers in favour of heat pumps. Placing the role of the heating installer at the heart

of the transition, the HPA’s ‘Transforming Britain’s Heating – a Pathway to Heat Pumps’ identifies some of things that need to happen if the government is to meet its declared target of ˟˙˙̇˙˙˙ heat pumps being installed annually by ˛˙˛ˡ.
These include the creation of a highly skilled workforce and a long-term, predictable policy framework for home heating. The document also draws attention to the investment needed in UK manufacturing and training and highlights the need for further training courses, qualifications, support schemes and apprenticeships. Speaking at the Westminster launch event in June, HPA chair Phil Hurley said: “The next decade will see the biggest shake-up of the heating sector in living memory as the country’s homes become increasingly heated by heat pumps. “The heat pump industry is fully ready to take on this challenge and be the prime mover for this change, with government providing the enabling policy change. Significant investments in UK
manufacturing and installer training have already been made in response to some of the signals government has given so far. Further clarity of the policy framework will unlock the remaining investor confidence needed to finish the job. “Today’s ˚˜˙̇˙˙˙ heating installers and a new generation of apprentices will be front and centre of this transition. Our Pathway document sets out some of the ideas for how the industry/government partnership can work to support them in becoming part of the government’s ˛˙˜˙ target for ˝ˡ˙̇˙˙˙ high skilled jobs to power the Green Industrial Revolution.” To find out more about Installer Membership of the HPA, please use the online link below: ͻ phamnews.co.uk/ˠ˛˛̓˙˞

Oil heating body calls for affordable low carbon option The government must take immediate action to ensure the UK’s off-grid homes and businesses have affordable and realistic options as the UK works towards decarbonising heat and meeting net zero targets. This was the key message at OFTEC’s 2022 conference, held on 23rd June at the Installer Show in Birmingham. Industry leaders at the conference were united in their commitment to deliver a UK-wide rollout of renewable liquid fuel to oil-heated homes and called on the government to put in place the policy mechanisms to achieve this over the coming years. OFTEC chairman Nick Hawkins opened the conference and introduced speakers from the leadership team at OFTEC and UKIFDA. The focus was firmly on
t CEO Paul Rose speaking at the OFTEC 2022 conference in June
the industry’s commitment to a technology-neutral approach to off-grid decarbonisation, recognising the diverse nature of the UK’s housing stock and the need for consumers to have a choice of affordable low carbon solutions to suit their needs. Paul Rose, CEO of OFTEC, took to the floor to discuss the policy landscape for regional off-grid heating and made the case for the important role renewable liquid fuels can play in harder-to-treat
Presidents take office at CIPHE and SNIPEF The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and the Scottish Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers Federation (SNIPEF) have each welcomed a new president to their organisation for the 2022/2023 term. Dr Henry Hung EngTech Hon FCIPHE RP was elected as national president of CIPHE, taking over from outgoing president Melville Gumbs. Dr Hung has dedicated himself to sanitary and plumbing engineering for more than 40 years and holds a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Master Degree of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Newcastle (Australia). He has set out a number of goals for his presidential year, with globalisation of the CIPHE at the top of his list. This includes the to establishment of CIPHE branches in Singapore, Malaysia and China, modelled on the successful Hong Kong branch, which already boasts more than 1500 members. “This will help in the promotion and dissemination of the Institutes’s good work for the benefits of public health promotion and saving many lives,” says Dr Hung. Meanwhile, Jim Butter has been named SNIPEF’s new president, after seven years as a national council member. Jim has been involved in the plumbing industry for almost four decades, and for the past 12 years he has run his own

homes. He said that electrification of heat was the preferred approach across all four nations of the UK, but this would fail to meet the needs of one million of the 1.7m oil-heated households. With a proposed ban on new oil installations from 2026, Paul said, government must consider alternative methods that will be fair and feasible, and renewable liquid fuels offer a viable way forward. Commenting on the conference,
OFTEC head of public affairs Malcolm Farrow says: “The message from industry at our conference was loud and clear. We’ve demonstrated that HVO is a practical and realistic solution for off-grid decarbonisation with fuel distributors, technicians and existing supply chains ready and waiting to deliver it to homes and businesses across the UK. “Heat pumps have an important role to play, but to make progress quickly in a way that is fair to consumers and protects them from excessive cost, we need government to adopt a more technologyinclusive approach. For harder-totreat homes which could face costs of tens of thousands of pounds to convert, we need to provide a genuine alternative. Our industry has played its part in delivering a renewable liquid fuel solution; it’s time the government provided the policy support needed to roll it out at scale.” For more information on the progress of renewable liquid fuels and the HVO demonstration project, see page 32.

Episode one features Carl, aka The Apprentice Plumber (@the_ apprentice_plumber). He talks about his decision to become a plumbing apprentice as part of his career change later in life. He offers advice on how anyone else who is just starting out can learn from his experiences to get the most out of their apprenticeship.
PLUMBERS IN THE NEWS
◼ A plumber was left with a broken jaw, fractured ribs and lung damage after a customer attacked him over a £50 bill refund. Mahlon Crosdale and his partner had paid £1000 for a plumbing job and handed over £50 for rubbish removal, which he ended up doing himself. Newcastle Crown Court heard when the £50 was not quickly refunded, Cros d a le sent a ser ie s threatening texts. He has been sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years, with rehabilitation requirements and 100 hours unpaid work. ◼ Torquay-based plumber Andrew Cartwright has been jailed for two and a half years by Exeter Crown Court after police found more than a kilo of heroin in his home worth £136,000. When questioned, he said the stash belonged to a friend who had asked to store it at his house, and that he thought it was cannabis. At trial, the judge commented that there appeared to be no financial gain for Cartwright and his involvement in the matter was ‘inexplicable’. ◼ A district council worker who dumped waste belonging to a plumbing firm and ‘gloated about his actions to a colleague’ has been given a suspended prison sentence. Peter Harris, 66, of Kidderminster, was found guilty of two counts of fly-tipping waste that included plumbing materials and builders’ sacks. He was given four months in prison, suspended by 12 months, for each offence and also ordered to pay clean-up costs of £433 and a statutory surcharge.
The second episode sees Hollie, also known as @holliesheating, give her take on starting a plumbing business, advising others on how to navigate the unfamiliar aspects of finances, while still giving customers the best possible service. In episode three, Lee (@ leggytheplumber) looks at his own work/life balance, and explains how he manages his business while still prioritising his mental health. Ceri Heathcote, online content marketing manager at Wavin, says: “Our Van Tips series is a great way to bring our community of tradespeople together and learn more about the issues and challenges they face every day.” The videos can be accessed via YouTube, using the link below. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/09

Online heat loss calculator Installers looking for guidance on conducting heat loss calculations for oil boiler installations can turn to Grant UK, which has introduced a new blog and free eLearning module, which talk engineers through the steps involved. Recent changes to Part L of the Building Regulations mean a full room-by-room heat loss calculation now needs to be carried out before installing an oil or gas boiler. To help with this new step, Grant UK has developed an Oil Boiler Heat Loss Calculator tool, available on the company’s G˚ Portal. In addition, a new blog and eLearning module are also now online which guide installers through the calculator tool and how to use it.
The blog explains how to use the calculator and the purpose of a room-by-room calculation, as context to this process. Meanwhile, the ˚˙-minute eLearning module is available via the Grant eLearning Academy. This on-demand tutorial goes through each of the tabs within the tool, providing an explanation for the data input which installers need to complete. The eLearning module is free to access, so installers can log onto www.grantelearning.com and visit the course catalogue to enrol (new users to the Grant eLearning Academy will need to sign up and create an account using the enrolment key GUKPR˙ˡ˛˙).

