Introduction

Studio 13, explores the embodiment of the activities chosen in the first few weeks. The modality of calligraphy is chosen to practice and using the movement to be the main principle in designing the architecture in the site at 129 Elgin Street, Melbourne, Australia. Each week explores the sequence in the atmosphere through study models and sketches to develop into a full project during the final week.

Story Board Excercise Perosonal Experience of embodiment: The first task in class is an exercise of creating a storyboard of different types of spaces. The first panel is the arrival at the aquarium where the journey requires going underground. Next is the entry at the Pantheon where the scale of the dome overscale my height, creating a grand entry. The third is the moment where light passes down the tree creating a soft ambient light in the park. The fourth scribble is similar to the Pantheon, but a church where the smell is and lighting sets up a mood for religious atmosphere. Lastly is an arrival at the art exhibition by Olafur Elison at the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art.

Group work: Create an Experience Later break-out rooms were assigned, and our task is to create a series of images to recreate the richest embodied experience. We decided to go with the idea of climbing up the mountain and experience the tiredness and adrenaline rush while climbing before reaching the goal, which is the mountain where the reward is the panoramic view of the mountain top. This sequence creates a sense of reward after putting in the work from walking to the mountain, passing the forest, resting, climbing, and then reaching the top.

Process:

The process of this project starts from choosing a service of a 5-star hotel, and create a process operated into the architecture. In this project, the act of online booking is used as a concept-driven throughout the project on a hotel that will be renovated for future use.

Phase 1. Create a visual diagram of the process of online booking

Phase 4. Apply to Site/ Massing

Reflective Review Major decisions and how they are made? To renovate or create a new architecture, in the end, the choice is to keep the building and design an add-on system into the building. Strength and future improvement Strenght=gives the room more typology space, improvement can be on the aesthetics.

Phase 2. Space Configuration

Phase 5. Proposal

Where the major design desition is made During the initial design phase: to decide which part to modify the hotel. Why did the choice was made? Successful or not? Why? To keep the visual silhouette of the building. No, the bulkiness and digital facade made the building look hectic and visual interruption. Set way of ideas for design? The concept was to create a module pod extending the rooms of the existing hotel, which is too small for the contemporary time. If I could do the project again what would you do differently? I would work more on the visual aesthetics of the tower, maybe choose to create a new tower that will enhance the old one.

Modality Tracking Modality Tracking: Inking an Illustration The chosen modality is the act of inking an illustration piece because it is an activity that I have now done a while since starting school. It is a good habit for me because it improves focus and concentration in the morning before starting the day. What I did for the diagram is to illustrate 5 images of the lighting, and the state of mind sequence during the activities.

Feedback: The digram was portrayed in a very architectural way which could be improved if the tracking diagram is focused on the movement of the arms and hand when inking the illustration. Also, the lighting can be drawn as it hits the body instead of the whole room.

Modality Tracking Exercise Five assigned modalities are further explored, The goal is to capture the overall feeling and create something expressive and abstract. The movement will be captured using colors and line drawings to illustrate the activities.

Calligraphy, Watercolor, Makers

Ballet, Pastel Chalk

Wrestling, Watercolor, Graphite

Argentine Tango, Watercolor, Graphite

Salso Watercolor, Graphite

Feedback: I receive positive feedback on this exercise due to its expressive approach. I use a different color to portray different moods for the activities and foreshortening to show scales in the drawings.

Studio 13: Embody

3 Main Ideas: Hand Eye cordination I am fascinated with the act of using the hand-eye coordination of the human body. From music, drawing, calligraphy, sculpture requires the skill of seeing things, comprehend them in your mind and produce the result with your hands.

Interest From the exercise, I have done. I am most interested in calligraphy the most because it can link to the methods of inking an illustration in exercise 1. The modality requires patience and focus to produce the strokes to be straight and communicate well by combining with other strokes from shoulder to elbow to wrist to create one letter.

Tectonics I am interested in utilizing natural light in architecture and using timber as a material to diffuse light. Also, timber can respond to comfort and natural aesthetic in architecture. Also, the tectonics of timber is flexible from large blocks to planks, batten, sticks, and panels. This allows architecture to be flexible in use.

Reflection

First Attempt

Second Attempt

It was difficult to start at first due to no experience with all the 5 modalities. The calligraphy was the most difficult to express because of its structure language that builds up into the calligraphy. I practiced with Thai and Old English calligraphy with a 45-degree angle pen to imitate the speedball nip. Salsa and Argentine were new to me so it was quite interesting to analyze the styles and movement of the dances. The attempt for the calligraphy was to use the stokes of the speed-ball calligraphy method to show the movement. The most interesting part is how much the pen can do by just tilting the movement of the arm. The most frustrating part about the process is that the ideas when put on paper do not match what I have in my head. For example, I still project the abstract in plans rather than the close-up gesture of the modality. This decision is made unconsciously and realized later after hours of doing. the positive aspect of this is at least I know the thought process and be improved. However, it would take a few more hours to amend those ideas. For example, in the exercise, the first attempt was illustrated through top view, which is less engaging compared to the second attempt, which is made after some thought to create a more impactful expression of the modality.

15

Studio 13: Embody

1. Approach: Plane/Line Gathering Space The approach to the design is to create a sense of openness into the space for practicing calligraphy. The space will support the calmness and open spaces for multipurpose events for different calligraphy methods. This scheme supports flow and openness through gaps of the column lines which can enter from anywhere. Also with a tall height of the some creates a sense of openness, which enhances the free space into the atmosphere.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection (Aug/6/2021) Since it was the first design, the approach was a bit straightforward and did not express that much atmosphere. The gathering space still lacks the sense of place when linking to the idea of calligraphy. Overall the form is symmetrical and balances which do not respond to the form of calligraphy, which deals with unevenness

16

Week 2: Aug/3/2021

Studio 13: Embody

2. Approach: Plane/Mass: Activity Space The second approach is to create a sense of space where light can shine through a spot creating an effect similar to an oculus. This will focus the light into a certain place separate the shadows to the other side. The tectonic properties of the stacking mass also give allows the floor plan to change creating a different hierarchy of space that can be a transition through the building. For example, large stairs can function as furniture. This allows the body to interact with the space

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The stacking forms are still in the realm of symmetry, which lacks the dynamic movement to express the modality. It would be better if the form could assist the flow and strokes of calligraphy.

Week 2: Aug/3/2021

Studio 13: Embody

3. Approach: Line/Mass: Activity/Gathering Space The model uses the same tectonic methods with lines and mass but with a different arrangement. The mass creates a floating effect by supporting the lines. The atmosphere that is being tested is the idea of floating the mass to create a free floor plan. The intent was to create a sense of stillness for the activity calligraphy. By doing these five model sketches the idea of meditation in calligraphy is potential to refine the details further.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection (Aug/6/2021) The idea is still in the realm of my comfort zone, which is hard for me to break out. Looking back the massing can be quite heavy and block the lighting rather than creating a good shading.

