A Note from the Navigator The busy season on Koh Phangan has drawn to a close and what a crazy one it was! The worst flooding in Southern Thailand in a generation greatly affected the island’s tourism trade .......ironically subsiding just before Songkran. Businesses suffered as people stayed to the north of Thailand and travellers were left stranded, unable to leave on ferries to and from Phangan. Freakish weather conditions were not just isolated to the south of this country but an earthquake also rocked northern Thailand. A special mention needs to be given to all those who have been affected by the recent tsunami in Japan- our thoughts and prayers are with you. The weather conditions on Koh Phangan have stabilised and for many the period between June and August is the perfect time to visit the island. The island’s interior is more vibrant in colour and the waters which surround Koh Phangan become clearer allowing for fantastic swimming, snorkelling and diving. Tourists are free to enjoy sparsely crowded beaches and secluded island spots with cheaper deals on accommodation and other island services also available. Somehow the regular parties based on Koh Phangan still attract sizeable crowds and there is a noticeable influx of people to the island for the five days around Full Moon. The Navigator team wishes you the very best for your stay on Phangan and we hope that this guide provides you with the information necessary to make the most of every day whilst visiting our awe i nspiring island. Whatever your plans on beautiful Koh Phangan, be sure to put the Navigator in your backpack so that you can always refer to your local friend! After use, pass to a friend or recycle

ABOUT KOH PHANGAN

Koh Phangan is a small island which is as rich in culture and history as it is in beauty. Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, has a population of approximately 12,000 smiling locals and covers an area of 168km2. The weather rarely drops below 30c (although the cooler monsoon season runs from Oct-Nov) and the water often matches the air temperature. The island is truly a world of contrast with exceptional sightseeing opportunities. There is a vast number of white sandy beaches to laze on, trails through tropical jungle, ancient architecture and tradition. Phangan is the perfect place to visit at any time of the year ....untold riches await your discovery!! With so much to fill your days save some power for the evenings as the island's pulsating nightlife is not to be missed! There are a host of great restaurants and food stalls, lively bars but above all epic beach and jungle parties including the mind-blowing Full Moon Party. On Koh Phangan there is something for everyone and your visit can be as relaxing or as busy as you want. Welcome to Koh Phangan....you're going to love it!!

GETTING TO KOH PHANGAN

By Plane: The fastest way to travel to Koh Phangan and perfect for those with a limited stay in Thailand ....but also costly. It is worth bearing in mind the time taken up waiting around at airports when considering purchasing a flight ticket. There are additional costs of checking in luggage and taxis to and from the airport. The nearest airports to Koh Phangan are on the island of Koh Samui (USM) and Suratthani (URT) on the mainland. Koh Samui is serviced by Bangkok Airways and there are regular daily flights from around Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Check www.bangkokair.com for details. From the airport take a taxi to one of the piers where you can catch a ferry to Koh Phangan for about 250baht. The last ferry leaves at 6pm. Suratthani is serviced by Thai Airways and the low cost carriers Air Asia and Nok Air. The latter two airlines offer great Bangkok- Suratthani deals. Upon your arrival to the airport visit a travel agency to purchase a bus and boat combo' ticket for between 500 and 600baht to Koh Phangan. Nok Air in conjunction with Lomprayah ferries offer a combo’ flight/bus/ferry ticket from Bangkok (Dong Meung Airport) for about 2900baht per person. They fly to either Suratthani or Nakon Si Thammarat.

By Train: These run throughout the day leaving from Bangkok and southern Thailand. In our opinion the overnight sleeper train is the best value option when travelling to Koh Phangan. You will need to reserve your train ticket in advance as it is a popular way to travel. At the time of booking there is a choice of first and second class cabins which air either fan cooled or have air conditioning. Travellers often prefer f an cooled cabins as the air conditioning systems on trains produce cold and very dry air. You will receive a table, a sofa which is converted to a flat bed in the evening and a waiter serving food and beverages. Trains stop in Suratthani where you can arrange a bus and ferry ticket to Koh Phangan. More info and timetable on www.railway.co.th

By Bus:

By Boat: Whether arriving by plane, train or automobile you will need to take a ferry to Koh Phangan. The ferry timetables at the back of your Navigator will enable you to plan your journey more efficiently. From Suratthani: Several options are available from local travel agencies. These include Songserm Ferry, Raja Ferry (which both take around 3hrs) or the quicker Lomprayah catamaran (about 1.5hrs). A night boat service is also available with comfortable beds and fans. This departs at 11pm and takes about 7hrs. From Koh Samui: Three different piers on Samui service Koh Phangan and the boat journey can take anything from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Ferries arrive in Thongsala- just pick the ferry which best suits your itinerary as they only vary slightly in cost. The Haad Rin Queen Ferry is another option and travels directly to Haad Rin. From Koh Tao: Boats depart from Mae Haad pier at regular intervals and arrive in Thongsala. Choose between Songserm, Seatran or Lomprayah services. The last boat from Koh Tao to Phangan is at 3pm.

