Forty years after his death, this documentary pays tribute to one of the major filmmakers of Italian cinema, an original work that continues to inspire today’s cinema. « PERSONA », THE FILM THAT SAVED INGMAR BERGMAN « Outside, there is the big world. Sometimes, our little world manages to reflect the big world, and it is then that we can understand the big world a little better.» The only director to have been awarded the Palme des Palmes at Cannes, Ingmar Bergman can be seen as the uncontested master of « cinéma d’auteur ». Quentin Tarantino, Woody Allen or Michael Haneke regard the director as the absolute film-maker, whose life and work have no equivalent. Ten years after his death, as we prepare to celebrate the centenary of his birth, this film recounts a single year in Bergman’s life. A pivotal year, a crazy year, in which he would die, and then be reborn thanks to his passion for cinema, and one film: Persona. ORSON WELLES Shadows & Light
A legendary figure, the living myth of the creative artist, Orson Welles was the man who reinvented the language of theatre and cinema at the age of 24. He was a man of a thousand faces, continually appearing in new forms, revealing endlessly unseen facets. He was a moralist, a humanist, a Don Juan, a glutton, an American and a homeless exile, an actor, a film-maker, a comedian, a poet, and an eternal child prodigy seeking to return to a state of grace. A child leading us into a maze of mirrors reflecting his talents, that he spins and twists as he pleases, never fully revealing what lies behind his imposing figure. This film is a journey into the heart of the man behind the legend. A film by Elisabeth Kapnist - Official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, Cannes Classics (2015)

INSIDE JOAN MIRÓ Thirty years after his death, Joan Miró has become an iconic figure in the art world. The more time passes, the more his work becomes universal, going beyond borders and genres. Thanks to the exceptional presence of Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson and administrator, as well as previously unseen archives and a privileged access to his work and his studio, we shall discover some of the painter’s less familiar facets: the private Miró, who could «by day be a treasure, and by night, a monster»; Miró the provocateur, as well as the Miró who was sensitive to the distress of his compatriots. We shall also evoke the pressures involved in handling such an immense painter’s heritage, a burden which falls on a single descendant, and the tragic fate of most of the members of his family. PAUL GAUGUIN
Paradise beyond the horizon The island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas is the final destination of the great traveller, Paul Gauguin. After Paris, Peru, Denmark, Brittany, Panama, Martinique and Tahiti, it was on this wild and remote island on the other side of the world that the painter set down his easel in 1901. What was he seeking on this Southern Pacific island? What constant but never truly satisfied desire drove him throughout his life to seek out a paradise that would always remain beyond the horizon? Paul Gauguin was one of the rare few who travelled so widely at the time, and one of very few painters to have fully integrated the different cultures he encountered into his work. One hundred years before everyone else, he elevated Maori culture and Marquesan traditions to the status of «Art Papou», and revealed much of its wealth in his work. KAREN BLIXEN
« The Blue House » located in Mexico City, is the home where Frida Kahlo was born (1907) and would die (1954). She is surrounded not only by painter Diego Rivera, but also by Leon Trotsky, André Breton, Sergei Eisenstein, Pablo Neruda, Waldo Frank, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Vassily Kandinsky, etc. As Mexico gears up to commemorate 200 years of national independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, our film recalls the great adventures of «The Blue House» : its parties, its manifestoes, its artists, its freewheeling love affairs, its betrayals... as well as its unlikely melding of art and revolution, of Surrealism and Mexico, of the Old and the New Worlds. An African night’s dream In her time a pioneer, Karen Blixen is today regarded as one of the 20th century’s great writers. Between her home country of Denmark, where she would also write, and Kenya, her adopted home for 17 years, she led an exceptional life. She would truly find herself in Africa, a continent she deeply loved, where she experienced great joy and great sorrow, and finally return to the point of departure, the family home, where she would ease her pain through writing. “No-one paid a higher price to become a writer than I“. It was in the northern light of her native Denmark that she wrote her best-known work Out Of Africa, which was made into a globally successful film in 1986 by Sidney Pollack, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. The director of this documentary, Elisabeth Kapnist, profiles the life of an extraordinary woman, an audacious adventurer, and a story-teller worthy of a modern-day Scheherazade. JRR TOLKIEN
JOSEPH KESSEL
Translated to over sixty languages, Tolkien’s books have deeply marked the imagination of millions of readers throughout the world. However, in a period of triumphant Hollywood blockbusters, part of the mystery may be fading away, something that is attached to a unique type of literary creativity. The film goes back to the origins of this tremendous creation and, at the same time, it is an opportunity to (re)discover the surprising personality of its author. Who was this quiet and scholarly man who taught languages and old English literature at Oxford? How was this gigantic project born? Going back and forth between ordinary reality and an immaterial and fabulously rich reality, the story offers to reveal the meaning of Tolkien’s life as a marvelous adventure of the mind.
Special correspondent, writer, resistant, Joseph Kessel has known both wealth and glory. At the age of 17 he dreamt of being an actor, but the suicide of his brother made him give up that dream. He doesn’t go on stage, but turns his life into a novel. With an innate sense of drama, the one they called “Jef” created his life as an adventure film, a life where fantasy and reality intermingled, a haunting waltz around characters that resembled him, like a film with himself as the hero. At the age of 60 he became the author of one of the greatest best-sellers of the 20th century, The Lion. Through all those years Kessel had worked, had fun and loved, in a whirlwind of wild passions. He did it all with panache, with no fear of death, and survived everything: war, drugs, alcohol… If many reporters have made him their reference, it is because Joseph Kessel is the bearer of universal values and a personal talent, making for great men and great stories. He could be a fictional movie hero. It is through films and other archives that we will tell the story of Kessel and browse his astonishing biography.