18

Week 2: Aug/3/2021

Studio 13: Embody

4. Approach: Line/Mass: Activity/Gathering Space The process is to create a combination of thickness and thinness to create a transition between private and public spaces. The thickness of mass functions as partition block views from all sides. On the contrary, the lines create openness to invite people into the space.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection Similar to the third model, this version is combined with lines and makes the light shines through. However, I am not sure how it will respond to the selected modality of calligraphy.

5. Approach: Line/Mass: Activity/Gathering Space The idea for the schematic is to create a different way to let light into architecture by unfolding the planes to create space for light to shine. The planes block the light the create shading along the planes while. Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The last schematic is the most successful one among the four schemes. Not because it is the “best”, but it is a good response to the modality of calligraphy.

6. Approach: Planes: Gathering Space I want to explore further the models that were made last week. The planes are cut to give the shadows more shape and give the shadows more angle as they shine inside the box. Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection This version portrays a clear tectonic atmosphere than the one before because it has more cast shadows, which created shapes and dynamic qualities into the model.

7. Approach: Curve Planes: Gathering Space I tried to find a new approach to break the symmetrical model from the first 4 models. The atmosphere that I want to achieve is to create a space that uses the line movement of calligraphy. The way the planes are cut and branch out allows the form to have connecting parts, which create continuity to the space.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection This is the first model I made so there are still no clear intentions what shape it would be. The intention was to create a space that has flow and is not symmetrical. The outcome was interesting because it cast a shadow that supports the curve plane, bringing more dimension into the space.

Week 2: Aug/10/2021

Studio 13: Embody

8. Approach: Curve Planes: Gathering Space After I took some time reading the essay In praise of shadows, the idea of using shadows to reveal certain things is quite interesting to explore. The alcove in Japanese architecture needs to be located in the shadows to reveal its beauty without fully lit. That idea is also used in this model. The cast shadow acts as a line that draws into the alcove, which is in the shadows creating a sense of destination at the path that the shadow is made.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The flexibility of the paper allows the model to create a smoother curve. I did a lot of bending paper until I end up with the current one. The result is a overlap, and created a pocket of space that is similar to an alcove when looking through the gaps.

Week 2: Aug/10/2021

8. Approach: Curve Planes: Path I am still exploring shadows with curved planes and how it reacts on the ground. These models deal with three planes that unfold from the main form. Surprisingly when the subform is cut, the form stands on its own with the balance of curve. The shadow of the curve is base on the upward stroke of calligraphy, giving it an ascending curve.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The model in this method produces good lines. The curves seem to serve the purpose of visual quality more than defining the space. Space quality can be used to improve the atmosphere of the space.

8. Approach: Curve Planes: Gathering Space The gathering space in this model consists of curved fins that created a movement to give a sense of flow to the space. the monumental approach is used to bring interest to the space. However, there is no intention to give function to it yet since this stage seems to be quite abstract, and most of the processes are done intuitively, which has no solid goal in mind.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The curves came out better in the photographs rather than the actual model itself. The overall image has a sense of mass and fluidity in the space. However, I would like to use the continuous form as a functional area rather than an aesthetic piece in the space.

Week 2: Aug/10/2021

Initial Approach First interest:

Black lettering or old English font is one of the most famous and basic types of calligraphy to practice. The attractiveness is the combination of hard angle strokes combined with curves that consist of thick and thin strokes that give the lettering dimension compared to the curve types. However, the limitation of the method is it is slow and considered as a “drawing” of letters instead of writing it. Overall the process required time and perfection to create a clean/ crisp line.

Spencerian/ Copperscript Compared to Black lettering

Spencerian/ Copperscript is a lot thinner with less shading, and also a continuous flow. Among these two Copperscipt is thicker in the shading area. Copper script and older than Spencerian and have been using in product logos and graphic design. The text has been simplified into the version known as the Palmer Method and has been taught in elementary school since the 19th century. Fig 2. Spencerian

Week 2: Aug/10/2021

Simplify Modern Calligraphy The alphabet for calligraphy consists of 9 strokes that will be combined to form an alphabet. The lines are curved with a 45-degree straight line. Although calligraphy. Calligraphy requires “a single pass of the pen/tool to write as a form of art” (Tsui). This allows the stroke to have pressure cause the lines to have a variety of thick and thin dimensions. The fundamentals are taken from Copperplate, Spencerian, scripts. The traditional method required specific tools, measurements, and standards that do not suit the situation and location to be practiced in. The main goal is to keep the curve, variety, and contrast in the letters.

Fig 3. Basic strokes of modern calligraphy

Tool: In modern calligraphy, tools are more flexible than using a specific pen and ink. For my case, brush tip and flat edge markers will be enough to start practicing the strokes.

Adapt Adaptation of strokes Fig. 5. Scriptina, one of the styles in modern calligraphy

The main accent of the method is to keep the weight consistent. The standard of the stock is when the pen goes up the lines are thin and it gets thicket as it goes down. Sometimes when tools are limited faux calligraphy is used to imitate the thickness of the lines This leaves room for stylization and adapts to the preferred visual appeals of the letters.

Modality Practice : Calligraphy

1. Arrival

2. Setting

3. Process

When starting I need to prepare lines for the paper to keep the calligraphy consistent. For a beginner, the mindset is to be open-minded and accept failure that will keep coming. Calligraphy is easy to do but takes effort to achieve the level where it can be written.

Fortunately, I have a drawing board, which will help in terms of creating lines and provide a large area to create strokes that require wide shoulder moving to keep the curves consistent.

In calligraphy strokes order are essential. So in this initial phase, I need to practice creating strokes that will later use as an alphabet and hopefully write letters with them.

4. Movement

5.Influence

6. Result

By using Black lettering as an example for the practice, the strokes require vertical strokes. Three lines are in the calligraphy space, the Baseline (bottom), Waistline (Mid), and Ascending line (top).

Influence such as the silence in the morning before it gets loud is the best time to practice in this environment other wise I will be distracted. Also, the temperature and the morning light bring a moment of escape from the daily task that needs to be done before the sun fully rises.

As a complete beginner, the results will not be as satisfying. I am surprised that it is harder than it looks especially how the lines are flowing correcting as expected. However, I hope the process will help my hands are more stable and a least creating some lettering out of it.

Studio 13: Embody

Week 2: Aug/10/2021

Week 2 Reflection

6. There are ideas that I would reconsider into other parts of the object. I would not consider them as “bad“, but I would use them somewhere else. I would avoid creating models that will not respond to the modality of calligraphy.

