GETTING TO KOH PHANGAN .................................................................................................. BY PLANE The fastest way to travel to Koh Phangan and perfect for those with a limited stay in Thailand. Koh Samui is serviced by Bangkok Airways and there are regular daily flights from around Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Check ww.bangkokair.com for details. From the airport take a taxi to one of the piers where you can catch a ferry to Koh Phangan for about 250 baht. The last ferry leaves at 6 pm. Suratthani is serviced by Thai Airways and the low cost carriers Air Asia and Nok Air. The latter two airlines offer great Bangkok- Suratthani deals. Upon your arrival to the airport visit a travel agency to purchase a bus and boat combo' ticket for between 500 and 600 baht to Koh Phangan.
BY TRAIN These run throughout the day leaving from Bangkok and southern Thailand. In our opinion the overnight sleeper train is the best value option when travelling to Koh Phangan. You will need to reserve your train ticket in advance as it is a popular way to travel. At the time of booking there is a choice of first and second class cabins which air either fan cooled or have air conditioning. Travellers often prefer cooled cabins as the air conditioning systems on trains produce cold and very dry air. You will receive a table, a sofa which is converted to a flat bed in the evening and a waiter serving food and beverages. Trains stop in Suratthani where you can arrange a bus and ferry ticket to Koh Phangan. More info and timetable on www.railway.co.th
BY BUS AND FERRY From Suratthani: Songserm Ferry, Raja Ferry (which both take around 3 hrs) or the quicker Lomprayah catamaran (about 1.5 hrs). A night boat service is also available with comfortable beds and fans. This departs at 11 pm and takes about 7 hrs. From Koh Samui: Three different piers on Samui service Koh Phangan and the boat journey can take anything from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The Haad Rin Queen Ferry is another option and travels directly to Haad Rin. From Koh Tao: Boats depart from Mae Haad pier at regular intervals and arrive in Thongsala. Choose between Songserm, Seatran or Lomprayah services. the best option is a combo ticket which includes an overnight bus to Suratthani and the onward ferry to Phangan. The cost varies but is usually around 700 baht. Khaosan Road offers the cheapest deals. The Government bus leaves from Bangkok south station at 7 pm and arrives on Koh Phangan at 10 am.

DISCOVER KOH PHANGANS MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
HERE COMES
THE SUN
Koh Phangan has a contrasting landscape and the same can be said about it's beaches. There are idyllic white sandy beaches stretching around the island varying in character and atmosphere but always offer beautifully clear waters. Due to the tidal nature of Phangan, the best beaches for swimming tend to be on the north and east coasts. Whichever point on the compass you head for you will be treated to gorgeous coves and sandy stretches ideal for visitors seeking privacy, beach games or for those just happy to laze and take in the palm fringed scenery.
AO HAAD MAE HAAD BEACH (WEST) Mae Haad beach and sand bar to Koh Ma Island located in the North of Koh Phangan is a popular spot and a must see for all visitors to the Phangan Island. At low tide it is possible to walk along the sand bar from Haad Mae Haad to Koh Ma. Bring your snorkel and mask as the area is rich in marine life with vibrant coral and a wealth undersea life.
AO CHALOKLUM BEACH (NORTH) A long stretch of coastline which is suitable for swimming and snorkelling. A great place to relax and watch local fishermen arrive and depart in their long tail boats. There is a wealth of good seafood restaurants where you can enjoy the fruits of their labour! Chalokum is Koh Phangan's second-largest settlement is a laid-back little fishing village on the north coast of Koh Phangan.
AO BOTTLE BEACH - HAAD KHUAD (NORTH) Accessible either by boat from Chaloklum or by road from Thong Nai Pan, this well known beach is well worth the trip! The crescent shaped cove is one of the most scenic places on the Phangan island and the wide, white sandy beach is surrounded by lush mountain greenery. Bottle Beach is the more stunning of the two bays, although Haad Khom is still quite the beauty queen.
AO THONG NAI PAN BEACH (NORTH-EAST) The North and South beaches of Thong Nai Pan offers a stunning mountain backdrop and a true taste of paradise. This area has become a favourite hangout for those seeking the ultimate chill out spot and has a friendly, laid back feel. A nice wide beach for swimming and beach games.
HAAD THAN SADET (EAST) Haad Than Sadet sits past a rocky headland and is a large but relaxed beach cove that has all year round great condition for swimmning. Here lies a string of modestly simple places – the remoteness of these places makes them perfect for a romantic getaway . Do not miss famous and pretty well know beautiful Than Sadet Waterfall.
AO BAAN TAI BEACH AND BAAN KHAI BEACH (SOUTH) A long stretch of beautiful Baan Tai sandy coastline which has a several bungalows and resorts. Baan Tai beach offers a great view of Koh Samui, outstanding sunsets and the opportunity to indulge in beach games and a spot of snorkelling. Between the villages of Ban Tai and Baan Khai is a series of sandy beaches with quite a few well-spaced bungalow operations.
AO NAI WOK (THONGSALA BEACH) A delightful bay North of Thongsala offering an incredible sunset over a series of large granite boulders and a beach rich in colourful seashells. Those with a sense of adventure can kayak to the nearby island of Koh Tae Nai which has an untouched feel and some beautiful coral.
HAAD CHAO PHAO AND SRITHANU BEACH (WEST) One of the more tranquil beaches on this coast, Hat Chaophao is a rounded beach two headlands south of Haad Yao; Ao Sithanu sits south of this beach. There's a charming lagoon at the southern end of Hat Chao Phao as well as a few bars and mini-marts scattered along the road, so you're never far from essentials like water or beer.
AO HAAD YAO BEACH (WEST) A popular beach on the North West of the Koh Phangan Island. Here you will find plenty of bars and restaurants on the beach playing relaxing music. Some of the restaurants offers evening BBQ at competitive prices making Haad Yao beach a perfect spot for socializing, beach games and cocktails at sunset!
AO HAAD SALAD BEACH (WEST) A secluded palm fringed bay which many regard as one of the most beautiful on the island. Those looking for solitude and scenic vistas wont be disappointed!