Most travel agents in major tourist spots such as Bangkok, Phuket and Hat Yai sell one way tickets to Koh Phangan. From Bangkok the cheapest and in our opinion the best option is a combo' ticket which includes an overnight bus to Suratthani and the onward ferry to Phangan. The cost varies but is usually around 700baht. Khaosan Road offers the cheapest deals. Buses can be uncomfortable and therefore the Navigator recommends spending a little extra for a VIP ticket. There are 2 types of VIP bus- a 40 seater and the more luxurious 24 seater. We also recommend travelling on the Government bus. The Government bus leaves from Bangkok south station at 7pm and arrives on Koh Phangan at 10am. The reverse journey means leaving Koh Phangan at 5pm and arriving in Bangkok at 6am. When travelling by bus keep an eye on your valuables as thefts on board are sometimes reported.

Mopeds

Car Hire

A great way to discover picturesque Phangan. Mopeds can be rented throughout the island with prices ranging from 100baht-250baht per day with discounts for long term rental. There are plenty of bike shops and mechanics dotted on the side of roads to help you fix flat tyres approx 150baht) or buy fuel/oil. Dirt bikes to access rougher terrain can be hired for up to 750baht. It has become standard practice to deposit your passport when signing a motorcycle hire contract. Before your passport is returned the bike will be thoroughly checked for wear and tear and any damage to the bike will need to be repaid. Do not drink and drive and always wear a helmet!! Roads on the island can be dangerous and failure to do so may cost you more than a 200baht police fine!

Depending on the size of your group and your itinerary, 4x4 vehicles can prove to be cost effective and better equipped for the rougher roads on Koh Phangan. Prices range from 600baht-1500baht per day depending on the quality of the vehicle and rental duration. Some larger resorts and companies may offer insurance but most vendors do not provide this piece of mind. Be cautious as minor car damage could cause major budget damage!

Bicycle An affordable, enjoyable and “green way to explore the rugged terrain of Koh Phangan. Ideal for those looking to burn a few calories or who feel daunted by the thought of renting a motorcycle. Generally you can pick up mountain bikes for approximately 100 baht from hire companies and selected resorts. Taxi Songteows and motorbike taxis are available island wide. A stand is located by the ferry piers at Thongsala and another is located in Haad Rin near to the police station. Always agree a price in advance. Below are typical prices for main routes on the island but these vary depending on the time of day, your group size and the mood of the driver!

Recommended Taxi Prices Thongsala to Chaloklum: 150 baht / person Thongsala to Haad Rin: 150 baht / person Thongsala to Haad Yao or Haad Salad: 150 baht / person Thongsala to Mae Haad: 150 baht / person Thongsala to Thong Nai Pan or Than Sadet Beach: 250 baht / person Thongsala to Baan Tai 100 baht / person

PHANGAN TIPS AND INFORMATION

Medical Care is available throughout Phangan and there are several 24hr clinics and hospitals which offer good standards of treatment. Koh Phangan Hospital in Wok Tum is a cheap and well equipped option for minor injuries. This hospital and the majority of the clinics on the island will arrange emergency patient transfer to Koh Samui or mainland Suratthani if necessary. The Inter Clinics in Haad Rin and Phangan Medical Centre in Baan Tai also offer good standards of basic care but lack the facilities to cope with major injuries and serious medical conditions. Call 077 377 034, Rescue Service 077 377 500 Dental Care is available opposite the pier in Baan Tai. The clinic is only open between 5pm and 9pm and is closed on Sundays. The clinic has modern equipment, offers a high standard of care and appointments need to be made in advance. Call 077238 820. Police are ever present on the island. A new Tourist Police office can be found by the Lomprayah pier in Thongsala. It is here where paperwork can be filed and any crimes reported. The majority of officers understand basic English and can often be seen throughout the island ensuring a safe environment whilst enforcing a zero drugs tolerance policy. There is another station based on the outskirts of Thongsala. Call 077 377 114, Tourist Police 1155 Banks can be found island wide and most offer an ATM withdrawal service however you may be charged upwards of 150baht for withdrawals. ATMs can be found at Tesco Lotus and at Seven-Elevens. Money changers compete with banks to change foreign currency/travellers cheques although there is little difference 14 between them with regards to exchange rates.