1. At this stage I am still unsure what I have improved. However, after some feedback from my studio mate, I have some more direction to further explore my model. For the next coming week, I can improve by using the models that I already made and adapt them to refine the atmosphere

7. The technique that I felt more comfortable with is the way I carve out the curves from the foam board. At first, it was quite difficult to control the line, but I just let go and trust the intuition and let the result be in the model.

2. My most productive phase this week is using more curvature form, which gives a much more dramatic atmospheric quality into the photographs. This will make a further approach to my model making more intuitive.

8. If I could do the week again, I would spend more time practicing the modality to under more about the strokes and curves of the calligraphy so that I could make it easier to translate to my models.

3. I enjoy the research project on calligraphy the most. It gives me a clear insight into how the models should be to respond to the calligraphy. The use of shadow shapes and curvature can be used in further models to test out different options in the model. 4. I am quite stuck on getting the cast shadow to form dynamic shapes. I tried to solve it by cutting more plans, which solve some of the issues that I was having earlier. In the future, I can modify the plane to make the process smoother when taking the photographs. 5. After introducing the curvature into the models, I will be using them more in the models to achieve the dynamic lines in the photographs.

31

Studio 13: Embody

Week 3: Aug/13/2021

11. Approach: Front Light: Gathering Space Developed from the previous model, the plane that was cut creates shapes in the cast shadow. I use the same model but add more cut for light to diffuse as it hits on each plan creating a softer shadow that will create an opening for light to shine in. In this method, I have more control to decide whine planes to becut base on where the light is shine.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The plane for the ceiling can explore more, and it might show more shadow shapes into the space. The lighting sequence has the potential to explore more in more curvilinear planes.

Week 3: Aug/13/2021

12. Approach: Front Light: Path I want to explore the 3 layered cuts from the previous model and combined them with a more curved plane to see if there will be more dimensions to the curves. As light shines in both planes the light brings out the depth of the curves. The front light is used since it brings the sense of destination in a space that has a path quality.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection This schematic responds well well with calligraphy lines that balance the straight and the curve lines. The shadows bring out the depth of each plane into the space. Also with the assistance of the front light gives a sense of direction leading the user to its place.

Week 3: Aug/13/2021

13. Approach: Front Light: Path The previous model has planes that make the light too harsh, so I tried to simplify the curve to find a wall to soften the light. This strategy is similar to the previous ones, but this one has a more diffused quality. Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection The simple curve provides a diffuse atmosphere into the path creating a calm environment as moving passes by the passage. Most of my previous models deal a lot with complex plane shape, so I want to try to keep things more simple this time.

14. Approach: Front Light: Gathering Space I want to find more potential in the folding planes of the models i made. I added a third plane, which is a arch element to see what will happen in the lighting. The result is just the framing has change while the lighing is similar to other previous ones Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection I began to run out of ideas in this method, so I cut out some shapes to see what the cast shadows will look like. The result was quite mediocre compared to the other ones.

15. Approach: Top: Mix Space A combination of both approaches is used in this model. The result was a bit chaotic compared to the other ones I have made. The shadow was also messy since the light hit on a different plane and gathers the shadow on a narrow floor. In terms of lighting, this model shows that putting too much plane will create space that is unclear. However, the form it creates can bring potential in space planning.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection Although the combination creates complex cast shadows, somehow it lacks a clear sense of direction. However, it might be potential in further phases of the project.

On the other hand, Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) has more flow in the strokes that bounce around the paper and is more expressive more than readability. Both require practice from strokes to the particular layout to create a composition with a different hierarchy to give meaning to the texts.

Meditative Quality The brushwork is a challenge to control so the calligrapher requires focus and planning before doing the strokes. The process gives a meditative quality into the modality, which helps concentration and calms down the stress. Then the act of brushwork can be intuitive and express through large brushwork, creating a piece of work that comes from the movement and in the end express the meaning of the word through the steps the calligrapher takes.

Wall / Floor Modality onto Space Performance calligraphy requires larger space and different types of working planes depending on the artist’s performance. From ceremonial or contemporary Shodo, the movement of the strokes is pure, bold, expressive, which requires space for those movements to perform on the canvas.

Project Brief

The embodiment of calligraphy consists of a variety of line construction from different strokes from the movement of the arm and also the concentration of the mind. Located near the University of Melbourne, the objective of the program is to provide a retreat and an introduction to the art of calligraphy. From Old English text to Arabic and Asian Calligraphy, the space provide a range of resources and facility for people to experience and learn some skills to practice. The space will provide a platform for practicing Old English script with pen nib to a Japanese Shodo style that can require a larger brush that requires a large area of movement. The architecture provides an area for participants in calligraphy and so regular individuals who are interested in the art of writing.

Week 3 Reflection

5.

1.

The task for the first 4 weeks is mostly making study models. It was difficult for me in this phase because models have limitations I am not sure how I will reach the goal when I am designing these spaces. The process was intuitive by flipping, cutting and constants remind me not to work on it for too long since it was just a study model. With limited tools, I need to find a way to problem solve by using what I have and with the atmosphere that links to my modality.

I have good insight when I have my studio mates give me genuine feedback. They recommend I explore more in the ceiling plane. It is a good way to learn from them and use it to improve the weakness I have, which is the composition of the planes of straight and curve lines. I managed to take the advice and apply it in two more exercises, which develops more on the sense of bringing contrast to the atmosphere models. As I am reflecting on some of my models, I would not consider them a bad idea. The unused model doesn’t respond to the specific tasks and programs in the project. I would keep them behind my mind and use them later for other projects.

2.

6.

My most productive was when I started to create more models so that I can use the same part and modify it to make a new variation. This allows me to create more versions of the model similar to a lego block. 3.

Over the weeks, I have improved in terms of using the same models to generate ideas to save up time and explore potential from what I already have. However, I would like to improve more on the composition of cast shadows. I could improve this by creating new shapes into the planes and explore how it will benefit my modality. Further more the readings from In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki has guided me through using shadows to draw in the spaces. 7.

I mostly enjoy the research on the different types of calligraphy, and observe the calligraphy performance on the internet. Also starting the modality is enjoyable. As I am reflecting, The task generated a good outcome is because it is something new and out of my comfort zone. The process was intuitive, which allows more creativity than thinking with logic in the beginning process.

If I could do the week again I would spend more time making models that do not require a lot of labor. For example, I would not cut foam and stack them up to create space and use individual sticks to layout the gradients of the shadows. Instead, I would explore more on the composition of the curved lines, and make them from thinner foam and paper, and stack them up and see what effects it can provide me. This will save up time and I could focus on my planning of the modality instead.