FRANÇOISE SAGAN The elegant art of living
The writer Françoise Sagan (1935-2004) had everything you could wish for: love, success, money, fame. At 19, she became a household name with her first book, Bonjour Tristesse. She never stopped writing and living with elegance, sincerity and above all a freedom that many reproached her for. Questioned jointly by her only son, Denis Westhoff, and the director, the woman that was Sagan is at the heart of this film. An intimate journey through the archives, leading us closer to the truth behind a myth. An intimate and analytical portrait of a modern icon. A story so excessive, impossible, and irreverent that it both seduces and infuriates us. A film by Marie Brunet-Debaines Producer: Camera lucida productions

MARTIN BUBER Itinerary of a humanist
After Freud and Einstein, Martin Buber (1878-1965) was one of the best-known Jews of the 20th century, an era he traversed as one of its principal actors and witnesses. The emergence of Zionism, Nazism and the creation of the state of Israel were all major concerns and subjects of profound and influential reflection. Concerning the Arab-Jews problem, he was the first to combat for a bi-national state and wrote extensively on the question of respect among Near East peoples, at the same time warning of the risks that were to be run if this were not the case. His thoughts on the issue are all the more forceful in contemporary times as, to a degree, they were premonitory and ground-breaking. 2015 was Buber’s year, not only for the 50th anniversary of his death, but also because we need him more than ever; his thoughts, and let us even say his message. It is time to explore the paths taken by Martin Buber and this film is a welcome opportunity to do so. A film by Pierre-Henry Salfati - Official selection at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival (2016)

SEIJI OZAWA
For some seven years, Seiji Ozawa has rarely appeared in public due to fragile health. He has, however, decided to honor certain engagements this year: at the International Music Academy which he has been organizing for several years now in Switzerland and at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Soloists from all over the world will gather together to experience the challenges of playing in string quartets. This is an opportunity for us to participate in the music for which he remains one of the greatest living conductors and to discover his life experiences and his relationship with music. It is a true gift that he has made the decision to hold two exceptional concerts where he will conduct the Academy students: a benevolent moment of extraordinary generosity. The living spirit of music At the age of 80, Seiji Ozawa is one of the last living legends of conducting. A pupil of Charles Munch and Herbert von Karajan, then Leonard Bernstein’s assistant, he directed the prestigious Boston Symphony Orchestra for thirty years. With his red Nikes and baseball hat, Seiji Ozawa doesn’t look like a traditional conductor. He comes from Asia and has retained a reserve and respect for the musicians he leads. Heavily involved in the 20th century repertoire and a much-loved teacher, Seiji Ozawa is universally admired and respected for his passion and commitment. Although forced by ill health to adhere to a strict routine in order to conserve his strength, he has agreed to conduct some concerts for his 80th birthday. CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI
THE BLUE DANUBE
On February 24, 1607, in the hall of mirrors of the palace of the Duke of Mantua, an art form which remains very much alive to this day was invented and which for some is considered to be the most complete form of art: the Opera. The craftsman of this innovation was the court composer, Claudio Monteverdi, whose “Orfeo” was the first masterpiece of its genre. Few are the players in history gone by whose lives have been as well documented as that of Monteverdi. What remains of him for us are papers, places and, above all, his music. In a continuous dialog between the music being played by musicians of today and the illustrated narrative of the composer’s life, the film retraces the journey of a man who redefined forever our representations of reality.
The Blue Danube is in itself the expression of the universe of the waltz. None other than The Blue Danube can embody the essence of the waltz so eloquently and precisely in form and spirit. But can this alone suffice to explain the worldwide success this waltz has met with? Indeed not: the waltz is also popular for a certain amount of historical, diplomatic and political reasons. The film will guide us through the origins of this musical piece, its history and how it was miraculously saved from disappearance and will show us how, very early on, the waltz became part of History and has remained there ever since. Finally, we will illustrate its ever-growing success with specialists and the greater public alike.

