As PHAT!buzz

TM celebrates its 15th Year of telling you Wazup , we are Checking-in with Kenya’s musical Legends, who have been part of our Phamily since inception. We go Way Back with this month’s Musician - who we had the privileged to Manage, as part of K-South, at the turn of the Millennium.

Abraham Kimani, a.k.a Bamboo (or Abraham Bamboo, since getting Saved in 2014) is said to be the first African Rapper to create serious waves in the US Music Industry. He has Released a total of four Albums to-date, with Nairoberry and Nairobism, both from K-South, considered as African Hip-Hop classics.

Pb: You released ‘Too Much Potential’ in April; what was the Inspiration behind this new Single? AB: Looking at Africa, I wanted to tell People that the Sky is the Limit; so we should all Embrace our God-given Talents and use them to Inspire others. Pb: How do you Deal with Music Piracy? AB: I depend on MCSK, who have been doing a great job of Collecting my Royalties; and having Crackdowns on people who Pirate. PRISK have really Helped as well. Pb: What is the one Thing you are most Proud of? AB: My Christian Faith.

Pb: What made Music special to you? AB: Back in the day, News was focused on what the President would talk about; but Music gave us a Platform to Speak about Issues that affected the Youth.

Pb: Other than Music, what else are you Involved in? AB: I host a Hip-Hop Radio Show at 1FM, from Monday to Friday, at 7pm-10pm. I am also in the Business of buying and selling Cars.

Pb: You have been called Africa’s Hip-Hop King; what makes the Genre so Special to you, after all these Years? AB: Unlike other Genre of Music, Hip-Hop allows you to Tell a Story of what is Happening on the Streets. It gives an Opportunity to Speak about different Issues affecting People.

Pb: How did you end up being featured in the Film: Hip-Hop Colony? AB: The Director - Michel Wanguhu, has always been a Fan of Kenyan Hip-Hop. He called me to say he was doing a Documentary and asked me if I was Interested, so I Agreed to do it.

Pb: When did you start Singing? AB: I have been in Music since I was a Child, but seriously from around 1993.

Pb: What is next for Bamboo? AB: More Music and More Business.

Pb: Tell us more about When you used to Rap in the Streets of Los Angeles? AB: Rapping on the streets of LA was all about Battling and trying to Impress my Friends. We did it for Fun.

Pb: What advice would you give Anyone who Looks-up to You? AB: Stay focused and do what you do for the Right Reasons. If you do it for the Wrong Reasons, you will Not be Motivated and it will not last. TheRealBamboo

MY REAL NAME IS: Arthur Wandera. I GOT MY STAGE NAME: because I was way too Ambitious when I got into the Music Industry, hence my Friend Big Ted, started Saying to me: “The Space is the Limit”, instead of “The Sky”. So, as a Joke, they started calling me “Spaceman”, so I chose: DJ Space. I STUDIED AT: Kenyatta University, for a Degree in Music; and I am almost Graduating in my Master of Music – Performance & Composition, at the same Campus. I USUALLY PLAY: all Genres of music. Given the Fact that I’ve been around since the year 2000, my Experience with all kinds of Music is quite Vast; but I do lean more towards promoting African Music extensively. I PREFER TO PLAY: Afro-Beat, Afro-House, Kwaito, Benga and all other African genres; but usually my Clients’ needs take Priority, so I am extremely Versatile. I GOT INTO DEEJAYING: in the year 2000, after High School; so it’s been 15 Years straight!! I LEARNT TO DEEJAY: when a Friend, called James Opere of EWD Studios, accepted to Train me as a Resident in two Pubs, called Tarcs and Raiyal. At the same time, I watched the likes of DJ Peter (Peter Waiganjo); as well as DJ Pinye, who was then from my Neighbourhood. He met me while I Deejayed at a local Pub in Kenyatta Market. From then on, I started Helping out the Unit that Pinye formed, called: SCRATCHAHOLICS. DJSpaceMOB

MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT: was getting People to believe in my Dream. Be it Family, Banks, Girlfriends, Friends, etc. MY MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: include building an Events and Entertainment Company, called MOB Entertainment Limited. I have also been Consistent in the Acquisition of Knowledge and Skills, by pursuing my Studies, in spite of the enormous Hurdles that I face every day. I have Deejayed at the same Concerts, Festivals, Platforms and Circuits, with various A-List Acts worldwide. I am also the Official Deejay, House Band Leader and Assistant Music Director of Coke Studio Africa. IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY, I’D BE: a Motivational Speaker or a Lawyer. FOR A LONG TIME, KENYA HAS BEEN FAULTED FOR NOT HAVING ITS OWN SOUND. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION? I think that is partly true, but not entirely. Benga was originally our Sound, which Congolese music borrows heavily from. The likes of Madilu, Kanda Bongo Man and Koffi Olomide, managed to Own this Sound and Commercialised it; while our earlier Acts lacked Consistency, due to various Reasons (e.g. Investment). Meanwhile, Kenya’s urban Musicians have managed to develop different Styles, Genres and Sound, which have gained some Traction. I think we just need some Time and Consistency; which has to be capped by Unity in Defining which Sounds best Represent us - be it Genge, Kapuka, Bengenge, etc. The most Consistent and Hard-working Artists will help Kenya to Achieve this Sound.

heila Yvonne Bonnick (a.k.a. Sheyla Bonnick) is a Singer, Performer, Songwriter and published Author, born in Jamaica and brought up in England. She was a Member of an early Line-up for the Pop Group: Boney M., during 1975.

SHEYLA BONNICK

Her career started when she and her Friend - Maizie Williams, answered an Advert in The Stage newspaper for a Dance contract in Germany, during the early 1970s. One day, while at a Restaurant, the two were approached by an Agent - Katja Wolfe, who asked if they were interested in Fronting a Group called: Boney M., for Lip-sync Performances on Television and Discotheque appearances, for the Single: ‘Baby Do You Wanna Bump’, which had been Recorded by Producer: Frank Farian. The two accepted and went on the Road with two other Members: Claudja Barry and Mike.

Sheyla left shortly after, feeling that the Group was going nowhere. She joined a Munich Disco Project: Mandrake, for the Recording of: ‘It’s Time For Us’, ‘Dancing The Night Away’ and ‘Disco Magic’. She then Signed to Boney M.’s Record Label: Hansa International, to Release a Disco Cover of: ‘Proud Mary’, credited to Sheila Bonnique. She recorded another Track: ‘In the Shadows’, which appeared on the Soundtrack album of the German film: A Woman in Flames, during 1983. In the early 1990s, she moved to Denmark, with her Icelandic husband and Manager, where she co-wrote a Musical, called: Money Talks, staged for some months in the Lindenborg Inn. Later, Sheyla reunited with Maizie Williams, who was starting another Boney M. Line-up; where she became the Lead Singer. The Group toured the World for 10 Years, in a Line-up also featuring Kelly Rahman and Toyin Adekale. She then left the Group and later Formed her own Tribute Show: Sound of Boney M., featuring original Sheyla Bonnick. She released the Single: ‘Live Better’, with Latvian artist: Rassell, during May 2013; before Producing the Album: Angel Cures, by fellow Sounds of Boney M. Member: Francesca Mowatt. Sheyla has also Published the Book: Women Are Like Cats and Men Are Like Dogs - Or Are They?, under the pseudonym: Kat Brown. Sheyla Bonnick will be Performing her Sound of Boney M. Show for the first time in Kenya, on Saturday 5th September 2015, at the Safari Park Hotel on Thika Road. @sheylab