4. The most challenging idea for me in this past week is getting the model to shape as I wanted in my mind. After some attempts, I realized that it will not be that way because they are physical limitations of the material compared to the atmosphere I have from imagination, which causes me to be disappointed in many attempts. In the end, I just have to accept the process and not expect much what the models will be when it is done and accept it as a study model.

8. The site collages has set up a good base for developtping the further. As a designer, a good narrative and story in a good way to introduce the project in order to have meaning response to the context. In this case setting up an calligraphy atelier will functions as a unification of the art of writing from the diveristy in cultures in Carton. 46

17. Approach: Curve Planes: Path I want to explore more on the tectonic of the curves, which I use to create more dynamic lines. This time I was able to control the curves from testing out the cutting methods. The model is a refinement of model no.8 that was made out of paper, but this time it was an experiment with more rigid planes.

Week 4 Reflection

5.

1.

Some bad ideas came from the repetitive process of making the models, which leads to similar ideas. I want to improve my skill in generate quick ideas and evaluathem before i moev on to the next one.

The workflow of this week is way much better than the last few weeks because of the experience I was able to re-use the models to refine the existing idea.

6.

2.

This week, I was able to grasp a sense of lighting by shining light on the models and see where the light shines best. This took a while, but It starts to make sense after week 3 when I need to find a way to carve out the shadow shapes with light

The overall productivity came from the methods of adapting the parts of the existing models. As a designer, it is a very efficient way to iterate more ideas without losing the sense of the main concept.

7.

3.

If I could redo the week again I would spend more time explore more forms of the bubble diagrams. I was a bit fixate with the outdoor court that might ruin the overall for of the building. Also, I would spend time organized the areas and my sketch neater.

This week, I enjoy the bubble diagrams the most. The reason is sketching out ideas with no limitations of the technical aspect allows full creativity and is less stressful. 4.

8.

After the second iteration, the process was quite bland and repetitive. I notice that it is the moment I am stuck with but i manage to push it through by making new pieces instaed of using the same one.

I look forward in the future to incorporate the balance of curves and straight angle to communicate the space for calligrapphy and use the vertically of the building to connect to space together.

5.

9.

By doing the bubble diagrams, I noticed the context and the site perimeter better than doing the models. This allows clear objectives. For example, I was able to lay in the exhibition hall and the performance platform on the site better than doing the models.

Up unitl week 4, most of the assignment are model making. With less digital tools I did explore much on the digital side. However, throug model making I found that It is not an efficient way for me, but it does create some forms faster than digital models

The transparency is use to connect the outdoor and indoor space. The building serves as a multipurpose space for people to enjoy the landscape of the farm. The curvature blends in with the landscape to create visual harmony to the views, instead of using boxes as the geometry. The glass walls disappears as it transfer to the outdoor space letting people walk pass through the architecture. Although the building is larger compare to the sight at Elgin street, the conceptual of fluidity and responding to the land can be use in the future design.

Facade Precedent Study 2 Stratum House (2017) Stpmj

In this project, I have look into the materiality of the facade. The layered concrete give the rectangular-shape more dimensions with the curves and unevenness of the pouring of the concrete. This can be use in private areas such as the classrooms where it will be suitable not to reveal too much for students privacy. In terms of functional use the layered concrete has the similar qualities as regular concrete, but the layers depends on the ratio and formula of the compound. However, in the use in this project, the aesthetic quality is the main target to use in areas with less engagement with the outdoor.

Facade Precedent Study 3

Chapel of Reconciliation, Berlin, Germany (1990) Martin Rauch, Rudolf Reitermann, Peter Sassenroth The key features of the building is the timber battens that were laid along the curve line if the walls. The semi transparent quality creates a sense of dramatic lighting to describe the atmosphere of the church, yet humble with the use of material. Timber brings out the softer tone and a good device for shading due to its thermal conductivity qualities.

Studio 13: Embody

The challenge in these sketches is how could I solve the problem of using curve lines as a way to express the modality into the architecture.

I am quite stuck in this scheme because of the rooms are all constraint into the path that has been made.

This plan diagrams is the first attempt to explore more ideas. The blue on the left is the exhibition space which wraps around the building creating a path which ends at the shop.

My second variation is to simplify the calligraphy stokes and use it as a path into different programs. My issue with it is the rooms will not be ass freely as it is already defined by the path. After some sessions with the tutor, I will try to reverse the idea by letting the activities be the flow and make the architecture more structure 63

Studio 13: Embody

I felt more ideas could come up when I started doing the section. The programs has more flow interms of verticality and Its is much easier to see all the programs interact with different space. I focus on the connection between the exhibition space and how I can can end up at the shop. After some feed back it is recommend to reduce the massing at the left due to the residential near by could get some sunlight and also the front of shop does not need to be push back.

The development of the scheme focuses on the central courtyard similar to the first one. However, by creating a fillet on the blocks provides a softer/smoother tone rather than sharp angles from the sketch at the top of the page. Although I felt it was visual pleasing I need to sketch more to see how it could translate into the plan drawings

The perspective section provides a good sense of depth in the room with from the indoor and the outdoor space. The style uses photographs collage which give a realistic look, yet abstract ans conceptual into the building. The collage also bring liveliness and human activity into the space.

The color used in the section clearly separates the space inside with warmer tone, while the outdoor is more cooler. The contrast give a good visual order which balances the soft/muted color scheme. The line weight also adds the clarity of the architectural element into the presentation.

The use of tones creates depth into the section and reduced the distraction of color. The style focuses on only the space and partition of the building which is clearly illustrated with line weight. However, it lacks the activities of people inside the building.

Week 5 Reflection

5.

1.

Also, I don’t need to think the plan as a curvature of a calligraphy line. Possible ideas should be designing the building as the grid and let the people and activity be the action inside the structured grid.

The task for this week was quite difficult to manage. From doing test models to creating plans/section and also the collage diagram. The strategy is to focus on the plans/ sections since there a lot of study model already.

6. 2.

During the sketch process, I find the sections to be more successful because of the multi-level that I can explore with. Compared to the plans which is not quite successful due to its two dimension approach. This can be avoid if I start with a section and transfer the information into the plan.

The model making was less difficult to do, but it still does take some time to organized and find the right view. This week I should be focusing on the idea exploration of the programs and refine them by doing plan and sections sketches in scale with the site

7.

3.

Sketching out ideas has been more productive more than model making for me. If I have the chance to do the week again, I would focus more on the section layout along with the plan. For the models, I improved in idea variation, but I need to be more experimental and making the process more faster.

I enjoy the sketching to most. It gave me more creative freedom and the potential to explore space configuration compare to the model making method which focuses on atmosphere. Sketching will always be one of the best way to explore ideas with less investment in time and materials

8.