After six years of absence, Jamel Debbouze is returning to the stage. This will only be his 4th show in nearly 20 years and his 3 previous shows all made history. Much appreciated by his audience, Jamel wanted to build this show with them, to nourish his creative process. But after the terrorist attacks and in a divided political climate, what can we laugh at today? Can we touch on everything - and with whom? He shares with us his questions and his concerns. For months this hard worker juggles with tests before his audience, the organisation of the Jamel Comedy Club and the Marrakech Festival of Laughter. Jamel tells us about his life, his country, his encounters, and reveals all his complexity.
It’s in the town of Trappes that Jamel Debbouze, Nicolas Anelka and Omar Sy grew up. LIVE ART
THE GATES OF HELL BY AUGUSTE RODIN
What is a living sculpture? Can time be represented? What should be the lifespan of a work of art? Who can say do not touch the works? Can stealing an idea be justified? The LIVE ART documentary collection attempts to answer these questions by focusing on works referred to as “ephemeral”. These presentations and performances exist only for the duration of an exhibition then disappear, to be - perhaps - recreated in another location. From New York to Istanbul, from the São Paulo Biennial to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, this documentary series makes us question the place of art in our lives and the significance of the staging, the venue and the role of the visitor for an exhibition. This documentary aims to shed light, through the eyes of the talented animation director Augusto Zanovello (Audience award at the Festival International du Film d’Animation d’Annecy), on the creative process of one of the major artists from the history of art, Auguste Rodin. He will set out to meet with curators and historians in order to better understand the work of his mentor, and to establish a dialogue with his work. This challenge will be met by offering an original creation, a true artistic tribute in light of his know-how, techniques, and esthetic. 2008 MADOFF, THE FRAUD OF THE CENTURY 12th December 2008, in the very midst of the financial crisis, Bernard L. Madoff was arrested and handcuffed in front of the media. This former stockbroker was behind the largest financial fraud in US history. 65 billion US dollars! This lie lasted for over 20 years… during which Madoff lived lavishly with his victims’ money. How did this former lifeguard who had become a rich businessman by age 50 managed to convince so many institutions and wealthy individuals to entrust their money to him? Directed by Mélanie Dalsace
1990, NAYIRAH’S TESTIMONY AND THE FIRST GULF WAR
On the 14th October 1990, before a US Congress commission, a 15 year old adolescent girl, Nayirah al-Sabah, gives a chilling testimony of the atrocities committed in a Kuwait hospital by Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi troops. Televisions around the world broadcast the speech, provoking a wave of indignation within public opinion, both American and international. On the 17th January 1991, international forces, under pressure from the Bush Sr. administration, launch the operation Desert Storm. For this war was finally declared on the base of a lie, entirely invented by communication agencies, financed by the US government and Kuwait. Directed by Bénédicte Delfaut
2013, THE LANCE ARMSTRONG SYSTEM
It’s the 17th January 2013 and in a cleverly orchestrated cathodic ceremony, the seven times winner of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong confesses to the queen of the talk-show, Oprah Winfrey, that he has been doped, using EPO, growth hormone and blood transfusions. For more than a decade Lance Armstrong has denied and refuted, called the others liars and cheats. So how did this American “hero” - stricken by cancer at the age of 25, returned to the height of competition through unfailing courage – build the greatest lie in the history of cycling, without anyone being able to stop him sooner? Directed by Eve Minault
1972, THE WATERGATE SCANDAL
This is the greatest American lie of the twentieth century. Richard Nixon spared no effort to ensure his re-election on the 7th November: spying on his opponents from the Democratic party, wiretapping, stealing documents, using slush funds. A team of 50 people were recruited from within the White House to bring down the opposite camp and rig the election. Presidential lies, misuse of the government structure… The truth slowly came to light, right up to his resignation in August 1974. The most famous scandal involving corruption at the highest level of the leading world power, the lie that forced an American president to resign. Directed by Bénédicte Delfaut

2002, IRAQ & WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION
September 12th, 2002, George W. Bush assured the United Nations Security Council that Iraq was in possession of “weapons of mass destruction” and posed a threat to the United States, particularly through its links with Al Qaeda. “We have a first-hand description” of these installations of death, explained Colin Powell, the Secretary of State at the UN. However, it was all untrue. A fabrication thought up by a nobody and taken up by the American government who used this as the principal reason for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. A misleading propaganda with a major geopolitical setback. Directed by Setti Dali
1985, THE RAINBOW WARRIOR March 1985, the Rainbow Warrior, the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, was docked in Auckland, New Zealand. On 10th July 1985, a dozen DGSE (French Directorate General of External Security) agents were stationed in New Zealand to launch an operation to sink the Rainbow Warrior at all costs. There was a huge scandal, “an act of state-backed terrorism, an act of war”, declared the New Zealand minister, Geoffrey Palmer. Mitterrand, who had known about the operation from the very beginning, attempted to defuse the crisis. An extensive and pernicious campaign kicked off. A film by Mélanie Dalsace
1915, THE SINKING OF THE LUSITANIA On May 7th 1915, the British trans-Atlantic liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine. 1944, D-DAY, OPERATION FORTITUDE
6th June 1944. The beaches of Normandy are the scene of the most spectacular military operation of all time: the Normandy Landings, a key moment that will alter the course of the Second World War. They owe their success, though, to a gigantic lie: a phantom army, armed with inflatable tanks and wooden rifles; but also to a whole network of double agents, most of them entirely fictitious. And leading this campaign of disinformation - the most sophisticated ever dreamt up – is one man: Winston Churchill. A film by Sonia Gonzalez

SLAVERY ROUTES This is the story of a world whose territories and own frontiers were built by the slave trade. A world where violence, subjugation and profit imposed their routes. The history of slavery did not begin in the cotton fields. It is a much older tragedy, that has been going on since the dawn of humanity. From the Vth century on, and for over 1,200 years, Africa was the epicenter of a gigantic traffic of human beings traversing the entire globe. Nubian, Fulani, Mandinka, Songhai, Susu, Akan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kongo, Yao, Somali… Over 20 million Africans were deported, sold and enslaved. This criminal system thrived, laying the foundations of empires around the world. Its scale was such that for a long time, it has been impossible to relate it comprehensively. And yet, it raises a fundamental question: how did Africa end up at the heart of the slavery routes? LIST OF EPISODES

PARIS 1900, THE CITY OF LIGHT In 1900, the eyes of the whole world were on Paris. Joy and optimism were at a peak in the elegant City of Light. The Exposition Universelle, which opened in April 1900, was an enormous celebration of French success. It welcomed 51 million visitors, half of whom were foreigners. Significant investments had been made to ensure that the Exposition would be a truly extraordinary event. Two splendid exhibition halls, the Petit and Grand Palais, were built for the occasion, along with three railroad stations: Gare d’Orsay, Gare de Lyon, and Gare des Invalides. Paris became a showcase city, displaying the latest technical and scientific inventions, and also boasting avant-garde art galleries, lively cabarets, the ultimate in high fashion, and the Parisiennes. The myth of “La Belle Epoque” reigned supreme.