Post office can be found in Thongsala. To send a postcard home will usually set you back about 12baht and stamps can be bought at the post office or Seven Eleven. If you are looking to send a package home expect to spend about 250baht per kilo. Shipping times vary but deliveries usually take between 7 and 10 days. Laundry services are offered by the majority of resorts and guest houses on the island at prices start from around 30baht per kg. Coin operated washing machines may also be found which take 10baht coins. Internet is available in cafes and shops scattered around Phangan and are often 1baht per minute although a minimum charge of 20baht usually applies. This will allow you the use of ADSL broadband network on modern computers or via a wireless connection on your laptop. Printing services the majority offer reasonable rates for printing business cards, banners, stickers and such like. The Navigator recommends Greencom who have an office based just outside Thongsala. Jip and her team offer a fast, efficient and well priced printing service. Bookshops can be found in the main tourist spots. Used books can be traded with magazines and newspapers also available for purchase. Tattoo shops are common place on Koh Phangan and many travellers tend to purchase tattoos in Thailand as they are cheaper. Stunning body art is often produced by the boys at the Tattoo Club in Thongsala who specialise in both machine and traditional bamboo tattoos.

The island has a stunning and diverse natural environment to explore. From lush untouched rain forests, sparkling waterfalls, mountains and spectacular deserted coves...Koh Phangan can take your breathe away! Along with the character filled villages like Chaloklum or Srithanu and the ancient temples which exist here, Phangan’s landscape makes the island both a beautiful and a spiritual place. Several spots on the island are a “must see” so check your Navigator map for directions, hop on your moped and go and explore!... The mountainous and hilly interior of Koh Phangan provides visitors with some dramatic scenic viewpoints. Our favorite is Khao Ra and make sure that your body is adequately fueled and that you are carrying some water as there is a sometimes challenging 2hr trek to the mountain’s summit! Other viewpoints to make a beeline for are Dome Sila viewpoint, Wat Khao Tam and Mr Pong’s Paradise which can be found on the road running north from Baan Tai. There are numerous impressive waterfalls to discover which are scattered around Koh Phangan. At Paeng Waterfalls you can literally park your 'ped, take out your camera and 26

take awe inspiring images of this natural wonder straight away. For those feeling energetic and for the more adventurous why not take one of the marked paths and scramble upwards for ever more impressive backdrops to the waterfall? Pack some swim wear and you’ll be able to cool down and splash around in some of the refreshing plunge pools on your way up or down. The waterfalls of Than Sadet sights ancient inscribed rocks which sit amongst an array of glistening freshwater falls. Clambering around this protected area and enjoying the island's flora and fauna can be a unique and treasured experience. Other waterfalls to look out for are Wansai waterfall and Than Prawes waterfall. Religious monuments, sacred architecture and ancient temples can be found all around Koh Phangan. The majority of temples welcome tourists but please remember that Buddhist traditions must be observed and respected. Wat Khao Tam has been highlighted as the oldest temple on the island and offers a spiritual experience with outstanding views of Samui. For something different check out the colorful Chinese Temple and Wat Pho which offers natural herb saunas and traditional massage. Other attractions which deserve a nod include Leam Son Lake (Srithanu), the island's biggest tree (near Wat Pho), the sand bar at Koh Ma, the fishing scene at Chaloklum and the coves of Thong Nai Pan.

DAYTIME ACTIVITIES

An enjoyable trek and definitely a Navigator favorite is the walk/scramble between Haad Rin and Haad Thian. This is a marked trek through the undulating jungle which provides trekkers with great views of the island’s coastline and of Koh Samui on the horizon. A popular trek where ramblers can enjoy the beauty of Phangan’s interior is the Khao Ra trek. A stunning 3hr climb to the highest peak on the island awaits the more adventurous hikers. At the summit you will be rewarded with dramatic vistas of the northern coves and Koh Tao. Listen to advice from the locals and to other backpacker's stories before trekking, take plenty of water and wear some decent footwear! After having explored some of Koh Phangan’s beautiful sights and stunning beaches it could be time to try out one of the many other land based activities on the island. Trekking: The scenic coastal terrain and the rugged undisturbed jungle interior of Koh Phangan provides plenty of good walks and trekking opportunities. Guided treks can be arranged through travel agencies and at Than Sadet national park but there are several marked and well trodden footpaths on the island which will appeal to your sense of adventure. Wherever you find yourself on Phangan there are always places to explore on foot. The most popular routes are along the untamed and mountainous east coast which offer stunning views and occasionally testing terrain.