4.

In the next phase I need to focus more on the programs and explore different paths and focus on the in-between levels in different rooms. Also, I would like to explore more in terms of the courtyard/outdoor to create potential for brining people into the building.

The challenges for this week is translating the modality to the plans to create actual programs. I have been stuck in the though of creating the programs with curve shapes. This causes awkward shapes that is creates unusable rooms.

9.

5.

Week 5 starts to explore more on the architectural side and the abstract aspect starts to translate into space which will respond to the modality. It was good to explore possibility with the study model at first, but from this point I would be useful to start focusing on the drawings.

During the week, one of the insights I found helpful is to rethink the “curve wall” as not just only a solid wall with curve angles but it should be other architecture elements such as the column that sits along the curve instead.

The material provides natural quialities into the space, creating a sense of linkage with the nature which soften the tone of the overall atmosphere. The project “Twisting courtyard” uses timber to enhance the natural light as it shine into the building.

The material gives a sense of darkness without being true black and it can provide contrast with the light tone of the timber use in the interior space. Also it has a fire resistance property which provide fire safety for the architecture and longer life span for the wood.

The material was selected to emphasis on the boldness and heavy stroke. By creating opening for light creates an atmospheric rhythm into the facade. The use could be applied on space that require more privacy or to create darkness to focuses on the lighting.

The method I tried to create is to use a triangle composition from two plans and switch it around creating a gap which lets the light in.

Overall View

Feed Back/ Reflection I find the process experimental because I did not intend for outcome at the beginning. What I did is try to fold the planes to give it more mass rather than using a rectangular blocks for the timber screens.

L3

The intention of the ground floor plan is to create a calligraphy shop and a exhibition area to showcase the collection of artworks and tools use in doing calligraphy. The courtyard can be seen through small opening inviting people to come in and introduce the art form of calligraphy. I find this a good balance to bring people’s interest in to the building

More privacy occurs in the third floor where gardens and private study rooms are located. Also the library continues to this floor to support the classroom with source materials. Along the void is where calligrapher can learn as a community outdoor as well. The classroom space could be explore more in terms of the space configuration.

The Exhibition continues at the second floor and overlaps the library area. On the north wing is the calligraphy library which supports both beginner and experts in calligraphy along the building in the classroom. I still need to revist how the exhibition can bring people to the shop.

The main key feature is the courtyard for the performance/demonstrations. The engawa space which is platform that calligrapher can sit and embrace the gardenspace inside the building. I will need to re-adjust some space in Rhino to position the space in scale. 73

Week 6 Interim Reflection 01

5.

1.

Some of the bad ideas come from rushing through the process to finish the drawings. This makes the space have inconsistency amongst the plans and sections. Also, the ideas start to lean toward subjective topics such as “using line strokes as the wall.” It is difficult to break through and is something I have to revise.

The workflow of the interim was different than other studios I have experienced. All my drawings are hand-drawn which I am concerned about my skill to explain my ideas. In the past studios, I use Cad drawings with computer-generated graphics. It was fun to use an analog tool but difficult to maintain the same details in all the images.

6. 2.

During this week, I have improved my time management between my drawings. Although my drawing skills remain the same, I was able to finish my drawings and not let one draw consume all the working hours. This method produced more interior drawings that communicate with the audience faster than computer renderings.

During this phase I consider the hand-drawn process to be productive because I don’t need to worry about working on different programs. I just need to focus on the drawings and post-production to make to drawing more clear. However, in the future, I would not be using this method in my final presentation because my design will need to be put into computer 3d models to solidify the architectural logic.

7. I want to improve my space managing skill and also simplify complex ideas. It is still a challenge to balance the curvatures into and structured programs into the building. The 5*5 grid that I use allows the building to be more structured, but when using curve lines, the space begins to have pockets of awkward shapes.

3. I enjoy hand drawing, even though the pressure of the deliverable for the interim made me rush some of the design thinking and end up making the long section too busy with the activity.

8.

4.

This interim allows me to explore more on the hand drawing side. However, there are limitations such as accuracy and the lack of creating a 3d form. Hopefully, the drawings were strong enough to express the ideas as a foundation for my future projects.

I still struggle to combine the plans and the long section into a clear architectural sense. The recommendation from the tutor is to refine the ideas by redrawing them again and take out unnecessary things.

9.

5.

In the next phase, I need to find a way to refine my drawings and start to model it in 3d to see the actual massing of the images. Also I need to make the ideas less subjestive about the calligraphy strokes and look deepter into what aspects I can take to develop further into the architecture.

Good ideas come from re-doing the schematic and rework on them. One of the moments I found is that after I finish my plans, I redo my section and found out some of the spatial configurations that I can make happen. Then I come back to the plans and redraw the areas that I make in the section.

Plan revisit The refinement of the plan focuses on the lines of the walls that bends and curves to the form the calligraphy line strokes. This creates a dynamic movement into the building. The plan of the shop is still layout along the grid structure which makes the rooms more rectilinear and lack the sense of flow. What I manage to do is to create more curve-lines in to the plan and sort out the spaces where the shop leads the user to different places On L2 I introduce diagonal lines and link them to the courtyard space guides the use to the library L3 focuses more on privacy. The rooms are smaller for individual but manage to reconnects with third level of the courtyard

Week 7 Reflection

5.

1.

Some colors scheme that are bad came from the thought of using color that effects the space. For example, by using darker colors on walls create a narrower atmosphere. However in some areas it create more depth. By not choosing the right color can create a space that was not intended to be.

The workflow explores the colors combination is a challenging task. The workflow was to create a system that allows me to change the color by just tweaking the color adjustment layer in Photoshop. Once the layers are all set, the colors are easier to manage.

6. 2.

I have improved my sense of using color more by narrowing down options and stick with the natural tones. Aside from that I still need to improve the skills find the relationship between the modality and the shape of the spaces in the building. At this point my made from amended sketches for testing it out in Rhino

Once the layers are organized, I was able to adjust the colors according to the reference pallet. This makes the process more about experimental rather than finding the correct tones. The key aspect of making the process more productive is shifting between similar tones, creating a harmonious relationship between each color.

7. From my struggles in the interim. I want to improve on refining my designs to make the space more connected to the modality. I want to be more loose yet concise with my line drawing to portray an understanding of the spaces.

3. The experiment of color relationship makes the process more enjoyable. The reason is I have a certain image in my mind so when it come to choosing color I have a limited palette. This makes the choice more narrow so I can focus more on the selected color combination

8. I want to create more plan and section that connects with the modality. If I could go back I want to focus more on the activities that embraces the courtyard and how the calligraphy can be drawn around the area to connect with the outdoor space.

