This thesis explores how the exponential growth in communication technology is changing the way we interact with the tangible and intangible spaces. The invasion of the public into the private, the collective into the domestic, the work into the leisure, and the ability to be constantly connected wirelessly have caused a dissolution of the physical domestic space. The domestic space has lost its value of privacy and intimacy and the boundary between the binaries will be no more. The house is a place of production that is less defined by the tangible, but rather with the objects and technology within itself. The rise in communication technology has enabled us to do things that we never thought possible and the definition of the hearth in the domestic have evolved drastically. The hearth which used to be the fireplace in the house has evolved into a technologically advanced device that enables us to communicate and participate virtually as a collective. This thesis critiques the growth in communication technology and how it threatens the value of privacy within the domestic space. It envisions a dystopian future where users are prisoners to their technologies. The project addresses issues such as privacy and domesticity in a satirical way by constructing Hearth, a tech company and how it uses strategies to capitalize on its users.
5
Hearth is a company that provides housing to allow users to be fully immersed into the virtual world. It understand its users’ privacy, and strives to provide conveniency within the domestic realm. 6
PHANG LIM | DISSOLVING REALITIES
Programs within the domestic used to be divided strictly based on its designated function.
However, the introduction of communication technologies such as the radio and television, causes a blur between private, public, work and leisure.
As communication technology become so available, there’s no longer definition of space and programs within the domestic realm.
Hearth is powered by Hestia OS, named after the goddess of hearth in Greek mythology. It connects the Shell, Capsules and Services seamslessly to create an immersive virtual experience. 7

The backbone behind the users’ fabricated world is Hestopia, where it consists of different components to facilitate a better immersive virtual experience. Different programs such as the factories, dock and housing are designed to maximize productivity and efficiency. The users’ energy, food and capsules are all made and harvested locally, making it a self-sufficient city. Hestopia is strategically located at sites that are rich in natural resources such as silicon and copper to ensure a steady supply of material to store users’ data.

Southside Syracuse has been in a state of decay for decades since the decline in manufacturing jobs and the construction of I-81, which separated the city in two. On one side of the highway lays Syracuse University while the other consists of a community plagued with poverty and crime. The tension has been escalating and trust is needed within the community. Therefore, the Jones Family Life Center will act to bridge the gap the segregated spaces and represent the stability and safety of a community. The porject began by studying the surrounding context and vernacular which was mostly American Foursquare and Victorian housing. The reason to dive into the vernacular was not only because of its abundance in the immediate surrounding, but it would also provide a community center that is familiar and comforting to the residents. The formal aspects of these housing types was examined to imporve and to build upon it.

These ceremonial spaces must be welcoming and allow for a sense of familiarity; members will reunite to pursue their religious or political beliefs and create a new sense of community. 16

Designed as an adaptive reuse project on the site of Le Murate, a convent that became a prison, that is not a housing complex in Florence. The goal of the project is to conserve and respect the essence of Le Murate’s history by turning the former prison into a regulated architecture library for the University of Florence while preserving the site’s intended identity. The project reimagines the idea of a library through the lens of a prison. The formal language of the building was guided by the rituals a student or a prisoner when commiting a crime to probation, through the program in a library. The library amnities radiate from the exisiting center core that direct users to collections, reading rooms and social spaces. Small and large interventions were made to the site to complete the entire ritual cycle when using the library. So while the existing architectural conditions have been modified, the essential ritual of the site is being preserved: a prison, or now, a prison of knowledge. “The total demolition of any historic building seems unthinkable, even barbaric”. - Jorge Otero-Pailo

Similarly to a panopticon where surveillance could be achieved through it’s form, the intervention of Le Murate was inspired by the spirit of it where various programs and volumes extrude from the center core. A designated pathway was created too to reinforce the ritual and enable easy access for the students. 28

Smart Cities: Perspectives & Possibilities
This project aims to tackle the housing crisis in in Williamsburg, NY. Williamsburg is a neighborhood in Brooklyn where it has been going through massive gentrification throughout the past few years. The goal was to provide a new way of social living that promotes both affordable housing and quality living. The site is located at the current Domino park that was designed by SHoP architects where the buildings designed were out of scale compared to its surrounding context. They were able to achieve such great height through the manipulation of square footage, and at the same time respecting the FAR restrictions. A master plan was created in response to boost connectivity and accessibility to its surrounding context. Various buildings were proposed at the site such as residential, commerical and mixed use. Maximizing open and green spaces were the key consideration in the proposed masterplan. After designing the masterplan, site E was chosen to be developed further due to its complex nature. While taking the disconnect communities in apartment buildings into consideration, the projects aimed to not only reconnect the city fabric but also to build up further connections inside the housing project.

The proposal aims to empower the residents by providing them with a basic 10’x10’x10’ framework for mass customization and construction over the years. Residents will have the power and capability to configuring their houses to suit different family types, full freedom in deciding the size, program and aesthetic of their units. Beyond the domestic private space of the home, the project encourages the creation of a variety of public programs created and managed by the residents such as a meat market, a church or a school to augment the creation of a strong community. The contradiction in space between programs aims to create disorder within the order, chaos within the calm, lawlessness within the rigid. The grid allows the community to grow organically in all directions based on needs over time, and allows for flexibility and adaptability. The standardized part-to-whole system will accommodate the growing population efficiently by allowing the community to decide what’s best for them. The simple grid structure enables residents to pick their own location and size of their homeownership or businesses freely. There will be no zoning in specifying a residential area or a commercial space like the traditional superblock. A swimming pool below a church, or a house next to a meat market, the complexity and diversity in architecture style and language are embraced and it reflects the core spirit of the community. The (dis)order will be a self-sufficient superblock that will be created from the ground up by residents and individuality is celebrated within the community.

The project title “The Nameless” emphasizes on the theme of hope by representing the stories of the immigrants, the poor, the homeless, the marginalized, and the rejected of New York City. The chosen site was Hart Island, which serves as city’s potter’s field, and more than a million nameless were buried here. An open square with a capacity of 300,000 people was designed as a Spiritual Center that is shared by different religions and races; a place where everyone one can meet with their Gods and pray. Dear Nameless, The public has waited far too long to visit you. Your home, the Hart Island serves as New York City’s potter’s field, and more than a million nameless were buried here. Burials on the island include individuals who were not claimed by their families or did not have private funerals; the homeless and the indigent; and mass burials of disease victims. It represents the stories of New York’s immigrants, the poor, the homeless, the marginalized, and the rejected. Hart Island is for the nameless. The Nameless will be a place where one can commemorate you. The unbiased shape of the circle represents the notion of the self, the eternity and the totality of life. Building masses will be scattered around the site to support the continuous roof, and at the same time, showing the axis to the memorial. Death may be painful for everyone, but it will unite us, regardless of ethnicity or religion. Despite the chaos in today’s society, there is still hope in the place of the unknown. The Nameless will be a common ground for all. Love, Nameless