WORLD WAR II
THE HEAVY WATER WAR In 1939 the scientific world is buzzing. Research on the atom is advancing fast and everyone wants to be the first to succeed in uranium fission. Governments closely follow these advances, while international tensions are rising. The race for the atomic bomb is launched. Unlimited funds are injected into scientific research: Hitler attracts the best physicists by giving them financial and human resources hitherto unknown and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is established in France. But to control nuclear fission, the French and the Germans alike absolutely need heavy water. This rare resource is produced in a single factory in Vemork, a small Norwegian town, which then becomes a major strategic issue. From 1939 to 1944, the Allies lead several secret operations to recover the stocks of heavy water, and to prevent Hitler getting his hands on them. This documentary, constructed as a true historical thriller, returns for the first time to this little known, but nevertheless crucial episode from the Second World War. BOMBING WAR
From Guernica to Hiroshima The film takes us around the entire world, as no region was spared: the free countries, such as those occupied by Axis forces, as well as Italy, Germany and Japan. Seen from the skies, the war is revealed in a new light. It began in 1937 when Guernica and the Chinese cities of Chongqing and Shanghai were devastated by bombs and ended in August 1945 when the Americans dropped the first atomic on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is not a tale of invasion and great battles, but an account of a clearly-defined programme of destruction, an incendiary science that was continually re-invented and perfected through the global conflict. It is this little-known war that we shall recount. The story of an insane race for power and destruction, which drained the wealth of nations, mobilized the most brilliant scientific minds, and left a world in ruins. In this new form of warfare, the first victims were civilians. The world that emerged from WWII would be changed for ever. A film by Emmanuel Blanchard & Fabrice Salinié

WOMEN OF THE THIRD REICH German women have long been perceived as passive witnesses to the crimes of the Nazi regime. Yet the ideologists of the Third Reich used these women as an essential part of their system. More than 13 million women were cardholding members of the NSDAP, the Nazi party. Reproductive mothers with families, they then contributed to the German war machine, working in factories or volunteering as guards in the death camps. This documentary will shatter the conventional image of these women. Loyal, indoctrinated, ambitious and fanatic, they were an integral part of the regime. Through a historical and psychological investigation, we will attempt a better understanding of their radicalisation and fanatic drift, by unveiling a largely unknown dimension of the Nazi system. MAGDA GOEBBELS
The first lady of the third Reich In Adolf Hitler’s bunker in Berlin, bombarded day and night by the Russian army, an elegant woman of around 40 poisons her 6 children before committing suicide. Her name was Magda Goebbels, and she was the wife of the notorious and sinister propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, and the Third Reich’s true First Lady. From this inaugural scene, this documentary, in the form of a psychological thriller, attempts to understand how Magdalena Friedlander became Magda Goebbels. A woman who bore the name of the Jewish step-father who raised her. A woman who married a wealthy automobile magnate with libertarian ideas, before divorcing him, and becoming an emancipated young woman at the height of fashion. For Magda Goebbels is as much a product of history - that of Nazism - as of her own tortured psyche.

WORLD WAR II
39-45: THE CHILDREN’S WAR The Children’s War intends to explore the history of a unique generation, children aged 10 in 1940, who grew up in exceptional times. Caught between Collaboration and Resistance, wartime childhood experiences and stories have for a long time been hushed up. Far from being spared by the brutal conflict, they were thrown into the chaos of dark and sinister times. For 4 years, this age group became the epicentre of national upheaval. Placed at the heart of Maréchal Pétain’s ‘regeneration’ project, put to work out of necessity, exposed to hunger, death and deportation, and widely condemned by a fragile and incompetent judicial system, war children were both the instruments and scapegoats of a totalitarian regime. 1944, OPERATION FORTITUDE
Documentary series: ‘History’s greatest lies’ 6th June 1944.

NUREMBERG, THE NAZIS FACING THEIR CRIMES It was one of the biggest trials of the 20th century. The one that opened the way for the creation of an international justice system. It was the first trial to be filmed, and yet very few people have ever seen the nearly 25 hours of original footage. For the very 1st time, a film takes viewers inside the courtroom, via the original trial footage filmed by John Ford’s crew. Most of it has never before been broadcast; all of it has been fully restored. This gripping faceoff with Nazi war criminals lets viewers discover the most powerful moments in this historic trial. WWII ALLIED BOMBING IN FRANCE Between 1940 and 1945, allied bombings over France caused the death of 75,000 civilians, injured tens of thousands of inhabitants traumatizing part of the population and destroying part of the nation’s historical heritage. Envenomed by the Vichy regime propaganda, this tragic chapter of WWII has been deprived of history. Inflicted by the “good side”, these dramatic events have been brushed aside as part of inevitable collateral damage. But did such a purportedly legitimate purpose require so much sacrifice? Allied bombings are the last remaining gray areas in the history of WWII and now attract the interest of historians. Beyond the emotional aspect, we will delve into the reasons, purpose and efficiency of allied bombings and how they have been exploited. The film explores the strategic issues the political and ideological dimensions of these bombings. A film by Emmanuel Blanchard & Fabrice Salinié

THE JEWS OF THE FORBIDDEN ZONE
1939/1940: THE WAR THROUGH A LENS
In July 1940, the German authorities annexed an area of France which extended from the Somme to the Swiss frontier in order to create “restricted zones” to serve the Nazis. Hundreds of foreign Jews were sent from the Paris region into the Ardennes to work there as farm laborers. Lured by the promise of a better life, these men and women discovered a pitiless world: the groups of foreign workers, so called GTE. Subjugated and oppressed, entire families were worked to exhaustion, laboring in the fields over a number of years, before eventually being deported. Even today, the story of the Jews of the Ardennes remains largely unknown.