4. In the color exercise, I am stuck at choosing different tone of colors. Brown is a difficult color to deal with to create a dynamic atmosphere. So to counter that, I use green from the garden to create a sense of cooler tone to balance out the brown.

9. I will be testing out the spaces that I drew on the plans in Rhino to get a sense of space in 3d and use the new space to create a new images for the color exercises. I would like to explore more on the engawa space that creates a sense of connection with the courtyard in the middle of the building.

5. By focusing on natural material, it narrows down my choices which create good ideas. Also by choosing good reference color palette also help to create a guideline when choosing colors. In the future I will use these palette and mix it when some texture to emphasize the materials.

Light and Dark The objective of the diagrams is to identify where the light hits the most during the day. Areas such as the calligraphy store and library/workshop above receives the most sunlight through out the day due to its orientation facing the north. This creates a challenge for the room to control light as people work. Also in the courtyard will receive direct sunlight which need to be control as well. The idea is to use materials to diffuse the harsh sunlight so that the space could be more dimmed and create a ofter atmospheric value. My understanding that their would be overhangs and sun finns involve with the design solution to control the light intake during the day

Steel Grove / ar-Architects (2017)

The project explores with the facade arrangement at the south to control the sunlight while opening up to the neighboring context. The variety of pipe sizes allows multiple visual tension between privacy and the outside to balance the views for the residents. It is an effective way to control the intense daylight intake into the building while enjoying the rays of sunlight. In terms of cooling, the facade of building provide openings to let wind enter the semi-outdoor gardens and flow up through the courtyard providing passive cooling to both floors. The building also use photo-voltaic cells to harvest solar energy to be use in the house electricity. The facade and opening arrangement can be incorporated into the library in my project to filter out the direct sunlight that will shine through the working area.

Structure Precedent Study Party and Public Service Center of Yuanheguan Village / LUO studio Construction Firm:Hubei Yufeng Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. Construction Supervision:Shiyan Hongchao Construction Engineering Supervision Co., Ltd.

The project express a balance between concrete, masonry and timber structure in this building. The strategy they use is by using the existing concrete column at the ground floor and extended the structure vertically with prefabricated timber to reduce the load of the building. The result is a well balance structure of heavy and light qualities which is then use to put in programs such as private and communal space. Fig 31. Ground floor :masonry walls are use to control light and create space that is more private in the building (community meeting areas). Existing column (inner left) are supported with timber extension to bring its vertical structure back to life. Additional timber column (right), is use to created a grid/standardized the existing layout.

The transition from heavy to light responded quite well with my design intention and the relationship with the strokes of calligraphy.

The material also adapts to temperature change with helps the comfort zone while engaging the modality. The pale soft tone of the material does not disturb the eye which helps the user focuses on the reading and practicing. Further the material combined well with sunlight by combining the warm tone creating warmth which embraces the space. This applies for the workshop and library space in the project. Modality Study Kanji Characters After some stroke studies I began to start writing the first grade kanji letters get use to the brush pen. It is still a challenge to control the stroke even with the guide lines. I was not so sure about the line quality at first, but once I get use to the first few characters (1,2 and 3), the process became less tense and I quite enjoy the process. One of the benefits that I learn from writing the characters is to be able to learn the meaning of the words.

Luckily, I made the grid line in the paper, so It give me an opportunity to follow through the proportions and stroke order.

Week 8 Reflection

5.

1.

At this stage of refinement I have not find any new ideas to put into my buildings. However I have been thinking on creating the courtyard into the main space for people to interact with while doing calligraphy. On the other hand, I might take out some of the stairs to keep the building consistence and not over kill with vertical circulation spaces.

This week I began to transfer my sketched into Rhino to fit in with the accuracy and prepared foe 3d modeling. I also make some mock up spaces for the color schematic design. However I felt that it did not translate well compared to my sketch perspective from the interim. This may cause from the stiffness of the lines when it is generated in computer software.

6. 2.

This week I have been using the skill I already use in my previous work to produce the drawings. However, In my design thinking skills I was able to create lines that take inspiration from calligraphy stroke and use it in architectural elements such as the circulation and partitioning of the walls

After my plans are partially done and began to mass model it in 3d I felt it became more productive in terms off visualizing the space and fix things that is missing when drawing it in plan. After this part I could think in 3d when I design the spaces.

7. 3.

In week 8, I was a bit behind on looking at the precedents. This might be helpful to me while I am working on refining my ideas. In my searches I have only found the traditional engage space, but in this my design I want to reinterpret it instead of using it as just a gimmick.

This week I enjoy the process of writing some Kanji letters in my grid paper that I made. I began to use the strokes I learn to build a character and passively understand some meaning in both language (Kanji can both be understood in Chinese and Japanese.) Also It was fun translating my sketches in to drawings in Rhino and create the 3d space from them. However they are still areas that need to be solved and refine.

8. I need to improve on choosing the right precedents for me to refine my design. It can be overwhelming with images from the Internet that is not related to the objective that I want to find.

4. In the color exercise, I am stuck at choosing different tone of colors. Brown is a difficult color to deal with to create a dynamic atmosphere. So to counter that, I use green from the garden to create a sense of cooler tone to balance out the brown.

9. If I could redo this week, I would find more time to research on different types of sun shading and how to apply on working spaces. This will not affect my usual workflow, but I need to discipline myself not to get distracted by irrelevant beautiful images in the Internet that I want to use for my design

5. Apart from my enjoyment in producing these drawing I have been creating the space to flow and connect with the strokes of calligraphy. Also I am still having trouble implementing the modern engawa space in the courtyard.

Week 9 Interim 02 Reflection

5.

1.

Some key aspect to reconsider after the feedback is the position of the window of the individual classroom. My challenge for this project is to refine the facade to diffuse the direct sun light

This week was intense in terms of getting the 3 options done for the feedback in order to proceed forward for the interim. It was worth it to test out the three options before producing the images for the interim 02. Furthermore I was able to use the materials in the experiment in the interim.

6. This week I need to find a way to manage my files to make it more efficient when working in different drawings. Since there are a few tweaks in the drawings the interior scenes need to be refine and prepare for the final project.

2. My productivity this week is from doing the 3 options and use the materials and style to work on the presentation. This allows mw to have more time designing rather than on the graphical aspect of the plans and the long sections.

7. As a designer, I need to find the solution to the problem. In this project is the high angle sunlight from the north which is effects the comfort zone. This week shows that I need to find a solution and illustrate it clearly.

3. This week I find doing the collages the most fun to produce. Also creating the texture is also brings the drawings more dimension and breaks the clean ans crisp quality from the computer generated graphics. This can be applied to my final drawings which requires less time and I can focus more on the design refinement of the project.