28

Elephant Treks: A few operators on Koh Phangan offer you the chance to ride these magnificent creatures through the island’s rain forests. You also get the opportunity to help feed them and an elephant show can also be included. The Navigator recommends Baan Tai Elephant Trekking located on the road between Baan Tai and Thong Nai Pan. Canopy Tour with Zip Lines: A fun-filled activity and an opportunity to experience Koh Phangan's rain forest at an altitude of more than 300m above sea level! Visitors can take in the gorgeous views whilst negotiating the canopy walkway circuit and zip lining through the jungle. “Just for Fun” canopy adventure is located near Baan Tai on the mountain road towards Thong Nai Pan and has an outstanding safety record. Opening hours are from 10am-6pm. Adults cost 800 baht and children cost 600 baht.

An Island tour packed with excitement! The Safari Boat Company have recently launched their inland adventure tour and it is proving exceptionally popular. This fantastic day trip caters to all ages and allows guests to soak up the character of Phangan whilst partaking in some of the more thrill seeking activities that the island has to offer! This tour has various options to choose from and includes a light breakfast and a sumptous lunch buffet at one of the island’s best eateries. Some of our highlights are below: Phaeng Waterfalls: A jungle walk over boulders and through trickling streams allows guests to experience the island’s rainforests and wildlife. After a steep climb unpack the swim wear and relax in one of the many plunge pools that the waterfall has to offer.

Booking Line: 077 238 232

Elephant trekking: Ride, play and help feed these magnificent creatures which have played an important part in Thailands history. Archery: Fancy a go playing Robin Hood? Great fun trying to outscore your friends after being shown how to use the modern compound bows (rather than the simple wooden ones from medieval times!). Canopy Tour: What better way to get the adrenaline pumping than to swing and zipline through trees Tarzan style! Breathtaking views and nerve jangling fun! Herbal steam sauna: Relax and unwind Thai style at one of the islands oldest temples. A fantastic way to cleanse the body and relax those aching muscles!

Getting a kick out of Koh Phangan: An interview with a Muay Thai legend

Thai

Boxing Nav: How long have you been involved in muay thai? Chin: A long time! I had my first fight at 8 years old and from then I had over 250 fights, 185 wins. I became Lumpinee and World Champion before I retired and started training people 7 years ago. Nav: What does training involve and who trains at your gym? Chin: We train Thai fighters and foreigner who are looking to improve fitness or sharpen their technique. Training involves running, skipping, pad and bag work. From your first session you will learn to punch, kick, knee and elbow, but how much I push you will depend on your fitness! Most of our students are used to coming for training each year for 2-3 months and they are in very good shape! 30

Koh Phangan has several muay thai camps. The Phangan Navigator checked in with Mr Chin from Muay Thai Chinnarach for an insight into “the science of eight limbs

Nav: Why should people come and train with you? Chin: We are a very family orientated gym where everyone trains hard, has fun and socialises afterwards. Personally I am very focussed on teaching correct technique. This is the sport that I love and I hope that you come and train with me! After meeting Chin and seeing the atmosphere he and the other trainers create during the training sessions, I think we just might. Nav: Thanks Chin for your time, Phangan Navigator wish you good luck. Muay Thai Chinnarach gym can be found near the pier at Thongsala. Training sessions commence at 9am and 4pm daily, except sunday and run for 2 hours. Contact Chin on 086 953 8253.

Koh Phangan is surrounded by mild crystal clear waters which offer plenty of water based activities for visitors to enjoy. Snorkeling off the white sandy beaches on Phangan is a cheap and fun way to marvel at the island's colorful marine life and underwater coral. There are a variety of spots around Koh Phangan to snorkel with masks, fins and snorkels available for hire the majority of beach resorts, dive operators and some travel agencies. Several companies offer snorkel trips to take visitors to the best snorkeling hangouts and these trips often include a guide, all your equipment and lunch (with hotel transfers also available). Diving offers holidaymakers the opportunity to get closer to the stunning array of aquatic life that Koh Phangan has to offer and some of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand are within easy reach. For beginners there are several dive operators who offer introductory “try dives and the opportunity to complete basic dives courses such as PADI Open Water Certificate. Experienced divers are also catered for as there are some tricky dives around Koh Phangan and the opportunity to complete Divemaster and Instructor courses. Regardless of your diving experience, Koh Phangan is one of the cheapest places in the world to dive, groups tend to be small and there is generally a high standard of instruction.

Standout areas to snorkel and dive around the island tend to be on the west coast. Great spots include the sand bar of Koh Ma, Haad Salad and Haad Yao but divers and snorkelers alike will find vibrant coral reef running parallel to the beaches anywhere between Wok Tum and Koh Ma. The reef is very accessible and it is possible to dive to 20m taking in hard and soft coral features and large schools of tropical fish. Sail Rock is further afield and is widely regarded as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. Larger fish such as whale sharks, grouper and barracuda are attracted to this impressive rock formation which offers swim thrus and coral wall dives to a depth of up to 45m. Other stunning dive sites within easy reach of Koh Phangan include Chumpon Pinnacle and Angthong Marine Park which both offer rare and untouched oral formations inhabited by some of he most rare underwater life in Thailand.