Training Update
Technical overview of how heat pumps work
Bathroom experts with loyalty scheme
A new online video training programme has been launched by Stiebel Eltron which aims to support the rising demand for heat pumps. The ‘Heat Pump Pass’ training course, which will take a total of five hours to complete (broken down into 26 segments), is designed to deliver a technical overview of how heat pumps work and covers key considerations for installation. Users can access the training via the company’s website where they will be given a month’s access to complete the flexible free course, making it easy to fit around busy work schedules. The training course is said to be ideal for heating engineers wishing to transition from boiler installation to heat pumps, trainee heating engineers, and existing heat pump engineers wishing to deepen their knowledge of different heat pump technologies. MD Mark McManus comments: “The UK’s transition towards renewable heating solutions has been reflected in the huge rise in demand for heat pumps. We’re committed to investing in growth and development and proud to strengthen
With the launch of Grohe+, a loyalty programme and app from Grohe, installers will be able to access a service package with a number of benefits, as well as training. For example, installers and their customers can benefit from a digital experience hub called Grohe X, an educational resource with content created to educate and inspire. In addition, installation techniques, guidance and maintenance training will be available across all products that support continued professional development. As a quality-approved reference point for homeowners, successful Grohe+ participation will be displayed on the Grohe website. This, says the company, saves time and considers the expectations of consumers who are making more informed purchases. Certified Grohe installers can also offer their customers an extended warranty. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/16

Oil and gas boilers, smart controls
Academy offers female-only training days Female-only training days are now available from water treatment specialist ADEY at the company’s Gloucester Training Academy. The launch of Women Installer Training through the ADEY Academy will focus on hands-on training around the Best Practice approach for water treatment and is designed to encourage more women to take advantage of the company’s training facility, where women currently represent just 3% of attendees. “Women Installer Training is our way of supporting tradeswomen, and hopefully with increased visibility, it will encourage more women to consider a career in the industry,” says marketing director Claire Miller. “As a manufacturer, we believe that we have an important role to play in helping make sure the heating and plumbing workforce is representative.” According to Working Futures 2021, only 1.93% (3283) of plumbing, heating and ventilation engineers are female. Alongside this, interest in the plumbing trade has decreased across the board, with the number of 18-24 year olds searching for a job in the sector currently at just 3%, according to YouGov Omnibus research. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/17

The latest course from OFTEC looks at heat pumps, giving technicians the chance to equip themselves with the skills they need to install a full range of non-gas technologies, from heat pumps to renewable liquid fuels. Working in collaboration with industry experts, the new heat pump training course and assessment package has been developed by a select working group alongside MCS, including Grant UK, Panasonic, Vaillant, Nationwide Training, Cert-Ain Certification and ERS Certification as representatives of seven UK-based accredited certification bodies. The programme covers air source heat pump installation, commissioning, and servicing. Further courses covering design of heat pump systems and ground source heat pump installation, commissioning and servicing are also planned for the near future. Successful technicians can then apply for MCS certification to install heat pumps through government schemes such as the Home Upgrade Grant or Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and they will also be able to self-certify their own installations as being compliant with Building Regulations. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/20
Gain the skills for low temperature systems The LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings and Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems (non-refrigerant circuits) are available at Grant UK’s Devizes-based training centre in Wiltshire. Both courses focus on delivering training to heating professionals who are working with low temperature heating systems, principally heat pumps, with one qualification centred upon the design of such systems, and the other focusing on installing and maintaining the units. For companies or installers who are looking to apply to be MCS certified for Heat Pump Design, Installation or both, they will need to hold one or both of these industry qualifications depending on the MCS certification they want to achieve. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/21

Wool is a natural alternative to fibre glass and rock wool insulation
With recent changes to the Building Regulations, it’s important to understand what this means for heating installations in new and existing homes. Jonny Hancock from NIBE Energy Systems provides an overview.
F
ollowing the introduction of the updated Conservation of Fuel and Power Part L Standard on the 15th of June, all new homes must produce less CO2 emissions, and some of the changes will extend to existing buildings too. This uplift will ease in heat pump specifications for zero carbon-ready buildings by ensuring that homes built today either have heat pumps installed or are future-proofed to easily adopt them in the coming years. The regulations tackle performance through assessing the primary energy demand, carbon intensity and fabric energy efficiency standard of the building.
As a heating engineer that must calculate heat loss, it seems to me that both the UK government and Insulate Britain are getting the insulation for properties very wrong. Why? Embodied energy. If we are going to use rock wool or fibre glass, we need a lot more gas to melt the rock or sand. If we use polystyrene, we need a lot more oil. Either way, these are products we are trying to use less of, not more, and these are the very things that are massively contributing to global warming. So what’s the solution? We have natural insulators and often they are by-products of other industries. We can use waste products such as sawdust, straw, shredded paper, feathers and wool.
The key changes To pave the way for heat pumps, the regulations now state that 55°C is the maximum flow temperature for all new and replacement heating systems as they operate at lower flow temperatures compared to traditional heating systems. This will not only lower running costs for customers through optimising heating appliance efficiency but will also minimise damage to the pipework through reducing corrosion. A win-win for everyone, even those with gas boilers. It’s worth bearing in mind that this might mean that you’ll need to consider replacing radiators, but it will make it cheaper to install a heat pump in the future if you’re not doing so today. In addition to the lower flow temperatures, new or replaced heating systems must be combined with thermostatic room control in each room. This requirement is applicable to all heating systems including heat pumps. In certain circumstances this can be achieved via heat zoning, such as in open plan dwellings where the living area is more than 70% of the total dwelling floor area. For properties with over 150m2 floor area, a minimum of two independently controlled heating circuits are also needed.
The problem with wood, paper and straw is that they are very flammable. If they get wet, they can rot, and as they rot they can get hot, and if they get hot they can self-combust. Feathers contain keratin, a natural protein which is lightweight, insulating, water repellent, and biodegradable. The UK likes to eat a lot of chicken. Globally we kill over 50 billion a year, that’s a lot of feathers, so why not put those natural insulators to good use? It would no doubt need to be treated to protect it from insects, but there is certainly no shortage of supply. Wool seems to be outstanding. It is surprisingly hard to burn and it contains lanolin which repels moisture. It would need some form of protection from insects, especially moths, but we can have an ongoing supply of it. Sheep can be sheared year after year and some might be taken out to be added to the food chain. I am told hogget (older than lamb) tastes better than lamb, so the longer we keep the animal, the more wool we would get. We live in a country that is ideal for rearing sheep, so instead of subsidising gas and oil, why not support sheep farmers? Our historic wealth is partly based on the wool industry dating back to the 1700s. Let’s get it going again and help reduce household bills whilst reducing our environmental impact. automatically adjusts the temperature, humidity and CO2 level inside their home – or they can adjust them manually through the myUplink app to suit their needs. Our smart controls have been designed with our heat pumps and customers at the centre, which mean they integrate seamlessly into any installation. Our SRV 10 wireless radiator thermostats allow customers to obtain a comfortable indoor temperature while reducing energy consumption by only heating rooms when needed. Being battery powered, it is easy to install too. By adding these to a system, you’ll also meet the new requirement for thermostatic room control in each room. The wireless radiator thermostat has a M30X1.5 connection, and a Danfoss RA adapter is included so that it fits most heating systems. The SRV works with all our NIBE S-Series heat pumps, providing even more precise control. Our whole suite of accessories, including electronic, temperature and smart controls, are easy to install and can help you achieve compliance by creating room or climate zones throughout the home without the need for third party products.