8. My sense of proportion needs to be reconsidered in the rendering as well. I want to improve on my materials in V-ray because it will allows me to control the scale of the materials.

4.

9.

The challenges for this week is the refinement of the structures and setting the light to match the desired outcome. Also I need to refine some design spaces to keep the proportions in order in the future phase.

If I have a chance to revisit I would pay more attention to the timber structure and its joinery. The lack of structural information can misguide the space intention in my design which will not communicate well. For example, If I assigned my space to be made with timber early in the week, I would not need to do 3d model of the floor the day before the presentation. This will save me more time and will allow me to focus on refining the spaces.

5. I obtain some good insights from the precedents about timber structure and use them in my project, especially in the Yue Library (2019) that uses timber grid and use of multilevel to create level of spaces to experience in the building.

Light/ Shadow Areas Shops/ Exhibition/ Courtyard

Most of the light source will come from natural sunlight with the help of artificial light to highlight key aspects of the space. In the architecture shadows are use to identify space, which is lit by light to define specifics areas. As a designer it is crucial to efficiently use natural element to exist within the building. The spaces I use reconnects with nature by using light to guide them through the space. The challenge here is how to control light intake with details that response well with the spaces.

Light/ Shadow Areas

Practice rooms & light placements With a large amount of areas that is made out of timber most feature of the light needs to be carefully place to blend in with the timber frame. In terms of solar light gain, people have different preferences when they are occupying the space. For example one might preferred natural sun while some people would be more comfortable in complete shade. This issue creates a response in controlling the sunlight according to different preferences in the library.

Due to the high angle sunlight in summer, deep horizontal fins are use to create shading inside the space. My struggle in these sketches are the ways the figure out where to hide the light and how the floors are connected to external fins. I began to look into the past precedents to study the details of the timber joinery and how the beams extruded out to become the base for the horizontal fins. Also, in the next phase I was thinking of implementing adjustable louvers at the roof the control the pass

Facade Design Library/ Sunlight control

To understand the precedent I sketch the images to study how it was made and apply them in the to the buildings tectonics. By using a bundles timber columns, it leaves out spaces for additional joints to connect to the column. Moreover I use tapering element to the fins to make the fins less bulky to portray lightness into the building

Facade Design Light Fixtures

The architecture dealt mostly with timber structure where the intention is to expose the construction joinery. This allows the lighting to be more visible rather than hiding it. However my challenge is to is use lighting to blend in with the structure instead of making it fully visible. In my sketching I have studied how the lighting fixture are hide withing the framing. This conceal backdrop light creates an ambient atmosphere. I am getting an understanding of concealed lighting and need to concentrate of creating the detail for the next phase.

Week 10 Reflection

5.

1.

My struggle this week is to revisit the pass pages from the interim. The diagrams are based of sketches and I am still not sure how to develop a good composition to connect with my recent drawings. For example I struggle to resit the timeline to make the graphics more suitable for my modality.

I have some time to reflect and sketch more this week just to keep the sense of work flow going. Most the time spent is usually sketching for light fixture and update the journals and re assemble the notes from the feedback. Overall I improved in learing more about lighting position for its specific purposes.

6. 2.

When I get stuck in my design, I tend to sketch thing I find interesting and analyst them. It doesn’t have to relate to the modality but at least it keeps me busy and on the flow of working

In terms of design revisit I have not done much. However, I have been looking into lighting fixture on complex ceiling design to get a glimpse of how light bulbs are hidden and not interfere with the visual intent of the design. It takes the stress off the design process yet being productive at the same time.

7. My challenge will be incorporating ideas into clear drawings that communicates well with the audience. With such a detailed fixture. I am looking forward to see how I can manage to produce the drawings.

3. After the interim I want to take some time off the design productions and re-visit on the smaller details such as the lighting fixtures and ask myself how will I incorporate lighting to enhance the experience.

8. I want to explore more on using different back drop lighting on timber walls to see different effects. My objective id to create a diffuse glow light in areas for walking and harsh spotlight to emphasis the calligraphy exhibitions.

4. My way of design way of design is in a constant flow with a slow paced process, of discovering through sketching the precedents and apply it in my design. This week’s focus was not lighitng fixture so I am currently exploring ways to hide the light inside the timber structures.

9. I felt satisfied this week by taking a break and focus on sketching the small details. If I could redo week 11 I would focus more on the key moments of the store where I am not sure to use timber or fabric ceiling. I might do things differently such as doing Rhino sketches to get a sense of scale. Also if I have more experience the skills of rendering, I would be able to test out the lighting in render testing.

5. This weeks feed back from the guest tutors provide a good base on where the light should be place to getting a sense of warmth and diffuse light to soften the atmosphere. It was simple but a challenge to incorporate into my future drawings.

Week 11: Plan Re-visit

122

Studio 13: Embody

Section Revisit The suggestion to thicken the floor slabs with timber frames really brings the architectural tectonics to life and communicate more clear compared to the sections for the interim. It was satisfying to see the development as I kept pushing forward and doing these refinement. It will take sometime to complete it but I hope it will be worth it in terms of commutating clearly with the section.

Week 11: Oct/15/2021

Studio 13: Embody

Section B Doing the second section is more productive due to the direction I have made for the first section. The challenge here is adjusting the programs that was ignore during the inderim2. For example the space in the classrooms are more considered and the space was able to provide two floors for the individual classrooms per unit. This process creates a fresh view into working on the section

Studio 13: Embody

Lighting Fixture Sketches I will need to implement the graphic qualities into these details when my design is complete. This will create consistent visual in the drawings. At this moment I am not sure how to compose these drawing yet. I guess the way I would do it is to make the drawings link to the interior views and show them after the key moments.

Week 11 Reflection

5.

1.

The challenge I faced this week was probably finding a way to finish the plans as fast as possible so that I can focus on refining the programs. Since the ideas are not quite well figure out in the interim 02 , I need to catch up in this week to proceed for the finals.

My workflow for this week as quite loose which provide me more freedom the explore further in my design. I focus on refining my plans and sections modeling to set a foundation for further work in the future for the final design

6.

2.

Sometimes I get stuck in doing the plans so I change my perspective by doing the 3d modeling to get a more sense of 3d space so compare with my plans to visualize it in three dimensional. Refining the programs was a challenge this week to balance out the space.

This week was productive in terms of revisiting my section and add the structure to thicken the structure floors. I implement for timber qualities to bring more information into the architecture. I guess what makes it productive is that I still need to work more to bring out the concept alive my completing th e section.

7. As a designer I still feel I need to let go some of the small details. For example, the timber structure can be integrate, but in a scale of 1:100 for the presentation I do not need to focus on modeling it. However, I still find it quite hard to ignore some elements and model them in 3d anyways.