Health and Spa

Health and Wellbeing: There are many places on Koh Phangan which will help you nourish your mind, body and soul! Exploring the island you will find plenty of massage shops and day spas. These can offer a range of treatments including traditional Thai massage, oil massage, reflexology, face and body treatments in a relaxed and calming environment. Courses in Thai massag can be found island-wide and there are also several herbal steam rooms and jacuzzis so enjoy. Yoga retreats and healing centers are popping up all over Koh Phangan which reflects a growing interest in spiritual health and alternative healing techniques. Numerous forms of yoga are practiced under the guidance of qualified instructors who welcome beginner and advanced “yogis”. Costs vary but sessions usually cost about 300 baht. Other options for the open minded include reiki, chakra, Pilates and Tai Chi. Cleansing programs which include fasting, detox and weight loss may also be undertaken.

their age or fitness level the opportunity to stay active and have fun! The gym holds daily aerobics and dance classes and along with internationally qualified instructors a visit here can be an enjoyable and safe experience. Love your shape, love your body!

Phangan is a popular place to practice Buddhist meditation with temples and meditation centers offering courses which can last for up to 10 days and beyond. The retreat at Wat Khao Tam is a popular retreat but keep an eye out for posters and fliers on notice boards for further information and dates.

Muay Thai: Several Thai boxing gyms on Koh Phangan offer lessons and courses where you can learn the national sport of Thailand. Costs are usually around 400 baht for 2 hours of training with English speaking instructors welcoming beginners and advanced practitioners. Stadiums on the island host weekly “fight nights” where you can observe this elegant yet brutal martial art at a cost of about 600 baht. Keep an ear out for one of the advertising trucks which blast out music and announce the next bouts!

Fitness gyms: There are a handful of weight training facilities on the island where you can pump some iron or work off those Sangsom buckets. A Navigator favorite is The Body Health and Fitness Center which offers everyone, no matter

Other land based activities include beach football and volleyball in Haad Rin, archery (located near Chaloklum), paintballing and BB Guns. For the more creative types Thai cooking and jewelery making courses can also be found.

WATER ACTIVITIES

A fantastic way to explore some of the idyllic and least accessible coves of Koh Phangan. Trips can be arranged by most resorts and travel agencies and you will be taken around the island on traditional longtail boats or more modern motor yachts. Private cruises are available at a higher cost. Deals usually include a buffet lunch, refreshments and snorkeling gear but make sure you pack a hat and sunscreen as the sun can be intense! A cruise to Angthong Marine Park is an experience not to be missed! The park is a fascinating archipelago made up of more than 40 islands where visitors are free to explore caves, hidden lagoons, deserted white sand beaches and the emerald lake. Tan Tour offers a well organised day trip departing from Thongsala by speedboat so that you can enjoy a full day basking in this idyllic paradise where you can kayak and snorkel amongst the shallow coral gardens. Excursions include a light breakfast, buffet lunch, snacks, drinks and snorkeling equipment for a cost of only 1,600 baht + 200 baht for entrance fee to the National Marine Park. The Navigator recommend Safari Boat company, booking line 077 238 232 Take a trip to The Lake Hut, and you will find a whole range of new water activities on Laem Son Lake. Enough adrenaline fuelled sports and activities to keep you entertained all day.

36

Prices can be negotiated with local fishermen and you can have fun catching smaller fish and squid using handlines. For those with their own equipment or borrowed rods and lines from resorts it is also possible to fish off boulders and rocks around the island. Why not take a few beers, cast off and enjoy a spot of stress free sunset fishing! Kayaking: The crystal clear waters and relatively calm seas surrounding Koh Phangan make kayaking a great pastime for holidaymakers of all ages. The majority of beach resorts rent out one and two person kayaks for around 150 baht per hour. A great way of burning some calories whilst taking in different views on the island! Make sure that you store your camera and any valuables in a waterproof bag and ask the locals about tide conditions before paddling out. Windsurfing and kiteboarding: Why not take part in a wind powered sport? The best winds hit Koh Phangan between January and April although it is possible to take part in these sports all year round depending on the incoming breezes. The best place to head for is Baan Tai as this is where the major operators are situated and the shallow waters are ideal for these pursuits. Expert tuition and decent equipment is available and there are several kiteboarding and windsurfing outlets on the island to purchase kit Other water based activities include jetskiing (the most popular spot is Haad Rin), wakeboarding (Chaloklum) and there is an opportunity to sail Hobie cats and lasers at sailing operations based in Baan Tai and some of the larger beach resorts.