Bathroom Design 23
Six big design trends your customers desire Minimalism, nature, peace and functionality are on high on the wish list of many customers, and this calls for clean lines, hidden storage and subtle features. Parv Sangera, MD of The Bathroom Showroom at City Plumbing highlights six ways to create the perfect bathroom for 2022.
D
esigners, suppliers and installers are recognising that the role of the bathroom has undergone an evolution and installers are having to think harder to incorporate style into an area of practicality. So what are the six big trends?
23.indd 1
The ‘outdoor feel’ is very popular in new bathroom designs, and ceiling mounted shower heads are ideal for creating the rain shower effect, providing an aesthetically pleasing and compact display. Wall-mounted taps also create a luxurious and long-lasting impression, as do wall-hung toilets, which are also ideal for small bathrooms as they provide more floor space. Whilst clean lines make fantastic aesthetics, these fixtures can also be a headache for designers and installers. With this high-end trend, it is important to keep accessibility, feasibility, and practical designs in mind to match performance with desirable looks.
Across sectors, worldwide, the behaviour change that has accompanied the pandemic has placed far greater emphasis on hygiene. As a result, practical elements to aid cleaning need to hold just as much importance as style. With smooth surfaces, detachable fittings, and smart technology, there is a clear trend toward low maintenance bathrooms that cut the time and effort of cleaning duties. Hygiene has become such an important aspect of the bathroom that specialist brands and their suppliers have begun developing hygiene improvements alongside delivering sophisticated bathroom designs. Many are turning to innovative technology to limit the spread of germs, creating surfaces that repel residue and non-touch taps to reduce the spread of germs. Durable, eco-friendly and stylish, non-touch taps offer both a hygienic and stylish addition to any bathroom.

2. Going green Few design elements are more powerful than colour. It affects our mood and can even capture our personality. This year we can expect to see a shift towards darker bathrooms, and there is growing consumer demand for green variations, with online searches for sage and forest green booming over the last year. Green is a versatile colour that fits well with both modern and traditional bathrooms and is the ideal hue to refresh and encourage positive wellbeing without being overpowering. The colour also fits well against brass and copper finishes. Introducing colour into a bathroom is much easier, with many new fixtures and fittings being produced in a wider variety of colour finishes. To add some grandeur, complement the dark green hues with earthy wood, splashes of light, and polished metals.
4. Open spaces
5. Cleaning aids
1. Japandi On the surface, Japan and Scandinavia don’t seem to have much in common, but when it comes to aesthetics, they both favour minimalistic design, natural elements and comfort, which has led to the growing popularity of the ‘Japandi’ style. The clean, no-clutter look makes Japandi ideal for designing bathrooms. It ensures every surface flows harmoniously, and encourages functionality with plenty of hidden storage solutions. With more homeowners looking for eco-friendly designs, the sustainability aspect of Japandi makes it even more popular. Neutral colours and peaceful palettes typically complement the furnishings while natural elements such as stone, textiles, wood, and marble are the key elements of Japandi interior design.
found in its functionality. Freestanding baths complement this trend by giving a wetroom an effortless look. Vibrant tiles can transform a walk-in shower, and extra floor space encourages many possibilities for furnishings.

3. All-inclusive An ageing population, coupled with an increased awareness of mental and physical wellbeing is changing the way we think about the bathroom. This has encouraged a trend toward greater inclusivity which will see individuals expanding the usability of their bathrooms. Wetrooms and walk-in showers are fast becoming the bathroom of choice, bidding farewell to the traditional
cramped bathtub or no-room-tomove shower cubicle. Showers and baths can easily be reconfigured into accessible and usable dual spaces and two-in-one solutions that appeal both aesthetically and practically. With the addition of clean lines, sealed edges, and easy-wipe surfaces to finish, these bathrooms can be the essence of practicality and convenience. While this trend is driven by a need for accessibility, enjoyment can still be
Many bathroom manufacturers and suppliers continue to ‘sell the dream’ – transforming bathrooms into luxurious, exotic spa experiences. Despite the limitations of customers’ budgets, plumbing systems and, crucially, available space, the industry is finding clever ways to make the spa experience a little more feasible. As specialty features that create a spalike retreat have now become a priority for most home buyers. More consumers are wanting to incorporate designs that are minimalist and encourage escapism while still retaining personality, style and hints of luxury. Expect to see luxury finishes such as mosaic tile, Euro style shower doors featuring thicker glass, minimal framing, stylish hardware, and beautiful low maintenance granite or quartz countertops combined with undermount sinks – effectively providing a bridge between dreams and reality. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/33

Bathroom Design
Classic designs which are close to home A growing number of UK consumers are looking to combine practical bathroom solutions with elegant, classic designs, as well as seeking British-made products – James Stevenson from Imperial Bathrooms explains more.
B
athroom design is increasingly becoming a blend of the beautiful and practical as the home improvement and wellness market continue to develop and customers seek to create a timeless, restorative ‘home spa’ experience. With this in mind, we are noting a renewed appreciation of classic bathroom styles when it comes to creating a deluxe feel and a long-term investment in the ‘forever’ home. End users are also showing a desire to support and rediscover British interior design following Brexit. British interior design is defined by exquisite, handcrafted details and I believe this admiration has stemmed from end users placing a greater emphasis on product origin in their pursuit for superior quality and design. Strong and wellcommunicated brand stories are also helping end users to better understand design processes, sustainable materials and product guarantees. In addition, both consumers and retailers can appreciate that sourcing from a supplier closer to home reduces the number of potential challenges and snags to a project, and consequently causes fewer headaches for project management.
Period style As provenance and workmanship becomes increasingly important, consumers are seeing huge value in British-made ceramicware with popular architectural styles still embracing bygone eras like Edwardian, Victorian and Art Deco-style. We are noting distinct period-style basins, WCs and high-definition baths are standing their ground against more contemporary designs. There’s no doubt that

consumers have developed a taste for bolder bathroom ceramics, with high gloss finishes and ornate detailing being used to elevate the luxe-level and accentuate the furniture, brassware and accessories. The overriding trend continues to be ‘the bolder, the better’ when it comes to colours and textures. We’ve noticed an increase in the number of homeowners opting for more unusual brassware finishes and for painting freestanding bath exteriors in shades that boost its style as a design focal point. Another important trend is that of co-ordinating colours and finishes. Consumers have a heightened understanding of what works when it comes to design and are keen to create a polished look by choosing the same finish for their brassware as for their accessories.
Practical solutions With a greater number of family members spending time at home, and with the home needing to become more things to far more people, practical issues have risen to the fore and proved a challenge for many. Now, when designing a bathroom, end users are thinking of these aspects and prioritising hardworking storage, and in many cases designing a scheme around some fantastic looking furniture as a design centrepiece. With homeowners realising that the pieces they choose need to work harder than ever, being able to offer customers a broad portfolio of vanity unit designs in configurations to suit all spaces is absolutely vital. However, sanitaryware sales remain in favour of classic white designs, as no matter how vast the colour wheel, a bathroom suite needs to remain timeless through changing trends and home ownership. Alongside the trend for elegant bathrooms inspired by late 19th century and 20th century designs, the industrial look is also well established within bathroom interiors and is developing in two key style directions. One draws on a contemporary, paredback quality with streamlined fixtures and fittings against concrete and exposed brickwork.
t The Carlyon Roseland Furniture Collection by Imperial, featuring a wallhung vanity unit with Wenge finish and Westminster bath shower mixer
The second is inspired by the UK’s repurposing of brownfield sites such as commercial buildings like factories and maltings, which are transformed into desirable homes with authentic design features. As original features are increasingly preserved and enhanced, we are seeing an eclectic hybrid of traditional bathroom elements with a contemporary palette, such as the juxtaposition of modern subway tiles with black grout and period-style taps. I think this new appreciation of our industrial heritage will lead to even more creativity for our bathroom designers as they see the potential for combining style and utility in every aspect of the bathroom and shower zone. This will also be reinforced by homeowners’ desires to personalise and optimise their homes to add value, comfort and efficiency so they can enjoy the best of both worlds with ceramicware, taps and shower enclosures which celebrate classic British style with the best in 21st century convenience.
More options Research shows that an en suite is becoming a key requirement for house hunters alongside the traditional family bathroom, indicating how much the status of this room has transformed in recent times. We are definitely in the midst of a ‘bathroom revolution’ as consumers are in a position to have a dedicated shower room/en-suite or ground floor bathroom in addition to the main bathroom, rather than opting for one or the other. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/34