3. I enjoy adjusting and putting new programs into the building. Also giving the section more structural information really brings the architecture more life which is also exiting and something I am looking forward to complete. However the plans are quite tedious to draw due to various lightweight I have to manage.

8. This week I was expecting to get 80% of the plan done. However I still have time to refine and adjust more things before graphic production for the final presentation

4. This week I was stuck on managing the programs the of the plans. I have no problem with the section but the plans was quite a challenge to manage the lines and giving the program the most logical flow into the rooms. To fix this I just need to find spend more time preparing layer and commit to changes layers when I work on different elements in the plans.

9. I felt satisfied with the decision this week. If I could redo this week I would still focus on the interim comments before doing any further design refinement . The process can be tedious but I felt I need to complete it to create a solid foundation for other drawings . Plans and sections in this project is the most important part of the drawings. My challenge for this project would be the abstract part of each such as the modality transition and the surprise drawings that I don’t know to do yet.

5. Most of the refining are done after the comments after the interim, so most of the time I spend on re-tweaking some 3d modeling with takes a lot of time to produce. So I haven’t sped much time adding any new design into the architecture.

Revisit Stairs and Lighting pt.1 Amended from Feed back

In these sketch are notes that was taken from a discussion of changing the stair orientation. I was a bit unsure at first, but I was able to some clear height space to make the stairs to site at the same position, but with a different shape to “celebrate” the central courtyard. Also I have been thinking of how should I portray the timber frames into the section drawings. At this phase I have no definite idea yet what to do after the feedback.

Revisit Stairs and Lighting pt.2 Amended from Feed back

To break the typical stair layout from the interim 02, this week I changed the stairs to an L-shape to create a circulation that walk pases the courtyard to appreciate it as the users move up the space. Also I sketch out the layout of the timber frames and how light will install inside the structures. I did this last week, but I felt I need to revisit to make sure it is manageable in Rhino afterwards.

Adding Structure

Amended from Feed back I was able to add in the timber structure into the 3d models after some sketches. The things I found out is that my sketches tend to be more detailed. To refine this I simplify the section to where some parts I just filled in with black in order to take out some of the small pieces of the timber frames. Also I added insulation to enhance the thermal quality of the building.

Surprise Drawing

A Thank You Note In my last page I was planning to use my experience from my modality to thank you the instructors and a studio mates for their participation giving me useful feed back and use it to develop my design . I was not sure at first what to do until I decided to combined Chinese, English, Japanese Kanji, and Thai to creates the character Thank You as a demonstration of acknowledgment for the studio.

North East Facade Timber screens is use in north and east of the facade to control the light in the library and study area. The timber will warm the light and keep the area cool. As the facade transition to the east it gradually become s more solid where the programs become more private and required less light to create the atmosphere .

North East Facade

South East Facade Glass is use to create an opening for the public to view into the garden, and the exhibition area. Charred timber is use in area that doesn’t require much light . Grey brick is use on the lower floors to connect the visual language of the timber and also to control light in the exhibition space, which requires areas to create a spotlight effect onto the calligraphy shown during the journey.

Embodiment of Calligraphy The building contains spaces that allow full potential for calligraphers to experience and exchange their modality experience to those who are interested. From the exhibition to private classroom, people can experience the art of calligraphy through the space flowing along three floors and connect through each other by the courtyard. Light is controlled through architectural elements to create atmosphere that suits the function in the space.

Week 12+ Final Reflection

SWOT Vac.: Oct/31/2021

5.

1.

Adding more elements in the plan is a challenge in this phase. I want to add more details but I am not sure If I would make the plans more messy with unnecessary information. After some thought I filled the programs with different shades and hatches to identify the spaces. This creates a visual coherent of using black and well very well.

Week 12 is not so productive in term of design and production. I was focusing on refining the other section to prepare for the sectional drawings of the engawa. I was a bit concern If i could make it in time. However in the last remaining week I was able to manage the drawings with some revisits 2.

6.

As a designer when not doing productive work I always felt I would be behind schedule. So At least what I do is took a break and work on things that do not require a lot of design. So what I did is I modeled the parts that is already figured out and worried about the design later.

After adjusting the structures I realized that the clear height has change to be lower than expected. This is quite disappointing that I have to re-adjust the dimensions of the timber frames to make the space more clear. In the end I was able to readjust the structure to match the desired height.

3.

7.

The change of pace provides me sometime to just enjoy the 3d model making and see the initial section diagrams into a more complete space with timber frame similar to the long section I did for the previous week. However, the week before submission was focused on image production and page layouts

The way I work in week 12 is to aim for refine the areas from the feedback ans then design to make the architecture element alignment to the grid. After that I modeled more on the things that was left out such as partitioning on facade, roof rails and stair railings. In the final week, I focused on production and page layout, which makes me adjust some drawings to fit in the page.

4. My struggle this week is the decision where to model to provide enough information for the presentation. Also when doing the plans I get a bit confuse with the arrows and lines language in the stairs. It was quiet confusing because in the pass projects I did it another way, but his time I need to change according to the feedback to remain consistent. I end up redoing some parts of the plan several times

8. I have not improve anything much these week because I kept redoing the 3d model and plans when I felt the proportions of the floors feels off. At this moment it is an trail and error to test out while doing design at the same time. Also, I felt unsure how much more I need to draw the plan to make it match the detail resolution of 1:100 without making it too messy.

5.

9.

These 2 weeks was focused on modeling so most of the insight is the technical aspect and not so much on the design methodologies. However, I have develop some sense of proportion as I model the building and constantly adjusting to make it more visually balance. Production aside I learned a lot from this task.

Overall, If I could rework these weeks again I would be focused on planing my daily task and spend more time testing out the structure layout of the engawa space. I was a a bit rush in some areas and I have to comeback and fix some things which makes the process counterintuitive and unproductive overall. 152

Future Projects

What to Improve

Tools for the future

Some ideas that was not use in this studio is using colors. However, the studio narrows down for me to focus on lighting to create atmosphere. The reason is my modality is calligraphy which is practice with black in on white paper. This omits color. Furthermore I want to explore more materials in structure. I would like to use concrete and steel in future project to widen my structural knowledge.

I want to improve on creating a consistent graphic language into my project. Also I would like to spend some time to spell check my writings. The reason is most of the time spent is on design and production and sometimes texts are not fully considered as part of the project.

This project allows me to be more freely express through sketches and model making. Although I am not fond of model making, I do enjoy most of the time sketching and hand drawn to express my ideas. In term of digital tools I have been using the same methods in my past projects, but I felt I have improve in term of file management and modeling the right parts for the presentation. I think the most powerful tools for future project is the organic flow of overlaying sketches an refine through hand drawings until it is good enough to translate them into Rhino for accuracy and consistent.