It took Hitler less than ten months to conquer Europe. The film gives a monthly record, from September 1939 to June 1940, of the inexorable plunge Europe took into chaos. The story is principally inspired by French, English and German newsreels. The story is told from these three nations’ point of view, based on the information they gave their nations at the time. An original choice, a most fascinating one, that gives us the opportunity to relive this era on a human scale, and watch whilst History unravels. A film by Jean-Christophe Rosé

WORLD WAR I
WORLD WAR I: WE WON’T GO! This film addresses the Great War through the words and acts of those who refused it, whether soldiers on the front lines or conscientious objectors, pacifists or revolutionaries. In the historiography of the Great War, military disobedience, mutiny and engaged pacifism have become a silent myth. For a long time, these acts of refusal were taboo and largely unknown and they carry a strong symbolic weight. They are the first manifestations of what will later become conscientious objection and that will spread during the following wars, in particular during the Vietnam and Algerian wars. From the truce of Christmas 1914 up to the mutiny of Kiel in October of 1918, men have rebelled against the war. A hundred years later in Verdun, the ground still bears traces of the war. Out of this symbolic and forever marked soil, rise the voices of those who have refused. A film by Georgette Cuvelier

POLITICAL LEADERS
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
SHIMON PERES
Between 1932 and 1945, Eleanor Roosevelt invested the function of First Lady with an unprecedented political dimension. She would become the inspiration and gurehead for a new generation of women determined to carve out a place in a political world reserved exclusively for men. 50 years after her death, the testimony of those who knew her best enables us to gain a clearer understanding of her exceptional life: that of a woman in love, at the head of the world’s greatest country. For behind her extraordinary public life, she concealed a personal secret: her passionate relationship with the nation’s best-known female reporter, Lorena Hickok.
For the departure of Shimon Peres from his position as President of Israel, an intimate face-to-face with an icon of that era. Shimon Peres was one of the last great actors on the international political stage. He was also an amazing storyteller who knows how to captivate his audience with his words. We have spent two weeks with Peres in Tel Aviv, where he told them his life story. The story of the little Jewish boy who emigrated to Palestine in 1934 is a magnificent tale in and of itself. But then came his meetings with Ben Gurion, Sadat, Kennedy, Bill Clinton... In this intimate face-toface talk, Shimon Peres tells his story.

MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK
THE LAST DICTATORSHIPS IN EUROPE
Fractured by the renewal of the Kurd conflict and the ongoing threat of Jihadists from Syria, Turkey is undergoing a period of uncertainty and intense political and social tension. The failed coup d’etat of the night of July 16th 2016 by a part of the army, intended to «restore freedom and democracy» is highly illustrative of the divisions within Turkish society, increasingly subjected to the growing authority of President Erdogan and his Islamo-conservative party, the AKP. So what remains today of the heritage of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish republic, and a fervent advocate of a secular state and social progress? Put together chronologically, the film alternates between archive footage and interviews with both French and Turkish historians. Asked to consider the significance of the Atatürk myth, the historians analyze key points in his life, the foundations of his character, the role he played both in Turkish public opinion and within the political parties that still lay claim to him today.
The last three decades in our “iron” 20th century brought unexpected but gratifying advances in democracy all around the globe. Several dictatorships fell or were wiped out. In the 1970s, outdated regimes that were still oppressing people in southern Europe. Our film will take a look at this struggle by comparing and contrasting the case of three countries: Spain, Greece and Portugal. While all three are quite close in terms of their geography, history and culture, and all three joined the European Community after building democratic nations, each of these countries has trod its own unique path.

JEWS AND MUSLIMS Intimate strangers
In people’s minds, Jews and Muslims have become the archetype of sworn enemies, of polarized identities leading to an endless conflict. If you take a close look at history, you will find that the tension is quite recent, starting merely 150 years ago. By going back to the mythical times of Abraham, we will see how Jews and Muslims see themselves as linked from the origin. Then we will question how their relations have evolved throughout the centuries. This profoundly human story will be recounted using graphic animation, archival footage and accounts from international specialists. LIST OF EPISODES

ADVENTURE IN INDOCHINA 1946-1954
BLACK HEART, WHITE MEN
Opium dens, «con gai», the abandoned wives of the «Petits blancs» (Little Whites), the major expatriate families, Piastre trafficking: from 1930 to 1952, the film traces the history of a French presence in the Far East. The story of the Petits blancs (fictional characters) who set off for adventure and their experiences with the bank, the plantations, the government... gradually paints a depiction, throughout the film, of European expat society. Through these intertwining lives, we pass through an era and through a part of the South-East Asian Continent.
This documentary series relieves the story of the colonization of Central Africa from 1480 to the present day, outlining the ties that continue to link the region to the West by exploring key historical stages: the arrival of the first Europeans in Africa and the establishment of trade; the religious conquest; the abuses of slavery; the dividing up of Africa between imperial powers; economic excesses; the controlling of local elites; failed independence movements, predatory dictatorships etc…It is comprised solely of archival footage, iconographic documents, and animated sequences.