Bathroom Design
Expand horizons with waterproof panels The bathroom continues to be a popular room in the home for upgrades and renovations, and while tiles may have always been the go-to for installers and their customers, this doesn’t mean they’re always the best choice – so says Scott Beattie at Fibo, who makes the case for waterproof wall panels.
T
he bathroom is no longer a purely functional space – it is now being designed to create a contemporary, welcoming and relaxing room. This means selecting the right materials for the job, ones that provide the premium aesthetics but also the ease of installation and longlasting durability. For years, tiles have always been the standard choice for wetrooms and bathrooms. However, this is all changing. Waterproof wall panels can be a great alternative to tiles, delivering numerous benefits for both the installer and the consumer.

it’s clear to see that waterproof wall panels come out on top. In fact, they can be up to five times faster to install compared to tiles. This impressive timesaving is due to a number of factors, such as the fact that wall panels are capable of being fitted directly on top of existing tiles, with minimal surface preparation required. Alternatively, they are also suitable for installation on plasterboard or stud partitioning.
Scott Beattie
Managing director of Fibo
Waterproof panels can be up to five times faster to install compared to tiles because they can be fitted directly on top of existing tiles or on plasterboard
Simple and durable Only basic carpentry tools and skills are needed, with the panels simply requiring to be cut and then clicked or glued into position. With experienced tilers becoming increasingly sought after, and this demand potentially leading to project delays and increased costs, waterproof wall panels could be the perfect solution. What’s more, they are easy to transport, manoeuvre and store, with less chance of chips, cracks or other damage occurring, as can often be the case with tiles.
Another factor for consideration is durability. Ensuring high quality materials are being used and recommended to customers is essential, as installing sub-standard products could have a negative effect on your business’s reputation. Not only that, but it could also lead to costly call-backs and dissatisfied customers further down the line.
Going the distance Often manufactured from timber plywood, wall panels can be incredibly strong, durable and long-lasting. Look for wall panels that feature a tongue and groove joining system, such as Fibo’s innovative Aqualock, helping you to easily achieve a strong and waterproof join. In fact, many wall panel systems are available with a 10- or 15-year guarantee, providing both you and your customers with peace of mind and assurances of performance. We take this even further, offering a 25-year warranty on all panels. What’s more, long after construction has finished, wall panels are renowned for being easier to clean and maintain. One of the key contributing factors for this is the absence of grout, a common area for deterioration and one that could harbour mould and harmful bacteria. With the transition from functional to beautiful, appearance is everything. Fortunately, there is an equally
wide range of styles, decors and colours available on the wall panel market, meaning your customers will be spoilt for choice. With wall panel manufacturers taking inspiration from current interior design trends, you’ll find decors inspired by biophilic design, with green and blue tones and authentic wood effects; urban and industrial chic, such as concrete and metro brick patterns; and even some re-invented classics. All this helps to feed into this idea of the bathroom being a chance to get creative with the colours and styles.
A take on tiles For those not willing to move wholly away from tiles, there are also numerous realistic tileeffect designs available on the market, complete with imitation grout lines. Some manufacturers take this one step further, routering in the grout lines to create a 3D effect – the result being a wall panel that both looks and feels like tiles. When it comes to bathroom installations, tiles have long been the assumed choice. However, it’s clear in the industry that it is time for a change, with waterproof wall panels becoming increasingly popular. Indeed, with numerous benefits for both installers and their clients, it’s clear to see why they are presenting such an attractive alternative. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/35

Bathroom Design
The key to tranquility The bathroom space is evolving from a practical place to one that provides a small reprieve from the demands and tensions of the modern world. Chris Billingham from Methven discusses how installers can help to create a soothing oasis without sacrificing performance or energy efficiency.
F
or decades, bathrooms have been an integral element of the modern home and their design has evolved significantly in recent years, driven by health, wellbeing, accessibility, comfort, sustainability and many other factors. Alongside design comes the expectation of performance and more recently water efficiency, leaving installers with a long list of items to check off in order to provide the complete package. So, how can professionals support homeowners in transforming their bathroom into their very own haven, whilst still meeting the functional requirements expected of the space, delivering the desired performance and without having a significant impact
Making a splash with new Wave Collection UK showering spaces specialist Lakes has launched the Wave Collection, described as a stylish and practical range. The Wave Collection comes in a contemporary silver finish as standard and, with installation flexibility in mind, includes hinged, quadrant, slider, and bi-fold door options, as well as a side panel

The way fixtures and accessories are now designed is one factor that influences modern bathroom aesthetics. With today’s bathroom products, there are many more modern and minimalist designs and a plethora of different coloured finishes. Changes such as the inclusion of a double vanity unit, brushed gold fittings, or a large showerhead can change an ordinary bathroom into a place of relaxation and peace, giving it a ‘spa like’ feel. For example, by swapping the showerhead for a multi-function, high performance one, such as our Satinjet Kaha Handset, it is possible to completely transform a showering routine into a luxurious experience, without the associated price tag. By offering complementary products from the same manufacturer, it is possible to achieve the highest standards in performance and style throughout every aspect of the bathroom. At Methven, for example, we have introduced advancements
According to research, 82% of British homebuyers, particularly the younger generation, would pay more for eco-friendly products. Selecting water-efficient fixtures and fittings will not only help conserve the nation’s
water supply but will also help households save money on their future water bills. Offering water-saving products and establishing long-term approaches to water conservation are achievable and much-needed steps which can be taken by tradespeople to go some way to accomplishing a more sustainable future. Installers should now be looking for ways to meet the need for an increasing desire for water efficient products while still bearing in mind the design requirements of the whole bathroom, so that homeowners end up with a flexible, stylish bathroom space that can be utilised on a daily basis as a space for relaxation. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/36
which can be combined with the hinged, slider and bi-fold doors. The hinged, quadrants, slider and side panel are also available in a matt black finish as part of the Onyx Collection, so customers can choose whatever suits their personal style and taste. The Wave Collection focuses on the use of 8mm glass, said to be reassuringly sturdy, while minimising weight to save resources. The strong frames mean there is no compromise in the quality or performance of the showering space, while retaining simplicity and ease of
handling for installers when carrying and manoeuvring it into position in confined spaces. Lakes MD Bev Brown says: “Attention to detail is important for many homeowners, which is why our Wave Collection has been developed with precision engineering, allowing customers to achieve the perfect balance of functionality and style. The option of Wave in matt black gives customers even more choice and freedom to design their dream showering space.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/37

Renewable Energy
HVO: a viable alternative The government’s preferred method of decarbonising domestic heat is the mass rollout of heat pumps, but what about the homes off the gas grid, which present a number of barriers to adoption? OFTEC’s Malcolm Farrow says there is another way.
I
t’s becoming increasingly evident that the offgrid sector is one of the most challenging to decarbonise. To date, government policy has largely focused on heat pumps as the preferred technology and is trying to make them more accessible. However, if we want our green ambitions to succeed, we’re going about this the wrong way. We need to instead recognise the current economic landscape and work backwards to provide solutions which are practical and affordable. This can only be achieved with a technology-neutral approach. The government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy sets out how the UK can achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The proposals stated that from 2026 off-gas grid homes will no longer be able to install a new replacement fossil fuel oil boiler when their existing one breaks down. Instead, in most cases, they will be expected to install a heat pump.
Burden on off-grid
While there is a legitimate question of fairness in asking oil homes to transition nine years earlier than those on mains gas, which can replace their system like-for-like up until 2035, OFTEC recognises the important role of heat pumps. In fact, we’re actively supporting their rollout with the launch of new training courses to equip technicians with the skills they need to install the technology. However, not every home is going to be suitable for a heat pump without making changes that are likely to be very costly and disruptive. Many off-grid homes fall in this category and these households shouldn’t be forced to adopt the technology and foot the bill. The government’s approach is to try to make heat pumps more affordable (they currently cost around £11,000). The ambition is a drop in price of between 25% and 50% by 2025 but, with rising inflation, it’s hard to see how this can be achieved. We’re also very unlikely to see the economies of scale achieved in rural areas, with diverse detached property types requiring bespoke solutions compared to terraced homes.