We started at around 7pm getting ready with a couple of drinks and putting on the body paint. This is pretty standard to get a bit of a buzz- on before the carnage which is Haad Rin! The cocktails soon started flowing and by about 11pm we were ready to head off to join the party. I made sure that everyone just took enough money for the night and leave their valuables behind as people are always losing cameras and their wallets. We ordered a taxi from the resortI never drive to Full Moon as there are so many accidents on the roads and I’d rather pay 100baht than become another statistic!

The Navigator had a chat with Vicky from Guernsey after May’s Full Moon party. She has been coming to Koh Phangan on and off for the past few years to train at one of the muay thai gyms on the island. This is what Vicky had to say about her recent escapades: ‘I have to point out that this wasn’t my first Full Moon party and I am not ashamed to say it. This is probably the fifth time I’ve been to Koh Phangan and every time I hit the Full Moon party it is with a good crowd of people and is always action packed! This time I went with a group of backpackers2 Australian girls and 3 Swedish guys that I had met at the resort where I was staying. It was to be their first Full Moon so I thought I had better be the chaperone - great excuse for me to party!!

Once in the taxi the excitement started to mount and I can’t remember some of the songs we were singing but looking back on it. they were pretty bad! Once in Haad Rin I guided my friends through the buzzing masses to YoYo- my favourite bucket stall guy. He always remembers me and if you get to know one of the bucket sellers he/she always sneaks a little extra vodka or gives a cheaper price! Full Moon is always busy so we found a ‘base’ which was where to meet if we got lost. It was directly in front of one of the medical tents which look after the people who go a little bit too far! The night gets a bit hazy from here but we wandered down the beach through the gyrating hoards and dancing at the various music spots we liked. Our group spent most of the night outside Zoom Bar- my favourite spot and where a lot of my Thai friends dance. By the time the sun rose the party was still in full flow but I left shortly after sunrise-my new buddies having had an amazing night. I have been to the after party at Backyard Bar plenty of times and couldn’t cope with another all day party! Another awesome night and I never regret going out on Full Moon.’ 37

Koh Phangan has become a haven from those seeking to de-stress and to seek solitude from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island’s stunning natural environment, the beaches, the mountains and the hidden hideaways are perfect to unwind. But what is meditation and isn’t it just for linen clad new age types? Here are a few facts about meditation practices and the benefits that everyone can enjoy as a result of meditating. Meditation often refers to any practice which trains or uses the mind to produce a form of consciousness which in turn results in personal benefit. Benefits can include clarity of the mind, self awareness, calmness and a feeling of well being. It is an internal practice which is isolated to the individualalthough centres exist to offer guidance; meditation is personal and is not influenced by external factors. Meditation has been used for thousands of years and early records show that Buddhists began to develop meditation practices from as early as 500bc. Much of the focus is on quieting the mind and relaxing both the mind and body. In recent times doctors have been prescribing meditation for anxiety, insomnia and to prevent heart problems and high blood pressure. Knock on effects are often an increase in concentration, the ability to relax more easily and physical and mental well being. There are a number of different styles of meditation and it is important to choose which one best suits your needs and which philosophy best suits your goals.

The different types of meditation can be broken down into four basic categories: 1) Concentration meditation- focussing on your breathing or an object. As the mind wanders bring it back to the object or your breathing. This can achieve a very calm and relaxed mental state. 2) Generative meditation- using your memory and the mind to create a state of kindness which in turn induces a feeling of well being. 3) Reflective meditation- focussing on your true thoughts and being aware of your feelings and emotions which result from this. Mindfulness meditation is what Buddhists refer to as vipassana. It is very popular and it is important not to analyse but let your true feelings show thus becoming more self aware. 4) Receptive meditation- being receptive to anything which comes from an experience Everybody is different and there are no rules to meditation. Maybe just give it a go and take 15 minutes away from your hectic life to relax. For those interested in meditation retreats, Wat Khao Tam offers 10 day silent retreats every month or so which are very popular and suitable for beginners or those experienced at meditating.

BEACHES

Koh Phangan has a contrasting landscape and the same can be said about it's beaches. There are idyllic white sandy beaches stretching around the island varying in character and atmosphere but always offer beautifully clear waters. Due to the tidal nature of Phangan, the best beaches for swimming tend to be on the north and east coasts. Whichever point on the compass you head for you will be treated to gorgeous coves and sandy stretches ideal for visitors seeking privacy, beach games or for those just happy to laze and take in the palm fringed scenery.

