Starting a Musical Uprising

pb: Where does Sarabi call ‘Home’? S: We are all brought up in Eastlands, Nairobi; and we each represent different Communities that make up the Area. Our schooling was not very far from our Neighbourhoods, so we had the privilege of getting a good Education. pb: How did you Discover your passion for Music? Did family play any Role in what you do now? S: Our Families represent the hard-working Kenyan. Our Parents inculcated in us the need to work hard and justly. From young ages, we listened to Musicians like Bob Marley, fela kuti and Eric Wainaina; so their music has had a very big influence on our Sound and Content. We were all Members of a Community Performing Arts Programme, called: Haba na Haba, initiated by our Manager - George Ndetcheh Ndiritu. He discovered us there and brought us together to form Sauti za kwetu, now known as: Sarabi. We are all still Members of the Programme, now called: VOCAL (Voices Of Change Allover), where we Mentor others. pb: What type of Music do you perform? S: It’s a blend of Benga, Reggae, Rock, Pop, Chakacha, Kalapla, Orutu, Dundu, etc. So, we play a variety of Genres, but the consistent thing is our Content: as we always spread a message of Love, Unity, Tolerance, Justice and Peace. pb: from the Arts programme in Eastlands, to sharing a stage with other leading Artists from across the Region. What was it like? S: Like many other Musicians, we didn’t have all the Resources that you need to make it in the Industry. We have grown one step at a time. We are also lucky that we have a Mentor: George Ndiritu, who believes in us and has never hesitated to invest Time, Energy and Resources to see Sarabi grow. Music is a journey, so we are grateful that we are making more steps everyday. pb: your song: ‘Fuata Sheria’, was Nominated for the ONE campaign’s Honesty Oscars last year. What else have you been upto? S: The Song, which featured juliani, put Sarabi on the global Stage. We definitely Hope and Pray for more Nominations. We’ve been very blessed as a Band. We have graced many Stages and the List is way too Big to go through. We thank God, all the Show Promoters, Event Managers, Festivals, Organisations, Embassies, Government institutions and everyone who continues to believe in our Music and our Message. At times we feel Overwhelmed, but we thank God that He continues to keep us strong to Communicate and spread our Message. pb: What has been your most memorable performance? S: Every Performance is very Special. Our Audiences bring a lot of positive Energy to every Show - that is what makes

it Memorable. If we were to single one out though, it would have to be Thursday Nite Live at Choices pub. Wow! Our first 2-hour show...it was the Genesis. Mwanzo! pb: Tell us more about your new Video: ‘Nitabaki Na Nini’, and your previous: ‘Fuata Sheria’, which draw plenty of parrallels. We also hear there’s a Documentary on one of Sarabi’s band members: Mandela? S: Well, both Songs speak from the Heart of our Music: We Love our Country and we want to see our Leaders and the Citizens become more Responsible. The Songs encourage Kenyans not to be afraid to ask the tough Questions. It is our Responsibility to see Kenya become a better Country. The Documentary: MARAMASO, not only documents Mandela’s journey, but also represents the journey of every Sarabi Member and Fan. It talks about Hopes & Aspirations, Defeats & Triumphs and Love, Peace & Justice. It communicates that it is Worth having a Dream. pb: is Sarabi signed to a Record Label? S: Not yet. We are still working Independently. We have had some Offers, but we’re still in the Discussion phase. pb: What Artists do you look up to? S: We Listen to, and Learn from, many Kenyan Musicians and Deejays; including: Suzanna Owiyo, Ayub Ogada, Sauti Sol, Elani, Winyo, Chris Adwar, Makadem, yunasi, Mutinda, Muthoni DQ and Electrique Djs, just to mention a few. Internationally, we also follow: peter Tosh, Michael jackson, youssou Ndour, Baaba Mal, ismael Lo, Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi, Salif keita, Anjelique kidjo, Metallica and many more...this List is endless! We always get different Inspirations from different Musicians, so we try to listen to as many as we can. pb: Are there any Albums that fans should look out for? S: We released our debut Album: Oyaore, over a year ago. The Album was recorded live in Norway, by our friend and producer: Maestro Oyvind Ekse, at the VikEN Studios. We have already started working on our second Album and all we can say is that it’s going to be moto! We are just happy that we can continue to Create. pb: How can we get your Music? S: Through our Social Media. Sarabi