2026
Modern oil boilers can be modified to run on HVO for around £500 as part of a routine service
the Heat and Building Strategy’s proposed date to ban all installations of new replacement fossil fuel oil boilers
Consumer driven
Combined with expensive and disruptive energy efficiency upgrades, some off-grid households could be looking at a total bill of over £20,000. The associated Boiler Upgrade Scheme will only make a small dent in this and, at its current funding, will reach just a small number of homes unless more money is invested. The country is still recovering from the pandemic and now faces years of uncertainly with the cost of living crisis pushing household finances to their limit. There is very little appetite from consumers for expensive investments in green heating, either through their wallet or public expenditure. That’s why we need to step back and rethink our approach. Instead of starting with a preferred technology and trying to make it more financially viable in the current landscape in every application, we must focus on what will be acceptable to the consumer and then offer a range of appropriate solutions.
Pragmatism wins
This means being pragmatic in recognising the new economic landscape and adopting a technology-neutral approach to off-grid decarbonisation – one that focuses on achieving the best outcomes for consumers and our wider net zero ambitions. If these two goals are met then the choice of heating system itself is irrelevant. That’s why, alongside heat pumps, renewable liquid fuels such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) need to be part of the mix so households have a genuine choice for their home. Our joint demonstration project, run in partnership with UKIFDA, fuel distributors and technicians, has proved the viability of the fossil-free, sustainably sourced fuel. Over
100 oil heated properties – from schools to churches and pubs – have successfully converted to HVO and reduced their emissions by 88% as a result.
Quick and painless
For the consumer, transitioning to HVO is quick, simple and cost effective following a £500 boiler conversion which can be completed as part of a routine service. There’s also no requirement for expensive energy efficiency improvements or system modifications. For the government, it provides a quick win with an immediate drop in off-grid carbon emissions. The reality is the wide-scale adoption of low carbon heating will only be achieved with the support of consumers. Every property is different, so choice, be it a heat pump, renewable liquid fuel or biomass, is going to be paramount. The British Energy Security Strategy said as much, stating that: “Our homes are our castles – people want choices regarding how they improve them”. This was reflected in our survey of over 4000 oil households which found that 98% want the option of switching to renewable liquid fuels. The current singular focus on heat pumps puts many consumers at risk of high prices, the government at risk of paying increased subsidies to bring down costs, and our net zero ambitions at risk if the move to the technology stalls.
Technology-inclusive
Our industry has demonstrated the viability of renewable liquid fuels and it’s time the government took a more technology-inclusive approach to create a healthy, diverse market for low carbon heating fuelled by consumer choice. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/45

Light Commercial Heating
Helping hotels go low carbon The hospitality industry is under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the industry can play a part in enabling them to meet ambitious targets. James Harman from Mitsubishi Electric explains more.
W
ith the government’s recent Build Back Greener strategy setting out proposals for the decarbonisation of the UK economy by 2050, businesses and consumers alike are now calling for significant carbon reductions to be made over the next few years. From the government’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) to recent changes to the Building Regulations, building managers and owners of commercial buildings are increasingly having to adapt their spaces in line with strict legislative requirements to meet ambitious targets for net zero. A report by the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has estimated that the hotel industry will need to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 66% by 2030 in order to reach current carbon reduction targets. To achieve this goal, senior decision-makers in the hospitality industry will need to put energy efficiency at the heart of their building design, while also continuing to manage guest comfort, running costs and long-term maintenance regimes. Heating, cooling and ventilation equipment can play a key role in this shift towards energy-efficient design. By deploying the right technology, installers and project managers can reduce costs, boost performance, and increase energy efficiency – ensuring that guests have a comfortable, low-carbon stay for years to come. Upgrading equipment in the search for greater energyefficiency in hotels is also facing increasingly stricter legislation. Those involved in the design and operation of commercial buildings will already be aware of the regulations in place designed to minimise the emission of F-gases from air conditioning

CUT TO THE CHASE Building managers are under increasing pressure to adapt to strict requirements to meet emissions targets HVAC equipment can play a key role in the shift to energyefficient design Upgrading to Hybrid VRF systems can remove the need to install expensive leak detection Energy can be saved by controlling and monitoring temperatures in individual rooms The right technology can ensure that hotels are protected against future climate targets
The Haymarket Hub hotel, an upmarket boutique hotel in the heart of Edinburgh, recently chose a Mitsubishi Electric Hybrid VRF air conditioning system with the HBC (hybrid branch controller) boxes strategically placed in surrounding laundry cupboards – this minimised the possibility of noise disruption, while also providing easy access for ongoing service and maintenance
equipment through leak detection, reduction, repair and recovery. It’s important to be aware of how these changing regulations will affect the systems being installed. For example, regulations such as BS EN378 mean that you may need to add leak detection equipment – which can be expensive to install and maintain.
Hybrid solution This is where upgrading to Hybrid Variable Refrigerant Flow (Hybrid VRF) systems can make such a difference, as water replaces refrigerant as the medium used to transfer heating and cooling around the building, removing the need to install leak detection in occupied spaces. Not only can Hybrid VRF help remove the need for leak detection, refrigerants like R32 can also lower the system’s total Global Warming Potential (GWP). Hybrid VRF also reduces the overall amount of R32 needed, which is particularly important for ensuring that these systems comply with the future phasing out of F-gases. This
will help ensure that your systems run efficiently in the long-term and aren’t affected by future regulations. Other considerations when choosing a system include considering whether equipment is both flexible and able to provide different temperatures for each room, ensuring that every guest is comfortable during their stay. This can also help ensure that the system is able to automate control, monitoring and reporting, helping to reduce the workload of busy facilities managers. In addition to tighter regulatory requirements, consumers are also becoming much more aware of their personal impact on the environment. People are becoming much more greenminded and the hotel industry isn’t immune to this shift. While this has been reflected in the increasing popularity of in-room signs allowing guests to forego the usual turn down service in order to alleviate their impact on the environment, hotels could also face increasing pressure to maintain their internal environments in the near future. This is where it can help to install technology capable of monitoring individual rooms. These help to avoid waste and can offset cooling in one area with heating in another area, to maximise overall energy efficiency.
Minimising disruption Closing off parts of a hotel for building work can not only have a significant impact on earnings, but also a knock-on effect on guest satisfaction. Therefore, keeping disruption to an absolute minimum must be a priority. This means that choosing a system that can be installed in stages is a must – especially if work needs to be carried out during busy periods. It’s important to consider whether a system is flexible enough to be installed floorby-floor. This can help to minimise disruption while maximising the number of rooms available to guests. This will allow hotels to stay open during the installation and give hotel managers the flexibility of being able to ringfence the rooms they can keep open while the works are happening. What’s more, it’s important that air conditioning systems minimise any noise disruption for guests. As hotels and the wider hospitality industry is increasingly faced with strict legislation and ambitious targets for net zero, it is imperative that building and facilities managers adapt their spaces accordingly. By selecting the right technology, project managers and installers can ensure that hotels are future-proofed against climate targets for years to come. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/52