40

North Coast beaches vary in accessibility and you will be rewarded for the sometimes taxing journey with outstanding seascapes and an abundance of coral and marine life. Ao Haad Mae Haad has a vibrant array of coral features and offers stunning photo opportunities especially at low tide where a sand bar appears and it is possible to walk along it to the island of Koh Ma. Bottle Beach is a crescent shaped cove surrounded by lush mountain greenery and can be accessed either by boat from Chaloklum or by road from Thong Nai Pan - which itself offers beaches with stunning mountain backdrops. Thong Nai Pan’s north and south beaches have become a favorite hangout for those seeking the ultimate “chill out” spot and offer a true taste of paradise! West Coast beaches are all about snorkeling and sunsets! There are numerous small beaches to explore which have easy access by bike or on foot as well as longer stretches of white sand fringed with turquoise shallow water. Why not take your’ped north up the coastal road and explore some of the secluded beaches? Also keep an eye out for the outgrowing coconut tree....great for a photo at sunset! Haad Yao is a popular spot where you will find plenty of bars and restaurants on the beach playing “chilled out” tunes. Evening barbecues are often on the go and this long straight beach is a great place to socialize, play beach games or sip a cocktail at sunset! 41

South Coast beaches are made up of a series of tranquil bays and calmer shallow waters although the Haad Rin beaches can pick up some swell. Haad Rin has two stunning beaches either side of it’s peninsula which are ideal for swimming and if there are winds at sea or a storm is brewing waves and currents can develop. The eastern beach (Full Moon beach) is usually packed with bronzing bodies and has plenty of water sports and beach games to enjoy. If you fancy a burn on a jet ski or a game of volleyball then this is the place to head! The western beach is where you can escape the crowds, relax and enjoy the sunset. Ao Baan Tai is a long stretch of coastline also worth exploring. Beaches are easy to access, offer great views of Samui, outstanding sunsets and the opportunity to indulge in beach or water based fun. 42

East Coast beaches are not as accessible as others on Koh Phangan because of the cliffs and hills which surround this area. Haad Than Sadet is quite a mission on a moped but you’ll be rewarded once there with gorgeous scenery, a sea of various shades of blue and a stunning palm fringed beach. Haad Thian and Haad Yuan are dramatic, untamed spots which are home to picturesque sandy beaches backed by large granite boulders and rugged mountain forest. They are accessible by either a boat from Haad Rin or by 4x4 vehicle and are popular with the more “relaxed” backpacker due to the popular yoga center based in Haad Thian. This side of the island often picks up wind swell and currents in the water may trouble weak swimmers so don’t venture too near to any rocks and know your limits.

NIGHTLIFE

Party on The Island Koh Phangan has a fantastic array of entertainment options and a vibrant nightlife which can satisfy even the most hardcore of party animals! The island is always a happening place to be at night and comes alive with bars, live music, festivals and parties. The Full Moon Party is held on Haad Rin’s eastern beach and for those who haven't been...the party is INSANE!! During peak season up to 30,000 revelers descend on Koh Phangan from throughout Asia to party hard from dusk ‘till dawn in front of massive state of the art sound systems and light shows. Walking from one end of the beach to the other expect a blur of glow sticks and fluorescent body paint with people gyrating to every type of music imaginable. Beach access at night is 100 baht upon which you receive a colorful bracelet which you can keep for posterity (although when staying at some resorts in Haad Rin you won't need to pay). Dress up, paint that body and leave your inhibitions behind as this is a party that you'll never forget! Please be careful whilst partying and although there are medical facilities and “chill out” zones, party goers often stretch their limits too far. Do not buy drugs and keep an eye on your friends and belongings.

44

The Half Moon Party is located in the beautiful Baan Tai jungle and takes place one week either side of the infamous Full Moon Party. Prices for entry have increased to 300 baht and after being stamped you are entitled to a free drink. A high end sound system pumps out trance music and progressive beats which are supplied by the “Harmony Team”. A great atmosphere is created by decent djs, fire dancers and UV decorations. A guaranteed top night and not as hectic as Full Moon. Other Moon Parties: Another rocking party which attracts a good crowd is the monthly Black Moon Culture. Located on a white sandy beach in Baan Tai, this is a pretty well organized party with decent underground trance music and is a UV decorated venue...a good excuse to pay the 200 baht entry fee and crack open the body paint! Also worth checking out is the jungle based Shiva Moon Party and the Pirate Bar

Full Moon Party Schedule Date 2011 Moon Set Party which takes place near Srithanu and is a more chilled out social affair. Keep an eye out for signs which are placed around the sland indicating when the parties are. Haad Rin is the focal point of Koh Phangan’s nightlife and it is here that you’ll find the largest number of beach bars and clubs pumping out every genre of music from cheesy pop anthems to psytrance and drum&base. On the beach “bucket bars”, fire shows and organized party games will keep you occupied before you dance the night away under the stars. Baan Tai on the south west coast has a busy and vibrant road where you can find plenty of things to do when the sun goes down. It is here that you’ll find the majority of “lady bars” on the island if you fancy a game of pool and a bit of female attention! You will also find a few other decent bars and live music venues which feature open mic nights and well known Thai and farrang performers.