CURRENT AFFAIRS ENCOUNTER WITH O.
SYRIA: CHILDREN AT WAR
Maïana is 42 years old. On December 2, 2017, 33 years after she was assaulted, she conversed with the man who raped her. The meeting was the result of months of preparation. Contrary to widespread belief, this confrontation is not the end of the struggle, but for Maïana, it was only the beginning. A long effort ensued, guided by the hope that it would reduce the probability that the man who assaulted her, already a repeat offender, would go on to harm other women. 59%: This is the average rate of repeat offense for rape in France. The figure has been increasing constantly since the late 90s, despite efforts by successive governments to toughen legislation. In August 2014, the “Taubira Law” enshrined a new resource, to be applied in addition to traditional punitive justice: restorative justice.
For more than three years now, the civil war that opposes the rebels of the syrian army to the armed forces of president Assad has made over 200 000 victims. The first victims of this guerilla are civilians, including children. Through this documentary, we have followed a family in Aleppo who lives in a rebel quarter to film the daily routine of a young boy who lives with his brothers and parents who decided to stay and fight against Bachar El-Assad regular Army. Has this generation of 13 to 16 year-old boys lost their childhood forever ? How do they adapt to a civil war? What values did they decide to defend staying in besieged Aleppo? REFUGEES, A MARKET UNDER INFLUENCE
SANTA MUERTE
For the vast majority of us, refugee camps respond to the needs of an emergency situation. And yet the reality of such camps is very different. Their multiplication around the world is a clear demonstration that a situation regarded as ‘exceptional’ is, in fact, a system that is durable, lucrative and long-term. It is a veritable market, in which state nations, international organisations and investors all stand to gain. Around the world, 12 million people live in refugee camps. More than 60 million pass through one camp or another. In various forms, camps are now commonplace pretty much everywhere. Who sets them up? With what legitimacy? Who do they benefit? Why are camps proliferating and why do they endure? Do they provide the only solution for a migratory policy that seems so hard to define? Through a close-up investigation of this invisible world, this documentary film takes a new look at contemporary migration. It describes and reveals the mechanisms behind a major phenomenon: the «encampment of the world».
The protective saint of drug traffickers, petty thieves, street vendors and prisoners, the guardian angel of taxi-drivers and mothers, Santa Muerte (Holy Death) is the central folk saint in a cult that has become increasingly important within Mexican society and among Hispanic immigrants to the USA. Having undergone a spectacular rise in popularity over the past 20 years, she now has over 2 million devotees, including 1 million in the Mexican capital alone. Represented by a skeleton, often life-size, dressed in a long satin tunic and with a golden crown, she is regarded by many as a protective saint, the final refuge to escape an extremely harsh and violent day-to-day reality. This documentary seeks to understand the orgins of this national cult in a country as paradoxical as Mexico, where the influence of drug-trafficking is phenomenal.

SOCIETY & HUMAN INTEREST
STRAIGHTENING
A FOSTER CHILD’S STORY
At the age of 33, Gaëlle has decided to undergo surgery to rid herself of a scoliosis that has deformed her back and her life for over 20 years. “Straightening” tells of a young woman’s physical and psychological metamorphosis, as she strives for the body she wished she had naturally: less painful, straighter, perhaps even beautiful; a body that allows her to imagine herself as a strong, straight woman, a mother. Despite the ordeal she imposes on herself, there is no certainty that Gaëlle will succeed in becoming her imaginary ideal. Her quest for this self depends on surgery, the outcome of which is unpredictable.
At the time of entering adolescence, Yanie is faced with an uprooting. His foster parents, who have cared for him since he was two, are retiring. The Social Services believe that his mother, Virginie, in rehabilitation after a prison sentence, can’t get him back yet. His father is serving a 3 year prison sentence for violence. So Yanie will enter into a new family, begin a new life with strangers. At the age of 14 he has to start from scratch, with the risk of ending up in a children’s home, if things don’t work out. It’s another test, added to all the others, perhaps also a chance to break with the old models cluttering up his life. The film attempts to capture that moment called resilience, when an adolescent chooses - or not - to construct himself against all the odds of his life story.

PAUL DUAN
CASA 93
Barely 23 years old, Paul Duan, French and the son of Chinese immigrants, had a future all mapped out and a very comfortable salary, as a data analyst in Silicon Valley. But this genius of algorithms and idealist of the big data decides to abandon it all, returning to France to found a NGO, in order to promote a citizen use of new technologies. His first challenge is tremendous: to bring down the unemployment curve by 10%. A much commented announcement, doubtless too ambitious, but Paul has understood how to interest the decision-makers and raise funds. With a small team, driven by the same sense of the common good, Paul Duan develops his “2.0 Philanthropy”, where everyone can have access to information for decision making. The film tells the background of this exhilarating human adventure, which aims to redefine citizenship and make new technologies into a tool for democratisation
Missbah, Miguel, Sandy, Mohamed and Lina are five young people who have a dream of working in fashion. Thanks to Nadine Gonzalez and her free school, Casa 93, this dream is about to become true. Trained by big fashion names, such as Jérôme Dreyfuss, Jean-Paul Gaultier or Andrea Crews, and having access behind the scenes of the most prestigious couture houses such as Chanel, for six months the five young people will learn the basics of model making, marketing, design and sewing. The young students of this school are ready to make many sacrifices to get the chance of a place in fashion, usually reserved for the elite. All have their share of problems and difficulties, but their creativity and motivation are exceptional. Such a challenge, bringing the suburbs on to the podiums of Fashion Week, Nadine has already overcome in Brazil, where she created her first fashion school in a favela, from which have come several major Brazilian designers much in vogue today.

SUPER MOM
LIVES AT THE BORDER
Every year, young mothers from all over America leave their children behind and set out to the heartland of the United States to compete for the title of Mother of the Year. One of these hopeful candidates will go on to impress the judges and become the reigning national representative of mothers all over the country. This documentary film follows three women as they leave their crucial roles at home and go on the journey of a lifetime. From a tough Midwestern farmer’s wife with five kids to a wealthy East Coast mother of two to a working mother in Iowa, we explore these women’s different worlds attempting to understand their hopes and dreams, pressures and fears.
This film is the portrait of Vuthy, a young Cambodian who has decided to dedicate himself to improving the lives of others. He has been working with NGO Friends-International for fifteen years, managing of a small team at the border between Thaïland and Cambodia. This is a very sensitive area as many Cambodians go and take their chances in Thaïland, hoping to make a living for their family. Often outlawed, they unfortunately face human trafficking networks and corruption. Many of them will get caught in a downward spiral of gambling, drug abuse, begging or prostitution… We have followed Vuthy at work with street children and clandestine migrants for over four years, at the border of two realms, at the line between legality and clandestinity, between childhood and vagrancy, innocence and violence… Various encounters will lead us into this world which Vuthy is surrounded by on a daily basis. We will share his doubts and solitary moments but also good times with his family and friends. Lives at the border allows to see different destinies and to witness a handful of men and women fighting for the future of hundreds of children and families.