Light Commercial Heating
Hands up for saving energy in our schools Energy efficiency and reliability remain key credentials for heating systems in a wide range of applications – especially schools. Emiliano Gabrielli from ATAG Commercial, advises on some of the key things to consider when choosing boilers for educational environments.
A
t the time of writing, there are currently 32,163 schools in the UK, with each one requiring adequate levels of heating and hot water for its students and members of staff. The National Education Union (NEU) advises that the temperature in classrooms should be at least 18°C, with heating and hot water a legal requirement in all schools. As a result, educational buildings reportedly spend as much as £63k a month on energy (with £13k of this on gas), so it is imperative they use the latest light commercial boilers to benefit from reliable, futureproof and energy efficient heating systems. As energy prices rise, schools are understandably eager to find methods and technologies capable of reducing running costs. Fortunately, gas boiler manufacturers have made significant advances in design and engineering over recent
42.indd 1
years – especially in terms of light commercial wall hung and the latest floor standing units. Indeed, boiler and heat exchanger technology has evolved to maximise heat transfer and efficiency, without compromising reliability, while also reducing emissions to incredibly low levels.
In the balance
Emiliano Gabrielli
Country manager at ATAG Commercial
q The 180kW XL-F floor standing
boiler from ATAG Commercial is providing a reliable source of heating and hot water for Monmouth School for Girls in Wales. All models benefit from an impressive footprint-to-power ratio which, measuring just 1.8m high, including the flow and return manifolds, enables them to be fitted in small spaces and plant rooms
In order to meet a school’s heating and hot water demands, boilers should be flexible yet powerful, with an equal balance between maximising efficiency and minimising downtime in the event of servicing or repair. While it is relatively simple to source a boiler that claims to meet all these requirements on paper, specifying a product that merely ‘ticks all the right boxes’ does not mean it will achieve the desired results. After all, there are a number of other important factors to bear in mind. The heat exchanger, for example, is a component of paramount importance, especially the material from which it is made. While there are aluminium options available, here at ATAG Commercial, we firmly endorse stainless steel as the heat exchanger material of choice – particularly given its long-term performance and reliability credentials, especially when used as part of a high efficiency heating system. Thanks to its unique properties, stainless steel is able to remain smooth, even when there is sulphuric and nitric acid (from flue gas condensate) present in the system water. The material can tolerate any corrosive effect and maintain a long-lasting level of operational efficiency when compared to aluminium. This is beneficial in any type of heating system, but especially commercial ones – such as those used in schools – due to the volatile environment in which the heat exchanger has to operate.
When assessing a school or university for the most suitable light commercial boiler, size is another key factor to consider – specifically in terms of how much space is available inside a plantroom. Some units have a big physical footprint and can occupy a large area. Fortunately, the latest commercial boilers are lightweight and compact, allowing multiple units to be fitted on the same system. Doing so also maximises energy efficiency, thanks to improved turndown ratios and modulation capacity.
Joined-up thinking In addition, cascade arrangements of two to eight boilers are also becoming more common in schools. An effective cascade strategy ensures reliability of ignition, while allowing the boilers to continue operating to their full potential. Furthermore, boilers containing two heat exchangers inside a single unit – such as our XL-F and XL-W models – boast the advantage of built-in backup within one unit, as each heat exchanger can operate independently of the other. Built-in redundancy within a commercial boiler of this type also greatly benefits a school installation, as they cannot afford to be without heating or hot water. In other words, students and staff can still go about their day comfortable and warm, while the school does not need to be shut down in the event of a boiler requiring maintenance or repair.
Complete system Of course, if a school’s boilers are to continue operating at their maximum ability, it is vital to consider the heating system as a whole. For instance, if a new boiler is fitted onto an older system, there is a chance that debris and dirty water will be present in the pipes. Should this get transferred into the new boiler, its efficiency and
functionality will obviously be compromised. To prevent such circumstances from occurring, boilers should be augmented by effective system air/dirt separation. This ensures any contaminants are removed from the system water, enabling the boiler and all associated components to continue to operate without issue.
Taking control Now, when condensing boilers have been fitted inside a school, there should also be an equally efficient control system in place. The latest commercial heating controls can manage a building’s heating requirements across different areas at the same time. For example, advanced digital thermostats allow boilers to deliver and maintain constant levels of heat without fluctuation, while also working in conjunction with outdoor temperature sensors for optimum efficiency. ‘Holiday mode’ settings also prevent any energy from being wasted during vacation periods, when a school is left unoccupied for a period of time. These ‘shutdown’ periods are also an excellent time to conduct annual inspections, servicing and maintenance – which is vital for school heating systems. After all, it significantly reduces the risk of any unwanted failures, while ensuring consistent levels of efficiency and performance. So, in order for schools to have reliable, energy efficient and cost-effective heating and hot water, it makes sense to install the latest light commercial boilers. As long as they consist of high quality components and remain well-serviced and maintained, energy consumption and fuel bills should be kept to a minimum – which is great news for schools from both a financial and sustainability perspective. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/53

Seamless switch to higher efficiency Updates to Approved Document L of the Building Regulations will create a bit of a learning curve for both installers and any businesses looking to upgrade their plant. Andy Green from Baxi explains more.
A
s updates to Approved Document L of Building Regulations ruling out non-condensing direct-fired water heaters come into force, the hot water industry will be instrumental in ensuring a seamless switch to higher efficiency condensing water heaters.
New rules
Under the revised regulations, all direct-fired water heaters must now achieve a minimum heat generator seasonal efficiency of 91% (GCV) for natural gas and 92% (GCV) for
LPG. For indirect-fired water heaters, the minimum heat generator seasonal efficiency is set at 91% (GCV) for both natural gas and LPG. The new requirements apply to both existing and new non-domestic building stock.
No more straight swaps
Effectively, the uplift ends the option to carry out like-for-like non-condensing water heater replacements in the vast majority of non-domestic buildings in favour of higher efficiency condensing units. The changes are part of the government’s roadmap to help the UK move towards its net zero target by 2050 by improving the energy efficiency of existing nondomestic buildings. The valuable energy-saving benefits to end users from upgrading to condensing water heaters, which are on average up to 20% more efficient than non-condensing models, are clear. The move will help mitigate soaring energy bills while reducing carbon and NOx emissions for a more sustainable installation – particularly when combined with heat pumps to
Redesigned boilers save significant time on installation Built with the installer in mind, the Condens 7000 WP from Bosch Commercial & Industrial can offer up to 60% timesaving when fitting, compared to its predecessor, the Worcester Bosch GB162 V2. This is said to be the result of a new frame kit design, simple installation steps with minimal tools required, and an easily accessible PCB. Outputs include 50, 65, 85, 100, 125 and 145kW. Other benefits and features of the Condens 7000 WP include Low Class 6 NOx and 20% hydrogen blend, plus a new touchscreen display for faster commissioning and fault-finding. The boiler also offers flexible control strategies for Building Management System connection, MEC Remote connection, standard interface or third-party controls. The range is available as either a single boiler or a cascade pack (up

to 860kW), which suits a wide variety of system outputs and hydraulic requirements. Cascading lets the installation achieve higher outputs without using more space on the premises and provides customers with peace of mind that heat will still be available even when a boiler needs to be serviced. The series is suitable for larger domestic properties as well as commercial, hybrid and