Dj Nruff My STAGE NAME: came about back in High School. I was, and still am, a big fan of the Ruff Ryders (DMX, Eve, Swizz Beatz and LOX). It was a big Hip-Hop Crew back then, so I picked up ‘Ruff’. The ‘N’ simply stands for Ni**a, so I merged the two. i SCHOOLED AT: Madaraka primary School, before joining Utawala Academy to complete my KCPE; then later joined Nairobi School, where I did KCSE. I went on to join the University of Nairobi; followed by the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, where I’m currently pursuing my Degree in Social Science - majoring in Political Science. i GOT iNTO DEEjAyiNG: in High School. I used to listen to HomeBoyz mixes on Capital fM - back then, they had a Deejay Competition, called: Stylus; an Event at The Westlands Mall, which I attended and got to see how stuff works. My big Brother was also part of a Deejay Unit - he’s Mr. french, who was part of CodeRED, which enabled him to Train my twin Brother - justin Rich (who has a mix Show on XfM 105.5 every Friday night) and I. We started making mixes for Matatus, just to get our Names out there. iN TERMS Of DEEjAyiNG EXpERiENCE: I’ve worked with major brands - at HomeBoyz Entertainment, I had the privilege of being both on Television and Radio, as: the H2O Video Mix Show on kTN, The ReUp on NTV kenya and klub kiss on kiSS 100 - before jumping on to HBR 103.5. I was also a Lecturer at their Deejay Academy, where I trained many. After leaving HomeBoyz, I went on a 4-month tour of the United States to mix in major Cities, including: Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Washington DC and Las Vegas. I came back to Kenya and started my own syndicated Show, known as Urban Threat Radio - which is a 2-hour Mix, featuring the

freshest Tunes in Hip-Hop, RnB and Pop. Urban Threat Radio airs on Radio 10 in kigali Rwanda and on Monster Radio, which is Kenya’s first Online Station. I also do a monthly Show on South Africa’s 5 fM, hosted by kabelo. I’ve toured kenya, for Brands like: Heineken, famous Grouse and Smirnoff. I’m also Nokia’s Brand Ambassador in East Africa. CURRENTLy: I’m working with Miller Genuine Draft and Magnum Cream Liqueur on different Events, but they alternate. I’ve also got a Comic book: Adventures of DJ Nruff, coming out soon. It’s about a Superhero Deejay fighting corrupt Villains who want to steal and control Music. It’s a fun and engaging product that’s really fresh, so watch out for it! The Art Director - point Blank, is also excited about it. My iNSpiRATiON iN DEEjAyiNG COMES fROM: my Family and just being able to do what people thought wasn’t possible. I look up to Dj john of HomeBoyz, who gave me my Break - if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Dj Stylez is also a big Inspiration to me; as well as Dj khaled. I’m always inspired by Music - how diverse it is and everything else - Music makes me do all this. iN THE fUTURE: I’m looking at make Deejaying respected - like any other Profession, that one can actually earn a Living from. I also want to help remove the stereotype that Deejays are Bad Boys. At the end of the day, I just want to take Deejaying to the next level - with quality Radio & TV Shows and Concerts, featuring different engaging Concepts. My ADViCE TO UpCOMiNG DEEjAyS: is simple... Do what you Love, be Patient and don’t forget to Pray.

In Nigeria, he worked with Chief Ebenezer Obey, the Compassion Band in ilupeju and Daniel Wilson. The Jazz Guitarist has released five Albums, with the Sixth set for release later this year. kunle Ayo has performed at a number of Jazz Festivals around the World, including: the Cape Town international jazz festival in South Africa, the Harare international festival of Arts in zimbabwe, the Calabar jazz festival in Nigeria and the Mapungubwe jazz festival in Limpopo, as well as in the South African cities of Bloemfontein and Cape Town. He has also been a Guest Artist at Under the Bridge in the United kingdom. The Guitarist is known primarily for his contemporary Jazz feel, though he has been willing to explore the Dance genre, given its popularity in Nigeria - a home market, which he hopes to penetrate effectively with some of his newer Music. kunle has been quoted as attributing his love for Jazz to its dynamism, as the Genre can incorporate up to 12 notes of Music.