The name speaks for itself. Every Saturday musicians from all over the world (and for sure a few not of this one!), some lucky enough to call Koh Phangan home, some first time holiday makers that have stumbled across it, and some travellers that return year after year; head down to the The Jam to do exactly that.
“The Jam started as a place to jam in the garden with friends. A small stage next to the beach, no roof. Over time it turned out there were more like-minded people around, and more and more musicians turned up and jammed with us. Rain made us build a roof over the stage, and we made a small bar for the thirsty. The Jam was born...”
And there’s no missing it: an army of bikes parked along the road marks the spot, set on the beach along the beautiful west coast of Phangan between Wok Tum and Sri Thanu. A fully-equipped stage beside the ocean overlookiing neighbouring Koh Samui.
Sounds picture perfect huh? Which no doubt accounts partly for the great vibe going on here – welcoming, friendly and totally chilled. A good mix of locals and farang either party the night away, or sit back and enjoy. And with no rip-off on the bar prices, this is a great fun and affordable night out!

Anyone and everyone is welcome to jam, and to use the set up already there - drum kit, electric guitar, bass, synth, bongos and a clear PA system, or to bring their own instruments. Funk, Pop, Rock, Reggae, Soul, Experimental (some very!) and Jazz, are just some of what you’ll hear. Every week is different with new musicians and new sounds. And as Robert says: “Although it isn’t easy to get all these musicians to jam as one, its a fun thing to do, and the outcome is always great. Some like to do their song on their own, and we like to give them that space, even the kids get involved.”
On Wednesdays they have the semiacoustic jam sessions, easy going, and a great time to work on ideas for Saturdays fully plugged sessions. So even if you‘re no musician and can‘t hold a tune yourself, but just want somewhere to chill out away from the madness of Haad Rin, it’s another Koh Phangan “must do”. For a taste of The Jam go to www.th e ja m p h an g an .co m You can even check out some of the nights on YouTube through the website to see what’s in store. The Jam starts around 6pm every Saturday, just about right to catch the sunset from one of the best locations on the Island.....enjoy! >THE JAM. Moo. 6, Hin Kong Beach Road. DINING
ON THE ISLAND
TREKKING UP KHAO RAA THE ISLAND’S HIGHEST PEAK OFFERS AN INVIGORATING CLIMB AND STUNNING VIEWS OF A MAGICAL JUNGLE ISLAND, STEEPED IN HISTORY AND MYSTERY. Early traders and settlers on Koh Phangan focused heavily on the extraction of coastal marine resources and logging for their livelihoods. Fishing villages sprung up on beaches all round the island, constructed with local tropical hardwoods that were also used for the growing boat building industry. Over time the immense stands of tropical hardwoods that sustained much of the indigenous terrestrial biodiversity were cut back and replaced with coconut plantations and other introduced fruiting species. A trek up Khao Raa gives you an insight into how much of the island looked before the arrival of chainsaws, tractors and tourism, and provides a spiritual antidote for the developmental onslaught affecting the rest of Koh Phangan.
The view over the entire northern half of the island is worth every second of the climb’s effort, and if you are fortunate enough, soaring eagles will greet you at the summit. It’s possible to take a number of routes up Khao Raa (most of which will invariably involve some challenging scrambling on steep old tracks through occasional thick undergrowth).
THINGS TO DO AND SEE PICTURE BY ANDREAS GUMPRECHT, WRITTEN BY ROBIN (NAMIBIA)
But the standard route from the south-east corner is advisable for day hikers. This route, marked by ½ km spaced signposts and discarded water bottle markers so favoured on the island, starts at the dam 4 km east along a dirt track from the Baan Madue Whan turning. Cross the bridge over the dam and follow the stream for 100 metres until you reach the first signpost. The path then winds along the stream for a short distance, before turning away and into the rainforest where a well worn track continues for 3 km to Khao Raa. Take time to stop and soak in the ambiance of the old growth forest. Gaze at flowering orchids sprouting high in the bows of 500 year old teak and mahogany trees. Listen for streams emerging from rocky outcrops – they’ll cool you down in the heat and humidity.
The mountain steam plunge pools that greet you on return to the base of the trek are blissfully refreshing to bathe in before you emerge from the forest. The return trek takes 2-3 hours, most of which is in the shade of the forest canopy. Take a minimum of 1.5 litres of water, insect repellent and a torch. And make sure you get down before dark, as night falls fast in the rainforest.