CUT TO THE CHASE Higher minimum efficiency standards rule out like-for-like swaps of non-condensing units Upgrading to a condensing water heater could offer an average 20% efficiency uplift Revised calculations could point to the need for a smaller water heater More forward planning can help to ensure that a building doesn’t fall into an emergency situation, with no hot water
communal solutions. It is also suitable for small spaces, with outputs up 570kW achievable in a space as small as 1m². Simon Tarr, national projects director at Bosch Commercial & Industrial, explains that the new model is based on reducing complexity at each step of the product journey. He comments: “When specifying, each pack contains all the base components required, sitting under one part number. This enables installers to easily receive a quotation from their local merchant. “While obtaining customer feedback during our research and development phase, we saw an installer on average assembling a two-boiler cascade in less than 20 mins on their first attempt! The installation is very intuitive and shows a real evolution to cascade frames.” To streamline the process and achieve even more timesaving benefits, Bosch Commercial has also created an online precommissioning checklist where installers can book commissioning directly through the manufacturer. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/55
deliver more economical heat without compromising on peak hot water demands. However, given that factors like flueing and condensate arrangements will need to be taken into consideration and assessed on a project-by-project basis, it’s important to encourage businesses to plan ahead. Taking action now will help protect their operations in the future and avoid potentially costly, extended downtime and disruption. Even on the few and far between projects where exemptions to the stricter efficiency standards apply, forward planning is essential. Early engagement will be critical if contractors are to ensure that the Building Control Body is satisfied with the recommendation and avoid any risk of censure.
Preparation is key
Putting in place proactive asset management, regular condition surveys, and robust upgrade programmes will all help facilitate this, efficiently optimising plant performance while allowing businesses to budget ahead. Energy savings aside, the transition to condensing water heaters also brings an opportunity to reassess current hot water requirements, especially in buildings where occupancy and energy usage
has changed in recent years. Ultimately, the revised calculations could point to a smaller water heater now being required, which would reduce both initial capital expenditure and longer-term running costs.
Carrot and stick
There may even be the option to relocate the plant – to the rooftop or outside – to make better use of space, perhaps creating new offices or hotel rooms. The many carrots to be gained from this latest governmental stick are evident. But across the industry – from designers and specifiers to facilities managers, contractors and manufacturers – we must actively encourage increased forward planning to avoid buildings being left in an emergency situation with no hot water supply. Experienced manufacturers have prepared for the changes, with many expanding their high efficiency condensing water heater ranges as well as offering customer awareness training and free site visits to assist with sizing and recommend the most appropriate solutions. Working together, we can help ensure a smooth transition to a more sustainable and futureproof hot water system that meets all project and legislative requirements. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/54
DHW on demand with instantaneous water heaters ADplus from commercial hot water specialist Adveco is a range of high-power gas-fired condensing water heaters. The three variants, with 70, 115 and 140kW rated heat output, each feature an integrated 120-litre stainless steel water storage tank instantly providing continuous and on-demand domestic hot water (DHW). Heat is provided by the patented Fecralloy premix burner, fed by a consistent balanced air/gas ratio at each point of turndown. The high modulation ratio results in high combustion
efficiency with ultra-low NOX (Class 6 appliance at 27 mg/kWh) and CO2 emissions (19ppm). A built-in flue back preventer on the combustion circuit prevents possible flue gas recirculation between different exchangers. The 115 and 140kW ADplus variants offer two high-quality heat exchangers. Constructed from a corrosive-resistant continuous run of AISI 316Ti titanium-stabilised stainless steel, these provide balanced and highly efficient operation, and built-in redundancy. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/56

Vans & Racking
Advice on cutting fuel in day-today use As pump prices keep rising, there are ways to keep your fuel consumption down by altering the way you drive, according to fuelGenie, which has issued guidance to benefit van drivers. Cost-effective vehicle maintenance and changing driver behaviour can drastically reduce fuel consumption, says the fuel card provider.
Deflation detriment For instance, underinflated tyres are one of the main reasons for less miles to the gallon, and it has been estimated that if all four are underinflated by 10psi then it can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 10% because of the greater drag being caused.
Other vehicle maintenance tips to reduce fuel consumption include correct wheel alignment, plus regular vehicle servicing.
Attitude adjustment Meanwhile, changing driving attitudes behind the wheel can also have a significant
positive benefit in reducing fuel consumption. This includes making small changes such as not accelerating too fast, avoiding aggressive driving, braking too sharply and removing any unwanted objects from the vehicle to lighten the weight.
End the idling Further ways to improve fuel economy include avoiding idling and using vehicle stop/ start technology where possible, plus reducing the aircon, heated windscreens and any other electrical usage as much as possible.
Anticipating the road conditions and keeping moving where possible together with avoiding coming to a complete stop will also help save fuel. Managing director Robert Pieczka says: “The financial squeeze looks set to only get worse so it is financially prudent for plumbers to look at reducing operating costs. “This includes vehicle fuel costs which can be a major draw on business outgoings. Reducing fuel consumption through vehicle maintenance and changing driver behaviour is an economical way to reduce fuel costs and is more crucial than ever. “Controlled driving techniques and regularly checking the condition of the vehicle is something we should all be doing. “Fuel cards are also an effective way to reduce motoring costs. FuelGenie itself is a completely free fuel card for UK businesses looking to save on their fuel costs and control driver spend by using a low cost supermarket petrol station network.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/59
Worry-free transport of piping materials
Parking issues driving installers to decline work Steep parking fees and penalties are landing tradespeople with higher costs when travelling to emergency call-outs, and some have turned away work because of parking tickets. According to a Toolstation survey, 71% of tradespeople think they should be given parking exemptions and emergency parking spots when out on an emergency job. Research also shows that 80% of tradespeople have had to raise their prices because of spiraling parking costs and the price of fuel. In North London, Camden Council charges £41.39 for a trade permit to park during business hours. Combined with the £15 congestion charge, it means a full day’s work of eight hours could come to £56.39. In Edinburgh, the council charges up to £5.60 per hour to park a vehicle in a central location.
46.indd 1
It means parking for eight hours can result in a bill of £44.80. In Bristol, tradespeople are charged up to £4 an hour, taking the cost of an eight hour working day to £32. A spokesperson from Toolstation says: “Tradespeople need to be able to get to their jobs quickly and carry their materials with them, so parking charges for carrying out emergency work and on longer jobs are another unnecessary cost for them to bear and could result in raised prices for their customers.” Toolstation surveyed 500 tradespeople to get their thoughts. One respondent said: “If it is an emergency, it could cause serious property damage, or in some cases put life at risk. Customers aren’t willing to pay for fines and these jobs are stressful enough without the threat of being towed away or facing a fee.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/61
As a manufacturer of commercial vehicle accessories, Rhino Products offers a range that includes roof racks, bars, ladder transportation systems, rear steps, pipe tubes and rear door ladders. The PipeTube Pro (pictured) is designed for professional plumbers, offering a safe and convenient way to transport valuable pipes to wherever they need to go. Fitted with a rubber O-ring seal, the PipeTube Pro prevents water ingress when the nose cone is closed. Alongside this, a PVC lining helps to prevent a galvanic reaction occurring, which can lead to discoloration of items stored inside. The nose cone and connecting sleeve are designed so that the lock
is housed within the tube, contributing to a more seamless look and feel. A striking powder coated paint finish means the product can work with all van colours. Meanwhile, a universal standard fitting bracket means it is suitable for most roof racks. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/60
T-Slot rail system gives more options Described as one of the most advanced roof racks on the market, the ULTIRack+ from Van Guard Accessories features a T-Slot rail system. The heavy duty product is made from lightweight aluminium, offering more durability without adding to weight. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the ULTIRack+ is said to be ideal for carrying wide loads and includes a built-up side channel which makes it useful for quickly loading and unloading items. The T-Slot rail system allows for the attachment
of load stops and eye bolts, enabling van owners to ensure that all items on the roof rack are safely secured. “It’s exciting to be able to bring the new and improved ULTIRack+ to the market,” says marketing coordinator Amy Butterworth. “We are constantly listening to our customers and adapting our products in line with the feedback. Innovation has always been at the heart of Van Guard. “Although it inherits many of the original ULTIRack’s features, including the sleek aluminium alloy design, and full width rear roller, it now also includes the ingenious T-Slot rail system, which is similar to our ULTIBar roof bars.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/62