SACRED PATHS A unique experience of the SACRED, following in the paths of those who still live it today. «The sacred, whatever the name or the form we give it, transforms those who experience it, and overwhelms their whole being» Frédéric Lenoir tells us about five different ways to live the sacred, in their current and historical, spiritual and cultural dimensions. Five unique paths for those who have chosen to experience it daily. « Sacred Paths » is filming the intimacy of men and women who have chosen to live differently, to privilege being over having, to preserve certain lifestyles respecting nature, to engage in a quest for the absolute, which polarises their existence and gives it meaning. Who are they? They are the heirs to the most ancient and universal wisdoms and spiritual practices, which we will rediscover through their testimony, and thanks to the approach of their daily experience of the sacred. SPORT SARAH THE FIGHTER
THE TOUR: THE LEGEND OF THE RACE
265 matches, 10 titles as French champion, world champion in 2008. For ten years Cédric Balaguier’s Camera has followed Sarah Ourahmoune’s extraordinary journey, until her consecration at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016, when the 35 year old boxer became Olympic Vice-Champion in the flyweight category. The young woman, born in Sèvres in 1982, had her first pugilistic emotions in 1999, becoming French champion at 17, barely a year after having started boxing. But this mother has also illustrated a book, and got a Master in Communication from Sciences-Po in Paris. Today she’s a member of the National Council of Cities and appointed Government Delegate in SeineSaint-Denis. A fighter model, in the ring and outside.
“The Tour - The Legend of the Race” sheds a new light on the last 100 years of the Tour de France, now considered one of the world’s most popular sporting events. The Tour has lived through a century of rich history, with ups and downs, triumphs and scandals, continually evolving with the times. Throughout it all one key characteristic has remained the incredible power of identification the public has with the Tour cyclists, mythical figures that seem accessible and inaccessible at the same time. In order to reflect this human dimension of the Tour, the film tells the story through a selection of its emblematic heroes. Emblematic of the Tour, but also emblematic of an era, embodying in the film their generation: Coppi, Bobet, Anquetil, Poulidor, Merckx, Hinault, Indurain, Armstrong...Fully archive-based and colourised, The Tour cleverly weaves together all these individual stories with the story of the Tour de France itself, with the goal of creating a timeless and epic sports saga.

THE DEEPEST MAN ON EARTH The Austrian freediver, Herbert Nitsch, defies the depths of the ocean and goes from one amazing feat to another. He has held the world record for freediving since 2007: - 214 meters! The British director Alexander Abela, who is also a freediver, shadowed him for many months while he trained, and also during international competitions in Greece and the Bahamas. In order to reach these extreme depths, Herbert draws on the breathing techniques of marine mammals and forces himself to do hours of training every day. At one with the sub-aquatic world, he is looking to go beyond Man’s limits rather than just break records. His dream is to go deeper than 300 meters! RAYMOND POULIDOR The eternal second
For a whole generation of French people, Raymond Poulidor has been and remains a myth. “Poupou”, as he was commonly referred to, always placed but his name never made it on the list of winners, in spite of climbing eight podiums in fourteen competitions. Outclassed by the two super champions Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx, both quintuple victors of the Tour de France, Raymond Poulidor will at least find a little consolation in the fact that these setbacks only served to strengthen his aura. How and why did this cyclist represent – for most of the French public – so much hope? This question will serve as the film’s guideline. A film by Patrick Jeudy

SCIENCE/ENVIRONMENT
COSMIC FLOWS
VENICE
Since the beginning of time, Man has been constantly pushing the boundaries of his world. Following in the footsteps of 16th-century explorers, astronomers of the 20th-century have sailed across “celestial waters”, taking their dizzying chart-making skills to new heights in the course of their missions. At the forefront of technology, these unusual travelers have used increasingly powerful and spectacular terrestrial or space telescopes as their vessels to push our knowledge ever further and to give substance to our unending dream. From Hawaii to Australia via South Africa and China, we invite you to embark on an incredible human and scientific adventure which will take you to the greatest exploration sites on the planet and in the Cosmos and to discover new challenges in our perception of the universe. A breathtaking journey on Earth and into space!
The sea level in Venice has increased drastically in the last century or so, threatening the very existence of the city. Global warming and the harmful effects of tourism have amplified the phenomenon of acqua alta (sudden rise in sea level), rendering the traditional responses of inhabitants obsolete. It is urgent to act today. Projects conceived in laboratories across the globe are joining forces to save the city. These include Ramses, a 3D modelization of the lagoon produced using lasers, which analyzes rises in water level; and MOSE, a series of movable dams costing over 4 billion euros, intended to block the sea in case of acqua alta. The film will take us on this extraordinary journey, the technological and scientific struggle for the survival of Venice, a survival that has been in doubt from its very construction.

NIYRAGONGO
DALLOL VOLCANO
Located in Democratic Republic of Congo, the volcano Nyiragongo is considered to be the most active in Africa. Its permanent lake of lava is the biggest of the planet and its devastating eruptions threaten the 1 million inhabitants of the city of Goma. To anticipate the future eruptions and avoid catastrophes like the violent one in 2002, a team of specialists go the closest to the boiling lake of lava in order to make samples and install measuring tools. A very complex objective in a very instable region, geologically but also politically. This film tells the adventure of this exceptional collaboration between passionate volunteers and scientists in a place as dangerous as mythical.
What do we really know about the origins of life? Scientists are always in search of new elements of information. In Ethiopia, a unique volcanic site, where numerous hydrothermal events take place, features the most extreme conditions, similar to those surrounding the emergence of life on earth. For the very first time, a French and Spanish research team have decided to visit the location, in the hope of discovering new microbial lineage that could explain the origin of life. With its incredible array of colours, Dallol is a vast mound that looms up out of the Danakil Depression known for its extreme salinity levels. For some scientists, it is a dream come true, affording the perspective of perhaps providing answers to the fundamental question of how life was formed on earth. And, therefore, could it exist on other planets? Filmmaker and photographer Olivier Grunewald, who is familiar with the site and with active volcanic zones, recounts the expedition and the scientific questioning.