Other late night options spread around the island include the sports bars and pool halls where you can catch up with your favorite team, karaoke bars and other resort parties- for example pool parties and such like. Just keep an eye out for posters and fliers and speak to other travelers as there is always something on offer for the party animals or night owls! Some other nights out which the Navigator can recommend are Tuesdays at Eden Bar in Haad Yuan, Fridays at Guy's Bar in Haad Thian and Anahata on Saturdays which is located in Baan Khai.

VISA INFO

This is an often complicated issue and we thoroughly recommend that you check with your country's embassy regarding how long you can stay in the Kingdom. There are different rules and regulations for each nationality concerning Tourist visas and visa extensions. Rules are ever changing so always seek advice whether it is from an embassy, a travel agent or other backpackers. Entering Thailand: Upon entering Thailand you will receive a visa on arrival. If flying into an international airport a visa of 30 days will be granted and if crossing the border overland you will be granted a 5 day stay. On arrival your passport will be stamped with two dates: your entry date and the date at which you will need to leave the country or extend your visa It is possible to apply for a Tourist visa in advance in either your home country or a neighbor country. This visa allows the visitor to stay in the Kingdom for a period of 60 days ( which can be extended for a further 30 days if necessary at an immigration office) Overstaying your visa it will cost you 500 baht per day with a maximum fine of 20,000 baht which is payable to the Immigration Police upon your departure. It is not recommended to stay in the Kingdom as an illegal immigrant as this can affect your chances of returning to Thailand at a later date. Horror stories are often reported of holidaymakers being hit with nasty fines and even prison terms! 48 48

Visa Extensions: Koh Samui has the nearest immigration office. If you have a visa on arrival for either 30 days or 15 days then you can extend your exit date for a period of 7 days at a cost of 1,900 baht. If traveling on a 60 day Tourist visa it is possible to extend your stay by 30 days for the same price. For Samui extensions the immigration office is open from 08.30-16.30 from Monday to Friday and is located in Nathon. From Koh Phangan take a 250 baht boat in the morning over to Koh Samui and a 50 baht motorbike taxi to the immigration office. You will need to fill out some paperwork and hand over your passport for a fresh stamp along with a passport photo and photocopies of your passport pages. Visa Runs: IIf it is time to exit the country and the 7 day extension from Koh Samui isn’t long enough to suit your itinerary there are several options to choose from which will allow you to stay on Phangan or in Thailand for a longer period. It is possible to fly in and out of the country from either Koh Samui or Suratthani thus receiving another 30 day visa on arrival or you could cross the border overland into one of the neighboring countries receiving an extra 15 days. The land border crossing is the cheapest and most popular way of extending your visa. This can be be done at any bordering country but the most popular are Burma and Malaysia. At the time of printing it has been reported that some travelers who have crossed the Thai border overland 4 consecutive times have been refused re-entry to the Kingdom

so take this into account when planning this type of visa run. Burma visa run is the most popular option and you can either arrange it yourself or at one of the many travel agencies on Phangan at a cost of around 1,700 baht for a return fare. This involves taking the night boat from Thongsala to Suratthani and a minibus to the Burmese border. From here you will need to be stamped out of Thailand and take a long tail boat across the water and into Burma. You will need to barter for the boat and you should be able to reach a deal for about 200 baht for a return fare. You must also have a crisp 10 dollar bill to hand ove to the Burmese Immigration office for “administration. Be careful when you are in Burma and although you will only be there for half an hour there are a lot of pickpockets and hoodlums trying to sell drugs and pirated goods. Malaysia visa run is run by Mr Kim and is both fast and efficient. It involves an early start where you catch the 5am boat

from Thongsala but all travel is completed in 1 day and you will be back in Koh Phangan by around 8.30 in the evening. The cost for a minibus to the Malaysian border is 1900baht but you will need to pay for your boat tickets separately. Applying for a 60 day Tourist visa: It is hard not to fall in love with Thailand and Koh Phangan in particular! Therefore a 60 day visa is an option for longer term stays (this can then be extended by 30 days if required). To apply for a 60 day visa you will have to visit the Thai consulate in another country and fill out the necessary paperwork. Penang in Malaysia is the most popular and quickest way to receive your 60 day Tourist visa. You can make your way down to Penang by bus or train and one of the hostels there will be able to arrange the visa for you for a small administration fee. The trip usually only takes a couple of nights at the most and visa costs 100 RM which is equivalent of 1000 Thai Baht.