Controls system for heat pump and home automation Responding to increasing consumer demand for heat pumps, Panasonic has partnered with Drayton by Schneider Electric to offer its Wiser room-by-room heating control system. Designed to work seamlessly with Panasonic Aquarea air source heat pumps and the Aquarea Smart Cloud and Service Cloud apps, the Wiser system provides an additional element of energy control and home automation. The new partnership will allow installers to offer their customers room-by-room heating control by fitting Wiser with the Aquarea system. The combination of smart controls will bring different electrical devices under the control of one app, helping homeowners to lower their bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Wiser can be set up in the usual way with the Aquarea heat pump, enabling installers to easily create multi-zone systems, where heating is easily remotely controlled room-by-room. Customers will be able to monitor and easily adjust the heating in each room and via any web-enabled device.
Siphon flush design stops water waste The EasyFlushEVO range for WCs by Cistermiser brings together the benefits of non-touch and leak-free flushing. The patented siphon flush design means there is no flush seal below the waterline, so unlike traditional flush valves, it will not leak due to debris, scale or seal degradation. Said to be simple to install for both new and retrofit jobs, the device is a sensor-activated siphon dual flush valve that improves hygiene by preventing the cross contamination of pathogens with non-touch controls. The rugged sensor plate is made from stainless steel and has the option for mains or battery power, out of the box as standard. MD Richard Braid says: “According to experts Waterwise, a leaking toilet wastes between 215 and 400 litres of clean drinking water on average every day. Between 5 and 8% of toilets are estimated to be leaking, adding up to around 400 million litres of water leaking from UK toilets every day. The EasyFlushEVO is calculated to save up to 78,475 litres of water per unit per annum.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/64
The app is designed to enable users to eliminate unnecessary heating thanks to smart modes – for example, activating ‘away mode’ when a property is unoccupied helps to reduce energy consumption. Users will also benefit from all the features of the Panasonic Smart Cloud app, such as scheduling and access to a detailed breakdown of the system’s energy consumption, and ability to schedule the settings to ensure constant and comfortable temperatures. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/63
Leak-free in high pressure applications The new VC water valve range from Resideo has been designed with additional wiring functionality and the ability to handle a higher-pressure differential of bars. This, says the company, makes them ideal for larger heating systems with higher flow rates, or installations with more powerful circulation pumps. To ensure no water can pass through the valve when in the closed position, the heavy duty VC valve has been designed with a robust, linear mechanism that moves up and down to open and close the valve, and can resist up to 4 bars of pressure without leakage. The VC valve also comes with various wiring options to assist with a greater range of applications. This allows greater flexibility for installers wanting to connect the valve to the
thermostat, boiler and even a heat pump. It can also add a priority route where the hot water is heated before the radiators, so that it works effectively in conjunction with the service called for. Another advantage of the VC valve is its ease of installation. The valve actuator can simply be clipped onto the existing body. Steve Mist, senior technical support supervisor, says: “We are seeing more multiple zoned properties and an increased number of heat pump installations, bringing the need for higher pressure circulation pumps to ensure the water can be pushed around the system effectively. Installers need a solution that will marry up to ensure water does not pass through the valve when not called for.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/65

Minimise the waste in small area UFH jobs Installers wanting to minimise waste when installing underfloor heating, but still want the convenience of an off-the-shelf product, can turn to Continal’s new Small Area Solutions service. A new online selection tool on the company’s website allows installers to create their own UFH Small Area Solution (up to 30m2) tailored to their project’s exact requirements, instead of having to make do with a pre-selected area ‘pack’. They simply enter details about their project, such as the floor area, the type of system, the size of pipe required, their choice of controls and the floor finish, and the system will generate an instant quote that provides them with the best system for their
48.indd 1
ONLINE project. It can be ordered for nextday delivery, too. Small Area Solutions includes packages for solid floor systems, as well as Continal’s SlimFix and TileFix systems. They include fitting kits where necessary, as well as full instructions to ensure a quick and easy installation. Each order is checked by
Continal’s expert technical sales advisers before being dispatched to help prevent any issues, so installers can rest assured that they’ll always receive exactly what they need to complete the job. The online Small Area Solution selection tool can be found by using the link below. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/66

Helping to make balancing easy for installers and reduce the risk of call backs from systems not performing correctly, Drayton has launched its new auto-balancing TRV technology, available for two of its most popular ranges – the TRV4 and RT414. Easy to fit, the installer only needs to identify the heat output from the radiator and correlate it to the correct position on the TRV using the setting table included with the product. For existing radiators, where installers may be unsure of the heat output, they can use the new handy valve setting calculator on Drayton’s website. “Radiator balancing is an essential practice to improve boiler efficiency and avoid cold spots within the home, but it is a practice that most installers find very time consuming and complex,” says David Kempster, product manager at Drayton.“Our aim with this new auto-balancing TRV technology is to make this process as simple as possible, reducing the time it takes to balance a system and eliminate call backs due to homeowners complaining about cold radiators, making it beneficial for not only the installer, but the homeowner too.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/67

Data extraction is faster and easier The second generation of the AudioLINK+ app is now faster, quieter, and more reliable, according to Aico, making it easy to access realtime data from its smoke and CO alarms. The ‘plus’ version extracts the same data as the previous AudioLINK app, but faster. With the average time to obtain a report taking between 4 and 7 seconds, AudioLINK+ technology makes the task more efficient. The new app is also backwards compatible, meaning AudioLINK alarms currently installed do not need to be replaced
to utilise the new technology, and it will work with the new version of the app. Using the app, users can get a simple-to-read simple colour-coded report giving information on a range of alarm data including: alarm activations, sensor status, alarm testing information, battery and back up cell status, recorded carbon monoxide (CO) levels within CO alarms, and advice on dust contamination levels. AudioLINK+ data extraction technology is built into all Aico’s carbon monoxide alarms, such as the Ei208, and the entire 3000 series alarm range. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/70
Pre-insulated pipe specified for greater range of applications As Rehau celebrates 10 years of production in the UK of its Rauvitherm pre-insulated PE-Xa pipe, the company is highlighting its wide applicability to projects ranging from district heating to individual households. Over the years, the product has been installed on a wide range of high-profile projects such as football club training grounds, National Trust and Grade 1 listed country manors, farm-based anaerobic digestion systems, schools, zoos and district heating networks for luxury lodge developments. More recently the product is being specified for individual houses to connect air source heat pumps that are located away from the property. According to Rehau, remote siting is required for a variety of reasons – heat pumps need good air
49.indd 1
flow to work effectively, and noise can also be an issue in some cases, so situating them on the side of the property is not always feasible. Steve Richmond, head of marketing and technical, says: “We always knew Rauvitherm was a great product with great potential, and it has gone from strength to strength over the years. For example, we know the availability of pre-insulated pipe will be key to covering all bases in the government’s heat pump rollout and enabling the wider success of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/722/71

The clean and classic designs are always welcomed by my customers and fellow installers. “The popularity of these chrome taps come from them being extremely hard wearing, easy to clean and long lasting. Bristan offers great value taps and showers with styles to suit a range of homes, and with every product in the range being WRAS approved and backed with a five-year parts warranty, what’s not to like? “This competition is a great opportunity for installers to experience Bristan and try some of the products for themselves.