REMARKABLE POLLARDS The tree with a thousand uses
Having populated our landscape for thousands of years, pollards are living witnesses to a long history between mankind and plant. Throughout Europe, from ancient times until the 1950s, pollards have played an essential role in the rural economy. Dethroned by the Industrial Revolution, they are today a biological and cultural heritage of inestimable value and yet remain little known. The way pollards are regarded is now beginning to change. There is now a much greater awareness and the pollard is becoming one of the emblematic symbols of the return to the land movement and the conservation of the ecosystem. The documentary Remarkable Pollards invites you to get to know these trees, their multiple uses and multiple faces. This is one way to pay them tribute, to discover their extraordinary qualities and their ecological value for today and the future.
A TREE FOR A DAY Filmmaker Pierre Patrolin spent nearly one year crisscrossing France with his camera and crew searching out trees: remarkable or unknown; short or tall; tucked deep in the countryside or standing in the heart of a city. He draws a portrait of each of these different trees in images and stories. A remarkable tree raising up from the roof of a pigeon coop, or the simplicity of an old oak in the bend of a road. A majestic cedar or a maritime pine bent over by the wind. An elm, a linden, a willow. In the rain, the snow or the frost, or spared by a fire. An olive tree in Roqueburne, or a pear tree at Versailles. A beech in Ponthus, or an anonymous oak. From northern France to Corsica, from season to season, from legend to tradition: 130 one-minute portraits that introduce viewers to unique or moving trees.about. THE SURPRISING WORLD OF RABBITS From natural-born prey to public enemy number 1
Is there a more inoffensive creature than the rabbit? At first sight, anyway...And yet this herbivorous animal, an easy prey for all manner of predators, has developed a range of astonishing faculties to survive. Sight, hearing, speed, language, reproduction, cooperation... abilities honed and perfected over the centuries in order to adapt to the environment, and which are often more than surprising. This film explores the rabbit’s super powers, seen in a variety of unusual situations in a range of countries around the world. We shall see how the fluffy, cuddly bunny - often with a rather random life expectancy - can prove to be highy resourceful and even indomitable, if they get the opportunity... Prey or pest, weak or strong, cute or dangerous... the rabbit is all of these, and much, much more. A film by Hervé Glabeck & Aurélie Saillard

THREAT & SURVIVAL
After evoking endangered species in the Alps and off the French coasts, Emma Baus continues her exploration of the man-animal conflict…in the forest. From Rambouillet to Lorraine, via the vast wooded expanses of the South-West and the North, we accompany a number of emblematic species over several seasons: a squirrel, wild boar, a deer, a tit, and a couple of foxes.
For city dwellers drowned in asphalt, the beach is an ultimate horizon. But it is also a meeting place for open sea species. If it is a place of wonder for Man, it is also the scene of conflicts with the animal realm. The intensification of tourism, intensive fishing and even the development of agrofuel has an impact on marine animals. For the second opus in the series, the director pursues her investigation of the conflict between man and animal; this time by exploring emblematic or unknown species of the French littoral (seals, puffins, Mediterranean dolphins, pink flamingos).
Far from the hectic pace of human activities, mountains are an ultimate haven for ibex, black grouse, groundhogs or wolves. But nowadays, humans are progressively leaving their mark through winter sports or global warming. Shot in France, Italy and Switzerland, our movie is the story of a life of adapting to the natural environment, but also to a new predator, Man, for these four emblematic wildlife species in the European Alps. Because you don’t need a rifle to harm mountain wildlife....

THE UNDERWORLD & THE FRENCH REPUBLIC
How did French gangsters become the kings of trafficking? How did they build a worldwide trafficking empire?
For the first time, The Underworld and the French Republic gives criminal leaders a platform, enabling them to evoke the dangerous liaisons that the underworld has constantly maintained with political leaders from 1945 until today. From the French Gestapo (la Carlingue) and the lawless influences that haunt the Republic today, via the Gaullist militia (the SAC) and Parisian gambling circles, this mini-series presents an insightful analysis of how the lawful State administration works hand in-glove with those who flaunt and abuse its own laws.
Following the trafficking roads Heroin, cannabis, slot machines, cocaine, money laundering… traveling the most heavily trafficked routes - from Indochina to West Africa or to South America, passing through Spain or the Maghreb - we shall tell the story of these traffickers who have traveled the world in search of Eldorado and who, over 50 years, have developed a model for commercial success. At each level of this wide international made in France network - from the conquest of new territories to the creation of routes, to money laundering - gangsters and experts give us a behind the scenes look at this lucrative worldwide market dominated by violence and ultra-liberal rules.

THE NUCLEAR MONEY TRAP Why do some countries these days invest large amounts of public money in nuclear energy while players in the private sector have all backed off such a high-risk activity? What exactly lies behind this headlong rush, one that in the long term can only end in failure? The starting point for our film is the signing of the September 2016 agreement between France and Great Britain to construct two French EPR-type nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point in SouthEast England. CLIMATE SCEPTICS The Climate War For some years now, climate sceptics have been questioning the reality of global warming. These movements are financed by large industrial groups who significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and who have set up scientific research teams, think-tanks and lobbying groups to defend their theories. How do they spread their fallacious theories from one coast of the Atlantic to the other? Who supports them and why? In the United States, London, Paris or Brussels, a battle for influence pits these merchants of doubt to international organizations (UN, European Parliament, etc.) How did a few researchers manage to sow the seeds of incertitude? This is the climate war we will be telling you about. A film by L. Noualhat & F. Guérin
